The impact of abbreviated progressive muscle relaxation on salivary cortisol and salivary immunoglobulin A (sIgA)

This study examined the acute effects of relaxation training on salivary cortisol and salivary immunoglobulin A (sIgA). Members of age- and gender-matched undergraduate student pairs were randomly assigned to an experimental or control group. Forty-one experimental subjects were led through Abbreviated Progressive Relaxation Training (APRT) during a 1-h laboratory session; 14 control subjects merely sat quietly in the laboratory for an equal amount of time. All subjects provided pre- and post-intervention saliva samples and self-report data on state anxiety, perceived stress, and relaxation levels. Heart rate was also monitored immediately before and after APRT or quiet sitting. Results indicated that a brief relaxation exercise led to experimental subjects having significantly lower levels of post-intervention salivary cortisol (p = .036) and significantly higher levels of post-intervention sIgA concentration (p < .001) and secretion rate (p < .001) than control subjects. The data suggest that relaxation training may play a role in immunoenhancement.

Pro-inflammatory cytokines modify neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor assembly

We have examined the impact of the inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1 beta (IL-1beta) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) on assembly of nAChRs from subunit mixtures of nAChRalpha4, beta2 and beta4 transiently transfected into 293 cells. In control transfections approximately 55% of alpha4 associated preferentially with beta4, but less than 15% complexed with beta2 and the remainder was associated with both beta subunits. These relative ratios were modified by pro-inflammatory cytokines. IL-1beta strongly enhanced alpha4/beta2 association and decreased alpha4/beta4, whereas TNFalpha promoted mixed alpha4/beta2/beta4 interactions. These results show that the emerging rules governing assembly of nAChRs are subject to modification by the pro-inflammatory cytokine environment.

The impact of obesity in urology

The incidence and progression of urologic diseases, as well as several urologic cancers.depend on many interrelated factors, such as obesity, diet, genetics, environment, age, and the immune system. Obesity is a risk factor for stress urinary incontinence, ED, infertility, and renal calculi. Numerous publications have demonstrated that a high dietary intake of fat increases prostate cancer risk, although the mechanisms are not clear. Although some reports may demonstrate an association between obesity and prostate cancer, it may be hard to establish because, in general, men with obesity have a high-fat diet. Obesity, recurrent urinary tract infections, increased intake of protein and fried foods, and female sex seem to increase the risk of renal cancer. Environmental toxins seem to be the major factors affecting the incidence of bladder cancers. Thus, dietary modification and other public health measures directed at reducing weight may reduce the incidence of urologic illnesses. More studies are necessary to determine the therapeutic effects of weight loss and dietary modification on the incidence and progression of urologic tumors.

Effects of housing and individual coping characteristics on immune responses of pigs

The impact of environmental factors on immune responses may be influenced by coping characteristics of the individuals under study. The behavioral response of pigs in a so-called Backtest early in life seems indicative of their coping style at a later age. The present study investigated the effects of housing, barren versus enriched, and coping style, as assessed by Backtest classification, on immune responses of pigs. Pigs were housed either without a rooting substrate (barren housing) or in identical pens enriched with deep straw bedding (enriched housing) from birth. During the suckling period, pigs were subjected to the Backtest. Each pig was restrained on its back for 1 min and the resistance (i.e., number of escape attempts) was scored. Pigs classified as 'high-' or 'low-resisting' (HR and LR, respectively) were immunized with di-nitrophenyl-conjugated keyhole limpet haemocyanin (DNP-KLH) at 9 weeks of age. Blood samples were drawn before immunization (Day 0) and weekly thereafter, until Day 35. KLH-specific lymphocyte proliferation following immunization was higher for HR pigs than for LR pigs. Housing did not affect proliferative responses. Housing and coping style interacted in their effect on KLH-specific humoral immune responses. LR pigs from barren housing showed higher KLH-specific antibody titers than LR pigs from enriched housing. Differently housed HR pigs, however, showed similar antibody titers. These findings support other research indicating that individual coping styles of pigs are reflected in their immune responses. More important, the present study demonstrates that effects of housing on humoral immune responses of pigs may differ for pigs with divergent coping styles.

Forty-six experimental subjects were led through Abbreviated Progressive Relaxation Training (APRT) exercises during two laboratory sessions spaced exactly 1 week apart. Fifteen control subjects experienced two laboratory sessions where they sat quietly for an equal amount of time. Results indicated that a brief relaxation exercise led to experimental subjects having significantly lower levels of post-intervention heart rate, state anxiety, perceived stress, and salivary cortisol than control subjects, as well as increased levels of self-report levels of relaxation. The results of this study may have implications for the use of relaxation training in enhancing immune function.

Psychoneuroimmunology: an interpretation of experimental and case study evidence towards a paradigm for predictable results

This paper surveys a number of key experiments and case studies relating to psychoneuroimmunology. It finds that most techniques to influence or even direct the immune system via the mind fall into a series of theoretical categories called passive, active and targeted effects. By examining the results of experiments and studies in the light of these categories a number of important conclusions are drawn. These conclusions explain differences in experimental results, describe those variables that appear to be central to obtaining results, and describe in detail where experimentation should be concentrated to further knowledge of psychoneuroimmunology.

Chromosomes and stress

The present investigation examines genotoxic effects of: prolonged periods of stress; the role of the endocrine system; and the relationship between psychogenic stress and chemical mutagens. Increased levels of both Sister Chromatid Exchanges (SCEs) and Chromosome Aberrations (CAs) were observed in male rats subjected to white noise of either 72 or 240 hrs duration, demonstrating that damage occurs during chronic stress. Rats subjected to foot-shock after having been either hypophysectomized or sham-operated, showed elevation of both SCEs and CAs, indicating that hormones in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis do not play a role in genotoxic damage. Rats subjected to foot-shock, and/or the mutagen Mitomycin-C(MMC) showed elevated SCEs, both separately and together. The combined effect was the sum of the individual effects, demonstrating that synergism was not involved. This investigation establishes that psychogenic stress plays a role in genotoxic damage.

Psychogenic stress induces chromosomal and DNA damage

In this investigation, rats subjected to swim stress showed within 24 hours significant increases in both the level of chromosome aberrations and Sister Chromatid Exchanges (SCEs) in bone marrow cells. The generality of cytogenetic damage by behavioral stressors was demonstrated by exposing rats to both cold-and warm-water forced swims, to white noise, and to continuous or intermittent inescapable foot shock stress (IFS). The induction of chromosome aberrations and SCEs, to differing degrees, by stressors that differ both quantitatively and qualitatively, demonstrates that this is a general phenomenon of stress. The use of an additional measure, unscheduled DNA Synthesis (UDS) showed that stress-induced genotoxic damage can occur in a second cell type and on a molecular as well as chromosomal level. These results indicate that there may be a cellular genetic basis for some of the effects of stress.

Neuroendocrine regulation of inflammation and tissue repair by submandibular gland factors

Interactions between the immune, nervous and endocrine systems are important in inflammation and tissue repair. One neuroendocrine pathway involves polypeptide factors derived from the submandibular glands, whose synthesis and release are controlled by cervical sympathetic nerves. This novel pathway of immune-neuroendocrine communication is the cervical sympathetic trunk-submandibular gland (CST-SMG) axis.
