Abstract
BACKGROUND Low-grade inflammation plays a role in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome (MetS), and measuring levels of inflammatory molecules, such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), may indicate Mets progression. Serum uric acid (SUA) has also been identified as an independent risk factor for MetS. This study aimed to investigate the association between MetS components and levels of serum hs-CRP and SUA using representative and reliable data for the Korean population. METHODS This study used the data of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016-2018, a cross-sectional and nationally representative survey performed by the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. RESULTS We analysed the data of 13,454 individuals. High hs-CRP levels were observed in 1,164 (8.7%) subjects while 3,296 (24.5%) subjects had high SUA levels. Moreover, hs-CRP was negatively correlated with serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (OR, 1.703; 95% CI, 1.431-2.027). When stratified by sex, this trend remained, but the correlation was stronger in women than in men. Furthermore, high SUA levels were significantly associated with hypertension (HTN) (OR, 1.399; 95% CI, 1.210-1.616), hypertriglyceridemia (OR, 1.735; 95% CI, 1.486-2.026), and low HDL (OR, 1.257; 95% CI, 1.106-1.429), but not with diabetes mellitus (DM) (OR, 0.478; 95% CI, 0.382-0.597). When grouped by sex, this trend remained, however, all MetS components were found to be more prevalent in women with high SUA. CONCLUSIONS Our findings showed that low HDL was more prevalent in subjects with high hs-CRP, and high SUA levels were observed in subjects with HTN, hypertriglyceridemia, and low HDL. However, the prevalence of high SUA was lower in diabetic subjects.

Abstract
Whether hyperuricemia is a true risk factor for elevated blood pressure (BP) is controversial, and the sex-specific effects of serum uric acid (SUA) on BP during a follow-up period remain unclear. We investigated whether the association of SUA level with systolic or diastolic BP during a 10-year period differs by sex in a Japanese general population of individuals who received annual health examinations (n = 28,990). After exclusion of subjects who had no BP or SUA data at baseline, a total of 22,994 subjects (male/female: 14,603/8391, age: 47 ± 11 years) were recruited. After adjustment for age; body mass index; BP; SUA level; use of drugs for hyperuricemia and hypertension; diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and chronic kidney disease; family history of hypertension; habits of current smoking and alcohol consumption at baseline; the duration of the observation period; and the interaction between each covariate and the duration of the observation period indicated a significant association of SUA level with change in systolic or diastolic BP over time. There was a significant interaction between sex and SUA level for the change in systolic BP (P = 0.003) but not the change in diastolic BP (P = 0.081). The SUA level at baseline (per 1 mg/dL) was significantly associated with a change in systolic BP over time in females (estimate: 0.073 mmHg/year, P = 0.003) but not in males (estimate: 0.020 mmHg/year, P = 0.160). In conclusion, a high SUA level at baseline is significantly associated with an increase in systolic BP over time in female individuals but not in male individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Serum uric acid (SUA) has been associated with cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis and carotid artery stenosis. However, data on the relationship between SUA level and proximal extracranial artery stenosis (PEAS) are limited. Therefore, this study investigates the association between SUA levels and the risk of PEAS in asymptomatic Chinese population. SETTING This community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Jidong Community Hospital, Tangshan, Hebei, China between July 2013 and August 2014. PARTICIPANTS The study examined 3325 asymptomatic participants (40-60 years) to evaluate the risk of PEAS. RESULTS For the participants stratified into quartiles based on gender-specific SUA levels, the prevalence of PEAS increased from Q1 to Q4 from 12.3% to 29.8% in the vertebral artery (VA), and from 2.8% to 5.8% in the common carotid artery. The proportion of PEAS relative to the detected number of arterial stenosis was lower in Q1 than in Q2-Q4. The multivariable ORs and 95% CI of PEAS in the second through fourth compared with the lowest quartiles for arterial stenosis were 1.278 (0.980 to 1.665), 1.117 (0.851 to 1.468) and 1.375 (1.033 to 1.830) (ptrend=0.0399); and for VA stenosis, 1.285 (0.966 to 1.709), 1.085 (0.808 to 1.457) and 1.439 (1.061 to 1.952) (ptrend=0.0235). CONCLUSION Elevated SUA concentration is significantly associated with PEAS in an asymptomatic middle-aged Chinese population, and vertebral arteries appeared to be the most vulnerable vessels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Elevated serum uric acid (UA) was intimately correlated with vascular stiffness and abnormal ankle brachial index (ABI) in various populations. These correlations lost significance after adjustment for estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), indicating that the association of UA and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) or ABI might be driven by kidney function. UA is predominantly eliminated through the kidneys, and metabolic disorders can influence the clearance of UA. In this study, we aimed to explore the putative correlation between FEUA and baPWV or ABI to determine to what extent the associations with UA were affected by renal function. METHODS This cross-sectional study enrolled 2351 participants, who underwent general health screening in Hanzhong people's hospital from March to June of 2017. BaPWV and ABI were measured using a volume-plethysmographic apparatus (BP-203RPEII; Nihon Colin, Tokyo, Japan). FEUA was divided into quartiles: Q1:FEUA≤3.07; Q2: 3.07<FEUA≤5.32; Q3: 5.32<FEUA≤9.19; and Q4: FEUA> 9.19. RESULTS Lower FEUA predicted a higher prevalence of high baPWV and low ABI (p for trend <0.001). The respective ORs for high baPWV from the first to the third quartiles of FEUA were 1.777(1.323, 2.387); 1.561(1.158, 2.104); and 1.680 (1.250, 2.259). The prevalence of low ABI was greatly elevated with the decrement of FEUA [ORs for the first to third FEUA quartiles were 6.977(2.062, 23.610); 5.123(1.475, 17.790); and 2.685(0.709, 10.171), respectively]. The association of FEUA and ABI was independent of related confounding factors. However, the association between FEUA and baPWV was greatly influenced by corresponding confounders, especially gender. The efficacy of FEUA in the prediction of low ABI was stronger than that of serum UA. However, serum UA was more powerful in the prediction of high baPWV. CONCLUSION Kidney function exerted a profound influence on the relationship between UA and baPWV or ABI, revealing complex interactions among cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract
The quadratic inference function (QIF) method becomes more acceptable for correlated data because of its advantages over generalized estimating equations (GEE). This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between platelet indices and blood pressure using QIF method, which has not been studied extensively in real data settings.A population-based longitudinal study was conducted in Beijing from 2007 to 2012, and the median of follow-up was 6 years. A total of 6515 cases, who were aged between 20 and 65 years at baseline and underwent routine physical examinations every year from 3 Beijing hospitals were enrolled to explore the association between platelet indices and blood pressure by QIF method. The original continuous platelet indices were categorized into 4 levels (Q1-Q4) using the 3 quartiles of P25, P50, and P75 as a critical value. GEE was performed to make a comparison with QIF.After adjusting for age, usage of drugs, and other confounding factors, mean platelet volume was negatively associated with diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (Equation is included in full-text article.)in males and positively linked with systolic blood pressure (SBP) (Equation is included in full-text article.). Platelet distribution width was negatively associated with SBP (Equation is included in full-text article.). Blood platelet count was associated with DBP (Equation is included in full-text article.)in males.Adults in Beijing with prolonged exposure to extreme value of platelet indices have elevated risk for future hypertension and evidence suggesting using some platelet indices for early diagnosis of high blood pressure was provided.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mean platelet volume (MPV) correlates with platelet activation and has recently emerged as a potential marker of cardiovascular diseases. Previous publications also suggest possible association between MPV and some cardiovascular risk factors but the evidences are still conflicting and inconclusive. OBJECTIVE To study the association between MPV and cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study using data from the second survey of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) cohort. All participants of the survey who had results of MPV were included. Exclusion criteria included subjects with known hematologic disease or subjects with hematocrit <30% or platelet count <140,000/mm(3). The details of cardiovascular risk factors were documented and the association between MPV and risk factors was analyzed using fractional polynomial regression analysis. RESULTS There were 2727 subjects with MPV results. After excluding those who had hematologic disease, 2642 subjects were included for analysis. Univariate analysis revealed that gender, diabetes, serum triglyceride, hypertension, and prehypertension were associated with MPV. Hematocrit, platelet count and fasting plasma glucose were inversely correlated with MPV. After adjusting with other variables, the risk factors that remained significantly associated with MPV included female gender, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, serum triglyceride, hypertension, and prehypertension. Platelet count and hematocrit were found to have significant inverse correlation with MPV. CONCLUSION After adjusting for other cardiovascular risk factors, the independent factors remain associated with MPV included female gender, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, serum triglyceride, hypertension and prehypertension. MPV has significant, but inverse association with platelet count and hematocrit.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between hyperuricemia and hematological indicators. Five hundred twenty-two male and 255 female subjects (18-90 years old) were recruited in the study. The level of serum uric acid (SUA), total white blood cell (WBC) count, red blood cell (RBC) count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelet count was measured, computed, and analyzed. Pearson correlation coefficients, Student t-tests, multivariate linear regression models, and multivariate logistic regression models were performed to analyze the results.For men, WBC count (r = 0.13, P < 0.01), RBC count (r = 0.15, P < 0.001), and hemoglobin (r = 0.11, P < 0.05) were significantly correlated with SUA. For women, WBC count (r = 0.24, P < 0.001), RBC count (r = 0.31, P < 0.001), hemoglobin (r = 0.31, P < 0.001), and hematocrit (r = 0.29, P < 0.001) were significantly correlated with SUA. For men, WBC (P < 0.01) and RBC (P < 0.05) counts were significantly higher in patients with hyperuricemia than in normal subjects. For men, after adjustment for confounding factors, those in the fourth quartiles of WBC counts had 1.66-fold increased odds of hyperuricemia as compared with those in the reference group. For women, after adjustment, those in the second to fourth quartiles of WBC count, RBC count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit had increased the odds of hyperuricemia as compared with those in the reference groups. Our study showed significant relations between the level of SUA and WBC count, RBC count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit, which could be important biological markers of hyperuricemia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the association between hematological indices and serum uric acid in adolescents with hyperuricemia. METHODS 10-year retrospective cohort study of 607 patients with hyperuricemia registered with the Pediatric Nephrology Department. RESULTS There was a statistically significant positive correlation between serum uric acid levels and BMI Z-scores (r=0.406, P<0.001), white and red blood cell counts, hemoglobin and hematocrit. Higher levels of hemoglobin, hematocrit and red blood cells were found in adolescents with metabolic syndrome than in groups without this condition. CONCLUSION Hematological parameters could be important biological markers of cardiometabolic risk in adolescents with hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Large platelets with high haemostatic activity may lead to increased platelet aggregation.. Mean platelet volume (MPV), an indicator of platelet reactivity, may emerge as a prognostic marker in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). It was the objective of this study to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess prognostic effects of MPV on cardiovascular events (CVE) in CAD patients. We searched MEDLINE and SCOPUS from inception to January 2, 2014. All studies that reported MPV and the incidence of cardiovascular events in CAD patients were included. Two reviewers independently extracted the data. A random-effects model was applied for pooling the mean difference of MPV between patients with vs without CVE. Among 30 eligible studies, eight studies reported mean difference of MPV between CVE groups, 11 studies reported MPV dichotomous into high vs low MPV groups, and 11 studies reported both. The pooled mean difference was 0.69 fL (95 %CI = 0.36, 1.01), i. e. patients with CVE had a MPV about 0.69 fL higher than non-CVE. Patients with higher MPV were about 12 % more likely to die than patients with lower MPV (RR 1.12; 95 %CI = 1.02-1.24). However, pooling these effects was based on high heterogeneity and the source of heterogeneity could not be identified. This might be explained by many differences among included studies (e. g. study population, outcomes of interest, analysate, time between blood collection and MPV analysis, etc). These findings suggest that MPV may be a useful prognostic marker in patients with CAD.

Abstract
In E.N.T clinical practice, patients with nasal obstruction due to deviated nasal septum is a common presentation. Nasal airway obstruction is a common cause of upper airway obstruction further leading to obstructive and hypoxic manifestations. Mean platelet volume (MPV) levels increase in hypoxic conditions. MPV is one of the platelet activation index which reflects the platelet production rate. Present prospective study conducted in the department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck surgery, Gandhi Medical College and Hamidia Hospital, Bhopal, on 63 patients with the clinical evidence of DNS and 63 healthy age matched subjects as control group, aimed to evaluate the relationship between MPV levels and nasal obstruction due to deviated nasal septum (DNS). The diagnosis of patients with DNS was based on anterior rhinoscopy and endoscopic nasal examination. Blood samples were collected before surgical correction. In present study, the authors found that there is preponderance of DNS in the age group of 25-45 years being the most active age group, males having the higher incidence. Majority of cases of DNS being left sided and of obstructed type. MPV were significantly higher in patients with DNS than the control group. Among the cases MPV being higher in females and in the impacted type of DNS. Present study reemphasized the concept that MPV is increased in chronic nasal obstruction due to DNS and this increase is in accordance with the severity of DNS.
