n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids increase thermic effect of food in men with metabolic syndrome

trans-Palmitoleic acid promotes adipose thermogenesis to reduce obesity via hypothalamic FFAR1 signaling

Diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT) is crucial for maintaining body weight homeostasis, and the role of dietary fatty acids in modulating DIT is essential. However, the underlying mechanism of fatty acid regulated diet-induced thermogenesis remains elusive. Utilizing the diet- and genetic ablation-induced obese mice models, we found that the C16 unsaturated fatty acids, trans-palmitoleic acid (TPA) and cis-palmitoleic acid (CPA), significantly increased the energy expenditure by promoting the thermogenesis of brown adipose tissues and the production of beige cells in white adipose. As a result, there is a significant reduction in the occurrence of obesity, associated hepatic steatosis and hyperglycemia. Notably, TPA exhibited more potent effects on promoting DIT and alleviating obesity than CPA did. Using inhibitor and gene deletion mice models, we unveiled that TPA acted as a signaling molecule to play a biological function, which could be sensed by the hypothalamic FFAR1 to activate the sympathetic nervous system in promoting adipose tissue thermogenesis. Together, these results demonstrate the underlying mechanism of free fatty acids associated-DIT and will provide fresh insights into the roles of trans-fatty acids in the development of obesity.

Effect of the fatty acid composition of meals on postprandial energy expenditure: a systematic review

OBJECTIVE

The energy imbalance produced by an increase in caloric intake and/or decrease in energy expenditure induces obesity. However, the fatty acid composition of a diet can affect the metabolism in different ways, having a role in the development of obesity.

AIM

To determine the effect of different fatty acids types and composition on Diet-Induced Thermogenesis (DIT) and postprandial energy expenditure in humans.

METHODS

A search in the PubMed and Web of Science databases, yielded a total of 269 potential articles as a first result; 254 were excluded according to the criteria.

RESULTS

Fifteen articles were used for this systematic review. The studies analyzed report different effects of the fatty acids of the treatment on the diet-induced thermogenesis. Evidence indicates that the consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids causes a greater DIT than saturated fatty acids. Also, the consumption of medium-chain fatty acids compared to long-chain fatty acids has been shown to increase DIT. Likewise, the use of certain oils has shown positive effects on postprandial energy expenditure, as is the case of olive oil, compared to rapeseed oil.

CONCLUSIONS

The use of specific types of fatty acids in the everyday diet can increase postprandial energy expenditure in humans. Nevertheless, longer-term studies are required.

Impact of carbohydrates on weight regain

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Research on obesity treatment has shifted its focus from weight loss to weight-loss maintenance strategies. The conventional approach of a low-fat diet is challenged by insights from glycemic effects of carbohydrates on body weight regulation.

RECENT FINDINGS

Metabolic and endocrine adaptations to weight loss that contribute to weight regain involve reduced energy expenditure, increased insulin sensitivity, and enhanced orexigenic signals. This review summarizes the impact of carbohydrates on energetic efficiency, partitioning of weight regain as fat and lean mass, and appetite control. Both the amount and frequency of postprandial glycemia add to body weight regulation after weight loss and strengthen the concept of glycemic index and glycemic load. In addition, dietary fiber and slowly or poorly absorbable functional sugars modify gastrointestinal peptides involved in appetite and metabolic regulation and exert prebiotic effects.

SUMMARY

Current evidence suggests that a low-glycemic load diet with a preference for low-glycemic index foods and integration of slowly digestible, poorly absorbable carbohydrates may improve weight-loss maintenance. Future studies should investigate the health benefits of low glycemic functional sweeteners (e.g., isomaltulose and tagatose).

N-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids: relationship to inflammation in healthy adults and adults exhibiting features of metabolic syndrome

Individuals with metabolic syndrome (MetS) have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, therefore, research has been directed at reducing various components that contribute to MetS and associated metabolic impairments, including chronic low-grade inflammation. Epidemiological, human, animal and cell culture studies provide evidence that dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA), including alpha-linolenic acid (18:3n-3, ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA) and/or docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA) may improve some of the components associated with MetS. The current review will discuss recent evidence from human observational and intervention studies that focused on the effects of ALA, EPA or DHA on inflammatory markers in healthy adults and those with one or more features of MetS. Observational studies in healthy adults support the recommendation that a diet rich in n-3 fatty acids may play a role in preventing and reducing inflammation, whereas intervention studies in healthy adults have yielded inconsistent results. The majority of intervention studies in adults with features of MetS have reported a benefit for some inflammatory measures; however, other studies using high n-3 fatty acid doses and long supplementation periods have reported no effect. Overall, the data reviewed herein support recommendations for regular fatty fish consumption and point toward health benefits in terms of lowering inflammation in adults with one or more features of MetS.
