Abstract
We report for the first time in Portugal a serotype c Haemophilus influenzae isolated from an adult, with HIV-1 infection. Whole-genome sequencing characterized the isolate as clonal complex ST-7, albeit with a novel MLST (ST2754) due to a unique atpG profile. Integration of this genome with other available H. influenzae serotype c genomes from PubMLST revealed its overall genetic distinctiveness, with the closest related isolate being identified in France in 2020. This surveillance study, involving collaboration among hospitals and reference laboratory, successfully contributed to the identification and characterization of this rare serotype.

Abstract
Background Non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae has become increasingly important as a causative agent of invasive diseases following vaccination against H. influenzae type b. The emergence of antibiotic resistance underscores the necessity to investigate typeable non-b carriage and non-typeable H. influenzae (NTHi) in children. Methods Nasopharyngeal swab samples were taken over a three-year period (2016-2018) from 336 children (6-30 months of age) attending daycare centers (DCCs) in Belgium, and from 218 children with acute otitis media (AOM). Biotype, serotype, and antibiotic resistance of H. influenzae strains were determined phenotypically. Mutations in the ftsI gene were explored in 129 strains that were resistant or had reduced susceptibility to beta-lactam antibiotics. Results were compared with data obtained during overlapping time periods from 94 children experiencing invasive disease. Results Overall, NTHi was most frequently present in both carriage (DCC, AOM) and invasive group. This was followed by serotype "f" (2.2%) and "e" (1.4%) in carriage, and "b" (16.0%), "f" (11.7%), and "a" (4.3%) in invasive strains. Biotype II was most prevalent in all studied groups, followed by biotype III in carriage and I in invasive strains. Strains from both groups showed highest resistance to ampicillin (26.7% in carriage vs. 18.1% in invasive group). A higher frequency of ftsI mutations were found in the AOM group than the DCC group (21.6 vs. 14.9% - p = 0.056). Even more so, the proportion of biotype III strains that carried a ftsI mutation was higher in AOM compared to DCC (50.0 vs. 26.3% - p < 0.01) and invasive group. Conclusion In both groups, NTHi was most frequently circulating, while specific encapsulated serotypes for carriage and invasive group were found. Biotypes I, II and III were more frequently present in the carriage and invasive group. The carriage group had a higher resistance-frequency to the analyzed antibiotics than the invasive group. Interestingly, a higher degree of ftsI mutations was found in children with AOM compared to DCC and invasive group. This data helps understanding the H. influenzae carriage in Belgian children, as such information is scarce.

Abstract
H. Influenza is a rare cause of endocarditis. We report a case of H. Influenza endocarditis that was complicated by cardiogenic and septic shock, active myocardial ischemia and aortic insufficiency. The goal of this report is to help recognize the signs and symptoms of endocarditis and to discuss management strategies in patients with concomitant cardiogenic and septic shock complicated by aortic insufficiency.

Abstract
Since the introduction of
Haemophilus influenzae
(Hi) serotype b (Hib) vaccination, reports of increasing incidence rates of non-Hib serotypes have emerged. A systematic review was performed to investigate whether the Hi serotype f (Hif) incidence rate has increased globally and to describe its associated disease burden. In the post-Hib vaccine era, evidence shows that the incidence rate of Hif infection is increasing worldwide. In total 94 studies including 2 701 patients reported Hif infections. The estimated pooled incidence rate of Hif infection was 0.15/100 000 population per year (range: 0.05–0.40/100 000), with a median case fatality ratio of 14.3 %. Invasive infections most frequently presented as pneumonia (45 %), septicaemia (34 %) and meningitis (20 %). Of 191 Hif isolates, 87 % were ampicillin-susceptible. Multi-locus sequence typing revealed that Hif were relatively clonal, with the majority belonging to clonal complex 124. Hif causes invasive infections of significant variance in both severity and presentation. Globally, the Hif population shows little genetic variability and currently appears to possess low resistance to antimicrobials.

Abstract
The incorporation of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine into the Argentine National Immunization Program in 1998 resulted in a dramatic decrease in the incidence of invasive disease due to this serotype. We assessed 1405 H. influenzae (Hi) isolates causing invasive infections referred to the National Reference Laboratory between 2011 and 2019. Non-encapsulated Hi were the most common strains (44.5%), followed by types b (41.1%) and a (10.0%). Significant increase in the proportion of type b was observed, from 31.2% in 2011, to 50% in 2015, correlating with the peak incidence rate, later decreasing to 33.6% by 2019. We compared the genetic relationship between clones circulating during the period of increased Hib incidence (2011-2015) and those of the prevaccination-transition period (1997-1998). Four pulsotypes predominated in both periods, G, M, P and K, G being the most common. Multi-locus sequence typing revealed that the 4 pulsotypes belonged to ST6, or one of its simple or double locus variants. Isolates from fully vaccinated individuals did not differ from those of the rest of the population studied. After ruling out aspects associated with emergence of specific clones, we concluded that factors such as low booster coverage rates, delayed vaccination schedules and use of different vaccines may have contributed to the reemergence of Hib infections.

Abstract
Haemophilus influenzae is an opportunistic pathogen usually causing bacteremia, meningitis, and pneumonia in children. Here, we developed a method based on multiple cross displacement amplification (MCDA) method and real-tme fluorescence technique for rapid detection of H. influenzae. A set of 10 primers was designed for the H. influenzae real-time MCDA reaction, and a core primer was modified with a restriction endonuclease recognition sequence, a fluorescent, and a quencher according to the principle of the real-time MCDA assay. The H. influenzae real-time MCDA reactions were performed using a fluorescence instrument at 63°C for 40 min. The H. influenzae real-time MCDA assay can specifically detect H. influenzae without any cross-reaction with other bacteria as our results confirmed. The sensitivity of our assay is as low as 10 CFU per reaction. To validate its feasibility, our assay was applied to 40 DNA extracted from sputum samples. The results obtained from H. influenzae real-time MCDA were compared with that of H. influenzae–loop-mediated isothermal amplification (H. influenzae-LAMP) and MCDA-based lateral flow biosensor (MCDA-LFB). The positive rate of the real-time MCDA assay was 62.5%, which was consistent with the H. influenzae-MCDA-LFB assay, but was more sensitive than H. influenzae-LAMP (57.5%). Furthermore, the H. influenzae real-time MCDA assay takes only 40 min, which was less than that of a traditional PCR test. Taken together, the H. influenzae real-time MCDA assay reported here offers a new and valuable diagnostic tool for the reliable and rapid detection of H. influenzae.

Abstract
Background: The decrease in the rate of meningitis due to Haemophilus influenzae type b after vaccine introduction and a possible change in epidemiology of H. influenzae disease highlights the need for continuous serotype surveillance. Methods: A single-tube multiplex PCR assay for serotyping of H. influenzae was developed and deployed. Results: During 2003−2020, 108 meningitis cases due to H. influenzae were notified; 86 (80%) were confirmed and serotyped by molecular methods. The overall specificity and sensitivity of the assay were estimated (100% PPV and NPV respectively). The overall mean annual reported incidence for H. influenzae was 0.02, while for Hib and non-b meningitis equaled 0.02 and 0.03 per 100 000, respectively. Analysis by age group revealed that H. influenzae peaks in toddlers and children 0−4 years and in adults >45 years old. Among the serotyped cases, 39.8% were identified as Hib, 46.3% as NTHi, and 0.9% and 2.8% as serotypes a (Hia) and f (Hif)) respectively. Conclusions: Low incidence due to Hib was observed while non-typeable H. influenzae (NTHi) and serotypes Hia and Hif seem to emerge. The application of the current assay discloses the ongoing change of invasive H. influenzae disease trends during the Hib post-vaccine era.

Abstract
Haemophilus influenzae is an opportunistic pathogen adapted to the human respiratory tract. Non-typeable H. influenzae are highly heterogeneous, but few studies have analysed the genomic variability of capsulated strains. This study aims to examine the genetic diversity of 37 serotype f isolates from the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain, and to compare all capsulated genomes available on public databases. Serotype f isolates belonged to CC124 and shared few single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (n = 10,999), but a high core genome (> 80%). Three main clades were identified by the presence of 75, 60 and 41 exclusive genes for each clade, respectively. Multi-locus sequence type analysis of all capsulated genomes revealed a reduced number of clonal complexes associated with each serotype. Pangenome analysis showed a large pool of genes (n = 6360), many of which were accessory genome (n = 5323). Phylogenetic analysis revealed that serotypes a, b, and f had greater diversity. The total number of SNPs in serotype f was significantly lower than in serotypes a, b, and e (p < 0.0001), indicating low variability within the serotype f clonal complexes. Capsulated H. influenzae are genetically homogeneous, with few lineages in each serotype. Serotype f has high genetic stability regardless of time and country of isolation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Globally, pneumonia is the leading cause of death among children. Few data exist regarding the effect of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine and 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-13) on the burden of childhood pneumonia in African settings. METHODS We collected data on children aged 1 to 59 months at 3 hospitals in Botswana. Hib vaccine and PCV-13 were introduced in Botswana in November 2010 and July 2012, respectively. We compared pneumonia hospitalizations and deaths prevaccine (January 2009 to October 2010) with postvaccine (January 2013 to December 2017) using seasonally adjusted, interrupted time-series analyses. RESULTS We identified 6943 pneumonia hospitalizations and 201 pneumonia deaths. In the prevaccine period, pneumonia hospitalizations and deaths increased by 24% (rate, 1.24; 95% CI, .94-1.64) and 59% (rate, 1.59; 95% CI, .87-2.90) per year, respectively. Vaccine introduction was associated with a 48% (95% CI, 29-62%) decrease in the number of pneumonia hospitalizations and a 50% (95% CI, 1-75%) decrease in the number of pneumonia deaths between the end of the prevaccine period (October 2010) and the beginning of the postvaccine period (January 2013). During the postvaccine period, pneumonia hospitalizations and deaths declined by 6% (rate, .94; 95% CI, .89-.99) and 22% (rate, .78; 95% CI, .67-.92) per year, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Pneumonia hospitalizations and deaths among children declined sharply following introduction of Hib vaccine and PCV-13 in Botswana. This effect was sustained for more than 5 years after vaccine introduction, supporting the long-term effectiveness of these vaccines in preventing childhood pneumonia in Botswana.

Abstract
Haemophilus influenzae serotype b (Hib) was previously the most common cause of bacterial meningitis and an important etiologic agent of pneumonia in children aged <5 years. Its major virulence factor is the polyribosyl ribitol phosphate (PRP) polysaccharide capsule. In the 1980s, PRP-protein conjugate Hib vaccines were developed and are now included in almost all national immunization programs, achieving a sustained decline in invasive Hib infections. However, invasive Hib disease has not yet been eliminated in countries with low vaccine coverage, and sporadic outbreaks of Hib infection still occur occasionally in countries with high vaccine coverage. Over the past 2 decades, other capsulated serotypes have been recognized increasingly as causing invasive infections. H. influenzae serotype a (Hia) is now a major cause of invasive infection in Indigenous communities of North America, prompting a possible requirement for an Hia conjugate vaccine. H. influenzae serotypes e and f are now more common than serotype b in Europe. Significant year-to-year increases in nontypeable H. influenzae invasive infections have occurred in many regions of the world. Invasive H. influenzae infections are now seen predominantly in patients at the extremes of life and those with underlying comorbidities. This review provides a comprehensive and critical overview of the current global epidemiology of invasive H. influenzae infections in different geographic regions of the world. It discusses those now at risk of invasive Hib disease, describes the emergence of other severe invasive H. influenzae infections, and emphasizes the importance of long-term, comprehensive, clinical and microbiologic surveillance to monitor a vaccine's impact.

Abstract
H. influenzae serotype b (Hib) used to be the commonest cause of bacterial meningitis in young children. The widespread use of Hib conjugate vaccine has profoundly altered the epidemiology of H. influenzae meningitis. This short review reports on the spectrum of H. influenzae meningitis thirty years after Hib conjugate vaccine was first introduced into a National Immunization Program (NIP). Hib meningitis is now uncommon, but meningitis caused by other capsulated serotypes of H. influenzae and non-typeable strains (NTHi) should be considered. H. influenzae serotype a (Hia) has emerged as a significant cause of meningitis in Indigenous children in North America, which may necessitate a Hia conjugate vaccine. Cases of Hie, Hif, and NTHi meningitis are predominantly seen in young children and less common in older age groups. This short review reports on the spectrum of H. influenzae meningitis thirty years after Hib conjugate vaccine was first introduced into a NIP.

Abstract
A 40-year-old man with systemic lupus erythematosus taking consecutive oral corticosteroids developed a high-grade fever and disorder of consciousness following acute rhinitis. Haemophilus influenzae type f (Hif) was found and isolated from the blood and cerebrospinal fluid by culture, leading to a diagnosis of meningitis. The prevalence of H. influenzae type b (Hib) infections has decreased due to routine immunization. As a result, the prevalence of invasive non-Hib, including Hif infection, is increasing as a common H. influenzae infection in children and adults. Physicians should be aware of non-Hib H. influenzae infection, even though the Hib vaccine is widely used in Japan.

Abstract
Aim: An overview of recent epidemiology and disease burden, independent of patient age, of diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, poliomyelitis and Hemophilus influenzae invasive disease in the UK. Materials & methods: A systematic review was undertaken. Outcomes included incidence, prevalence, risk factors and cost burden. Results: 39 publications were included. Hepatitis B prevalence is high among certain risk groups. A small pertussis risk remains in pregnancy and for infants, which led to the introduction of maternal vaccination. H. influenzae invasive disease cases are limited to rare serotypes. Polio, tetanus and diphtheria are well controlled. Conclusion: The evaluated diseases are currently well controlled, thanks to a comprehensive vaccination program, with a generally low clinical and cost burden.

Abstract
We present a case of unusual cellulitis of the lower extremities caused by Haemophilus influenzae (HI). A 64-year-old female with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) with a suppressed viral load on treatment, presented with severe, very painful cellulitis of her lower extremity. CT scan did not show any gas or collections; however, she was taken to the operating room for concern of necrotizing fasciitis but no evidence of deep tissue involvement was found. Blood culture and wound culture were positive forHI type F (HiF), a newly emergent pathogenic capsulatedHI that has emerged post-HI type B (HiB) vaccination.

Abstract
Haemophilus influenzae causes common and sometimes severe adult and pediatric disease including chronic obstructive respiratory disease, otitis media and infections of the central nervous system. Serotype b strains, with a b-type capsule, have been the historical cause of invasive disease, and the introduction of a serotype b-specific vaccine has led to their decline. However, unencapsulated or non-b-type H. influenzae infections are not prevented by the vaccine and appear to be increasing in frequency. Here we report two pediatric cases of severe central nervous system H. influenzae infection presenting to the same hospital in San Diego, California during the same week in January 2016. Due to good vaccine coverage in this part of the world, H. influenzae cases are normally rare and seeing two cases in the same week was unexpected. We thus suspected a recent transmission chain, and possible local outbreak. To test this hypothesis, we isolated and sequenced whole genomes from each patient and placed them in a phylogenetic tree spanning the known diversity of H. influenzae. Surprisingly, we found that the two isolates (SD2016_1 and SD2016_2) belonged to distantly related lineages, suggesting two independent transmission events and ruling out a local outbreak. Despite being distantly related, the two isolates belong to two different lineages that have exchanged capsule loci in the recent past. Therefore, as in other bacterial pathogens, capsule switching by horizontal gene transfer may be an important evolutionary mechanism of vaccine evasion in H. influenzae.

Abstract
Haemophilus influenzae reference laboratory from Portugal characterized the entire collection of 260 H. influenzae invasive isolates received between 2011 and 2018, with the purpose of updating the last published data (2002-2010). Capsular serotypes and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns were determined. The ftsI gene encoding the transpeptidase domain of PBP3 was sequenced for β-lactamase-negative ampicillin-resistant (BLNAR) isolates. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) was performed to examine genetic relatedness among isolates. The majority of H. influenzae invasive isolates are nonencapsulated (NTHi-79.2%). Among encapsulated isolates (20.8%), the most characterized serotype was serotype b (13.5%), followed by serotype f (3.1%), serotype a (2.7%), and serotype e (1.5%). In contrast to NTHi that mainly affected the elderly (64.0%; ≥ 65 years old), most encapsulated isolates were characterized in preschool children (55.6%). Comparing the two periods, β-lactamase production increased from 10.4 to 13.5% (p = 0.032) and low-BLNAR (MIC ≥ 1 mg/L) isolates from 7.7 to 10.5% (p = 0.017). NTHi showed high genetic diversity (60.7%), in opposition to encapsulated isolates that were clonal within each serotype. Interestingly, ST103 and ST57 were the predominant STs among NTHi, with ST103 being associated with β-lactamase-producers and ST57 with non-β-lactamase-producers. In Portugal, susceptible and genetically diverse NTHi H. influenzae continues to be responsible for invasive disease, mainly in the elderly. Nevertheless, we are now concerned with Hib circulating in children we believe to have been vaccinated. Our data reiterates the need for continued surveillance, which will be useful in the development of public health prevention strategies.

Abstract
Introduction. Certain nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae cannot be assigned a sequence type (ST) by Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST) due to the lack of the fucK gene, one of seven MLST loci in H. influenzae, which encodes a fucose-operon enzyme.Aims. To confirm whether the loss of fucK is also found in the encapsulated strains, we analysed clinical isolates of H. influenzae serotype e (Hie).Methodology. We conducted MLST, PFGE, and antimicrobial susceptibility tests of 45 Hie strains; the majority (n=43) were derived from respiratory samples of pediatric patients at Chiba Children's Hospital between 2000 and 2016. The two remaining strains were obtained from the blood of elderly patients with invasive H. influenzae diseases (IHiDs) between 2015 and 2016 at general hospitals. For the fucK-negative strains, PCR analysis for fucose operon was also performed.Results. Four STs (ST18, 122, 621 and 1758) were assigned to 13 strains, and remaining 32 (including one associated with IHiD) were fucK-negative, completely missing the fucose operon. The allelic profiles of six other loci were identical among 31 strains and to that of ST18, 122 and 621, and these strains were genetically closely related. Forty of 45 isolates were ampicillin-sensitive.Conclusions. The loss of fucK was frequently observed in clinical isolates of Hie from children. Moreover, fucK-negative Hie may be the cause of IHiD in adult patients. The majority of Hie, including fucK-negative strains, were shown to be clonally related and were ampicillin sensitive. This represents the first report examining fucK losses in encapsulated H. influenzae.

Abstract
Haemophilus influenzae is a gram-negative coccobacillus that colonizes the nasopharyngeal surface and upper respiratory tract of healthy individuals and includes six encapsulated serotypes as well as non-encapsulated, non-typeable strains. Since the widespread use of the Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccine implemented in 1990, the majority of invasive illness now seen in the United States is secondary to capsular serotypes other than type b and non-typeable strains with the largest burden of disease affecting the extremes of age-infants and the elderly. We report a case of acute Haemophilus influenzae type f meningitis in a 12-month-old female who was previously healthy and had been fully immunized. She demonstrated clinical improvement on ceftriaxone, but persistent fever and ear-tugging resulted in obtaining an MRI that displayed bilateral subdural empyemas requiring burr-hole craniotomy, central venous thrombosis requiring anticoagulation, and bilateral sensorineural hearing loss requiring cochlear implants. Immunological studies confirmed immunocompetency and appropriate response to her previous Hib vaccination, suggesting a significant impact of bacterial virulence. These complications, with the exception of sensorineural hearing loss, have not been reported in the literature for Haemophilus influenzae type f and should be considered in the care of these patients despite clinical appearance given the severity of complications and potential for acute decompensation. Despite the success of vaccination in reducing invasive disease, cases of H. influenzae meningitis continue to occur via less common encapsulated serotypes with unknown complications, making the management and treatment of these infections more difficult for practitioners.

Abstract
Encapsulated Haemophilus influenzae strains belong to type-specific genetic lineages. Reliable capsule typing requires PCR, but a more efficient method would be useful. We evaluated capsule typing by using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry. Isolates of all capsule types (a−f and nontypeable; n = 258) and isogenic capsule transformants (types a−d) were investigated. Principal component and biomarker analyses of mass spectra showed clustering, and mass peaks correlated with capsule type-specific genetic lineages. We used 31 selected isolates to construct a capsule typing database. Validation with the remaining isolates (n = 227) showed 100% sensitivity and 92.2% specificity for encapsulated strains (a−f; n = 61). Blinded validation of a supplemented database (n = 50) using clinical isolates (n = 126) showed 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity for encapsulated strains (b, e, and f; n = 28). MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry is an accurate method for capsule typing of H. influenzae.

Abstract
We report the case of a 36-year-old previously healthy woman who presented with fever and headache. Blood and cerebrospinal cultures and a bacterial analysis revealed the presence of β-lactamase non-producing ampicillin-resistant Haemophilus influenzae type f (Hif) with sequence type 124. Accordingly, the patient was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis with bacteremia caused by Hif. She had normal humoral immunity, and antibiotic therapy rapidly improved her condition. Our case indicates that serotype replacement can occur in Japan and suggests that a certain sequence type causes invasive Haemophilus influenzae disease, regardless of host immunity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe eight cases of invasive non-type b Haemophilus influenzae disease in children admitted to Hospital de Clínicas of Universidade Estadual de Campinas. CASES DESCRIPTION In 2015, there were eight cases of invasive non-type b H. influenzae disease. We tested the ampicillin sensitivity and beta-lactamase production of the strains identified and performed the genotyping. Molecular typing was determined by Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis. Four patients were diagnosed with bacteremia; in two cases, H. influenzae was detected in the pleural fluid, and two patients had meningitis. Patients with comorbidities represented 37.5% of cases. Except for the strain of one patient - not sent to the reference laboratory -, all were ampicillin-sensitive and non-beta-lactamase-producing. Genotyping identified four non-capsular, one type c, and two type a strains. Molecular typing ruled out nosocomial transmission since all serotypes were distinct regarding genotype. COMMENTS The rise in cases of invasive non-type b H. influenzae infection was real. There was no nosocomial transmission, and we found no justification for the increase. These data indicate the need for surveillance to correctly diagnose, monitor, and understand the spectrum of non-type b H. influenzae disease.

Abstract
Routine immunization of infants with conjugate vaccines against Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) has greatly reduced the incidence of invasive Hib disease; however changes in the epidemiology of H. influenzae disease have occurred. We describe the epidemiology of invasive H. influenzae disease and the characterization of isolates collected in Italy between 2012 and 2016. Trends in the overall incidence of invasive H. influenzae disease were calculated. Isolates were characterized by PCR capsular genotyping, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, ampicillin resistance-associated gene sequencing and MLST. Trends in incidence by serotype and serotype-specific distribution were estimated using multiple imputation of missing data. The overall incidence of invasive H. influenzae disease increased 22.5% yearly (from 0.11/100,000 in 2012 to 0.24/100,000 in 2016). Most cases (82.0%) were due to non-typeable H. influenzae (NTHi). An increasing trend in NTHi disease burden was estimated; the highest rise was among infants <12 months (40.8% annual increase). Invasive Hib disease showed a fluctuating trend with a clear increase in 2016, while we found an increasing trend for disease due to non-Hib capsulated serotypes in the elderly (32.9% annual increase). Ampicillin resistance mediated by either β-lactamase or altered penicillin-binding proteins 3 (PBP3) increased. In spite of genetic diversity of NTHi, sequence types (STs) associated with ampicillin resistance status were identified (ST103/ST106 linked to β-lactamase production and ST14 linked to a specific PBP3 substitution pattern). The increasing trend in invasive NTHi disease in infants is of concern underlying the need for the development of a future vaccine against NTHi.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine was introduced as a voluntary vaccine in December 2008 and was included in the national routine immunization program in April 2013 in Japan. Currently, no nationwide data are available to evaluate the effectiveness of Hib vaccine in Japan. METHODS To evaluate the effectiveness of Hib vaccine in Japan, nationwide active population-based surveillance of culture-proven invasive infections caused by H. influenzae in children was performed in 2008-2017 in 10 prefectures in Japan (covering approximately 23% of the total Japanese population). Clinical data were recorded on a standardized case report form. Capsular type and antimicrobial susceptibility of the H. influenzae isolates were examined. The incidence rate ratio (IRR) and its confidence interval (CI) were calculated to compare data from 5 years before and that from after the introduction of the national routine Hib vaccine immunization program. RESULTS During the 10-year study period, 566 invasive H. influenzae disease cases including 336 meningitis cases were identified. The average number of invasive H. influenzae disease cases among children <5 years of age during 2013-2017 decreased by 93% (IRR: 0.07, 95%CI 0.05-0.10, p < 0.001) compared with those occurring during 2008-2012. Hib strains have not been isolated from invasive H. influenzae disease cases since 2014; however, non-typeable H. influenzae and H. influenzae type f isolates have been noted as causes of invasive H. influenzae diseases among children <5 years in the post-Hib vaccine era. CONCLUSIONS After the governmental subsidization of the Hib vaccine, invasive Hib disease cases decreased dramatically in the study population, as per our surveillance. Continuous surveillance is necessary to monitor the effectiveness of Hib vaccine and for detecting any emerging invasive capsular types.

Abstract
We describe the epidemiology of invasive Haemophilus influenzae disease during 2007-2014 in 12 European countries and assess overall H. influenzae disease trends by serotype and patient age. Mean annual notification rate was 0.6 cases/100,000 population, with an increasing annual trend of 3.3% (95% CI 2.3% to 4.3%). The notification rate was highest for patients <1 month of age (23.4 cases/100,000 population). Nontypeable H. influenzae (NTHi) caused 78% of all cases and showed increasing trends among persons <1 month and >20 years of age. Serotype f cases showed an increasing trend among persons >60 years of age. Serotype b cases showed decreasing trends among persons 1-5 months, 1-4 years, and >40 years of age. Sustained success of routine H. influenzae serotype b vaccination is evident. Surveillance systems must adopt a broad focus for invasive H. influenzae disease. Increasing reports of NTHi, particularly among neonates, highlight the potential benefit of a vaccine against NTHi.

Abstract
Haemophilus influenzae is an important aetiological organism of both adult and child respiratory disease. The number of non-typeable (NTHi) invasive H. influenzae isolates referred to the Queensland (QLD) Public Health Microbiology laboratory has increased notably year-by-year. In this study we used whole-genome sequencing to molecularly characterise 100 referred invasive H. influenzae, including 74 NTHi isolates over a 15-year period, observing the carriage of capsular and putative virulence genes, including the major adhesins, antimicrobial resistance genes and population diversity. Encapsulated isolates were largely clonal, however NTHi isolates displayed high genetic variability by MLST and single nucleotide polymorphism typing with no dominant clone observed. The only mechanism for β-lactam resistance identified in the QLD isolates was β-lactamase production. No single set of virulence determinants was conclusively associated with invasive QLD NTHi isolates.

Abstract
This study aimed to identify trends in frequency, serotype, and antimicrobial susceptibility of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae isolated from middle ear fluid specimens of children aged≤15 years (mean, 2 years), before and after the introduction of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) and the H. influenzae type b vaccine, at a pediatric facility in Japan. Sixty-six S. pneumoniae and 88 H. influenzae strains were isolated from 820 middle ear fluid samples. Serotyping and antimicrobial susceptibility testing were performed. The study time-frame was divided into period 1 (2007-2010) and period 2 (2011-2014), according to the availability of vaccine public funding. The S. pneumoniae detection rate decreased from 9.6% in period 1-6.1% in period 2 (p = 0.042). PCV7 serotypes decreased from 56.8% to 9.1% (p = 0.0002). No significant change was observed for the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) serotypes: 72.7% in period 1 and 59.1% in period 2. Penicillin-resistant strains (penicillin G-MIC ≥2 μg/mL) decreased from 25% to 4.5% (p = 0.038). Detection rates for H. influenzae did not change significantly: 10.3% in period 1 and 11.3% in period 2. Serotypes were mostly non-typeable: 97.9% in period 1 and 90.2% in period 2, and only one serotype b strain was isolated in each period. The frequency of ampicillin-resistant strains (MIC ≥4 μg/mL) did not change. These results show a preventative effect of PCV7 on otitis media due to S. pneumoniae. PCV7 was replaced with PCV13 in 2013 in Japan; therefore, a further decrease in pneumococcal otitis media is anticipated in the future.

Abstract
These infections are emerging worldwide, especially in young children and the elderly. The incidence of severe Haemophilus influenza infections, such as sepsis and meningitis, has declined substantially since the introduction of the H. influenzae serotype b vaccine. However, the H. influenzae type b vaccine fails to protect against nontypeable H. influenzae strains, which have become increasingly frequent causes of invasive disease, especially among children and the elderly. We summarize recent literature supporting the emergence of invasive nontypeable H. influenzae and describe mechanisms that may explain its increasing prevalence over the past 2 decades.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence of Haemophilus
influenzae type b (Hib) nasopharyngeal (NP) colonisation among healthy
children where Hib vaccination using a 3p+0 dosing schedule has been routinely
administered for 10 years with sustained coverage (> 90%). NP swabs were collected
from 2,558 children who had received the Hib vaccine, of whom 1,379 were 12-< 24
months (m) old and 1,179 were 48-< 60 m old. Hi strains were identified by
molecular methods. Hi carriage prevalence was 45.1% (1,153/2,558) and the prevalence
in the 12-< 24 m and 48-< 60 m age groups were 37.5% (517/1,379) and 53.9%
(636/1,179), respectively. Hib was identified in 0.6% (16/2,558) of all children in
the study, being 0.8% (11/1,379) and 0.4% (5/1,179) among the 12-< 24 m and
48-< 60 m age groups, respectively. The nonencapsulate Hi colonisation was 43% (n
= 1,099) and was significantly more frequent at 48-< 60 m of age (51.6%, n = 608)
compared with that at 12-< 24 m of age (35.6%, n = 491). The overall resistance
rates to ampicillin and chloramphenicol were 16.5% and 3.7%, respectively; the
co-resistance was detected in 2.6%. Our findings showed that the Hib carrier rate in
healthy children under five years was very low after 10 years of the introduction of
the Hib vaccine.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In countries with established Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) immunization programs, nontypeable H. influenzae (NTHi) is now responsible for nearly all invasive H. influenzae cases across all age groups. METHODS Public Health England (PHE) conducts enhanced national surveillance of invasive H. influenzae disease in England and Wales. Invasive NTHi isolates submitted to Public Health England from children of ages 1 month to 10 years during 2003-2010 were characterized by multilocus sequence typing (MLST). Detailed clinical information was obtained for all laboratory-confirmed cases of invasive NTHi disease in children during 2009-2013. RESULTS In England and Wales, there were 7797 cases of invasive H. influenzae disease diagnosed during 2000-2013 and 1585 (20%) occurred in children aged 1 month to 10 years, where NTHi was responsible for 31-51 cases (incidence, 0.53-0.92/100,000) annually. Detailed clinical follow-up of 214 confirmed NTHi cases diagnosed in this age-group during 2009-2013 revealed that 52% (n = 111) occurred in <2-year-old and 52% (n=110) had comorbidity. Bacteremic pneumonia was the most common clinical presentation (n = 99, 46%), 16% (n = 34) required intensive care and 11% (n = 23) died. Characterization by biotyping and MLST of 316 NTHi strains from children with invasive disease during 2003-2010 revealed a genetically heterogeneous population (155 MLSTs) with diverse biotypes and no association with comorbidity status, clinical disease or outcome. CONCLUSIONS The high level of genetic diversity in invasive NTHi strains highlights the difficulties in developing an effective vaccine against this pathogen.

Abstract
After successful introduction of anti-Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) serotype b vaccination program in Poland, invasive non-b or nontypeable H. influenzae infections have been reported more frequently alike in other countries all over the world. In this paper, we report 2 cases of H. influenzae serotype f (Hif) meningitis with severe clinical presentations which are rarely seen in previously healthy children.The first case is a 6-year-old girl who was admitted to pediatric ward with signs of meningitis. Laboratory tests confirmed bacteremic meningitis caused by Hif. The girl responded very well to administered treatment and recovered without any further complications. No underlying comorbidities were found. The second patient was a 4-year-old boy who, in course of Hif bacteremic meningitis, developed rapid septicemia and, despite aggressive treatment, died within a few hours of hospitalization. The child's past history was unremarkable.By presenting these cases, we would like to remind clinicians that invasive non-b Hi infections can become fatal not only in the group of the youngest children or children with coexisting comorbidities, as most commonly reported in the worldwide literature. At the same time, we want to emphasize the legitimacy of constant monitoring Hi epidemiology in order to take accurate actions if necessary.

Abstract
In Japan, routine Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccination began in 2013. Thus, similar to other countries, a strain shift is expected in the near future. We experienced a case of H. influenzae type f (Hif) bacteremia in a 66-year-old man. The primary focus of the infection was the soft tissue of the left lower leg, which is an extremely rare origin in adults. Subsequently, we conducted multilocus sequence typing and identified the strain as sequence type 124, which is the most common invasive strain of Hif worldwide. This case may mark the beginning of an Hif strain shift in Japan.

Abstract
In an era when Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccine is widely used, the incidence of Hib as a cause of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) has dramatcally declined. Non-typeable H. influenzae (NTHi) strains and, occasionally, other encapsulated serotypes of H. influenzae are now the cause of the majority of invasive H. influenzae infectons, including bacteraemic CAP. NTHi have long been recognised as an important cause of lower respiratory tract infecton, including pneumonia, in adults, especially those with underlying diseases. The role of NTHi as a cause of non-bacteraemic CAP in children is less clear. In this review the evidence for the role of NTHi and capsulated strains of H. influenzae will be examined.

Abstract
We analyzed non-serotype b encapsulated Haemophilus influenzae (non-b Hi) isolated from pediatric patients at Chiba Children's Hospital during 2000-2012. Among 3,532 clinical isolates of H. influenzae, there were 57 (1.6%) strains of non-b Hi, 152 (4.3%) of serotype b H. influenzae (Hib), and 3,323 (94.1%) of non-typeable H. influenzae (NTHi). Fifty-seven strains of non-b Hi were serotyped useing the slide agglutination test and PCR. Twenty-nine strains were identified as type e (Hie) and 28 as type f (Hif), and the results according to the slide agglutination test and PCR were completely identical. Whereas 52 of 57 strains (91.2%) were isolated from respiratory specimen, only one Hif strain (1.8%) was isolated from a sterile site. There were 47 (82.4%) β-lactamase-non-producing ampicillin (ABPC)-sensitive strains (BLNAS), 5 (8.8%) β-lactamase-producing strains (BLP), and only 1 (1.8%) β-lactamase-non-producing ABPC-resistant strain (BLNAR). Thus the frequency of non-b Hi was lower than that of Hib. The source of non-b Hi was similar to that of NTHi, which was mainly isolated from respiratory specimen. Antimicrobial resistant pattern of non-b Hi was different from that of Hib in which the frequency of BLP was relatively high, and NTHi in which that of BLNAR was high. An increase of invasive H. influenzae infections caused by NTHi, Hie, and Hif was reported in the countries where Hib vaccine had been widely used. Because it is assumed that invasive non-Hib infection will be predominant in the near future in Japan, serotyping of invasive strains is crucial. Continuous monitoring of distribution of non-b Hi in the clinical isolates of H. influenzae is also important.

Abstract
The incidence of invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) disease has significantly decreased since the introduction of an efficient vaccine against Hib. However, in contrast to Hib, infections caused by H. influenzae serotype f (Hif) are emerging. We recently did a whole genome sequencing of an invasive Hif isolate, and reported that Hif interacts with factor H by expressing protein H (PH). In this study, upon screening with various human complement regulators, we revealed that PH is also a receptor for vitronectin (Vn), an abundant plasma protein that regulates the terminal pathway of the human complement system in addition to being a component of the extracellular matrix. Bacterial Vn binding was significantly reduced when the lph gene encoding PH was deleted in an invasive Hif isolate. The dissociation constant (KD) of the interaction between recombinant PH and Vn was 2.2 μM, as revealed by Biolayer interferometry. We found that PH has different regions for simultaneous interaction with both Vn and factor H, and that it recognized the C-terminal part of Vn (aa 352-362). Importantly, PH-dependent Vn binding resulted in better survival of the wild-type Hif or PH-expressing Escherichia coli when exposed to human serum. Finally, we observed that PH mediated an increased bacterial adherence to alveolar epithelial cells in the presence of Vn. In conclusion, our study reveals that PH most likely plays an important role in Hif pathogenesis by increasing serum resistance and adhesion to the airways.

Abstract
Seven-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) was included in the UK national immunisation program in 2006, and this was replaced by thirteen-valent PCV in 2010. During this time, the carriage of vaccine-type Streptococcus pneumoniae decreased but pneumococcal carriage remained stable due to increases in non-vaccine-type S. pneumoniae. Carriage studies have been undertaken in various countries to monitor vaccine-type replacement and to help predict the serotypes, which may cause invasive disease. There has been less focus on how conjugate vaccines indirectly affect colonization of other nasopharyngeal bacteria. If the nasopharynx is treated as a niche, then bacterial dynamics are accepted to occur. Alterations in these dynamics have been shown due to seasonal changes, antibiotic use, and sibling/day care interaction. It has been shown that, following PCV7 introduction, an eradication of pneumococcal vaccine types has resulted in increases in the abundance of other respiratory pathogens including Haemophilus influenzae and Staphylococcus aureus. These changes are difficult to attribute to PCV7 introduction alone and these studies do not account for further changes due to PCV13 implementation. This review aims to describe nasopharyngeal cocarriage of respiratory pathogens in the PCV era.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) frequently causes noninvasive upper respiratory tract infections in children but can cause invasive disease, mainly in older adults. An increased burden of invasive NTHi disease in the perinatal period has been reported by a number of studies. Here we describe the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and outcome of neonatal invasive H. influenzae disease in England and Wales over a 5-year period. METHODS Public Health England conducts enhanced national surveillance of invasive H. influenzae disease in England and Wales. Detailed clinical information was obtained for all laboratory-confirmed cases in infants aged ≤31 days during 2009-2013. RESULTS Overall, 118 live-born neonates had laboratory-confirmed invasive H. influenzae disease: 115 (97%) were NTHi, 2 were serotype f, and 1 was serotype b. NTHi was isolated within 48 hours of birth (early-onset) in 110 of 115 (96%) cases, and 70 of 110 (64%) presented with septicemia. Only 17 mothers (15%) had suspected bacterial infection requiring antibiotics during labor. Few (8/110 [7%]) neonates had comorbidities. The incidence of early-onset NTHi increased exponentially with prematurity, from 0.9 per 100 000 (95% confidence interval [CI], .6-1.4) in term neonates to 342 per 100 000 (95% CI, 233.9-482.7) in neonates born at <28 weeks' gestation (incidence rate ratio, 365 [95% CI, 205-659]; P < .001). Case fatality for early-onset NTHi was 19% (21/110); each additional gestational week reduced the odds of dying by 21% (odds ratio, 0.79 [95% CI, .69-.90]; P < .01). A quarter of neonates who survived experienced long-term complications. CONCLUSIONS Early-onset neonatal NTHi disease is strongly associated with premature birth and causes significant morbidity and mortality.

Following the introduction of vaccination against Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), cases of invasive encapsulated Hib disease have decreased markedly. This study aimed to examine subsequent epidemiological trends in invasive H. influenzae disease in Queensland, Australia and in particular, assess the clinical impact and public health implications of invasive non-typable H. influenzae (NTHi) strains. A multicentre retrospective study was conducted from July 2000 to June 2013. Databases of major laboratories in Queensland including Queensland Forensic and Scientific Services (jurisdictional referral laboratory for isolate typing) were examined to identify cases. Demographic, infection site, Indigenous status, serotype, and mortality data were collected. In total, 737 invasive isolates were identified, of which 586 (79·5%) were serotyped. Hib, NTHi and encapsulated non-b strains, respectively, constituted 12·1%, 69·1% and 18·8% of isolates. The predominant encapsulated non-b strains were f (45·5%) and a (27·3%) serotypes. Of isolates causing meningitis, 48·9% were NTHi, 14·9% Hib, 14·9% Hie, 10·6% Hif, 6·4% Hia and 4·3% were untyped. During the study period, there was an increase in the incidence of invasive NTHi disease (P = 0·007) with seasonal peaks in winter and spring (P 0·001) and Hib (P = 0·039) than non-Indigenous patients. In Queensland, invasive H. influenzae disease is now predominantly encountered in adults and most commonly caused by NTHi strains with demonstrated pathogenicity extending to otherwise young or immunocompetent individuals. Routine public health notification of these strains is recommended and recent available immunization options should be considered.

Abstract
In Japan, publicly subsidized Haemophilus influenzae serotype b vaccines became available in 2011; consequently, the incidence of invasive H. influenzae infection in paediatric patients of less than 5 years of age decreased dramatically. In 2013, the first case of H. influenzae serotype f (Hif) meningitis in a Japanese infant was reported, and another case of Hif meningitis in a Japanese infant was observed in 2013. We experienced a fatal paediatric case of Hif bacteraemia in 2004; therefore, we conducted an analysis of the three Hif strains isolated from these three Japanese children with invasive Hif infections. All three strains were β-lactamase-non-producing, ampicillin-sensitive strains, with MICs of 1 µg ml(-1) or less. However, one of the three strains showed slightly elevated MICs for ampicillin (1 µg ml(-1)), cefotaxime (0.25 µg ml(-1)) and meropenem (0.13 µg ml(-1)). A molecular analysis by multilocus sequence typing identified all three strains as sequence type (ST) 124, which is a predominant invasive Hif strain in many countries. SmaI-digested PFGE showed variable DNA fragmentation patterns among the strains, suggesting that some highly virulent strains have originated from a single ST124 clone and caused invasive Hif infections in Japan. Additional studies are needed to determine the factors that have led to the clonal expansion of virulent ST124 strains.

Abstract
Spread of antibiotic resistance is mediated by clonal lineages of bacteria that besides being resistant also possess other properties promoting their success. Some vaccines already in use, such as the pneumococcal conjugate vaccines, have had an effect on these successful clones, but at the same time have allowed for the expansion and resistance evolution of previously minor clones not covered by the vaccine. Since resistance frequently is horizontally transferred it will be difficult to generate a vaccine that covers all possible genetic lineages prone to develop resistance unless the vaccine target(s) is absolutely necessary for spread and/or disease development. Targeting the resistance mechanism itself by a vaccine is an interesting but hitherto unexplored approach.

Abstract
Haemophilus influenzae is one of the major pathogenic bacteria in upper respiratory tract of children. In this study, the presence of various H. influenzae genotypes were followed-up for at least 13 weeks, starting from one week before surgery. Forty-one children with chronic adenoid hypertrophy were prospectively enrolled to the study. The consecutive swabs of adenoid and tonsils, two before adenotonsillectomy and two after the surgery together with homogenates of adenotonsillar tissues and lysates of the CD14(+) cells fraction were acquired from 34 children undergoing adenotonsillectomy. Up to ten isolates from each patient at each collection period were genotyped using a PFGE method and their capsular type and antibiotic susceptibility was determined. Of the 1001 isolates examined, we identified 325 isolates grouped into 16 persistent genotypes, which colonized throats for more than seven weeks and were not eliminated by the surgery. The other 506 isolates grouped into 48 transient genotypes that had been eliminated by the surgery. The resistance to ampicillin were found in 23.8% of the transient strains, and 4.7% of the newly acquired strains following the surgical intervention. In contrast, none of the persistent strains were resistant to ampicillin; however, these strains showed apparently higher level of resistance to co-trimoxazole when compared to transient strains. The transient and persistent strains did not significantly differ in bacterial viability in the biofilms formed in vitro. Some of the strains were identified in two or three different patients and were considered as the strains circulating in the region between 2010 and 2012.

Abstract
In late October 2011, the Monroe County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) was notified of a suspected case of meningitis in a 9-year old girl from Monroe County, NY. Laboratory testing at the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Wadsworth Center confirmed the identification of Haemophilus influenzae serotype e (Hie) isolated from the patient’s cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) using real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The universal immunization of infants with conjugate H. influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine has significantly reduced the incidence of invasive Hib disease, including meningitis, one of the most serious complications for infected children. Not surprisingly, as the epidemiology of invasive H. influenzae continues to change, non-Hib serotypes will likely become more common. The findings reported here underscore the importance for clinicians, public health officials, and laboratory staff to consider non-Hib pathogens in pediatric cases of meningitis, especially when initial investigations are inconclusive.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of invasive disease caused by encapsulated Haemophilus influenzae type f (Hif) has increased in the post-H. influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine era. We previously annotated the first complete Hif genome from a clinical isolate (KR494) that caused septic shock and necrotizing myositis. Here, the full genome of Hif KR494 was compared to sequenced reference strains Hib 10810, capsule type d (Hid) Rd Kw20, and finally nontypeable H. influenzae 3655. The goal was to identify possible genomic characteristics that may shed light upon the pathogenesis of Hif. RESULTS The Hif KR494 genome exhibited large regions of synteny with other H. influenzae, but also distinct genome rearrangements. A predicted Hif core genome of 1390 genes was shared with the reference strains, and 6 unique genomic regions comprising half of the 191 unique coding sequences were revealed. The majority of these regions were inserted genetic fragments, most likely derived from the closely-related Haemophilus spp. including H. aegyptius, H. haemolyticus and H. parainfluenzae. Importantly, the KR494 genome possessed several putative virulence genes that were distinct from non-type f strains. These included the sap2 operon, aef3 fimbriae, and genes for kanamycin nucleotidyltranserase, iron-utilization proteins, and putative YadA-like trimeric autotransporters that may increase the bacterial virulence. Furthermore, Hif KR494 lacked a hisABCDEFGH operon for de novo histidine biosynthesis, hmg locus for lipooligosaccharide biosynthesis and biofilm formation, the Haemophilus antibiotic resistance island and a Haemophilus secondary molybdate transport system. We confirmed the histidine auxotrophy and kanamycin resistance in Hif by functional experiments. Moreover, the pattern of unique or missing genes of Hif KR494 was similar in 20 Hif clinical isolates obtained from different years and geographical areas. A cross-species comparison revealed that the Hif genome shared more characteristics with H. aegyptius than Hid and NTHi. CONCLUSIONS The genomic comparative analyses facilitated identification of genotypic characteristics that may be related to the specific virulence of Hif. In relation to non-type f H. influenzae strains, the Hif genome contains differences in components involved in metabolism and survival that may contribute to its invasiveness.

Abstract
We aimed to characterize Haemophilus influenzae invasive isolates recovered in Portugal over a 9-year period (2002-2010) following the inclusion of H. influenzae serotype b (Hib) conjugate vaccination in the National Immunization Program (NIP) in the year 2000 and compare the results with those obtained in a similar study from the pre-vaccination era (1989-2001) previously described by us. As part of a laboratory-based passive surveillance system, 144 invasive isolates obtained in 28 Portuguese hospitals were received at the National Reference Laboratory for Bacterial Respiratory Infections and were characterized. Capsular types and antibiotic susceptibility patterns were determined. The ftsI gene encoding PBP3 was sequenced for β-lactamase-negative ampicillin-resistant (BLNAR) isolates. Genetic relatedness among isolates was examined by multilocus sequencing typing (MLST). Most isolates (77.1%) were non-capsulated, a significant increase compared to the pre-vaccination era (19.0%, p < 0.001). Serotype b strains decreased significantly (from 81.0 to 13.2%, p < 0.001) and serotype f increased significantly (from 0.8 to 6.9%, p = 0.03). Ten percent of the isolates were β-lactamase producers, a value lower than that previously observed (26.9%, p = 0.005). Eight percent of all isolates were BLNAR. A high genetic diversity among non-capsulated isolates was found. By contrast, capsulated isolates were clonal. The implementation of Hib vaccination has resulted in a significant decline in the proportion of serotype b H. influenzae invasive disease isolates. Most episodes of invasive disease occurring in Portugal are now due to fully susceptible, highly diverse, non-capsulated strains. Given the evolving dynamics of this pathogen and the increase in non-type b capsulated isolates, continuous surveillance is needed.

Haemophilus influenzae serotype f (Hif) is an etiologic agent of bacterial invasive disease. Here, we report the first annotated genome sequence of the Hif strain KR494, which was isolated from a patient suffering from sepsis and necrotizing myositis. The genome sequence will increase the understanding of Hif pathogenesis.
