Early photostimulation at the recommended body weight reduced broiler breeder performance

Effect of body weight at photostimulation on productive performance and welfare aspects of commercial layers

OBJECTIVE

Due to current selection practices for increased egg production and peak persistency, the production profile, age at maturity, and body weight criteria for commercial layers are constantly changing. Body weight and age at the time of photostimulation will thus always be the factors that need to be adequately addressed among various production systems. The current study was carried out to determine the effects of pullets' body weight (low, medium, and heavy) on their performance, welfare, physiological response, and hormonal profile.

METHODS

With regard to live weight, 150 16-week-old pullets were divided into three groups using a completely randomized design (CRD) and held until the 50th week. One-way analysis of variance was used to evaluate the data under the CRD, and the least significant difference test was used to distinguish between treatment means.

RESULTS

In comparison to the medium and light birds, the heavy birds had higher body weight at maturity, an earlier age at maturity, and higher egg weight, eggshell weight, eggshell thickness, egg yolk index, breaking strength, egg surface area, egg shape index, egg volume, and hormonal profile except corticosterone. However, the medium and light birds had lower feed consumption rates per dozen eggs and per kilogram of egg mass than the heavy birds. Light birds showed greater body weight gain, egg production, and egg specific gravity than the other categories. At 20 weeks of age, physiological response, welfare aspects, and catalase were non-significant; however, at 50 weeks of age, all these factors-aside from catalase-were extremely significant.

CONCLUSION

The findings of this study indicate that layers can function at lower body weights during photostimulation; hence, dietary regimens that result in lighter pullets may be preferable. Additionally, the welfare of the birds was not compromised by the lighter weight group.

Is relaxing broiler breeder growth restriction cost-effective?

Broiler breeders are subjected to feed restriction programs to control excessive growth. However, current levels of feed restriction and concomitant growth restriction are becoming severe, raising welfare and suboptimal reproductive performance concerns in underfed breeders. To circumvent the issue, our previous studies investigated the effects of new strategic growth curves, with various degrees of relaxed growth restrictions, on broiler breeders and their progeny's performance. The broiler breeder study was conducted with 40 Ross 708 broiler breeder pullets reared on 1 of 10 target growth trajectories using a precision feeding (PF) system. The growth trajectories were designed with 2 levels of the amount of prepubertal BW gain and 5 levels of pubertal growth timing. The prepubertal BW gain (g1) was estimated from the breeder-recommended standard BW gain (Standard g1) target, or 10% higher (High g1). The pubertal growth timing (I2) was advanced such that it happened at I2-0% = 22.29 wk, I2-5% = 21.16 wk, I2-10% = 20.05 wk, I2-15% = 18.94 wk, I2-20% = 17.82 wk of age. Two broiler experiments with different maternal ages (35 and 42 wk) were conducted as the extension of the breeder experiment to evaluate the intergenerational effects of a reduced degree of maternal prepubertal phase growth restriction and earlier maternal pubertal phase growth on offspring growth and development. The current paper investigated the economic aspects of implementing the growth curves using the partial budget analysis. Increasing prepubertal BW gain by 10% and advancing the pubertal growth phase by 20% (scenario 10) could increase margin over feed and chick cost for the hatching egg producers by CDN$1.97/hen. For broiler chicken supply chain as a whole, the highest differential margin over feed and chick cost was for maternal growth scenario 10 from 42-wk-old hens. The latter margin over feed and chick cost was greater than that of breeder-recommended maternal growth (from 35-wk-old hens) by $0.1053/kg live chicken under the current economic situation.

A Study on Egg Production and Quality According to the Age of Four Italian Chicken Dual-Purpose Purebred Hens Reared Outdoors

The month of hatching and the rearing management, especially temperature and photoperiod, are important factors for pullets and hens reared outdoors. The yield performance and egg quality of dual-purpose chicken breeds from the Veneto region (Italy), Pepoi (PP), Ermellinata di Rovigo (ER), Robusta Maculata (RM) and Robusta Lionata (RL), with different adult body weights (ABW, kg, PP = 1.3; ER = 2.3, RM and RL = 3.1), were studied, using a factorial model (4 × 2), considering breed and age (26-33 weeks, first age, summer-autumn, under decreasing natural photoperiod-on average, 12L:12D, and 42-53 weeks, second age, winter, under implemented photoperiod-14L:10D) as the main effects and interaction. The chicks hatched in spring, and they started laying at the end of summer/beginning of autumn. Significant (p < 0.05) results were shown for many traits. ER showed higher hen-day egg production than that of PP, and RM and RL were the lowest; ER, RM and RL showed medium-size eggs and PP showed small-size eggs. RM produced the most spherical eggs and ER the most ovoid, and they showed the highest and the lowest eggshell thickness, respectively. RM showed the highest yolk to albumen ratio, and RL showed the lowest. The age increased the laying rate and the egg weight in all the groups. At 26-33 weeks, ER and PP showed higher hen-day egg production (on average 24%) than RM and RL (on average, less than 10%). The onset of laying (at least 10% laying rate) was shown, at different ages, according to the % ABW the breeds had reached: PP was the first, followed by ER, then RM, and RL was the last. At 42-53 weeks, the hen-day egg production ranged, on average, from 38 to 52%, according to the breeds; orthogonal contrasts on two-weekly data showed, at first age, increasing linear (ER) and quadratic (other groups) trends, and at second age, positive linear (ER, RM) and cubic (PP, RL) trends. Age (32 vs. 53 weeks) affected almost all the eggshell traits in PP and ER, whereas in RL, and especially RM, fewer traits changed. The age increased the yolk to albumen ratio (unchanged in PP). These results may be useful for the effective management of local purebred chickens, with the purpose to ensure the wellbeing of the hens and for supplying eggs of different quality throughout the year.

Impact of growth trajectory on sexual maturation in layer chickens

Recent studies showed that apart from photostimulation, metabolic triggers may independently activate sexual maturation and egg production in chickens. However, the origin, mode of action, and specific target(s) of this metabolic control remain unknown. Beyond body weight (BW), we hypothesize that body composition (BC) and associated specific metabolic signals are involved. Thus, this study was conducted to determine the BW and BC thresholds triggering spontaneous sexual maturation in layer pullets under different growth trajectories. Day-old Lohman LSL lite and Lohman brown lite chicks (n = 210 each) raised in brooding cages under ad libitum (AL) feeding until 8 weeks of age were randomly allocated into individual cages and assigned to one of 3 experimental growth profiles; AL, breeder's target (T), restricted 20% below target (R), (n = 70 birds/profile/strain). Birds had free access to water throughout the trial. All hens were maintained on 10 h of light (10 lux) throughout the rest of the study. Blood and tissue samples were collected throughout the study to measure plasma estradiol (E₂) concentrations and organ weights, respectively. Furthermore, carcasses were subjected to Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) analyses. All analyses were completed with SAS using the MIXED procedure. Results show that R treatment slowed (p < 0.001) growth, delayed age at first egg (FE) and egg production (p < 0.001) and resulted in lower BW at FE (p < 0.001), lower ovary weight and number of follicles (p < 0.001) compared to AL in both strains, whereas, the strain significantly impacted body weight (p < 0.0001), ovary weight (p < 0.001), BW at FE (p < 0.001), age at FE (p < 0.001), egg production (p < 0.0001), E₂ (p < 0.0001) and body composition (p < 0.05). For DEXA, AL feeding (p < 0.001) increased fat deposition compared to R. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between plasma E₂ and bone mineral content (p < 0.01) and bone mineral density (p < 0.01). In conclusion, feed allocation impacted growth and BC in a strain dependent manner which resulted in differing age at sexual maturation and egg production. Furthermore, a body fat threshold between 10% to 15% appears to be required for the occurrence of spontaneously sexual maturation in laying hens.

Effect of early photostimulation at 15-weeks of age and everyday spin feeding on broiler breeder performance

To prevent broiler breeders from growing too quickly and becoming too large for optimum reproduction, their dietary intake is restricted. While current restricted feeding programs, such as skip-a-day feeding (SAD), improve the economic efficiency of broiler breeder operations, this management practice impacts bird welfare. There is an interest in finding strategies that could reduce the impact of feed restriction during broiler breeder rearing. This research investigated the effects of feeding pullets on an advanced growth curve for early photostimulation at 15 wk (15P) or standard growth curve for photostimulation at 21 wk (21P), using either an every-day-spin feeding program (EDS) or SAD feeding, on the reproductive parameters of broiler breeder hens in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Overall, advancing the growth curve (15P) decreased blood corticosterone levels compared to 21P, but EDS resulted in higher blood corticosterone levels compared to SAD. At the end of rearing in both 15P and 21P, EDS pullets weighed less than SAD pullets. The onset of egg production was 20 and 24 wk of age for the 15P and 21P hens, respectively. Despite an earlier onset, 15P hens did not produce more eggs than 21P hens through 65 wk of age. Egg weight was reduced for 15P compared to 21P until 30 wk of age. The 15P hens had a greater number of double yolk eggs than the 21P hens. Fertility and hatch were not impacted by the advanced growth curve and early photostimulation. Although the current research indicates the potential to reduce feed restriction associated welfare issues by rearing broiler breeder pullets for an earlier photostimulation onset, further research in needed to determine if this management technique can be improved to optimize hen reproductive efficiency.

Timing of growth affected broiler breeder feeding motivation and reproductive traits

The amount and timing of growth are important factors that affect age at first egg, body conformation, reproductive performance, and hunger in broiler breeders. To investigate the effect of growth pattern on feeding motivation and reproductive performance, 10 unique growth trajectories were designed with 2 levels of the amount of early growth and 5 levels of timing of growth around puberty. A 3-phase Gompertz model that described growth in phase 1 (prepubertal), phase 2 (pubertal), and phase 3 (postpubertal) was used to design the growth trajectories. Second growth phase inflection point (I₂) was advanced by 0, 5, 10, 15, or 20% of the coefficient estimated from the breeder-recommended target BW. The growth trajectories were designed with 2 discrete levels of total gain in the prepubertal phase (g₁); g₁ was either the prepubertal phase gain coefficient, estimated from the breeder-recommended BW (Standard g₁) target, or 10% higher (High g₁). Forty females were randomly assigned to the growth trajectories using a precision feeding (PF) system. Analysis of covariance was conducted on dependent variables in ten 4-wk periods with g₁ and periods as discrete fixed effects, I₂ as a continuous fixed effect, and age as a random effect. Differences were reported at P ≤ 0.05. For every week of earlier I₂, body weight at photostimulation (BWPS) increased by 126 g; BW at first egg (BWFE) increased by 94 g; 24 wk shank length increased by 0.038 and 1.495 mm in the Standard g₁ and High g₁ treatments; 24 wk body fat increased by 0.38%; pullets came to lay earlier by 0.49 d; egg weight (EW) increased by 0.27 g; egg production and egg mass (EM) increased by 0.33 egg/hen/d and 0.916 g/d in the High g₁ treatment but decreased by 0.27 egg/hen/d and 0.29 g/d in the Standard g₁ treatment, respectively. Increasing g₁ reduced feeding motivation index by 1.6 and 0.8 visits/meal during rearing and laying phase, respectively. Earlier pubertal growth showed prominent effects on the reproductive performance.

Effects of amino acid levels during rearing on Cobb 500 slow-feathering broiler breeders: 2. Reproductive performance

Crude protein and amino acid (AA) content in rearing diets affect body composition and reproductive performance. This study evaluated the effects of 4 dietary AA levels during rearing on BW, egg production and composition, fertility, hatchability, and embryo mortality up to 65 wk of age on Cobb 500 slow-feathering (SF) broiler breeders. The treatments consisted in 80% (low-AA), 90% (moderate-AA), 100% (standard-AA), and 110% (high-AA) of the AA recommendations for Cobb 500 SF pullets from 5 to 24 wk. AA was guided by an ideal protein profile based on digestible Lys. A total of 1,360 pullets and 288 Cobb MV cockerels were randomly placed in 16 pullets and 16 cockerel floor-pens. At 22 wk, 1,040 females and 112 males were transferred into 16-floor pens in a laying house. BW increased linearly (P < 0.01) as AA augmented at 25, 36, and 40 wk. No effects (P > 0.05) at the onset of lay were observed. Moderate-AA and standard-AA resulted in the best hen-housed egg production (HHEP) at 65 wk with 174.3 and 176.5 eggs, respectively. The optimum level of AA for HHEP at 65 wk was estimated (P < 0.001) in 96.7% and 94.7% by the quadratic and broken line models, respectively. Overall, the lightest egg weight (P = 0.022) was obtained with 89%AA during rearing, and the heaviest eggs (P < 0.001) were found at 54 wk. Response surface regression indicated linear effects on albumen and yolk percentages (P < 0.01) increasing and decreasing, respectively, as AA levels augmented; consequently, AA had a negative linear effect on Y:A ratio (P = 0.004) with quadratic effects (P < 0.01) of age (R² = 0.92). No statistical effect of treatments was observed in fertility (P > 0.05), but AA had a quadratic effect (P = 0.046) on hatchability up to 50 wk of age with 97% as optimum, and decreased linearly (P = 0.004) from 51 to 65 wk. A few effects of treatments (P < 0.05) on embryo mortality were observed. In conclusion, AA levels during rearing affect broiler breeder reproductive performance.

Intergenerational effects of maternal growth strategies in broiler breeders

Maternal growth patterns affect broiler growth performance. The current study investigated the impact of lesser growth restriction, compared to the breeder-recommended target growth, during the prepubertal growth phase and earlier pubertal growth in breeders on their offspring growth and carcass traits. In a randomized controlled trial, a total of 40 female broiler breeders were randomly assigned to 10 unique growth trajectories with 2 levels of maternal BW gain (MW) in prepubertal phase and 5 levels of maternal pubertal growth inflection (MI) for each level of the MW. Growth parameters (MW and MI) were estimated by fitting a 3-phase Gompertz model to the breeder-recommended BW target (Standard MW; SMW), or 10% higher (HMW). Maternal pubertal inflection was advanced by 0, 5, 10, 15, or 20% in both SMW and HMW groups. Maternal growth trajectories were implemented from 0 to 42 wk of age using a precision feeding (PF) system. The current study consisted of two cohorts that varied in maternal age (MA) of 35 and 42 wk. The broiler chicks were fed to 35 d of age, also with the PF system. Analysis of covariance was conducted on all dependent variables (BW, FCR, carcass traits) with MA, MW, and offspring sex as categorical variables and MI as a continuous predictor variable. Chicks from 42 wk old hens had higher 0 (hatch), 14, 21, and 28 d BW, liver, and heart weight, and lower FCR from 7 to 35 d of age than those from the 35 wk old hens. Compared to SMW hens, HMW hens produced female offspring with lower FCR, and male offspring with heavier gut weight. Advancing MI increased hatch BW in both sexes and 35 d BW in male broilers. For every week that the MI was advanced, hatch BW increased by 0.26 g in females and 0.39 g in males; however, 21 and 35 d BW decreased by 6.85 and 17.29 g/wk in females and increased by 10.53 and 25.94 g/wk in males, respectively. Overall, a lesser degree of growth restriction during prepubertal and earlier pubertal growth increased male offspring growth.

Effects of age at photostimulation on sexual maturity and reproductive performance in rooster breeders

The 2 × 4 factorial experiment was designed to determine the effect of strain and photostimulation age on sexual maturity and reproductive performance of rooster breeders. A total of 96 White Leghorn (WL) and 120 Beijing You Chicken (BYC) roosters were randomly allocated to 4 treatments at 14 wk of age. The treatments represent photostimulation at 16, 18, 20, and 22 wk of age, respectively (PS16, PS18, PS20, and PS22), in both strains. Photostimulation was achieved by increasing the day length from 8L:16D to 14L:10D and by increasing lighting intensity from 10 lx to 80 lx. Three birds from each interaction were sacrificed to characterize the comb and testis weights at 4 time points: 1 d before photostimulation and 2, 4, and 6 wk after photostimulation. Semen quality and hatching performance with the semen of the experimental roosters were measured at 30 and 45 wk of age, respectively. Results showed that the testis weight of PS20 and PS22 in WL and BYC was 6.4- and 2.9-fold higher than that of PS18 before photostimulation, while testis weight of PS18 in both strains increased sharply after photostimulation. The diameter of seminiferous tubules increased in the photostimulated roosters as compared with the nonphotostimulated ones, and mature spermatozoa were produced 4 wk after photostimulation and at 20 wk of age for PS16. The WL had lower semen volume and total sperm count than BYC (P < 0.01), but there was no difference on effective sperm count (P > 0.05). In addition, semen quality traits were not affected by age at photostimulation (P > 0.05) in both strains. The fertility and hatching performance were not affected by strain or photostimulation age (P > 0.05). In summary, the sexual maturation of rooster breeders can be advanced by photostimulation at an early age, which does not lead to a difference in semen quality or hatching performance at adult stage.

Gonadotropin Inhibitory Hormone and Its Receptor: Potential Key to the Integration and Coordination of Metabolic Status and Reproduction

Since its discovery as a novel gonadotropin inhibitory peptide in 2000, the central and peripheral roles played by gonadotropin-inhibiting hormone (GnIH) have been significantly expanded. This is highlighted by the wide distribution of its receptor (GnIH-R) within the brain and throughout multiple peripheral organs and tissues. Furthermore, as GnIH is part of the wider RF-amide peptides family, many orthologues have been characterized across vertebrate species, and due to the promiscuity between ligands and receptors within this family, confusion over the nomenclature and function has arisen. In this review, we intend to first clarify the nomenclature, prevalence, and distribution of the GnIH-Rs, and by reviewing specific localization and ligand availability, we propose an integrative role for GnIH in the coordination of reproductive and metabolic processes. Specifically, we propose that GnIH participates in the central regulation of feed intake while modulating the impact of thyroid hormones and the stress axis to allow active reproduction to proceed depending on the availability of resources. Furthermore, beyond the central nervous system, we also propose a peripheral role for GnIH in the control of glucose and lipid metabolism at the level of the liver, pancreas, and adipose tissue. Taken together, evidence from the literature strongly suggests that, in fact, the inhibitory effect of GnIH on the reproductive axis is based on the integration of environmental cues and internal metabolic status.

Feeding, feed-seeking behavior, and reproductive performance of broiler breeders under conditions of relaxed feed restriction

Broiler breeders are feed restricted to optimize reproductive performance. A randomized controlled study was conducted to investigate the effect of increasing female broiler breeder BW on feeding, feed-seeking behavior, and reproductive performance. It was hypothesized that a greater BW would decrease feeding and feed-seeking behavior, and reduce reproductive performance. Ross 708 female broiler breeders (n = 36) were fed using a precision feeding system from 2 to 42 wk of age. Ten BW trajectories were created from a multiphasic Gompertz growth model that increased growth from 0 to 22.5% in the prepubertal and pubertal phases of growth, in 2.5% increments. Six unrestricted birds were not limited to a maximum BW. Body weight was evaluated as a 2-way ANOVA. Two linear regression analyses were conducted, one which included all birds and one which excluded the unrestricted birds. For the regression analyses, BW at photostimulation (22 wk of age) was used as the continuous independent variable to represent the degree of variation between trajectories. Differences were reported at P ≤ 0.05. Body weight increased as trajectory-specific BW targets increased from 6 to 28 wk of age. Differences of BW between BW trajectories decreased during the laying period, which was a result of individual bird variation within BW trajectories. Station visit frequency decreased per kilogram increase in BW for all birds during rearing and lay, and within feed-restricted birds during lay only. The number of meals and ADFI increased with age, which reflected nutrient intake to support maintenance, growth, and reproductive requirements. Mean egg weight (EW) of all birds increased by 0.72 g per kilogram increase in BW from 22 to 41 wk of age. From 22 to 29 wk of age, mean EW of feed-restricted birds increased by 2.78 g per kilogram increase in BW. For every kilogram increase in BW, age at first egg comparing all birds decreased by 10.83 d. Two unrestricted birds came into lay before photostimulation. In contrast with the hypotheses, BW increased up to 22.5% above the recommended target did not reduce feeding and feed seeking behavior, or negatively impact reproductive performance.

Multiphasic poultry growth models: method and application

Growth and development are complex phenomena. To date, most growth modeling research has focused on a single growth phase, which is sufficient and useful for describing ad libitum fed animals processed at a prepubertal age, such as broilers or turkeys produced for meat. However, multiphase growth models are necessary to describe and predict growth and further to hypothesize about optimizing growth of reproducing animals such as broiler breeder hens. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to develop and evaluate multiphasic models to describe the growth of various types of poultry raised to reproductive age. Coefficients for monophasic, diphasic, and triphasic Gompertz model forms were estimated using a variety of BW trajectories published by primary breeders. The fit of these models was evaluated for a representative laying line hen, broiler breeder hen and rooster, and turkey hen. The coefficient of determination (R²), root mean square error, and the Bayesian information criterion were used to evaluate the fit of each model. The diphasic model was found to be the best fit for the turkey hen, while the triphasic model was the most suitable model for all the chicken lines studied. Hypotheses can be formulated based on any of the continuous model parameters, and the resulting BW trajectories can be implemented and evaluated in a systematic way. The biological relevance of the continuous parameters in multiphasic Gompertz models provides an opportunity to implement a robust hypothesis-based approach for future optimization of growth curves.

Should I Lay or Should I Grow: Photoperiodic Versus Metabolic Cues in Chickens

While photoperiod has been generally accepted as the primary if not the exclusive cue to stimulate reproduction in photoperiodic breeders such as the laying hen, current knowledge suggests that metabolism, and/or body composition can also play an influential role to control the hypothalamic-pituitary gonadal (HPG)-axis. This review thus intends to first describe how photoperiodic and metabolic cues can impact the HPG axis, then explore and propose potential common pathways and mechanisms through which both cues could be integrated. Photostimulation refers to a perceived increase in day-length resulting in the stimulation of the HPG. While photoreceptors are present in the retina of the eye and the pineal gland, it is the deep brain photoreceptors (DBPs) located in the hypothalamus that have been identified as the potential mediators of photostimulation, including melanopsin (OPN4), neuropsin (OPN5), and vertebrate-ancient opsin (VA-Opsin). Here, we present the current state of knowledge surrounding these DBPs, along with their individual and relative importance and, their possible downstream mechanisms of action to initiate the activation of the HPG axis. On the metabolic side, specific attention is placed on the hypothalamic integration of appetite control with the stimulatory (Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone; GnRH) and inhibitory (Gonadotropin Inhibitory Hormone; GnIH) neuropeptides involved in the control of the HPG axis. Specifically, the impact of orexigenic peptides agouti-related peptide (AgRP), and neuropeptide Y (NPY), as well as the anorexigenic peptides pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC), and cocaine-and amphetamine regulated transcript (CART) is reviewed. Furthermore, beyond hypothalamic control, several metabolic factors involved in the control of body weight and composition are also presented as possible modulators of reproduction at all three levels of the HPG axis. These include peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) for its impact in liver metabolism during the switch from growth to reproduction, adiponectin as a potential modulator of ovarian development and follicular maturation, as well as growth hormone (GH), and leptin (LEP).

Energy partitioning by broiler breeder hens in conventional daily-restricted feeding and precision feeding systems

An empirical linear mixed model was derived to describe metabolizable energy (ME) partitioning in broiler breeder hens. Its coefficients described ME used for total heat production (HP), growth (ADG), and egg mass (EM). A total of 480 Ross 308 hens were randomly and equally assigned to 2 treatments: precision feeding (PF) and conventional daily-restricted feeding (CON) from 23 to 34 wk of age. The PF system allowed birds to enter feeding stations voluntarily at any time, weighed them, and provided access to feed for 60 s if their BW was less than the breeder-recommended target BW. The CON birds were fed daily each morning. Energetic efficiency of hens was evaluated using residual feed intake (RFI), defined as the difference between observed and predicted ME intake (MEI). The energy partitioning model predicted (P < 0.05): MEI = A × BW0.67 + 1.75 × ADG + 0.75 × EM + ϵ. The coefficient A, a vector of age-specific HP, was 142 kcal/kg0.67/d; the energy requirement for growth and EM was 1.75 and 0.75 kcal/g, respectively. For the CON and the PF hens, respectively, MEI was 366 and 354 kcal/d (P = 0.006); RFI was -5.9 and 6.7 kcal/d (P = 0.009); HP% was 85.5 and 87.7 (P < 0.001); hen-day egg production (HDEP) was 65.5 and 55.2% (P < 0.001). Although the CON hens had higher MEI, the model predicted lower HP%; thus, CON hens had more nutrients available for egg production, increased egg production, and were more energetically efficient than the PF hens. The decreased egg production by the PF hens was likely due to these hens receiving production-related feed increases after an egg was laid. However, feed allocation increases for the CON hens resulted in increasing MEI for all CON hens at the same time. Therefore, the PF hens had lower MEI and lower HDEP than the CON hens.

Diurnal rhythms of group-housed layer pullets with free choices between light and dim environments

Chickens under appropriate light–dark programs can develop diurnal rhythms. However, actual needs of layer pullets for the light and dark environments are not fully understood. This study was to investigate the diurnal rhythms of pullets in the light (30 lx) and dim (<1 lx) environments. The preferences of pullets on the light and dim environments were examined. The testing system contained four identical compartments (0.96 m length × 1.20 m width × 2.00 m height for each). A light-emitting diode tube, a camera, and weighing sensors were installed in each compartment. Four groups of eight Chinese domestic layer pullets, Jingfen, were used at the weeks 15–18. Choices of environments and feeding behaviors were monitored by weighing sensors, and activity was measured by digital image processing. The results show that pullets spent on average 35.5 ± 2.2 min under the light and 24.5 ± 2.1 min under the dim in each hour. Human inspection can stimulate bird feeding and activity. Overall, pullets behaved more actively under the light than under the dim environment. Pullets stayed in the light and dim environments throughout each hour of a day, which may suggest that lighting environments with free choices in a pullet house might better serve for pullet preference.

Post-photostimulation energy intake accelerated pubertal development in broiler breeder pullets

The effect of ME intake (MEI) on the reproductive system was evaluated. Ross 308 broiler breeder pullets (n = 140) were assigned to 2 treatments from 22 to 26 wk of age: (1) Low-energy diet fed restricted (2,807 kcal/kg, low MEI) and (2) high-energy diet fed unrestricted (3,109 kcal/kg, high MEI). Daylength was increased from 8 to 14 h at 22 wk of age with a light intensity of 30 lux. Daily palpation was used to detect sexual maturity via the presence of a hard-shelled egg in the shell gland. Expression of gonadotropin releasing hormone-I (GnRH) and gonadotropin inhibitory hormone (GnIH) genes in the hypothalamus and GnRH receptor (GnRH-RI) and GnIH receptor (GnIH-R) genes in the anterior pituitary gland of each pullet was evaluated from 22 to 26 wk of age using quantitative real time-PCR. Blood samples were taken weekly and luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating-hormone (FSH), and 17-beta-estradiol (E2) determined using commercial ELISA kits. Carcass samples were used for determination of CP and fat content. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure in SAS, and differences were reported where P ≤ 0.05. High MEI treatment pullets had 2.3-fold higher GnRH and 1.8-fold higher GnRH-RI mRNA levels than low MEI pullets. MEI affected neither expression of GnIH and GnIH-R nor carcass protein content. For high MEI (489 kcal/D) and low MEI treatments (258 kcal/D), respectively, from 22 to 26 wk of age (P ≤ 0.05), LH concentration was 3.05 and 1.60 ng/mL; FSH concentration was 145 and 89.3 pg/mL; E2 concentration was 429 and 266 pg/mL, and carcass lipid was 13.9 and 10.3%. The onset of lay for pullets in the high MEI treatment advanced such that 100% had laid by 26 wk of age compared with 30% in the low MEI treatment. We concluded that higher MEI advanced the activation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis and also increased body lipid deposition, and moreover, stimulated reproductive hormone levels which overall accelerated puberty in broiler breeder pullets.

Effect of age at photostimulation on sexual maturation and egg-laying performance of layer breeders

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of age at photostimulation on sexual maturity and performance of layer breeders. A total of 192 fourteen-wk-old White Leghorn (WL) breeder hens were randomly allocated to 4 treatments of 48 birds each, with 2 replicates per treatment. The birds were photostimulated at 16 (PS16), 18 (PS18), 20 (PS20), and 22 (PS22) wk of age. Four birds per treatment were randomly selected to evaluate sexual organ development at 1 D before photostimulation and 2, 4, and 6 wk after photostimulation. The ovary weight, large yellow follicles number (LYF), oviduct weight, and oviduct length of PS18 increased sharply after photostimulation. Conversely, the increase in PS16 was not observed until 2 wk after photostimulation. There was no difference in age at sexual maturity between treatments (P > 0.05). The PS16 had the longest interval (28 D) from photostimulation to 5% egg production, while PS22 reached 5% egg production 7 D before photostimulation. The PS22 had lower peak production (P = 0.02) and less egg production (P = 0.02) than other treatments. The PS16 had more broken and abnormal eggs (P = 0.01) and lower hatchability (P = 0.04) than other treatments. In conclusion, photostimulation at 16 and 22 wk of age decreases hatchability and egg production, respectively, and photostimulation at 18 wk is appreciated for the WL breeder hens.

Reproductive management of poultry

Based on data from the UN's Food and Agricultural Organization, about 120 million metric tons of poultry meat were produced globally in 2016. In addition, about 82 million metric tons of eggs were produced. One of the bases for this production is the reproductive efficiency of today's poultry. This, in turn, is due to their inherent reproductive physiology, intensive genetic selection and advances in husbandry/management. The system of reproduction in males in largely similar to that in mammals except that there is no descent of testes. In females, there are marked differences with there being a single ovary and oviduct; the latter being the name of the differentiated entire Müllerian duct. Moreover, females produce eggs with a yolky oocyte surrounded by albumen, membranes and shell. Among the most successful reproductive management techniques are optimizing photoperiod, light intensity and nutrition. Widespread employment of these has allowed maximizing production. Laying hens can be re-cycled toward the end egg production. Other aspects of reproductive management in poultry include the following: artificial insemination (almost exclusively employed in turkeys) and approaches to reduce broodiness together with cage free (colony), conventional, enriched and free-range systems.

Lifetime productivity of conventionally and precision-fed broiler breeders

A precision feeding (PF) system was developed to increase broiler breeder lifetime reproductive performance through improved flock uniformity. The current study consisted of 2 rearing and 3 laying treatments. From 0 to 22 wk of age, 480 Cobb male grandparent line pullets and 80 Cobb MX males were fed once daily as a group (CON), or individually with a PF system. Pullets were housed in 6 replicate pens of 40 birds, and cockerels in one pen per treatment. During lay, CON and PF treatments continued, and a third treatment was added, where PF-reared birds were transitioned to conventional feeding (PFCON; n = 3 pens). At photostimulation (22 wk of age), all pens had 24 hens and 2 roosters. Birds were allowed to mate naturally to 52 wk. Analysis of variance was conducted, and Tukey-adjusted means were reported as different where P ≤ 0.05. Mean BW was near the target BW in all treatments. At photostimulation, PF pullet BW CV was 2% vs 14% in CON pullets. Cumulative feed conversion ratio during rearing was lower in PF treatment pullets, which ate 3% less than CON pullets. Pullets in the PF treatment received 10 meals spread throughout each day, compared with one meal per day in the CON treatment. Increased feeding frequency would reduce diurnal fluctuations in nutrient supply, which may explain why PF pullets had 1.2 times the breast muscle weight of CON pullets at 22 wk. There was no treatment difference in abdominal fatpad weight at 22 wk. The PF treatment had 3.8% higher fertility and 1.3% lower egg weight CV compared with the CON treatment. Egg production in PF and PFCON treatments was 0.73 and 0.89 times that of the CON treatment, respectively. It is hypothesized that metabolic changes in PF pullets provided an insufficient metabolic trigger for sexual maturation. It follows that relaxing feed restriction may increase fat deposition and egg production in PF broiler breeders.
