Global Research Trends of Ferroptosis: A Rapidly Evolving Field With Enormous Potential

Clostridium butyricum regulates intestinal barrier function via trek1 to improve behavioral abnormalities in mice with autism spectrum disorder

BACKGROUND

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that has been found to be associated with dysregulation of gastrointestinal functions and gut microbial homeostasis (the so-called "gut-brain axis"). ASD is often accompanied by poor performances in social interaction and repetitive behaviors. Studies on the gut-brain axis provide novel insights and candidate targets for ASD therapeutics and diagnosis. Based on the ASD mice model, this work aims to reveal the mechanisms behind the interaction of intestinal barrier function and probiotics in ASD mouse models.

RESULTS

We found an altered intestinal barrier in both BTBR T+ Itpr3tf/J (BTBR) and valproic acid (VPA) mice, including increased intestinal permeability, decreased expression of intestinal tight junction proteins (claudin1, claudin3, and occludin), and increased levels of IL-6, TNF-α, and IFN-γ. Based on intestinal microbial alternation, C. butyricum can drive reduced expression of histone deacetylases 1 (HDAC1) and enhanced intestinal barrier function, significantly promoting behavioral abnormalities of ASD in BTBR mice. In parallel, we confirmed that C. butyricum was involved in the regulation of intestinal function by the Trek1 channel, indicating that it is a target of C. butyricum/butyric acid to improve intestinal barrier function in ASD mice.

CONCLUSIONS

Our finding provides solid evidence for the gut microbiota involved in ASD through the brain-gut axis. In addition, the probiotics C. butyricum hold promise to improve gut health and ameliorate behavioral abnormalities associated with ASD.

Exploring the potential of thiophene derivatives as dual inhibitors of β-tubulin and Wnt/β-catenin pathways for gastrointestinal cancers in vitro

Background

Gastrointestinal cancer poses a considerable global health risk, encompassing a heterogeneous spectrum of malignancies that afflict the gastrointestinal tract. It is significant to develop efficacious therapeutic agents, as they are indispensable for both the treatment and prevention of this formidable disease.

Methods

In this study, we synthesized a novel thiophene derivative, designated as compound 1312. An assessment was performed to investigate its anti-proliferative activity in several cancer cell lines (GES-1, EC9706, SGC7901, and HT-29). Furthermore, we performed molecular biology techniques to investigate the inhibitory impact of compound 1312 on gastrointestinal cell lines SGC-7901 and HT-29.

Results

Our findings reveal that compound 1312 exhibits significant efficacy in suppressing colony formation of cancer cells. Notably, it triggers cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase in gastrointestinal cell lines SGC7901 and HT-29. Compound 1312 was confirmed to exert inhibitory effects on cell migration and invasion in SGC7901. Additionally, the compound elicits apoptotic cell death through the activation of the DNA repair enzyme poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) and the caspase signaling cascade. Furthermore, in vitro experiments revealed that compound 1312 effectively suppresses both the β-tubulin cytoskeletal network and the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. These multifaceted anti-cancer activities highlight the potential of compound 1312 as a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies.

Conclusion

This study indicates the promising potential of compound 1312 as a prospective candidate agent for gastrointestinal cancer treatment. Further comprehensive investigations are needed to explore its therapeutic efficacy in greater detail.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Clear Aligner Treatment (CAT) From 2003 to 2023

Clear aligner treatment (CAT) has been evolving over the past two decades. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive and up-to-date bibliometric analysis of publications related to CAT, presenting the research trends, landscapes, and hot spots in this field. All publications were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection from 2003 to 2023. In addition to a general analysis of research landscapes, the following items were analyzed, i.e., countries, institutions, authors, journals, publications, and keywords. A total of 1031 relevant publications were included in this study. From 2003 to the present, the number of publications and citations in this field showed an increasing trend. Italy led in terms of publication counts, and Sichuan University in China had the highest publication counts among institutions. In total, 33 scholars had published a minimum of 10 articles, and the collaborations among them were mostly within each country. The American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics published the most relevant publications. "Predictability of tooth movements," "influencing factors for clinical efficacy," "biomechanics," and "patients' perception and periodontal health" stood out as the core research focus on CAT. Our study identified the most influential countries, institutions and authors, and their cooperative relationships, and detected hot research topics on CAT, calling for more high-quality international collaborative research in the future.

A bibliometric analysis of miRNAs in rheumatoid arthritis from 2001 to 2022: Research hotspots and trends

BACKGROUND

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are widely recognized in the pathogenesis of autoimmune disease. As a key regulatory factor, miRNAs have introduced new biomarkers for the early diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and provided a favorable research direction for the development of novel therapeutic targets. This study aimed to explore the hotspots of miRNA research related to RA published from different countries, organizations, and authors.

METHODS

From 2001 to 2022, publications on miRNA related to RA were identified in the Web of Science database. The total and annual number of publishments, citations, impact factor, H-index, productive authors, and involved journals were collected for quantitative and qualitative comparisons.

RESULTS

A total of 29 countries/regions in the world have participated in the research of miRNAs and RA over the past two decades, and China (760, 53.18%) and the United States (233, 16.31%) account for the majority of the total publications. China dominated in total citation (17881) and H-index (62). A total of 507 academic journals have published articles in related fields, and Frontiers in Immunology published the most (53, 3.71%). Chih-hsin Tang of the China Medical University has published the most papers (16, 1.2%). Stanczyk (2008) published the most cited article Altered expression of miRNAs in synovial fibroblasts and synovial tissue in rheumatoid arthritis in Arthritis and Rheumatism, with 660 citations. Inflammation is the high-frequency keyword outside of RA and miRNAs, and related researches have mainly focused on miR-146a and miR-155.

CONCLUSIONS

In the past two decades, extensive and continuous research has been conducted to investigate the role of miRNAs in RA, and miRNAs are widely recognized in the pathogenesis of RA. Related research has mainly focused on miR-146a and miR-155 that have shown promising results as key factors in RA experimental models. Focusing on clinical applications and translational research may be the future research direction and hotspot based on molecular biology basic research and mechanism exploration.

Visualization of the relationship between macrophage and wound healing from the perspective of bibliometric analysis

Macrophages play a crucial role in aiding all phases of the wound-healing process and has garnered increasing attention recently. Although a substantial body of related studies has been published, there remains a lack of comprehensive bibliometric analysis. In this study, we collected 4296 papers from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Three tools including CiteSpace, VOSviewer and one online analytical platform were employed to conduct bibliometric analysis and data visualization. Our results revealed that the annual number of publications related to macrophage and wound healing has increased exponentially with the year. The United States and China stand as the primary driving forces within this field, collectively constituting 58.2% of the total publication output. The application of biomaterials was one of the most concerned research areas in this field. According to references analysis, the current research focus has shifted to diabetic wound healing and regulating macrophage polarization. Based on the keywords analysis, we identified the following research frontiers in the future: exosomes and other extracellular vesicles; bio-derived materials and drug delivery methods such as nanoparticles, scaffolds and hydrogels; immunomodulation and macrophage polarization in the M2-state; chronic wounds, particularly those associated with diabetes; antimicrobial peptides; and antioxidant. Additionally, TNF, IL-6, IL-10, TGF-β1 and VEGF ranked as the five genes that have garnered the most research attention in the intersection of macrophage and wound healing. All in all, our findings offered researchers a holistic view of the ongoing progress in the field of macrophages and wound healing, serving as a valuable reference for scholars and policymakers in this domain.

Ferroptosis regulation through Nrf2 and implications for neurodegenerative diseases

This article provides an overview of the background knowledge of ferroptosis in the nervous system, as well as the key role of nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) in regulating ferroptosis. The article takes Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), Huntington's disease (HD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) as the starting point to explore the close association between Nrf2 and ferroptosis, which is of clear and significant importance for understanding the mechanism of neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) based on oxidative stress (OS). Accumulating evidence links ferroptosis to the pathogenesis of NDs. As the disease progresses, damage to the antioxidant system, excessive OS, and altered Nrf2 expression levels, especially the inhibition of ferroptosis by lipid peroxidation inhibitors and adaptive enhancement of Nrf2 signaling, demonstrate the potential clinical significance of Nrf2 in detecting and identifying ferroptosis, as well as targeted therapy for neuronal loss and mitochondrial dysfunction. These findings provide new insights and possibilities for the treatment and prevention of NDs.

Twenty years of research on borderline personality disorder: a scientometric analysis of hotspots, bursts, and research trends

Borderline personality disorder (BPD), a complex and severe psychiatric disorder, has become a topic of considerable interest to current researchers due to its high incidence and severity of consequences. There is a lack of a bibliometric analysis to visualize the history and developmental trends of researches in BPD. We retrieved 7919 relevant publications on the Web of Science platform and analyzed them using software CiteSpace (6.2.R4). The results showed that there has been an overall upward trend in research interest in BPD over the past two decades. Current research trends in BPD include neuroimaging, biological mechanisms, and cognitive, behavioral, and pathological studies. Recent trends have been identified as "prevention and early intervention", "non-pharmacological treatment" and "pathogenesis". The results are like a reference program that will help determine future research directions and priorities.

A bibliometric and visual analysis of the use of ustekinumab in Crohn's disease using CiteSpace

Background: The novel biologic agent ustekinumab (UST), a monoclonal antibody against the p40 subunit of interleukin-12 and interleukin-23, has been applied in the treatment of Crohn's disease (CD). With the development of relevant research, the clinical treatment and favorable prognosis of UST in CD have garnered considerable attention. However, there is a lack of reports that present the current status of UST-related studies in a comprehensive and objective manner. Consequently, this study aims to visually analyze the current status and clinical trends of UST-related research, identify leading researchers, and recognize deficiencies using bibliometrics and knowledge mapping, which might assist in understanding future research priorities in that specific field. Methods: Published articles containing the use of UST in CD were retrieved from the Web of Science core collection database between 2008 and 2022. Then, the bibliometric analysis was performed, and a knowledge map was generated and visualized using the CiteSpace software. Results: A total of 479 articles published between 2008 and 2022 were included in the bibliometric analysis. These publications were authored by 185 scholars from 51 countries or regions, among which the United States (38.3%), Canada (16.9%) and England (10.0%) were predominant in publishing. The keyword analysis indicated that UST has long been a popular biologic agent, and its clinical efficacy, safety, and indication for vulnerable populations in CD are popular research topics. The phrase "fecal calprotectin," a biomarker reflecting the degree of disease activity and monitoring the therapeutic response, began to gain traction in 2020 and has continued to this day. Looking for UST-related biomarkers was gaining clinical attention. Conclusion: The number of clinical studies involving the outcome of UST treatment in CD patients has increased, with the current research focusing on efficacy, safety, indications for vulnerable populations, therapeutic drug monitoring, and biomarkers. As an alternative drug after the failure of traditional immunosuppressive therapies or TNF-α antagonist therapy, UST is an effective and safe therapy in real-world refractory CD patients. UST will remain an active candidate for research in the treatment of CD.

Global trends and hotspots in IgA nephropathy: a bibliometric analysis and knowledge map visualization from 2012 to 2023

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to investigate the distribution patterns and research frontiers of international literature and thus present a holistic bibliometric evaluation of the studies on IgA nephropathy.

METHODS

The Web of Science Core Collection database was searched for studies of IgA nephropathy from January 2012 to March 2023. The keywords and references are analyzed by CiteSpace, while the countries and institutions are analyzed by VOSviewer.

RESULTS

A total of 2987 publications on IgA nephropathy were included. The country with the most publications was China (n = 1299), and the institution with the most publications was Peking University (n = 139). The most frequent keywords were IgA nephropathy (n = 2013), Oxford classification (n = 482), and diseases (n = 433). The keywords that continue to burst out at high intensity are multicenter study and gut microbiota. Moreover, the top five references for burst strength were also listed.

CONCLUSIONS

IgA nephropathy has attracted widespread research interest, particularly in high-prevalence areas. From 2012 to 2023, publications on IgA nephropathy show a linear increase. China is the country with the highest number of publications and Peking University is the institution with the highest number of publications. Current research hotspots and frontiers are mainly multicenter studies related to IgA nephropathy and its exploration with gut microbiota. Overall, we have provided a comprehensive scientometric analysis of IgA nephropathy that will inform researchers and healthcare practitioners.

The top 100 most-cited studies on monkeypox: a brief bibliometric analysis

Background

A plethora of monkeypox papers have been published; however, pinpointing key and pivotal studies can be challenging amongst the ever-expanding literature. Bibliometric analyses are helpful in identifying the most influential articles and their impact pertinent to this field, which has helped mould the recognition and management of monkeypox.

Methods

The Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) was searched on 27 October 2022. The top 100 most-cited articles on monkeypox were identified and evaluated by author, country, institution, type of articles, theme, journal of publication, keywords, and citations.

Results

The top 100 most-cited studies were published between 1997 and 2022, and the 5-year period with the largest number of articles was 2007-2011. The median number of citations among the top 100 most-cited articles was 78.23. Of the top 100 most-cited studies, 91 were original articles, and nine were reviews, the median of annual citations was significantly higher in the review group than the original group, 7.86 (4.20-13.80) versus 4.50 (3.07-7.59; P=0.023). The 100 articles were classified into different research theme, with the top three being Immunology (31%), Infectious Diseases (30%), and Virology (26%), respectively. The keywords with the highest co-occurrence frequency were "monkeypox", "smallpox," and "smallpox virus." The largest number of articles in the top 100 were published in Emerging Infectious Diseases (n=13), followed by Journal of Virology (n=11), Journal of Infectious Diseases (n=5), and PLoS One (n=5). The authors identified 711 different authors from 195 institutions and 28 countries in the top 100 most-cited articles, with the majority based in the USA.

Conclusion

The top 100 most-cited studies provide an important insight into the historical developments of monkeypox. The authors should strengthen the recognition and management of monkeypox worldwide and strengthen research cooperation among scholars in order to better respond to the ongoing or future outbreak.

The development of necroptosis: what we can learn

Necroptosis is a new type of programmed cell death discovered in recent years, playing an important role in various diseases. Since it was conceptualized in 2005, research on necroptosis has developed rapidly. However, few bibliometric analyses have provided a comprehensive overview of the field. This study aimed to employ a bibliometric analysis to assess necroptosis research's current status and hotspot, highlight landmark findings, and orientate future research. A total of 3993 publications from the WoSCC were collected for this study. Multiple tools were used for bibliometric analysis and data visualization, including an online website, VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and HistCite. Publications related to necroptosis have increased significantly annually, especially in the last 5 years. Globally, the USA and Harvard University are the most outstanding countries and institutions in this field, respectively. The academic groups managed by Peter Vandenabeele and Junying Yuan both have permanent and intensive research on necroptosis. Cell Death and Differentiation is the most vital journal in this field. The molecular mechanisms of necroptosis and its role in disease are the focus of current research, while the crosstalk between programmed cell death is an emerging direction in the field. The "reactive oxygen species", "innate immunity", and "programmed cell death" may be potential research hotspots. Our results present a comprehensive knowledge map and explore research trends. Researchers and funding agencies on necroptosis can obtain helpful references from our study.

Effects of Insulin on Proliferation, Apoptosis, and Ferroptosis in Primordial Germ Cells via PI3K-AKT-mTOR Signaling Pathway

Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are essential for the genetic modification, resource conservation, and recovery of endangered breeds in chickens and need to remain viable and proliferative in vitro. Therefore, there is an urgent need to elucidate the functions of the influencing factors and their regulatory mechanisms. In this study, PGCs collected from Rugao yellow chicken embryonic eggs at Day 5.5 were cultured in media containing 0, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 μg/mL insulin. The results showed that insulin regulates cell proliferation in PGCs in a dose-dependent way, with an optimal dose of 10 μg/mL. Insulin mediates the mRNA expression of cell cycle-, apoptosis-, and ferroptosis-related genes. Insulin at 50 μg/mL and 100 μg/mL slowed down the proliferation with elevated ion content and GSH/oxidized glutathione (GSSG) in PGCs compared to 10 μg/mL. In addition, insulin activates the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway dose dependently. Collectively, this study demonstrates that insulin reduces apoptosis and ferroptosis and enhances cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner via the PI3K-AKT-mTOR signaling pathway in PGCs, providing a new addition to the theory of the regulatory role of the growth and proliferation of PGC in vitro cultures.

CDKN2A was a cuproptosis-related gene in regulating chemotherapy resistance by the MAGE-A family in breast cancer: based on artificial intelligence (AI)-constructed pan-cancer risk model

BACKGROUND

Before the discovery of cuproptosis, copper-loaded nanoparticle is a wildly applied strategy for enhancing the tumor-cell-killing effect of chemotherapy. Although copper(ii)-related researches are wide, details of cuproptosis-related bioprocess in pan-cancer are not clear yet now, especially for prognosis and drug sensitivity prediction yet now.

METHODS

In this study, VOSviewer is used for the literature review, and R4.2.0 is used for data analysis. Public data are collected from TCGA and GEO, local breast cancer cohort is collected to verify the expression level of CDKN2A.

RESULTS

7036 published articles exhibited a time-dependent linear relationship (R=0.9781, p<0.0001), and breast cancer (33.4%) is the most researched topic. Cuproptosis-related-genes (CRGs)-based unsupervised clustering divides pan-cancer subgroups into four groups (CRG subgroup) with differences in prognosis and tumor immunity. 44 tumor-driver-genes (TDGs)-based prediction model of drug sensitivity and prognosis is constructed by artificial intelligence (AI). Based on TDGs and clinical features, a nomogram is (C- index: 0.7, p= 6.958e- 12) constructed to predict the prognosis of breast cancer. Importance analysis identifies CDKN2A has a pivotal role in AI modeling, whose higher expression indicates worse prognosis in breast cancer. Furthermore, inhibition of CDKN2A down-regulates decreases Snail1, Twist1, Zeb1, vimentin and MMP9, while E-cadherin is increased. Besides, inhibition of CDKN2A also decreases the expression of MEGEA4, phosphorylated STAT3, PD-L1, and caspase3, while cleaved-caspase3 is increased. Finally, we find down-regulation of CDKN2A or MAGEA inhibits cell migration and wound healing, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

AI identified CRG subgroups in pan-cancer based on CRGs-related TDGs, and 44-gene-based AI modeling is a novel tool to identify chemotherapy sensitivity in breast cancer, in which CDKN2A/MAGEA4 pathway played the most important role.

Exploring Sorafenib and Simvastatin Combination for Ferroptosis-Induced Cancer Treatment: Cytotoxicity Screening, In Vivo Efficacy, and Safety Assessment

Ferroptosis, a pathway dependent on oxygen and iron catalysts, holds promise as a therapeutic approach for cancer treatment due to its manageable regulation, direct control, and immunogenic properties. The sensitivity of cancer cells to ferroptosis induction varies based on their metabolic, genetic, and signalling pathways, prompting the use of combination therapy. In this study, we conducted a screening of drug combinations, including sorafenib (SOR) with simvastatin (SIM), phenethyl isothiocyanate, and trigonelline, in MDA-MB-231, A549, and HeLa cells to assess their cytotoxicity. The SOR-SIM combination exhibited a synergistic effect in MDA-MB-231, A549, and HeLa cells, with calculated CI values of ~ 0.66, 0.53, and 0.59, respectively. Furthermore, co-treatment with ferrostatin-1 resulted in a concentration-dependent increase in the IC50 values. Additionally, SOR + SIM demonstrated a significant reduction in GSH levels, an increase in MDA levels, and mitochondrial membrane depolarization across all three cell lines, indicating their ferroptosis inducing potential. In-vivo studies showed a significant reduction in tumor volume by 3.53-, 2.55-, and 1.47-fold compared to control, SIM, and SOR, respectively. Toxicity assessments revealed insignificant changes in biomarker levels and no observable deformations in isolated organs, except for erythrocyte shrinkage and membrane scrambling effects caused by the SOR + SIM combination. Overall, our findings highlight the potential of the SOR + SIM combination as an effective strategy for cancer treatment, emphasizing the importance of further research in targeted drug delivery systems to ensure its safety.

Global research trends and prospects on the first-generation college students from 2002 to 2022: a bibliometric analysis via CiteSpace

Objectives

To review literature related to first-generation college students, the paper aims to outline the research direction, identify prominent research topics and frontiers, report on current research trends, and offer valuable insights and fresh perspectives for future advancements in the field, utilizing CiteSpace.

Methods

CiteSpace is a citation visualization software designed to analyze the scholarly literature and uncover potential knowledge within it. This study retrieved articles related to first-generation college students from 2002 to 2022 from Web of Science Core Collection database. After collecting the data, CiteSpace V.6.1.R3 (64-bit) was used to perform analyses on various aspects, including annual publication output, top cited journals, country and institutional affiliations, prominent authors, cited references, and keywords. The data was visualized using tools such as knowledge maps, collaborative network analysis, cluster analysis, and strongest citation burst analysis.

Results

We obtained a total of 471 articles on first-generation college students. The number of publications annually is increasing, and the number of publications generally shows an upward trend, especially in 2017-2021 with a sharp growth. The United States has the most articles on this topic (395 articles), and it is also the most authoritative and influential country (with a centrality of 0.93). Followed by South Africa (14 articles) and Germany (14 articles), The top 10 cited journals and institutions are predominantly from the United States. When analyzing the top cited references and authors, the research consistently highlights the academic achievement and engagement of first-generation college students.

Conclusion

This study analyzed the current situation of first-generation college students field via CiteSpace, then identify the research hotspots and frontiers on first-generation college students. Current global trends in first-generation college students researches and the growing public awareness of academic performance and equality suggest that first-generation college students researches will grow in popularity with further breakthroughs.

Bibliometric analysis of stem cells for spinal cord injury: current status and emerging frontiers

Background: This study aimed to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the literature on stem cell therapy for spinal cord injury to visualize the research status, identify hotspots, and explore the development trends in this field. Methods: We searched the Web of Science Core Collection database using relevant keywords ("stem cells" and "spinal cord injury") and retrieved the published literature between 2000 and 2022. Data such as journal title, author information, institutional affiliation, country, and keywords were extracted. Afterwards, we performed bibliometric analysis of the retrieved data using Bibliometrix, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace. Results: A total of 5375 articles related to stem cell therapy for spinal cord injury were retrieved, and both the annual publication volume and the cumulative publication volume showed an upward trend. neural regeneration research was the journal with the most publications and the fastest cumulative publication growth (162 articles), Okano Hideyuki was the author with the highest number of publications and citations (114 articles), Sun Yat-sen University was the institution with the highest number of publications (420 articles), and China was the country with the highest number of publications (5357 articles). However, different authors, institutions, and countries need to enhance their cooperation in order to promote the generation of significant academic achievements. Current research in this field has focused on stem cell transplantation, neural regeneration, motor function recovery, exosomes, and tissue engineering. Meanwhile, future research directions are primarily concerned with the molecular mechanisms, safety, clinical trials, exosomes, scaffolds, hydrogels, and inflammatory responses of stem cell therapy for spinal cord injuries. Conclusion: In summary, this study provided a comprehensive analysis of the current research status and frontiers of stem cell therapy for spinal cord injury. The findings provide a foundation for future research and clinical translation efforts of stem cell therapy in this field.

Global trends in BRCA-related breast cancer research from 2013 to 2022: A scientometric analysis

Introduction

Since the mid-2000s, breast cancer incidence among women has slowly increased at about 0.5% per year. In the last three decades, Breast Cancer Susceptibility Gene (BRCA) has been proven to be the crucial gene in encouraging the incidence and development of breast cancer. However, scientometric analysis on BRCA-related breast cancer is in shortage. Thus, to have a clear understanding of the current status and catch up with the hotspots, a scientometric analysis was conducted on specific academic publications collected from the Web of Science (WoS).

Methods

We searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) to procure associated articles as our dataset. Bibliometric, CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and HistCite software were then applied to conduct visual analyses of countries, institutions, journals, authors, landmark articles, and keywords in this research field.

Results

A total of 7,266 articles and 1,310 review articles published between 2013 to 2022 were retrieved eventually. The annual output steadily rose year by year and peaked in 2021. The USA led the way in the number of published works, total citations, and collaboration. Breast Cancer Research and Treatment was the most favoured journal in this research field. Narod SA from the University of Toronto produced the most publications. At last, the most prominent keywords were "breast cancer" (n=1,778), "women" (n=1,369), "brca1" (n=1,276), "ovarian cancer" (n=1,259), "risk" (n=1,181), and "mutations" (n=929), which exposed the hotspots within the BRCA domain of breast cancer study.

Conclusion

The tendency in the BRCA research field over the past decade was presented by the scientometric analysis. The current research focus is the clinical trials of poly-adenosine diphosphate ribose polymerase inhibitors (PARPi) drugs and their resistance mechanisms.

Global Research Trends of Exosomes in the Central Nervous System: A Bibliometric and Visualized Analysis

OBJECTIVE

Exosomes in the central nervous system (CNS) have become an attractive area of research with great value. However, few bibliometric analysis has been conducted. The study aimed to visualize the scientific trends and research hotspots of exosomes in the CNS by bibliometric analysis.

METHODS

All potential articles and reviews on exosomes in the CNS published in English from 2001 to 2021 were extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection. The visualization knowledge maps of critical indicators, including countries/regions, institutions, authors, journals, references, and keywords, were generated by CiteSpace and VOSviewer software. Besides, each domain's quantitative and qualitative analysis was also considered.

RESULTS

A total of 2,629 papers were included. The number of exosomes-related publications and citations regarding CNS increased yearly. These publications came from 2,813 institutions in 77 countries/regions, led by the United States and China. Harvard University was the most influential institution, while the National Institutes of Health was the most critical funding source. We identified 14,468 authors, among which Kapogiannis D had the most significant number of articles and the highest H-index, while Théry C was the most frequently co-cited. The cluster analysis of keywords generated 13 clusters. In summary, the topic of biogenesis, biomarker, and drug delivery will serve as hotspots in future research.

CONCLUSION

Exosomes-related CNS research has gained considerable attention in the past 20 years. The sources and biological functions of exosomes and their promising role in diagnosing and treating CNS diseases are considered hotspots in this field. The clinical translation of the results from exosomes-related CNS research will be of great importance in the future.

MXene nanomaterials in biomedicine: A bibliometric perspective

Purpose: MXene is two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials that comprise transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides. Their unique nanostructure attributes it a special role in medical applications. However, bibliometric studies have not been conducted in this field. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis to evaluate the global scientific output of MXene in biomedical research, explore the current situation of this field in the past years and predicte its research hotpots. Methods: We utilized visual analysis softwares Citespace and Bibliometrix to analyze all relevant documents published in the period of 2011-2022. The bibliometric records were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection. Results: A total of 1,489 publications were analyzed in this study. We observed that China is the country with the largest number of publications, with Sichuan University being the institution with the highest number of publications in this field. The most publications on MXene medicine research in the past year were found primarily in journals about Chemistry/Materials/Physics. Moreover, ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces was found to be the most productive journal in this field. Co-cited references and keyword cluster analysis revealed that #antibacterial# and #photothermal therapy# are the research focus keyword and burst detection suggested that driven wearable electronics were newly-emergent research hot spots. Conclusion: Our bibliometric analysis indicates that research on MXene medical application remains an active field of study. At present, the research focus is on the application of MXene in the field of antibacterial taking advantage of its photothermal properties. In the future, wearable electronics is the research direction of MXene medical application.

Comprehensive analysis of the cuproptosis-related gene DLD across cancers: A potential prognostic and immunotherapeutic target

DLD is a key gene involved in “cuproptosis,” but its roles in tumor progression and immunity remain unclear. Exploring the potential mechanisms and biological roles of DLD may provide new insights for therapeutic strategies for tumors. In the present study, we analyzed the role of DLD in a variety of tumors by using several bioinformatic tools. The results showed that compared with normal tissues, tumor tissues representing multiple cancers showed significant differential expression of DLD. High DLD expression was associated with a good prognosis in BRCA, KICH, and LUAD. Conversely, high expression levels of DLD were detrimental to patient prognosis in many other tumors, such as COAD, KIRC, and KIRP. In addition, the associations of DLD with infiltrating immune cells, genetic alterations and methylation levels across cancers were assessed. Aberrant expression of DLD was positively correlated with most infiltrating immune cells, especially neutrophils. The DLD methylation level was significantly decreased in COAD, LIHC, and LUSC but significantly increased in BRCA. DLD had the highest mutation rate (6.04%) in ESCA. In LUSC, patients with genetic alterations in DLD showed a poorer prognosis. At the single-cell level, the roles of DLD in regulating cancer-associated biological functions, such as metastasis, inflammation, and differentiation, were explored. Afterward, we further investigated whether several disease-associated genes could be correlated with DLD. GO enrichment analysis indicated that DLD-related genes were mainly associated with mitochondria-related cellular components, aerobic respiration and the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Finally, the correlations between DLD expression and immunomodulatory genes, immune checkpoints, and sensitivity to some antitumor drugs were investigated. It is worth noting that DLD expression was positively correlated with immune checkpoint genes and immunomodulatory genes in most cancers. In conclusion, this study comprehensively analyzed the differential expression, prognostic value and immune cell infiltration-related function of DLD across cancers. Our results suggest that DLD has great potential to serve as a candidate marker for pancancer prognosis and immunotherapy and may provide a new direction for cancer treatment development.

Global trends in research of achilles tendon injury/rupture: A bibliometric analysis, 2000–2021

Background

The Achilles tendon is the strongest and most susceptible tendon in humans. Achilles tendon injuries and ruptures have gradually attracted research attention. However, a bibliometric analysis of global research in this field is lacking. This study involved a bibliometric analysis of the developmental trends and research hotspots in Achilles tendon injuries/ruptures from 2000 to 2021.

Methods

Articles published between 2001 and 2021 were retrieved from an extended database of the Science Citation Index using Web of Science. VOSviewer and CiteSpace were used to analyze the relationships between publications, countries, institutions, journals, authors, references, and keywords.

Results

This study included 3,505 studies of 73 countries, 3,274 institutions, and 12,298 authors and explored the cooperation between them and the relationships between citations. Over the past 22 years, the number of publications has significantly increased. Foot Ankle International has published the most papers on Achilles tendon injuries/ruptures, and British Journal of Sports Medicine is the most famous journal. Re-rupture, exosomes, acute Achilles tendon rupture, and tendon adhesions gradually become the research focus over the past few years.

Conclusion

Achilles tendon injury and rupture are important research topics. A vast number of newly published papers on this topic have demonstrated that clinicians and researchers are interested in their study. Over time, these recent studies will be widely cited; therefore, this bibliometric analysis should be constantly updated.

Global research trends and hotspots analysis of hallux valgus: A bibliometric analysis from 2004 to 2021

Background

Hallux valgus (HV) is a common foot and ankle surgery disease. The correction of HV deformity relies on a highly challenging surgical treatment. Thus, widely adopted evidence-based clinical guidelines are still needed to guide the selection of the most appropriate interventions. Recently, the study of HV has been growing and scholars are increasingly paying particular attention to this area. However, bibliometric literature remains lacking. Therefore, this study aims to reveal the hotspots and future research trends in HV via bibliometric analysis to fill this knowledge gap.

Methods

Literature related to HV from 2004 to 2021 was retrieved from the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-expanded) of the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). Quantitative and qualitative analyses of scientific data are performed using software such as CiteSpace, R-bibliometrix, and VOSviewer.

Results

A total of 1,904 records were identified for analysis. The United States had the most number of published articles and total citations. Thus, the United States has made an essential contribution to the field of HV. Meanwhile, La Trobe University in Australia was the most productive institution. Menz HB and Foot &amp; Ankle International were the most influential authors and the most popular journals among researchers, respectively. In addition, “older people,” “chevron osteotomy,” “Lapidus,” and “hallux rigidus” have always been the hotspots of attention. Changes and developments in the surgery of HV have gained researchers' interest. Future research trends are more focused on “radiographic measurement,” “recurrence,” “outcome,” “rotation,” “pronation,” and “minimally invasive surgery.” Thus, focusing on these subject directions can facilitate academic progress and provide the possibility of better treatments for HV.

Conclusion

This study summarizes the hotspots and trends in the field of HV from 2004 to 2021, which will provide researchers with an updated view of essential information and somehow guide future research.

Drug-Induced Cardiotoxicity in Children During the Past 30 Years: A Bibliometric Study and Visualization Analysis

BACKGROUND Drug-induced cardiotoxicity (DICT) is one of the most serious adverse drug reactions, which is an important safety issue in drug development and clinical practice. This study aimed to summarize the knowledge structure and to detect emerging trends, and provide ideas for future research on DICT in children using bibliometric methods. MATERIAL AND METHODS All publications on DICT in children were retrieved through the Web of Science Core Collection up to April 20, 2022. The document type was restricted to articles with the language set to English. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used to conduct this bibliometric analysis. RESULTS A total of 298 articles were included, and the annual publications decreased since 2021. The United States was the leading country with the most publications (117), the highest centrality (0.39), and total citations (4055). The most influential institution was the University of British Columbia, while Carleton BC and Rassekh SR, both from Canada, were the most productive authors, but there was no leader in this field. The keywords with both high frequency and high centrality after excluding "cardiotoxicity" and "children" were acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Freq=43, Central=0.15), childhood cancer (Freq=42, Central=0.13), toxicity (Freq=33, Central=0.16), and breast cancer (Freq=29, Central=0.19). "Adriamycin cardiotoxicity" was the first burst keyword, while "childhood cancer", "oxidative stress", and "cardiac dysfunction" were emerging research hotspots. CONCLUSIONS Attention to DICT in children was insufficient. This study serves as a breakthrough point, providing a comprehensive overview of the knowledge structure, development landscape, and future opportunities in this field.

Prospects for Anti-Tumor Mechanism and Potential Clinical Application Based on Glutathione Peroxidase 4 Mediated Ferroptosis

Ferroptosis, characterized by excessive iron accumulation and lipid peroxidation, is a novel form of iron-dependent cell death, which is morphologically, genetically, and biochemically distinct from other known cell death types, such as apoptosis, necrosis, and autophagy. Emerging evidence shows that glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), a critical core regulator of ferroptosis, plays an essential role in protecting cells from ferroptosis by removing the product of iron-dependent lipid peroxidation. The fast-growing studies on ferroptosis in cancer have boosted a perspective on its use in cancer therapeutics. In addition, significant progress has been made in researching and developing tumor therapeutic drugs targeting GPX4 based on ferroptosis, especially in acquired drug resistance. Selenium modulates GPX4-mediated ferroptosis, and its existing form, selenocysteine (Sec), is the active center of GPX4. This review explored the structure and function of GPX4, with the overarching goal of revealing its mechanism and potential application in tumor therapy through regulating ferroptosis. A deeper understanding of the mechanism and application of GPX4-mediated ferroptosis in cancer therapy will provide new strategies for the research and development of antitumor drugs.

Global trends and hotspots of phage therapy for bacterial infection: A bibliometric visualized analysis from 2001 to 2021

Background

Antibiotic resistance is one of the main global threats to human health, and just the development of new antimicrobial medications is not enough to solve the crisis. Phage therapy (PT), a safe and effective treatment method, has reignited the interest of researchers due to its efficacy in the clinical treatment of drug-resistant bacterial infections. There is, however, no bibliometric analysis of the overall trends on this topic. Therefore, this study aims to provide an overview of the current state of development and research in this area.

Methods

We extracted all relevant publications from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database between 2001 and 2021. We performed bibliometric analysis and visualization using CiteSpace, VOS viewer, and R software. Annual trends of publications, countries/regions distributions, institutions, funding agencies, co-cited journals, author contributions, core journals, references, and keywords were analyzed.

Results

A total of 6,538 papers were enrolled in this study, including 5,364 articles and 1,174 reviews. Publications have increased drastically from 61 in 2001 to 937 in 2021, with 3,659 articles published in the last 5 years. North America, Western Europe, and East Asia were significant contributor regions. The United States, China, and the United Kingdom were the most productive countries. The Polish Academy of Sciences was the most contributive institution. Frontiers in Microbiology and Applied and Environmental Microbiology were the most productive and co-cited journals. A. Gorski and R. Lavigne published most articles in this field, while V. A. Fischetti was the author with the most cited. Regarding keywords, research focuses include phage biology, phage against clinically important pathogens, phage lysis proteins, phage therapy, biofilm-related research, and recent clinical applications.

Conclusion

Phage therapy is a potential strategy for combating antibiotic resistance, and it will provide us with an alternative therapeutic option for bacterial infection. According to global trends, the scientific output of PT in bacterial infections is increasing, with developed countries such as the United States leading the way in this area. Although the safety and efficacy of PT have been proven, more clinical trials on the phages against infectious diseases caused by various pathogens are still needed.

Bibliometric analysis of ferroptosis in acute kidney injury from 2014 to 2022

INTRODUCTION

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a global disease with high morbidity and mortality. At present, the treatment of AKI still lacks targeted measures. Ferroptosis, a form of regulated cell death, plays an essential role in the initiation and progression of AKI. Current evidence proves that targeting ferroptosis is supposed to be a novel potential strategy to cure AKI. In this study, we aim to use bibliometric analysis to identify research trends and hotspots in the field of "ferroptosis in AKI".

METHODS

We chose the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED) index of the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) as the source database for data retrieval. Data were retrieved from the WoSCC on May 24, 2022. Full records and cited references of all the documents in WoSCC were collected. The R software and the Online Analysis Platform of Literature Metrology were used for data analysis and visual analysis.

RESULTS

There were 120 documents on "ferroptosis in AKI" in the WOSCC from 2014 to 2022 (May 24, 2022). There was a clear upward trend each year in the number of documents published. According to WoS report, China, the United States, and Germany were the top three countries involved in this research area, the majority of publications were included in the subject area "Cell Biology". Technical University of Dresden contributed the most publications, followed by Central South University and University of Pittsburgh. The Journal of Cell Death and Disease had the highest H-index and contributed the most publications. Linkermann A authored 16 articles and had the highest H-index. Multifactorial analysis of the keywords show that the research field is divided into two clusters. The most contributing publications and the most cited publications were also determined by factorial analysis.

CONCLUSION

This bibliometric analysis provides a comprehensive analysis of research trends and hot spots on the topic of "ferroptosis in AKI". The study of ferroptosis-related AKI research remains in its early stages. There will be a dramatically increasing number of publications on this field. Further research should focus on exploring the mechanisms of crosstalk between ferroptosis and other programmed cell deaths, and improves clinical applications and therapeutic effects against AKI.

Artificial intelligence applicated in gastric cancer: A bibliometric and visual analysis via CiteSpace

Objective

This study aimed to analyze and visualize the current research focus, research frontiers, evolutionary processes, and trends of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of gastric cancer using a bibliometric analysis.

Methods

The Web of Science Core Collection database was selected as the data source for this study to retrieve and obtain articles and reviews related to AI in gastric cancer. All the information extracted from the articles was imported to CiteSpace to conduct the bibliometric and knowledge map analysis, allowing us to clearly visualize the research hotspots and trends in this field.

Results

A total of 183 articles published between 2017 and 2022 were included, contributed by 201 authors from 33 countries/regions. Among them, China (47.54%), Japan (21.86%), and the USA (13.11%) have made outstanding contributions in this field, accounting fsor 82.51% of the total publications. The primary research institutions were Wuhan University, Tokyo University, and Tada Tomohiro Inst Gastroenterol and Proctol. Tada (n = 12) and Hirasawa (n = 90) were ranked first in the top 10 authors and co-cited authors, respectively. Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (21 publications; IF 2022, 9.189; Q1) was the most published journal, while Gastric Cancer (133 citations; IF 2022, 8.171; Q1) was the most co-cited journal. Nevertheless, the cooperation between different countries and institutions should be further strengthened. The most common keywords were AI, gastric cancer, and convolutional neural network. The "deep-learning algorithm" started to burst in 2020 and continues till now, which indicated that this research topic has attracted continuous attention in recent years and would be the trend of research on AI application in GC.

Conclusions

Research related to AI in gastric cancer is increasing exponentially. Current research hotspots focus on the application of AI in gastric cancer, represented by convolutional neural networks and deep learning, in diagnosis and differential diagnosis and staging. Considering the great potential and clinical application prospects, the related area of AI applications in gastric cancer will remain a research hotspot in the future.

Mapping trends and hotspot regarding gastrointestinal microbiome and neuroscience: A bibliometric analysis of global research (2002-2022)

BACKGROUND

Scholars have long understood that gastrointestinal microorganisms are intimately related to human disorders. The literature on research involving the gut microbiome and neuroscience is emerging. This study exposed the connections between gut microbiota and neuroscience methodically and intuitively using bibliometrics and visualization. This study's objectives were to summarize the knowledge structure and identify emerging trends and potential hotspots in this field.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

On October 18, 2022, a literature search was conducted utilizing the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database for studies on gut microbiota and neuroscience studies from 2002 to 2022 (August 20, 2022). VOSviewer and CiteSpace V software was used to conduct the bibliometrics and visualization analysis.

RESULTS

From 2002 to 2022 (August 20, 2022), 2,275 publications in the WoSCC database satisfied the criteria. The annual volume of publications has rapidly emerged in recent years (2016-2022). The most productive nation (n = 732, 32.18%) and the hub of inter-country cooperation (links: 38) were the United States. University College Cork had the most research papers published in this area, followed by McMaster University and Harvard Medical School. Cryan JF, Dinan TG, and Clarke G were key researchers with considerable academic influence. The journals with the most publications are "Neurogastroenterology and Motility" and "Brain Behavior and Immunity." The most cited article and co-cited reference was Cryan JF's 2012 article on the impact of gut microbiota on the brain and behavior. The current research hotspot includes gastrointestinal microbiome, inflammation, gut-brain axis, Parkinson's disease (PD), and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The research focus would be on the "gastrointestinal microbiome, inflammation: a link between obesity, insulin resistance, and cognition" and "the role of two important theories of the gut-brain axis and microbial-gut-brain axis in diseases." Burst detection analysis showed that schizophrenia, pathology, and psychiatric disorder may continue to be the research frontiers.

CONCLUSION

Research on "gastrointestinal microbiome, inflammation: a link between obesity, insulin resistance, and cognition" and "the role of two important theories of the gut-brain axis and microbial-gut-brain axis in diseases" will continue to be the hotspot. Schizophrenia and psychiatric disorder will be the key research diseases in the field of gut microbiota and neuroscience, and pathology is the key research content, which is worthy of scholars' attention.

Clinical studies of magnetic resonance elastography from 1995 to 2021: Scientometric and visualization analysis based on CiteSpace

BACKGROUND

To assess the knowledge framework around magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) and to explore MRE research hotspots and emerging trends.

METHODS

The Science Citation Index Expanded of the Web of Science Core Collection was searched on 22 October 2021 for MRE-related studies published between 1995 and 2021. Excel 2016 and CiteSpace V (version 5.8.R3) were used to analyze the downloaded data.

RESULTS

In all, 1,236 articles published by 726 authors from 540 institutions in 40 countries were included in this study. The top 10 authors published 57.6% of all included articles. The 3 most productive countries were the USA (n=631), Germany (n=202), and France (n=134), and the 3 most productive institutions were the Mayo Clinic (n=240), Charité (n=131), and the University of Illinois (n=56). The USA and the Mayo Clinic had the highest betweenness centrality among countries and institutions, respectively, and played an important role in the field of MRE. In this study, the 24,347 distinct references were clustered into 48 categories via reasonable clustering using specific keywords, forming the knowledge framework. Among the 294 co-occurring keywords, "hepatic fibrosis", "stiffness", "skeletal muscle", "acoustic strain wave", "in vivo", and "non-invasive assessment" were research hotspots. "Diagnostic performance", "diagnostic accuracy", "hepatic steatosis", "chronic hepatitis B", "radiation force impulse", "children", and "echo" were frontier topics.

CONCLUSIONS

Scientometric and visualized analysis of MRE can provide information regarding the knowledge framework, research hotspots, frontier areas, and emerging trends in this field.

MiR-93-5p promotes granulosa cell apoptosis and ferroptosis by the NF-kB signaling pathway in polycystic ovary syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorders in women of reproductive age. miR-93-5p has been reported to be elevated in granulosa cells of PCOS patients. However, the mechanism by which miR-93-5p drives granulosa cell (GC) progression remains unclear. Thus, this study focuses on the roles and mechanisms of miR-93-5p in the GCs of PCOS.

METHODS

KGN cells have similar ovarian physiological characteristics and are used to study the function and regulatory mechanism of GCs. In this study, KGN cells were transfected with si-NC, si-miR93-5p, oe-NC and oe-miR93-5p. A cell counting kit-8 assay, flow cytometry and western blotting were performed to observe the proliferation and apoptosis of KGN in different groups. Subsequently, the levels of reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde, GPX4, SLC7A11 and Nrf2, which are indicators of ferroptosis, were measured by a dihydroethidium fluorescent dye probe, biochemical kit, western blotting and reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Ultimately, bioinformatic analysis and experimental methods were used to examine the interaction between miR-93-5p and the NF-κB signaling pathway.

RESULTS

miR-93-5p was upregulated in the GCs of PCOS patients. Overexpression of miR-93-5p promoted apoptosis and ferroptosis in KGN cells, while knockdown of miR-93-5p showed the reverse effect. Biological analysis and subsequent experiments demonstrated that miR-93-5p negatively regulates the NF- κB signaling pathway.

CONCLUSION

miR-93-5p promotes the apoptosis and ferroptosis in GC by regulating the NF-κB signaling pathway. Silencing of miR-93-5p protects against GC dysfunction. Our study identified miR-93-5p as a new molecular target for improving the function of GCs in PCOS patients.

The research landscape of ferroptosis in the brain: A bibliometric analysis

Background: Ferroptosis is a newly proposed concept of programmed cell death and has been widely studied in many diseases during the past decade. However, a bibliometric study that concentrates on publication outputs and research trends of ferroptosis related to the brain is lacking. Methods: We retrieved publication data in the field of ferroptosis in the brain from the Web of Science Core Collection on 31 December 2021. A bibliometric analysis was performed using VOSviewer and CiteSpace software. Results: Six hundred fifty-six documents focusing on ferroptosis in the brain were published from 2012 to 2021. The number of publications in this field has shown a steady increase in recent years. Most publications were from China (338) and the United States (166), while the most productive organizations were at the University of Melbourne (34) and University of Pittsburgh (23). Ashley I. Bush was the most productive author, while Scott J Dixon was the most co-cited author. The journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine published the most articles in this field, while Cell was the most cited journal. Among 656 publications, top 10 cited documents were cited at least 300 times. Among the top 20 references with the strongest citation bursts, half of the papers had a burst until 2021. The keywords analysis suggests that the top 20 keywords appeared at least 40 times. Additionally, "amyloid precursor protein" was the keyword with strongest bursts. Conclusion: Research on ferroptosis in the brain will continue to be highly regarded. This study analyzed the research landscape of ferroptosis in the brain and offers a new reference for researchers in this field.

Bibliometric analysis of global research trends on small-cell lung cancer (2012–2021)

Background

Small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a recalcitrant tumor with a poor prognosis. With the rise of SCLC research in the past decade, this study aims to analyze the foundation and frontiers of SCLC research through bibliometric analysis.

Methods

Relevant publications from the Web of Science Core Collection were retrieved on January 3, 2022. R package bibliometrix and EXCEL2019 were used to analyze quantitative variables. Bibliometric mapping was constructed by VOS viewer and CiteSpace software to visualize citation, co-authorship, co-occurrence, and co-citation analysis of countries/regions, organizations, authors, references, and keywords.

Results

A total of 2,361 publications related to SCLC were identified with the total amount of articles steadily increasing, where China is the most productive country with 859 papers. Scholars and organizations from the United States, China, and Europe are primary sources of this research, among which the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center made the most contribution to the field with 122 papers. Lung Cancer published the highest number of SCLC-related articles with a total of 121, while the Journal of Thoracic Oncology received the most citations totaling 3,098. Rudin, Charles M., and Sage, Julien are the most creative author. Leora, Horn, 2018, New Engl J Med and Rudin, Charles M., Nat Genet, 2012 can be categorized as classic literature owing to their high citations or strong sigma value. “Heterogeneity & Subtypes” and “Immunotherapy” may be the new frontiers in the SCLC domain.

Conclusion

Research on SCLC showed an upward trend based on the current global situation. Moreover, the current scope of collaboration in SCLC research is chiefly regional, which should further focus on transnational cooperation in the future. More attention should be devoted to “Heterogeneity & Subtypes” and “Immunotherapy”, which will be the hotspots in future research.

A cuproptosis-related genes signature associated with prognosis and immune cell infiltration in osteosarcoma

Osteosarcoma (OS) is one of the most prevalent primary bone tumors at all ages of human development. The objective of our study was to develop a model of Cuproptosis-Related Genes (CRGs) for predicting prognosis in OS patients. All datasets of OS patients were obtained from the Therapeutically Applicable Research to Generate Effective Treatments (TARGET) database and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. We obtained the gene set (81 CRGs) related to cuproptosis by accessing the database and previous literature. All the CRGs were analyzed by univariate COX regression, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) COX regression analysis to screen for CRGs associated with prognosis in OS patients. Then these CRGs were used to construct a prognostic signature, which was further verified by independent cohort (GSE21257) and clinical correlation analysis. Afterward, to identify underlying mechanisms, Gene Ontology (GO) analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis were used for the high-risk group by using the GSEA method. The association between the prognostic signature and 28 types of immune infiltrating cells in the tumor microenvironment was assessed. Ultimately, Lipoic Acid Synthetase (LIAS) (HR=0.632, P=0.004), Lipoyltransferase 1 (LIPT1) (HR=0.524, P=0.011), BCL2 Like 1 (BCL2L1/BCL-XL) (HR=0.593, P=0.022), and Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Kinase 1 (PDK1) (HR=0.662, P=0.025) were identified. Subsequently, they were used to calculate the risk score and build a prognostic model. In the training cohort, risk score (HR=1.878, P=0.003) could be considered as an independent prognostic factor, and OS patients with high-risk scores showed lower survival rates. Biological pathways related to substance metabolism and transport were enriched. There were significant differences in immune infiltrating cells in the tumor microenvironment. All in all, The CRGs signature is related to the tumor immune microenvironment and could be used as a credible predictor of the prognostic status in OS patients.

Knowledge mapping of targeted immunotherapy for myasthenia gravis from 1998 to 2022: A bibliometric analysis

Background

The treatment of myasthenia gravis (MG) has advanced from steroids and traditional immunosuppressants to targeted immunotherapy. Targeted immunotherapy has been successfully employed in clinical practice in recent years. This study aimed to explore the emerging trend of targeted immunotherapy in MG and summarize the knowledge structure through bibliometric methods.

Methods

The Web of Science Core Collection database (WoSCC) was chosen to retrieve the literature on targeted immunotherapy for MG. Two bibliometric analysis software, VOSviewer and CiteSpace, and bibliometric online platform were mainly used to evaluate the contributions from countries/regions, institutions, journals, and authors through the construction and visualization of bibliometric networks. By systematically reviewing a knowledge domain, future research developments were determined. The R version 4.1.2 and Microsoft Excel 365 were used for statistical analysis.

Results

A total of 562 original articles and 262 reviews relevant to MG targeted immunotherapy were included. The number of publications on targeted immunotherapy for MG exhibited a two-phase advancement. The first stage showed a steady growth trend from 1998 to 2016, with an annual number of no more than 35 publications. The second stage revealed an explosive growth trend from 2017, reaching a peak number of publications in 2020. The United States ranked first in the number of publications, citations, and h-index. The author with the highest citation and h-index was Vincent A. And 28.03% of the articles were published in the top 10 journals. In addition to “myasthenia gravis”, the keyword with the highest consideration was “rituximab”, followed by “double-blind”, which indicate research hotspots gradually from basic research to clinical research over time, especially in the field of targeted immunotherapy. The MG treatment has entered a personalized precision treatment phase. Exploration into new target molecules and conducting high-quality randomized controlled trials on existing biological agents are the further research direction.

Conclusion

The current study summarized the global research trends concerning targeted immunotherapy for MG. Research interests gradually advanced from basic research to clinical research. MG treatment has entered a personalized precision treatment phase. Further investigations into new target molecules and high-quality randomized controlled trials on existing biological agents are required urgently to direct future immunotherapy research.

Unveiling the knowledge domain and emerging trends of olfactory dysfunction with depression or anxiety: A bibliometrics study

Olfactory dysfunction (OD) accompanied by depression or anxiety is a very common clinical problem, and there has been a growing number of studies on OD with depression or anxiety in recent decades. This study performed bibliometric and visual analyses of the literature on OD with depression or anxiety to derive research trends and identify emerging research foci. Relevant publications were obtained from the Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index in the Web of Science Core Collection databases (2002–2021). CiteSpace and VOSviewer were applied to identify and evaluate research foci and emerging trends in this research domain. The analyses found that the number of publications related to OD with depression or anxiety has increased significantly over the past 20 years, up from 15 in 2002 to 114 in 2022. The country that ranked highest in the number of articles and international cooperation was the United States. The top 10 most frequent keywords were “depression,” “olfaction,” “anxiety,” “dysfunction,” “olfactory bulbectomy,” “olfactory dysfunction,” “Parkinson’s disease,” “odor identification,” “brain,” and “disorders.” Analysis of keywords with the strongest citation bursts revealed that “oxidative stress” is an emerging research hotspot. A timeline chart of the cluster of co-cited references demonstrated that Parkinson’s disease was always a topic of interest in this area of research. This study conducted an objective, comprehensive, and systematic analysis of these publications, and identified the development of trends and hotspots in this research domain. It is hoped that this work will provide scholars, worldwide, with information to assist them in further research and the development of new therapies.

A bibliometric analysis of DNA methylation in cardiovascular diseases from 2001 to 2021

BACKGROUND

DNA methylation is a dynamically reversible form of epigenetics. Dynamic regulation plays an important role in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, there have been few bibliometric studies in this field. We aimed to visualize the research results and hotspots of DNA methylation in CVDs using a bibliometric analysis to provide a scientific direction for future research.

METHODS

Publications related to DNA methylation in CVDs from January 1, 2001, to September 15, 2021, were searched and confirmed from the Web of Science Core Collection. CiteSpace 5.7 and VOSviewer 1.6.15 were used for bibliometric and knowledge-map analyses.

RESULTS

A total of 2617 publications were included in 912 academic journals by 15,584 authors from 963 institutions from 85 countries/regions. Among them, the United States of America, China, and England were the top 3 countries contributing to the field of DNA methylation. Harvard University, Columbia University, and University of Cambridge were the top 3 contributing institutions in terms of publications and were closely linked. PLoS One was the most published and co-cited journal. Baccarelli Andrea A published the most content, while Barker DJP had the highest frequency of co-citations. The keyword cluster focused on the mechanism, methyl-containing substance, exposure/risk factor, and biomarker. In terms of research hotspots, references with strong bursts, which are still ongoing, recently included "epigenetic clock" (2017-2021), "obesity, smoking, aging, and DNA methylation" (2017-2021), and "biomarker and epigenome-wide association study" (2019-2021).

CONCLUSIONS

We used bibliometric and visual methods to identify research hotspots and trends in DNA methylation in CVDs. Epigenetic clocks, biomarkers, environmental exposure, and lifestyle may become the focus and frontier of future research.

Emerging trends and hot spots in autoimmune thyroiditis research from 2000 to 2022: A bibliometric analysis

Background

Autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) is the most common autoimmune disease, affecting 3-5% patients worldwide. In recent years, approximately 200 articles on AIT have been published annually in various journals. However, to date, no article has systematically assessed the related literature. Therefore, we conducted a bibliometric analysis on AIT to reveal the dynamic scientific developments and help researchers gain a global perspective while exploring the hotspots and development trends.

Methods

AIT-related articles and reviews from 2000 to 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). The following search terms were used to extract document data: TS= (“ autoimmune thyroiditi*”) OR TI= (“chronic lymphocytic thyroiditi*”) OR TI=(hashimoto*) OR TI= (“postpartum thyroiditis”). We selected articles and reviews published in English from 2000 to 2022. Three software programs (VOSviewer, CiteSpace, Pajek) were employed to analyze the contribution and co-occurrence relationships of different references, countries/regions, institutes, journals and also keywords in this field.

Results

This scientometric study included 2290 English papers published in 723 journals with 39661 co-cited references from 561 institutions in 120 countries/regions. Based on the reference and keyword analysis, researchers used to focus on “apoptosis”, “insulin resistance”, “encephalopathy”, “IFN-γ” related to AIT during the past 20 years. However, with the development of other novel directions such as “papillary thyroid cancer” (2018-2022), “Vitamin D” (2016-2022), “oxidative stress” (2018-2022), “polymorphism” (2019-2022) and “association” (2020-2022), researchers are more interested in the relationship between papillary thyroid carcinoma and AIT, the effect of vitamin D supplementation on AIT, the oxidative stress in thyroid disease as well as the influence of polymorphism.

Conclusion

Bibliometric analysis of the outputs of AIT shows an overview of the current status of the research on AIT. The associations between papillary thyroid carcinoma, vitamin D, oxidative stress, polymorphism and AIT are major research frontiers. However, further research and collaboration are still required worldwide. Our findings can help researchers grasp the research status of AIT and quickly determine new directions for future research.

Frontiers of ferroptosis research: An analysis from the top 100 most influential articles in the field

In recent years, ferroptosis has become a research hotspot in programmed cell death. Since the concept of ferroptosis was proposed, a growing number of articles have been published on this topic. Nevertheless, to our knowledge, these ferroptosis-related publications that have received a great deal of attention have not been quantitatively evaluated. In this study, we analyzed the top 100 most influential articles over the past decade through a bibliometric method to characterize the research status and trends in this field. Web of Science Core Collection was searched to identify relevant studies. After being manually screened, the top 100 most cited studies with original data were identified and analyzed. Bibliometric software including VOSviewer and R-Bibliometrix were used to perform visualization analysis. The citation frequency for the top 100 selected articles ranged from 135 to 3603 (326.6 citations on average). These articles originated from 25 countries/regions, with more than half originating from the United States and China. The most frequently nominated author was Stockwell BR from the Columbia University, and of the top 100 articles, 19 listed his name. Three core journals were Nature, Cell and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. In addition to term of ferroptosis, these terms or phrases including cell death, cancer cell, GPX4, pathway, inhibitor, mechanism, iron, lipid peroxidation, resistance, erastin, sorafenib, P53, reactive oxygen species, necroptosis, apoptosis, glutathione peroxidase, ACSL4, autophagy, and SLC7A11 appeared more frequently in the top 100 articles. Overall, although much progress has been made, the research on ferroptosis is still at an early stage. The current attention in this field mainly focuses on potential regulatory mechanism and pathways including key ferroptosis-related genes/molecules, oxidant and antioxidant system, ferroptosis-inducing agents or nanomedicine for cancer therapy, as well as the role of ferroptosis in non-neoplastic disorders. Meanwhile, combination therapeutic strategies targeting ferroptosis in radiotherapy or immunotherapy also deserve further attention.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Research on the Links Between Gut Microbiota and Atherosclerosis

Background

Emerging evidence has linked gut microbiota (GM) and its related metabolites to atherosclerosis (AS). This study aimed to analyze the evolution of GM in AS in the past decades, and provide valuable insights in this field.

Methods

Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) was applied to retrieve the publications related to GM in AS from their inception until 2 December 2021, and the data was analyzed in Microsoft Excel, Scimago Graphica, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer.

Results

In total, 560 documents were extracted from the WoSCC databases. The publications have shown rapid growth since 2008. China and Cleveland Clin were the most prolific country and institution, respectively. The journal with the most publications is Nutrients, and Nature was the most co-cited journal. Among 3556 related authors, Hazen, Stanley L., Tang, W. H. Wilson, and Wang, Zeneng were the top 3 contributing authors in this field. Aside from “gut microbiota,” “atherosclerosis,” the terms “TMAO,” “metabolite,” “obesity,” and “phosphatidylcholine” were frequently occurred in the abstract and title of articles. Burst detection of keywords indicated that “metabolic syndrome,” “acid,” and “bile acid” were hot topics in recent years. According to the co-citation analysis of references, the research focus in this area has changed over time, and recent researches focus on choline, hypertension, butyrate, and berberine.

Conclusion

Our study showed that the researches of GM in AS have been flourishing, and the content themes were constantly deepened. Human GM is critical to atherosclerotic diseases, and this hot topic is still worthy of more focus in the future.

The Research Landscape of Ferroptosis in Cancer: A Bibliometric Analysis

Background: Ferroptosis is a novel mechanism of programmed cell death coined in 2012, which has been found to play important roles in human health and disease. In the past decade, ferroptosis research has seen booming growth worldwide. The aim of this study was to visualize the scientific outputs and research trends of ferroptosis in the field of cancer.

Methods: The raw data of publications were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection on 19 December 2021. The information on the impact factor (IF) and Journal Citation Reports (JCR) division were obtained from the website of Web of Science. Two kinds of software (CiteSpace and VOSviewer) were used to perform visualized analysis.

Results: From 2012 to 2021, a total of 1833 publications related to ferroptosis in cancer were identified for final analysis. The annual number of citations and publications grew exponentially over the past decade. China (1,092) and United States (489) had the highest number of publications; Central South University and Guangzhou Medical University were the most productive institutions. Daolin Tang and Scott J Dixon were the most active authors ranked by most productive and co-cited, respectively. The journals with the highest output and co-citation frequency were Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications and Cell, respectively. Among the 1833 publications, four were identified with citations more than 1000 times. Six co-cited references had a citation burst duration until 2021. Analysis of keywords suggested the current research of ferroptosis in cancer clusters in 9 hotspots and newly emerging frontier may be “multidrug resistance”.

Conclusion: Cancer research is the major area of active research in ferroptosis. Our results provide a global landscape of the ferroptosis research in cancer from 2012 to 2021, which serves as a reference for future studies in this field.

Curcumin Restrains Oxidative Stress of After Intracerebral Hemorrhage in Rat by Activating the Nrf2/HO-1 Pathway

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), a severe hemorrhagic stroke, induces cerebral oxidative stress and severe secondary neurological injury. Curcumin was demonstrated to inhibit oxidative stress in the brain after ICH. However, the pharmacological mechanism needs further research. We used an intrastriatal injection of autologous blood to make the rat ICH model, and then the rat was treated with curcumin (100 mg/kg/day). Modified Neurological Severity Score (mNSS) and corner test results showed that curcumin could significantly promote the neurological recovery of ICH rats. Meanwhile, curcumin could substantially reduce ROS and MDA in the tissues around intracranial hematoma and prevent GSH depletion. To explore the pharmacological molecular mechanism of curcumin, we used HAPI cells and primary rat cortical microglia for in vitro experiments. In vitro, heme-treated cells were used as the cell model of ICH to explore the molecular mechanism of inhibiting oxidative stress by curcumin treatment. The results showed that curcumin significantly inhibited heme-induced oxidative stress, decreased intracellular ROS and MDA, and promoted Nrf2 and its downstream antioxidant gene (HO-1, NQO1, and Gpx4) expression. These results suggest that curcumin inhibits oxidative stress by activating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. Here, our results indicate that curcumin can promote the inhibition of oxidative stress in microglia by activating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway and promoting neurological recovery after ICH, providing a new therapeutic target for clinical treatment of ICH.

Knowledge Mapping of the Links Between the Gut Microbiota and Heart Failure: A Scientometric Investigation (2006–2021)

Background

There is considerable research value and extensive application perspectives to explore the link between gut microbiota and heart failure. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of overall characteristics, evolutionary pathways, frontier research hotspots, and future trends in this field.

Methods

Research datasets were acquired from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2021. Three different analysis tools including one online platform, VOS viewer V1.6.17.0, and CiteSpace V5.8.R2 software were used in order to conduct collaboration network analysis, co-cited analysis, co-occurring analysis, and citation burst detection.

Results

A total of 873 publications in the WoSCC database met the requirement. The overall characteristics analysis showed that a steady growth trend in the number of publications and citations, with the predominant literature type being articles and the most frequent subject category being cardiac cardiovascular systems. The United States was the most prolific country and the center of national collaboration. Cleveland Clinic and Nathalie M. Delzenne provided the leading influence with publications, the cooperation between the institutes and authors were relatively weak. Moreover, gut microbiota, heart failure, risk factor, obesity, and inflammation were the keywords that appeared more frequently in the clustering analysis of reference co-citation and keyword co-occurrence. Burst detection analysis of top keywords showed that trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), bile acid, blood pressure, hypertension, and fermentation were the new research foci on the association between gut microbiota and heart failure. Strategies to improve gut microbiota hold promise as a new approach to treat heart failure.

Conclusion

The comprehensive bibliometric study indicates that the structured information may be helpful in understanding research trends in the link between gut microbiota and heart failure, and locating research hotspots and gaps in this domain, especially further advances in this field will lead to significant breakthroughs in the development of novel therapeutic tools for metabolic modulation of heart failure.

The Global Research of Artificial Intelligence on Prostate Cancer: A 22-Year Bibliometric Analysis

Background

With the rapid development of technology, artificial intelligence (AI) has been widely used in the diagnosis and prognosis prediction of a variety of diseases, including prostate cancer. Facts have proved that AI has broad prospects in the accurate diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.

Objective

This study mainly summarizes the research on the application of artificial intelligence in the field of prostate cancer through bibliometric analysis and explores possible future research hotspots.

Methods

The articles and reviews regarding application of AI in prostate cancer between 1999 and 2020 were selected from Web of Science Core Collection on August 23, 2021. Microsoft Excel 2019 and GraphPad Prism 8 were applied to analyze the targeted variables. VOSviewer (version 1.6.16), Citespace (version 5.8.R2), and a widely used online bibliometric platform were used to conduct co-authorship, co-citation, and co-occurrence analysis of countries, institutions, authors, references, and keywords in this field.

Results

A total of 2,749 articles were selected in this study. AI-related research on prostate cancer increased exponentially in recent years, of which the USA was the most productive country with 1,342 publications, and had close cooperation with many countries. The most productive institution and researcher were the Henry Ford Health System and Tewari. However, the cooperation among most institutions or researchers was not close even if the high research outputs. The result of keyword analysis could divide all studies into three clusters: “Diagnosis and Prediction AI-related study”, “Non-surgery AI-related study”, and “Surgery AI-related study”. Meanwhile, the current research hotspots were “deep learning” and “multiparametric MRI”.

Conclusions

Artificial intelligence has broad application prospects in prostate cancer, and a growing number of scholars are devoted to AI-related research on prostate cancer. Meanwhile, the cooperation among various countries and institutions needs to be strengthened in the future. It can be projected that noninvasive diagnosis and accurate minimally invasive treatment through deep learning technology will still be the research focus in the next few years.

Bibliometric Analysis of Ferroptosis in Stroke From 2013 to 2021

Background: Stroke is a major cause of long-term disability and death, but the clinical therapeutic strategy for stroke is limited and more research must be conducted to explore the possible avenues for stroke treatment and recovery. Since ferroptosis is defined, its role in the body has become the focus of attention and discussion, including in stroke.

Methods: In this work, we aim to systematically discuss the “ferroptosis in stroke” research by bibliometric analysis. Documents were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database on October 30, 2021. Statistical analysis and visualization analysis were conducted by the VOSviewer 1.6.15.

Results: Ninety-nine documents were identified for bibliometric analysis. Research on “ferroptosis in stroke” has been rapidly developing and has remained the focus of many scholars and organizations in the last few years, but the Chinese groups in this field still lacked collaboration with others. Documents and citation analysis suggested that Rajiv R. Ratan and Brent R. Stockwell are active researchers, and the research by Qingzhang Tuo, Ishraq Alim, and Qian Li are more important drivers in the development of the field. Keywords associated with lipid peroxidation, ferroptosis, iron, oxidative stress, and cell death had high frequency, but apoptosis, necroptosis, pyroptosis, and autophagy had scant research, and there may be more research ideas in the future by scholars.

Conclusion: Further exploration of the mechanisms of crosstalk between ferroptosis and other programmed cell death may improve clinical applications and therapeutic effects against stroke. Scholars will also continue to pay attention to and be interested in the hot topic “ferroptosis in stroke”, to produce more exciting results and provide new insights into the bottleneck of stroke treatment.

GPX7 Is Targeted by miR-29b and GPX7 Knockdown Enhances Ferroptosis Induced by Erastin in Glioma

Background

Glioma is a lethal primary tumor of central nervous system. Ferroptosis is a newly identified form of necrotic cell death. Triggering ferroptosis has shown potential to eliminate aggressive tumors. GPX7, a member of glutathione peroxidase family (GPXs), has been described to participate in oxidative stress and tumorigenesis. However, the biological functions of GPX7 in glioma are still unknown.

Methods

Bioinformatics method was used to assess the prognostic role of GPX7 in glioma. CCK8, wound healing, transwell and cell apoptosis assays were performed to explore the functions of GPX7 in glioma cells. In vivo experiment was also conducted to confirm in vitro findings. Ferroptosis-related assays were carried out to investigate the association between GPX7 and ferroptosis in glioma.

Results

GPX7 was aberrantly expressed in glioma and higher expression of GPX7 was correlated with adverse outcomes. GPX7 silencing enhanced ferroptosis-related oxidative stress in glioma cells and the loss of GXP7 sensitized glioma to ferroptosis induced by erastin. Furthermore, we found that miR-29b directly suppressed GPX7 expression post-transcriptionally. Reconstitution of miR-29b enhanced erastin sensitivity, partly via GPX7 suppression.

Conclusions

Our study clarified the prognostic role of GPX7 in glioma and preliminarily revealed the role of GPX7 in ferroptosis, which may be conducive to the exploration of therapeutic targets of glioma.

Single-Cell RNA-Seq Reveals the Promoting Role of Ferroptosis Tendency During Lung Adenocarcinoma EMT Progression

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and ferroptosis are two important processes in biology. In tumor cells, they are intimately linked. We used single-cell RNA sequencing to investigate the regulatory connection between EMT and ferroptosis tendency in LUAD epithelial cells. We used Seurat to construct the expression matrix using the GEO dataset GSE131907 and extract epithelial cells. We found a positive correlation between the trends of EMT and ferroptosis tendency. Then we used SCENIC to analyze differentially activated transcription factors and constructed a molecular regulatory directed network by causal inference. Some ferroptosis markers (GPX4, SCP2, CAV1) were found to have strong regulatory effects on EMT. Cell communication networks were constructed by iTALK and implied that Ferro_High_EMT_High cells have a higher expression of SDC1, SDC4, and activation of LGALS9-HARVCR2 pathways. By deconvolution of bulk sequencing, the results of CIBERSORTx showed that the co-occurrence of ferroptosis tendency and EMT may lead to tumor metastasis and non-response to immunotherapy. Our findings showed there is a strong correlation between ferroptosis tendency and EMT. Ferroptosis may have a promotive effect on EMT. High propensities of ferroptosis and EMT may lead to poor prognosis and non-response to immunotherapy.

Bibliometric Evaluation of 2012–2020 Publications on Ferroptosis in Cancer Treatment

Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent regulated cell-death caused by the accumulation of lipid peroxides, which is different from apoptosis, autophagy, necroptosis and other forms of regulatory cell death in morphology and mechanism. It has attracted interest and attention of scholars from all over the world during the past years. Recent studies have shown that ferroptosis is able to play a clear and important role in cancer treatment, providing a bright prospect for targeted cancer therapy. This article aims to analyze current scientific results about the application of ferroptosis in the field of cancer treatment, providing new ideas for further research. We retrieved publications related to ferroptosis and cancer treatment from 2012 to 2020 from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), screening them according to the inclusion criteria. A total of 965 related papers were included, and the total number of publications increased year by year. We used CiteSpace 5.7. R2, VOSviewer and Microsoft Excel 2019 to evaluate and visualize the results, analyzing institutions, countries/regions, journals, authors, co-cited reference and keywords. Overall, with more and more evidence showing the indispensable role of ferroptosis in cancer, its mechanism research and target discovery may become the main direction of future research.

Global trends of indocyanine green fluorescence navigation in laparoscopic cholecystectomy: bibliometrics and knowledge atlas analysis

BACKGROUND

Indocyanine green fluorescence cholangiography is a new type of cholangiography that has emerged in recent years. It has many advantages, such as simplicity, safety, and efficiency, and is expected to become a routine procedure for intraoperative cholangiography in the future. However, there is no bibliometric analysis of horizontal generalization in this field. Therefore, this study aims to assess the current research status and developmental trends in this field from a global perspective and to help guide the focus of future research.

METHODS

This study was conducted by retrieving the literature related to ICG fluorescence cholangiography published in English from 2000 to 2021 from Web of Science. The Histcite. Pro tool was used to analyze the bibliometric indicators, and VOSviewer was used to visualize the research trends and hotspots in this field.

RESULTS

192 related studies were finally included. For the past 20 years, the number of related publications in this field have increased yearly, with 2010 being a breakthrough point for research in this field. Research has developed rapidly since 2013 and may continue to expand in the next several years. The USA and Japan play leading roles in this field. "SURG ENDOSC", "SURG INNOV", and "J LAPAROENDOSC ADV S" are core journals that publish high-quality literature and the latest developments in this field. Some authors who have a large number of high-quality publications include Ishizawa T and Kokudo N. The current research hotspots in this field are focused on exploring the factors that affect ICG cholangiography and optimization measures.

CONCLUSIONS

In general, the number of documents related to ICG fluorescence cholangiography is growing rapidly, with the USA and Japan being influential countries and China being one of the major producers of these documents. The optimization of this new technology will affect key developments in future research.

Mapping Knowledge Structure and Themes Trends of Osteoporosis in Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Bibliometric Analysis

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disabling disease characterized by chronic inflammation, articular cartilage destruction, and reduced bone mass. Multiple studies have revealed that the development of osteoporosis in rheumatoid arthritis (RA; ORA) patients could be led to a reduced quality of life and increased healthcare costs. Nevertheless, no attempt has been made to analyze the field of ORA research with the bibliometric method. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the knowledge structure and theme trends in the field of ORA research from a bibliometric perspective.

Methods: Articles and reviews regarding ORA from 1998 to 2021 were identified from the Web of Science database. An online bibliometric platform, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer software were used to generate visualization knowledge maps including co-authorship, co-citation, and co-occurrence analysis. SPSS, R, and Microsoft Excel software were used to conduct curve fitting and correlation analysis, and to analyze quantitative indicators, such as publication and citation counts, h-index, and journal citation reports.

Results: A total of 1,081 papers with 28,473 citations were identified. Publications were mainly concentrated in North America, Western Europe, and Eastern Asia. Economic strength is an important factor affecting scientific output. The United States contributed the most publications (213) with the highest h-index value (46) as of September 14, 2021. Diakonhjemmet Hospital and professor Haugeberg G were the most prolific institution and influential authors, respectively. Journal of Rheumatology was the most productive journal concerning ORA research. According to the burst references, “anti-citrullinated protein antibodies” and “preventing joint destruction” have been recognized as the hot research issues in the domain. The keywords co-occurrence analysis identified “teriparatide,” “interleukin-6,” “Wnt,” and “vertebral fractures” as the important future research directions.

Conclusion: This was the first bibliometric study comprehensively summarizing the trends and development of ORA research. Our findings could offer practical sources for scholars to understand the key information in this field, and identify the potential research frontiers and hot directions in the near future.
