Abstract
Uric acid (UA) levels in blood serum have been associated with hypertension, indicating a potential causal relationship between high serum UA levels and the progression of hypertension. Therefore, the reduction of serum UA level is considered a potential strategy for lowering and mitigating blood pressure. If an individual is at risk of developing or already manifesting elevated blood pressure, this intervention could be an integral part of a comprehensive treatment plan. By addressing hyperuricaemia, practitioners may subsidize the optimization of blood pressure regulation, which illustrates the importance of addressing UA levels as a valuable strategy within the broader context of hypertension management. In this analysis, we outlined the operational principles of effective xanthine oxidase inhibitors for the treatment of hyperuricaemia and hypertension, along with an exploration of the contribution of nanotechnology to this field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No studies have been conducted to analyze the impact of serum uric acid (UA) levels on the outcome of atrial fibrillation (AF) patients. We aimed to evaluate the effect of hyperuricemia (HU) on the prognosis of AF. METHODS AND RESULTS Consecutive patients who consulted our emergency room for an episode of AF, already known or newly diagnosed, between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2015 (n=2017) were enrolled. After applying exclusion criteria, 1772 patients were included. Serum UA levels in the 6 months before or after the date of the episode were recorded and classified into quartiles: Q1 (n=443) serum UA levels <4.6 mg/dL; Q2 (n=430) 4.6-5.6 mg/dL; Q3 (n=435) 5.7-6.9 mg/dL; and Q4 (n=464) ≥7 mg/dL. Two groups were differentiated: patients without HU (Q1-Q3) and those with HU (Q4). The mean follow-up was 3.7 ± 1.4 years. The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality during follow-up. Mortality during follow-up in the bivariate analysis was higher (p < 0.001) in patients with HU (52.1 %) compared to those without it (35.3 %), confirming multivariate Cox analysis of HU as an independent risk factor for death [hazard ratio 1.89 (1.59-2.25)]. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed a shorter survival time in patients with HU (log-rank test, p<0.001). Cox analysis confirmed significant differences in the risk of heart failure (30 % vs. 22 %) in patients with HU. CONCLUSIONS HU is independently associated with an increased risk for all-cause mortality and hospitalization for heart failure in patients with AF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The potential influence of left atrial size on the relationship between uric acid and atrial fibrillation has not been fully investigated. This study aims to evaluate the interaction effect of left atrial size on the association between uric acid and atrial fibrillation in patients with coronary artery disease. METHODS AND RESULTS This retrospective cohort study, conducted from January 2018 to October 2022, included 2004 patients undergoing Drug-Eluting Stent implantation for coronary artery disease. Utilizing logistic regression models with the product of left atrial enlargement (LAE) and uric acid, interaction effects were assessed. Among the participants, 383 had LAE, and 159 experienced atrial fibrillation. After adjusting for covariates, continuous uric acid levels were associated with an increased risk of atrial fibrillation in patients without LAE (OR:1.631, 95% CI: 1.284-2.072), but not in those with LAE (OR:1.069, 95% CI: 0.848-1.348). A significant interaction of uric acid levels was observed between groups with and without LAE (p = 0.046). Restricted cubic spline curves indicated a J-shaped relationship between uric acid and atrial fibrillation in the absence of LAE. However, the association between uric acid levels and atrial fibrillation in the LAE group remained unchanged with increasing uric acid levels. CONCLUSION The study suggested that left atrial size modified the association between uric acid and atrial fibrillation in patients with coronary artery disease. Uric acid serves as a potential biomarker for atrial fibrillation risk, especially in individuals without LAE.

Abstract
Purpose The association between serum uric acid (SUA) and atrial fibrillation (AF) has been widely focused on and studied in recent years. However, the exact association between SUA and AF is unclear, and the effect of gender on the association between SUA levels and AF has been controversial. This study aimed to investigate the association between SUA levels and non-valvular AF (NVAF) and the potential effect of gender on it. Patients and Methods A total of 866 NVAF patients (463 males, age 69.44 ± 8.07 years) and 646 sex-matched control patients in sinus rhythm, with no history of arrhythmia were included in this study. t-test, ANOVA, and chi-square test were used for baseline data analysis. The receiver operating characteristic curve, logistic regression and Pearson correlation analysis were used for correlation analysis. Results Compared to controls, NVAF patients exhibited higher SUA (P<0.001). After adjusting for confounders of NVAF, SUA remained significantly associated with NVAF, regardless of gender (OR= 1.31, 95% CI 1.18-1.43, P<0.001). SUA demonstrated higher predictability and sensitivity in predicting the occurrence of female NVAF compared to male (area under the curve was 0.68 (95% CI 0.64-0.72, P<0.001), sensitivity 87.3%), with the optimal cut-off point identified as 5.72 mg/dL. Furthermore, SUA levels correlated with APOA1, Scr and NT-proBNP in NVAF patients. SUA levels varied significantly among NVAF subtypes. Conclusion High SUA levels were independently associated with NVAF, regardless of gender. SUA exhibited higher predictability and sensitivity in predicting the occurrence of NVAF in females compared to males. High SUA levels may affect other NVAF-related factors and participate in the pathophysiological process of NVAF.

Abstract
Objective While urate-lowering therapy (ULT) is linked to increased cardioprotective benefits on primary prevention of cardiovascular events such myocardial infarction or heart failure, little is known regarding their effects on arrhythmia risk. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between incident arrhythmias and ULT. Methods We searched MEDLINE and Embase from inception to May 2023. Included studies were randomized controlled trials and cohort studies that compared the risk of cardiac arrhythmias among ULT users with non-ULT users. Results A total of 12,420 patients from five studies were analyzed, comprising 7,359 subjects in the ULT group and 5,061 subjects in the non-ULT group. Our results showed that ULT users had significant reductions in the risk of arrhythmias (pooled relative risk [RR] 0.82, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.74~0.92, p<0.001, I2=0.0%) compared to non-ULT users. Subgroup analysis did not show that ULT users had a significant reduced risk of atrial fibrillation (pooled RR 0.76, 95% CI 0.54~1.05, p=0.096 with I2=15.4%) compared to non-ULT users. Conclusion ULT is associated with lower risk of overall arrhythmias. Further studies are warranted to confirm our findings.

Abstract
Objective Myocardial infarction (MI) is linked to an imbalance in the supply and demand of blood oxygen in the heart muscles. Beta-blockers and calcium antagonists are just two of the common medications used to treat MI. However, these have reportedly been shown to be either ineffective or to have undesirable side effects. Extract of Ginkgo biloba leaves (GBE), a Chinese herbal product offers special compatibility benefits in therapeutic settings relating to inflammatory diseases and oxidative stress. In order to better understand how GBE affects MI in rats insulted by isoprenaline (ISO), the current study was designed. Methods The heart weight index, serum lipid profile, cardiac marker enzymes, endogenous antioxidants [catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), nitrites and malondialdehyde (MDA)], inflammatory mediators [tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6)], immunohistochemical expressions of B-cell lymphoma factor-2 (Bcl-2), extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2), and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and histopathological analysis were used to assess the cardioprotective properties of GBE. Results The findings showed that GBE effectively attenuated myocardial infarction by boosting the body's natural antioxidant defense system and reducing the release of inflammatory cytokines as well as heart injury marker enzymes. The expression of Bcl-2, ERK1/2 and mTOR was increased while the histomorphological alterations were reversed. Conclusion The cardioprotective effects of GBE may be due to a mechanism involving increased Bcl-2/mTOR/ERK1/2/Na+, K+-ATPase activity.

Abstract
The crosstalk of the heart with distant organs such as the lung, liver, gut, and kidney has been intensively approached lately. The kidney is involved in (1) the production of systemic relevant products, such as renin, as part of the most essential vasoregulatory system of the human body, and (2) in the clearance of metabolites with systemic and organ effects. Metabolic residue accumulation during kidney dysfunction is known to determine cardiovascular pathologies such as endothelial activation/dysfunction, atherosclerosis, cardiomyocyte apoptosis, cardiac fibrosis, and vascular and valvular calcification, leading to hypertension, arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, and cardiomyopathies. However, this review offers an overview of the uremic metabolites and details their signaling pathways involved in cardiorenal syndrome and the development of heart failure. A holistic view of the metabolites, but more importantly, an exhaustive crosstalk of their known signaling pathways, is important for depicting new therapeutic strategies in the cardiovascular field.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of Dahuang Mudan Tang (, DHMD) and allopurinol on the treatment of chronic kidney disease staged G1-G3b patients with hyperuricemia and to provide novel insights into the clinical management of chronic kidney disease complications. METHODS A total of 80 chronic kidney patients staged G1-G3b with hyperuricemia were randomly grouped to receive single allopurinol treatment (control) and combined treatment with DHMD (treated) for 8 weeks. The kidney function and proteinuria indicators of patients were compared between pre-and post-treatment. The oxidative stress and inflammation responses were evaluated by corresponding indicators and cytokines. The clinical efficiency rate and adverse reaction events were also summarized to assess the therapeutic efficiency and safety. RESULTS The kidney function and proteinuria of enrolled patients were alleviated after their therapies, behaved as the increasing estimated glomerular filtration rate and decreasing serum creatinine, serum uric acid, urea nitrogen, 24 h urine protein levels. On the other hand, the malondialdehyde level and pro-inflammation cytokines were suppressed by the therapies, and the superoxide dismutase was found to be significantly enhanced. Patients in the treated groups showed a better recovery in kidney function, proteinuria, oxidative stress, and inflammation response. Moreover, patients in the treated group showed a higher efficiency rate (95%) and fewer adverse reaction events (5%). CONCLUSIONS The combination of allopurinol with DHMD significantly promoted the recovery of chronic kidney disease stage G1-G3b patients with hyperuricemia, which can be considered a novel clinical therapeutic strategy.

Abstract
Purpose Lymphocyte to C-reactive protein ratio (LCR) is a recognized systemic inflammatory marker and novel prognostic indicator for several cancers. This study investigated the relationship between preoperative LCR and new-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Patients and Methods Patients with AMI (n=662) with no history of atrial fibrillation (AF) were enrolled and classified into NOAF and non-NOAF groups based on the occurrence of postoperative NOAF during hospitalization. Logistic regression models were used to analyze NOAF risk factors and to assess the association between preoperative LCR and NOAF incidence. We constructed a new nomogram from the selected NOAF risk factors, and tested its predictive performance, degree of calibration, and clinical utility using receiver operating characteristic and calibration curves, decision curve analysis, and clinical impact curves. Results Overall, 84 (12.7%) patients developed NOAF during hospitalization. The LCR was significantly lower in the NOAF group. Preoperative LCR accurately predicted NOAF after AMI and was correlated with increased NOAF risk. Age, body mass index, diabetes, serum albumin levels, uric acid levels, left atrium (LA) diameter, left ventricular ejection fraction, left circumflex artery stenosis > 50%, and Killip class II status were independent predictors of NOAF after AMI. In addition, a new nomogram combined with LCR was constructed to stratify the risk of NOAF in patients with AMI. The performance of the new nomogram was satisfactory, as shown by the receiver operating characteristic curve, calibration curve, decision curve analysis and clinical impact curve. Conclusion Preoperative LCR was an independent predictor of NOAF in patients with AMI after PCI. The novel nomogram combined with LCR could rapidly and individually identify and treat patients at a high risk of NOAF.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Elevated serum uric acid (SUA) levels have been associated with poor outcome in patients with heart failure (HF). Uric acid is associated with inflammation and microvascular dysfunction, which may differentially affect left ventricular ejection fraction (EF) phenotypes. We aimed to identify the role of SUA across EF phenotypes in hospitalized elderly patients with chronic HF. METHODS We analyzed 1355 elderly patients who were diagnosed with chronic HF. All patients had SUA levels measured within the first 24 h following admission. Patients with left ventricle EF were categorized as having HF with reduced EF (HFrEF, EF < 40%), HF with mid-range EF (HFmrEF, 40%≦LVEF ≦ 49%) or HF with preserved EF (HFpEF, LVEF ≥ 50%). Endpoints were cardiovascular death, HF rehospitalization, and their composite. The median follow-up period was 18 months. RESULTS Compared with the lowest SUA quartile, the highest SUA quartile was significantly associated with the endpoints (adjusted HR: 2.404, 95% CI: 1.178-4.906, P = 0.016; HR: 1.418, 95% CI: 1.021-1.971, P = 0.037; HR: 1.439, 95% CI: 1.049-1.972, P = 0.024, respectively). After model adjustment, a significant association of SUA with cardiovascular death and the composite endpoint persisted among HFrEF and HFmrEF patients in the highest SUA quartile (P < 0.05 for all). CONCLUSIONS In hospitalized elderly patients with chronic HF, SUA is an independent predictor of adverse outcomes, which can be seen in HFrEF and HFmrEF patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND New-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) is a common cardiac arrhythmia observed in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and is associated with worse outcomes. While uric acid has been proposed as a potential biomarker for predicting atrial fibrillation, its association with NOAF in patients with AMI and its incremental discriminative ability when added to the CHA2DS2-VASc score are not well established. METHODS We conducted a retrospective analysis of 1000 consecutive patients with AMI without a history of atrial fibrillation between January 2018 and December 2020. Continuous electrocardiographic monitoring was performed during the patients' hospital stay to detect NOAF. We assessed the predictive ability of the different scoring models using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. In addition, we employed the area under the curve (AUC), integrated discrimination improvement (IDI), and net reclassification improvement (NRI) analyses to assess the incremental discriminative ability of uric acid when added to the CHA2DS2-VASc score. RESULTS Ninety-three patients (9.3%) developed NOAF during hospitalisation. In multivariate regression analyses, the adjusted odds ratio (OR) for NOAF was 1.439 per one standard deviation increase in uric acid level (95% confidence intervals (CI):1.182-1.753, p < 0.001). The ROC curve analysis revealed that the AUC for uric acid was 0.667 (95% CI:0.601-0.719), while the AUC for the CHA2DS2-VASc score was 0.678 (95% CI:0.623-0.734). After integrating the uric acid variable into the CHA2DS2-VASc score, the combined score yielded an improved AUC of 0.737 (95% CI:0.709-0.764, p = 0.009). Furthermore, there was a significant improvement in both IDI and NRI, indicating an incremental improvement in discriminative ability (IDI = 0.041, p < 0.001; NRI = 0.627, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Our study suggests that uric acid level is an independent risk factor for the development of NOAF after AMI. Furthermore, the incorporation of uric acid into the CHA2DS2-VASc score significantly improves the discriminative ability of the score in identifying patients at high risk for NOAF.

Abstract
The white epidermis of silkworms is due to the accumulation of uric acid crystals. Abnormal silkworm uric acid metabolism decreases uric acid production, leading to a transparent or translucent phenotype. The oily silkworm op50 is a mutant strain with a highly transparent epidermis derived from the p50 strain. It shows more susceptibility to Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV) infection than the wild type; however, the underlying mechanism is unknown. This study analysed the changes in 34 metabolites in p50 and op50 at different times following BmNPV infection based on comparative metabolomics. The differential metabolites were mainly clustered in six metabolic pathways. Of these, the uric acid pathway was identified as critical for resistance in silkworms, as feeding with inosine significantly enhanced larval resistance compared to other metabolites and modulated other metabolic pathways. Additionally, the increased level of resistance to BmNPV in inosine-fed silkworms was associated with the regulation of apoptosis, which is mediated by the reactive oxygen species produced during uric acid synthesis. Furthermore, feeding the industrial strain Jingsong (JS) with inosine significantly increased the level of larval resistance to BmNPV, indicating its potential application in controlling the virus in sericulture. These results lay the foundation for clarifying the resistance mechanism of silkworms to BmNPV and provide new strategies and methods for the biological control of pests.

Abstract
Background and aims Studies showed that elevated preoperative serum uric acid(SUA) levels are associated with recurrence of atrial fibrillation(AF) after catheter ablation. UA:creatinine ratio(UCR - UA normalised for renal function) has appeared as a new biomarker and is considered to reflect endogenous UA levels preferably because it eliminates the influence of renal function. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between UCR and recurrence of AF after catheter ablation. Methods and results A total of 233 consecutive patients with symptomatic, drug-refractory AF underwent catheter ablation. All participants underwent history-taking, physical examination and blood biochemistry analysis at baseline. After a mean follow-up of 23.99 ± 0.76 months, recurrence ratios for each UCR quartile (from lowest quartile to highest) were 10.9%, 23.6%, 23.6%, and 41.8%, respectively (P = 0.005). Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that UCR was an independent predictor of AF recurrence (HR 1.217, 95%CI 1.008-1.468; P = 0.041). Subgroup analysis showed that UCR was associated with AF recurrence in paroxysmal AF (HR 1.426, 95% CI 1.092-1.8608; P = 0.009) and in male patients (HR 1.407, 95% CI 1.015-1.950; P = 0.04). A cut-off point of 4.475 for the UCR had sensitivity of 65.5% and specificity of 59.6% in predicting AF recurrence (P = 0.001). Conclusion Our results demonstrate that elevated preoperative UCR is associated with recurrence of AF after catheter ablation, and it indicate UCR maybe a predictive factor for the recurrence of AF.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Engeletin is a potent natural compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, its role in cardiac remodeling remains unclear. Herein, the aim of the present study was to explore the effects of engeletin on cardiac structural and electrical remodeling and its underlying mechanism. METHODS and results: A cardiac remodeling mice model using isoproterenol (ISO)-induced myocardial fibrosis was constructed and divided into the following four groups: control group; engeletin group; ISO group; engeletin + ISO group. Our results demonstrated that engeletin alleviated ISO-induced myocardial fibrosis and dysfunction. Moreover, engeletin significantly prolonged the QT and corrected QT (QTc) intervals, effective refractory period (ERP), and action potential duration (APD), and enhanced connexin protein 43 (Cx43) and ion channel expressions, thereby decreasing ventricular fibrillation (VF) susceptibility. Additionally, dihydroethidium staining illustrated that engeletin decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Of note, engeletin also increased the levels of superoxide dismutase and glutathione and decreased the activity of malondialdehyde and L-Glutathione oxidized. Moreover, engeletin significantly increased the expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1). Furthermore, in vitro administration of an Nrf2 inhibitor abolished the anti-oxidant properties of engeletin. CONCLUSION Engeletin ameliorated cardiac structural and electrical remodeling, ion channel remodeling, and oxidative stress induced by ISO in mice, thereby reducing VF susceptibility. These effects may be attributed to the anti-oxidant properties of engeletin associated with the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway.

Abstract
Background The role of uric acid is gaining increasing importance in the evaluation of cardiovascular disease, but its relationship with atrial fibrillation (AF) is unclear. This study aims to investigate the association between uric acid levels and risk of new-onset AF. Methods and Results A total of 339 604 individuals 30 to 60 years of age and free from cardiovascular disease at baseline (1985-1996) in the Swedish AMORIS (Apolipoprotein-Mortality Risk) cohort were followed until December 31, 2019 for incident AF. Cox regression models were used to examine the association between uric acid and AF, adjusting for potential confounders and stratifying by incident cardiovascular disease. Over a mean follow-up of 25.9 years, 46 516 incident AF cases occurred. Compared with the lowest uric acid quartile, each of the upper 3 quartiles were associated with an increased risk of AF in a dose-response manner. Adjusted hazard ratios were 1.09 (95% CI, 1.06-1.12) for second quartile, 1.19 (95% CI, 1.16-1.23) for third quartile, and 1.45 (95% CI, 1.41-1.49) for fourth quartile. The association was similar among individuals with and without incident hypertension, diabetes, heart failure, or coronary heart disease. The dose-response pattern was further supported in a subsample of individuals with repeated measurements of uric acid. Conclusions Elevated uric acid was associated with an increased risk of AF, not only among people with cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular risk factors but also among those without. Future investigations are needed to examine whether lowering uric acid is relevant for AF prevention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have shown both dysglycaemia and hyperuricemia are associated with an increased risk of atrial fibrillation (AF), while the relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and AF in different fasting glucose patterns (FBG) is unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the association between SUA and AF in different FBG patterns. METHODS A total of 1840 patients in this case-control study were enrolled, including 920 AF patients and 920 controls. Patients were divided into three groups according to the different FBG patterns: normoglycemic, impaired fasting glucose (IFG), and diabetes mellitus (DM). Multivariate logistic regression models were performed to evaluate the relationship between SUA and AF in different FBG patterns. Pearson correlation analysis was used to explore the correlation between SUA and metabolic factors. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve models indicated the diagnostic efficiency of SUA for diagnosing AF. RESULTS SUA was independently associated with AF after adjusting for all confounding factors in different FBG patterns(normoglycemic: OR=1.313, 95% CI:1.120-1.539; IFG: OR=1.386, 95% CI:1.011-1.898; DM: OR=1.505, 95% CI:1.150-1.970). Pearson's correlation analysis suggested that SUA in AF patients was correlated with several different metabolic factors in different FBG patterns (p<0.05). ROC curve analysis showed that SUA in the normoglycemic group combined with CHD and APOB [AUC: 0.906 (95% CI: 0.888-0.923)], in the IFG group combined with CHD and Scr [AUC: 0.863 (95% CI: 0.820-0.907)], in the DM group combined with CHD and SBP [AUC: 0.858 (95% CI: 0.818-0.898)] had the highest AUC for predicting AF. CONCLUSION Findings implied a significant association between SUA and AF in different FBG patterns and provide specific models combined with other factors (CHD, APOB, SCr, SBP), which might contribute to the diagnosis of AF.

Abstract
Background Hyperuricemia (HUA) is a major public health issue with a high prevalence worldwide. Wuling San (WLS) is an effective treatment for HUA. However, the active compounds and the related mechanism are unclear. In this study, we aimed to explore the active compounds and the underlying pharmacological mechanisms of WLS against HUA. Methods First, a network pharmacology approach was used to detect active compounds of WLS, and potential targets and signaling pathways involved in the treatment of HUA were predicted. Then, a molecular docking strategy was used to predict the affinity between active compounds and key targets. Finally, to verify the prediction, the HUA rat model was established. Results 49 active compounds with 108 common targets were obtained. Besides, cerevisterol, luteolin, ergosterol peroxide, beta-sitosterol, and sitosterol were identified as key active compounds. In PPI analysis, TNF, IL6, CASP3, PPARG, STAT3, and other 12 core targets were obtained. GO enrichment analysis indicated that WLS was likely to interfere with oxidative stress in the treatment of HUA, and KEGG enrichment analysis indicated multiple inflammation-related signaling pathways possibly involved in the treatment of HUA by WLS, including TNF, and NOD-like receptor, HIF-1, PI3K-Akt, and IL-17 signaling pathways. The results of molecular docking indicated that the active compounds had good binding properties to their key targets. In the validation experiments, WLS significantly reduced the levels of serum uric acid (SUA) and serum malondialdehyde (MDA). Moreover, WLS not only significantly increased the levels of total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), but also inhibited the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Conclusion In the present study, we demonstrate that WLS has multicomponent, multitarget, and multi-pathway properties in the treatment of HUA. Its potential capability to reduce SUA could be ascribed to oxidative stress improvement and inflammation inhibition.

Abstract
Objective: Despite improvements in the technology of catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF), recurrences are still a major problem, even after a successful procedure. The uric acid/albumin ratio (UAR), which is an inexpensive and simple laboratory parameter, has recently been introduced in the literature as a predictor of adverse cardiovascular events. Hence, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the UAR and AF recurrence after catheter ablation. Methods: A total of 170 patients who underwent successful catheter ablation for AF were included. The primary outcome was the late recurrence after treatment. The recurrence (+) and recurrence (−) groups were compared for clinical, laboratory and procedural characteristics as well as the predictors of recurrence assessed by regression analysis. Results: In our study population, 53 (26%) patients developed AF recurrence after catheter ablation. Mean UAR was higher in the recurrence (+) group compared to recurrence (−) group (2.4 ± 0.9 vs. 1.8 ± 0.7, p < 0.01). In multivariable regression analysis, left atrial diameter (HR: 1.08, 95% CI: 1.01−1.16, p = 0.01) and UAR (HR:1.36, 95% CI: 1.06−1.75, p = 0.01) were found to be independent predictors of recurrence. In ROC analysis, the UAR > 1.67 predicted recurrence with a sensitivity of 77% and a specificity of 57% (AUC 0.68, p < 0.01). Conclusion: For the first time in the literature, the UAR were found to be correlated independently with AF recurrence after catheter ablation.

Abstract
Sorting nexins (SNXs) are involved in sorting the protein cargo within the endolysosomal system. Recently, several studies have shown the role of SNXs in cardiovascular pathology. SNXs exert both physiologic and pathologic functions in the cardiovascular system by regulating protein sorting and trafficking, maintaining protein homeostasis, and participating in multiple signaling pathways. SNX deficiency results in blood pressure response to dopamine 5 receptor [D5R] stimulation. SNX knockout protected against atherosclerosis lesions by suppressing foam cell formation. Moreover, SNXs can act as endogenous anti-arrhythmic agents via maintenance of calcium homeostasis. Overexpression SNXs also can reduce cardiac fibrosis in atrial fibrillation. The SNX-STAT3 interaction in cardiac cells promoted heart failure. SNXs may have the potential to act as a pharmacological target against specific cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Background Hypoalbuminemia is linked to the emergence of cardiovascular events. However, there is an unclear association between serum albumin (ALB) and gender in paroxysmal AF patients. This retrospective study aimed to explore the association between ALB levels and paroxysmal AF by gender in a Chinese population. Methods This study included patients with paroxysmal AF who were hospitalized consecutively in China from January 2019 to September 2021. Controls with sinus rhythm and without paroxysmal AF were matched (2:1) to cases by gender and age. Pearson correlation analysis was used to study the correlation between ALB and blood lipid profiles, multivariate regression models were performed to investigate the association between ALB and paroxysmal AF. Results There were 305 patients with paroxysmal AF and 610 patients with controls included in this study. Low ALB in male with AF patients were significantly associated with paroxysmal AF (OR = 0.889, 95% CI 0.832–0.950). ALB was positively correlated with triglyceride (TG) (r = 0.212, p < 0.001), total cholesterol (TC) (r = 0.381, p = 0.002), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (r = 0.263, p < 0.001), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (r = 0.329, p < 0.001). Conclusion Low ALB in male patients is significantly associated with paroxysmal AF in a Chinese population. Monitoring for hypoalbuminemia in men might help reduce the incidence of paroxysmal AF.

Abstract
Coffee, next to water, is the most consumed drink in the world. Coffee contains over 1000 chemical compounds, the most popular of which are caffeine, chlorogenic acid, kahweol, cafestol and trigonelline. Numerous studies have shown the beneficial effects of coffee on the cardiovascular system, nervous system, digestive system and kidneys. Due to the high incidence of cardiac arrhythmias, especially atrial fibrillation, the influence of coffee consumption on arrhythmogenesis remains a controversial and clinically important issue. Many mechanisms by which coffee can increase and decrease the risk of arrhythmias have been described. Habitual consumption of moderate amounts of coffee seems to lead to less arrhythmias, which is reflected in the results of many clinical trials and meta-analyzes. This review summarizes the mechanisms of coffee action on the heart muscle and the results of the most recent important clinical trials assessing the impact of coffee consumption on the risk of various cardiac arrhythmias.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia is a common metabolic disease and is one of the factors that could induce chronic kidney disease (CKD). Geniposide (GEN) is a typical natural iridoid glucoside compound with a series of biological activities, but the poor bioavailability of GEN limits its clinical application. In this context, the pharmacological activity of the geniposide-phospholipid complex (GEN-PLC) in ameliorating posthyperuricemia CKD was evaluated by in vitro and in vivo experiments in this study. In vitro cell experiments showed that GEN-PLC treatment markedly decreased inflammatory cytokine levels and reactive oxygen species levels compared with those of GEN in uric acid-treated HKC cells. In vivo research results confirmed that a high concentration of uric acid could cause CKD by increasing inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species in hyperuricemic mice. At the same time, GEN-PLC could regulate the PI3K/AKT/NF-κB and Keap1/Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathways to effectively inhibit the inflammatory response and oxidative stress, thereby ameliorating posthyperuricemia CKD, and the therapeutic effect was better than that of GEN. In addition, the preparation technology of GEN-PLC was optimized, and the physiochemical analysis explained the intermolecular interactions of the two components. Based on the research results, GEN-PLC could enhance the bioavailability of GEN and become a promising candidate for clinical drug development.

Abstract
Uric acid (UA) is the end product of purine degradation in humans. It promotes inflammation via activation of pro-inflammatory cytokines and increases oxidative stress. The serum uric acid level has emerged as an independent risk factor of cardiovascular disease such as ventricular arrhythmias (VA). Here we had done a systematic review to assess the association between serum UA levels and the occurrence of VA. This systematic review included a total of four clinical studies with 99.383 patients for analysis. The scientific quality of all four studies was good. Three studies showed that serum uric acid levels were associated with VA in many populations. In contrast, one study with a large sample size evaluated that serum uric acid increases premature ventricle contraction prevalence. A significant association between serum uric acid level and VA was found in four studies (p<0.01; p<0.101; p=0.002; p=0.008). In conclusion, this systematic review shows an association between serum UA levels and VA.

Abstract
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that have adverse effects on human health. However, the long-term health effects and potential mechanism of neonatal exposure to PCBs are still unclear. In this study, nursing male mice exposed to PCB138 at 0.5, 5, and 50 μg/kg body weight (bw) from postnatal day (PND) 3 to PND 21 exhibited increased serum uric acid levels and liver uric acid synthase activity at 210 days of age. We also found an increased kidney somatic index in the 50 μg/kg group and kidney fibrosis in the 5 and 50 μg/kg groups. Mechanistically, PCB138 induced mitochondrial dysfunction and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, which might have led to inflammatory responses, such as activation of the NF-κB (nuclear factor kappa-B) and NLRP3 (NOD-like receptor protein 3) pathways. The inflammatory response might regulate renal fibrosis and hypertrophy. In summary, this study reports a long-term effect of neonatal PCB exposure on uric acid metabolism and secondary nephrotoxicity and clarifies the underlying mechanism. Our work also indicates that early life pollutant exposure may be an important cause of diseases later in life.

Abstract
PURPOSE We launched a retrospective cohort study to explore the interactions among serum uric acid (UA), urine UA, and stone types. METHODS Clinical characteristics of urolithiasis patients in Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital from October 2015 to August 2017 were retrospectively collected. Participants were categorized according to the quartiles of SUA and UUA respectively. Logistic regression model was built to identify the relationship between stone composition and UA level. Cubic spline was fitted to explore the correlation between 24-h urine UA and serum UA. RESULTS 718 hospitalized patients (51.1 ± 14.3 years, male 63.4%) with urinary calculi were included. Higher serum UA is associated with male, alcohol use, multiple serum and urine electrolytes (e.g. potassium, chloride, calcium, phosphorus), and lower estimated glomerular filtration rate. The risk of UA stone and carbonate apatite stone was associated with serum UA while the risk of calcium oxalate (CaOx) stone and ammonium magnesium hexahydrate (AMH) was dependent on urine UA. In the unadjusted model (Model 1), higher risks of UA stones were observed in the third quartile (OR 3.26, 95% CIs 1.63-6.53, P = 0.001) and the fourth quartile (OR 3.55, 95% CIs 1.78-7.08, P < 0.001) of serum UA compared with the first quartile. The risks of carbonate apatite stone were lowered in the third (OR 0.48, 95% CIs 0.31-0.73, P = 0.001) and fourth quartile (OR 0.40, 95% CIs 0.42-0.98, P = 0.042) of serum UA. The risk of CaOx stone was increased in the fourth quartile (OR 2.14, 95% CIs 1.15-3.99, P = 0.017) while the risk of AMH stone was decreased in the third (OR 0.46, 95% CIs 0.22-0.94, P = 0.034) and fourth quartile (OR 0.35, 95% CIs 0.16-0.78, P = 0.009) of urine UA. The elevated risks of UA stones in high levels of serum UA were demonstrated in the adjusted model (Model 2). An M-shaped association was found between serum UA and urine UA in our population. CONCLUSIONS Serum UA and urine UA might cast different impact on urinary calculus composition. Proper control of the parameters should be considered based on different predisposing factors in individual patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between uric acid and patients with type 1 (NT1) remains unclear. UA may contribute to the development of depression. Depression is also common in NT1. Our study aimed to evaluate serum levels of UA, creatinine, and UA/Cr ratio, and examine the association of serum UA levels with psychological status in NT1 patients. METHODS This is a case-control study conducted on 48 patients diagnosed with NT1 and 40 healthy controls (HC). The 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating (HAMD-17) was used as screening tools for depressive symptoms for patients with NT1. Serum UA, creatinine, and UA/Cr ratio were measured. In addition, the correction of UA status and scores of depressive scales was statistically analyzed. RESULTS Approximately 70% of all subjects with NT1 had depression or depressive symptoms compared with the HC group, the serum UA levels and UA/Cr ratios were higher in patients with NT1 (p < 0.05). In addition, there was a negative correlation between UA levels and HAMD-17 scores in NT1 patients (r = -0.334; p = 0.020). CONCLUSION We found that serum UA levels were higher in patients with NT1, and the serum UA levels were negatively correlated with depressive symptom scores. Further well-designed prospective cohort studies are needed to determine the causality of the correlation and to further clarify the pathophysiological mechanisms of UA in NT1 patients.

Abstract
A large number of studies suggest that uric acid (UA) is related to the occurrence, complications, and prognosis of atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the guidelines did not clearly elaborate on this issue. The current research results need to be summarized to analyze the association between UA and AF. This study found that in the current clinical research on the relationship between UA and AF, studies mainly focus on the development or complications of AF. A lot of repetitive work does not deepen awareness of this question. In contrast, studies investigating the effects of UA-lowering therapy on the management of AF are limited. The only reports deny the protective effect of UA-lowering therapy. For now, we suggest that UA is close to the occurrence and progression of AF; therefore, it may have important significance as a clinical marker. The role of UA-lowering therapy in the management of AF is one of the next key issues to be explored. It will be a meaningful topic to focus on the latest research on AF ablation and to conduct a secondary analysis to explore the prognostic impact of UA on the latest treatment methods for AF. Multiomics techniques may allow us to have a deeper understanding of the role of UA in AF management in the future.

Abstract
Association between hyperuricemia (HUA) and atrial fibrillation (AF) remains unclear. We reviewed clinical evidence and aimed to determine whether hyperuricemia leads to a high risk of atrial fibrillation. Most studies were identified through databases online. Keywords used in literature search were hyperuricemia, atrial fibrillation, metabolic disorder, endocrine disorder, or uric acid. Three studies were provided by the authors. Literature search was performed without any data or language restriction. Observational studies, including cohort studies and cross-sectional studies, were used. Study type should be clearly defined. Cross-sectional studies should clearly introduce the sources of epidemiological data. Studies were excluded if with too many complications unrelated to AF enrolled. Data were independently extracted by three individuals. Data synthesis was conducted by R version 4.1.2. Prevalence of atrial fibrillation was the main outcome. Results of meta-analysis were presented as risk ratio (RR) for different prevalence of AF between individuals with and without HUA. All data included were obtained after follow-up work is completed. Data from 608,810 participants showed that patients with hyperuricemia were easier to suffer from atrial fibrillation (RR, 2.42; 95% CI, 1.24-3.03). And the meta-regressions suggested growth of linear proportion between the ratio of current drinkers and hyperuricemia (QM = 41.0069, P < 0.001). Subgroup analyses demonstrated consistent results in different countries. And design of the observational studies brought heterogeneity, but no uncertainties. Patients with hyperuricemia were easier to suffer from atrial fibrillation. Treatment of hyperuricemia or gout may bring potential benefits for AF patients.

Abstract
Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with high risk of stroke preventable by timely initiation of anticoagulation. Currently available screening tools based on ECG are not optimal due to inconvenience and high costs. Aim of this study was to study the diagnostic value of apelin for AF in patients with high risk of stroke. Methods: We designed a multicenter, matched-cohort study. The population consisted of three study groups: a healthy control group (34 patients) and two matched groups of 60 patients with high risk of stroke (AF and non-AF group). Apelin levels were examined from peripheral blood. Results: Apelin was significantly lower in AF group compared to non-AF group (0.694 ± 0.148 vs. 0.975 ± 0.458 ng/ml, p = 0.001) and control group (0.982 ± 0.060 ng/ml, p < 0.001), respectively. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis of apelin as a predictor of AF scored area under the curve (AUC) of 0.658. Apelin's concentration of 0.969 [ng/ml] had sensitivity = 0.966 and specificity = 0.467. Logistic regression based on manual feature selection showed that only apelin and NT-proBNP were independent predictors of AF. Logistic regression based on selection from bivariate analysis showed that only apelin was an independent predictor of AF. A logistic regression model using repeated stratified K-Fold cross-validation strategy scored an AUC of 0.725 ± 0.131. Conclusions: Our results suggest that apelin might be used to rule out AF in patients with high risk of stroke.

Abstract
Atmospheric pressure cold plasma has shown multiple biological effects of anti-bacteria and anti-cancer. In this study, the effect of atmospheric pressure cold plasma on respiratory inflammation and oxidant stress is explored. Tunicamycin was used to stimulate human bronchial epithelial cells (HBECs) and A549 cells for inflammatory response and oxidative stress, followed by atmospheric pressure cold plasma treatment. For HBECs and A549 cells, atmospheric pressure cold plasma was able to alleviate tunicamycin-induced cell proliferation inhibition, inflammation and oxidant stress, and enhance nuclear factor-erythroid-2-related factor 2 (NRF2) pathway activation. Moreover, NRF2/ARE (anti-oxidant response elements) pathway was involved in the regulation of atmospheric pressure cold plasma on tunicamycin-induced oxidative stress. These results suggest the positive effect of atmospheric pressure cold plasma on inflammation and oxidant stress of respiratory system, indicating the therapeutic potential of atmospheric pressure cold plasma for respiratory diseases.
