Emerging Trends and Hot Spots of Electrical Impedance Tomography Applications in Clinical Lung Monitoring

Research trends on acupuncture for neuropathic pain: A bibliometric analysis from 1979 to 2023

BACKGROUND

Acupuncture has drawn increasing attention as a complementary and alternative therapy for neuropathic pain (NP). The present study aimed to summarize the current status and research trends on acupuncture for NP over the past several decades.

METHODS

The publications on acupuncture for NP in the database of Web of Science Core Collection from 1979 to 2023 were searched. VOSviewer (1.6.15) and CiteSpace software (5.5.R2) were applied to identify active authors, journals, countries and institutions, co-cited references and hot keywords.

RESULTS

A total of 642 publications were finally included, and the quantitative trend of annual publications on acupuncture for NP have shown overall upward from 1979 to 2023. Peoples R China was the most productive and influential country, while Kyung Hee University from South Korea was both the first in publications and citations. Fang JQ ranked the first productive author and Han JS was the first 1 among the co-cited authors. The first productive journal was Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, while the first co-cited journal was Pain. The high-frequency keywords were divided into 9 clusters, and the frontier topic focused on "Chronic pain".

CONCLUSION

This present study visually showed the research status and trends of acupuncture for NP from 1979 to 2023 on the basis of bibliometric analysis, which may in some way help researcher discovery and explore some new research directions and ideas in the future.

Global trends in research of pseudomyxoma peritonei: a bibliometric and visualization analysis

Objective

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) was a complex disease that had attracted increasing attention. However, there had been no bibliometric analysis of this disease so far. This study aimed to explore the current situation and frontier trend of PMP through bibliometric and visualization analysis, and to indicate new directions for future research.

Methods

The original research articles and reviews related to the PMP research were downloaded from Web of Science Core Collection on September 11, 2023. CiteSpace (6.2.R4) and VOSviewer(1.6.18) were used to perform bibliometric analysis of the publications, and establish the knowledge map. The data collected was analyzed using the Online Analysis Platform of Bibliometric to evaluate the cooperation of countries in this field.

Results

We identified 1449 original articles and reviews on PMP published between 1998 and 2023. The number of publications on PMP increased continuously. The United States, the United Kingdom and China were the top contributors. The most productive organization was the MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Sugarbaker, Paul H. was the most prolific author and the most cited. Keyword analysis showed that "Pseudomyxoma peritonei", "cancer", "cytoreductive surgery", and "hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy" were the most common keywords. The earliest and latest used keywords were "mucinous tumors" and "impact", respectively. "classification", "cytoreductive surgery", "appendiceal" were the top 3 strongest citation bursts. The reference "Carr NJ, 2016, AM J SURG PATHOL" had the highest co-citations.

Conclusion

This bibliometric analysis showed an increasing trend in literature related to PMP. The research trends and hotspots identified in this study could guide the future research directions in this field, in order to promote the development of PMP.

[Research progress on electrical impedance tomography in pulmonary perfusion]

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is an emerging technology for real-time monitoring based on the impedance differences of different tissues and organs in the human body. It has been initially applied in clinical research as well as disease diagnosis and treatment. Lung perfusion refers to the blood flow perfusion function of lung tissue, and the occurrence and development of many diseases are closely related to lung perfusion. Therefore, real-time monitoring of lung perfusion is particularly important. The application and development of EIT further promote the monitoring of lung perfusion, and related research has made great progress. This article reviews the principles of EIT imaging, lung perfusion imaging methods, and their clinical applications in recent years, with the aim of providing assistance to clinical and scientific researchers.

Research Trends and Hotspots of Medical Electrical Impedance Tomography Algorithms: A Bibliometric Analysis From 1987 to 2021

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a gradually maturing medical imaging technique that relies on computational algorithms for reconstructing and visualizing internal conductivity distributions within the human body. To provide a comprehensive and objective understanding of the current state and trends in the EIT algorithm research, we conducted bibliometric analysis on a 25-year EIT algorithm research dataset sourced from Web of Science Core Collections. We visualized publication characteristics, collaboration patterns, keywords, and co-cited references. The results indicate a steady increase in annual publications over recent decades. The United States, United Kingdom, China, and South Korea contributed 60% of the articles collaboratively. Keyword analysis unveiled three distinct stages in the evolution of EIT algorithm research: the establishment of fundamental algorithm frameworks, optimization for improved imaging performance, and the development of algorithms for clinical applications. Additionally, there has been a shift in research focus from traditional theories to the incorporation of new methods, such as artificial intelligence. Co-cited references suggest that integrating EIT with other established imaging techniques may emerge as a new trend in EIT algorithm research. In summary, EIT algorithms have been a consistent research focus, with current efforts centered on optimizing algorithms to enhance imaging performance. The emerging research trend involves utilizing more diverse and intersecting algorithms.

Clinical Features and Outcomes of Acute Kidney Injury in Critically Ill COVID-19 Patients: A Retrospective Observational Study

BACKGROUND

An alarming number of COVID-19 patients, especially in severe cases, have developed acute kidney injury (AKI).

AIM

The study aimed to assess the frequency, risk factors, and impact of AKI on mortality in critically ill COVID-19 patients.

METHODS

The study was a retrospective observational study conducted in the MICU. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify risk factors for AKI and clinical outcomes.

RESULTS

During the study period, 465 consecutive COVID-19 patients were admitted to the MICU. The patients' characteristics were median age, 64 [54-71] years; median SAPSII, 31 [24-38]; and invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), 244 (52.5%). The overall ICU mortality rate was 49%. Two hundred twenty-nine (49.2%) patients developed AKI. The factors independently associated with AKI were positive fluid balance (OR, 2.78; 95%CI [1.88-4.11]; p < 0.001), right heart failure (OR, 2.15; 95%CI [1.25-3.67]; p = 0.005), and IMV use (OR, 1.55; 95%CI [1.01-2.40]; p = 0.044). Among the AKI patients, multivariate analysis identified the following factors as independently associated with ICU mortality: age (OR, 1.05; 95%CI [1.02-1.09]; p = 0.012), IMV use (OR, 48.23; 95%CI [18.05-128.89]; p < 0.001), and septic shock (OR, 3.65; 95%CI [1.32-10.10]; p = 0.012).

CONCLUSION

The present study revealed a high proportion of AKI among critically ill COVID-19 patients. This complication seems to be linked to a severe cardiopulmonary interaction and fluid balance management, thus accounting for a poor outcome.

Emerging trends and hot spots on electrical impedance tomography extrapulmonary applications

Objective

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) develops rapidly in technology and applications. Nowadays EIT is used in multiple clinical and experimental scenarios including pulmonary, brain, and tissue monitoring, etc. The present study explores the research trends and hotspots on EIT extrapulmonary application research by bibliometrics analysis.

Approach

Publications on EIT extrapulmonary applications between 1987 and 2021 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. For precise screening, search strategy "electrical impedance tomography" plus "hemodynamic" or "brain" or "nerve" or "cancer" or "venous" or "vessel" or "tumor" or "veterinary" or "tissue" or "cell" or "wearable" or "application" and excluding "lung", "ventilation" "respiratory", "pulmonary", "algorithm", "current", "voltage" or "electrode" were used. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used to analyze the publication features, collaboration, keywords co-occurrence, and co-cited reference.

Main results

A total of 506 articles were finally identified. The global publication numbers on extrapulmonary applications gradually increased yearly in the past 30 years. The US, UK, and China contributed most three publications concerning EIT extrapulmonary applications. "tissues", "conductivity", "model" were research hotspots, and "cutaneous melanoma", "microstructure", "diagnosis" were recent topics (Portions of this research have previously been presented in poster form).

Significance

Overall, EIT extrapulmonary applications bibliometrics analysis provides a unique insight into research focus, current trends, and future directions.

The global inhomogeneity index assessed by electrical impedance tomography overestimates PEEP requirement in patients with ARDS: an observational study

Background

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) visualises alveolar overdistension and alveolar collapse and enables optimisation of ventilator settings by using the best balance between alveolar overdistension and collapse (ODCL). Besides, the global inhomogeneity index (GI), measured by EIT, may also be of added value in determining PEEP. Optimal PEEP is often determined based on the best dynamic compliance without EIT at the bedside. This study aimed to assess the effect of a PEEP trial on ODCL, GI and dynamic compliance in patients with and without ARDS. Secondly, PEEP levels from “optimal PEEP” approaches by ODCL, GI and dynamic compliance are compared.

Methods

In 2015–2016, we included patients with ARDS using postoperative cardiothoracic surgery patients as a reference group. A PEEP trial was performed with four consecutive incremental followed by four decremental PEEP steps of 2 cmH₂O. Primary outcomes at each step were GI, ODCL and best dynamic compliance. In addition, the agreement between ODCL, GI, and dynamic compliance was determined for the individual patient.

Results

Twenty-eight ARDS and 17 postoperative cardiothoracic surgery patients were included. The mean optimal PEEP, according to best compliance, was 10.3 (±2.9) cmH₂O in ARDS compared to 9.8 (±2.5) cmH₂O in cardiothoracic surgery patients. Optimal PEEP according to ODCL was 10.9 (±2.5) in ARDS and 9.6 (±1.6) in cardiothoracic surgery patients. Optimal PEEP according to GI was 17.1 (±3.9) in ARDS compared to 14.2 (±3.4) in cardiothoracic surgery patients.

Conclusions

Currently, no golden standard to titrate PEEP is available. We showed that when using the GI, PEEP requirements are higher compared to ODCL and best dynamic compliance during a PEEP trial in patients with and without ARDS.

Research Trends on Pulmonary Rehabilitation: A Bibliometric Analysis From 2011 to 2020

Background and Objective

A mounting body of evidence suggests that lung function may deteriorate over time with the development of chronic lung diseases (CRDs). Pulmonary rehabilitation has been proved to improve exercise capacity and quality of life in individuals with CRDs. However, PR remains grossly underutilized all around the world. This study aimed to analyze the research trends on PR over the past 10 years.

Methods

The publications related to pulmonary rehabilitation in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) from 2011 to 2020 were searched. VOSviewer (1.6.15) and CiteSpace Software (5.5.R2) were used to analyze authors and co-cited authors, countries and institutions, journals and co-cited journals, co-cited references, and keywords.

Results

A total of 4,521 publications were retrieved between 2011 and 2020, and the number of annual publications on pulmonary rehabilitation has shown an overall upward trend in the past decade. The USA was the most productive country, the University of Toronto from Canada was both the first in publications and citations. Spruit MA was both the most productive author and the one with the highest number of co-citations. The first productive journal was the International Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, while the first co-cited journal was the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. The hot keywords were grouped into three clusters, while “Asthma” and “Respiratory society statement” were determined as the frontier topics.

Conclusions

The present study successfully revealed the research status and development trends of pulmonary rehabilitation from 2011 to 2020 by using bibliometric analysis, which may help researchers explore and discover new research directions in the future.
