Microbial Volatiles: Small Molecules with an Important Role in Intra- and Inter-Kingdom Interactions

Enhanced catabolism of glycine betaine and derivatives provides improved osmotic stress protection in Methylorubrum extorquens PA1

Integration of metabolites into the overall metabolic network of a cell requires careful coordination dependent upon the ultimate usage of the metabolite. Different stoichiometric needs, and thus pathway fluxes, must exist for compounds destined for diverse uses, such as carbon sources, nitrogen sources, or stress-protective agents. Herein, we expand upon our previous work that highlighted the nature of glycine betaine (GB) metabolism in Methylobacteria to examine the utilization of GB-derivative compounds dimethylglycine (DMG) and sarcosine into Methylorubrum extorquens in different metabolic capacities, including as sole nitrogen and/or carbon sources. We isolated gain-of-function mutations that allowed M. extorquens PA1 to utilize dimethylglycine as a carbon source and dimethylglycine and sarcosine as nitrogen source. Characterization of mutants demonstrated selection for variants of the AraC-like regulator Mext_3735 that confer constitutive expression of the GB metabolic gene cluster, allowing direct utilization of the downstream GB derivatives. Finally, among the distinct isolates examined, we found that catabolism of the osmoprotectant used for selection (GB or dimethylglycine) enhanced osmotic stress resistance provided in the presence of that particular osmolyte. Thus, access to the carbon and nitrogen and osmoprotective effects of GB and DMG are made readily accessible through adaptive mutations. In M. extorquens PA1, the limitations to exploiting this group of compounds appear to exist predominantly at the levels of gene regulation and functional activity, rather than being constrained by transport or toxicity.IMPORTANCEOsmotic stress is a common challenge for bacteria colonizing the phyllosphere, where glycine betaine (GB) can be found as a prevalent osmoprotectant. Though Methylorubrum extorquens PA1 cannot use GB or its demethylation products, dimethylglycine (DMG) and sarcosine, as a sole carbon source, utilization is highly selectable via single nucleotide changes for both GB and DMG growth. The innate inability to use these compounds is due to limited flux through steps in the pathway and regulatory constraints. Herein, the characterization of the transcriptional regulator, Mext_3735 (GbdR), expands our understanding of the various roles in which GB derivatives can be used in M. extorquens PA1. Interestingly, increased catabolism of GB and derivatives does not interfere with, but rather improves, the ability of cells to thrive under increased salt stress conditions, suggesting that metabolic flux improves stress tolerance rather than providing a distinct tension between uses.

Volatile communication in Actinobacteria: a language for secondary metabolism regulation

BACKGROUND

Volatile compounds are key elements in the interaction and communication between organisms at both interspecific and intraspecific levels. In complex bacterial communities, the emission of these fast-acting chemical messengers allows an exchange of information even at a certain distance that can cause different types of responses in the receiving organisms. The changes in secondary metabolism as a consequence of this interaction arouse great interest in the field of searching for bioactive compounds since they can be used as a tool to activate silenced metabolic pathways. Regarding the great metabolic potential that the Actinobacteria group presents in the production of compounds with attractive properties, we evaluated the reply the emitted volatile compounds can generate in other individuals of the same group.

RESULTS

We recently reported that volatile compounds released by different streptomycete species trigger the modulation of biosynthetic gene clusters in Streptomyces spp. which finally leads to the activation/repression of the production of secondary metabolites in the recipient strains. Here we present the application of this rationale in a broader bacterial community to evaluate volatiles as signaling effectors that drive the activation of biosynthesis of bioactive compounds in other members of the Actinobacteria group. Using cocultures of different actinobacteria (where only the volatile compounds reach the recipient strain) we were able to modify the bacterial secondary metabolism that drives overproduction (e.g., granaticins, actiphenol, chromomycins) and/or de novo production (e.g., collismycins, skyllamycins, cosmomycins) of compounds belonging to different chemical species that present important biological activities.

CONCLUSIONS

This work shows how the secondary metabolism of different Actinobacteria species can vary significantly when exposed in co-culture to the volatile compounds of other phylum-shared bacteria, these effects being variable depending on strains and culture media. This approach can be applied to the field of new drug discovery to increase the battery of bioactive compounds produced by bacteria that can potentially be used in treatments for humans and animals.

Uncovering the multifaceted properties of 6-pentyl-alpha-pyrone for control of plant pathogens

Some volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by microorganisms have the ability to inhibit the growth and development of plant pathogens, induce the activation of plant defenses, and promote plant growth. Among them, 6-pentyl-alpha-pyrone (6-PP), a ketone produced by Trichoderma fungi, has emerged as a focal point of interest. 6-PP has been isolated and characterized from thirteen Trichoderma species and is the main VOC produced, often accounting for >50% of the total VOCs emitted. This review examines abiotic and biotic interactions regulating the production of 6-PP by Trichoderma, and the known effects of 6-PP on plant pathogens through direct and indirect mechanisms including induced systemic resistance. While there are many reports of 6-PP activity against plant pathogens, the vast majority have been from laboratory studies involving only 6-PP and the pathogen, rather than glasshouse or field studies including a host plant in the system. Biopesticides based on 6-PP may well provide an eco-friendly, sustainable management tool for future agricultural production. However, before this can happen, challenges including demonstrating disease control efficacy in the field, developing efficient delivery systems, and determining cost-effective application rates must be overcome before 6-PP's potential for pathogen control can be turned into reality.

Demonstrating the Applicability of Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometry to Quantify Volatiles Emitted by the Mycoparasitic Fungus Trichoderma atroviride in Real Time: Monitoring of Trichoderma-Based Biopesticides

The present study aims to explore the potential application of proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS) for real-time monitoring of microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs). This investigation can be broadly divided into two parts. First, a selection of 14 MVOCs was made based on previous research that characterized the MVOC emissions of Trichoderma atroviride, which is a filamentous fungus widely used as a biocontrol agent. The analysis of gas-phase standards using PTR-ToF-MS allowed for the categorization of these 14 MVOCs into two groups: the first group primarily undergoes nondissociative proton transfer, resulting in the formation of protonated parent ions, while the second group mainly undergoes dissociative proton transfer, leading to the formation of fragment ions. In the second part of this investigation, the emission of MVOCs from samples of T. atroviride was continuously monitored over a period of five days using PTR-ToF-MS. This also included the first quantitative online analysis of 6-amyl-α-pyrone (6-PP), a key MVOC emitted by T. atroviride. The 6-PP emissions of T. atroviride cultures were characterized by a gradual increase over the first two days of cultivation, reaching a plateau-like maximum with volume mixing ratios exceeding 600 ppbv on days three and four. This was followed by a marked decrease, where the 6-PP volume mixing ratios plummeted to below 50 ppbv on day five. This observed sudden decrease in 6-PP emissions coincided with the start of sporulation of the T. atroviride cultures as well as increasing intensities of product ions associated with 1-octen-3-ol and 3-octanone, whereas both these MVOCs were previously associated with sporulation in T. atroviride. The study also presents the observations and discussion of further MVOC emissions from the T. atroviride samples and concludes with a critical assessment of the possible applications and limitations of PTR-ToF-MS for the online monitoring of MVOCs from biological samples in real time.

Quorum sensing-related activities of beneficial and pathogenic bacteria have important implications for plant and human health

Eukaryotic organisms coevolved with microbes from the environment forming holobiotic meta-genomic units. Members of host-associated microbiomes have commensalic, beneficial/symbiotic, or pathogenic phenotypes. More than 100 years ago, Lorenz Hiltner, pioneer of soil microbiology, introduced the term 'Rhizosphere' to characterize the observation that a high density of saprophytic, beneficial, and pathogenic microbes are attracted by root exudates. The balance between these types of microbes decide about the health of the host. Nowadays we know, that for the interaction of microbes with all eukaryotic hosts similar principles and processes of cooperative and competitive functions are in action. Small diffusible molecules like (phyto)hormones, volatiles and quorum sensing signals are examples for mediators of interspecies and cross-kingdom interactions. Quorum sensing of bacteria is mediated by different autoinducible metabolites in a density-dependent manner. In this perspective publication, the role of QS-related activities for the health of hosts will be discussed focussing mostly on N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHL). It is also considered that in some cases very close phylogenetic relations exist between plant beneficial and opportunistic human pathogenic bacteria. Based on a genome and system-targeted new understanding, sociomicrobiological solutions are possible for the biocontrol of diseases and the health improvement of eukaryotic hosts.

Microbe-induced phenotypic variation leads to overyielding in clonal plant populations

Overyielding, the high productivity of multispecies plant communities, is commonly seen as the result of plant genetic diversity. Here we demonstrate that biodiversity-ecosystem functioning relationships can emerge in clonal plant populations through interaction with microorganisms. Using a model clonal plant species, we found that exposure to volatiles of certain microorganisms led to divergent plant phenotypes. Assembling communities out of plants associated with different microorganisms led to transgressive overyielding in both biomass and seed yield. Our results highlight the importance of belowground microbial diversity in plant biodiversity research and open new avenues for precision ecosystem management.

Volatile organic compounds produced by Paenibacillus polymyxa J2-4 exhibit toxic activity against Meloidogyne incognita

BACKGROUND

Root knot nematodes cause great damage to crops worldwide. Due to the negative effects of the application of fumigant and old chemical nematicides, biological nematicides have drawn increasing attention in recent years. Here we tested the fumigant activity of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) blends emitted from Paenibacillus polymyxa and pure commercial VOCs against M. incognita.

RESULTS

In this study, we investigated whether P. polymyxa strain J2-4 could produce VOCs that exhibit nematicidal activity. In vitro assays indicated that J2-4 VOCs were highly toxic to second stage juveniles (J2s) and could inhibit egg hatching. Three-layered pot experiments showed that the number of nematodes that penetrating in cucumber roots was reduced by 69.27% after the application of J2-4 VOCs under greenhouse conditions. We identified 14 volatiles using solid-phase micro-extraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The efficacy of six commercially available VOCs, namely 2-isobutyl-3-methylpyrazine, 2,4-dimethoxybenzaldoxime, 2-dodecanone, 2-tridecanol, 2-tridecanone, and 2-tetradecanol, against M. incognita were examined. Except for 2,4-dimethoxybenzaldoxime, the remaining five VOCs showed strong direct-contact nematicidal activity against J2s of M. incognita, and only 2-isobutyl-3-methylpyrazine showed strong fumigant activity against J2s of M. incognita. In pot experiments, 2-isobutyl-3-methylpyrazine and 2-dodecanone reduced the number of root galls by about 70%, and 2-tridecanone reduced the number of root galls and egg masses by about 63% compared with controls.

CONCLUSION

Paenibacillus polymyxa strain J2-4 exhibited high fumigant activity against M. incognita. Our results provide evidence for the use of J2-4 and its VOCs as biocontrol agents in the management of root-knot nematodes. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Analysis of root volatiles and functional characterization of a root-specific germacrene A synthase in Artemisia pallens

MAIN CONCLUSION

The study demonstrated that Artemisia pallens roots can be a source of terpene-rich essential oil and root-specific ApTPS1 forms germacrene A contributing to major root volatiles. Davana (Artemisia pallens Bess) is a valuable aromatic herb within the Asteraceae family, highly prized for its essential oil (EO) produced in the aerial parts. However, the root volatile composition, and the genes responsible for root volatiles have remained unexplored until now. Here, we show that A. pallens roots possess distinct oil bodies and yields ~ 0.05% of EO, which is primarily composed of sesquiterpenes β-elemene, neryl isovalerate, β-selinene, and α-selinene, and trace amounts of monoterpenes β-myrcene, D-limonene. This shows that, besides aerial parts, roots of davana can also be a source of unique EO. Moreover, we functionally characterized a terpene synthase (ApTPS1) that exhibited high in silico expression in the root transcriptome. The recombinant ApTPS1 showed the formation of β-elemene and germacrene A with E,E-farnesyl diphosphate (FPP) as a substrate. Detailed analysis of assay products revealed that β-elemene was the thermal rearrangement product of germacrene A. The functional expression of ApTPS1 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae confirmed the in vivo germacrene A synthase activity of ApTPS1. At the transcript level, ApTPS1 displayed predominant expression in roots, with significantly lower level of expression in other tissues. This expression pattern of ApTPS1 positively correlated with the tissue-specific accumulation level of germacrene A. Overall, these findings provide fundamental insights into the EO profile of davana roots, and the contribution of ApTPS1 in the formation of a major root volatile.

Ecological functions of fungal sesquiterpenes in the food preference and fitness of soil Collembola

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by fungi play a key role in locating and selecting hosts for fungivorous arthropods. However, the ecological functions of many common VOC classes, such as sesquiterpenes, remain unknown. Mutants of Trichoderma virens, defective in the emission of most sesquiterpenes owing to the deletion of the terpene cyclase vir4, were used to evaluate the role of this compound class in the food preference and fitness of the soil Collembola Folsomia candida. Choice experiments with and without direct contact with fungal mycelium revealed that Collembola were preferentially attracted to Δvir4 mutants impaired in sesquiterpene synthesis compared to wild-type T. virens. Grazing by F. candida on the sesquiterpene deficient T. virens strain had no effect on Collembola survival, reproduction and growth compared to wild-type T. virens. The results suggest that sesquiterpenes play an important role in fungal defence as repellents, but not as deterrents or toxins, against fungivorous Collembola. Our research contributes to the understanding of ecological interactions between fungi and fungivorous arthropods, providing insights into the specific ecological functions of sesquiterpenes. The study has implications for chemical ecology and the dynamics of multitrophic interactions in soil ecosystems.

Streptomyces Strains and Their Metabolites for Biocontrol of Phytopathogens in Agriculture

Sustainable agriculture is increasingly linked to biological pesticides as alternatives to agro-chemicals. Streptomyces species suppress plant diseases through their unique traits and numerous metabolites. Although many Streptomyces strains have been developed into commercial products, their roles in the biocontrol of phytopathogens and mechanisms of functional metabolite synthesis remain poorly understood. In this review, biocontrol of plant diseases by Streptomyces is summarized on the basis of classification of fungal and bacterial diseases and secondary metabolites produced by Streptomyces that act on phytopathogenic microorganisms are discussed. The associated non-ribosomal peptide synthetases and polyketide synthetases responsible for biosynthesis of these secondary metabolites are also investigated, and advances in fermentation of Streptomyces are described. Finally, the need to develop precise and effective biocontrol methods for plant diseases is highlighted.

Diverse roles played by "Pseudomonas fluorescens complex" volatile compounds in their interaction with phytopathogenic microrganims, pests and plants

Pseudomonas fluorescens complex consists of environmental and some human opportunistic pathogenic bacteria. It includes mainly beneficial and few phytopathogenic species that are common inhabitants of soil and plant rhizosphere. Many members of the group are in fact known as effective biocontrol agents of plant pathogens and as plant growth promoters and for these attitudes they are of great interest for biotechnological applications. The antagonistic activity of fluorescent Pseudomonas is mainly related to the production of several antibiotic compounds, lytic enzymes, lipopeptides and siderophores. Several volatile organic compounds are also synthesized by fluorescent Pseudomonas including different kinds of molecules that are involved in antagonistic interactions with other organisms and in the induction of systemic responses in plants. This review will mainly focus on the volatile compounds emitted by some members of P. fluorescens complex so far identified, with the aim to highlight the role played by these molecules in the interaction of the bacteria with phytopathogenic micro and macro-organisms and plants.

Endophytic fungi: Unravelling plant-endophyte interaction and the multifaceted role of fungal endophytes in stress amelioration

Endophytic fungi colonize interior plant tissue and mostly form mutualistic associations with their host plant. Plant-endophyte interaction is a complex mechanism and is currently a focus of research to understand the underlying mechanism of endophyte asymptomatic colonization, the process of evading plant immune response, modulation of gene expression, and establishment of a balanced mutualistic relationship. Fungal endophytes rely on plant hosts for nutrients, shelter, and transmission and improve the host plant's tolerance against biotic stresses, including -herbivores, nematodes, bacterial, fungal, viral, nematode, and other phytopathogens. Endophytic fungi have been reported to improve plant health by reducing and eradicating the harmful effect of phytopathogens through competition for space or nutrients, mycoparasitism, and through direct or indirect defense systems by producing secondary metabolites as well as by induced systemic resistance (ISR). Additionally, for efficient crop improvement, practicing them would be a fruitful step for a sustainable approach. This review article summarizes the current research progress in plant-endophyte interaction and the fungal endophyte mechanism to overcome host defense responses, their subsequent colonization, and the establishment of a balanced mutualistic interaction with host plants. This review also highlighted the potential of fungal endophytes in the amelioration of biotic stress. We have also discussed the relevance of various bioactive compounds possessing antimicrobial potential against a variety of agricultural pathogens. Furthermore, endophyte-mediated ISR is also emphasized.

A Plasmid-Borne Gene Cluster Flanked by Two Restriction-Modification Systems Enables an Arctic Strain of Psychrobacter sp. to Decompose SDS

The cold-adapted Psychrobacter sp. strain DAB_AL62B, isolated from ornithogenic deposits on the Arctic island of Spitsbergen, harbors a 34.5 kb plasmid, pP62BP1, which carries a genetic SLF module predicted to enable the host bacterium to metabolize alkyl sulfates including sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), a common anionic surfactant. In this work, we experimentally confirmed that the pP62BP1-harboring strain is capable of SDS degradation. The slfCHSL genes were shown to form an operon whose main promoter, PslfC, is negatively regulated by the product of the slfR gene in the absence of potential substrates. We showed that lauryl aldehyde acts as an inducer of the operon. The analysis of the draft genome sequence of the DAB_AL62B strain revealed that the crucial enzyme of the SDS degradation pathway-an alkyl sulfatase-is encoded only within the plasmid. The SLF module is flanked by two restriction-modification systems, which were shown to exhibit the same sequence specificity. We hypothesize that the maintenance of pP62BP1 may be dependent on this unique genetic organization.

Role of Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds in Promoting Plant Growth and Disease Resistance in Horticultural Production

Microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) are a diverse group of volatile organic compounds that microorganisms may produce and release into the environment. These compounds have both positive and negative effects on plants, as they have been shown to be effective at mitigating stresses and functioning as immune stimulants. Furthermore, MVOCs modulate plant growth and systemic plant resistance, while also serving as attractants or repellents for insects and other stressors that pose threats to plants. Considering the economic value of strawberries as one of the most popular and consumed fruits worldwide, harnessing the benefits of MVOCs becomes particularly significant. MVOCs offer cost-effective and efficient solutions for disease control and pest management in horticultural production, as they can be utilized at low concentrations. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the current knowledge on microorganisms that contribute to the production of beneficial volatile organic compounds for enhancing disease resistance in fruit products, with a specific emphasis on broad horticultural production. The review also identifies research gaps and highlights the functions of MVOCs in horticulture, along with the different types of MVOCs that impact plant disease resistance in strawberry production. By offering a novel perspective on the application and utilization of volatile organic compounds in sustainable horticulture, this review presents an innovative approach to maximizing the efficiency of horticultural production through the use of natural products.

Dimethylpolysulfides production as the major mechanism behind wheat fungal pathogen biocontrol, by Arthrobacter and Microbacterium actinomycetes

IMPORTANCE

As the management of wheat fungal diseases becomes increasingly challenging, the use of bacterial agents with biocontrol potential against the two major wheat phytopathogens, Fusarium graminearum and Zymoseptoria tritici, may prove to be an interesting alternative to conventional pest management. Here, we have shown that dimethylpolysulfide volatiles are ubiquitously and predominantly produced by wheat-associated Microbacterium and Arthrobacter actinomycetes, displaying antifungal activity against both pathogens. By limiting pathogen growth and DON virulence factor production, the use of such DMPS-producing strains as soil biocontrol inoculants could limit the supply of pathogen inocula in soil and plant residues, providing an attractive alternative to dimethyldisulfide fumigant, which has many non-targeted toxicities. Notably, this study demonstrates the importance of bacterial volatile organic compound uptake by inhibited F. graminearum, providing new insights for the study of volatiles-mediated toxicity mechanisms within bacteria-fungus signaling crosstalk.

Fungal Cultivars of Higher Attine Ants Promote Escovopsis Chemotropism

In varied environments, microorganisms search for partners or nutritional resources using chemical signals. Microbes are drawn (chemotaxis) or grow directionally (chemotropism) towards the chemical source, enabling them to establish and maintain symbiosis. The hypocrealean fungi Escovopsis enhance their growth towards the basidiomycete fungus Leucoagaricus gongylophorus, which is cultivated by leaf-cutting attine ants for food. Although directional growth is well documented in this symbiosis, it is unclear whether non-volatile or volatile organic compounds participate in the interaction between cultivar and Escovopsis, and which specific chemical compounds might attract and induce chemotropism. In this study, we examined the growth responses of Escovopsis isolates to non-volatile and volatile organic compounds produced by fungal cultivars of higher attine ants. We also isolated and identified molecules released by the ant-cultivar and assessed the chemotropism of Escovopsis towards them. Our results indicate that the growth of Escovopsis is stimulated in the presence of both non-volatile and volatile compounds from fungal cultivars. We also identified three isomeric diketopiperazines molecules from crude extracts of the ant cultivar, suggesting that these might play a role in Escovopsis chemotropism. Our findings provide insights into the complex chemical interactions that govern the association between Escovopsis and fungal cultivars.

Toxicity of fungal-derived volatile organic compounds against root-knot nematodes

BACKGROUND

Root-knot nematodes (RKNs), including Meloidogyne species, are among the most destructive plant-parasites worldwide. Recent evidence suggests that entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) can antagonize RKNs. Such antagonistic effects are likely mediated by toxic metabolites, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), produced by the fungi. However, how widespread these effects are across EPF species, and which VOCs mediate negative interactions between EPF and RKNs needs to be further elucidated.

RESULTS

First, we evaluated the nematicidal effect of VOCs emitted by 46 EPF isolates against Meloidogyne incognita and found variable toxicity depending on the isolate. Second, we measured the nematicidal effect of highly toxic isolates, including species in the genus Talaromyces, Aspergillus, Clonostachys, and Purpureocillium and, third, we analyzed the nematicidal effect of major VOCs, including 2-methyl-1-propanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, isopropyl alcohol and 2-methyl-3-pentanone. The mortality of M. incognita juveniles (J2s) was generally high (50%) either via airborne or in-solution contact with VOCs. Moreover, the tested VOCs significantly inhibited egg hatching, and repelled J2s away from the VOCs.

CONCLUSION

This study not only provides insights into the ecological function of VOCs in the rhizosphere, but also provides new approaches for developing environmentally friendly control methods of RKNs in agroecosystems. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Broad-spectrum antagonistic potential of Bacillus spp. volatiles against Rhizoctonia solani and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae

Rhizoctonia solani and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) are the two major diseases affecting the quality and quantity of rice production. In the current study, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of Bacillus spp. were used as green biocontrol agents for plant diseases. In in vitro experiments, Bacillus spp. FZB42, NMTD17, and LLTC93-VOCs displayed strong antimicrobial volatile activity with inhibition rates of 76, 66, and 78% for R. solani and 78, 81, and 76% for Xoo, respectively, compared to control. The synthetic VOCs, namely Pentadecane (PDC), Benzaldehyde (BDH), 1,2-Benz isothiazol-3(2H)-one (1,2-BIT), and mixture (MIX) of VOCs showed high volatile activity with inhibition rates of 86, 86, 89, and 92% against R. solani and 81, 81, 82, and 86%, respectively, against Xoo as compared to control. In addition, the scanning and transmission electron microscopes (SEM and TEM) analyses were performed to examine the effect of Bacillus and synthetic VOC treatments on R. solani and Xoo morphology. The analysis revealed the deformed and irregularized morphology of R. solani mycelia and Xoo cells after VOC treatments. The microscopic analysis showed that the rapid inhibition was due to severe oxidative productions inside the R. solani mycelia and Xoo cells. By using molecular docking, it was determined that the synthetic VOCs entered the active binding site of trehalase and NADH dehydrogenase proteins, causing R. solani and Xoo cells to die prematurely and an accumulation of ROS. In the greenhouse experiment, FZB42, NMTD17, and LLTC93-VOCs significantly reduced the lesions of R. solani 8, 7, and 6 cm, and Xoo 7, 6, and 6 cm, respectively, then control. The synthetic VOCs demonstrated that the PDC, BDH, 1,2-BIT, and MIX-VOCs significantly reduced R. solani lesions on leaves 6, 6, 6, and 5 cm and Xoo 6, 5, 5, and 4 cm, respectively, as compared to control. Furthermore, plant defence-related genes and antioxidant enzymes were upregulated in rice plants. These findings provide novel mechanisms by which Bacillus antimicrobial VOCs control plant diseases.

Endophytic fungal community of Rosa damascena Mill. as a promising source of indigenous biostimulants: Elucidating its spatial distribution, chemical diversity, and ecological functions

The role of endophytes in maintaining healthy plant ecosystems and holding promise for agriculture and food security is deeply appreciated. In the current study, we determine the community structure, spatial distribution, chemical diversity, and ecological functions of fungal endophytes of Rosa damascena growing in the North-Western Himalayas. Culture-dependent methods revealed that R. damascena supported a rich endophyte diversity comprising 32 genera and 68 OTUs. The diversity was governed by climate, altitude, and tissue type. Species of Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Penicillium, and Diaporthe were the core endophytes of the host plant consisting of 48.8% of the endophytes collectively. The predominant pathogen of the host was Alternaria spp., especially A. alternata. GC-MS analyses affirmed the production of diverse arrays of volatile organic compounds (VOC) by individual endophytes. Among the primary rose oil components, Diaporthe melonis RDE257, and Periconia verrucosa RDE85 produced phenyl ethyl alcohol (PEA) and benzyl alcohol (BA). The endophytes displayed varied levels of plant growth-promoting, colonization, and anti-pathogenic traits. Between the selected endophytes, P. verrucosa and D. melonis significantly potentiated plant growth and the flavonoids and chlorophyll content in the host. The potential of these two endophytes and their metabolites PEA and BA was confirmed on Nicotiana tabacum. The treatments of the metabolites and individual endophytes enhanced the growth parameters in the model plant significantly. The results imply that P. verrucosa and D. melonis are potential plant growth enhancers and their activity may be partially due to the production of PEA and BA. Thus, R. damascena harbors diverse endophytes with potential applications in disease suppression and host growth promotion. Further investigations at the molecular level are warranted to develop green endophytic agents for sustainable cultivation of R. damascena and biocontrol of leaf spot disease.

Bacterial volatiles elicit differential olfactory responses in insect species from the same and different trophic levels

Insect communities consist of species from several trophic levels that have to forage for suitable resources among and within larger patches of nonresources. To locate their resources, insects use diverse stimuli, including olfactory, visual, acoustic, tactile and gustatory cues. While most research has focused on cues derived from plants and other insects, there is mounting evidence that insects also respond to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by microorganisms. However, to date little is known about how the olfactory response of insects within and across different trophic levels is affected by bacterial VOCs. In this study, we used Y-tube bioassays and chemical analysis of VOCs to assess how VOCs emitted by bacteria affect the olfactory response of insects of the same and different trophic levels. Experiments were performed using two aphid species (Amphorophora idaei Börner and Myzus persicae var. nicotianae Blackman), three primary parasitoid species (Aphidius colemani Viereck, A. ervi Haliday, and A. matricariae Viereck), and two hyperparasitoid species (Asaphes suspensus Nees and Dendrocerus aphidum Rondani). Olfactory responses were evaluated for three bacterial strains (Bacillus pumilus ST18.16/133, Curtobacterium sp. ST18.16/085, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus ST18.16/160) that were isolated from the habitat of the insects. Results revealed that insects from all trophic levels responded to bacterial volatiles, but olfactory responses varied between and within trophic levels. All bacteria produced the same set of volatile compounds, but often in different relative concentrations. For 11 of these volatiles we found contrasting correlations between their concentration and the behavior of the primary parasitoids and hyperparasitoids. Furthermore, olfactometer experiments on three of these compounds confirmed the contrasting olfactory responses of primary parasitoids and hyperparasitoids. The potential of these findings for the development of novel semiochemical-based strategies to improve biological aphid control has been discussed.

Microbial Exudates as Biostimulants: Role in Plant Growth Promotion and Stress Mitigation

Microbes hold immense potential, based on the fact that they are widely acknowledged for their role in mitigating the detrimental impacts of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which were extensively employed during the Green Revolution era. The consequence of this extensive use has been the degradation of agricultural land, soil health and fertility deterioration, and a decline in crop quality. Despite the existence of environmentally friendly and sustainable alternatives, microbial bioinoculants encounter numerous challenges in real-world agricultural settings. These challenges include harsh environmental conditions like unfavorable soil pH, temperature extremes, and nutrient imbalances, as well as stiff competition with native microbial species and host plant specificity. Moreover, obstacles spanning from large-scale production to commercialization persist. Therefore, substantial efforts are underway to identify superior solutions that can foster a sustainable and eco-conscious agricultural system. In this context, attention has shifted towards the utilization of cell-free microbial exudates as opposed to traditional microbial inoculants. Microbial exudates refer to the diverse array of cellular metabolites secreted by microbial cells. These metabolites enclose a wide range of chemical compounds, including sugars, organic acids, amino acids, peptides, siderophores, volatiles, and more. The composition and function of these compounds in exudates can vary considerably, depending on the specific microbial strains and prevailing environmental conditions. Remarkably, they possess the capability to modulate and influence various plant physiological processes, thereby inducing tolerance to both biotic and abiotic stresses. Furthermore, these exudates facilitate plant growth and aid in the remediation of environmental pollutants such as chemicals and heavy metals in agroecosystems. Much like live microbes, when applied, these exudates actively participate in the phyllosphere and rhizosphere, engaging in continuous interactions with plants and plant-associated microbes. Consequently, they play a pivotal role in reshaping the microbiome. The biostimulant properties exhibited by these exudates position them as promising biological components for fostering cleaner and more sustainable agricultural systems.

Microbial volatile organic compounds as novel indicators of anaerobic digestion instability: Potential and challenges

The wide application of anaerobic digestion (AD) technology is limited by process fluctuations. Thus, process monitoring based on screening state parameters as early warning indicators (EWI) is a top priority for AD facilities. However, predicting anaerobic digester stability based on such indicators is difficult, and their threshold values are uncertain, case-specific, and sometimes produce conflicting results. Thus, new EWI should be proposed to integrate microbial and metabolic information. These microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) including alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, aromatic compounds are produced by microorganisms (bacteria, archaea and fungi), which might serve as a promising diagnostic tool for environmental monitoring. Moreover, mVOCs diffuse in both gas and liquid phases and are considered the language of intra kingdom microbial interactions. Herein, we highlight the potential of mVOCs as EWI for AD process instability, including discussions regarding characteristics and sources of mVOCs as well as sampling and determination methods. Furthermore, existing challenges must be addressed, before mVOCs profiling can be used as an early warning system for diagnosing AD process instability, such as mVOCs sampling, analysis and identification. Finally, we discuss the potential biotechnology applications of mVOCs and approaches to overcome the challenges regarding their application.

Recent advances in PGPR-mediated resilience toward interactive effects of drought and salt stress in plants

The present crisis at hand revolves around the need to enhance plant resilience to various environmental stresses, including abiotic and biotic stresses, to ensure sustainable agriculture and mitigate the impact of climate change on crop production. One such promising approach is the utilization of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) to mediate plant resilience to these stresses. Plants are constantly exposed to various stress factors, such as drought, salinity, pathogens, and nutrient deficiencies, which can significantly reduce crop yield and quality. The PGPR are beneficial microbes that reside in the rhizosphere of plants and have been shown to positively influence plant growth and stress tolerance through various mechanisms, including nutrient solubilization, phytohormone production, and induction of systemic resistance. The review comprehensively examines the various mechanisms through which PGPR promotes plant resilience, including nutrient acquisition, hormonal regulation, and defense induction, focusing on recent research findings. The advancements made in the field of PGPR-mediated resilience through multi-omics approaches (viz., genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics) to unravel the intricate interactions between PGPR and plants have been discussed including their molecular pathways involved in stress tolerance. Besides, the review also emphasizes the importance of continued research and implementation of PGPR-based strategies to address the pressing challenges facing global food security including commercialization of PGPR-based bio-formulations for sustainable agricultural.

Alleviation of banded leaf and sheath blight disease incidence in maize by bacterial volatile organic compounds and molecular docking of targeted inhibitors in Rhizoctonia solani

Rhizoctonia solani (RS) is a pathogenic fungus that affects maize (Zea mays L.) plants and causes banded leaf and sheath blight (BLSB) with severe consequences leading to significant economic losses. Contrarily, rhizobacteria produce numerous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that help in devising the environment-friendly mechanism for promoting plant growth and stress alleviation without having physical contact with plants. In the present study, 15 rhizobacterial strains were tested for their antagonism against RS. The antagonistic potential of VOCs of the tested plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) strains ranged from 50% to 80% as compared to the control (without PGPR). Among these 15 strains, the maximum (80%) antagonistic activity was exhibited by Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes SRM-16. Thus, the potential of VOCs produced by P. pseudoalcaligenes SRM-16 to alleviate the BLSB disease in maize was evaluated. A pot experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions to observe the effect of VOCs on disease resistance of BLSB-infected seedlings. Overall, maize seedlings exposed to VOCs showed a significant increase in disease resistance as indicated by a reduced disease score than that of unexposed infected plants. The VOCs-exposed maize exhibited lower (11.6%) disease incidence compared to the non-inoculated maize (14.1%). Moreover, plants exposed to VOCs displayed visible improvements in biomass, photosynthetic pigments, osmoregulation, and plant antioxidant and defense enzyme activities compared to the healthy but unexposed seedlings. Simultaneous application of RS and VOCs enhanced superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activities by 96.7%, 266.6%, 313.7%, 246.6%, 307%, and 149.7%, respectively, in the roots and by 81.6%, 246.4%, 269.5%, 269.6%, 329%, and 137.6%, respectively, in the shoots, relative to those of the control plants. The binding affinity of the VOCs (2-pentylfuran, 2,3-butanediol, and dimethyl disulfide) with CRZ1 and S9 protein receptors of RS was assessed by deploying in silico methods. Overall, 2-pentylfuran exhibited a binding affinity with both the selected receptors of RS, while 2,3-butanediol and dimethyl disulfide were able to bind S9 protein only. Hence, it can be deduced that S9 protein receptors are more likely the target RS receptors of bacterial VOCs to inhibit the proliferation of RS.

Inter- and intraspecific phytochemical variation correlate with epiphytic flower and leaf bacterial communities

Microbes associated with flowers and leaves affect plant health and fitness and modify the chemical phenotypes of plants with consequences for interactions of plants with their environment. However, the drivers of bacterial communities colonizing above-ground parts of grassland plants in the field remain largely unknown. We therefore examined the relationships between phytochemistry and the epiphytic bacterial community composition of flowers and leaves of Ranunculus acris and Trifolium pratense. On 252 plant individuals, we characterized primary and specialized metabolites, that is, surface sugars, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and metabolic fingerprints, as well as epiphytic flower and leaf bacterial communities. The genomic potential of bacterial colonizers concerning metabolic capacities was assessed using bacterial reference genomes. Phytochemical composition displayed pronounced variation within and between plant species and organs, which explained part of the variation in bacterial community composition. Correlation network analysis suggests strain-specific correlations with metabolites. Analysis of bacterial reference genomes revealed taxon-specific metabolic capabilities that corresponded with genes involved in glycolysis and adaptation to osmotic stress. Our results show relationships between phytochemistry and the flower and leaf bacterial microbiomes suggesting that plants provide chemical niches for distinct bacterial communities. In turn, bacteria may induce alterations in the plants' chemical phenotype. Thus, our study may stimulate further research on the mechanisms of trait-based community assembly in epiphytic bacteria.

Microbial volatile compounds (MVCs): an eco-friendly tool to manage abiotic stress in plants

Microbial volatile compounds (MVCs) are produced during the metabolism of microorganisms, are widely distributed in nature, and have significant applications in various fields. To date, several MVCs have been identified. Microbial groups such as bacteria and fungi release many organic and inorganic volatile compounds. They are typically small odorous compounds with low molecular masses, low boiling points, and lipophilic moieties with high vapor pressures. The physicochemical properties of MVCs help them to diffuse more readily in nature and allow dispersal to a more profound distance than other microbial non-volatile metabolites. In natural environments, plants communicate with several microorganisms and respond differently to MVCs. Here, we review the following points: (1) MVCs produced by various microbes including bacteria, fungi, viruses, yeasts, and algae; (2) How MVCs are effective, simple, efficient, and can modulate plant growth and developmental processes; and (3) how MVCs improve photosynthesis and increase plant resistance to various abiotic stressors.

Microbial Consortia for Plant Protection against Diseases: More than the Sum of Its Parts

Biological plant protection presents a promising and exciting alternative to chemical methods for safeguarding plants against the increasing threats posed by plant diseases. This approach revolves around the utilization of biological control agents (BCAs) to suppress the activity of significant plant pathogens. Microbial BCAs have the potential to effectively manage crop disease development by interacting with pathogens or plant hosts, thereby increasing their resistance. However, the current efficacy of biological methods remains unsatisfactory, creating new research opportunities for sustainable plant cultivation management. In this context, microbial consortia, comprising multiple microorganisms with diverse mechanisms of action, hold promise in terms of augmenting the magnitude and stability of the overall antipathogen effect. Despite scientific efforts to identify or construct microbial consortia that can aid in safeguarding vital crops, only a limited number of microbial consortia-based biocontrol formulations are currently available. Therefore, this article aims to present a complex analysis of the microbial consortia-based biocontrol status and explore potential future directions for biological plant protection research with new technological advancements.

Biocontrol of fungal phytopathogens by Bacillus pumilus

Plant growth-promoting bacteria are one of the most interesting methods of controlling fungal phytopathogens. These bacteria can participate in biocontrol via a variety of mechanisms including lipopeptide production, hydrolytic enzymes (e.g., chitinase, cellulases, glucanase) production, microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) production, and induced systemic resistance (ISR) triggering. Among the bacterial genera most frequently studied in this aspect are Bacillus spp. including Bacillus pumilus. Due to the range of biocontrol traits, B. pumilus is one of the most interesting members of Bacillus spp. that can be used in the biocontrol of fungal phytopathogens. So far, a number of B. pumilus strains that exhibit biocontrol properties against fungal phytopathogens have been described, e.g., B. pumilus HR10, PTB180, B. pumilus SS-10.7, B. pumilus MCB-7, B. pumilus INR7, B. pumilus SE52, SE34, SE49, B. pumilus RST25, B. pumilus JK-SX001, and B. pumilus KUDC1732. B. pumilus strains are capable of suppressing phytopathogens such as Arthrobotrys conoides, Fusarium solani, Fusarium oxysporum, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Rhizoctonia solani, and Fagopyrum esculentum. Importantly, B. pumilus can promote plant growth regardless of whether it alters the native microbiota or not. However, in order to increase its efficacy, research is still needed to clarify the relationship between the native microbiota and B. pumilus. Despite that, it can already be concluded that B. pumilus strains are good candidates to be environmentally friendly and commercially effective biocontrol agents.

Use of Trichoderma culture filtrates as a sustainable approach to mitigate early blight disease of tomato and their influence on plant biomarkers and antioxidants production

Introduction

Alternaria solani is a challenging pathogen in the tomato crop globally. Chemical control is a rapid approach, but emerging fungicide resistance has become a severe threat. The present study investigates the use of culture filtrates (CFs) of three species of Trichoderma spp. to control this disease.

Methods

Highly virulent A. solani strain and three Trichoderma fungal strains viz., T. harzianum (Accession No: MW590687), T. atroviride (Accession No: MW590689) and T. longibrachiatum (Accession No: MW590688) previously isolated by authors were used in this study. The efficacy of culture filtrates (CFs) to mitigate early blight disease were tested under greenhouse and field conditions, experiments were conducted in different seasons of 2020 using a tomato variety "doucen".

Results and discussion

The CFs of T. harzianum, T. longibrachiatum, and T. atroviride significantly inhibited the in vitro mycelial growth of A. solani (62.5%, 48.73%, and 57.82%, respectively, followed by control 100%). In the GC-MS analysis of Trichoderma CF volatile compounds viz., harzianic acid (61.86%) in T. harzianum, linoleic acid (70.02%) in T. atroviride, and hydroxymethylfurfural (68.08%) in the CFs of T. longibrachiatum, were abundantly present. Foliar application of CFs in the greenhouse considerably reduced the disease severity (%) in all treatments, viz., T. harzianum (18.03%), T. longibrachiatum (31.91%), and T. atroviride (23.33%), followed by infected control (86.91%), and positively affected the plant biomarkers. In the greenhouse, the plants treated with CFs demonstrated higher flavonoids after 6 days of inoculation, whereas phenolic compounds increased after 2 days. The CF-treated plants demonstrated higher antioxidant enzymes, i.e., phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and peroxidase (POD), after 4 days, whereas polyphenol oxidase (PPO) was higher after 6 days of inoculation, followed by healthy and infected controls. In open field conditions, disease severity in CF-treated plants was reduced in both seasons as compared to naturally infected plants, whereas CF-treated plants exhibited a higher fruit yield than controls. The present results conclude that CFs can be a potential biocontrol candidate and a promising alternative to the early blight pathogen for sustainable production.

Employing Genome Mining to Unveil a Potential Contribution of Endophytic Bacteria to Antimicrobial Compounds in the Origanum vulgare L. Essential Oil

Essential oils (EOs) from medicinal plants have long been used in traditional medicine for their widely known antimicrobial properties and represent a promising reservoir of bioactive compounds against multidrug-resistant pathogens. Endophytes may contribute to the yield and composition of EOs, representing a useful tool for biotechnological applications. In this work, we investigated the genomic basis of this potential contribution. The annotated genomes of four endophytic strains isolated from Origanum vulgare L. were used to obtain KEGG ortholog codes, which were used for the annotation of different pathways in KEGG, and to evaluate whether endophytes might harbor the (complete) gene sets for terpene and/or plant hormone biosynthesis. All strains possessed ortholog genes for the mevalonate-independent pathway (MEP/DOXP), allowing for the production of isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) and dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP) precursors. Ortholog genes for the next steps in terpenoid biosynthesis were scarce. All the strains possess potential plant growth promotion (PGP) ability, as shown by the presence of orthologous genes involved in the biosynthesis of indoleacetic acid. The main contribution of endophytes to the yield and composition of O. vulgare EO very likely resides in their PGP activities and in the biosynthesis of precursors of bioactive compounds.

Fungal volatiles have physiological properties

All fungi emit mixtures of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during growth. The qualitative and quantitative composition of these volatile mixtures vary with the species of fungus, the age of the fungus, and the environmental parameters attending growth. In nature, fungal VOCs are found as combinations of alcohols, aldehydes, acids, ethers, esters, ketones, terpenes, thiols and their derivatives, and are responsible for the characteristic odors associated with molds, mushrooms and yeasts. One of the single most common fungal volatiles is 1-octen-3-ol also known as "mushroom alcohol" or "matsutake alcohol." Many volatiles, including 1-octen-3-ol, serve as communication agents and display biological activity as germination inhibitors, plant growth retardants or promoters, and as semiochemicals ("infochemicals") in interactions with arthropods. Volatiles are understudied and underappreciated elements of the chemical lives of fungi. This review gives a brief introduction to fungal volatiles in hopes of raising awareness of the physiological importance of these gas phase fungal metabolites to encourage mycologists and other biologists to stop "throwing away the head space."

Plant-Microbes Interaction: Exploring the Impact of Cold-Tolerant Bacillus Strains RJGP41 and GBAC46 Volatiles on Tomato Growth Promotion through Different Mechanisms

The interaction between plant and bacterial VOCs has been extensively studied, but the role of VOCs in growth promotion still needs to be explored. In the current study, we aim to explore the growth promotion mechanisms of cold-tolerant Bacillus strains GBAC46 and RJGP41 and the well-known PGPR strain FZB42 and their VOCs on tomato plants. The result showed that the activity of phytohormone (IAA) production was greatly improved in GBAC46 and RJGP41 as compared to FZB42 strains. The in vitro and in-pot experiment results showed that the Bacillus VOCs improved plant growth traits in terms of physiological parameters as compared to the CK. The VOCs identified through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis, namely 2 pentanone, 3-ethyl (2P3E) from GBAC46, 1,3-cyclobutanediol,2,2,4,4-tetramethyl (CBDO) from RJGP41, and benzaldehyde (BDH) from FZB42, were used for plant growth promotion. The results of the partition plate (I-plate) and in-pot experiments showed that all the selected VOCs (2P3E, CBDO, and BDH) promoted plant growth parameters as compared to CK. Furthermore, the root morphological factors also revealed that the selected VOCs improved the root physiological traits in tomato plants. The plant defense enzymes (POD, APX, SOD, and CAT) and total protein contents were studied, and the results showed that the antioxidant enzymes and protein contents significantly increased as compared to CK. Similarly, plant growth promotion expression genes (IAA4, ARF10A, GA2OX2, CKX2, and EXP1) were significantly upregulated and the ERF gene was downregulated as compared to CK. The overall findings suggest that both Bacillus isolates and their pure VOCs positively improved plant growth promotion activities by triggering the antioxidant enzyme activity, protein contents, and relative gene expressions in tomato plants.

Identification and characterization of Brevibacillus halotolerans B-4359: a potential antagonistic bacterium against red pepper anthracnose in Korea

Our study aimed to identify potential biocontrol agents (BCAs) against major phytopathogens under in vitro conditions by screening the Freshwater Bioresources Culture Collection (FBCC), Korea. Of the identified 856 strains, only 65 exhibited antagonistic activity, among which only one representative isolation, Brevibacillus halotolerans B-4359 was selected based on its in vitro antagonistic activity and enzyme production. Cell-free culture filtrate (CF) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of B-4359 were shown to be effective against the mycelial growth of Colletotrichum acutatum. Notably, B-4359 was found to promote spore germination in C. acutatum instead of exhibiting a suppressive effect when the bacterial suspension was mixed with the spore suspension of C. acutatum. However, B-4359 showed an excellent biological control effect on the anthracnose of red pepper fruits. Compared to other treatments and untreated control, B-4359 played a more effective role in controlling anthracnose disease under field conditions. The strain was identified as B. halotolerans using BIOLOG and 16S rDNA sequencing analyses. The genetic mechanism underlying the biocontrol traits of B-4359 was characterized using the whole-genome sequence of B-4359, which was closely compared with related strains. The whole-genome sequence of B-4359 consisted of 5,761,776 bp with a GC content of 41.0%, including 5,118 coding sequences, 117 tRNA, and 36 rRNA genes. The genomic analysis identified 23 putative secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters. Our results provide a deep understanding of B-4359 as an effective biocontrol agent against red pepper anthracnose for sustainable agriculture.

Identification and Surveys of Promoting Plant Growth VOCs from Biocontrol Bacteria Paenibacillus peoriae GXUN15128

The role of microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) in promoting plant growth has received much attention. We isolated Paenibacillus peoriae from mangrove rhizosphere soil, which can produce VOCs to promote the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings, increase the aboveground biomass of A. thaliana, and increase the number of lateral roots of A. thaliana. The effects of different inoculation amounts and different media on the composition of MVOCs were studied by solid-phase microextraction/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME/GC-MS) and headspace sampler/GC-MS. We found that the growth medium influences the function and composition of MVOCs. To survey the growth-promoting functions, the transcriptome of the receptor A. thaliana was then determined. We also verified the inhibitory effect of the soluble compounds produced by P. peoriae on the growth of 10 pathogenic fungi. The ability of P. peoriae to produce volatile and soluble compounds to promote plant growth and disease resistance has shown great potential for application in the sustainability of agricultural production. IMPORTANCE Microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) have great potential as "gas fertilizers" for agricultural applications, and it is a promising research direction for the utilization of microbial resources. This study is part of the field of interactions between microorganisms and plants. To study the function and application of microorganisms from the perspective of VOCs is helpful to break the bottleneck of traditional microbial application. At present, the study of MVOCs is lacking; there is a lack of functional strains, especially with plant-protective functions and nonpathogenic application value. The significance of this study is that it provides Paenibacillus peoriae, which produces VOCs with plant growth-promoting effects and broad-spectrum antifungal activity against plant-pathogenic fungi. Our study provides a more comprehensive, new VOC component analysis method and explains how MVOCs promote plant growth through transcriptome analysis. This will greatly increase our understanding of MVOC applications as a model for other MVOC research.

Deciphering Plant-Insect-Microorganism Signals for Sustainable Crop Production

Agricultural crop productivity relies on the application of chemical pesticides to reduce pest and pathogen damage. However, chemical pesticides also pose a range of ecological, environmental and economic penalties. This includes the development of pesticide resistance by insect pests and pathogens, rendering pesticides less effective. Alternative sustainable crop protection tools should therefore be considered. Semiochemicals are signalling molecules produced by organisms, including plants, microbes, and animals, which cause behavioural or developmental changes in receiving organisms. Manipulating semiochemicals could provide a more sustainable approach to the management of insect pests and pathogens across crops. Here, we review the role of semiochemicals in the interaction between plants, insects and microbes, including examples of how they have been applied to agricultural systems. We highlight future research priorities to be considered for semiochemicals to be credible alternatives to the application of chemical pesticides.

A Meta-Analysis of Bacterial Communities in Food Processing Facilities: Driving Forces for Assembly of Core and Accessory Microbiomes across Different Food Commodities

Microbial spoilage is a major cause of food waste. Microbial spoilage is dependent on the contamination of food from the raw materials or from microbial communities residing in food processing facilities, often as bacterial biofilms. However, limited research has been conducted on the persistence of non-pathogenic spoilage communities in food processing facilities, or whether the bacterial communities differ among food commodities and vary with nutrient availability. To address these gaps, this review re-analyzed data from 39 studies from various food facilities processing cheese (n = 8), fresh meat (n = 16), seafood (n = 7), fresh produce (n = 5) and ready-to-eat products (RTE; n = 3). A core surface-associated microbiome was identified across all food commodities, including Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Staphylococcus, Psychrobacter, Stenotrophomonas, Serratia and Microbacterium. Commodity-specific communities were additionally present in all food commodities except RTE foods. The nutrient level on food environment surfaces overall tended to impact the composition of the bacterial community, especially when comparing high-nutrient food contact surfaces to floors with an unknown nutrient level. In addition, the compositions of bacterial communities in biofilms residing in high-nutrient surfaces were significantly different from those of low-nutrient surfaces. Collectively, these findings contribute to a better understanding of the microbial ecology of food processing environments, the development of targeted antimicrobial interventions and ultimately the reduction of food waste and food insecurity and the promotion of food sustainability.

Antifungal activity of volatile and non-volatile metabolites of endophytes of Chloranthus elatior Sw

Agriculture crops that have fungal infections suffer significant economic losses and reduced crop output. Chemical fungicides are used to tackle the problem, although this has additional detrimental side effects. There is an urgent need for safe and novel antifungals. Volatiles from plant-beneficial endophytic fungi are considered promising alternatives for the biological control of fungal pathogens as a sustainable approach in an agroecosystem. In the present investigation, a volatile-emitting sterile endophytic fungus, Diaporthe sp. CEL3 with bio-fumigation activity, was isolated from leaves of the ethnomedicinal plant Chloranthus elatior Sw., collected from the Passighat forest of North-East India. The camphor odor volatiles of CEL3 showed an inhibitory effect against eight fungal pathogens in vitro and minimized the infections of Monilinia fructicola, a causal agent of cherry fruit rot, in VOC-exposed cherry fruits. Rhizoctonia solani, Botrytis cinerea, Pythium ultimum, and M. fructicola were maximally inhibited up to 51.5%, 55.8%, 61.9%, and 78.5%, respectively, in comparison to control by the volatiles. Another isolate, CEL7, identified as Curvularia sp., synthesized non-volatile, soluble antifungal metabolites in its cell-free extracts and exhibited antifungal action. Bioassay-guided fractionation revealed the presence of imidazole compounds- (2-aminoethyl)-1H-imidazole-2-carbaldehyde, Pyrazole 4, 5 imidazole, 1-formyl 3-ethyl, phenol compounds-Phenol, 4-[2-(methylamino) ethyl]-, 6-Nitro-3-chlorophenol, Phenol, 2,4,6-tri-tert-butyl-, etc., in the cell-free extracts, with a MIC value of 250-2,000 µg ml-1. Optimum VOC emission was achieved in a modified PDA medium with instantly smashed potato (150 g L-1), dextrose (20 g L-1), wheat husk (20 g L-1), and yeast extract (20 g L-1), with additional salts. Interestingly, endophytic CEL3 emitted different types of volatiles, and trans-verbenol (32.25%), geraniol (30.32%), trans-ocimenol (12.90%), and mentha-4,8-diene (5.16%) were the prime ones. These VOCs cause lethal leakage of protein and necessary intracellular molecules from the fungal pathogens. Thus, CEL3 could potentially be used as a bio-fumigating agent to control post-harvest infections caused by fungal pathogens. This study opens a new approach to the use of endophytic fungi in biocontrol.

Suppressive Effects of Volatile Compounds from Bacillus spp. on Magnaporthe oryzae Triticum (MoT) Pathotype, Causal Agent of Wheat Blast

The Magnaporthe oryzae Triticum (MoT) pathotype is the causal agent of wheat blast, which has caused significant economic losses and threatens wheat production in South America, Asia, and Africa. Three bacterial strains from rice and wheat seeds (B. subtilis BTS-3, B. velezensis BTS-4, and B. velezensis BTLK6A) were used to explore the antifungal effects of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of Bacillus spp. as a potential biocontrol mechanism against MoT. All bacterial treatments significantly inhibited both the mycelial growth and sporulation of MoT in vitro. We found that this inhibition was caused by Bacillus VOCs in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, biocontrol assays using detached wheat leaves infected with MoT showed reduced leaf lesions and sporulation compared to the untreated control. VOCs from B. velezensis BTS-4 alone or a consortium (mixture of B. subtilis BTS-3, B. velezensis BTS-4, and B. velezensis BTLK6A) of treatments consistently suppressed MoT in vitro and in vivo. Compared to the untreated control, VOCs from BTS-4 and the Bacillus consortium reduced MoT lesions in vivo by 85% and 81.25%, respectively. A total of thirty-nine VOCs (from nine different VOC groups) from four Bacillus treatments were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), of which 11 were produced in all Bacillus treatments. Alcohols, fatty acids, ketones, aldehydes, and S-containing compounds were detected in all four bacterial treatments. In vitro assays using pure VOCs revealed that hexanoic acid, 2-methylbutanoic acid, and phenylethyl alcohol are potential VOCs emitted by Bacillus spp. that are suppressive for MoT. The minimum inhibitory concentrations for MoT sporulation were 250 mM for phenylethyl alcohol and 500 mM for 2-methylbutanoic acid and hexanoic acid. Therefore, our results indicate that VOCs from Bacillus spp. are effective compounds to suppress the growth and sporulation of MoT. Understanding the MoT sporulation reduction mechanisms exerted by Bacillus VOCs may provide novel options to manage the further spread of wheat blast by spores.

Rapid Identification of Carbapenemase-Producing Klebsiella pneumoniae Using Headspace Solid-Phase Microextraction Combined with Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

Background

Carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae is an unprecedented threat to public health, and its detection remains challenging. Analysis of microbial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) may offer a rapid way to determine bacterial antibiotic susceptibility.

Purpose

The aim of this study was to explore the VOCs released by carbapenemase-producing carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) using headspace solid-phase microextraction/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS).

Methods

Test bacteria were incubated in trypticase soy broth to the end of exponential growth phase, and imipenem was added in the middle time. Headspace VOCs were concentrated and analyzed using HS-SPME/GC-MS.

Results

The compound 3-methyl-1-butanol was found to be a biomarker among the 26 bacterial isolates (10 KPC-positive, 10 NDM-positive, 2 IMP-positive, 2 carbapenemase-negative CRKP, and 2 carbapenem-susceptible K. pneumonoiae).

Conclusion

This study explored a promising new strategy for the screening of carbapenemase-producing CRKP strains. Further research with larger sample sizes will potentially accelerate the application of biomarkers in routine microbiology.

Protection of postharvest grains from fungal spoilage by biogenic volatiles

Fungal spoilage of postharvest grains poses serious problems with respect to food safety, human health, and the economic value of grains. The protection of cereal grains from deleterious fungi is a critical aim in postharvest grain management. Considering the bulk volume of grain piles in warehouses or bins and food safety, fumigation with natural gaseous fungicides is a promising strategy to control fungal contamination on postharvest grains. Increasing research has focused on the antifungal properties of biogenic volatiles. This review summarizes the literature related to the effects of biogenic volatiles from microbes and plants on spoilage fungi on postharvest grains and highlights the underlying antifungal mechanisms. Key areas for additional research on fumigation with biogenic volatiles in postharvest grains are noted. The research described in this review supports the protective effects of biogenic volatiles against grain spoilage by fungi, providing a basis for their expanded application in the management of postharvest grains.

Bacillus VOCs in the Context of Biological Control

A contemporary agricultural production system relying on heavy usage of agrochemicals represents a questionable outlook for sustainable food supply in the future. The visible negative environmental impacts and unforeseen consequences to human and animal health have been requiring a shift towards the novel eco-friendly alternatives for chemical pesticides for a while now. Microbial-based biocontrol agents have shown a promising potential for plant disease management. The bacteria of the genus Bacillus have been among the most exploited microbial active components due to several highly efficient mechanisms of action against plant pathogens, as well as a palette of additional plant-beneficial mechanisms, together with their suitable properties for microbial biopesticide formulations. Among other bioactive metabolites, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been investigated for their biocontrol applications, exhibiting the main advantage of long-distance effect without the necessity for direct contact with plants or pathogens. The aim of this study is to give an overview of the state-of-the-art in the field of Bacillus-based VOCs, especially in terms of their antibacterial, antifungal, and nematicidal action as the main segments determining their potential for biocontrol applications in sustainable agriculture.

Why Do These Yeasts Smell So Good? Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Produced by Malassezia Species in the Exponential and Stationary Growth Phases

Malassezia synthesizes and releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs), small molecules that allow them to carry out interaction processes. These lipid-dependent yeasts belong to the human skin mycobiota and are related to dermatological diseases. However, knowledge about VOC production and its function is lacking. This study aimed to determine the volatile profiles of Malassezia globosa, Malassezia restricta, and Malassezia sympodialis in the exponential and stationary growth phases. The compounds were separated and characterized in each growth phase through headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). We found a total of 54 compounds, 40 annotated. Most of the compounds identified belong to alcohols and polyols, fatty alcohols, alkanes, and unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons. Unsupervised and supervised statistical multivariate analyses demonstrated that the volatile profiles of Malassezia differed between species and growth phases, with M. globosa being the species with the highest quantity of VOCs. Some Malassezia volatiles, such as butan-1-ol, 2-methylbutan-1-ol, 3-methylbutan-1-ol, and 2-methylpropan-1-ol, associated with biological interactions were also detected. All three species show at least one unique compound, suggesting a unique metabolism. The ecological functions of the compounds detected in each species and growth phase remain to be studied. They could interact with other microorganisms or be an important clue in understanding the pathogenic role of these yeasts.

Metabolite-Mediated Responses of Phyllosphere Microbiota to Rust Infection in Two Malus Species

Plants recruit beneficial microbes to enhance their ability to fight pathogens. However, the current understanding of microbial recruitment is largely limited to belowground systems (root exudates and the rhizosphere). It remains unclear whether the changes in leaf metabolites induced by infectious pathogens can actively recruit beneficial microbes to mitigate the growth of foliar pathogens. In this study, we integrated microbiome and metabolomic analyses to systematically explore the dynamics of phyllosphere fungal and bacterial communities and key leaf metabolites in two crabapple species (Malus sp. "Flame" and Malus sp. "Kelsey") at six stages following infection with Gymnosporangium yamadae. Our results showed that the phyllosphere microbiome changed during lesion expansion, as highlighted by a reduction in bacterial alpha-diversity and an increase in fungal alpha-diversity; a decreasing and then an increasing complexity of the microbial co-occurrence network was observed in Kelsey and a decreasing complexity occurred in Flame. In addition, nucleotide sugars, diarylheptanoids, and carboxylic acids with aromatic rings were more abundant in early stages of collection, which positively regulated the abundance of bacterial orders Pseudomonadales (in Kelsey), Acidimicrobiales, Bacillales, and Flavobacteriales (in Flame). In addition, metabolites such as flavonoids, lignin precursors, terpenoids, coumarins, and quaternary ammonium salts enriched with the expansion of lesions had a positive regulatory effect on fungal families Rhynchogastremataceae and Golubeviaceae (in Flame) and the bacterial order Actinomycetales (in Kelsey). Our findings highlight that plants may also influence phyllosphere microorganisms by adjusting leaf metabolites in response to biotic stress. IMPORTANCE Our findings demonstrate the response patterns of bacterial and fungal communities in the Malus phyllosphere to rust fungus G. yamadae infection, and they also reveal how the phyllosphere microbiome changes with the expansion of lesions. We identified several metabolites whose relative abundance varied significantly with lesion expansion. Using a framework for assessing the role of leaf metabolites in shaping the phyllosphere microbiome of the two Malus species, we identified several specific metabolites that have profoundly selective effects on the microbial community. In conclusion, our study provides new evidence of the ecological niche of the phyllosphere in supporting the "cry for help" strategy for plants.

Bacterial volatile organic compounds as biopesticides, growth promoters and plant-defense elicitors: Current understanding and future scope

Bacteria emit a large number of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the environment. VOCs are species-specific and their emission depends on environmental conditions, such as growth medium, pH, temperature, incubation time and interaction with other microorganisms. These VOCs can enhance plant growth, suppress pathogens and act as signaling molecules during plant-microorganism interactions. Some bacterial VOCs have been reported to show strong antimicrobial, nematicidal, pesticidal, plant defense, induced tolerance and plant-growth-promoting activities under controlled conditions. Commonly produced antifungal VOCs include dimethyl trisulfide, dimethyl disulfide, benzothiazole, nonane, decanone and 1-butanol. Species of Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Arthrobacter, Enterobacter and Burkholderia produce plant growth promoting VOCs, such as acetoin and 2,3-butenediol. These VOCs affect expression of genes involved in defense and development in plant species (i.e., Arabidopsis, tobacco, tomato, potato, millet and maize). VOCs are also implicated in altering pathogenesis-related genes, inducing systemic resistance, modulating plant metabolic pathways and acquiring nutrients. However, detailed mechanisms of action of VOCs need to be further explored. This review summarizes the bioactive VOCs produced by diverse bacterial species as an alternative to agrochemicals, their mechanism of action and challenges for employment of bacterial VOCs for sustainable agricultural practices. Future studies on technological improvements for bacterial VOCs application under greenhouse and open field conditions are warranted.

Volatile Organic Compounds from Pythium oligandrum Play a Role in Its Parasitism on Plant-Pathogenic Pythium myriotylum

The oomycete Pythium oligandrum is a soil-inhabiting parasite and predator of both fungi and oomycetes, and uses hydrolytic enzymes extensively to penetrate and hydrolyze its host or prey. Other mechanisms have been studied less, and we investigated the contribution of P. oligandrum-produced volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to parasitism. The growth-inhibiting activity of P. oligandrum VOCs was tested on Pythium myriotylum-a host or prey of P. oligandrum-coupled with electron microscopy, and biochemical and transcriptomic analyses. The P. oligandrum-produced VOCs reduced P. myriotylum growth by 80% and zoospore levels by 60%. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identified 23 VOCs, and methyl heptenone, d-limonene, 2-undecanone, and 1-octanal were potent inhibitors of P. myriotylum growth and led to increased production of reactive oxygen species at a concentration that did not inhibit P. oligandrum growth. Exposure to the P. oligandrum VOCs led to shrinkage of P. myriotylum hyphae and lysis of the cellular membranes and organelles. Transcriptomics of P. myriotylum exposed to the P. oligandrum VOCs at increasing levels of growth inhibition initially showed a strong upregulation of putative detoxification-related genes that was not maintained later. The inhibition of P. myriotylum growth continued immediately after the exposure to the VOCs was discontinued and led to the reduced infection of its plant hosts. The VOCs produced by P. oligandrum could be another factor alongside hydrolytic enzymes contributing to its ecological role as a microbial parasite in particular ecological niches such as in soil, and may also contribute to the biocontrol of diseases using P. oligandrum commercial preparations. IMPORTANCE Microbe-microbe interactions in nature are multifaceted, with multiple mechanisms of action, and are crucial to how plants interact with microbes. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have diverse functions, including contributing to parasitism in ecological interactions and potential applications in biocontrol. The microbial parasite P. oligandrum is well known for using hydrolytic enzymes as part of its parasitism. We found that P. oligandrum VOCs reduced the growth of, and caused major damage to, the hyphae of P. myriotylum (a host or prey of P. oligandrum). Transcriptomic analyses of P. myriotylum exposed to the VOCs revealed the upregulation of genes potentially involved in an attempt to detoxify the VOCs. The inhibitory effects of the VOCs had a knock-on effect by reducing the virulence of P. myriotylum toward its plant hosts. The P. oligandrum VOCs could contribute to its ecological role as a microbial parasite. The VOCs analyzed here may also contribute to the biocontrol of diseases using P. oligandrum commercial preparations.

Biological activity of volatiles produced by the strains of two Pseudomonas and two Serratia species

Volatile compounds emitted by bacteria can play a significant role in interacting with microorganisms, plants, and other organisms. In this work, we studied the effect of total gaseous mixtures of organic as well as inorganic volatile compounds (VCs) and individual pure volatile organic compounds (VOCs: ketones 2-nonanone, 2-heptanone, 2-undecanone, a sulfur-containing compound dimethyl disulfide) synthesized by the rhizosphere Pseudomonas chlororaphis 449 and Serratia plymuthica IC1270 strains, the soil-borne strain P. fluorescens B-4117, and the spoiled meat isolate S. proteamaculans 94 strain on Arabidopsis thaliana plants (on growth and germination of seeds). We demonstrated that total mixtures of volatile compounds emitted by these strains grown on Luria-Bertani agar, Tryptone Soya Agar, and Potato Dextrose Agar media inhibited the A. thaliana growth. When studied bacteria grew on Murashige and Skoog (MS) agar medium, volatile mixtures produced by bacteria could stimulate the growth of plants. Volatile compounds of bacteria slowed down the germination of plant seeds; in the presence of volatile mixtures of P. fluorescens B-4117, the seeds did not germinate. Of the individual VOCs, 2-heptanone had the most potent inhibitory effect on seed germination. We also showed that the tested VOCs did not cause oxidative stress in Escherichia coli cells using specific lux-biosensors. VOCs reduced the expression of the lux operon from the promoters of the katG, oxyS, and soxS genes (whose products involved in the protection of cells from oxidative stress) caused by the action of hydrogen peroxide and paraquat, respectively.

Fungistatic Activity Mediated by Volatile Organic Compounds Is Isolate-Dependent in Trichoderma sp. "atroviride B"

Trichoderma spp. produce multiple bioactive volatile organic compounds (VOCs). While the bioactivity of VOCs from different Trichoderma species is well documented, information on intraspecific variation is limited. The fungistatic activity of VOCs emitted by 59 Trichoderma sp. "atroviride B" isolates against the pathogen Rhizoctonia solani was investigated. Eight isolates representing the two extremes of bioactivity against R. solani were also assessed against Alternaria radicina, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. VOCs profiles of these eight isolates were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to identify a correlation between specific VOCs and bioactivity, and 11 VOCs were evaluated for bioactivity against the pathogens. Bioactivity against R. solani varied among the fifty-nine isolates, with five being strongly antagonistic. All eight selected isolates inhibited the growth of all four pathogens, with bioactivity being lowest against F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici. In total, 32 VOCs were detected, with individual isolates producing between 19 and 28 VOCs. There was a significant direct correlation between VOC number/quantity and bioactivity against R. solani. 6-pentyl-α-pyrone was the most abundant VOC produced, but 15 other VOCs were also correlated with bioactivity. All 11 VOCs tested inhibited R. solani growth, some by >50%. Some of the VOCs also inhibited the growth of the other pathogens by >50%. This study demonstrates significant intraspecific differences in VOC profiles and fungistatic activity supporting the existence of biological diversity within Trichoderma isolates from the same species, a factor in many cases ignored during the development of biological control agents.

Bacterial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) promote growth and induce metabolic changes in rice

Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) represent an eco-friendly alternative to reduce the use of chemical products while increasing the productivity of economically important crops. The emission of small gaseous signaling molecules from PGPB named volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has emerged as a promising biotechnological tool to promote biomass accumulation in model plants (especially Arabidopsis thaliana) and a few crops, such as tomato, lettuce, and cucumber. Rice (Oryza sativa) is the most essential food crop for more than half of the world's population. However, the use of VOCs to improve this crop performance has not yet been investigated. Here, we evaluated the composition and effects of bacterial VOCs on the growth and metabolism of rice. First, we selected bacterial isolates (IAT P4F9 and E.1b) that increased rice dry shoot biomass by up to 83% in co-cultivation assays performed with different durations of time (7 and 12 days). Metabolic profiles of the plants co-cultivated with these isolates and controls (without bacteria and non-promoter bacteria-1003-S-C1) were investigated via ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance. The analysis identified metabolites (e.g., amino acids, sugars, and others) with differential abundance between treatments that might play a role in metabolic pathways, such as protein synthesis, signaling, photosynthesis, energy metabolism, and nitrogen assimilation, involved in rice growth promotion. Interestingly, VOCs from IAT P4F9 displayed a more consistent promotion activity and were also able to increase rice dry shoot biomass in vivo. Molecular identification by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene of the isolates IAT P4F9 and E.1b showed a higher identity with Serratia and Achromobacter species, respectively. Lastly, volatilomes of these and two other non-promoter bacteria (1003-S-C1 and Escherichia coli DH5α) were evaluated through headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Compounds belonging to different chemical classes, such as benzenoids, ketones, alcohols, sulfide, alkanes, and pyrazines, were identified. One of these VOCs, nonan-2-one, was validated in vitro as a bioactive compound capable of promoting rice growth. Although further analyses are necessary to properly elucidate the molecular mechanisms, our results suggest that these two bacterial isolates are potential candidates as sources for bioproducts, contributing to a more sustainable agriculture.

Co-cultivation of Mortierellaceae with Pseudomonas helmanticensis affects both their growth and volatilome

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) might mediate microbial interactions, especially in spatially structured environments, such as soil. However, the variety and specificity of VOC production are poorly understood. Here, we studied 25 Mortierellaceae strains belonging to the genera Linnemannia and Entomortierella in both pure and co-culture with Pseudomonas helmanticensis under laboratory conditions. We analysed both the fungal growth depending on co-cultivation and the cultures' volatilomes applying proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS and GC-MS). In a strain-specific manner, we found the fungi's radial growth rate and colony morphology affected by the presence of P. helmanticensis. The fungus seemed to generally reduce the bacterial growth. The volatilomes of the fungal and bacterial pure and co-cultures were diverse. While the fungi frequently consumed VOCs, P. helmanticensis produced a higher diversity and amount of VOCs than any fungal strain. Our results support that both the pure and co-culture volatilomes are taxonomically conserved. Taken together, our data supports the relevance of VOCs in Mortierellaceae-P. helmanticensis interaction. We also discuss individual VOCs that appear relevant in the interaction.
