Abstract
Sarcopenia is a progressive systemic skeletal muscle disease induced by various physiological and pathological factors, including aging, malnutrition, denervation, and cardiovascular diseases, manifesting as the decline of skeletal muscle mass and function. Both exercise and nutrition produce beneficial effects on skeletal muscle growth and are viewed as feasible strategies to prevent sarcopenia. Mechanisms involve regulating blood flow, oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, protein synthesis and degradation, and satellite cell activation through exerkines and gut microbiomes. In this review, we summarized and discussed the latest progress and future development of the above mechanisms for providing a theoretical basis and ideas for the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia.

Abstract
Muscular strength and endurance are vital for physical fitness. While mistletoe extract has shown efficacy in significantly increasing muscle strength and endurance, its accessibility is limited. This study explores combining mistletoe and apple peel extracts as an effective muscle health supplement. Analyses of histology, RNA, and protein in the combined extract-treated mouse group demonstrated significant enhancements in muscle strength and endurance, evidenced by larger muscle fibers, improved mitochondrial function, and a higher ratio of type I and IIa muscle fibers. Combining half doses of each extract resulted in greater improvements than using each extract separately, indicating a synergistic effect. Pathway analysis suggests that the observed synergy arises from complementary mechanisms, with a mistletoe extract-induced decrease in myostatin (MSTN) and an apple peel extract-induced increase in IGF1, leading to a sharp rise in AKT, S6K, and MuRF1, which promote myogenesis, along with a significant increase in PGC-1α, TFAM, and MEF2C, which are critical for mitochondrial biogenesis. This research provides practical insights into developing cost-effective, natural supplements to enhance muscle performance and endurance, with potential applications in athletic performance, improving muscle growth and endurance in children, and addressing age-related muscle decline.

Abstract
Background Resistance training often increases muscle size, a phenomenon known as muscle hypertrophy. These morphological adaptations were typically documented to occur in a non-uniform pattern. Investigating the specific morphological adaptations to different training programs was of interest. Objectives This study aimed to investigate two resistance training programs, a high-intensity program (HI) and a combined high-intensity with low-intensity blood flow restriction program (MIX), on morphological adaptations of vastus lateralis muscle in healthy young men. Methods Eighteen active participants were recruited and randomly assigned to the HI (n = 10) or MIX (n = 8) groups, undergoing different 6-week resistance training programs. The training volume set was equated and progressively increased from three sets in weeks 1 and 2 to six sets, and eight sets in weeks 3-4 and 5-6, respectively. Three specific regions of vastus lateralis were assessed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound imaging (US) during pre-and post-intervention. Results Statistical analysis revealed statistically significant increases in muscle area at the proximal (HI: Δ12%, MIX: Δ9.2%), middle (HI: Δ8.7%, MIX: Δ9.0%), and distal (HI: Δ14%, MIX: Δ13%) regions. Additionally, both HI and MIX groups showed statistically significant increases in the sum of muscle thickness post-intervention (HI: Δ12%, MIX: Δ19%) and in the sum of fascia thickness post-intervention (HI: Δ27%, MIX: Δ54%). Despite the MIX group training with higher volume load, no statistical differences were observed between groups for any week. Conclusion These findings suggested that both HI and MIX programs effectively induced increases in muscle area and sums of muscle and fascia thickness in healthy young men, allowing practitioners to choose either program based on individual preferences and constraints.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Concurrent Exercise Training (CET) is defined as an exercise training mode in which aerobic and resistance exercises are performed in the same session. OBJECTIVES The effects of CET in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are inconclusive. Therefore, the objective of the present systematic review with a meta-analysis is to evaluate the effects of CET on metabolic markers, body composition, lipid profile, inflammation, and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in people with T2DM. METHODS Five electronic databases were searched from inception up to January 2023. The eligibility criteria included prospective studies that had T2DM participants aged between 35 and 65 years who performed CET at least 2 times/week for a minimum duration of 8 weeks with a control group. RESULTS Seven studies were identified for qualitative review. Sufficient data were not available for one study, therefore, meta-analysis was performed in six studies. A significant effect was observed in glucose level (p < .01); glycated hemoglobin (p = .02); Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (p = .02); body mass index (p = .02); %body fat (p < .01); %fat-free mass (p < .01); waist circumference (p = .03); triglyceride (p < .01); peak oxygen uptake (p < .01); and tumor necrotic factor -α (p < .01). CONCLUSIONS The CET is effective in improving metabolic markers, body composition, lipid profile, inflammation, and CRF in people with T2DM and can be included in the management of T2DM. The overall evidence for this conclusion may be influenced by bias in included studies.

Abstract
As one of the largest tissues in the animal body, skeletal muscle plays a pivotal role in the production and quality of pork. Consequently, it is of paramount importance to investigate the growth and developmental processes of skeletal muscle. Lijiang pigs, which naturally have two subtypes, fast-growing and slow-growing, provide an ideal model for such studies by eliminating breed-related influences. In this study, we selected three fast-growing and three slow-growing 6-month-old Lijiang pigs as subjects. We utilized assay for transposase-accessible chromatin with sequencing (ATAC-seq) combined with genomics, RNA sequencing, and proteomics to screen for differentially expressed genes and transcription factors linked to increased longissimus dorsi muscle volume in Lijiang pigs. We identified 126 genes through ATAC-seq, including PPARA, TNRC6B, NEDD1, and FKBP5, that exhibited differential expression patterns during muscle growth. Additionally, we identified 59 transcription factors, including Foxh1, JunB, Mef2 family members (Mef2a/b/c/d), NeuroD1, and TEAD4. By examining open chromatin regions (OCRs) with significant genetic differentiation, genes such as SAV1, CACNA1H, PRKCG, and FGFR4 were found. Integrating ATAC-seq with transcriptomics and transcriptomics with proteomics, we identified differences in open chromatin regions, transcription, and protein levels of FKBP5 and SCARB2 genes in fast-growing and slow-growing Lijiang pigs. Utilizing multi-omics analysis with R packages, we jointed ATAC-seq, transcriptome, and proteome datasets, identifying enriched pathways related to glycogen metabolism and skeletal muscle cell differentiation. We pinpointed genes such as MYF6 and HABP2 that exhibit strong correlations across these diverse data types. This study provides a multi-faceted understanding of the molecular mechanisms that lead to differences in pig muscle fiber growth.

Abstract
Females historically experience sleep disturbances and overall poor sleep compared to males. Creatine has been proposed to impact sleep; however, the effects are not well known. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of creatine supplementation on sleep among naturally menstruating females. Twenty-one participants completed a double-blind, randomized controlled trial in which they consumed 5 g creatine + 5 g maltodextrin or placebo, 10 g maltodextrin, daily for 6 weeks. Participants completed resistance training 2x/week using the TONAL® (Tonal Systems Inc., San Francisco, CA, USA) at-home gym. Pre- and post-testing assessed body composition, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), dietary intake, and muscular strength. Sleep was assessed nightly using an ŌURA® (Oulu, Finland) ring. Compared to the placebo group, those consuming creatine experienced significant increases in total sleep on training days (p = 0.013). No significant changes in chronic sleep and PSQI (pre-post) were observed. There was a significant increase in TONAL® strength score over time (p < 0.001), with no between-group differences. Participants reduced their total calorie (kcal) (p = 0.039), protein (g/kg) (p = 0.009), carbohydrate (g/kg) (p = 0.023), and fat (g) (p = 0.036) intake over time. Creatine supplementation increases sleep duration on resistance training days in naturally menstruating females.

Abstract
Obesity remains a medical issue of great concern. Behavioural methods attempting to induce weight loss have largely failed because of a minimal understanding of stress- and depression-associated psychosocial correlates. This study extended research into the effects of exercise on weight loss through psychological pathways to improve treatments. Women with obesity (N = 108), participating in an original theory-driven cognitive-behavioural treatment within community-based health promotion centres, were evaluated over 24 months. Their mean scores on anxiety, depression, and anger at baseline were significantly higher than normative data from a general sample of United States women. Three serial mediation models were specified assessing mediation of the significant exercise→dietary change relationship. These yielded two significant paths: changes in exercise→anxiety→anxiety-associated emotional eating→self-efficacy→diet, and changes in exercise→depression→depression-associated emotional eating→self-efficacy→diet; and one non-significant path: changes in exercise→anger→anger-associated emotional eating→self-efficacy→diet. In a subsequent moderated moderation model, change in eating-related self-regulation moderated the relationship between changes in anxiety and anxiety-associated emotional eating, where exercise-associated self-regulation moderated effects from eating-related self-regulation. Dietary improvement was significantly related to weight loss over 6 (β = -0.40), 12 (β = -0.42), and 24 (β = -0.33) months. Findings indicated an increased treatment focus on the completion of moderate amounts of exercise for weight loss and, following that, attention to improvements in anxiety, depression, anxiety- and depression-associated emotional eating, self-efficacy for controlled eating, and the transfer of exercise-related self-regulation to eating-related self-regulation. Given the scope of the obesity problem, extensions of this research within field settings are warranted to accelerate application opportunities.

Abstract
Despite some reported benefits, there is a low quality of evidence for resistance training (RT) improving metabolic health of individuals with overweight or obesity. We evaluated the impact of RT on body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and physical performance, lipid-lipoprotein profile, inflammation, and glucose-insulin homeostasis in 51 postmenopausal women versus 29 controls matched for age, obesity, and physical activity. Exercised women were further subdivided for comparison of RT effects into those presenting metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) and those with metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUHO) classified according to Karelis and Rabasa-Lhoret or an approach based on adipose tissue secretory dysfunction using the plasma adiponectin(A)/leptin (L) ratio. Participants followed a 4-month weekly RT program targeting major muscle groups (3 × 10 repetitions at 80% one repetition maximum (1-RM)). Percent fat marginally decreased and lean body mass increased (0.01 < p < 0.05) while CRF and muscular strength improved in all women, after RT (effect size (ES): 0.11-1.21 (trivial to large effects), p ˂ 0.01). Fasting plasma triacylglycerol and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels slightly increased and decreased, respectively, in participants with MHO using the A/L ratio approach (ES: -0.47 to 1.07 (small to large effects), p ˂ 0.05). Circulating interleukin-6 soluble receptor decreased in both groups and soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor-1/soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor-2 in women with MUHO only, irrespective of definition (ES: -0.42 to -0.84 (small to large effects), p ˂ 0.05). Glucose-insulin homeostasis was unchanged regardless of group or definition. RT improved physical performance and body composition but had a lesser impact on cardiometabolic risk in women with obesity, irrespective of their metabolic phenotype.

Abstract
Physical activity and exercise training programs are integral part of a comprehensive obesity management approach. In persons with overweight or obesity, exercise training, specifically aerobic (i.e. endurance) training, is associated with significant additional weight loss compared to the absence of training. However the magnitude of effect remains modest amounting to only 2-3 kg additional weight loss on average. Comparable effects have been observed for total fat loss. Exercise training, specifically aerobic training, is also associated with decreased abdominal visceral fat as assessed by imaging techniques, which is likely to benefit cardiometabolic health in persons with obesity. Based on data from controlled trials with randomization after prior weight loss, the evidence for weight maintenance with exercise training is as yet not conclusive, although retrospective analyses point to the value of relatively high-volume exercise in this regard. Resistance (i.e. muscle-strengthening) training is specifically advised for lean mass preservation during weight loss. Given the relatively limited effect of exercise training on weight loss as such, the changes in physical fitness brought about by exercise training cannot be overlooked as they provide major health benefits to persons with obesity. Aerobic, as well as combined aerobic and resistance training, increase cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max) while resistance training, but not aerobic training, improves muscle strength even in the absence of a significant change in muscle mass. Regarding the overall management strategy, adherence in the long term to new lifestyle habits remains a challenging issue to be addressed by further research.

Abstract
The integration of resistance training for cardiac patients leads to important health outcomes that are not optimally obtained with aerobic exercise; these include an increase in muscle mass, maintenance of bone mineral density, and improvements in muscular fitness parameters. Despite the proliferation of evidence supporting resistance exercise in recent decades, the implementation of resistance training is underutilised, and prescription is often sub-optimal in cardiac patients. This is frequently associated with safety concerns and inadequate methods of practical exercise prescription. This review discusses the potential application of cluster sets to prescribe interval resistance training in cardiac populations. The addition of planned, regular passive intra-set rest periods (cluster sets) in resistance training (i.e., interval resistance training) may be a practical solution for reducing the magnitude of haemodynamic responses observed with traditional resistance training. This interval resistance training approach may be a more suitable option for cardiac patients. Additionally, many cardiac patients present with impaired exercise tolerance; this model of interval resistance training may be a more suitable option to reduce fatigue, increase patient tolerance and enhance performance to these workloads. Practical strategies to implement interval resistance training for cardiac patients are also discussed. Preliminary evidence suggests that interval resistance training may lead to safer acute haemodynamic responses in cardiac patients. Future research is needed to determine the efficacy and feasibility of interval resistance training for health outcomes in this population.

Abstract
Background: Tennis is among the world's most popular and well-studied sports. Physical training has commonly been used as an intervention among athletes. However, a comprehensive review of the literature on the effects of physical training programs on female tennis players' performance is lacking. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the effects of physical training on performance outcomes in female tennis players. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted on Web of Science, PubMed, SPORTDicus, Scopus, and CNKI from inception until July 2023 to select relevant articles from the accessible literature. Only controlled trials were included if they examined the effects of physical training on at least one measure of tennis-specific performance in female tennis players. The Cochrane RoB tool was employed to assess the risk of bias. The CERT scale was used to examine the quality of program information. The GRADE approach was adopted to evaluate the overall quality of the evidence. The Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software was used for the meta-analysis. Results: Nine studies were selected for the systematic review and seven for the meta-analysis, totaling 222 individuals. The study's exercise programs lasted 6-36 weeks, with training sessions ranging from 30 to 80 min, conducted one to five times per week. Muscle power (ES = 0.72; p = 0.003), muscle strength (ES = 0.65; p = 0.002), agility (ES = 0.69; p = 0.002), serve velocity (ES = 0.72; p = 0.013), and serve accuracy (ES = 1.14; p = 0.002) demonstrated significant improvement following physical training, while no notable changes in linear sprint speed (ES = 0.63; p = 0.07) were detected. Conclusion: Although research on physical training in sports is diversified, studies on training interventions among female tennis players are scarce. This review found that existing training programs yield some favorable outcomes for female tennis players. However, further research with high methodological quality is warranted on the tailoring of specific training programs for female tennis players. There should be more consistent measuring and reporting of data to facilitate meaningful data pooling for future meta-analyses.

Abstract
Alcohol intake is a major modifiable risk factor for many diseases. Alcohol can also damage skeletal muscle health during ageing which in turn increases risk of sarcopenia, frailty and falls but this relationship is understudied. The aim of this study was to model the relationship between a full range of alcohol consumption and components of sarcopenic risk, skeletal muscle mass and function, in middle-aged and younger older-aged men and women. A cross-sectional analyses was undertaken of 196,561 white participants from the UK Biobank with longitudinal analysis also in 12,298 of these participants, with outcome measures for the latter repeated after around four years. For the cross-sectional analysis fractional polynomial curves were fitted in models of measures of skeletal muscle mass, appendicular lean mass/body mass index (ALM/BMI), fat-free mass as a percentage of body weight (FFM%) and grip strength, all predicted from alcohol consumption with models fitted for men and women separately. Alcohol consumption at baseline was based on the mean of up to five dietary recalls, typically over 16 months. Linear regression was used for longitudinal analyses to model the effects of alcohol consumption groups on these measures. All models were adjusted for covariates. In the cross-sectional analysis, modelled values of the muscle mass measures all showed a peak at medium levels of alcohol consumption and a steep decline with increasing alcohol consumption. Modelled differences in muscle mass from zero consumption of alcohol to 160 g/d ranged from 3.6 to 4.9% for ALM/BMI for men and women, respectively, and 3.6 to 6.1% for FFM%. Grip strength consistently increased with alcohol consumption. No association between alcohol consumption and muscle measures were seen in the longitudinal results. Our results suggest that higher levels of alcohol consumption could have detrimental effects on muscle mass in middle- and older-aged men and women.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to investigate the effects of water-based exercise (WBE) on body composition. METHODS Trials published up to October 28, 2022 were searched using the PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane, Scopus, and Ovid databases. Randomized controlled trials of healthy adults published in English, comparing WBE and control groups, were included. Other studies with different research designs and participants with medical diagnoses were excluded. The main outcome measures were body weight (BW), body fat mass (BFM), body fat percentage (BFP), lean mass (LM), and skeletal muscle mass (SMM). RESULTS Overall, 17,458 potential studies were identified. After a closer inspection, 79 full-length articles were considered for further screening. Finally, 20 studies, involving 565 participants, were included in the meta-analysis. The WBE was beneficial in reducing BW, BFM, and BFP and increasing LM and SMM. Subgroup analyses were conducted based on different exercise intensities and times per week. Moderate- or moderate-vigorous-intensity exercise helped improve body composition, while lower-intensity WBE or aquatic high-intensity interval training (HIIT) seemed less helpful. Training for <120 min/week was insufficient to improve body composition. Training for >120 min/week was associated with improvements in body composition. CONCLUSIONS Moderate- or moderate-vigorous-intensity WBE helps improve body composition. Adults are encouraged to exercise for >120 min/week.

Abstract
This 12-week study investigates the effects of resistance training with different set structures on the plasma levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), nerve growth factor (NGF), and obesity-related markers in middle-aged Korean women with obesity. A total of 40 middle-aged women with obesity (mean age, 59.87 ± 2.80 years) were enrolled in this study; only 31 women were able to complete the 12-week exercise period. The participants were randomly divided into the following four groups: control (CON, n = 8), drop set system (Drop, n = 8), descending set system (Descend, n = 7), and ascending set system (Ascend, n = 8). Body composition was recorded, and blood samples were obtained and evaluated before and after the 12-week exercise period intervention. Two groups showed no significant differences in body weight, body fat percentage, and body mass index before and after the 12-week exercise period. However, significant differences were observed in the blood levels of BDNF, NGF, adiponectin, leptin, and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). BDNF and NGF showed significant differences in both time and interaction effects. Post hoc analysis revealed that the Drop group had higher BDNF and NFG levels than those of the Ascend and CON groups, while there was a significant increase in the levels of these biomarkers in the Descend and Drop groups in the time comparison. Adiponectin levels also showed significant differences in both time and interaction effects. Post hoc analysis revealed that the Drop and Descend groups had higher adiponectin levels than those of the CON group. Leptin levels decreased significantly in the Descend and Drop groups over time. GLP-1 levels showed no significant differences between the groups; however, there were significant differences in both time and interaction effects. Post hoc analysis revealed that the Drop group had lower GLP-1 levels than those of the CON group. This study suggests that resistance training with different set structures can have varying effects on the blood levels of different biomarkers in middle-aged women with obesity. These findings have implications for exercise prescription, and may provide insights into the mechanisms underlying the beneficial outcomes of resistance training in middle-aged Korean women with obesity.

Objetivo: revisar los tipos de entrenamientos físicos de ensayos controlados aleatorizados publicados en la base de datos PubMed entre los años 2015 a 2022 sobre los cambios en la composición corporal en mujeres adultas de 18 a 65 años con obesidad. Metodología: se utilizó a modo de filtro la “Herramienta de Evaluación de Calidad Validada para Estudios Cuantitativos”. Resultados: la búsqueda arrojó 586 artículos, de los cuales el 93.85% fueron eliminados; 6.14% pasaron por un filtro que dejó un total de 1.7%. Conclusión: en mujeres adultas con obesidad, se ha demostrado que todos los tipos de entrenamiento físico sirven para generar cambios en la composición corporal.

It is known to be associated with a wide variety of diseases; in obese women, the ideal way to carry out an adequate physical prescription is still unknown. Objective: to review the types of physical training in randomized controlled trials published in the PubMed database between 2015 and 2022 on changes in body composition in adult women aged 18 to 65 with obesity. Methodology: the "Validated Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies" was used as a filter. Outcomes: the search yielded 586 articles, of which 93.85% were eliminated; 6.14% went through a filter that left a total of 1.7%.
