Abstract
Daily eating/fasting cycles synchronise circadian peripheral clocks, involved in the regulation of the cardiovascular system. However, the associations of daily meal and fasting timing with cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence remain unclear. We used data from 103,389 adults in the NutriNet-Santé study. Meal timing and number of eating occasions were estimated from repeated 24 h dietary records. We built multivariable Cox proportional-hazards models to examine their association with the risk of CVD, coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular disease. In this study, having a later first meal (later than 9AM compared to earlier than 8AM) and last meal of the day (later than 9PM compared to earlier than 8PM) was associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular outcomes, especially among women. Our results suggest a potential benefit of adopting earlier eating timing patterns, and coupling a longer nighttime fasting period with an early last meal, rather than breakfast skipping, in CVD prevention.

Abstract
Lockdown imposed in the early phase of the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak represented a specific setting where activity was restricted but still possible. The aim was to investigate the cross-sectional associations between physical activity (PA) and SARS-CoV-2 infection in a French population-based cohort. Participants completed a PA questionnaire. PA was classified into: (i) total PA; (ii) aerobic PA by intensity; (iii) strengthening PA; (iv) PA by domain and type; and (vii) by location. Sedentary time was also recorded. Seroprevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies was assessed. Multivariable logistic regression models controlling for sociodemographic, lifestyle, anthropometric data, health status, and adherence to recommended protective anti-SARS-CoV-2 behaviours were computed. From 22,165 participants included, 21,074 (95.1%) and 1091 (4.9%) had a negative and positive ELISA-S test result, respectively. Total PA, vigorous PA, leisure-time PA, household PA, outdoor PA and indoor PA were all associated with lower probability of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Observations made in such a setting shed light on PA possibilities in a context of restricted mobility, where the health benefits of PA should not be overlooked. Along with already well-established benefits of PA for non-communicable disease prevention, these findings provide additional evidence for policies promoting all types of PA as a lever for population health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Food intake plays a pivotal role in regulating circadian rhythms, which modulate glucose and lipid homeostasis. However, studies investigating the association of meal timing and type 2 diabetes (T2D) incidence are lacking. The objective of this study was to investigate the longitudinal associations of meal timing, number of eating occasions and night-time fasting duration with incidence of T2D. METHODS In total, 103 312 adults [79% women, mean age at baseline = 42.7 (SD = 14.6)] from the NutriNet-Santé cohort (2009-21) were included. Participants' meal timings and frequency were assessed using repeated 24-h dietary records and averaged from the first 2 years of follow-up (5.7 records/participant). Associations of meal timing, number of eating occasions and night-time fasting duration with incidence of T2D were assessed by using multivariable Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for known risk factors. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 7.3 years, 963 new cases of T2D were ascertained. Compared with participants habitually having a first meal before 8AM, those eating after 9AM had a higher incidence of T2D (HR = 1.59, 95% CI 1.30-1.94). Time of last meal was not associated with T2D incidence. Each additional eating episode was associated with a lower incidence of T2D (HR = 0.95, 95% CI 0.90-0.99). Night-time fasting duration was not associated with T2D incidence, except in participants having breakfast before 8AM and fasting for >13 h overnight (HR = 0.47, 95% CI 0.27-0.82). CONCLUSIONS In this large prospective study, a later first meal was associated with a higher incidence of T2D. If confirmed in other large-scale studies, an early breakfast should be considered in preventing T2D.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Individuals with Lynch syndrome (LS) have a high lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC) due to genetic alterations. Nutrition is one of the main modifiable risk factors for sporadic CRC, however this has not been established in LS patients. The present study aimed to give a detailed overview of dietary intakes in individuals with LS, and associated individual characteristics. METHODS Dietary behaviours of individuals with LS from the AAS-Lynch clinical trial (2017-2022) were obtained using a food frequency questionnaire. Dietary intakes, food group consumption and overall diet quality (dietary patterns, adherence to the Mediterranean diet) were described according to sociodemographic, anthropometric and clinical characteristics, and compared to participants without LS from the NutriNet-Santé study (matched on sex, age, BMI and region). RESULTS 280 individuals with LS were included in this analysis and matched with 547 controls. Compared to controls, LS patients consumed less fibre, legumes, fruit and vegetables and more red and processed meat (all p < 0.01). They also had a lower Mediterranean diet score (p = 0.002). Among LS patients, men, younger patients, or those with disadvantaged situation had a diet of poorer nutritional quality with lower adherence to a "Healthy" diet (all p ≤ 0.01). LS Patients with prevalent CRC had a higher consumption of dairy products than recommended, while those with prevalent adenoma consumed more vegetables, and less sugar and sweets (all p ≤ 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Although patients with LS were aware of their high lifetime risk of developing cancer, their diets were not optimal and included nutritional risk factors associated to CRC.

Abstract
Physical activity and exercise training programs are integral part of a comprehensive obesity management approach. In persons with overweight or obesity, exercise training, specifically aerobic (i.e. endurance) training, is associated with significant additional weight loss compared to the absence of training. However the magnitude of effect remains modest amounting to only 2-3 kg additional weight loss on average. Comparable effects have been observed for total fat loss. Exercise training, specifically aerobic training, is also associated with decreased abdominal visceral fat as assessed by imaging techniques, which is likely to benefit cardiometabolic health in persons with obesity. Based on data from controlled trials with randomization after prior weight loss, the evidence for weight maintenance with exercise training is as yet not conclusive, although retrospective analyses point to the value of relatively high-volume exercise in this regard. Resistance (i.e. muscle-strengthening) training is specifically advised for lean mass preservation during weight loss. Given the relatively limited effect of exercise training on weight loss as such, the changes in physical fitness brought about by exercise training cannot be overlooked as they provide major health benefits to persons with obesity. Aerobic, as well as combined aerobic and resistance training, increase cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max) while resistance training, but not aerobic training, improves muscle strength even in the absence of a significant change in muscle mass. Regarding the overall management strategy, adherence in the long term to new lifestyle habits remains a challenging issue to be addressed by further research.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Explicit weight bias is an underlying cause of weight stigma, but its associations with individual characteristics are not well known. This study aimed to assess explicit weight bias in French adults and to explore the associations with weight status and sociodemographic characteristics. METHODS Adults from the NutriNet-Santé cross-sectional study (France, 2020, n=33,948, 52% women after weighting procedures) completed the Anti-Fat Attitudes Questionnaire assessing three dimensions: Dislike (antipathy toward people with obesity), Fear of fat (concerns about body weight), and Willpower (belief in weight controllability). Associations with weight status and sociodemographic characteristics were examined using multivariable ANCOVA models in 2022. RESULTS Fear of fat and Willpower scores were higher than Dislike scores (mean [SD]=4.0 [2.0], 3.3 [1.7] and 1.9 [1.3], respectively). Fear of fat was higher among women, whereas Dislike and Willpower were higher among men (all p<0.0001). Obesity was associated with greater Fear of fat scores (p<0.0001, mean difference versus normal-weight participants [95% CI]=0.35 [0.24, 0.46] in women, 0.36 [0.17, 0.56] in men), lower Dislike scores (-0.38 [-0.45, -0.32] in women, -0.43 [-0.56, -0.30] in men), and lower Willpower scores (-1.00 [-0.18, -0.90] in women, -0.40 [-0.57, -0.23] in men). In both genders, lower income was associated with lower Dislike, Fear of fat, and Willpower scores (all p<0.0001), and lower education was associated with greater Fear of fat and Willpower scores (all p<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Explicit weight bias was driven by the fear of gaining weight and the belief in weight controllability. This study provides new insights into which population subgroups should be targeted by interventions aimed at reducing explicit weight bias.

Abstract
Background: Acrylamide is classified as a probable human carcinogen by the IARC but epidemiological evidence on the carcinogenicity of acrylamide from dietary sources is limited. This study aimed to investigate the associations between dietary acrylamide and breast cancer risk in the NutriNet-Santé cohort. Methods: This prospective cohort study included 80,597 French women (mean [SD] age at baseline: 40.8 [14] years) during a mean (SD) follow-up of 8.8 (2.3) years. Acrylamide intake was evaluated using repeated 24h dietary records (n= 5.5 [SD 3.0]), linked to a comprehensive food composition database. Associations between acrylamide intake and breast cancer risk (overall, premenopausal and post-menopausal) were assessed by Cox hazard models adjusted for known risk factors. Results: The mean (SD) dietary acrylamide intake was 30.1 (21.9) µg/d (main contributors: coffee, potato fries and chips, pastries and cakes, and bread). During follow-up, 1016 first incident breast cancer cases were diagnosed (431 premenopausal, 585 postmenopausal). A borderline significant positive association was observed between acrylamide intake and breast cancer risk overall (HRQ4 vs Q1= 1.21 [95% CI: 1.00-1.47]) and a positive association was observed with premenopausal cancer (HRQ4 vs Q1= 1.40 [95% CI: 1.04-1.88]). Restricted cubic spline analyses suggested evidence for non-linearity of these associations, with higher HR for intermediate (Q2) and high (Q4) exposures. Receptor-specific analyses revealed a positive association with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer, which represented 86% of total cancer cases. Acrylamide intake was not associated with post-menopausal breast cancer. Conclusions: Results from this large prospective cohort study suggest the potential deleterious role of dietary acrylamide in breast cancer etiology, especially in premenopausal women, and provide new insights that should encourage further mitigation strategies to reduce the content of acrylamide in food.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The deleterious effects of trans fatty acids (TFAs) on cardiovascular health are well established; however, their impact on type 2 diabetes remains poorly understood. In particular, little is known about the impact of specific TFA types on type 2 diabetes etiology. We aimed to explore the associations between different types of TFAs (total, ruminant, industry produced [iTFAs], and corresponding specific isomers) and risk of type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A total of 105,551 participants age >18 years from the French NutriNet-Santé cohort (2009-2021) were included (mean baseline age 42.7 years; SD 14.6 years); 79.2% were women. Dietary intake data, including usual TFA intake, were collected using repeated 24-h dietary records (n = 5.7; SD 3.1). Associations between sex-specific quartile of dietary TFAs and diabetes risk were assessed using multivariable Cox models. RESULTS Total TFA intake was associated with higher type 2 diabetes risk (hazard ratio [HR]quartile 4 vs. 1 1.38; 95% CI 1.11-1.73; Ptrend < 0.001; n = 969 incident cases). This association, specifically observed for iTFAs (HR 1.45; 95% CI 1.15-1.83; Ptrend < 0.001), was mainly driven by elaidic acid (HR 1.37; 95% CI 1.09-1.72; Ptrend < 0.001) and linolelaidic acid (HR 1.29; 95% CI 1.04-1.58; Ptrend = 0.07). In contrast, ruminant TFAs were not significantly associated with risk of type 2 diabetes. CONCLUSIONS In this large prospective cohort, higher intakes of total and iTFAs were associated with increased type 2 diabetes risk. These findings support the World Health Organization's recommendation to eliminate iTFAs from the food supply worldwide. Consumers should be advised to limit the consumption of food products containing partially hydrogenated oils (main vector of iTFAs). This may contribute to lowering the substantial global burden of type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
Skipping breakfast and late-night-eating have been associated with risk factors for type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, less is known about the link between daily timing and frequency of food intake and risk of developing T2D. The objective of the present study is to investigate the associations between circadian nutritional behaviours, defined by meal timings and frequency, and risk of T2D. 103,312 adults (79% females, mean age at baseline=42.7) from the French NutriNet-Santé cohort were included. Participants’ circadian nutritional behaviours were assessed using repeated 24 h dietary records. Associations of time of first and last meal of the day, meal frequency and of nighttime fasting duration with risk of T2D were assessed by multivariable Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for known risk factors. During a median follow-up of 7.3 years, 963 new cases of T2D were ascertained. Compared with subjects reporting on average a first meal before 8AM, those having a first meal after 9AM had a higher risk of developing T2D, HR = 1.59 (1.30 to 1.94). A late time of last meal (after 9PM) was associated with a higher risk of T2D, HR = 1.28 (1.06 to 1.54), but this association was no longer significant after adjusting for time of first meal. Each additional eating episode was associated with a reduction of the risk of T2D, HR = 0.95 (0.90 to 0.99), p-value=0.01. Overall, nighttime fasting duration was not associated with risk of T2D, except in participants having breakfast before 8AM after a nighttime fasting duration of more than 13 hours (HR = 0.47, 0.27 to 0.82). In this large prospective study, circadian nutritional behaviours were associated with risk of T2D. Daytime nutritional behaviours and specifically an early first meal was associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. If confirmed in other largescale studies, an early breakfast should be considered in preventive strategies for type 2 diabetes.

Meal timings and daily night-time fasting periods can synchronise the circadian system, which regulates the cardiovascular system. The present study aims to evaluate the prospective associations between circadian nutritional behaviours, defined by meal timing and frequency, and the risk of cardiovascular diseases. We used data from 103,389 adults (79% females) in the French NutriNet-Santé study, 2009-2021. Circadian nutritional behaviours were assessed using repeated 24h food records during the first two years of follow-up. We examined the associations between circadian eating behaviours and risk of cardiovascular, coronary heart and cerebrovascular diseases by multivariable Cox proportional hazard models. During a median follow-up of 7.2 years, 2036 incident cardiovascular diseases were diagnosed. A later first meal of the day was associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases (HR per hour increase = 1.06, 95% CI 1.01 - 1.12). A later last meal of the day was associated with a higher risk of cerebrovascular diseases (HR per hour increase = 1.08, 95% CI 1.01 - 1.15). Among women, a later last meal was also associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (HR per hour increase = 1.08, 95% CI 1.01 - 1.15). We found no evidence for an association between night-time fasting duration nor meal frequency, with risk of cardiovascular diseases. This study suggests that the habit of eating a later first meal, and a later last meal (in women) could be associated with a higher risk of developing circulatory diseases. These results need to be confirmed in other largescale studies before they can be transferable to clinical practice.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is one of the most common noncommunicable diseases worldwide, with an increasing prevalence and a considerable global health burden. Substantial evidence has linked consumption of trans fatty acids (TFAs) to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. However, the effects of T2D remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the associations between different types of TFAs (total, ruminant, industrial and corresponding specific isomers) and risk of T2D in the NutriNet-Santé prospective cohort. Overall, 105,551 participants aged 18 years or older from the French NutriNet-Santé cohort (2009-2021) were included (mean age at baseline=42.7y (SD = 14.6y), 79.2% women). Dietary intake data, including usual TFA intake, were collected using repeated 24-hour dietary records (n = 5.7 [SD = 3.1]). Associations between sex-specific quartiles of dietary intake of TFAs and type 2 diabetes risk were assessed using multivariable Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for known risk factors. A total of 969 incident type 2 diabetes cases occured during follow-up. Total TFAs was associated with higher T2D risk (HRfor quartile 4 versus 1=1.38; 95% CI = 1.11-1.73; Ptrend<0.001). This association, specifically observed for industrial TFAs (HR = 1.45; 95% CI = 1.15-1.83; Ptrend<0.001), was mainly driven by elaidic acid (HR = 1.37; 95% CI = 1.09-1.72; Ptrend<0.001) and linolelaidic acid (HR = 1.29; 95% CI = 1.04-1.58; Ptrend=0.07). In contrast, ruminant trans fatty acids were not significantly associated with the risk of T2D. In this large prospective cohort, higher dietary intakes of total and industrial TFAs were associated with increased T2D risk. These findings support WHO's recommendation to eliminate industrially-produced TFAs from the food supply worldwide. As such, consumers should be advised to limit the consumption of food products containing partially hydrogenated oils (main vector of iTFAs) as this, specifically, may contribute to lower the substantial global burden of T2D.

Acrylamide is classified as a probable human carcinogen by the IARC but epidemiological evidence on the carcinogenicity of acrylamide from dietary sources is limited. This study aimed to investigate the associations between dietary acrylamide and breast cancer risk in the NutriNet-Santé cohort.
Methods
This prospective cohort study included 80,597 French women (mean [SD] age at baseline: 40.8 [14] years) during a mean (SD) follow-up of 8.8 (2.3) years. Acrylamide intake was evaluated using repeated 24h dietary records (n = 5.5 [SD 3.0]), linked to a comprehensive food composition database. Associations between acrylamide intake and breast cancer risk (overall, premenopausal and post-menopausal) were assessed by Cox hazard models adjusted for known risk factors.
Results
The mean (SD) dietary acrylamide intake was 30.1 (21.9) µg/d (main contributors: coffee, potato fries and chips, pastries and cakes, and bread). During follow-up, 1016 first incident breast cancer cases were diagnosed (431 premenopausal, 585 postmenopausal). A borderline significant positive association was observed between acrylamide intake and breast cancer risk overall (HRQ4 vs Q1= 1.21 [95% CI: 1.00-1.47]) and a positive association was observed with premenopausal cancer (HRQ4 vs Q1= 1.40 [95% CI: 1.04-1.88]). Restricted cubic spline analyses suggested evidence for non-linearity of these associations, with higher HR for intermediate (Q2) and high (Q4) exposures. Receptor-specific analyses revealed a positive association with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer, which represented 86% of total cancer cases. Acrylamide intake was not associated with post-menopausal breast cancer.
Conclusions
Results from this large prospective cohort study suggest the potential deleterious role of dietary acrylamide in breast cancer etiology, especially in premenopausal women, and provide new insights that should encourage further mitigation strategies to reduce the content of acrylamide in food.

OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate the associations between dietary acrylamide and breast cancer risk in the NutriNet-Santé cohort, accounting for menopausal and hormone receptor status. METHODS This prospective cohort study included 80,597 French females (mean ± SD age at baseline: 40.8 ± 14 y) during a mean ± SD follow-up of 8.8 ± 2.3 y. Acrylamide intake was evaluated using repeated 24-h dietary records (n ± SD = 5.5 ± 3.0), linked to a comprehensive food composition database. Associations between acrylamide intake and breast cancer risk (overall, premenopausal, and postmenopausal) were assessed by Cox hazard models adjusted for known risk factors (sociodemographic, anthropometric, lifestyle, medical history, and nutritional factors). RESULTS The mean ± SD dietary acrylamide intake was 30.1 ± 21.9 µg/d (main contributors: coffee, potato fries and chips, pastries, cakes, bread). Abstract
BACKGROUND COVID-19 lockdowns represent natural experiments where limitations of movement impact on lifestyle behaviors. The aim of this paper was to assess how lockdowns have influenced physical activity and sedentary behaviors among French adults. METHODS 32,409 adults from the NutriNet-Santé study filled out questionnaires in April 2020 (the first 2 weeks after the start of lockdown) and in May 2020 (2 weeks before the lockdown ended). Participants were asked about changes in physical activity level and sitting time, types of physical activity performed, and main reasons for change. RESULTS For decreased physical activity, similar rates were found at the beginning and end of the lockdown (58 and 55%-56 and 53%, in women and men, respectively). For increased physical activity, the figures were lower (20 and 14%-23 and 18%, in women and men, respectively). The participants with a decreasing physical activity evolution were older and more likely to be living in urban areas. The main reasons for (i) decreased physical activity were limitations of movement and not liking indoor exercise, (ii) increased physical activity were to stay physically fit and healthy. Physical activity changes were inversely associated with reported depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Changes in physical activity and sedentary behaviors are heterogenous for both genders during the lockdown.

Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the feasibility and acceptability of exercise and controlled trial methods in adults awaiting or having undergone bariatric surgery (BS). Search methods used to identify relevant articles were inclusion of articles identified in a systematic review, new database search of articles published 2019-2021, and hand searching reference lists. Titles/abstracts and full-texts were screened by two reviewers independently against inclusion criteria: adults awaiting or having undergone BS, controlled trial, exercise group compared with a comparison group without exercise. Twenty-eight articles were reviewed; most interventions were supervised, performed after BS, and lasted ≤13 weeks. Pooled data for exercise intervention attendance and dropout rates were 84% (k = 10) and 5% (k = 19), respectively, though possibly misestimated due to poor/selective reporting. Median study and recruitment duration were 18 weeks and 24 months, respectively, with a pooled enrollment rate of 2.5 participants/month. Pooled data for refusal to participate, enrollment, and retention rates were 23% (k = 16), 43% (k = 18), and 87% (k = 26), respectively. Despite the lack of data available in studies included, exercise and controlled trial methods seem feasible and acceptable for adults awaiting or having undergone BS. To better identify methodological or practical challenges, and assess bias, better reporting of feasibility and acceptability indicators is needed in future studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Resilience, the ability to bounce back or recover from stress, has been associated with several health-related behaviors. However, data on food intake and emotional eating are lacking. OBJECTIVES The objective of this cross-sectional study was to analyze the associations between resilience and diet quality and ultraprocessed food (UPF) and food group consumption, and to assess whether emotional eating was a mediator of these associations. METHODS In 2017, 17,840 participants (73.5% female, mean age = 55.4 ± 14.0 y) of the NutriNet-Santé study completed the Brief Resilience Scale, the revised 21-item Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire, and ≥3 self-administered 24-h dietary records. Diet quality was assessed with the modified French National Nutrition and Health Program Guideline Score. Foods and beverages consumed were categorized according to their degree of processing by the NOVA classification. We assessed the association between resilience and emotional eating using linear regression models. We also assessed the mediating role of emotional eating in the associations between resilience and diet quality, energy intake, and UPF and food group consumption, controlling for sociodemographic characteristics. RESULTS In our study, resilience was negatively associated with emotional eating (P < 0.0001). More resilient participants had greater overall diet quality, greater intakes of seafood, whole-grain foods, fats, unsalted oleaginous fruits, and alcoholic beverages, and lower intakes of UPFs, starchy foods, dairy desserts, sugary fatty products, and sugar and confectionery (all P < 0.05). Emotional eating was a mediator of the inverse associations between resilience and intake of energy, UPFs, dairy desserts, sugary fatty products, and of the positive associations between resilience and alcoholic beverages (all P < 0.05), with a 20-70% mediation. CONCLUSIONS Our findings showed that resilience was associated with an overall better diet quality in the NutriNet-Santé population-based study. These associations were partially explained by emotional eating. These findings suggest that resilience should be considered in the promotion of healthy dietary habits.The study is registered at clinicaltrials.gov as #NCT03335644.

Abstract
Background and objectives
We previously showed in a 6-month randomized controlled trial that resistance training and protein supplementation after bariatric surgery (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, RYGB) improved muscle strength without significant effect on weight loss and body composition changes. We performed a 5-year follow-up study in these subjects with the aim 1) to assess the long-term effect of this exercise training intervention and 2) to analyze associations between habitual physical activity (PA) and weight regain at 5 years.
Methods
Fifty-four out of 76 initial participants (follow-up rate of 71%) completed the 5-year follow-up examination (controls, n = 17; protein supplementation, n = 22; protein supplementation and resistance training, n = 15). We measured body weight and composition (DXA), lower-limb strength (leg-press one-repetition maximum) and habitual PA (Actigraph accelerometers and self-report). Weight regain at 5 years was considered low when <10% of 12-month weight loss.
Results
Mean (SD) time elapse since RYGB was 5.7 (0.9) y. At 5 years, weight loss was 32.8 (10.1) kg, with a mean weight regain of 5.4 (SD 5.9) kg compared with the 12-month assessment. Moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) assessed by accelerometry did not change significantly compared with pre-surgery values (+5.2 [SD 21.7] min/d, P = 0.059), and only 4 (8.2%) patients reported participation in resistance training. Muscle strength decreased over time (overall mean [SD]: -49.9 [53.5] kg, respectively, P<0.001), with no statistically significant difference between exercise training intervention groups. An interquartile increase in MVPA levels was positively associated with lower weight regain (OR [95% CI]: 3.27 [1.41;9.86]).
Conclusions
Early postoperative participation in a resistance training protocol after bariatric surgery was not associated with improved muscle strength after 5 years of follow-up; however, increasing physical activity of at least moderate intensity may promote weight maintenance after surgery. PA may therefore play an important role in the long-term management of patients with obesity after undergoing bariatric procedure.

Abstract
Prader–Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare, genetic, multisymptomatic, neurodevelopmental disease commonly associated with sleep alterations, including sleep-disordered breathing and central disorders of hypersomnolence. Excessive daytime sleepiness represents the main manifestation that should be addressed by eliciting the detrimental effects on quality of life and neurocognitive function from the patients’ caregivers. Patients with PWS have impaired ventilatory control and altered pulmonary mechanics caused by hypotonia, respiratory muscle weakness, scoliosis and obesity. Consequently, respiratory abnormalities are frequent and, in most cases, severe, particularly during sleep. Adults with PWS frequently suffer from sleep apnoea syndrome, sleep hypoxemia and sleep hypoventilation. When excessive daytime sleepiness persists after adequate control of sleep-disordered breathing, a sleep study on ventilatory treatment, followed by an objective measurement of excessive daytime sleepiness, is recommended. These tests frequently identify central disorders of hypersomnolence, including narcolepsy, central hypersomnia or a borderline hypersomnolent phenotype. The use of wake-enhancing drugs (modafinil, pitolisant) is discussed in multidisciplinary expert centres for these kinds of cases to ensure the right balance between the benefits on quality of life and the risk of psychological and cardiovascular side effects.

Abstract
Resilience is a positive psychological trait associated with a lower risk of some physical and mental chronic diseases and could be an important protective factor against eating disorders (EDs). The aim of this study was to assess cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between resilience and ED in a large cohort of French adults. In 2017, a total of 25,000 adults from the NutriNet-Santé cohort completed the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). ED symptoms were measured in 2017 and 2020, with the Sick-Control-One-Fat-Food (SCOFF) questionnaire. Cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between resilience and EDs were analyzed using logistic regression, controlling for sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics. Cross-sectional analyses showed that more resilient participants exhibited EDs less frequently than did less resilient participants (p < 0.0001). Longitudinal analyses showed that, during the three years of follow up, higher resilience was negatively associated with incident EDs (OR: 0.67, 95%CI: 0.61–0.74), persistent EDs (0.46 (0.42–0.51)), and intermittent EDs (0.66 (0.62–0.71)), compared with no ED. More resilient participants were also less likely to have a persistent ED than to recover from EDs (0.73 (0.65–0.82)). This study showed that resilience was associated with less ED symptoms and a higher chance of recovery.

Abstract
Physical activity and exercise have many benefits in persons with obesity, helping with weight loss, body fat loss, abdominal visceral fat loss and possibly with weight maintenance after weight loss. The effect of exercise training (endurance or endurance plus resistance or high-intensity interval training) alone on weight loss as outcome appears relatively modest, amounting to only a few kg. However, endurance training during weight loss has been shown to increase V̇O2max and resistance training during weight loss leads to lower loss in lean body mass and increased muscle strength. In addition, higher physical activity levels improve cardiovascular risk, whatever weight variations. Specifically, physical activity or exercise is part of lifestyle measures for prevention of type 2 diabetes and substantially helps with metabolic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. The importance of physical activity counselling and exercise prescription in the management strategy will depend on specific treatment objectives as defined for a given patient, including weight loss, prevention of weigh regain, prevention of cardio-metabolic comorbidities, lean body mass preservation but also improvement in quality of life or development of social links. The 5 A's strategy consisting in: Ask, Assess, Advise, Agree, Assist (or Arrange) appears well adapted in this setting. Professionals need to be aware of the many barriers patients with obesity may meet on their way to increase habitual physical activity as specific solutions should be proposed. A major challenge is how to improve adherence to new physical activity habits over time.

Abstract
We aimed to assess the effectiveness of exercise training programs in adults with severe obesity undergoing bariatric surgery. A systematic search of controlled trials published up to October 2019 that assigned participants to either a preoperative or postoperative exercise training group or a nonexercise group was performed. Meta-analyses were conducted using random-effects models. Twenty-two training programs were assessed (18 performed after bariatric surgery). The effect of preoperative exercise training on postsurgery outcomes was reported in only one study. Compared with the control condition without exercise, postoperative exercise training led to higher weight loss (N = 14, mean difference [95% CI] = -1.8 [-3.2; -0.4] kg, P = 0.01), fat loss (N = 9, P = 0.01), increase in VO2 max (N = 8, P < 0.0001), and increase in muscle strength (N = 9, P < 0.0001). No significant effect was found on lean body mass (N = 11). Preliminary evidence suggests a beneficial effect of postoperative exercise training on bone mineral density (N = 3, P < 0.001) and weight maintenance after the end of the intervention (N = 2, P < 0.001) but no significant effect on quality of life (N = 2), habitual physical activity (N = 2), or cardiometabolic outcomes (N < 4). In conclusion, exercise training performed after bariatric surgery improves physical fitness and leads to a small additional weight and fat loss and may prevent bone loss and weight regain after bariatric surgery.

Abstract
This systematic review examined the impact of exercise intervention programs on selected cardiometabolic health indicators in adults with overweight or obesity. Three electronic databases were explored for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that included adults with overweight or obesity and provided exercise-training interventions. Effects on blood pressure, insulin resistance (homeostasis model of insulin resistance, HOMA-IR), and magnetic resonance measures of intrahepatic fat in exercise versus control groups were analyzed using random effects meta-analyses. Fifty-four articles matched inclusion criteria. Exercise training reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure (mean difference, MD = -2.95 mmHg [95% CI -4.22, -1.68], p < 0.00001, I2 = 63% and MD = -1.93 mmHg [95% CI -2.73, -1.13], p < 0.00001, I2 = 54%, 60 and 58 study arms, respectively). Systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased also when considering only subjects with hypertension. Exercise training significantly decreased HOMA-IR (standardized mean difference, SMD = -0.34 [-0.49, -0.18], p < 0.0001, I2 = 48%, 37 study arms), with higher effect size in subgroup of patients with type 2 diabetes (SMD = -0.50 [95% CI: -0.83, -0.17], p = 0.003, I2 = 39%). Intrahepatic fat decreased significantly after exercise interventions (SMD = -0.59 [95% CI: -0.78, -0.41], p < 0.00001, I2 = 0%), with a larger effect size after high-intensity interval training. In conclusion, exercise training is effective in improving cardiometabolic health in adults with overweight or obesity also when living with comorbitidies.

Abstract
This systematic review examined the impact of exercise training interventions on energy intake (EI) and appetite control in adults with overweight/obesity (≥18 years including older adults). Articles were searched up to October 2019. Changes in EI, fasting appetite sensations, and eating behavior traits were examined with random effects meta-analysis, and other outcomes were synthesized qualitatively. Forty-eight articles were included (median [range] BMI = 30.6 [27.0-38.4] kg/m2 ). Study quality was rated as poor, fair, and good in 39, seven, and two studies, respectively. Daily EI was assessed objectively (N = 4), by self-report (N = 22), with a combination of the two (N = 4) or calculated from doubly labeled water (N = 1). In studies rated fair/good, no significant changes in pre-post daily EI were found and a small but negligible (SMD < 0.20) postintervention difference when compared with no-exercise control groups was observed (five study arms; MD = 102 [1, 203] kcal). There were negligible-to-small pre-post increases in fasting hunger and dietary restraint, decrease in disinhibition, and some positive changes in satiety and food reward/preferences. Within the limitations imposed by the quality of the included studies, exercise training (median duration of 12 weeks) leads to a small increase in fasting hunger and a small change in average EI only in studies rated fair/good. Exercise training may also reduce the susceptibility to overconsumption (PROSPERO: CRD42019157823).

Abstract
This systematic review examined the effect of exercise training interventions on physical fitness in adults with overweight or obesity and compared the effectiveness of different types of exercise training. Four electronic databases were searched. Articles were included if they described randomized controlled trials of exercise training interventions and their effect on maximal oxygen consumption or muscle strength in adults with overweight or obesity. Changes in outcome parameters were analyzed using random effects meta-analyses for different training types (aerobic, resistance, combined aerobic plus resistance, and high-intensity interval training). Eighty-eight articles satisfied the inclusion criteria of which 66 (3964 participants) could be included in the meta-analyses. All training types increased VO2max (mean difference 3.82 ml/min/kg (95% CI 3.17, 4.48), P < 0.00001; I2 = 48%). In direct comparisons, resistance training was less effective in improving VO2max than aerobic training, HIIT was slightly more effective than aerobic training, and no difference between aerobic and combined aerobic plus resistance training was found. For muscle strength benefits, incorporation of resistance exercise in the training program is indicated. Exercise training increases VO2max and muscle strength in adults with overweight or obesity. Differences between training types should be weighed with other needs and preferences when health professionals advise on exercise training to improve physical fitness.

Abstract
This overview of reviews aimed to summarize the effects of exercise training programs on weight loss, changes in body composition, and weight maintenance in adults with overweight or obesity. A systematic search of systematic reviews and meta-analyses (SR-MAs) published between 2010 and December 2019 was performed. Only SR-MAs of controlled trials were included. The mean difference (MD) or standardized MD (SMD) were extracted from SR-MAs. Twelve SR-MAs (149 studies) were included. Exercise led to a significant weight loss (4 SR-MAs, MDs ranging from -1.5 to -3.5 kg), fat loss (4 SR-MAs, MDs ranging from -1.3 to -2.6 kg) and visceral fat loss (3 SR-MAs, SMDs ranging from -0.33 to -0.56). No difference in weight, fat, and visceral loss was found between aerobic and high-intensity interval training as long as energy expenditure was equal. Resistance training reduced lean mass loss during weight loss (1 SR-MA, MD: 0.8 [95%CI: 0.4-1.3] kg). No significant effect of exercise was found on weight maintenance (1 SR-MA). These findings show favorable effects of exercise training on weight loss and body composition changes in adults with overweight or obesity. Visceral fat loss may lead to benefits for cardiometabolic health. More research is needed to identify training modalities that promote weight maintenance.

Abstract
Multicomponent behavior change interventions are typically used in weight management, but results are largely heterogeneous and modest. Determining which techniques (behavior change technique [BCTs]) are more effective in changing behavior is thus required. This study aimed to identify the most effective BCTs for increasing physical activity (PA) in digital and face-to-face behavior change interventions in adults with overweight/obesity. Four databases were searched for eligible studies until October 2019. BCTs were coded using BCTTv1 and MBCT taxonomies. Sixty-two RCTs were included. Meta-regressions were performed to explore BCTs' moderating role. Five BCTs showed significant moderator effects on PA in digital interventions: goal setting behavior, goal setting outcome, graded tasks, social incentive, and self-monitoring of behavior (adjusted R2 's = 0.15-0.51). One BCT showed significant moderator effects on PA in face-to-face interventions, behavioral practice and rehearsal (adjusted R2 = 0.22). Multivariate and sensitivity analysis generally led to similar findings. Effective BCTs for increasing PA in adults with overweight/obesity in digital and face-to-face interventions seem to differ. Evidence suggests that using goal setting, social incentive, and graded tasks might help improve PA in digital interventions while avoiding inconsistent self-monitoring of behavior. In face-to-face interventions, prompting behavioral practice and rehearsal might lead to better PA outcomes. Still, further studies are needed. Implications of the current findings are discussed.

Abstract
There is a need for updated practice recommendations on exercise in the management of overweight and obesity in adults. We summarize the evidence provided by a series of seven systematic literature reviews performed by a group of experts from across Europe. The following recommendations with highest strength (Grade A) were derived. For loss in body weight, total fat, visceral fat, intra-hepatic fat, and for improvement in blood pressure, an exercise training program based on aerobic exercise at moderate intensity is preferentially advised. Expected weight loss is however on average not more than 2 to 3 kg. For preservation of lean mass during weight loss, an exercise training program based on resistance training at moderate-to-high intensity is advised. For improvement in insulin sensitivity and for increasing cardiorespiratory fitness, any type of exercise training (aerobic, resistance, and combined aerobic or resistance) or high-intensity interval training (after thorough assessment of cardiovascular risk and under supervision) can be advised. For increasing muscular fitness, an exercise training program based preferentially on resistance training alone or combined with aerobic training is advised. Other recommendations deal with the beneficial effects of exercise training programs on energy intake and appetite control, bariatric surgery outcomes, and quality of life and psychological outcomes in management of overweight and obesity.

Abstract
This study systematically identified the effects of exercise on multiple psychological outcomes among adults with overweight/obesity, also assessing whether these effects differed across exercise types, genders, age, and body mass index (BMI) categories. Pubmed, Web of Science, PsychInfo, and SportDiscus were searched up to October 2019 for peer-reviewed papers assessing exercise training effects on psychosocial outcomes in adults with overweight/obesity. Thirty-six articles, 32 randomized controlled trials (RCTs), were included in this review. Most interventions were supervised (65%), ranging between 6 and 76 weeks (median = 12). Sixteen psychological outcomes were studied. Exercise induced positive changes in quality of life but did not reduce depression. Large effect sizes were observed on quality of life's physical component, but exercise was also able to improve vitality and mental health. Most psychological outcomes (e.g., body image, anxiety, and perceived stress) are poorly studied, evidencing either conflicting or null exercise effects. Exercise self-efficacy and autonomous motivations were also consistently improved. Exercise types and gender seem to moderate exercise psychological effects. Exercise training programs might lead to positive changes in some psychological outcomes, especially in quality of life, in adults with overweight and obesity, but more studies, with greater systematization in program characteristics, and longer follow-ups are still required to allow more solid conclusions.

J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2020-Muscle strength and power, particularly when assessed during multijoint movements such as vertical jump (VJ), are important predictors of health status and physical function. Vertical jump is mainly used in athletes, also in untrained or older adults, but has not yet been used in subjects with obesity. We aimed to assess the following in this population: (a) the reliability of VJ parameters, (b) their validity compared with isokinetic testing, and (c) their relations with body composition. In 20 women with severe obesity (mean [SD] age: 41.1 [11.6] years; body mass index: 43.9 [4.4] kg·m) without severe orthopedic disorders, VJ parameters, knee extension torque, and body composition were assessed using a force plate, an isokinetic dynamometer, and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, respectively. Excellent reliability was found for absolute peak power and peak force in VJ (intraclass correlation coefficient [95% confidence interval]: 0.95 [0.88-0.98] and 0.90 [0.77-0.96], respectively), and moderate to good validity of peak power and peak force compared with isokinetic torque (r = 0.79 and r = 0.67, respectively; all p < 0.01). Positive relations were found between peak force and peak power during VJ and lean body mass (r = 0.89 and r = 0.60, respectively; p < 0.01) and a negative relation was found between peak velocity or VJ height and fat mass (r = -0.65 and -0.64, respectively; p < 0.01). These results suggest that VJ on a force plate is a reliable and valid test for assessing muscle strength and power in severely obese subjects. Vertical jump testing is easy to implement, which can facilitate its use in both research and clinical testing in this setting (ClinicalTrials.govID: NCT03325764).

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present authors aimed (a) to objectively quantify spontaneous physical activity (PA) in adult patients with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) and (b) to evaluate the transferability of a home-based exercise training programme in these patients. METHOD Physical activity was compared between 10 adult women with PWS (PWS group) and 20 adult women with non-syndromic obesity (CON group, for cross-sectional comparison). In the PWS group, PA, body composition, walking capacity, quality of life and eating behaviour were then compared before and after a 16-week supervised exercise programme. RESULTS The PWS group displayed lower PA and higher sedentary time compared to the CON group. Median attendance to exercise sessions reached 100% (Q1-Q3: 97%-100%) sessions. Moderate-to-vigorous PA and walking capacity increased after the programme without significant effect on body composition. CONCLUSION Supervised home-based exercise sessions are an effective strategy to improve PA in women with PWS who are less active than women matched for adiposity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Physical activity and dietary regimens to optimize health outcomes after bariatric surgery are not well known. This study aimed to determine whether resistance training with dietary protein supplementation is effective in maintaining body composition and physical fitness after obesity surgery. METHODS Seventy-six women with obesity undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass were randomly assigned at the time of surgery to receive either usual care (controls [CON], n = 22), usual care and additional (whey) protein intake (PRO, n = 31), or usual care, additional protein intake, and supervised strength training for 18 weeks (PRO+EX, n = 23). The primary outcome was pre- to 6-month postsurgery change in lean body mass (by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry). Secondary outcomes included changes in muscle strength (by one-repetition maximum testing). RESULTS Loss over time in lean body mass did not differ between groups (CON: mean,-8.8 kg; 95% CI: -10.1 to -7.5 kg; PRO: mean, -8.2 kg; 95% CI: -9.3 to -7.1 kg; PRO+EX: mean, -7.7 kg; 95% CI: -9.0 to -6.5 kg; P = 0.899). The increase in relative lower-limb muscle strength was higher in the PRO+EX group (+0.6 [0.3 to 0.8]) versus +0.1 (-0.1 to 0.4) and +0.2 (0.0 to 0.4) kg/kg body mass in CON and PRO groups, respectively (P = 0.021). CONCLUSIONS Loss in muscle strength observed after bariatric surgery can be overcome by resistance training with additional protein intake.

Abstract
We aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled trials assessing exercise training programs in patients with obesity undergoing bariatric surgery. We systematically searched exercise training studies performed after bariatric surgery published up to June 2017. Studies reporting changes in body composition, physical fitness, functional capacity, objectively measured physical activity, quality of life or relevant health outcomes were included. The review protocol is available from PROSPERO (CRD42017069380). Meta-analyses were conducted using random-effects models when data were available from at least five articles. Twenty articles were included, describing 16 exercise training programs, of which 15 were included in the meta-analysis. Overall, exercise training was associated with higher weight loss (mean difference: -2.4 kg, 95% CI: -4.2; -0.6, I2 = 49%, n = 12), higher fat mass loss (-2.7 kg, 95% CI: -4.5; -1.0, I2 = 50%, n = 8) and improved VO2 max and functional walking (standardized mean difference: 0.86, 95% CI: 0.29; 1.44, I2 = 57%, n = 6; 1.45, 95% CI: 0.32; 2.58, I2 = 89%, n = 6, respectively). Exercise training was not associated with lean body mass changes. In conclusion, exercise training programs performed after bariatric surgery were found effective to optimize weight loss and fat mass loss and to improve physical fitness, although no additional effect on lean body mass loss was found.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep is a modifiable lifestyle factor that can be a target for efficient intervention studies to improve the quality of life and decrease the risk or burden of some chronic conditions. Knowing the profiles of individuals with poor sleep patterns is therefore a prerequisite. Wearable devices have recently opened new areas in medical research as potential efficient tools to measure lifestyle factors such as sleep quantity and quality. OBJECTIVES The goal of our research is to identify the determinants of poor sleep based on data from a large population of users of connected devices. METHODS We analyzed data from 15,839 individuals (13,658 males and 2181 females) considered highly connected customers having purchased and used at least 3 connected devices from the consumer electronics company Withings (now Nokia). Total and deep sleep durations as well as the ratio of deep/total sleep as a proxy of sleep quality were analyzed in association with available data on age, sex, weight, heart rate, steps, and diastolic and systolic blood pressures. RESULTS With respect to the deep/total sleep duration ratio used as a proxy of sleep quality, we have observed that those at risk of having a poor ratio (≤0.40) were more frequently males (odds ratio [OR]female vs male=0.45, 95% CI 0.38-0.54), younger individuals (OR>60 years vs 18-30 years=0.47, 95% CI 0.35-0.63), and those with elevated heart rate (OR>78 bpm vs ≤61 bpm=1.18, 95% CI 1.04-1.34) and high systolic blood pressure (OR>133 mm Hg vs ≤116 mm Hg=1.22, 95% CI 1.04-1.43). A direct association with weight was observed for total sleep duration exclusively. CONCLUSIONS Wearables can provide useful information to target individuals at risk of poor sleep. Future alert or mobile phone notification systems based on poor sleep determinants measured with wearables could be tested in intervention studies to evaluate the benefits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of noncommunicable diseases, including those such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, so-called cardiometabolic diseases, is high and is increasing worldwide. Strong evidence supports the role of physical activity in management of these diseases. There is general consensus that mHealth technology, including electronic activity monitors, can potentially increase physical activity in patients, but their use in clinical settings remains limited. Practitioners' requirements when prescribing electronic activity monitors have been poorly described. OBJECTIVE The aims of this qualitative study were (1) to explore how specialist physicians prescribe electronic activity monitors to patients presenting with cardiometabolic conditions, and (2) to better understand their motivation for and barriers to prescribing such monitors. METHODS We conducted qualitative semistructured interviews in March to May 2016 with 11 senior physicians from a public university hospital in France with expertise in management of cardiometabolic diseases (type 1 and type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia). Interviews lasted 45 to 60 minutes and were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using directed content analysis. We report our findings following the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) checklist. RESULTS Most physicians we interviewed had never prescribed electronic activity monitors, whereas they frequently prescribed blood glucose or blood pressure self-monitoring devices. Reasons for nonprescription included lack of interest in the data collected, lack of evidence for data accuracy, concern about work overload possibly resulting from automatic data transfer, and risk of patients becoming addicted to data. Physicians expected future marketing of easy-to-use monitors that will accurately measure physical activity duration and intensity and provide understandable motivating feedback. CONCLUSIONS Features of electronic activity monitors, although popular among the general public, do not meet the needs of physicians. In-depth understanding of physicians' expectations is a first step toward designing technologies that can be widely used in clinical settings and facilitate physical activity prescription. Physicians should have a role, along with key health care stakeholders-patients, researchers, information technology firms, the public, and private payers-in developing the most effective methods for integrating activity monitors into patient care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stair climbing helps to accumulate short bouts of physical activity throughout the day as a strategy for attaining recommended physical activity levels. There exists a need for effective long-term stair-climbing interventions that can be transferred to various worksite settings. The aims of this study were: 1) to evaluate short- and long-term effectiveness of a worksite stair-climbing intervention using an objective measurement of stair climbing and a controlled design; and 2) to perform a process evaluation of the intervention. METHODS We performed a controlled before-and-after study. The study was conducted in two corporate buildings of the same company located in Paris (France), between September, 2013 and September, 2014. The status of either "intervention site" or "control site" was assigned by the investigators. Participants were on-site employees (intervention site: n = 783; control site: n = 545 at baseline). Two one-month intervention phases using signs (intervention phase 1) and enhancement of stairwell aesthetics (intervention phase 2) were performed. The main outcome was the change in stair climbing, measured with automatic counters and expressed in absolute counts/day/100 employees and percent change compared to baseline. Qualitative outcomes were used to describe the intervention process. RESULTS Stair climbing significantly increased at the intervention site (+18.7%) but decreased at the control site (-13.3%) during the second intervention phase (difference between sites: +4.6 counts/day/100 employees, p < 0.001). After the intervention and over the long term, stair climbing returned to baseline levels at the intervention site, but a significant difference between sites was found (intervention site vs. control site: +2.9 counts/day/100 employees, p < 0.05). Some important facets of the intervention were implemented as intended but other aspects had to be adapted. The main difficulty reported by the company's staff members lay in matching the internal communications rules with critical intervention criteria. The program was maintained at the setting level after the end of the study. CONCLUSIONS This study shows a successful stair-climbing intervention at the worksite. The main barriers to adoption and implementation were related to location and visibility of posters. Process evaluation was useful in identifying these barriers throughout the study, and in finding appropriate solutions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We performed a literature review with the main aims to propose an updated overview of the effectiveness of stair-use interventions and to determine the most effective type of intervention. METHODS We systematically searched stair-use interventions performed in worksites or public settings, published up to mid 2013. We used a harvest plot approach to visualize the findings in addition to a quantitative synthesis. We also assessed external validity using the Reach, Efficacy, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance (RE-AIM) framework. RESULTS Of 8571 articles identified, 50 were included. In worksites (25 studies) and public settings (35 studies), an increase in stair climbing was found during the intervention period in 64% and 76% of studies, respectively. Combining motivational and directional signs in worksites or conducting a second intervention phase in public settings increased stair climbing in 83% and 86% of studies, respectively. Elements of external validity were overall largely under-reported. CONCLUSION There is evidence that stair-use interventions are effective to increase stair climbing in public settings, but evidence of such effect is limited in worksites. Issues regarding the best sequencing of interventions or the potential importance of environmental interventions should be addressed in future studies. Process evaluation should be an integral part of interventions.
