Abstract
More recently, attention has turned to the putative role of gut microbiome (GMB) in pathogenesis, symptomatology, treatment response and/or resistance in schizophrenia (SCZ). It is foreseeable that fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from SCZ patients (SCZ-FMT) to germ-free mice could represent a suitable experimental framework for a better understanding of the relationship between GMB and SCZ. Thus, we set out to identify literature (i) characterizing the GMB in animal models of SCZ, and (ii) employing SCZ-FMT into rodents to model SCZ in relation to behavioral and molecular phenotypes. Five studies examining animal models of SCZ suggest distinct GMB composition compared to respective control groups, which was correlated with SCZ-like behavioral phenotypes. Four additional studies investigated SCZ-FMT into rodents in relation to behavioral phenotypes, including spontaneous hyperlocomotion, social deficits, exaggerated startle response, and cognitive impairments, resembling those observed in SCZ patients. Mice receiving SCZ-FMT showed altered neurochemical and metabolic pathways in the brain. Animal models of SCZ have shown altered GMB composition, whereas reported behavioral and neurochemical alterations following FMT from patients into rodents suggest early face and construct validity for SCZ-FMT animal models. However, the predictive validity of these models remains to be validated.

Abstract
Test anxiety (TA) is a common emotion among students during examinations. Test-induced stress can remarkably impact students' emotions and limit their performance. Mental stress is a crucial factor that could significantly alter gut microbial composition, but rare reports focus on the correlation between TA and oral microbial composition. This study aims to investigate the impact of TA on students' oral microbiota composition. This study targeted medical students who usually face heavier workloads than average undergraduates. 28 females and 19 males aged 18-30 were enrolled in this study. Questionnaires and saliva samples were collected from the participants before, during, and after the end-term examination. The level of anxiety was classified as normal, mild, moderate, and severe based on the questionnaire scores. In addition, 16S amplicon sequencing was used to analyse the composition of oral microbes. More than half of the students faced different levels of TA before and after the examination. Over three-quarters of students showed anxiety during the examination, and a quarter suffered severe TA. The 16S sequencing data showed that TA significantly altered the oral microbial composition between students with and without TA in all three survey periods. Moreover, during the examination, the genera Rothia and Streptococcus, the oral-beneficial bacteria, markedly decreased in students with TA. On the other hand, the potential pathogenic genera, such as Prevotella, Fusobacterium, and Haemophilus, significantly increased in the students with TA. And the TA effect on oral microbes displayed a gender difference among students. A high ratio of TA existed in the students during their examination period, and TA could significantly alter the oral microbial composition, decrease beneficial microbes, and promote potential pathogenic oral microbes.

Abstract
Schizophrenia is a disease with a complex etiology that significantly impairs the functioning of patients. In recent years, there has been increasing focus on the importance of the gut microbiota in the context of the gut-brain axis. In our study, we analyzed data on the gut-brain axis in relation to schizophrenia, as well as the impacts of eating habits, the use of various supplements, and diets on schizophrenia. Additionally, the study investigated the impact of antipsychotics on the development of metabolic disorders, such as diabetes, dyslipidemia, and obesity. There may be significant clinical benefits to be gained from therapies supported by supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, and probiotics. The results suggest the need for a holistic approach to the treatment of schizophrenia, incorporating both drug therapy and dietary interventions.

Abstract
The gut‑microbiota‑brain axis is a complex bidirectional communication system linking the gastrointestinal tract to the brain. Changes in the balance, composition and diversity of the gut‑microbiota (gut dysbiosis) have been found to be associated with the development of psychosis. Early‑life stress, along with various stressors encountered in different developmental phases, have been shown to be associated with the abnormal composition of the gut microbiota, leading to irregular immunological and neuroendocrine functions, which are potentially responsible for the occurrence of first‑episode psychosis (FEP). The aim of the present narrative review was to summarize the significant differences of the altered microbiome composition in patients suffering from FEP vs. healthy controls, and to discuss its effects on the occurrence and intensity of symptoms in FEP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gut dysbiosis has been established as a characteristic of schizophrenia (SCH). However, the signatures regarding SCH patients with prominent negative symptoms (SCH-N) in young adults have been poorly elucidated. METHODS Stool samples were obtained from 30 young adults with SCH-N, 32 SCH patients with prominent positive symptoms (SCH-P) along with 36 healthy controls (HCs). Microbial diversity and composition were analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Meanwhile, psychiatric symptoms were assessed by the positive and negative syndrome scale (PANSS). RESULTS There is a significant difference in β-diversity but not α-diversity indexes among the three groups. Moreover, we found a higher abundance of Fusobacteria and Proteobacteria phyla and a lower abundance of Firmicutes phyla in SCH-N when compared with HC. Besides, we identified a diagnostic potential panel comprising six genera (Coprococcus, Monoglobus, Prevotellaceae_NK3B31_group, Escherichia-Shigella, Dorea, and Butyricicoccus) that can distinguish SCH-N from HC (area under the curve = 0.939). However, the difference in microbial composition between the SCH-N and SCH-P is much less than that between SCH-N and the HC, and SCH-N and SCH-P cannot be effectively distinguished by gut microbiota. CONCLUSION The composition of gut microbiota was changed in the patients with SCH-N, which may help in further understanding of pathogenesis in young adults with SCH-N.

Abstract
Gut microbiota has complex immune functions, related to different pathologies, including multiple sclerosis (MS).This study evaluated the influence of treatments on gut microbiota in people with MS (PwMS). The research comprised 60 participants, including 39 PwMS and 21 healthy controls (HC). Among the PwMS, 20 were prescribed a disease-modifying therapy (DMT), either interferon beta1a or teriflunomide, while 19 received a combination of classical DMT and an immunoglobulin Y (IgY) supplement. For each participant, two sets of gut samples were collected: one at the study's outset and another after two months. Alpha and beta diversity analyses revealed no significant differences between groups. In comparison to the HC, the MS group exhibited an increase in Prevotella stercorea and a decrease in Faecalibacterium prausnitzii. Following treatment, individuals with MS showed enrichment in Lachnospiraceae and Streptococcus. The second sample, compared to the first one, demonstrated an increase in Bifidobacterium angulatum and a decrease in Oscillospira for individuals with MS. Gut microbiota diversity in PwMS is not significantly different to HC.However, specific taxonomic changes indicate the presence of a dysbiosis state. The use of DMTs and immunoglobulin Y supplements may contribute to alterations in microbial composition, potentially leading to the restoration of a healthier microbiome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The gut microbiome has been implicated in the pathogenesis of mental disorders where the gut-brain axis acts as a bidirectional communication network. METHODS Herein, we investigated the compositional and functional differences of gut microbiome between patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) (n = 26) and healthy control participants (n = 22) using whole-genome shotgun sequencing. In addition, we assessed the oral microbiome in patients with FEP (n = 13) and listed their taxonomic diversity. RESULTS Our findings suggest that there is a dysbiosis of gut microbiota in patients with FEP. Relative abundance of Bifidobacterium adolescentis, Prevotella copri, and Turicibacter sanguinis was markedly increased (linear discriminant analysis scores [log10] > 1, and Mann-Whitney U test; false discovery rate-adjusted p values < .05) in the FEP group compared with the healthy control participants. Pathway analysis indicated that several metabolic pathways, particularly deoxyribonucleotide biosynthesis, branched-chain amino acid biosynthesis, tricarboxylic acid cycle, and fatty acid elongation and biosynthesis, were dysregulated in the FEP group compared with the healthy control group. In addition, this preliminary study was able to identify specific gut microbes (at baseline) that were predictive of weight gain in the FEP group at a 1-year follow-up. Bacteroides dorei, Bifidobacterium adolescentis, Turicibacter sanguinis, Roseburia spp., and Ruminococcus lactaris were positively associated (eXtreme gradient boosting, XGBoost regression model, Shapley additive explanations, R2 = 0.82) with weight gain. CONCLUSIONS Our findings may suggest the involvement of gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of psychosis. The benefit of modulation of the gut microbiome in the treatment of psychotic disorders should be explored further.

Abstract
Otitis media (OM) is one of the most globally pervasive pediatric conditions. Translocation of nasopharynx-resident opportunistic pathogens like nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) assimilates into polymicrobial middle ear biofilms, which promote OM pathogenesis and substantially diminish antibiotic efficacy. Oral or tympanostomy tube (TT)-delivered antibiotics remain the standard of care (SOC) despite consequences including secondary infection, dysbiosis, and antimicrobial resistance. Monoclonal antibodies (mAb) against two biofilm-associated structural proteins, NTHi-specific type IV pilus PilA (anti-rsPilA) and protective tip-region epitopes of NTHi integration host factor (anti-tip-chimer), were previously shown to disrupt biofilms and restore antibiotic sensitivity in vitro. However, the additional criterion for clinical relevance includes the absence of consequential microbiome alterations. Here, nine chinchilla cohorts (n = 3/cohort) without disease were established to evaluate whether TT delivery of mAbs disrupted nasopharyngeal or fecal microbiomes relative to SOC-OM antibiotics. Cohort treatments included a 7d regimen of oral amoxicillin-clavulanate (AC) or 2d regimen of TT-delivered mAb, AC, Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TS), ofloxacin, or saline. Fecal and nasopharyngeal lavage (NPL) samples were collected before and several days post treatment (DPT) for 16S sequencing. While antibiotic-treated cohorts displayed beta-diversity shifts (PERMANOVA, P < 0.05) and reductions in alpha diversity (q < 0.20) relative to baseline, mAb antibodies failed to affect diversity, indicating maintenance of a eubiotic state. Taxonomic and longitudinal analyses showed blooms in opportunistic pathogens (ANCOM) and greater magnitudes of compositional change (P < 0.05) following broad-spectrum antibiotic but not mAb treatments. Collectively, results showed broad-spectrum antibiotics induced significant fecal and nasopharyngeal microbiome disruption regardless of delivery route. Excitingly, biofilm-targeting antibodies had little effect on fecal and nasopharyngeal microbiomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS Intestinal microbiota is intrinsically linked to human health. Evidence suggests that the composition and function of the microbiome differs in those with schizophrenia compared with controls. It is not clear how these alterations functionally impact people with schizophrenia. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to combine and evaluate data on compositional and functional alterations in microbiota in patients with psychosis or schizophrenia. STUDY DESIGN Original studies involving humans and animals were included. The electronic databases PsycINFO, EMBASE, Web of Science, PubMed/MEDLINE, and Cochrane were systematically searched and quantitative analysis performed. STUDY RESULTS Sixteen original studies met inclusion criteria (1376 participants: 748 cases and 628 controls). Ten were included in the meta-analysis. Although observed species and Chao 1 show a decrease in diversity in people with schizophrenia compared with controls (SMD = -0.14 and -0.66 respectively), that did not reach statistical significance. We did not find evidence for variations in richness or evenness of microbiota between patients and controls overall. Differences in beta diversity and consistent patterns in microbial taxa were noted across studies. We found increases in Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and Megasphaera in schizophrenia groups. Variations in brain structure, metabolic pathways, and symptom severity may be associated with compositional alterations in the microbiome. The heterogeneous design of studies complicates a similar evaluation of functional readouts. CONCLUSIONS The microbiome may play a role in the etiology and symptomatology of schizophrenia. Understanding how the implications of alterations in microbial genes for symptomatic expression and clinical outcomes may contribute to the development of microbiome targeted interventions for psychosis.

Abstract
The number of individuals experiencing mental disorders (e.g., anxiety and depression) has significantly risen in recent years. Therefore, it is essential to seek prevention and treatment strategies for mental disorders. Several gut microbiota, especially Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, are demonstrated to affect mental health through microbiota-gut-brain axis, and the gut microbiota dysbiosis can be related to mental disorders, such as anxiety, depression, and other mental disorders. On the other hand, dietary components, including probiotics (e.g., Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium), prebiotics (e.g., dietary fiber and alpha-lactalbumin), synbiotics, postbiotics (e.g., short-chain fatty acids), dairy products, spices (e.g., Zanthoxylum bungeanum, curcumin, and capsaicin), fruits, vegetables, medicinal herbs, and so on, could exert protective effects against mental disorders by enhancing beneficial gut microbiota while suppressing harmful ones. In this paper, the mental disorder-associated gut microbiota are summarized. In addition, the protective effects of dietary components on mental health through targeting the gut microbiota are discussed. This paper can be helpful to develop some dietary natural products into pharmaceuticals and functional foods to prevent and treat mental disorders.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been a global trend towards a plant-based lifestyle. In the NuEva study, dietary self-reports of 258 participants following one of four diets (Western diet (WD), flexitarians (Flex), vegetarians (VG), and vegans (VN)) were related to fecal microbiome composition. Reduced consumption of animal products (VN < VG < Flex < WD) was associated with a decreased intake of energy (p < 0.05), and an increased intake of soluble and non-soluble dietary fibers (p < 0.05). We observed the lowest average microbiome diversity in vegans and the highest in WD. Compared to WD, VG (p < 0.05) and VN (p < 0.01) differed significantly in their bacterial composition. These data were related to dietary fiber intake. Furthermore, we identified 14 diet-specific biomarkers at the genus level by using LefSe analysis. Of these, 11 showed minimum or maximum counts in WD or VN. While the VN-specific species were inversely associated with cardiovascular risk factors, a positive association was detected for the WD-specific species. Identifying biomarkers for the diets on extreme ends of the spectrum (WD and VN) and their association with cardiovascular risk factors provides a solid evidence base highlighting the potential and the need for the development of personalized recommendations dependent on dietary patterns. Even so, the mechanisms underlying these diet-specific differences in microbiome composition cannot yet be clearly assessed. The elucidation of these associations will provide the basis for personalized nutritional recommendations based on the microbiome.

Abstract
Recent findings have supported an association between deviations in gut microbiome composition and schizophrenia. However, the extent to which the gut microbiota contributes to schizophrenia remains unclear. Moreover, studies have yet to explore variations in ecological associations among bacterial types in subjects with schizophrenia, which can reveal differences in community interactions and gut stability. We examined the dataset collected by Nguyen et al. (2021) to investigate the similarities and differences in gut microbial constituents between 48 subjects with schizophrenia and 48 matched non-psychiatric comparison cases. We re-analyzed alpha- and beta-diversity differences and completed modified differential abundance analyses and confirmed the findings of Nguyen et al. (2021) that there was little variation in alpha-diversity but significant differences in beta-diversity between individuals with schizophrenia and non-psychiatric subjects. We also conducted mediation analysis, developed a machine learning (ML) model to predict schizophrenia, and completed network analysis to examine community-level interactions among bacterial taxa. Our study offers new insights, suggesting that the gut microbiome mediates the effects between schizophrenia and smoking status, BMI, anxiety score, and depression score. Our differential abundance and network analysis findings suggest that the differential abundance of Lachnospiraceae and Ruminococcaceae taxa fosters a decrease in stabilizing competitive interactions in the gut microbiome of subjects with schizophrenia. Loss of this competition may promote ecological instability and dysbiosis, altering gut-brain axis interactions in these subjects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The pathogenesis of schizophrenia is multidimensional and intensively studied. The gut-brain axis disturbances might play a significant role in the development of schizophrenia. METHODS We compared the gut microbiota of 53 individuals with schizophrenia and 58 healthy controls, using the 16S rRNA sequencing method. Individuals with schizophrenia were assessed using the following scales: the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia, the Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale and the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status. RESULTS No significant between-group differences in α-diversity measures were observed. Increased abundance of Lactobacillales (order level), Bacilli (class level) and Actinobacteriota (phylum level) were found in individuals with schizophrenia regardless of potential confounding factors, and using two independent analytical approaches (the distance-based redundancy analysis and the generalised linear model analysis). Additionally, significant correlations between various bacterial taxa (the Bacteroidia class, the Actinobacteriota phylum, the Bacteroidota phylum, the Coriobacteriales order and the Coriobacteria class) and clinical manifestation (the severity of negative symptoms, performance of language abilities, social and occupational functioning) were observed. CONCLUSIONS The present study indicates that gut microbiota alterations are present in European patients with schizophrenia. The abundance of certain bacterial taxa might be associated with the severity of negative symptoms, cognitive performance and general functioning. Nonetheless, additional studies are needed before the translation of our results into clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the rapid progress of high-throughput sequencing technology, characterization of schizophrenia (SZ) with underlying probing of the gut microbiome can explore pathogenic mechanisms, estimate disease risk, and allow customization of therapeutic and prophylactic modalities. In this study, we compared the differences in gut microbial diversity and composition between 50 SZ subjects and 50 healthy matched subjects in Zhejiang, China via targeted next-generation sequencing (16S rRNA amplicon). RESULTS Accordingly, the alpha diversity indices (observed species index, Shannon index, and Simpson index) of the gut microbiome in the healthy control group were higher than those in the SZ group. Additionally, principal coordinate analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling of beta diversity revealed that patients with SZ clustered more tightly than healthy controls. At the phylum level, we found that the abundance of Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria in the SZ group was significantly increased. At the genus level, the relative abundances of Prevotella, Parabacteroides, and Sutterella were significantly higher, whereas the abundances of Faecalibacterium, Blautia, Lachnospira, Clostridium, Ruminococcus, and Coprococcus were lower than those in the healthy control group. Further analyses revealed that Succinivibrio, Megasphaera, and Nesterenkonia may serve as potential biomarkers for distinguishing patients with SZ from those in the control cohort. CONCLUSIONS This study profiled differences in gut microbiome diversity, taxonomic composition, and function between SZ and healthy cohorts, and the insights from this research could be used to develop targeted next-generation sequencing-based diagnoses for SZ.

Abstract
The connection between gut microbiota and schizophrenia has become a fertile area of research. The relationship is bidirectional and quite complex, but is likely to lead to practical clinical applications. For example, commensal microbiota have been shown to produce inflammatory metabolites that can cross the blood–brain barrier—a possible neurobiological precursor of psychosis. Antipsychotics that treat these individuals have been shown to alter gut microbiota. On the other hand, life style in schizophrenia, such as diet and decreased exercise, can be disruptive to the normal microbiome diversity. In the present paper, we conduct a review of PubMed literature focusing on the relationship of gut microbiota with clinical symptoms of schizophrenia, which, to our knowledge, has not yet been reviewed. Numerous clinical characteristics were identified correlating to gut microbial changes, such as violence, negative symptoms, treatment resistance, and global functioning. The most consistently demonstrated correlations to gut microbial changes across studies were for the overall symptom severity and negative symptom severity. Although numerous studies found changes in these domains, there is much variability between the bacteria that change in abundance between studies, likely due to the regional and methodological differences between studies. The current literature shows promising correlations between gut microbiota profiles and several clinical features of schizophrenia, but initial studies require replication.

Abstract
BackgroundSchizophrenia is a serious mental illness affecting approximately 20 million individuals globally. Both genetic and environmental factors contribute to the illness. If left undiagnosed and untreated, schizophrenia results in impaired social function, repeated hospital admissions, reduced quality of life and decreased life expectancy. Clinical diagnosis largely relies on subjective evidence, including self-reported experiences, and reported behavioural abnormalities followed by psychiatric evaluation. In addition, psychoses may occur along with other conditions, and the symptoms are often episodic and transient, posing a significant challenge to the precision of diagnosis. Therefore, objective, specific tests using biomarkers are urgently needed for differential diagnosis of schizophrenia in clinical practice.AimsWe aimed to provide evidence-based and consensus-based recommendations, with a summary of laboratory measurements that could potentially be used as biomarkers for schizophrenia, and to discuss directions for future research.MethodsWe searched publications within the last 10 years with the following keywords: ‘schizophrenia’, ‘gene’, ‘inflammation’, ‘neurotransmitter’, ‘protein marker’, ‘gut microbiota’, ‘pharmacogenomics’ and ‘biomarker’. A draft of the consensus was discussed and agreed on by all authors at a round table session.ResultsWe summarised the characteristics of candidate diagnostic markers for schizophrenia, including genetic, inflammatory, neurotransmitter, peripheral protein, pharmacogenomic and gut microbiota markers. We also proposed a novel laboratory process for diagnosing schizophrenia in clinical practice based on the evidence summarised in this paper.ConclusionsFurther efforts are needed to identify schizophrenia-specific genetic and epigenetic markers for precise diagnosis, differential diagnosis and ethnicity-specific markers for the Chinese population. The development of novel laboratory techniques is making it possible to use these biomarkers clinically to diagnose disease.

Abstract
The emerging understanding of gut microbiota as 'metabolic machinery' influencing many aspects of physiology has gained substantial attention in the field of psychiatry. This is largely due to the many overlapping pathophysiological mechanisms associated with both the potential functionality of the gut microbiota and the biological mechanisms thought to be underpinning mental disorders. In this systematic review, we synthesised the current literature investigating differences in gut microbiota composition in people with the major psychiatric disorders, major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia (SZ), compared to 'healthy' controls. We also explored gut microbiota composition across disorders in an attempt to elucidate potential commonalities in the microbial signatures associated with these mental disorders. Following the PRISMA guidelines, databases were searched from inception through to December 2021. We identified 44 studies (including a total of 2510 psychiatric cases and 2407 controls) that met inclusion criteria, of which 24 investigated gut microbiota composition in MDD, seven investigated gut microbiota composition in BD, and 15 investigated gut microbiota composition in SZ. Our syntheses provide no strong evidence for a difference in the number or distribution (α-diversity) of bacteria in those with a mental disorder compared to controls. However, studies were relatively consistent in reporting differences in overall community composition (β-diversity) in people with and without mental disorders. Our syntheses also identified specific bacterial taxa commonly associated with mental disorders, including lower levels of bacterial genera that produce short-chain fatty acids (e.g. butyrate), higher levels of lactic acid-producing bacteria, and higher levels of bacteria associated with glutamate and GABA metabolism. We also observed substantial heterogeneity across studies with regards to methodologies and reporting. Further prospective and experimental research using new tools and robust guidelines hold promise for improving our understanding of the role of the gut microbiota in mental and brain health and the development of interventions based on modification of gut microbiota.
