Abstract
The prevention and control of human immunodeficiency virus and sexually transmitted infections (HIV/STI) face challenges worldwide, especially in China. Prediction tools, which analyze medical data and information to make future predictions, were once mainly used in HIV/STI research to help make diagnostic or prognostic decisions, has have now extended to the public as a freely accessible tool. This article provides an overview of the different roles of prediction tools in preventing and controlling HIV/STI from the perspectives of individuals, healthcare providers, and policymakers. For individuals, prediction tools serve as a risk assessment solution that assess their risk and consciously improve risk reception or change risky behaviors. For researchers, prediction tools are powerful for assisting in identifying risk factors and predicting patients' infection risk, which can inform timely and accurate intervention planning in the future. In order to achieve the best performance, current research increasingly underscores the necessity of considering multiple levels of information, such as socio-behavioral data, in developing a robust prediction tool. In addition, it is also crucial to conduct trials in clinical settings to validate the effectiveness of prediction tools. Many studies only use theoretical parameters such as model accuracy to estimate its predictive. If these improvements are made, the application of prediction tools could be a potentially inspiring solution in the prevention and control of HIV/STI, and an opportunity for achieving the World Health Organization's agenda to end the HIV/STI epidemic by 2030.

Abstract
The healthy cervicovaginal microbiota is dominated by various Lactobacillus species, which support a condition of eubiosis. Among their many functions, vaginal lactobacilli contribute to the maintenance of an acidic pH, produce antimicrobial compounds, and modulate the host immune response to protect against vaginal bacterial and fungal infections. Increasing evidence suggests that these beneficial bacteria may also confer protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) caused by viruses such as human papillomavirus (HPV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and herpes simplex virus (HSV). Viral STIs pose a substantial public health burden globally, causing a range of infectious diseases with potentially severe consequences. Understanding the molecular mechanisms by which lactobacilli exert their protective effects against viral STIs is paramount for the development of novel preventive and therapeutic strategies. This review aims to provide more recent insights into the intricate interactions between lactobacilli and viral STIs, exploring their impact on the vaginal microenvironment, host immune response, viral infectivity and pathogenesis, and highlighting their potential implications for public health interventions and clinical management strategies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence and factors associated with the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) in transgender women and travestis in five Brazilian capitals. METHODS Data were obtained from a cross-sectional study conducted between 2019 and 2021, with participants recruited through Respondent Driven Sampling in São Paulo, Campo Grande, Manaus, Porto Alegre and Salvador. Detection of CT and NG was analyzed at three collection sites (anorectal, oropharyngeal and urethral). Mixed logistic regression models were employed to identify associated factors. RESULTS A total of 1,297 recruited participants provided biological material to detect these infections. The prevalences of CT, NG and coinfection were 11.5%, 13.3% and 3.6%, respectively. Independent associations with CT infections included past (OR=1.73; 95%CI 1.02-2.95), current (OR=2.13; 95%CI 1.23-3.69), and part-time sex work (OR=2.75; 95%CI 1.60-4.75), as well as lifetime injectable drug use (OR=3.54; 95%CI 1.49-8.40). For NG, associations were observed with lifetime injectable drug use (OR=1.91; 95%CI 1.28-2.84) and sexual orientation, including heterosexual (OR=3.44; 95%CI 1.35-8.82), homosexual (OR=5.49; 95%CI 1.89-15.97), and bisexual (OR=3.21; 95%CI 1.06-9.68). Coinfection was associated with use of illicit drugs in the last 12 months (OR=2.34, 95%CI 1.10-5.00), and younger age was associated with all investigated outcomes. CONCLUSION Estimated prevalences of CT, NG and co-infection were higher among transgender women and travestis compared to the general population, particularly among younger, individuals engaged in sex work and illicit drug use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a global public health concern and sub-Saharan Africa, has limited data on STIs in the men who have sex with men (MSM) population. Syndromic management has controversies for treating asymptomatic STIs (ASTIs). AIM The aim of this study was to describe the risk factors for STIs among MSM. SETTING This study was conducted in Tshwane North, Gauteng Province in South Africa. METHODS A cross-sectional quantitative design was employed using structured questionnaires, rapid plasma reagent test, from December 2021 to May 2022. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS A total of 200 MSM with the mean age of 27.6, standard deviations: 6.8 participated, and STIs prevalence was 66%, with 37% concurrent infections. Ureaplasma urealyticum was (24%), Mycoplasma hominis (23%), Chlamydia trachomatis (20%), Treponema pallidum (20%) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (9%). The risk factors for acquisition of STI include having a new partner in the last month (OR = 1.68; CI: 0.98-3.13). CONCLUSION The prevalence of ASTIs is high. Serial and multiple sexual partners are the risk factors.Contribution: This study contributes to the body of knowledge of the burden of STIs among high-risk population.

Abstract
The global incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remains high, with the World Health Organization (WHO) estimating that over 1 million people acquire STIs daily. STIs can lead to infertility, pregnancy complications, and cancers. Co-infections with multiple pathogens are prevalent among individuals with an STI and can lead to heightened infectivity and more severe clinical manifestations. Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) is the most reported bacterial STI worldwide in both men and women, and several studies have demonstrated co-infection of CT with viral and other bacterial STIs. CT is a gram-negative bacterium with a unique biphasic developmental cycle including infectious extracellular elementary bodies (EBs) and metabolically active intracellular reticulate bodies (RBs). The intracellular form of this organism, RBs, has evolved mechanisms to persist for long periods within host epithelial cells in a viable but non-cultivable state. The co-infections of CT with the most frequently reported sexually transmitted viruses: human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), human papillomavirus (HPV), and herpes simplex virus (HSV) have been investigated through in vitro and in vivo studies. These research studies have made significant strides in unraveling the intricate interactions between CT, these viral STIs, and their eukaryotic host. In this review, we present an overview of the epidemiology of these co-infections, while specifically delineating the underlying mechanisms by which CT influences the transmission and infection dynamics of HIV and HSV. Furthermore, we explore the intricate relationship between CT and HPV infection, with a particular emphasis on the heightened risk of cervical cancer. By consolidating the current body of knowledge, we provide valuable insights into the complex dynamics and implications of co-infection involving CT and sexually transmitted viruses.

Abstract
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) constitute one of the leading causes of disease burden worldwide, leading to considerable morbidity, mortality, health expenditures, and stigma. Of note are the most common bacterial STIs, chlamydial and gonococcal infections, whose etiological agents are Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), respectively. Despite being usually asymptomatic, in some cases these infections can be associated with long-term severe complications, such as pelvic inflammatory disease, chronic pelvic pain, infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and increased risk of other STIs acquisition. As the symptoms, when present, are usually similar in both infections, and in most of the cases these infections co-occur, the dual-test strategy, searching for both pathogens, should be preferred. In line with this, herein we focus on the main aspects of CT and NG infections, the clinical symptoms as well as the appropriate state-of-the-art diagnostic tests and treatment. Cost-effective strategies for controlling CT and NG infections worldwide are addressed. The treatment for both infections is based on antibiotics. However, the continuing global rise in the incidence of these infections, concomitantly with the increased risk of antibiotics resistance, leads to difficulties in their control, particularly in the case of NG infections. We also discuss the potential mechanism of tumorigenesis related to CT infections. The molecular bases of CT and NG infections are addressed, as they should provide clues for control or eradication, through the development of new drugs and/or effective vaccines against these pathogens.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review summarizes recently published research on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Asia, covering four main areas: prevalence and consequences of STIs/STDs, factors associated with STI risk, strategies and measures of STI prevention, challenges in the prevention of SITs. RECENT FINDINGS Studies show that STIs among Asian MSM are still prevalent, with the prevalence of STIs varying slightly from country to country. In addition to the number of sexual partners, frequency of condom use, high-risk sexual behaviors, the influence of Confucianism, law, and COVID-19 are also related to STI risk. Social stigma, weak health systems, lack of funding and policy support are the current challenges for STIs prevention. SUMMARY In the future, new media technologies are encouraged to be used to enhance education and reduce stigma and discrimination against MSM and STIs. Expanding STI screening, strengthening STI knowledge propaganda and education among MSM population, and providing necessary counseling and medical services are main strategies in STI prevention. It is also important to strengthen STI awareness and policy support at the national level.

Abstract
Chlamydia trachomatis and human papilloma virus (HPV) are the two most common sexually transmitted infections among women. HPV infection can increase the risk of cervical cancer and infertility while C. trachomatis induces pelvic inflammatory disease. Here, we elucidate the molecular conundrum of the co-infection of HPV and C. trachomatis infection and their outcome with respect to cervical cancer. HPV infection was mimicked by overexpression of HPV 16 E6-E7 or using human cervical cell lines SiHa and C33a (with and without HPV 16 respectively). HPV transfected co-infection increased cell proliferation and resistance to H202 and TNFα-induced cell death compared to individual infections. These changes are brought by alteration in the cell cycle proteins (CDK2, CDK6 and Bcl2) and thus increasing the stemness of the epithelial cells as observed by increased colony forming units and CD133 expression. The co-infection also induces change in the mRNA levels of cells which are involved in mesenchymal phenotype. C. trachomatis in presence of E6-E7 overexpression caused cervical epithelial neoplasm in mice with increased Ki67 expression and decreased P53 levels. Stem cell marker, CD133 expression also increased in the cervical tissues of both infected and co-infected group of mice. The cells obtained from the cervix were able to grow continuously in ex vivo cultures. All these results indicate the co-existence of the C. trachomatis and HPV 16 might increase the risk of cervical cancer.

Abstract
Since the beginning of the monkeypox (mpox) virus outbreak in May 2022, there has been an increase in the number of cases worldwide in the setting of sexual transmission. We have tested by real-time PCR 187 mpox patients, of which 157 patients were screened for sexually transmitted infections (STI) in 245 samples. Thirty-six pathogens were detected in 30 patients: herpes simplex virus (HSV-I/II, 12/36, 33.3%), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG, 9/36, 25%), Chlamydia trachomatis (CT, 5/36, 13.8%), Chlamydia trachomatis-lymphogranuloma venereum (CT-LGV, 3/36, 8.3%), Treponema pallidum (TP, 4/36, 11.1%) and Mycoplasma genitalium (MG, 3/36, 8.3%). Screening of STI is recommended in mpox patients for the differential diagnosis of the main infections of sexual tract especially in patients with rectal involvement.

Abstract
Background The prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remains high worldwide. Despite the worldwide increase in the incidence of STIs every year, there are few reports on the frequency of STIs with different pathogens according to age and gender. Accordingly, a study was conducted to determine trends in co-infection with STIs by age and gender in Cheonan, South Korea from 2017 to 2021. Objectives To identify trends by age or sex in co-infection of STIs in this region. Design A retrospective study was conducted on clinical samples examined at Dankook University Hospital from January 2017 to November 2021. A total of 3297 specimens were collected from patients visiting Dankook University Hospital (Cheonan, Korea), and statistical analysis was performed on patients ranging in age from 1 day to 93 years. Methods Multiplex polymerase chain reaction, the most efficient method to diagnose a bacterial infection, was performed using an MJ Research PTC-200 Thermal Cycler (Marshall Scientific, Richmond, VA, USA) and a Seeplex STD Detection Kit (Seegene, Seoul, Republic of Korea). The co-infection rate with STI pathogens was analyzed according to age and sex. Results Of the 3297 clinical samples, 1017 (30.9%) tested positive for sexually transmitted pathogens, ranging from one to six co-infections. Analysis of the co-infection rate by age revealed that the average age gradually decreased as the total number of co-infection pathogens increased. The co-infection percentage and age distribution of STIs differed according to sex. Co-infection was more prevalent in female patients. Furthermore, co-infection in male patients occurred frequently in the 30-39-year-old group, while those in female patients occurred in the 20-29- and 30-39-year-old groups. Conclusion Our statistical analysis showed that STI co-infections were more common among younger than older people. Therefore, it helps in recognizing STIs at a young age and provides possible indicator data to prevent STIs at a young age. In addition, further research is needed on co-infection in other regions.
