Identification of Active Species in Photodegradation of Aqueous Imidacloprid over g-C3N4/TiO2 Nanocomposites

Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Imidacloprid Based on Iron Metal-Organic Frameworks of Mesoporous NH2-MIL-88b/Graphite Carbon Nitride Nanocomposites by Visible Light Driven in Aqueous Media

Pesticides that protect crops from insects and other pests are some of the main causes of water pollution. Imidacloprid (IMC) is the most widely used insecticide in the world and should be removed from the environment. This work aims to prepare mesoporous nanocomposites to increase the photodegradation efficiency of IMC. To improve the surface properties and enhance the photocatalytic activity, mesoporous nanocomposites with different weight ratios of graphite carbon nitride (CN = 125, 250, and 500 mg) were prepared by the solvothermal method. Mesoporous NH2-MIL-88b(Fe)/graphite carbon nitride (CN = 250 mg, NH2-MCN-2) nanocomposites showed the best photocatalytic performance. To save the time and cost of the experiments, central composite design (CCD) and response surface methodology (RSM) were used and the results were obtained as the initial concentration of IMC (20 mg L-1), amount of photocatalyst (0.76 g L-1), pH = 5, and degradation time ∼46 min. The maximum photocatalytic degradation efficiency estimated by the model was obtained at 96.31%, which is very close to the actual value of 95.47%. The mesoporous NH2-MCN-2 nanocomposite showed excellent stability and suitable reusability with a maximum degradation of 84.5% after five cycles. Results obtained from kinetic studies indicated a rate constant value of 0.08 min-1, and isotherm models showed that equilibrium data are more consistent with the Langmuir model in photocatalytic degradation. Electrochemical experiments showed significant improvement in the electron transfer rate and photocatalytic activity of the mesoporous NH2-MCN-2 nanocomposite. Different trapping agents were used to investigate the effective active species in IMC photodegradation, and it was determined that the hole (h+) and OH radical (•OH) play the main role. The possible mechanism for IMC photocatalytic degradation was suggested by Mott-Schottky (M-S) electrochemical impedance.

Nuclear Quantum Effects Accelerate Charge Separation and Recombination in g-C3N4/TiO2 Heterojunctions

We combined ring-polymer molecular dynamics (MD) and ab initio MD with nonadiabatic MD to study the effects of nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) on interlayer electron transfer and electron-hole recombination at the g-C3N4/TiO2 interface. Our simulations indicate that NQEs significantly affect electron transfer and electron-hole recombination dynamics, accelerating both processes. NQEs deform the g-C3N4 layer and expedite the movement of carbon and nitrogen atoms, thus, enhancing charge delocalization and interlayer coupling. This improved overlap between electronic state wave functions enhances nonadiabatic couplings, facilitating electron transfer and recombination. In addition to the enhanced nonadiabatic couplings accelerating electron transfer, the presence of NQEs narrows the energy gap and delays decoherence by mitigating overall fluctuations, because of restricted TiO2 movements overwhelming enhanced g-C3N4 fluctuations, thereby making the recombination faster. This work provides valuable insights into NQEs in light-element systems and contributes to guiding the development of highly efficient photocatalysts.

Biosynthesis of JC-La2CoO4 magnetic nanoparticles explored in catalytic and SMMs properties

We have reported the synthesis of JC-La2CoO4 magnetic nanoparticles from Jatropha Curcas L. leaf extract in aqueous medium and potential application study in catalytic & Single Molecule Magnets (SMMs). Several techniques were used to investigate the structural, morphological, and elemental composition, particle size, optical properties, catalytic and magnetic properties by XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDAX, XPS, UV-visible and squid magnetic measurement. It was found that the crystallite sizes and grain sizes of JC-La2CoO4 NPs were 11.3 ± 1 and 24.1 ± 1 nm respectively and surface morphology of the nanoparticles looks spherical shape with good surface area. The band gap of JC-La2CoO4 was found to be 4.95 eV indicates good semiconductor in nature. XPS studies shows that La and Co present in + 3 and + 2 oxidation state respectively and suggest the composition formula is La2CoO4 with satisfied all the valency of metal ions. The photocatalytic efficiency of La2CoO4 shows good result against methylene blue (MB) compared to other dyes like MO, NO, RhB in presence of sunlight with rate constant 56.73 × 10-3 min-1 and completely degraded within 115 mints. The importance of JC-La2CoO4 has magnetic properties with antiferromagnetic coupling and SMMs properties with nature.

Preparation of high-crystalline and non-metal modified g-C3N4 for improving ultrasound-accelerated white-LED-light-driven photocatalytic performances

As a non-metallic organic semiconductor, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has received much attention due to its unique physicochemical properties. However, the photocatalytic activity of this semiconductor faces challenges due to factors such as low electronic conductivity and limited active sites provided on its surface. The morphology and structure of g-C3N4, including macro/micro morphology, crystal structure and electronic structure can affect its catalytic activity. Non-metallic heteroatom doping is considered as an effective method to tune the optical, electronic and other physicochemical properties of g-C3N4. Here, we synthesized non-metal-doped highly crystalline g-C3N4 by one-pot calcination method, which enhanced the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 such as mesoporous nature, reduced band gap, wide-range photousability, improved charge carrier recombination, and the electrical conductivity was improved. Hence, the use of low-power white-LED-light illumination (λ ≥ 420 nm) and ultrasound (US) irradiation synergistically engendered the Methylene Blue (MB) mineralization efficiency elevated to 100% within 120 min by following the pseudo-first-order mechanism under the following condition (i.e., pH 11, 0.75 g L-1 of O-doped g-C3N4 and S-doped g-C3N4, 20 mg L-1 MB, 0.25 ml s-1 O2, and spontaneous raising temperature). In addition, the rapid removal of MB by sonophotocatalysis was 4 times higher than that of primary photocatalysis. And radical scavenging experiments showed that the maximum distribution of active species corresponds to superoxide radical [Formula: see text]. More importantly, the sonophotocatalytic degradation ability of O-doped g-C3N4 and S-doped g-C3N4 was remarkably sustained even after the sixth consecutive run.

Alternating current properties of bulk- and nanosheet-graphitic carbon nitride compacts at elevated temperatures

The investigations of temperature-dependent electrical properties in graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) have been largely performed at/below room temperature on devices commonly fabricated by vacuum techniques, leaving the gap to further explore its behaviors at high-temperature. We reported herein the temperature dependence (400 → 35 °C) of alternating current (AC) electrical properties in bulk- and nanosheet-g-C3N4 compacts simply prepared by pelletizing the powder. The bulk sample was synthesized via the direct heating of urea, and the subsequent HNO3-assisted thermal exfoliation yielded the nanosheet counterpart. Their thermal stability was confirmed by variable-temperature X-ray diffraction, demonstrating reversible interlayer expansion/contraction upon heating/cooling with the thermal expansion coefficient of 2.2 × 10-5-3.1 × 10-5 K-1. It is found that bulk- and nanosheet-g-C3N4 were highly insulating (resistivity ρ ∼ 108 Ω cm unchanged with temperature), resembling layered van der Waals materials such as graphite fluoride but unlike electronically insulating oxides. Likewise, the dielectric permittivity ε', loss tangent tan δ, refractive index n, dielectric heating coefficient J, and attenuation coefficient α, were weakly temperature- and frequency-dependent (103-105 Hz). The experimentally determined ε' of bulk-g-C3N4 was reasonably close to the in-plane static dielectric permittivity (8 vs. 5.1) deduced from first-principles calculation, consistent with the anisotropic structure. The nanosheet-g-C3N4 exhibited a higher ε' ∼ 15 while keeping similar tan δ (∼0.09) compared to the bulk counterpart, demonstrating its potential as a highly insulating, stable dielectrics at elevated temperatures.

Photocatalytic degradation of imidacloprid using Ag2O/CuO composites

Imidacloprid is one of the most commonly used neonicotinoid pesticides that has been identified as a neurotoxin for various non-target organisms. It binds to the central nervous system of organisms, causing paralysis and eventually death. Thus, it is imperative to treat waterwaters contaminated with imidacloprid using an efficient and cost effective method. The present study presents Ag₂O/CuO composites as excellent catalysts for the photocatalytic degradation of imidacloprid. The Ag₂O/CuO composites were prepared in different compositions by adopting the co-precipitation method and used as a catalyst for the degradation of imidacloprid. The degradation process was monitored using UV-vis spectroscopy. The composition, structure, and morphologies of the composites were determined by FT-IR, XRD, TGA, and SEM analyses. The effect of different parameters i.e time, concentration of pesticide, concentration of catalyst, pH, and temperature on the degradation was studied under UV irradiation and dark conditions. The results of the study evidenced the 92.3% degradation of imidacloprid in only 180 minutes, which was 19.25 hours under natural conditions. The degradation followed first-order kinetics, with the half life of the pesticide being 3.7 hours. Thus, the Ag₂O/CuO composite was an excellent cost-effective catalyst. The non-toxic nature of the material adds further benefits to its use. The stability of the catalyst and its reusability for consecutive cycles make it more cost effective. The use of this material may help to ensure an immidacloprid free environment with minimal use of resources. Moreover, the potential of this material to degrade other environmental pollutants may also be explored.

Microwave Synthesis of Visible-Light-Activated g-C3N4/TiO2 Photocatalysts

The preparation of visible-light-driven photocatalysts has become highly appealing for environmental remediation through simple, fast and green chemical methods. The current study reports the synthesis and characterization of graphitic carbon nitride/titanium dioxide (g-C₃N₄/TiO₂) heterostructures through a fast (1 h) and simple microwave-assisted approach. Different g-C₃N₄ amounts mixed with TiO₂ (15, 30 and 45 wt. %) were investigated for the photocatalytic degradation of a recalcitrant azo dye (methyl orange (MO)) under solar simulating light. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the anatase TiO₂ phase for the pure material and all heterostructures produced. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that by increasing the amount of g-C₃N₄ in the synthesis, large TiO₂ aggregates composed of irregularly shaped particles were disintegrated and resulted in smaller ones, composing a film that covered the g-C₃N₄ nanosheets. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) analyses confirmed the existence of an effective interface between a g-C₃N₄ nanosheet and a TiO₂ nanocrystal. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) evidenced no chemical alterations to both g-C₃N₄ and TiO₂ at the heterostructure. The visible-light absorption shift was indicated by the red shift in the absorption onset through the ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) absorption spectra. The 30 wt. % of g-C₃N₄/TiO₂ heterostructure showed the best photocatalytic performance, with a MO dye degradation of 85% in 4 h, corresponding to an enhanced efficiency of almost 2 and 10 times greater than that of pure TiO₂ and g-C₃N₄ nanosheets, respectively. Superoxide radical species were found to be the most active radical species in the MO photodegradation process. The creation of a type-II heterostructure is highly suggested due to the negligible participation of hydroxyl radical species in the photodegradation process. The superior photocatalytic activity was attributed to the synergy of g-C₃N₄ and TiO₂ materials.

TiO2/graphitic carbon nitride nanosheet composite with enhanced sensitivity to atmospheric water

Understanding the fundamentals of transport properties in two-dimensional (2D) materials is essential for their applications in devices, sensors, and so on. Herein, we report the impedance spectroscopic study of carbon nitride nanosheets (CNNS) and the composite with anatase (TiO₂/CNNS, 20 atom% Ti), including their interaction with atmospheric water. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N₂ adsorption/desorption, solid state ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy. It is found that CNNS is highly insulating (resistivity ρ ∼ 10¹⁰ Ω cm) and its impedance barely changes during a 20 min-measurement at room temperature and 70% relative humidity. Meanwhile, incorporating the semiconducting TiO₂ nanoparticles (∼10 nm) reduces ρ by one order of magnitude, and the decreased ρ is proportional to the exposure time to atmospheric water. Sorbed water shows up at low frequency (<10² Hz) with relaxation time in milliseconds, but the response intrinsic to CNNS and TiO₂/CNNS is evident at higher frequency (>10⁴ Hz) with relaxation time in microseconds. These two signals apparently correlate to the endothermic peak at ≤110 °C and >250 °C, respectively, in differential scanning calorimetry experiments. Universal power law analysis suggests charge hopping across the 3D conduction pathways, consistent with the capacitance in picofarad typical of grain response. Our work demonstrates that the use of various formalisms (i.e., impedance, permittivity, conductivity, and modulus) combined with a simple universal power law analysis provides insights into water-induced transport of the TiO₂/CNNS composite without complicated curve fitting procedure or dedicated humidity control.

F,O,S-Codoped Graphitic Carbon Nitride as an Efficient Photocatalyst for the Synthesis of Benzoxazoles and Benzimidazoles

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a metal-free heterogeneous catalyst that has attracted attention because of its good chemical stability, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness. In the work presented herein, F,O,S-codoped carbon nitride was synthesized by heating a mixture of melamine cyanurate and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid at 550 °C for 50 min. The obtained product was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, CHNS elemental analysis, total combustion-ion chromatography, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Results point to an F,O,S-codoped g-C3N4. The material was applied as a photocatalyst for the formation of benzoxazoles and benzimidazoles by condensation–aromatization of 2-aminophenol or 1,2-phenylenediamine with suitable aldehydes (viz. benzaldehyde, 4-chlorobenzaldehyde, 2-naphthaldehyde, 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde, and 2-methoxybenzaldehyde), obtaining yields of up to 90% in 15 min under visible light irradiation, with good selectivity and reusability. Thus, the reported findings suggest that this F,O,S-codoped g-C3N4 may hold promise as a metal-free photocatalyst for the rapid synthesis of 2-arylbenzoxazoles and 2-arylbenzimidazoles.

Photocatalytic Activity of TiO2/g-C3N4 Nanocomposites for Removal of Monochlorophenols from Water

This research employed g-C₃N₄ nanosheets in the hydrothermal synthesis of TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ hybrid photocatalysts. The TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ heterojunctions, well-dispersed TiO₂ nanoparticles on the g-C₃N₄ nanosheets, are effective photocatalysts for the degradation of monochlorophenols (MCPs: 2-CP, 3-CP, and 4-CP) which are prominent water contaminants. The removal efficiency of 2-CP and 4-CP reached 87% and 64%, respectively, after treatment of 25 ppm CP solutions with the photocatalyst (40TiO₂/g-C₃N₄, 1 g/L) and irradiation with UV-Vis light. Treatment of CP solutions with g-C₃N₄ nanosheets or TiO₂ alone in conjunction with irradiation gave removal efficiencies lower than 50%, which suggests the two act synergically to enhance the photocatalytic activity of the 40TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposite. Superoxide and hydroxyl radicals are key active species produced during CP photodegradation. In addition, the observed nitrogen and Ti³⁺ defects and oxygen vacancies in the TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposites may improve the light-harvesting ability of the composite and assist preventing rapid electron-hole recombination on the surface, enhancing the photocatalytic performance. In addition, interfacial interactions between the MCPs (low polarity) and thermally exfoliated carbon nitride in the TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposites may also enhance MCP degradation.
