Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to compare student learning of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) interpretation using immersive virtual reality (VR) and three-dimensional multiplanar (MP) reconstructions. METHODS Sixty first-year dental students were randomly allocated to two groups, VR and MP, and underwent a one-on-one educational intervention to identify anatomic structures using CBCT data. All participants completed three multiple-choice questionnaires (MCQs) before (T1), immediately after (T2), and 2 weeks following (T3) the intervention. Additionally, pre-survey, post-survey, NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX), and presence questionnaires were completed. Analysis of objective measures of performance on MCQs and subjective data from the questionnaires was completed (α = 0.05). RESULTS There was a significant increase in test performance and informational recall between T1-T2 and T1-T3 for VR and MP groups (p < 0.001). However, there were no significant differences in performance on MCQs between T2 and T3. Analysis of the Presence questionnaire indicated that the VR group felt decreased distraction (p = 0.013), increased realism (p = 0.035), and increased involvement (p = 0.047) during the educational intervention when compared with the MP group. Analysis of the NASA-TLX indicated that the VR group experienced more physical demand (p < 0.01) but similar cognitive demand when compared with the MP group. Qualitative responses indicated that the VR group had a more dynamic sense of visualization and manipulation compared to the MP group. CONCLUSION Results from this study show that VR is as effective as traditional MP methods of CBCT interpretation learning. Further benefits of VR educational intervention include increased involvement, realism and less distraction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The nasopalatine canal (NPC), or incisive canal, is located in the midline of the palate, posterior to the maxillary central incisors. Its anatomy is important in prosthetic dentistry procedures. This study aimed to assess the anatomical morphology of the NPC according to age, sex, and dental status using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in 335 patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this retrospective cross-sectional study, a total of 335 patients were recruited and categorized according to sex, age, and dental status. Individual CBCT images were analyzed in the sagittal, coronal, and axial planes. Also, we recorded the dimensions and morphological shape of the NPC and adjacent buccal bone plate (BBP) under standardized conditions. The associations between sex, age group, NPC shapes and types, and presence of central incisors were assessed. A significance level was set at P<0.05. RESULTS Mean labio-palatal and mediolateral measurements of the incisive foramen were 5.13±1.45 mm and 3.21±0.96 mm, whereas the mean diameter of Stenson foramen was 2.57±1.25 mm, and the total length of the NPC was 11.79±2.50 mm. Funnel, Y, and round-shaped canals were the most prevalent shapes of the NPC in sagittal, coronal, and axial planes. BBP was greater in men, with P=0.011, P=0.000, and P=0.001 at BBP1, BBP2, and BBP3, respectively. CONCLUSIONS NPC and BBP parameter values were slightly higher among male patients. NPC parameters increased with older age. The crest width of BBP decreased with older age and after missing maxillary central incisor teeth.

Abstract
Computed tomography (CT) has been recognized as a robust and dependable technique for delineating osseous alterations and anomalies within hard tissues. The necessity for accurate diagnosis and management of patients with temporomandibular disorders in dental practices has increasingly come to the forefront. There is ongoing scholarly debate regarding the equivalence of diagnostic outcomes yielded by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), which offers greater accessibility in dental settings than traditional CT, in identifying bony changes within the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Our principal aim was to conduct a systematic review of studies that compare the efficacy of CT and CBCT in the detailed assessment of bone conditions affecting the TMJ. An electronic search was conducted across databases: PubMed, Medline, Web of Science, Cochrane and Scopus. Two independent reviewers screened titles and abstracts against predefined inclusion criteria. The included articles underwent rigorous critical appraisal, during which relevant data were extracted and systematically presented in a tabular format. This systematic review incorporates 5 studies published between 2006 and 2015. In 3 studies, CBCT demonstrated comparable outcomes to CT, while 2 investigations revealed significantly enhanced accuracy for CBCT compared to CT, with reported accuracies of 0.95 ± 0.04, 0.77 ± 0.17, and 89-91% for CBCT. The aggregated evidence from the included studies indicates that CBCT offers comparable or superior accuracy in detecting osseous changes within TMJ structures. Owing to its lower radiation exposure and increased accessibility, CBCT emerges as the preferred choice over conventional CT for evaluating bony structures of the TMJ.

Abstract
Introduction Maxillary sinus pathology, particularly its association with odontogenic infections, is a significant concern in dentistry. This retrospective study explored the prevalence of maxillary sinus pathologies and their association with odontogenic infections in Saudi Arabia. Methods This retrospective study included 411 patients aged 20-80 years. Cone-beam computed tomography was performed to identify the presence, location, and characteristics of odontogenic infections and maxillary sinus pathologies. Patients' age and sex were also recorded. Results Sinusitis was prevalent in 50.6 % of the cases, with no significant sex or age differences in the pathology distribution. A notable association was found between odontogenic and sinus pathologies, particularly on the left side. Conclusion A significant prevalence of sinus pathologies, particularly sinusitis, was observed, with an association between odontogenic and sinus pathologies, notably on the left side. While acknowledging the limitations of the study, these findings underscore the need for integrated dental and sinus health assessments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the impact of molar distalization with clear aligners (CAs) on maxillary sinus parameters and its proximity to the root apices of maxillary molars using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). METHODS The study involved pre- and post-treatment CBCT images of 27 adult patients. MIMICS 21.0 software was used to measure maxillary sinus volume and surface area, while Invivo Dental 6.0 program was used to measure the sinus diameters and proximity of the maxillary molar root apices to the sinus floor. RESULTS Post-treatment, there was a marked increase in the average volume and surface area of the maxillary sinus on both sides; however, changes in dimensions were not statistically significant. Sinus proximity to the root apices of the maxillary molars showed statistically significant differences, particularly on the left side for all roots. Gender and age impacted the outcomes, with males and younger individuals showing more pronounced changes. No significant differences were observed between the left and right sinuses in all parameters. CONCLUSION Molar distalization with CAs increases maxillary sinus parameters, more notably in younger and male patients. All molar teeth roots moved toward the sinus, particularly the mesiobuccal root of the maxillary second molar protruded to the sinus.

Abstract
Background Knowledge of the mental foramen (MF) characteristics is crucial for avoiding iatrogenic injuries during dental implant placement, root canal treatment, orthognathic surgery, and other dental and surgical interventions. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) offers a valuable tool for evaluating the MF characteristics with its precise anatomical details. The current study investigates the horizontal and vertical position variations in addition to the exit angle of MF within the Syrian adult population. Materials and methods The sample included CBCT scans of 42 subjects with an equal number of males and females (21 males, 21 females), with no underlying pathology in the investigated region, mean age was 24.7 years (SD: 7.2 years). CBCT scans were retrospectively analyzed in terms of the vertical, horizontal, and exit angle direction of MF. The chi-square test was conducted to investigate statistical differences in terms of MF horizontal and vertical positions. A T-test was conducted to investigate statistical differences in terms of exit angle direction. Comparisons were conducted between males and females groups, and between the left and right sides in the total sample group. Results The most frequent horizontal position was position 3 (MF between the first and second premolars) on the right side (n=20, 47.61%), and on the left side (n=21, 50%). The most frequent vertical position was position 3 (MF below the apices of the premolars) on the right side (n=29, 69.04%), and on the left side (n=27, 64.28%). The exit angle of the MF was in a backward direction, with a mean value of 118.42° (SD: 6.45 degrees), and 115.97° (SD: 7.29 degrees) on the right and left side, respectively. Statistically significant differences were found in terms of the right vertical position between males and females (P value < 0.05). Conclusion Variations in MF characteristics exist in the Syrian population. Statistically significant differences were found in the right vertical position of MF. The current study findings necessitate precise preoperative three-dimensional imaging for dental interventions among this population. By establishing normative values for the Syrian population, the results can contribute to improved surgical planning and patient care, and can be used for comparative studies for more understanding of the human anatomical variations.

Abstract
The study aimed to (a) investigate the amount and characteristics of the surrounding bone of protruded molar roots into the maxillary sinus using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and (b) assess the correlation between the amount of bone with panoramic high-risk signs. Radiographs of 408 roots protruding beyond the sinus floor were evaluated. Axial CBCT images were used to investigate then classify eight characteristics of surrounding bone: no bone; bone < half the root girth in the proximal or buccal-palatal aspect; bone covering half the root girth in the proximal or buccal-palatal aspect; bone > half the root girth in the proximal or buccal-palatal aspect; and, complete bone. These were then grouped into four degrees of bone support: no bone; bone ≤ half the root girth; bone > half the root girth; and, complete bone. Panoramic signs were subclassified as: projection of root; interruption of the sinus floor; darkening of the root; upward curving of the sinus floor; absence of periodontal ligament space; and, absence of the lamina dura. Correlation between the degree of bone and the panoramic signs was evaluated using the Chi-square or Fisher's exact tests. Positive and negative predictive values, sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and receiver operating characteristic analysis were calculated. Complete bone support was the most common. 'Projection of root' had a high negative predictive value and sensitivity. 'Absence of the periodontal ligament space and lamina dura' had a high positive predictive value, specificity, accuracy, and area under the curve. These two signs were significantly correlated with the degree of bone support.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Trans- inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) implantation technique was wildly used while the potential appropriate angle range in which the residual alveolar bone can bear the stress without absorption are currently unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the stress distribution pattern of the interface between bone and implant by finite element analysis (FEA) to determine the appropriate range of the implant tilt angle. METHODS Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 120 patients with missing mandibular second molars and vertical bone height < 9 mm in the edentulous area were selected. The distances from the mandibular nerve canal to the buccal cortex, the lingual cortex and the alveolar ridge crest were measured by using a combination of software. The angular ranges of the buccal-lingual inclination of simulated trans-IAN implants were measured and three-dimensional finite element models were constructed in the mandibular second molar area according to the differences of the inclination angles. A vertical load (200N) was then applied to analyze the biomechanical conditions of the implant-bone interface during median occlusion. RESULTS The distance at the second molar from the nerve canal to the buccal cortex, lingual cortex and alveolar crest were 6.861 ± 1.194 mm, 2.843 ± 0.933 mm and 7.944 ± 0.77 mm. Trans-IAN implantation was feasible in 73.33% of patients. The minimum angle and maximum angles of the buccal-lingual inclination of the simulated implant were 19.135 ± 6.721° and 39.282 ± 6.581°. When a vertical static load of 200N was applied, the tensile stress in cortical bone gradually increased with the increase of the implant tilt angle. When the inclination angle reached 30°, the tensile stress (105.9 MPa) exceeded the yield strength (104 MPa) of cortical bone. Compared with the conventional implants, the stress peak value of the vertical ultra-short implant in cortical bone was greater than the stress peak value of the conventional implants at 10°(79.81 MPa) and 20°(82.83 MPa) and was smaller than the stress of the implant at 30°(105.9 MPa) and 40°(107.8 MPa). Therefore, when the bone mass allows, conventional-length implants should be selected whenever possible, and an operative range of the trans-IAN implantation in the mandibular second molar could be retained with an inclination angle of < 30°. CONCLUSIONS The mandibular nerve canal at the mandibular second molar was obviously biased to the lingual side, which ensured sufficient bone mass at the buccal side. In most patients with severe mandibular atrophy, it was possible to maintain a safe distance from the nerve canal with conventional-length implants via the trans-IAN implantation technique.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The aim of this study is to evaluate the changes in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and the relationship between age, sex, and types of TMJ change using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). METHODS AND MATERIAL CBCT records of 200 patients (123 women and 67 men) were retrieved and assessed. Right and left TMJs were evaluated separately, resulting in a total of 400 TMJs. The images were analyzed using On demand 3D Application The radiographic findings were classified as erosion, proliferative changes mainly, including flattening and osteophytes of the condyle, sclerosis, Ely cyst, hypoplasia and hyperplasia of the condyles, ankylosis, and joint cavity. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, paired T-tests, and repeated measure ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) in SPSS Software. RESULTS The most prevalent types of condylar bony changes observed was osteophyte (63.5%) followed by flattening of the articular surface (42%), erosion (40%), ankylosis (10%) and sclerosis (10%). 7.5% of joints showed hyperplastic condyles but only 2% showed hypoplasia. The least prevalent change observed was Ely Cyst (1%). Osteophyte was the most prevalent change observed in all age groups and both sexes except for men aged 31 ~ 50, where flattening was more frequent. A statistically significant difference was found between sex and prevalence of erosion in the age group of 10 ~ 30 (P = 0.001); as well as between sex and condylar hyperplasia in the same age group. CONCLUSION Based on the findings of this research, the prevalence of bony changes of TMJ from highest to lowest is as follows: osteophyte, flattening of the articular surface, erosion, ankylosis, sclerosis, hyperplastic condyles, hypoplastic condyles and Ely Cyst. CBCT is an accurate 3 dimensional imaging modality for assessment of TMJ bony structures.

Abstract
This study included 46 patients with class II malocclusion ranging in age from 19 to 39 years old treated with bilateral sagittal split ramous osteotomy (BSSRO). Left and right temporomandibular joints (TMJs) of each subject were evaluated independently with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) before operation (T1), 1 week after operation (T2), and 1 year after operation (T3) and assessed the effects of orthognathic surgery (OGS) on the temporomandibular joint disease (TMD) symptoms. Temporomandibular joint morphology evaluation included condylar volume, condylar area, cortical bone thickness, depth of the mandibular fossa, fossa thickness, joint nodule angle, joint space, and condyle-fossa relationship, which were calculated by using the Mimics software and 3-matic software. Data were statistically analyzed with SPSS software (P <0.05 means statistically significant). In our study, bilateral TMJs have no difference in T3. Bilateral sagittal split ramous osteotomy had no significant effect on the articular fossa. The condyle volume and surface area decreased from T1 to T3, but the cortical thickness of the bone did not change significantly. More anterior condyle positions in T1 and more posterior in T3.21 patients had at least 1 sign or symptom of TMD in T1 and 27 patients in T3. Four patients who were asymptomatic in T1 developed pain after surgery, 10 developed noises, 12 showed limited mouth opening, and 8 had abnormal opening patterns. It is concluded that more condylar posterior position after BSSRO and the reduction of condyle may be related to the enlargement of anterior space. The number of patients with joint symptoms increased postoperative, and the impact of BSSRO on TMD may be negative.

Abstract
High-fidelity three-dimensional (3D) models of tooth-bone structures are valuable for virtual dental treatment planning; however, they require integrating data from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and intraoral scans (IOS) using methods that are either error-prone or time-consuming. Hence, this study presents Deep Dental Multimodal Fusion (DDMF), an automatic multimodal framework that reconstructs 3D tooth-bone structures using CBCT and IOS. Specifically, the DDMF framework comprises CBCT and IOS segmentation modules as well as a multimodal reconstruction module with novel pixel representation learning architectures, prior knowledge-guided losses, and geometry-based 3D fusion techniques. Experiments on real-world large-scale datasets revealed that DDMF achieved superior segmentation performance on CBCT and IOS, achieving a 0.17 mm average symmetric surface distance (ASSD) for 3D fusion with a substantial processing time reduction. Additionally, clinical applicability studies have demonstrated DDMF's potential for accurately simulating tooth-bone structures throughout the orthodontic treatment process.

Abstract
Since the development of CBCT has been utilized in dentistry, the images of the CBCT can assist the surgeon to evaluate the anatomy carefully. Despite the value of radiology evaluation, implant procedures may require additional consideration rather than only evaluating the anatomical factors. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the predictability of using CBCT alone to plan for implant placement in edentulous patients digitally. CBCT images were analyzed by clinicians, measuring the maxillary and mandibular ridge heights and widths digitally of four predetermined implant sites in the maxillary and two selected implant sites in the mandibular arches of 91 patients planning for implant-supported overdenture. A total of 47 patients out of the 91 had completed implant placement on the edentulous ridge, contributing to 55 upper and/or lower arches (136 dental implants). Both predictabilities are low, implying that CBCT planning for implant placement on the edentulous ridge is not a good index and is insufficient to predict the surgical procedures as a solo method. The findings of this study indicate that digital planning by CBCT is insufficient to serve as an individual tool to predict implant procedures. Further information and evaluation must be considered for implant placement in the edentulous ridge.

Abstract
Study Design: Descriptive cross-sectional. Objective: To determine the morphology and morphometry of the nasopalatine canal (NPC) and incisive foramen (IF) in an African population. Methods: Measurements of the NPC and the IF were carried out on 150 Cone-Beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. The maxillary bone thickness anterior to the NPC was measured at 3 levels. Independent t-test and Chi-square test were performed to determine the presence of sexual dimorphism. Results: The presence of one Stenson's foramen was most prevalent. The mean length of NPC was 13.21 ± 3.25 mm with significantly longer canals in males. The most prevalent shape of NPC was cylindrical in sagittal view and a single canal in coronal view. The mean angulation of NPC was 118.42° to the horizontal plane. The average dimensions of the IF were 3.53 mm and 3.07 mm in the anteroposterior and mediolateral diameter, respectively, while the most common shape was round. The anterior maxillary bone was thicker in males and generally reduced in thickness from the anterior nasal spine superiorly towards the alveolar crest inferiorly. Conclusion: This study highlights the anatomical characteristics of the NPC and IF, with significant sexual dimorphism observed regarding the number of Stenson's foramina, length of NPC, shapes of the NPC and IF, as well as alveolar bone thickness anterior to NPC.

Abstract
Objectives The present research was done to assess the crestal bone changes in immediate and delayed dental implant placement. Materials and Method Twenty four implant sites in participants within the age group of 25-60 years in both genders were done with immediate (Group I) and delayed implant (Group II) placement method. Clinical parameters such as pain, mobility, and radiographic assessment for crestal bone alterations were recorded at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months. Results and Conclusion On intergroup assessment, the mean variation of the pain, mobility, and crestal bone loss was insignificant.

Abstract
Distortion of dentition may occur in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans due to artifacts, and further imaging is frequently required to produce digital twins. The use of a plaster model is common; however, it has certain drawbacks. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of different digital dentition models over that of plaster casts. Plaster models, alginate impressions, intraoral scan (IOS) images, and CBCT images of 20 patients were obtained. The desktop model scanner was used to scan the alginate impression twice, five minutes and two hours after impression-making. Using an IOS, the full arch was scanned in segments using CS 3600 and simultaneously with i700 wireless. The digital twins obtained from the alginate impression and IOS were superimposed with those obtained from the plaster cast. The differences and distances at each reference point were measured. Scans of alginate impressions after two hours showed the greatest discrepancies, but these were all less than the CBCT voxel size of 0.39 mm. Alginate impression scans and IOS are suitable supplements to CBCT compared to the plaster model. Accuracy can be improved by scanning the alginate impression within five minutes or by intraoral scanning of the entire arch with segmentation.

Abstract
Objective It is essential to be aware of the potential effects of orthodontic treatment on tissues and anatomical structures associated with the masticatory system, especially the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Little information is available about the consequences of molar distalization on the TMJ. Therefore, this study is aimed at investigating the changes of the condyle-fossa relationship after molar distalization using the distal jet appliance. Materials and Methods The sample consisted of twenty-five patients (mean age 20.4 ± 2.6) who underwent molar distalization by the distal jet appliance. CBCT scans were taken before (T0) and after (T1) the completion of the molar distalization. Joint spaces (anterior, superior, and posterior) and cephalometric vertical angles (SN.GOME and Björk sum) were measured and compared at T0 and T1. Results Superior and posterior joint spaces increased significantly after molar distalization (PS 0.29 mm, P < 0.001, SS 0.06 mm, P < 0.5). Vertical cephalometric angles also increased after molar distalization by the distal jet appliance (SN.GOME 0.92°, Björk 1.11°). Conclusion There was a statistically significant increase in the superior and posterior joint spaces after molar distalization. However, this increase may not be of clinical importance. The vertical dimension has also increased.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Tissue breakdown was assessed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) using autofluorescence around implants with ligatures, on a dog hemimandible. Influence of section thickness on the accuracy of histometrical observations was also evaluated, in comparison with thin sections in light microscopy. MATERIAL AND METHODS Three months after tooth extraction, implants were placed. Two months after abutment placement, ligatures were placed with no plaque control. 11 months post-implantation, the animal was sacrificed. Undecalcified thin (30 µm) sections were cut, stained and evaluated by light microscopy to be used as a reference. Additional sections were performed, so that another pair of unstained thick sections resulted (250-300 µm). Tissue loss was assessed using histomorphometric parameters under CLSM and was compared to the light microscopy reference ones. RESULTS Morphometry confirmed tissue loss more pronounced on the "thick" and quick sections, when compared to the time-consuming and technique-sensitive "thin" ones. CONCLUSIONS Within the limits of the present study, the adequacy of histometrical observations under CLSM reveal commensurable information about soft-tissue-bone-implant details, when compared to traditional light microscopy histological protocols. The CLSM investigation may seem demanding, yet the richness of data acquired may justify this approach, provided seatbacks caused by improper manipulation of "thick" sections are avoided.

Abstract
Maxillary sinus lift surgery is applied to compensate for the reduced vertical height in the posterior maxilla to facilitate placing a dental implant of a suitable length. Pathological conditions may be accidentally discovered, which necessitate careful assessment and management to prevent the infection of the maxillofacial complex and eventually bone grafting and dental implant failure. This case report describes an approach for the management of Schneiderian membrane perforation associated with the removal of an antral pseudocyst for successful dental implant therapy. A 70-year-old healthy Caucasian male presented for implant therapy to replace a non-restorable maxillary molar. Initial examination revealed the need for a sinus lift procedure to prepare the site for implant placement. A 3D CBCT evaluation before surgery revealed an incidental finding of a pathological lesion at the surgical site. The histological analysis of a biopsy specimen retrieved during implant site preparation showed findings consistent with antral pseudocyst. The resulting perforation of the sinus membrane was treated, and an adequate period of healing was given. A thickened sinus membrane was detected upon surgical exposure for implant placement. The novel technique illustrated could result in a fibrotic repaired sinus membrane and help shorten the time required for dental implant treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this review was to investigate the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in maxillofacial computer-assisted surgical planning (CASP) workflows with the discussion of limitations and possible future directions. MATERIALS AND METHODS An in-depth search of the literature was undertaken to review articles concerned with the application of AI for segmentation, multimodal image registration, virtual surgical planning (VSP), and three-dimensional (3D) printing steps of the maxillofacial CASP workflows. RESULTS The existing AI models were trained to address individual steps of CASP, and no single intelligent workflow was found encompassing all steps of the planning process. Segmentation of dentomaxillofacial tissue from computed tomography (CT)/cone-beam CT imaging was the most commonly explored area which could be applicable in a clinical setting. Nevertheless, a lack of generalizability was the main issue, as the majority of models were trained with the data derived from a single device and imaging protocol which might not offer similar performance when considering other devices. In relation to registration, VSP and 3D printing, the presence of inadequate heterogeneous data limits the automatization of these tasks. CONCLUSION The synergy between AI and CASP workflows has the potential to improve the planning precision and efficacy. However, there is a need for future studies with big data before the emergent technology finds application in a real clinical setting. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The implementation of AI models in maxillofacial CASP workflows could minimize a surgeon's workload and increase efficiency and consistency of the planning process, meanwhile enhancing the patient-specific predictability.

Anatomical study of the maxillary sinus: which characteristics can influence its volume? SURGICAL AND RADIOLOGIC ANATOMY : SRA 2023; 45:81-87. Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate whether there is a relationship between the volume of the maxillary sinus and individual parameters such as gender, side, posterior tooth absence, sinus membrane thickening, bony septa, vertical and sagittal skeletal patterns. METHODS The tomographic volume of the maxillary sinus from 211 individuals (422 sides) was evaluated using Horos DICOM Viewer Software. Bony septa and sinus membrane thickening were classified as absent or present. At the same time, loss of one or more teeth in the posterior region of the maxilla (except for the third molars) was considered. The t test was applied to analyze maxillary sinus volume according to gender, age, side, posterior tooth absence, sinus membrane thickening and bony septa. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Tukey's post-hoc test was applied to compare sagittal and vertical patterns. Pearson's correlation coefficient was also used to verify the association between maxillary sinus volume, age and skeletal patterns. RESULTS Concerning the sagittal skeletal pattern, a statistically significant difference was observed between Classes II and III (p = 0.05) and it was confirmed by the Pearson's correlation coefficient (r = - 0.107/p = 0.029). No statistically significant differences were observed between the maxillary sinus volume according to gender (p = 0.06), side (p = 0.37), posterior tooth absence (p = 0.92), sinus membrane thickening (p = 0.47), bony septa (0.89) and vertical skeletal pattern (p = 0.67). No significant differences were observed with age (r = - 0.076/p = 0.109) and the vertical skeletal pattern (r = - 0.078/p = 0.108). CONCLUSION Maxillary sinus volume was influenced by the sagittal skeletal pattern and was higher in Class III individuals.

Abstract
Accurate segmentation of mandibular canals in lower jaws is important in dental implantology. Medical experts manually determine the implant position and dimensions from 3D CT images to avoid damaging the mandibular nerve inside the canal. In this paper, we propose a novel dual-stage deep learning-based scheme for the automatic segmentation of the mandibular canal. In particular, we first enhance the CBCT scans by employing the novel histogram-based dynamic windowing scheme, which improves the visibility of mandibular canals. After enhancement, we designed 3D deeply supervised attention UNet architecture for localizing the Volumes Of Interest (VOIs), which contain the mandibular canals (i.e., left and right canals). Finally, we employed the Multi-Scale input Residual UNet (MSiR-UNet) architecture to segment the mandibular canals using VOIs accurately. The proposed method has been rigorously evaluated on 500 and 15 CBCT scans from our dataset and from the public dataset, respectively. The results demonstrate that our technique improves the existing performance of mandibular canal segmentation to a clinically acceptable range. Moreover, it is robust against the types of CBCT scans in terms of field of view.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the spatial changes of unopposed molars within the period between the antagonist extraction and the final implant restoration using data from cone beam computed tomography. METHODS A total of 59 patients with 68 unopposed molars were included in this study. Three-dimensional models reconstructed from cone beam computed tomography data before and after loss of the antagonist were superimposed to measure the spatial changes. The overeruption and tipping of target teeth were calculated by coordinate values. RESULTS The result of overeruption over the study period (9.2 ± 4.3 months) was expressed by two values: the mean overeruption of molar cups (0.432 mm) and the maximum overeruption of cusps (0.753 mm), which were statistically significant compared to the baseline level (p < 0.001). The average tipping was 1.717 degrees in the buccal direction. CONCLUSIONS Unopposed molars displayed overeruption throughout the study period (9.2 ± 4.3 months), which indicates that the clinicians should pay attention to the possibilities of overeruption and make appropriate interventions in their clinical practice. The establishment of three-dimensional measuring methods using cone beam computed tomography data helps analyze spatial changes.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to analyze the relationships between bone density measurements obtained using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and morphometric parameters of bone determined by histomorphometric analysis. Materials and Methods In this in vivo study, 30 samples from the maxillary bones of 7 sheep were acquired using a trephine. The bone samples were returned to their original sites, and the sheep heads were imaged using CBCT. On the CBCT images, gray values were calculated. In the histomorphometric analysis, the total bone volume, the trabecular bone volume (referred to simply as bone volume), and the trabecular thickness were assessed. Results Statistical testing showed significant correlations between CBCT gray values and total bone volume (r=0.537, P=0.002), bone volume (r=0.672, P<0.001), and trabecular thickness (r=0.692, P<0.001), as determined via the histomorphometric analysis. Conclusion The results indicate a significant and acceptable association between CBCT gray values and bone volume, suggesting that CBCT may be used in bone densitometry.

Abstract
‘Kissing molars’, were described by Van Hoof in 1973 as when the occlusal surfaces of impacted molars are united by the same follicular space and the roots point in the opposite direction. There are very few published cases in the literature, and it is an extremely rare form of impaction. This manuscript concerns the diagnosis and management of a rare dentoalveolar clinical and radiographic presentation, which may be encountered by and be of interest to dental practitioners in both primary and secondary care.

Abstract
Objectives: Soft and hard tissue breakdown was histologically and radiologically assessed around implants with alternate, consecutively placed ligatures on the same edentulous dog hemimandible. The influence of ligatured implants (LI) on adjacent non-ligatured implants (NLI, as a possible naturally induced peri-implantitis) was also evaluated. Material and Methods: Three months after tooth extraction, five dental implants were placed in the dog hemimandible. Two months after abutment placement, ligatures were placed subsequently two months apart on alternate implants, while both intermediate implants were left without ligatures. Ligatures were kept in place during the entire experiment, and no plaque control measures were taken. Eleven months post-implantation, the animal was sacrificed. Undecalcified ground sections were cut, stained with Masson Goldner and MOVAT Pentachrome and evaluated by light microscopy. Soft and hard tissue loss was assessed using histomorphometric and CBCT parameters. Results: All NLI presented deep false peri-implant pockets on the oral aspect and pronounced vertical bone resorption on the buccal aspect. After 2, 4 and 6 months, during the breakdown period, more than 30% of the bone was lost in LI in all directions, while, despite immediate vicinity, NLI displayed less destruction. Intense inflammation, typical for induced peri-implantitis, was present, with similar intensity in LI as NLI, but in different parts of the lesions. Morphometry confirmed intense soft tissue inflammation, more bone resorption and higher amounts of infiltrated connective tissue in LI when compared with NLI. Conclusion: Within the limits of the present pilot study, the adequacy of the experimental dog model based on ligature-induced peri-implantitis was able to be successfully challenged by non-ligature models of spontaneously occurring peri-implant inflammation, while meeting the requirements for experimental designs with a very small numbers of animals. The influence of implants with severe peri-implantitis on adjacent implants resulted in less than expected tissue loss in the latter accession numbers.

Abstract
We aimed to produce a narrative review of planning orthognathic surgery, chronologically. Also, to present flaws of methods and the future of orthognathic surgery planning. The search was carried out mainly in PubMed, SCOPUS, Embase, and Cochrane databases. Also was complemented by manual search in reference lists from identified studies and in grey literature. The first orthognathic surgery was reported in 1849, and it took more than a century for the development of the traditional orthognathic 2D planning. Besides the advances, surgeons observed failures and lacks on 2D method in representing with reliability the facial and maxillary tridimensional structure (3D). With technological developments in 90s and 2000s, methodological improvements were granted, and the 3D protocol was created. The CASS and Charlotte protocols were the earliest 3D planning protocols conceived. Since then, some steps were simplified, and new technologies are being developed and added to create a more reliable and precise way of planning orthognathic surgery.

Abstract
Abstract
Objective. Recently, dental cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) methods have been improved to significantly reduce radiation dose while maintaining image resolution with minimal equipment cost. In low-dose CBCT environments, metallic inserts such as implants, crowns, and dental fillings cause severe artifacts, which result in a significant loss of morphological structures of teeth in reconstructed images. Such metal artifacts prevent accurate 3D bone-teeth-jaw modeling for diagnosis and treatment planning. However, the performance of existing metal artifact reduction (MAR) methods in handling the loss of the morphological structures of teeth in reconstructed CT images remains relatively limited. In this study, we developed an innovative MAR method to achieve optimal restoration of anatomical details. Approach. The proposed MAR approach is based on a two-stage deep learning-based method. In the first stage, we employ a deep learning network that utilizes intra-oral scan data as side-inputs and performs multi-task learning of auxiliary tooth segmentation. The network is designed to improve the learning ability of capturing teeth-related features effectively while mitigating metal artifacts. In the second stage, a 3D bone-teeth-jaw model is constructed with weighted thresholding, where the weighting region is determined depending on the geometry of the intra-oral scan data. Main results. The results of numerical simulations and clinical experiments are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach. Significance. We propose for the first time a MAR method using radiation-free intra-oral scan data as supplemental information on the tooth morphological structures of teeth, which is designed to perform accurate 3D bone-teeth-jaw modeling in low-dose CBCT environments.

Abstract
Osteomas of the maxilla and the mandible are rare, benign, and slow-growing tumors arising from the bone cells. They are more frequently located on the mandible than the maxilla, with mandibular body, angle, and condyle being more frequently affected. The development of a peripheral osteoma at the mandibular ramus is a rare occurrence, and few cases have been published in English literature. Even though the developmental process of this pathologic entity is characterized as slow growing, little data are known about the developmental rate of the peripheral osteomas of the mandible. In our paper, we present a case of peripheral osteoma of the external surface of the right mandibular ramus that was diagnosed 10 years earlier; its dimensions were measured precisely at that time with CT. The patient declined a surgical operation, and 10 years after the initial diagnosis, she visited our department with an increase in the size of the lesion and asked for a re-evaluation. A new CBCT was performed, and accurate measurement of the new dimensions of the lesion was conducted; this was compared with the previous dimensions. The comparison of the current CBCT with the CT performed 10 years earlier permitted to calculate the growth rate of osteoma that was approximately 2.0 mm/year.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To develop and validate a simple approach for building cost-effective imaging phantoms for Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) using a modified Polyjet additive manufacturing technology where a single material can mimic a range of human soft-tissue radiation attenuation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Single material test phantoms using a cubic lattice were designed in 3-Matic 15.0 software . Keeping the individual cubic lattice volume constant, eight different percentage ratio (R) of air: material from 0% to 70% with a 10% increment were assigned to each sample. The phantoms were printed in three materials, namely Vero PureWhite, VeroClear and TangoPlus using Polyjet technology. The CT value analysis, non-contact profile measurement and microCT-based volumetric analysis was performed for all the samples. RESULTS The printed test phantoms produced a grey value spectrum equivalent to the radiation attenuation of human soft tissues in the range of -757 to +286 HU on CT. The results from dimensional comparison analysis of the printed phantoms with the digital test phantoms using non-contact profile measurement showed a mean accuracy of 99.07 % and that of micro-CT volumetric analysis showed mean volumetric accuracy of 84.80-94.91%. The material and printing costs of developing 24 test phantoms was 83.00 Euro. CONCLUSIONS The study shows that additive manufacturing-guided macrostructure manipulation modifies successfully the radiographic visibility of a material in CBCT imaging with 1 mm3 resolution, helping customization of imaging phantoms.

Abstract
Combining evidence-based dentistry (EBD) with years of clinician experience should have a great impact on treatment planning and decision-making for achieving the best treatment outcomes, thus warranting patient satisfaction. In addition, understanding and appreciating the role of biology on the reliance on and progress of treatment healing is also a crucial element that clinicians should always keep in mind in their dental practice. This study demonstrates that clinicians should always rely on their own clinical and radiographical test results for evaluation and judgment of any clinical situation before presenting and proceeding with any dental treatment for their patients.

Abstract
Background Understanding the anatomical relationship between the maxillary sinus floor (MSF) and the posterior maxillary teeth (PMT) is important when planning the orthodontic intrusion of the posterior teeth. This study aimed to determine the vertical relationship between posterior maxillary teeth and maxillary sinus floor in different skeletal classes in the Chinese adult population. Methods This is a retrospective cross-sectional study involved cone beam computed tomography images of 298 adult patients (145 males and 153 females) between 20 and 45 years old. The sample was categorized according to A point, Nasion, B point (ANB) angle into 102 Class I, 102 Class II, and 94 Class III malocclusion. Non-parametric Wilcoxon Mann–Whitney U and Kruskal–Wallis tests were used to compare the studied groups. The Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC) was used to assess the intra- and inter-observer reliability analysis. Results Overall, there was a statistically significant difference in the mean distance between both genders (P < 0.001). The measured distance increased with age in all posterior tooth roots (P < 0.001). The root apex in the sagittal view appeared to be closer to the maxillary sinus than in the coronal view; 2.2 ± 4.3 and 3.1 ± 5.5 mm, respectively. The most frequent root scores were Type 1 and Type 2P. In both sagittal and coronal views, Class I demonstrated a higher Type 2P prevalence, whereas Class III showed a lower prevalence. The second molars’ mesiobuccal root had the largest number of penetration in the three examined skeletal classes. Conclusions Maxillary molars of Class I malocclusion with the majority of Type 2P root-sinus relationship have the highest possible risk of root resorption during molar intrusion due to cortical bone encroachment, while Class III malocclusion showed the least possible risk. Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess whether the use of intraoral scans (IOS) is an eligible alternative to conventional plaster casts in terms of surgical accuracy of three-dimensionally planned bimaxillary osteotomies. This retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent bimaxillary surgery between 2016 and 2020 in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen. Three-dimensional virtual planning was performed with the use of plaster casts in one group and IOS in the other group. Cone beam computed tomography scans were acquired preoperatively and at 1 week following surgery. By using voxel-based matching, the maxillary movements were quantified in six degrees of freedom. The primary outcome variable, surgical accuracy, was defined as the difference between the planned maxillary movements and those achieved. Of 152 patients, 113 were documented with plaster casts and 39 with IOS. The surgical accuracy was comparable in terms of maxillary vertical, sagittal, and transverse translations, as well as roll and yaw. Maxillary pitch (difference 0.55 ± 0.26°; P = 0.001) was in favour of the IOS group. This study demonstrated that IOS can be used as an alternative to conventional plaster casts in the three-dimensional planning of bimaxillary osteotomies.

Abstract
PURPOSE Reconstruction plates are frequently used to treat mandibular segmental defects. The aim of this study is to compare the biomechanical performance of a 3-dimensional-printed self-designed titanium alloy reconstruction plate with that of the traditional reconstruction plate in mandible reconstruction. The analyzed parameters of the self-designed reconstruction plate, including plate length (100 mm and 125 mm), plate thickness (2.1, 2.4, and 2.7 mm), and bone mass (100, 75, and 50%), were also evaluated. METHODS An artificial mandible with anatomical geometry was used to develop the self-designed reconstructed plate. Both in vitro experiments and finite element simulations were performed for the biomechanical comparison of the self-designed and traditional reconstruction plates. In finite element analysis, 3 major muscle forces of mandible movement were set as the loading condition, and the displacement of the condyle was fixed in all directions as the boundary condition. RESULTS The biomechanical performances (stresses in the plate and strains in bone) of the self-designed reconstruction plate were superior to those of the traditional plate. Factorial analysis indicated that plate length and thickness had significant effects on decreasing stresses of the plate and mandibular bone. CONCLUSIONS The self-designed reconstruction plate might have a benefit to reduce the stresses/strains in plate itself and surrounding bone.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Providing ultrasound images of periapical lesions may be problematic depending on the thickness of the overlying cortical bone. Clinically, it is crucial to determine the cut-off value of overlaying bone thickness in terms of interference with ultrasound imaging in conjunction with assessment of changes in periapical jaw bone lesions. Our aim was to determine the minimum amount of overlaying buccal bone thickness of artificial periapical lesions in order to be visible by ultrasound imaging and to compare width, height, depth, surface area and volume measurements of detectable periapical lesions obtained from ultrasound and CBCT images. METHODS Periapical lesions were created in 16 molar teeth of sheep mandibles. Cavities were enlarged until the borders of lesions were visible on 14 MHz hockey probe ultrasound imaging. CBCT and ultrasound images were obtained simultaneously after drilling and enlarging each size of the cavities and replacing the teeth in their sockets. two observers separately assessed images twice within 2 weeks of interval. By using CBCT and ultrasound images, buccal bone thickness, maximum width, height, depth, surface area and volume of periapical lesions were measured. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was utilized and significance level was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS The mean buccal bone thickness ranged between 1.21 mm and 1.31 mm for both imaging techniques. For the measurement of buccal bone thickness, periapical lesion width, height, depth, surface area, and volume excellent ICC values were found in terms of intrarater (ranging between 0.907 and 1) and inter-rater (ranging between 0.864 and 1) reliability for both observers and their readings. There were no statistically significant differences for both observers and for their two readings between ultrasound and CBCT measurements of buccal bone thickness, and periapical lesion width and height (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS We suggested that a buccal thickness of approximately 1.28 mm might be accepted as a cut-off value for the detection of periapical lesions with 14 MHz hockey probe ultrasound. High resolution ultrasound provided accurate information for the measurement of buccal bone thickness and lesion width and height.

Abstract
An osteoma is a benign bone lesion with no clear pathogenesis, almost exclusive to the craniofacial area. Osteomas show very slow continuous growth, even in adulthood, unlike other bony lesions. Since these lesions are frequently asymptomatic, the diagnosis is usually made by plain radiography or by a computed tomography (CT) scan performed for other reasons. Rarely, the extensive growth could determine aesthetic or functional problems that vary according to different locations. Radiographically, osteomas appear as radiopaque lesions similar to bone cortex, and may determine bone expansion. Cone beam CT is the optimal imaging modality for assessing the relationship between osteomas and adjacent structures, and for surgical planning. The differential diagnosis includes several inflammatory and tumoral pathologies, but the typical craniofacial location may aid in the diagnosis. Due to the benign nature of osteomas, surgical treatment is limited to symptomatic lesions. Radical surgical resection is the gold standard therapy; it is based on a minimally invasive surgical approach with the aim of achieving an optimal cosmetic result. Reconstructive surgery for an osteoma is quite infrequent and reserved for patients with large central osteomas, such as big mandibular or maxillary lesions. In this regard, computer-assisted surgery guarantees better outcomes, providing the possibility of preoperative simulation of demolitive and reconstructive surgery.

Abstract
The study aimed to analyze the uses of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the diagnosis and treatment in various dental specialties. This 4-year cross-sectional study analyzed the records of 1409 individuals who underwent a CBCT at the Oral and Maxillofacial Center at Sheba Medical Center, Israel. The average age of the patients was 27.9 ± 11.5 (range: 9-86 years). Patients were referred for CBCT by the following departments: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (1063; 75.5%), Endodontics (182; 12.9%), Periodontology (122; 8.6%) and Orthodontics (42; 3.0%). Most CBCT radiographs evaluated the maxilla (774; 55.0%), followed by the mandible (481; 34.1%) and both (154; 10.9%). The target anatomical structures included: bone (694; 49.3%), teeth (307; 21.7%), and both jaws (408; 29.0%). The main indications for CBCT use were: assessment of anatomical structures and implant sites (787; 55.9%), determine root canals morphology (182; 12.9%), visualization of impacted teeth, tooth alignment, and localization (177; 12.6%), suspected cysts or tumors (148; 10.5%), evaluation of Temporomandibular joint disorders (106; 7.5%) and other reasons (9; 0.6%). In 279 (19.8%) of cases, the diagnosis changed following CBCT, mainly in Orthodontics tooth analysis (28 (66.7%); p < 0.001). Practitioners and health authorities should be aware of this baseline information regarding CBCT use in the diagnosis and assessment of various oral and maxillofacial pathologies, anomalies and tooth position relative to anatomic structures. Continuing research and publications of CBCT utilization and guidelines are recommended.

Abstract
Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a diverse 3D x-ray imaging technique that has gained significant popularity in dental radiology in the last two decades. CBCT overcomes the limitations of traditional two-dimensional dental imaging and enables accurate depiction of multiplanar details of maxillofacial bony structures and surrounding soft tissues. In this review article, we provide an updated status on dental CBCT imaging and summarise the technical features of currently used CBCT scanner models, extending to recent developments in scanner technology, clinical aspects, and regulatory perspectives on dose optimisation, dosimetry, and diagnostic reference levels. We also consider the outlook of potential techniques along with issues that should be resolved in providing clinically more effective CBCT examinations that are optimised for the benefit of the patient.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to quantitatively assess the residual adhesive on orthodontic ceramic bracket-removed dental surface. In orthodontic process, ceramic bracket was repeated debonding physically, then the adhesive remained on the dental surface. The residual adhesive caused a lack of adhesive strength between dental and ceramic bracket. Since commonly used adhesive in orthodontics is translucent, residual adhesive is hard to be detected with conventional microscopes. Therefore, 1310 nm center wavelength swept-source OCT system based on laboratory customized image processing algorithm was used for the precise detection of residual adhesive on tooth surface. The algorithm separates residual adhesive from dental surface by comparing the height of adjacent B-scan images, while providing color-scaled images emphasizing the thickness information of residual adhesive. Finally, the acquired results were compared with microscopic and adhesive remnant index scoring gold standards, while the comparison confirmed the potential merits and the improvements of the proposed method over gold standards.

Abstract
The most common imaging technique for dental diagnoses and treatment monitoring is X-ray imaging, which evolved from the first intraoral radiographs to high-quality three-dimensional (3D) Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). Other imaging techniques have shown potential, such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). We have recently reported on the boundaries of these two types of techniques, regarding. the dental fields where each one is more appropriate or where they should be both used. The aim of the present study is to explore the unique capabilities of the OCT technique to optimize X-ray units imaging (i.e., in terms of image resolution, radiation dose, or contrast). Two types of commercially available and widely used X-ray units are considered. To adjust their parameters, a protocol is developed to employ OCT images of dental conditions that are documented on high (i.e., less than 10 μm) resolution OCT images (both B-scans/cross sections and 3D reconstructions) but are hardly identified on the 200 to 75 μm resolution panoramic or CBCT radiographs. The optimized calibration of the X-ray unit includes choosing appropriate values for the anode voltage and current intensity of the X-ray tube, as well as the patient’s positioning, in order to reach the highest possible X-rays resolution at a radiation dose that is safe for the patient. The optimization protocol is developed in vitro on OCT images of extracted teeth and is further applied in vivo for each type of dental investigation. Optimized radiographic results are compared with un-optimized previously performed radiographs. Also, we show that OCT can permit a rigorous comparison between two (types of) X-ray units. In conclusion, high-quality dental images are possible using low radiation doses if an optimized protocol, developed using OCT, is applied for each type of dental investigation. Also, there are situations when the X-ray technology has drawbacks for dental diagnosis or treatment assessment. In such situations, OCT proves capable to provide qualitative images.

Abstract
Background Dental implants are a common restorative method used to replace missing teeth. Implant placement techniques guided by three-dimensional imaging and navigation are becoming more widely available. Objective The present review focused on the following questions: 1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of 2-D versus 3-D imaging in dental implantology? 2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of freehand implant placement in comparison with navigation-guided implant placement? Methods A systematic review was performed, based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) statement. The following libraries were searched for relevant literature: PubMed, Embase, Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Wissenschaftlichen Medizinischen Fachgesellschaften (AWMF) Online, and the Cochrane Library. The risk of bias was assessed using the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SiGN) checklist. A total of 70 studies were included after screening, and the evidence from these was gathered for review. Results Three-dimensional imaging is advantageous in terms of image quality, and it provides a distortion-free evaluation of the implant site. However, it is also associated with higher costs and increased radiation exposure. Dynamic and static navigation are equal in accuracy and are both more accurate compared with the freehand method. No benefit in terms of implant survival could be demonstrated within the first 5 years for any specific method. Discussion A panoramic X-ray with a reference body often provides sufficient imaging and is the primary method for two-dimensional imaging. Cone beam computed tomography with low-dose protocol settings should be used if three-dimensional imaging is needed. Navigational support should be considered in the event of especially complex cases. Conclusion The guidance technique used for implant placement should be decided on an individual basis. With the increasing availability of three-dimensional imaging, there should also be an increase in awareness of radiation exposure. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate bone availability at the infrazygomatic crest for extra-alveolar bone miniscrew insertion in subjects with different vertical and sagittal skeletal patterns. SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION Measurements of the infrazygomatic crest were performed on multislice computed tomography scans from 58 adults with different skeletal patterns. MATERIALS AND METHODS Infrazygomatic crest bone depth was measured at 4, 5 and 6 mm from the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) of the maxillary first molar at three different angles (60°, 70° and 80°) in the first molar occlusal plane. The sagittal and vertical skeletal patterns were determined. Analysis of variance followed by Tukey's post hoc test was used (P ≤ .05). RESULTS Bone depth was greater near the CEJ (8.7 ± 3.1 mm) and lower in the apical area (5.8 ± 2.7 mm). In Class II subjects, considering 6 mm from the CEJ, there was a significantly lower depth at the 80° angle (5.4 ± 2.5 mm) than at 60° (8.6 ± 3.5 mm; P = .007). In mesofacial subjects, considering 5 and 6 mm from the CEJ, bone depth was lower at 80° (5.7 ± 3.2 mm and 5.3 ± 2.5 mm) than at 60° considering 4 mm from the CEJ (P ≤ .019). CONCLUSION Bone availability was lower at the apical level, especially in Class II and mesofacial subjects. Therefore, when the planned insertion site is located in the apical direction, it is recommended to choose shorter miniscrews (2.0 x 12mm) and a smaller insertion angle (60°) and/or to plan a miniscrew bone insertion deep enough to allow bicortical fixation.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this meta-analysis was to assess the effect of rough threaded neck implants on marginal bone loss, compared to machined smooth neck implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS Literature searches were performed in the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (The Cochrane Library) (up to March 04, 2020), MEDLINE (PubMed) (1966 to March 04, 2020), and EMBASE (1980 to March 04, 2020), and reference lists of relevant manuscripts and relevant systematic reviews. Grey literature was sought using Grey Literature Net-Work Service (www.opengrey.eu) and The Grey Literature Report (www.greylit.org). Randomized controlled trials and controlled clinical trials that compared the effects of machined smooth neck implants versus rough threaded neck implants on marginal bone loss were included. Two review authors selected studies, assessed trial quality, and extracted data from included studies independently. The meta-analysis was carried out with Review Manager v5.3 software that compared marginal bone loss between rough threaded neck implants and machined smooth neck implants. RESULTS This review included 8 manuscripts (2 randomized controlled trials and 6 controlled clinical trials) from 6 clinical studies. The marginal bone loss around the rough threaded neck implants was significantly less than that around machined smooth neck ones (MD: -0.43 mm, 95% CI: -0.65 to -0.22 mm; p < 0.0001). In the subgroup with different platform connections, less marginal bone loss was observed around the rough threaded neck implants with platform switching (MD: -0.67 mm, 95% CI: -0.87 to -0.48 mm; p < 0.00001) or with regular platform (MD: -0.28 mm, 95% CI: -0.39 to -0.18 mm; p < 0.00001). The statistical analysis of the subgroups with functional loading for 3 or 6 months (MD: -0.39 mm; 95% CI: -0.61 to -0.18 mm; p = 0.0003) and 1 year or longer (MD: -0.43 mm, 95% CI: -0.65 to -0.22 mm; p < 0.0001) suggested that the rough threaded neck implants helped to reduce marginal bone loss. CONCLUSIONS The results of this review suggested that rough threaded neck implants may be helpful in maintaining the amount of marginal bone around implants. Larger sample size, longer follow-up periods and well-conducted randomized controlled trials are necessary to further prove the validity of the findings.

Abstract
Due to their rarity and the lack of associated dental symptoms, odontogenic cutaneous sinus tracts (OCSTs) are often misdiagnosed and confused with cutaneous lesions or non-odontogenic infections. It has been estimated that 50% of individuals affected by OCSTs are subjected to inappropriate treatments before the correct diagnosis is established. We describe the diagnosis and treatment of two cases of OCSTs. By using a computed tomography (CT) with soft tissue window setting, the extent of cortical bone destruction and the path of the sinus tract in the soft tissue was easily identified. Thus, we recommend the use of imaging techniques such as CT, which can confirm the odontogenic origin and the exact location of the OCST.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this systematic review is to assess whether the anatomy of mental foramen is precisely evaluable with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) before implantation in humans. Methods A systematic review was carried out to evaluate the anatomy of mental foramen (size, position, symmetry, anterior loop, and accessory mental foramen or multiple mental foramina). According to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, an electronic search of three databases (Medline, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library) was undertaken until June 2020 and was supplemented by manual searching. Two reviewers will independently perform the processes of study inclusion, data extraction, and quality assessment. Systematic reviews, studies about children, and case reports were excluded. Only studies using CBCT to do preoperative evaluation were selected. Results From 728 potentially eligible articles, 72 were included in the qualitative analysis and quantitative synthesis. This systematic review provided an assessment of the anatomy of the mental foramen. The mental foramen was located mostly between the two premolars (between 50.4% and 61.95%) or apically to the second premolar (from 50.3% to 57.9%). The mean diameter of the mental foramen was bigger in males than in females; the difference between them could reach 0.62 mm. The anterior loop seemed to be longer in males (between 0.87 ± 1.81 and 7.25 ± 2.02 mm) than in females (between 0.81 ± 1.18 and 6.52 ± 1.63 mm) and with the presence of teeth (from 0.91 ± 1.18 to 2.55 ± 1.28 for dentate people and from 0.25 ± 0.61 to 2.40 ± 0.88 mm for edentate population). The anterior loop and the accessory mental foramina were detected more frequently with CBCT than panoramic X-ray: only between 0.0 and 48.6% AMFs detected with CBCT were also seen with panoramic images. Clinical Significance. The mental foramen (MF) is an important landmark for local anesthesia and surgical and implantology procedures. Its location, morphology, and anatomical variations need to be considered to avoid mental nerve injury. The aim of this review is to evaluate the mental foramen using CBCT through a systematic literature review to improve knowledge of this complex area for the clinician.
