Abstract
Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) such as Hg, As, and Pb have become concentrated in the aquatic ecosystem as a result of increased human activities. However, these substances frequently have synergistic or antagonistic effects on the human body or other animals. As a result, there are concerns world-wide that commercially available food products, especially fish, may be contaminated with hazardous elements. In this study, samples of four selected fishes, Gutum (Lepidocephalichthys guntea), Baim (Macrognathus pancalus), Baila (Glossogobius giuris), Meni (Nandus nandus) were analyzed from one of the largest freshwater wetlands (designed as a Ramsar Site) in South Asia to evaluate PTEs contamination status and human health risk assessment. The result demonstrated that the degree of contamination for six PTEs decreased in the following sequences for fish: Fe > Zn > Cu > Pb > As > Hg. The edible part of G. giuris had the maximum value for Hg (0.42 μg/g dw), while N. nandus predominantly accumulated As (<0.41 μg/g dw). The estimated daily intake (EDI) values ranged from 0.003 to 1.75, which was much lower than the recommended values. The hazard index (HI), THQ, total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) scores through consuming fish followed the decreasing order of Fe > Hg > Cu > Zn > Pb. The values for each index were less than 1, indicating that there were no substantial health risks for the consumers. The carcinogenic risks (CR) derived from the intake of Pb ranged from 4.92 × 10-8 to 4.14 × 10-8 for males and 5.45 × 10-8 to 4.59 × 10-8 for females, which also did not exceed the standard limit (1.00 × 10-6). This study demonstrated that, under the existing consumption rate, there was no potential health harm to consumers from consuming the studied fishes. This study offers a chance to regularly check PTEs in this environment, reducing the contamination of heavy metals.

Abstract
Emerging studies have indicated that the consumption of rice could be the major methylmercury (MeHg) contributor to human mercury (Hg) exposure. Nonetheless, few studies are available on Hg in rice around the world, especially in countries with heavy rice diet. In this study, total Hg (THg) and MeHg levels in rice samples (n = 172) across Nepal were first investigated. The geometric mean THg was 7.05 ± 7.71 µg/kg with a range of 0.622 µg/kg to 158 µg/kg, and the maximum THg level was up to 791% of the Chinese National Standard Limit for THg in rice (20 µg/kg). The geometric mean MeHg was 0.820 ± 0.660 µg/kg with a range of 0.189 µg/kg to 8.59 µg/kg. Overall, the mean MeHg exposure (0.00445 ± 0.00477 µg/kg bw/day) and inorganic Hg (IHg) exposure (0.0360 ± 0.0739 µg/kg bw/day) were lower than the reference dose (RfD) of 0.1 µg/kg bw/day for MeHg and the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) of 0.571 µg/kg bw/day for IHg, respectively. Concerning different groups of vulnerable populations, the highest MeHg exposure (0.126 µg/kg bw/day) and IHg exposure (1.57 µg/kg bw/day) of preschoolers (37-50 months old) were approximately 126% of the RfD for MeHg and 275% of the PTWI for IHg. When the pregnant mothers eat the rice without awareness of the Hg content in rice, the mean and highest intelligence quotients (IQs) losses were 9554 and 118659 points, respectively, and the corresponding economic costs due to IQ loss could be 15.1 million USD and 188 million USD in Nepal. The results of rice THg and MeHg levels and corresponding exposure in populations highlighted the occurrence of rice THg and MeHg pollution issues in Nepal. More efforts should be made to protect younger groups in Nepal from high rice Hg exposure. CAPSULE: Owing to the high rice consumption rates relative to body mass, preschoolers (37-50 months) may meet the 126% reference dose (0.1 µg/kg bw/day) for MeHg and 275% provisional tolerable weekly intake (0.571 µg/kg bw/day) for IHg exposure in Nepal.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this work is to study mercury levels in the hair of different social and demographic groups of the population of the Vologda region in Northwest Russia. This region is selected due to a heterogeneous distribution of rivers and lakes-a resource base for fishing. METHODS The mercury content was determined in the hair from the root with a length of about 2 cm. The concentration of total mercury in human hair was determined by the atomic absorption method without preliminary sample preparation using an RA-915M mercury analyzer and a PYRO-915 + pyrolysis unit. RESULTS The average level of mercury in the human hair was 0.445 μg/g (median 0.220 μg/g). The concentration of mercury in the hair of people older than 44 years (0.875 μg/g) was three times higher than in the hair of children under 18 years of age (0.270 μg/g). People who eat fish less than once per month had a hair mercury concentration of 0.172 μg/g, for 1-2 times a month 0.409 μg/g, once a week 0.555 μg/g, and several times a week 0.995 μg/g. The concentration of mercury in the hair of smokers (0.514 μg/g) was higher than in the hair of non-smokers (0.426 μg/g). CONCLUSION Significantly higher concentrations of mercury were observed in the hair of participants from the western part of the region, where reservoirs are the main commercial sources of fish products. The data showed that the main source of people's mercury intake was fish.

Abstract
The main aim of this study was to assess the level of mercury accumulation in the hair of students studying in the Vologda Region, Russia. Particular attention is devoted to clarifying the relationship between the metal concentration in the hair and the amount of fish in the diet. It was found that the mercury content in the hair of Vologda Region residents aged 17–21 is in the range from less than 0.002 mg/kg to 1.69 mg/kg, the median of the indicator for the entire sample is 0.14 mg/kg. The median value of mercury content in the hair of males (0.12 mg/kg) is lower than in the hair of females (0.16 mg/kg). The lowest metal concentrations were observed in individuals living in the city of Cherepovets and the highest metal concentration among the entire sample and in females in the western areas, and males in the eastern areas of the Vologda Region. The concentration of metal in the hair of the urban population is lower than in subjects living in rural areas. A higher metal content in the hair was recorded in individuals whose diet usually contains fish twice a month.

Abstract
The offshore area of the South China Sea is an important fishing ground in China. We used a food frequency questionnaire to determine marine fish consumption by local residents, and we detected mercury concentrations in commonly consumed marine fish species. In total, 127.9 g/day of the marine fish consumed was identified in 178 local residents. THg and MeHg concentrations in 209 samples of 22 fish species ranged from 11.3 to 215.0 µg/kg wt and 2.0 to 160.0 µg/kg wt, respectively. The mean MeHg exposure from marine fish to local residents was 0.099 µg/kg bw, accounting for 43.0% of the provisional tolerated weekly intake (PTWI) (1.6 µg/kg bw/week), suggesting a low health risk. However, a potentially high health risk (202.2% of PTWI) was identified in those with 97.5% MeHg exposure.

Abstract
The health risks of mercury exposure due to the high consumption of aquatic were assessed for fishermen and non-fishermen families living on the Bandar Abbas, Bushehr, and Mahshahr cities located in the coast of Persian Gulf (Iran). The mean hair mercury concentration of people in Bandar Abbas, Bushehr, and Mahshahr cities was obtained 1.56 ± 0.17, 1.97 ± 0.22, and 5.12 ± 0.3 μg g-1, respectively. Hair mercury concentration in 8.8% of people exceeded the no observed adverse effects level (NOAEL) of 10 μg g-1 declared by the World Health Organization (WHO). The fish and shrimps consumption, place of living, and fisher and non-fisherman family were variables that significantly effected on mercury levels in the hair. The effect of other factors (age, sex, and number of dental amalgam fillings) on hair mercury was not significant. The mean concentrations of mercury in three fish species in Mahshahr exceeded the recommended maximum standard level (0.5 μg g-1) set by the Joint Food and Agriculture Organization/World Health Organization Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). The estimated weekly intake (EWI) for mercury in some fish species in Bandar Abbas, Bushehr, and Mahshahr was higher than the provisional tolerable weekly intake (1.6 μg kg-1 bw) set by European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for some groups. The significant positive correlation between daily mercury intake and hair mercury concentration of people (r = 0.64, P < 0.001) reasserts that the hair mercury concentration could be explained by fish consumption. HQ > 1 was obtained for women in child bearing age in fishermen families in Bandar Abbas and Bushehr cities, children in fishermen families in Bushehr, and for all groups of population except adult in non-fishermen families in Mahshahr. So, the limited consumption of some fish species for these groups of people is recommended. The maximum of allowable fish consumption rate was 0.70 meals/month for Pseudorhombus arsius from Mahshahr fish for women of child bearing age. Also, it is necessary to create and monitor and enforce environmental standards, preventing the entry of pollutants released into the marine aquatic environment without proper early treatment.

Abstract
This study quantified concentrations of mercury (Hg) and its trophic transfer along the fish community in the Indrawati River, Nepal. Stable isotope ratios of nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C), complemented by stomach contents data were used to assess the food web structure and trophic transfer of Hg in 54 fishes; 43 Shizothorax richardsonii and 11 Barilius spp. [B. bendelisis (1), B. vagra (3) and B. barila (7)]. Sixty-one muscle samples (including six replicates) were used for the analysis of total mercury (THg) and stable isotopes. Mean THg concentrations in B. spp. and the more common species S. richardsonii was observed to be 218.23 (ng/g, ww) and 90.82 (ng/g, ww), respectively. THg versus total length in both S. richardsonii and B. spp. showed a decreasing tendency with an increase in age. Regression of logTHg versus δ15N among the fish species showed a significant positive correlation only in S. richardsonii indicating biomagnification along the trophic level in this species.

Abstract
The paper's objective was to estimate weekly Hg intake from fish meals based on intervention research. Total Hg (THg) concentrations in blood and hair samples collected from men (n = 67) from an intervention study as well as muscular tissues of fresh and after heat-treating fish were determined using the thermal decomposition amalgamation atomic absorption spectrometry method (TDA-AAS) using direct mercury analyzer (DMA-80). The mean of the estimated weekly intake (EWI) was estimated at 0.62 μg/kg bw/week in the range 0.36-0.96 μg/kg body weight (bw) /week through the consumption of 4 edible marine fish species every day (for 10 days) by the participants from the intervention research in Lodz, Poland. The Hg intake in the volunteers in our intervention study accounted for 38.6% of the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) (1.6 μg/kg bw, weekly) value. The average Hg concentration in the analyzed fish ranged from 0.018 ± 0.006 mg/kg wet weight (Gadus chalcogrammus) to 0.105 ± 0.015 mg/kg wet weight (Macruronus magellanicus). The results for the average consumers were within PTWI of methylmercury (MeHg). Moreover, the average concentration of Hg in the selected fish after heat treatment did not exceed the maximum permitted concentrations for MeHg (MPCs = 0.5 mg/kg wet weight) in food set by the European Commission Regulation (EC/1881/2006). Hence, the risk of adverse effects of MeHg for the participants is substantially low.

Abstract
Mercury pollution and its impacts on human health is of global concern. The authors of this paper were members of the Plenary Panel on Human Health in the 12th International Conference on Mercury as a Global Pollutant held in Korea in June 2015. The Panel was asked by the conference organizers to address two questions: what is the current understanding of the impacts of mercury exposure on human health and what information is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Minamata Convention in lowering exposure and preventing adverse effects. The authors conducted a critical review of the literature published since January 2012 and discussed the current state-of-knowledge in the following areas: environmental exposure and/or risk assessment; kinetics and biomonitoring; effects on children development; effects on adult general populations; effects on artisanal and small-scale gold miners (ASGM); effects on dental workers; risk of ethylmercury in thimerosal-containing vaccines; interactions with nutrients; genetic determinants and; risk communication and management. Knowledge gaps in each area were identified and recommendations for future research were made. The Panel concluded that more knowledge synthesis efforts are needed to translate the research results into management tools for health professionals and policy makers.

Abstract
The aims of the present study were to obtain the seafood dietary patterns of coastal residents, to determine the concentrations of heavy metals, and to evaluate the possible health risks caused by seafood intake. The daily food intakes of 24 types of seafood were collected from 738 participants from Xiamen, a southern Chinese coastal city, using food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and dietary history method. One hundred and fifty-six samples of 14 types of highest intake seafood were collected from local markets for lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), and arsenic (As) determination. Health risks via seafood consumption were evaluated by calculating the target hazard quotient (THQ) and the total hazard index (HI) for carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects recommended by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The results showed that the seafood daily intake of Xiamen residents was 61.5 (2.14, 115) g/day. The concentrations of Pb, Cd, Cr, Hg, and As in seafood were ND-0.45 mg/kg, ND-0.19 mg/kg, ND-0.80 mg/kg, ND-0.70 mg/kg, and 0.32-16.9 mg/kg, respectively. Concentrations of Cd and As in some samples were higher than national limitation standards. Consumption of 14 common types of seafood would not pose non-carcinogenic risk. However, some types, such as sparuslatus, oyster, and porphyra tenera, would form a carcinogenic risk. Regardless of a carcinogenic or non-carcinogenic risk, As posed the highest risk on humans. The observed HI value for non-carcinogenic effect of all metals in all seafood reached 0.69-2.20, and the metal orders of risk can be listed as As > Hg > Cr > Cd > Pb, reiterating the risk of As is a matter of concern in seafood from Xiamen markets.
