Abstract
Groundwater is the main source of drinking water for the rural population in the chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) zone of the North Central Province (NCP) in Sri Lanka. In this study, a total of 334 groundwater samples (311 dug wells, 21 tube wells and 2 springs) during the wet season from two aquifers in the NCP were collected, and investigated their chemical characteristics and evaluate their water quality, including groundwater chemistry, main ion sources, the corrosion and scaling potential of groundwater. The results showed that the two hydrochemical types of groundwater in the NCP were mainly of the Ca-HCO3, Na·Ca-HCO3 types, with the main HCO3-, Na+ and Ca2+ ions in both types of groundwater originating from silicate and evaporite salt dissolution and influenced by alternating cation adsorption, while the presence of NO3- was mainly anthropogenic. Evaluation of water stability using namely Langelier saturation index (LSI), Ryznar stability index (RSI), Puckorius scaling index (PSI) and Larson-Skold index (LS), indicated that most groundwater presents corrosion potential and has corrosion behavior tendency of metals to some degrees. The water quality of Polonnaruwa was better than that of Anuradhapura in the NCP, and when the groundwater was worse than the "good" grade, which must be properly treated before it is used as drinking water.

Abstract
The inner walls of the drinking water distribution system (DWDS) are expected to be clean to ensure a safe quality of drinking water. Complex physical, chemical, and biological processes take place when water comes into contact with the pipe surface. This paper describes the impact of leaching different compounds from the water supply pipes into drinking water and subsequent risks. Among these compounds, there are heavy metals. It is necessary to prevent these metals from getting into the DWDS. Those compounds are susceptible to impacting the quality of the water delivered to the population either by leaching dangerous chemicals into water or by enhancing the development of microorganism growth on the pipe surface. The corrosion process of different pipe materials, scale formation mechanisms, and the impact of bacteria formed in corrosion layers are discussed. Water treatment processes and the pipe materials also affect the water composition. Pipe materials act differently in the flowing and stagnation conditions. Moreover, they age differently (e.g., metal-based pipes are subjected to corrosion while polymer-based pipes have a decreased mechanical resistance) and are susceptible to enhanced bacterial film formation. Water distribution pipes are a dynamic environment, therefore, the models that are used must consider the changes that occur over time. Mathematical modeling of the leaching process is complex and includes the description of corrosion development over time, correlated with a model for the biofilm formation and the disinfectants-corrosion products and disinfectants-biofilm interactions. The models used for these processes range from simple longitudinal dispersion models to Monte Carlo simulations and 3D modeling. This review helps to clarify what are the possible sources of compounds responsible for drinking water quality degradation. Additionally, it gives guidance on the measures that are needed to maintain stable and safe drinking water quality.

Abstract
Characterization of taste- and flavor-producing metals, namely iron and copper, in drinking water is a multifaceted subject. Both metals are essential nutrients, can be toxic, and are known to produce unpleasant tastes and flavor sensations in drinking water. Ingestion of trace metal contaminants through drinking water is a probable source of human exposure. Biochemical mechanisms of metallic flavor perception have been previously described; however, less is known about how variations in salivary constituents might impact individuals' sensitivities to metallic flavors and beverage consumption behaviors. This research presents findings from in vitro experiments, using artificial human saliva, to better understand the role of salivary lipids and proteins on metallic flavor production as measured by biomarkers of metal-induced oxidative stress. The results indicate that metal-induced lipid oxidation, as measured by thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), is dominated by salivary proteins, is slightly inhibited in the presence of salivary nitrite, and is detectable by the TBARS method at and above respective concentrations of 9 µM (0.5 mg/L) and 90 µM (5 mg/L), which are both above the aesthetic standards for iron (0.3 mg/L) and copper (1.0 mg/L) in drinking water. Preliminary study with human subjects indicated that reduction in metallic flavor sensitivity, as measured by the best estimate flavor threshold for ferrous iron among 33 healthy adults aged 19-84 years old (22 females), corresponded with reduced drinking water consumption and increased caloric beverage intake among older subjects (>60 years), as determined by a validated self-reported beverage intake questionnaire. These findings provide insights for further research to examine how salivary constituents can impact humans' sensory abilities in detecting metallic off-flavors in water, and how reduced metallic flavor sensitivity may influence beverage choices and drinking water consumption.

Abstract
Chromium accumulated from source water and pipeline lining materials in corrosion scales could potentially be released into bulk water in drinking water distribution systems (DWDS). This study examined the influence of pH (pH 4, pH 5.5, pH 7, pH 8.5, pH 10), temperature (5 °C, 15 °C, 25 °C), sulfate (50 mg/L, 150 mg/L, 250 mg/L), and chloride (50 mg/L, 150 mg/L, 250 mg/L) on chromium accumulation and release between iron corrosion scale phase and the surrounding water phase. For the first time, the accumulation and release behaviors of chromium were assessed and compared in two distinct layers of iron corrosion scales based on the speciation distributions of heavy metals. Results showed that in the outer and inner layers of corrosion scales, chromium exhibited an almost similar trend but significant differences in quantity, with the outer layer accumulating less and releasing more. In particular, the average difference of chromium released after Cr(VI) enrichment from the outer and inner layers was 50.53 μg/L under the same conditions. Further studies conclusively showed that in Cr(VI) accumulation process, a portion of Cr(VI) would be reduced to Cr(III) by Fe(II) in iron corrosion scales. The mechanisms of chromium retention based on different iron (oxyhydr)oxides were discussed.

Abstract
As businesses, specifically technology developers and industrial suppliers, strive to meet growing demand for higher quality drinking water, the use of engineered nanomaterials in commercial point-of-use (POU) in-home water purification devices are becoming an increasingly important option. Anecdotally, some businesses appear wary of developing and marketing nanomaterial-enabled devices because of concerns that they will face onerous regulation and consumer pushback. However, little of substance is known about business perceptions of and attitudes toward the use of engineered nanomaterials in POU water purification devices, or how these compare with consumer perceptions. To address this knowledge-gap, we administered a 14-question survey among 65 participants from US-based industrial companies focused on drinking water purification. Our results indicate that the dominant concerns for businesses are costs and public perceptions associated with nanomaterial-enabled POU devices for drinking water purification. Cost-specific barriers include competition from more conventional technologies, and tensions between operational versus capital costs. 57% of respondents were concerned or very concerned that public perceptions will influence the long-term viability of nanomaterial-enabled POU devices for drinking water purification. 49% of respondents stated that government regulation of nanomaterials would be the preferred approach to ensure public safety, followed by the certification of POU devices (28%). When asked about specific nanomaterials and their potential use in POU devices for drinking water purification, respondents ranked carbon nanotubes as the nanomaterial with highest concern for environmental health and safety, followed by silver, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and copper. Respondents ranked nanoclays as the nanomaterial with highest likelihood for public acceptance, followed by silica, cerium oxide, titanium dioxide, and aluminum oxide.
