Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies exploring the relationship between serum uric acid (sUA) and cardiovascular risk in the Nigerian population remain sparse. The study aimed to assess the association between sUA levels and two measures of cardiovascular risk, namely the Framingham 10-year Cardiovascular Risk Score (FRS) and the Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP). METHODS This retrospective study used data from clinical records of new, previously unregistered patients presenting at a private cardiac hospital over one year from November 2022 to October 2023. In total, 428 patients presented newly to the hospital in that period. The records of 138 patients were included in the project after various exclusions were made including for incomplete anthropometric and laboratory data. Statistical tests of association were used to determine the significance of the relationship between sUA levels and the measures of cardiovascular risk. Two-tailed p <0.05 was deemed statistically significant. RESULTS Hyperuricemia was more prevalent in individuals with central obesity, i.e., waist circumference ≥94cm in males or 80cm in females (93.4% vs 6.6%; p=0.03). Serum uric acid also positively correlated with FRS (correlation coefficient: 0.190; p<0.05) and serum triglyceride levels and AIP (correlation coefficient: 0.259 and 0.294, respectively; p<0.001 for both). After multivariate analyses, uric acid was significantly and independently associated with high FRS and AIP after adjusting for age, smoking and diabetes history, blood pressure, total and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, serum triglycerides and waist circumference (p<0.001). CONCLUSION The results emphasize the emergence of sUA as a pertinent cardiovascular risk factor in clinical settings. More research is needed to deduce the relationship, if any, between cardiovascular risk reduction and pharmacological reduction of sUA levels.

Abstract
Xanthine oxidase inhibitors, including allopurinol and febuxostat, are the first-line treatment of hyperuricemia. This meta-analysis investigated the association between urate-lowering therapy and all-cause mortality in different chronic diseases to match its users and non-users in a real-world setting. Overall, 11 studies were included, which reported adjusted hazard ratios for all-cause mortality over at least 12 months. Meta-analysis of all included studies showed no effect of the therapy on all-cause mortality. However, subgroup analyses showed its beneficial effect in patients with chronic kidney disease (14% risk reduction) and hyperuricemia (14% risk reduction), but not in patients with heart failure (28% risk increase). Urate-lowering therapy reduces all-cause mortality among patients with hyperuricemia and chronic kidney disease, but it seems to increase mortality in patients with heart failure and should be avoided in this subgroup.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to analysis the clinical characteristics and prognosis of acute STEMI in patients aged ≤ 45 years. METHODS Seven hundred and one patients with STEMI from Liaocheng People's Hospital from January 2018 to March 2021 were included in this study. Clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes (average follow-up: 11.5 months) were compared between patients aged ≤ 45 years and those aged > 45 years. RESULTS Of the patients with STEMI who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention, 108 (15.4%) were aged ≤ 45 years. Compared to the older group, the younger patient group included more males, current smokers, and those with alcohol use disorder (AUD) or a family history of ischaemic heart disease (IHD). The culprit vessel in young patients was the left anterior descending (LAD) artery (60% vs. 45.9%, P = 0.031), which may have been due to smoking (odds ratio, 3.5; 95% confidence interval: 1.12-10.98, P = 0.042). Additionally, young patients presented with higher low-density lipoprotein and lower high-density lipoprotein levels than older patients; uric acid levels were also significantly higher in younger patients than that in the older group. Diabetes showed a trend toward major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in both groups; age and sex were both independent predictors of MACE in older patients. CONCLUSION More patients who were smokers, had AUD, or a family history of IHD were present in the young patient group. Hyperuricaemia (but not dyslipidaemia) was a prevalent risk factor in patients aged ≤ 45 years. Diabetes should be controlled to reduce cardiovascular events in young patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The objective of this study was to explore the association between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and cardiovascular risk factors in the Indian population. METHODS AND RESULTS This was a cross-sectional, population-based study. The study enrolled adults aged 20 years and above residing in rural, sub-urban, and urban. All participants completed a detailed questionnaire, underwent anthropometric measurements, and had blood samples collected. Participants were divided into three tertiles based on their SUA concentrations. A total of 2976 participants were included in this study, with 865 from rural, 1030 from sub-urban, and 1081 from urban populations. The mean values of cardiovascular risk factors were significantly higher in tertile 3 (p < 0.001) as compared to the other tertiles. However, we observed a negative trend between the increase of SUA and SUA/Scr ratio and HbA1c levels (Pearson correlation r = -0.068; p < 0.001 and r = -0.140; p < 0.001, respectively). The healthy and prediabetic groups did not show any significant change in HbA1c with increasing SUA levels, while an inverse trend was observed in diabetics. In the diabetic population, both men and women showed an inverse trend between increasing SUA levels and HbA1c in both known and newly diagnosed diabetes (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The study found a positive association between SUA levels and cardiovascular risk factors. However, HbA1c was inversely correlated with increasing SUA tertiles in both known and newly diagnosed diabetes, as compared to the general population. Additionally, both men and women with diabetes consistently showed an inverse relationship between increasing SUA/SCr ratio and HbA1c levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Serum uric acid (SUA) is involved in the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, information on the dose-response relationship between SUA and CVD is limited in the Chinese population. This study aimed to investigate the potential nonlinear dose-response association of SUA with CVD risk in a Chinese population and to explore the effect of sex on these associations. METHODS AND RESULTS Cross-sectional data, from 6252 Chinese adults aged 30-74 years who participated in the China Health and Nutrition Survey 2009, were stratified by SUA deciles. The 10-year risk of CVD was determined using the Framingham risk score. A restricted cubic spline (RCS) was incorporated into the logistic models to assess the nonlinear relationship between SUA and CVD. Among the participants, 65%, 20%, and 15% had low, moderate, and high 10-year CVD risks, respectively. Compared with the reference SUA strata of 225 to <249 μmol/L, CVD risk was significantly increased at SUA ≥294 μmol/L, with adjusted ORs ranging from 2.39 (1.33-4.33) to 4.25 (2.37-7.65). An increasingly higher nonsignificant CVD risk was found at SUA <225 μmol/L and showed a nonlinear U-shaped association. In the fitted RCS model, an approximate U-shaped association between SUA and CVD risk scores was found in women, but this significant nonlinear relationship was not found in men. CONCLUSION This study showed that both lower and higher SUA levels were associated with a higher 10-year CVD risk among Chinese adults, forming a U-shaped relationship, and this pattern was particularly pronounced for women.

Abstract
Uric acid (UA) forms monosodium urate (MSU) crystals to exert proinflammatory actions, thus causing gout arthritis, urolithiasis, kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease. UA is also one of the most potent antioxidants that suppresses oxidative stress. Hyper andhypouricemia are caused by genetic mutations or polymorphism. Hyperuricemia increases urinary UA concentration and is frequently associated with urolithiasis, which is augmented by low urinary pH. Renal hypouricemia (RHU) is associated with renal stones by increased level of urinary UA, which correlates with the impaired tubular reabsorption of UA. Hyperuricemia causes gout nephropathy, characterized by renal interstitium and tubular damage because MSU precipitates in the tubules. RHU is also frequently associated with tubular damage with elevated urinary beta2-microglobulin due to increased urinary UA concentration, which is related to impaired tubular UA reabsorption through URAT1. Hyperuricemia could induce renal arteriopathy and reduce renal blood flow, while increasing urinary albumin excretion, which is correlated with plasma xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) activity. RHU is associated with exercise-induced kidney injury, since low levels of SUA could induce the vasoconstriction of the kidney and the enhanced urinary UA excretion could form intratubular precipitation. A U-shaped association of SUA with organ damage is observed in patients with kidney diseases related to impaired endothelial function. Under hyperuricemia, intracellular UA, MSU crystals, and XOR could reduce NO and activate several proinflammatory signals, impairing endothelial functions. Under hypouricemia, the genetic and pharmacological depletion of UA could impair the NO-dependent and independent endothelial functions, suggesting that RHU and secondary hypouricemia might be a risk factor for the loss of kidney functions. In order to protect kidney functions in hyperuricemic patients, the use of urate lowering agents could be recommended to target SUA below 6 mg/dL. In order to protect the kidney functions in RHU patients, hydration and urinary alkalization may be recommended, and in some cases an XOR inhibitor might be recommended in order to reduce oxidative stress.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Correlation influence factor analysis of gout patients' serum uric acid (SUA) levels, their examination fees, and various complications were explored. METHODS From January 2017 to December 2021, 17 666 patients with gout were obtained. Conduct quartile grouping according to gout patients' SUA levels was used to compare the differences between groups in terms of examination fees and complications. Kernel density estimation method was adopted to analyze the data distribution, Spearman and Mantel-Haenszel χ2 tests were used to analyze the correlation between SUA levels and examination fees and complications. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the correlation influence factor between SUA levels and complications. RESULTS Of the 17 666 gout cases, 85.46% were male. Among them, 7637 (43.23%) were inpatients and 10 029 (56.77%) were outpatients. Compared with outpatients, age, SUA levels, and examination fees were significantly higher, and there were more complications among inpatients (P < 0.05). Correlation analysis revealed that outpatients and SUA levels of patients with gout were positively correlated with examination fees, cardiovascular diseases, pulmonary diseases, liver diseases, and kidney diseases (P < 0.01). Binary logistic regression analysis showed that SUA level is an independent influence factor for cardiovascular diseases, pulmonary diseases, liver diseases, and kidney diseases (odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 1.002 [1.002-1.002], 1.001 [1.000-1.001], 1.003 [1.002-1.003], and 1.001 [1.001-1.002], respectively). CONCLUSIONS As SUA levels increased, examination fees, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, liver disease, and kidney disease complications increased. SUA level is an independent influence factor for the combination of gout with cardiovascular diseases, pulmonary diseases, liver diseases, and kidney diseases.

Abstract
Background Gout or rapid reduction in serum uric acid level may increase the incidence of heart failure (HF). To compare the risk of HF between febuxostat and allopurinol in gout patients with coexisting cardiovascular (CV) diseases, the varying severity would be likely to confound the risk estimation. Gout and HF are both sex-related diseases, and the risk difference from the urate-lowering agents between women and men remains unknown. Aims To evaluate the HF hospitalisations risk of febuxostat and allopurinol in gout patients in real-world settings. Methods A population-based cohort enrolled patients with allopurinol or febuxostat initiation from 2011 to 2018. Participants were grouped into, without (low CV risk group) or with (high CV risk group) a history of recent major CV admission. The primary outcome was HF hospitalization. The secondary outcomes were composite CV events, all-cause mortality, and the cause of CV mortality. We used the ‘as-treated' analysis and Cox proportional hazards model after propensity score (PS) matching. Patients were further stratified into men and women to evaluate the gender differences. Results Febuxostat users had a significantly higher risk of HF hospitalization than allopurinol users in gout patients either with low CV risk [hazard ratio (HR) 1.39; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.25–1.55] or high CV risk [HR 1.36; 95% CI 1.22–1.52]. Particularly, women with gout had a higher risk of HF hospitalization than men. Conclusion The HF hospitalization risk was highest in gout women with high CV risk and febuxostat use. Monitoring of HF is warranted in these patients.

Abstract
Uric acid (UA) is the final metabolite in purine catabolism in humans. Previous studies have shown that the dysregulation of UA homeostasis is detrimental to cardiovascular and kidney health. The Xdh gene encodes for the Xanthine Oxidoreductase enzyme group, responsible for producing UA. To explore how hypouricemia can lead to kidney damage, we created a rat model with the genetic ablation of the Xdh gene on the Dahl salt-sensitive rat background (SSXdh−/−). SSXdh−/− rats lacked UA and exhibited impairment in growth and survival. This model showed severe kidney injury with increased interstitial fibrosis, glomerular damage, crystal formation, and an inability to control electrolyte balance. Using a multi-omics approach, we highlighted that lack of Xdh leads to increased oxidative stress, renal cell proliferation, and inflammation. Our data reveal that the absence of Xdh leads to kidney damage and functional decline by the accumulation of purine metabolites in the kidney and increased oxidative stress. Abstract
Background Current studies support lipid ratios [the total cholesterol (TC)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio; the triglyceride (TG)/HDL-C ratio; the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL -C)/HDL-C ratio; and non-HDL-C] as reliable indicators of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and diabetes. However, whether lipid ratios could serve as markers for hyperuricemia (HUA) remains unclear due to limited research. This study aimed to explore the association between lipid ratios and HUA in hypertensive patients. Methods The data from 14,227 Chinese hypertensive individuals in the study were analyzed. Multiple logistic regression analysis and smooth curve fitting models examined the relationship between lipid ratios and HUA. Results The results showed positive associations between the lipid ratios and HUA (all P < 0.001). Furthermore, lipid ratios were converted from continuous variables to tertiles. Compared to the lowest tertile, the fully adjusted ORs (95 % CI) of the TC/HDL-C ratio, the TG/HDL-C ratio, the LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, and non-HDL-C in the highest tertile were 1.79 (1.62, 1.99), 2.09 (1.88, 2.32), 1.67 (1.51, 1.86), and 1.93 (1.74, 2.13), respectively (all P < 0.001). Conclusions The study suggested that high lipid ratios (TC/HDL-C ratio, TG/HDL-C ratio, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, and non-HDL-C) are associated with HUA in a Chinese hypertensive population. This study’s findings further expand the scope of the application of lipid ratios. These novel and essential results suggest that lipid ratio profiles might be potential and valuable markers for HUA. Abstract
Background This cohort study created a risk equation of CVD for the Uyghur and Kazakh ethnic groups with metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Xinjiang and its associated factors, evaluated the model’s feasibility, and provided theoretical support for the prevention and early diagnosis of CVD. Methods A total of 5655 participants from Xinyuan and Jiashi counties in Xinjiang from 2010 to 2012 were selected, including 3770 and 1885 training and validation samples, respectively. A factor analysis was performed on 975 patients with MetS in the training sample, whereas potential factors related to CVD were extracted from 21 MetS biomarkers. Cox regression was used to create and verify a CVD-risk prediction model based on training samples. The receiver operating characteristic curve was drawn to evaluate the model’s prediction efficiency. Results The cumulative incidence of CVD was 9.20% (training sample, 9.12%; validation sample, 9.36%). Nine potential factors were extracted from the training sample population with MetS to predict the CVD risk: lipid (hazard ratio [HR], 1.205), obesity (HR, 1.047), liver function (HR, 1.042), myocardial enzyme (HR, 1.008), protein (HR, 1.024), blood pressure (HR, 1.027), liver enzyme (HR, 1.012), renal metabolic (HR, 1.015), and blood glucose (HR, 1.010). The area under the curve of the training and validation samples was 0.841 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.821–0.861) and 0.889 (95% CI, 0.870–0.909), respectively. Conclusion The CVD prediction model created with nine potential factors in patients with MetS in Kazakh and Uyghur has a good predictive power.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to establish and internally verify the risk nomogram of postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with renal cell carcinoma. METHODS We retrospectively collected data from 559 patients with renal cell carcinoma from June 2016 to May 2019 and established a prediction model. Twenty-six clinical variables were examined by least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression analysis, and variables related to postoperative AKI were determined. The prediction model was established by multiple logistic regression analysis. Decision curve analysis was conducted to evaluate the nomogram. RESULTS Independent predictors of postoperative AKI were smoking, hypertension, surgical time, blood glucose, blood uric acid, alanine aminotransferase, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and radical nephrectomy. The C index of the nomogram was 0.825 (0.790-0.860) and 0.814 was still obtained in the internal validation. The nomogram had better clinical benefit when the intervention was decided at the threshold probabilities of >4% and <79% for patients and doctors, respectively. CONCLUSIONS This novel postoperative AKI nomogram incorporating smoking, hypertension, the surgical time, blood glucose, blood uric acid, alanine aminotransferase, the estimated glomerular filtration rate, and radical nephrectomy is convenient for facilitating the individual postoperative risk prediction of AKI in patients with renal cell carcinoma.

Abstract
PURPOSE A significant shift in meal pattern with frequent eating out was closely associated with multiple chronic outcomes, but with limited evidence on hyperuricemia. We aimed to explore the associations between eating out and serum uric acid (SUA) as well as hyperuricemia. METHODS A total of 29,597 participants were recruited from the Henan Rural Cohort Study. A validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to collect dietary data, including the frequency of eating out. Linear regression models were used to examine the association of eating-out frequency with SUA and BMI. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline were performed to assess the association and dose-response relationship between eating-out frequency and hyperuricemia. The mediation effect of BMI between eating out and the risk of hyperuricemia was evaluated. RESULTS Eating out was significantly associated with higher SUA levels in the total population and males (P < 0.001). Multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence interval (CIs) of hyperuricemia were 1.26 (1.09, 1.46) for the total population and 1.18 (1.00, 1.40) for males (≥ 7 times/week vs 0 time/week). A non-linear positive dose-response relationship between eating-out frequency and hyperuricemia was observed. Furthermore, BMI played a partial mediating role in the relationship between eating out frequency and hyperuricemia, which explained 30.7% in the total population and 44.8% in males. CONCLUSION Our findings indicated that eating out was associated with increased SUA levels and elevated hyperuricemia risk in rural China, especially in males. Factors Influencing the Serum Uric Acid in Gout with Cerebral Infarction. Mediators Inflamm 2021; 2021:5523490. Abstract
Background Although the relationship between gout and cardiovascular has been well demonstrated, there is little information about the difference between gout with cerebrovascular disease and cardiovascular disease. In this study, the differences between gout with cerebral infarction (gout+CI) and gout with coronary heart disease (gout+CHD) and related factors that affect serum uric acid (sUA) levels in gout+CI were investigated by a cross-sectional study. Method The patients from Jiangxi Provincial People's Hospital with gout+CHD, gout+CI, and gout with coronary heart disease and cerebral infarction (gout+CHD+CI) between 2016 and 2020 were included in this study, and the medical record data were collected and analyzed. Results We observed significant differences in age, drinking, hypertension, long-term use of diuretics and NSAIDs, sUA, CRE, and blood glucose in patients with gout+CHD and gout+CI. The sUA level was significantly positively correlated with smoking, CRE, and TG in the gout+CI group and was only positively correlated with CRE in the gout+CHD group and the gout+CHD+CI group (p < 0.05). Interestingly, the sUA level was only negatively correlated with the age and gender in the gout+CI group (p < 0.05). After excluding factors with no significant statistical effect, only age, gender, smoking, CRE, and TG were included in the multiple linear regression model. It suggested that smoking, CRE, and TG are positively correlated with the sUA level, while age was negatively correlated with the sUA level. Conclusions There are many discrepancies in clinical characteristics between gout+CHD patients and gout+CI patients, especially that the factors that affect UA levels are significantly different. The data also suggested that uric acid-lowering therapy may need to be strengthened in the young gout+CI patients with a history of smoking.

Abstract
Background Waist circumference (WC) and uric acid (UA) are significantly related. Still, their temporal sequence and how the sequence works on future risk of triglyceride glucose (TyG) are unknown, especially in the Chinese population. Methods Cross-lagged panel model was used to analyze the reciprocal, longitudinal relationships among a set of interrelated variables. The mediation model was constructed to test the effect of the relationship between WC and UA on TyG. Results A total of 5727 subjects were enrolled in our study population, of which 53.5% were women, and the mean age was 59.0 (standard deviation, 8.62) years. After adjusting for traditional confounding factors, the results showed that a higher level of baseline WC was significantly associated with a higher level of follow-up UA (β = 0.003, P = 0.031) and follow-up TyG (β = 0.003, P < 0.001);. Simultaneously, there was no statistical association between the level of baseline UA and the level of follow-up WC (β = − 0.009, P = 0.951). The mediation effects of UA on WC-TyG were estimated to be 18.1% in adults, and 36.2% in women. Conclusions The current study demonstrated that higher baseline level of WC probably preceded UA’ level in general population. In addition, UA mediated the relationship of WC to TyG, especially in females. And the possible mechanism would require further clarification.

Background Elevated triglyceride (TG) levels are a biomarker for cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. The correlation between serum uric acid (SUA) and TG concentrations in adults or obese children is well established. However, studies on SUA and TG in children with short stature are limited. Aim To determine the relationship between SUA and TG levels in short children and adolescents. Method This was a cross-sectional evaluation of a cohort of 1095 patients with short stature (720 males and 375 females). The related clinical characteristics, including anthropometric and biochemical parameters, were determined. Results Smooth curve fitting, adjusted for potential confounders was performed, which indicated the existence of a non-linear relationship between these measures. Piecewise multivariate linear analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between SUA and TG at SUA concentrations over 7 mg/dL (β = 0.13, 95% CI: 0.05–0.22, P = 0.002) but no significant correlation at lower SUA levels (β = 0.01, 95% CI: 0.01–0.04, P = 0.799). Furthermore, a stratified analysis was performed to appraise changes in this relationship for different sexes and standard deviation levels of body mass index (BMI). The non-linear relationship remained consistent in males and females with BMI standard deviation scores (BMI SDS) ≥ 0, with inflection points of 6.71 mg/dL and 3.93 mg/dL, respectively. Within these two groups, SUA and TG levels showed a positive association when SUA levels were higher than the inflection point (β = 0.21, 95% CI: 0.11–0.31, P < 0.001 for males and β = 0.1, 95% CI: 0.03–0.17, P = 0.005 for females). However, a specific relationship was not observed at lower SUA levels. No significant relationships were found between SUA and TG levels in males and females with BMI SDS < 0. Conclusion The present study identified the non-linear association of SUA and TG levels with short children and adolescents. This relationship was based on BMI status. This finding suggests that health status should be considered for short stature children with high SUA levels, especially in children with a high BMI standard deviation score. Abstract
The association between hyperuricemia and cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been reported and studied in the past two decades. Xanthine oxidase (XO) induced uric acid (UA) serves as a risk factor and has the independent prognostic and functional impact of heart failure (HF), but whether it plays a positive role in the pathogenesis of HF has remained unclear. Growing evidence suggest the up-regulated XO avtivity and increased production of free oxygen radical (ROS) correspondingly are the core pathogenesis of HF with hyperuricemia, which results in a whole cluster of pathophysiologic cardiovascular effects such as oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, vascular inflammation, left ventricular (LV) dysfunction as well as insulin resistance (IR). The use of XO inhibition represents a promising therapeutic choice in patients with HF due to its dual effect of lowering serum UA levels as well as reducing ROS production. This review will discuss the pathophysiologic mechanisms of hyperuricemia with HF, the targeted therapeutic interventions of UA lowering therapies (ULT) with XO inhibition and mechanism underlying beneficial effects of ULT. In addition, the review also summarizes current evidence on the role of ULT in HF and compares CV risk between allopurinol and febuxostat for practical and clinical purposes. Guidelines and implementation of CV risk management in daily practice will be discussed as well.

Abstract
Objective: Metabolic and other medical conditions are frequently comorbid with schizophrenia. As they might be the side-effects of antipsychotic treatment, studying first-episode drug-naïve schizophrenia (FDSZ) provides a unique opportunity to investigate a direct pathogenic link between metabolic changes and schizophrenia. Here, we presented the methods and baseline unique metabolic profile of FDSZ patients without medical comorbidities unveiling subthreshold indices of metabolic disturbances. Method: Drug-naïve individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia but without any previous medical conditions were invited to participate in the study. Participants were submitted to structured psychiatric and cognitive assessments, laboratory and neuroimaging tests. Subjects will be followed after antipsychotic treatment at 6, 24 and 48 weeks. Results: During an 8-month-period, out of 103 patients presenting with first episode psychosis, 67 subjects (43.3% men, 56.7% women) were enrolled in the study. They had a mean ± SD age of 32.1 ± 8.7 years, with a mean BMI of 21.1 kg/m2 and 11.3 ± 3.6 years of schooling. Less than 1/3 reported a family history of mental illness. Upon laboratory assessment, 10.4%, 7.5%, and 11.9% of patients were identified with hyperhomocysteinemia, hypertriglyceridemia and hyperprolactinemia, respectively, with percentages of women relatively higher than men except for hypertriglyceridemia. Conclusions: First episode schizophrenia patients, especially women, present subclinical metabolic abnormalities, independent of antipsychotic treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE The relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) and Chinese characteristic 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk score has not been well evaluated in Chinese populations. Aims of this cross-sectional study were to describe the correlation between SUA level and clustering of prevalent cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) including overweight, central obesity, hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia, as well as the Chinese 10-year ASCVD risk score in adults from Jiangsu Province located in Eastern China. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 7700 adults from 12 cities in Jiangsu Province were selected through multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling method in 2015. Face-to-face interviews, physical examinations and laboratory examinations were carried out to collect the information of the participants. Multivariate logistic analysis was used to analyze the relationship between SUA quartiles and various CVD risk factors. The nonlinear analysis was conducted to evaluate the relationship between SUA levels and the China-PAR 10-year ASCVD risk scores. RESULTS The prevalence of hyperuricemia was 13.3% in all of the participants. By adjusting potential confounders, significant correlations were found between the SUA level and the overweight, central obesity, hypertension and dyslipidemia in both males and females. The clustering of CRFs was different across SUA quantiles (χ 2=607.685, P<0.001). After Gamma trend test (P < 0.001) and ordered logistic regression analysis, it was found out that with the increase of SUA quantiles, prevalent CRFs gradually gathered in both males and females. Furthermore, sex-specific difference was identified between SUA and 10-year ASCVD risk scores. CONCLUSION The accumulation of CRFs increased with elevated SUA levels, whereas it was different between genders in the relationship between SUA and 10-year ASCVD risk scores. Tailored strategies should be taken when it came to males and females in managing SUA.

Abstract
Recently, research has redirected its interests in uric acid (UA) from gout, an inflammatory disease in joints, to groups of closely interrelated pathologies associated with cardiovascular and kidney dysfunction. Many epidemiological, clinical, and experimental studies have shown that UA may play a role in the pathophysiology of the cardiorenal syndrome continuum; however, it is still unclear if it is a risk factor or a causal role. Hyperuricemia has been well studied in the past two decades, revealing mechanistic insights into UA homeostasis. Likewise, some epidemiological and experimental evidence suggests that hypouricemia can lead to cardiorenal pathologies. The goal of this review is to highlight why studying both hyperuricemia and hypouricemia is warranted as well as to summarize the relevance of UA to kidney function.
