Abstract
Concept mapping is a phased, mixed-method approach that is increasingly used in health research to develop an understanding of complex phenomena. The six phases of concept mapping are preparation, idea generation, structuring (clustering and prioritization), data analysis, interpretation, and utilization of the map. The reporting of concept mapping research requires the development of a specific reporting guideline. We conducted a systematic review to identify candidate reporting items for inclusion in a reporting guideline. Three databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, and PsycInfo) were searched to identify studies that used concept mapping methodology. We included 75 concept mapping studies published since 2019 from which we extracted information about the quality of reporting. A third of the studies focused on public health. We identified 71 candidate items that relate to the quality of reporting concept mapping research. The rationale for the study, the focus prompt, procedures for brainstorming, and structuring statements were consistently reported across the included studies. The process for developing the focus prompt, the rationale for the size of the stakeholder groups, and the process for determining the final concept map were generally not reported. The findings from the review will be used to inform the development of our reporting guideline for concept mapping research.

Abstract
Background To design a comprehensive approach to promote children's sleep health in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, we combined Intervention Mapping (IM) with the Health in All Policies (HiAP) perspective. We aimed to create an approach that fits local infrastructures and policy domains across sectors. Methods First, a needs assessment was conducted, including a systematic review, two concept mapping studies, and one cross-sectional sleep diary study (IM step 1). Subsequently, semi-structured interviews with stakeholders from policy, practice and science provided information on potential assets from all relevant social policy sectors to take into account in the program design (HiAP and IM step 1). Next, program outcomes and objectives were specified (IM step 2), with specific objectives for policy stakeholders (HiAP). This was followed by the program design (IM step 3), where potential program actions were adapted to local policy sectors and stakeholders (HiAP). Lastly, program production (IM step 4) focused on creating a multi-sector program (HiAP). An advisory panel guided the research team by providing tailored advice during all steps throughout the project. Results A blueprint was created for program development to promote children's sleep health, including a logic model of the problem, a logic model of change, an overview of the existing organizational structure of local policy and practice assets, and an overview of policy sectors, and related objectives and opportunities for promoting children's sleep health across these policy sectors. Furthermore, the program production resulted in a policy brief for the local government. Conclusions Combining IM and HiAP proved valuable for designing a blueprint for the development of an integrated multi-sector program to promote children's sleep health. Health promotion professionals focusing on other (health) behaviors can use the blueprint to develop health promotion programs that fit the local public service infrastructures, culture, and incorporate relevant policy sectors outside the public health domain.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to explore potential factors of inadequate sleep health (i.e. sleep duration, quality, and timing) of school-aged children. Data were collected among 382 primary school children (aged 4-13 years) and their parents. Personal characteristics (i.e. age, sex), individual lifestyle behaviours (i.e. screen use, sleep hygiene behaviour), social and community factors (i.e. parental sleep-related practices, parental barriers, perceived ethnicity), and living conditions (i.e. parental educational level, sleep environment) were assessed with a parental questionnaire. Sleep duration, quality, and timing were assessed with a sleep diary. Associations were analysed using linear mixed models and logistic regression analyses. In total, 332 children, with a mean (range) age of 7.5 (4-13) years, were included in the analyses. The mean sleep duration was 632 min/night, the mean sleep quality score was 40, on a scale from 10 to 50, and 25% had a bedtime that varied >40 min between weekdays. Factors negatively associated with children's sleep health included older age, perceived non-Dutch cultural background, lower parental pre-sleep emotional support, the parental barrier to get their child to bed on time when siblings have a later bedtime, high parental educational level, sleeping in a darkened bedroom, and being brought to bed after falling asleep. On average, children in the present study had adequate sleep health. The factors found to be associated with children's sleep health are useful for future healthy sleep research and intervention development.

Abstract
Understanding salient environmental determinants of pediatric sleep is essential for informing interventions and public health initiatives. Emerging evidence suggests that the neighborhood environment can impact pediatric sleep, but this evidence has not yet been systematically reviewed. We conducted a systematic review of the scientific literature on associations between neighborhood environments and sleep in young children (0-5 y), school-aged children (6-12 y) and adolescents (13-18 y). We reviewed 85 articles published between 2003 and 2020. The most commonly examined neighborhood exposure was low socioeconomic status (40 studies), which was associated with sleep outcomes in 58% of studies (primarily shorter sleep duration, later sleep timing, or obstructive sleep apnea). Evidence was stronger for neighborhood safety/crime/violence (21 studies), with 86% of studies reporting associations with sleep outcomes (primarily self- or caregiver-reported sleep problems). Fewer studies examined associations of neighborhood physical environment exposures, including noise (15 studies), the built environment (seven studies), and air pollution (six studies). Limitations of the current body of evidence include 1) limited examination of neighborhood exposures other than socioeconomic status or safety, 2) use of primarily cross-sectional observational study designs, 3) lack of objective sleep outcome assessment, and 4) limits of current exposure assessment methods.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVE Parents tend to under-report symptoms suggestive of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) at medical consultation. It is thought that a contributing factor may be whether parents view SDB symptoms as a problem. The aim of the study was to examine to what extent parents view SDB symptoms as a problem in children recruited from the general community and especially in children who currently have symptoms suggestive of SDB. METHODS Parents of 1639 children aged 5-10 y attending middle school in South Australia completed a questionnaire which included demographics and assessed the frequency over the previous school week of 32 sleep habits including six SDB sleep habit items. The sample was restricted to typically developing children and excluded children with medical problems likely to impact SDB. The final sample included 1610 children without a prior diagnosis of SDB and 29 with a prior diagnosis and/or treatment of SDB. Parents were asked to rate children's sleep habits using a 4-pt scale (never, rarely, sometimes and usually) and if the sleep habit was perceived to be a problem (yes/no). Children who sometimes or usually reported a sleep habit item were labelled as symptomatic. RESULTS Parents of children with, compared to those without, a prior diagnosis of SDB, were more likely to report the presence of SDB symptoms which were more frequently viewed as a problem. In children without a prior diagnosis of SDB, parents of symptomatic children viewed most SDB symptoms as a problem ranging from 91% for apnoea, 63% snorted/gasped, 63% watched child breathing at night, 58% snored loudly, 49% snored to 32% breathing heavily at night. Additional analyses in the combined sample revealed that a prior diagnosis of SDB, gender, socioeconomic status and ethnicity were weak predictors of whether parents viewed SDB sleep symptoms as a problem. CONCLUSION In children with symptoms suggestive of SDB, most parents viewed most SDB symptoms as a problem especially apnoea. The high frequency is contrary to that expected given the under-reporting of SDB symptoms at medical consultation. This suggests that additional factors other than whether parents consider SDB symptoms as a problem might better explain the under-reporting of SDB symptoms at medical consultation. Given the important impact on child health and medical service provision, future studies examining the factors that prompt parents to discuss SDB symptoms at medical consultation are warranted.

Abstract
Background
High levels of digital media use with screen-based devices has been found to threaten several aspects of child and adolescent health. However, the rapid change in digital media use behavior in our society over the past decade has rendered much of the existing evidence outdated.
Materials and methods
The present work reports data ascertained from 2016 to 2019 on preschoolers’ digital media use and book reading among 4‑ to 6‑year-old children from the longitudinal Ulm SPATZ Health Study. These data are supplemented by exploring the association of child digital media use and book reading with aspects of children’s sleep and sleep-related fears.
Results
After data management, 581 children participated at the age of 4 years. At the ages of 5 and 6 years, data were available for 508 and 426 participants, respectively. Median age of the mothers was 33 years (range 21–54) and 70% had graduated from high school. Most time spent using digital media was represented by passive activities in front of a screen. Time spent using digital media increased with children’s age. An increased risk of the fear of sleeping alone (RR: 1.35, [95% CI: 1.07; 1.70]) and fear of the dark (1.47 [95% CI 1.16; 1.87]) was documented for exposure to “all media” higher than the median as compared to lower levels. Exposure to “books” above the median and compared to lower levels was tentatively associated with a relevant 18% reduction in the risk of both fear of sleeping alone and fear of the dark (0.82 [95% CI 0.65; 1.03] and 0.82 [95% CI 0.64; 1.05], respectively).
Conclusion
Our results suggest that reducing time spent using digital media and potentially substituting this time by reading books, which seem to be a safe alternative, is a valid solution to reduce some common aspects of poor sleep in preschoolers.

Abstract
Although sleep problems at young ages are well investigated, the prevalence of bad sleepers and the determinants of sleep quality perception remain unexplored in these populations. For this purpose, we addressed these issues in a sample of children (n = 307), preadolescents (n = 717), and adolescents (n = 406) who completed the School Sleep Habits Survey, addressing sleep quality perception, sleep habits, sleep features, daytime behavior and sleep disturbances, circadian preference, and dreaming. The sample was split in “good sleepers” and “bad sleepers”, based on the answer to the question item assessing overall subjective sleep quality. Being a bad sleeper was reported by 11.7% of the sample, with significant between-groups differences (children: 8.3%; preadolescents: 11.3%; adolescents: 15.3%; p = 0.01). At all ages, relative to good sleepers, bad sleepers showed higher eveningness, sleepiness, and depression, longer sleep latency, more frequent insufficient sleep, nocturnal awakenings, sleep–wake behavioral problems, and unpleasant dreams (all p’s ≤ 0.01). Sleep quality perception was predicted: in children, by depressed mood, eveningness, and unpleasant dreams (all p’s ≤ 0.01); in preadolescents, by sleep latency, awakening frequency, depressed mood, sufficiency of sleep, and unpleasant dreams (all p’s < 0.01); in adolescents, by awakening frequency, depressed mood, and sufficiency of sleep (all p’s < 0.001). In children, bad subjective sleep quality appears to be mainly determined by daytime psychological features, for example, depressed mood, whereas at later ages, sleep characteristics, such as frequent awakenings, add to the former determinants. This could depend on (a) the appearance, with increasing age, of objective sleep modifications and (b) a greater attention paid by adolescents to their sleep characteristics.

Abstract
An increasing number of children experience inadequate sleep, which negatively effects their health. To promote healthy sleep among children, it is essential to understand the underlying determinants. This online concept mapping study therefore explores potential determinants of children’s inadequate sleep as perceived by professionals with expertise in the sleep health of children aged 4–12 years. Participants (n = 27) were divided in three groups: (1) doctors (n = 9); (2) nurses (n = 11); (3) sleep experts (n = 7). Participants generated potential determinants (i.e., ideas) of children’s inadequate sleep. Subsequently, they sorted all ideas by relatedness and rated their importance. These data were analysed using multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analysis. The results of all three groups were combined and validated by an additional group of professionals (n = 16). A large variety of perceived determinants were identified. The most important determinants perceived by all groups belonged to the categories psychosocial determinants (i.e., worrying, a change in daily life), daytime and evening activities (i.e., screen use before bedtime, stimulating game play before bedtime, inadequate amount of daytime physical activity), and pedagogical determinants (i.e., inconsistent sleep schedule, lack of a bedtime routine). These perspectives are valuable for future longitudinal studies on the determinants of children’s sleep and the development of future healthy sleep interventions.

Abstract
Introduction: Parental cognitions may directly and indirectly contribute to infant sleep outcomes. This review provides a systematic up-to-date overview of the associations between parental cognitions and infant sleep problems with special emphasis on temporal relationships and the content of parental cognitions. Methods: A systematic literature research in PubMed and Web of Science Core Collection sensu Liberati and PRISMA guidelines was carried out in March 2020 using the search terms (parent* AND infant* AND sleep* problem*), including studies with correlational or control group designs investigating associations between parental cognitions and sleep problems in children aged 1-6 years. Results: Twenty-three studies (published from 1985 to 2016) met inclusion criteria, of which 14 reported group differences or associations between parental sleep-related cognitions and child sleep outcomes. Nine papers additionally reported on the role of general parental child-related cognitions not directly pertaining to sleep. Findings from longitudinal studies suggest that parental cognitions often preceded child sleep problems. Cognitions pertaining to difficulties with limit-setting were especially prevalent in parents of poor sleepers and were positively associated with both subjective and objective measures of child sleep outcomes. Conclusions: Parental cognitions appear to play a pivotal role for the development and maintenance of sleep problems in young children, arguing that parents' attitudes and beliefs regarding child sleep inadvertently prompts parental behavior toward adverse sleep in offspring. Associations are however based on maternal reports and small to moderate effect sizes. Thus, additional parental factors such as mental health or self-efficacy, as well as additional offspring factors including temperamental dispositions and regulatory abilities, require consideration in further studies.
