Positive Psychological Capital Mediates the Association between Burnout and Nursing Performance Outcomes among Hospital Nurses

The relationship between medical staff burnout and subjective wellbeing: the chain mediating role of psychological capital and perceived social support

Background

Medical staff play a crucial role in delivering healthcare services, especially during epidemics of infectious diseases such as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, there is a growing issue of burnout and low wellbeing among this group. While it is widely recognized that burnout has a negative impact on subjective wellbeing, the exact relationship between the two is not yet completely understood. The purpose of this study is to explore the chain mediating role of psychological capital and perceived social support between burnout and subjective wellbeing among medical staff.

Methods

Using the convenient sampling method, 604 medical staff were selected for a cross-sectional study. All participants completed a self-report questionnaire that collected demographic information, as well as data from the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey, General Wellbeing Schedule, Psychological Capital Questionnaire, and Perceived Social Support Scale. SPSS 27.0 and SPSS PROCESS macro were used for data analysis.

Results

There was a significant correlation between burnout, psychological capital, perceived social support, and subjective wellbeing (p < 0.01). Burnout not only has a direct negative impact on the subjective wellbeing of medical staff (effect: -0.2045; Bootstrap 95%CI: -0.2506, -0.1583), but also exerts an indirect influence on subjective wellbeing through three pathways: the independent mediating effect of psychological capital (effect: -0.0481; Bootstrap 95%CI: -0.0876, -0.0109), the independent mediating effect of perceived social support (effect: -0.0092; Bootstrap 95%CI: -0.0203, -0.0003), and the chained mediating effect of psychological capital and perceived social support (effect: -0.0092; Bootstrap 95%CI: -0.0183, -0.0019).

Conclusion

High burnout in medical staff can impair the level of psychological capital, leading to diminished perceived social support and ultimately reduced subjective wellbeing. The findings of this study contribute to understanding the potential pathways between burnout and subjective wellbeing and provide preliminary data support for developing strategies to improve the mental health of medical staff.

Job crafting, positive psychological capital, and social support as predictors of job embeddedness on among clinical nurses- a structural model design

BACKGROUND

This study establishes the relationships among role conflict, positive psychological capital, social support, job crafting, and job embeddedness among clinical nurses. The results are expected to provide a basis for efficient human resource management in hospitals.

METHODS

Considering a 15% dropout rate, we distributed 300 copies of our questionnaire, of which 290 were returned. We used 260 responses in the final analysis after excluding 40 responses that were incomplete or showed an identical pattern in the item responses. Participants were clinical nurses with less than one year of experience in general and tertiary general hospitals in G province and D metropolitan city in South Korea. A structured questionnaire was administered from January 10 to February 28, 2022. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 26.0. We assessed the statistical significance using the bootstrapping method.

RESULTS

The direct and total effects (both β = 0.806, p =.007) of positive psychological capital on job crafting were significant. The direct and total effects (both β = 0.451, p =.004) of social support on job crafting were significant. The direct (γ = 0.292, p =.055), indirect (γ = -. 671, p =.003), and total (γ = - 0.379, p =.008) effects of role conflict on job crafting were significant. The direct (γ = - 0.382, p =.007), indirect (γ = - 0.208 p =.003), and total (γ = - 0.589, p =.006) effects of role conflict on job embeddedness were significant. The direct and total (both β = 0.548, p =.005) effects of job crafting on job embeddedness were significant.

CONCLUSIONS

Nurses' job embeddedness is directly influenced by their job crafting, which is shaped by high levels of positive psychological capital and social support. When job crafting takes place, role conflict increases, and if job crafting becomes difficult because of severe role conflict, job embeddedness decreases. Therefore, to increase job embeddedness among clinical nurses, hospitals must implement support systems and programs to increase job autonomy, and positive psychological capital to promote job crafting.

Individual-level positive psychological capital that enhances managers' transformational leadership effectiveness on nurse career success

AIMS

This study investigated the impact of nurse managers' transformational leadership on the subjective career success of staff nurses, particularly through exploring potential variations in this relationship based on nurses' positive psychological capital.

BACKGROUND

Amid a challenging nursing environment, nurses' perceptions of career success affect their individual psychological satisfaction and improve work performance. Human resource strategies often include factors for workers' subjective career success, e.g., managers' transformational leadership and individual-level positive psychological capital.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study collected survey data in 2021 from 348 staff nurses in 40 wards of a Korean tertiary hospital. The survey instruments included the Transformational Leadership tool, the Subjective Career Success Inventory, and the Psychological Capital Questionnaire. Multilevel hierarchical regression analysis and a simple slope test were used to examine moderating effects. The STROBE checklist was used for reporting.

RESULTS

Nurses reported significantly higher subjective career success when they worked in units where unit managers' transformational leadership was greater. This relationship strengthened when nurses had high positive psychological capital.

DISCUSSION

To enhance staff nurses' perceptions of career success, both managers' transformational leadership and individual nurses' positivity should be emphasized in nursing practice and education.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND NURSING POLICY

Comprehensive efforts to highlight managers' transformational leadership and staff nurses' positive psychological capital can enhance subjective career success, which in turn improve nurses' job performance and intention to stay. Nursing policymakers should value transformational leadership among managers so nurses can achieve their subjective goals. An organization-wide institutional system should be developed so nurses can receive support to strengthen their positivity. Future research should include interventions to foster managers' leadership and nurses' positive capital.

Psychological Capital and Turnover Intention: The Mediating Role of Burnout among Healthcare Professionals

Psychological capital (PsyCap) has been identified as an individual's positive psychological state of development that can help to reduce negative organizational outcomes. However, there is still a gap in understanding how PsyCap influences different aspects of organizations. This study investigates the mediating role of burnout in the relationship between PsyCap and turnover intentions among healthcare professionals. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 320 healthcare professionals. The estimation of the relationships between PsyCap, burnout, and turnover intentions was obtained through structural equation modelling (SEM). A mediation analysis was carried out using bootstrapping procedures. The results show that burnout has a significant and positive effect on turnover intention and PsyCap has a significant and negative effect on burnout. Moreover, burnout fully mediates the relationship between PsyCap and turnover intention. These findings suggest that PsyCap can effectively reduce negative outcomes like burnout, but its positive impact may be limited when considering other outcomes such as turnover intention.

Psychological capital among clinical nurses: A latent profile analysis

AIM

To determine the psychological capital level of nurses and explore the latent profiles of nurses regarding their psychological capital scores.

BACKGROUND

The use of individual-centered analysis for the connotation of nurses' psychological capital structure is less studied and still needs to be further explored.

METHODS

By the convenience sampling method, 494 clinical nurses from 7 general hospitals in Sichuan province were selected. The study was conducted from December 2022 to February 2023. Latent profile analysis was used for data analysis. We followed STROBE guidelines in this research.

RESULTS

The total mean score of nurses' psychological capital is 5.17 (SD = 0.8). The following four latent profiles were identified: "poor" (4.5%), "medium" (22.9%), "well-off" (41.5%), and "rich" (31.1%). Multiple logistic regression showed that the number of hours worked per day and the number of night shifts per month were negative predictors of psychological capital, and psychological training and job satisfaction were protective factors of psychological capital.

DISCUSSION

Our study found that the four profiles can be distinguished by "poor," "well-off," "medium," and "rich" levels of psychological capital. Among them, more than 70% of the nurses belonged to the well-off and rich profiles, and the number of the poor profile was the lowest.

CONCLUSION

The overall psychological capital of clinical nurses is at a medium-high level. Each profile is influenced by multiple sociodemographic factors (i.e., age, working hours, monthly income, psychological training, and job satisfaction).

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY

Administrators should develop enhancement strategies to improve the mental health of nurses based on the characteristics of their psychological capital profiles.

The mediating role of psychological capital on the relationship between authentic leadership and nurses' caring behavior: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Caring behavior among nurses would have an impact on patient outcomes. External organizational job resources and personal internal psychological resources are correlated to nurses' caring behavior. Authentic leadership and psychological capital were shown to be correlated with nurses' caring behavior in previous studies. However, the relationships among the three are nevertheless unclear. This study aimed to examine if psychological capital could act as a mediator between nursing managers' authentic leadership and nurses' caring behavior.

METHODS

In December 2021, a total of 3,662 nurses were recruited from 37 hospitals in Anhui Province, China. They filled out online surveys, including general demographic information, the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire, the Psychological Capital Questionnaire, and the Caring Behavior Inventory. Structural Equation Modeling and the bootstrapping procedure were used to examine the mediating role of psychological capital.

RESULTS

The scores of authentic leadership, psychological capital, and caring behavior of 3,495 nurses were 52.04 ± 13.24, 96.89 ± 17.78, and 104.28 ± 17.01, respectively. Psychological capital significantly mediated the relationship between authentic leadership and nurses' caring behavior (β = 0.378, p < 0.001, 95% confidence interval: 0.350 ~ 0.402), which made up 78.75% of the total impact (0.480).

CONCLUSION

The findings of this study suggested that nursing managers should develop an authentic leadership style, which can effectively improve nurses' caring behaviors toward patients in clinical practice. Meanwhile, nursing leaders should strengthen nurses' psychological evaluation and training, and promote nurses' caring behavior in clinical settings.

Registered nurses' psychological capital: A scoping review

AIMS

The aim was to examine the extent and scope of empirical research concerning registered nurses' psychological capital.

BACKGROUND

In a time of global nursing shortage, identifying variables that could positively contribute to the retention of the nursing workforce is essential. Prior research has shown that psychological capital correlates positively with employees' better performance and well-being.

DESIGN

A scoping review.

DATA SOURCES

A systematic literature search was conducted in the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science and Scopus covering the period from 1 January 2005 to 7 May 2023.

REVIEW METHODS

The JBI methodological guidance for scoping reviews was followed. The results were summarized narratively.

RESULTS

A total of 111 studies reported in 114 peer-reviewed articles were included. Studies were carried out across 20 countries, with the majority from China (45), Australia (nine), Pakistan (nine), Canada (eight), South Korea (eight) and the United States (eight). A positive correlation was found between registered nurses' psychological capital and desirable work-related outcomes, such as work engagement, commitment and retention intention.

CONCLUSION

A comprehensive overview of research evidence suggests that psychological capital is associated with many positive work-related outcomes and might therefore be a valuable resource for reducing nurse turnover.

Relationship between work engagement and healthy work environment among Chinese ICU nurses: The mediating role of psychological capital

AIM

To evaluate the relationship between healthy work environment and work engagement considering the effect of psychological capital among ICU nurses.

DESIGN

The study was cross-sectional design.

METHODS

The subjects were 671 registered nurses from 20 ICUs in 18 general hospitals in Shandong province between October 2021 and December 2021. The questionnaires testing nurses' perception of healthy work environment, their work engagement, and psychological capital were used. Structural equation modeling was used to explore their relationship.

RESULTS

Work engagement was positively affected by a healthy work environment and psychological capital. The structural equation modeling showed psychological capital mediated the relationship between healthy work environment and their work engagement.

PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION

There were 681 clinical nurses reported at public contribution for responding to the questionnaires and providing valuable data for the study and there was no patient contribution in this study.

Assessing the effects of organizational support, psychological capital, organizational identification on job performance among nurses: a structural equation modeling approach

BACKGROUND

The job performance of individual employees determines the overall performance of an organization, and organizational support is known as an important resource at the organizational level to enhance job performance. Although nursing scholars have confirmed the crucial role of organizational support in enhancing job performance, there are no studies on whether psychological capital and organizational identification mediate the association between organizational support and job performance. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of organizational support, psychological capital, and organizational identification on nurses' job performance.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 455 nurses from 21 public hospitals in China. Instruments were perceived organizational support scale, task performance scale, contextual performance scale, Nurse Psychological Capital Questionnaire, and Organizational Identification Questionnaire. Survey data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS, and hypotheses were tested using path model analysis.

RESULTS

Nurses' perceived organizational support, psychological capital, organizational identification, and task/contextual performance were positively correlated in every two variables. Psychological capital played an important mediating role in perceived organizational support and task/contextual performance, as well as organizational identification. The multi-mediating effect of psychological capital and organizational identification on the relationship between organizational support and task/contextual performance were 0.14 and 0.25, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

There was a positive correlation between organizational support and job performance among nurses. Psychological support, organizational identification and contextual performance played a chain mediation role in the relationship between organizational support on task performance in nurses. Nursing managers should pay more attention to enhancing nurses' psychological capital and organizational identification through effective interventions to improve nurses' job performance.

Levels of psychological capital among nurses: A systematic review and meta-analysis

AIM

To systematically evaluate the available literature about overall levels of psychological capital among nurses.

BACKGROUND

Psychological capital is described as a positive mental state associated with nurses' mental health, quality of care and patient outcomes.

METHODS

A search was carried out using PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library and Chinese Database, including China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Biological Medical (CBM), WanFang and Weipu Database from the inception of the databases until October 2021. Subsequently, two researchers identified and reviewed the literature and assessed the risk of bias. A random-effects model was conducted to achieve pooled estimates of psychological capital scales.

RESULTS

The pooled mean score of the psychological capital scale was 4.21 (95% CI, 4.07-4.35). For subdimensions such as hope, optimism, self-efficacy and resilience, the score was 4.12 (95% CI, 4.11-4.12), 4.34 (95% CI, 4.34-4.34), 4.50 (95% CI, 4.50-4.51) and 4.34 (95% CI, 4.33-4.34), respectively. Subgroup analyses indicated that nurses practising in Asia and intensive care units might have experienced lower psychological capital levels. In addition, significant differences were noted in studies with sample size and publication year. Studies with a large sample size reported a higher psychological capital than those with a small sample size. The pooled mean scores of psychological capital were higher in 2014-2018 than in 2019-2021. Meta-regression further revealed that geographic regions of participants might be a source of heterogeneity, and the Asian region had 32.23% of the heterogeneity between studies, and the African region had 18.71%.

CONCLUSION

This review is the first to synthesize published research and calculate a pooled score of psychological capital in nurses. These findings indicated that nurses reported a medium-high level of psychological capital, and there was significant heterogeneity.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING POLICY

Administrators and policymakers should concentrate on nurses' psychological capital and tactically integrate psychological capital into nursing vocational training programs.

Strength use and workers' job burnout in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: The mediating role of psychological capital

AIM

This research aimed to explore the link of strength use with job burnout and investigate the role of psychological capital in the strength use-job burnout relationship among Chinese workers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

DESIGN

A descriptive, cross-sectional design.

METHOD

This study was conducted from September to October 2020. A total of 351 employees working at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from five cities in China completed a series of valid and reliable instruments, namely, Strengths Use Questionnaire, Positive Psychological Capital Questionnaire and Job Burnout Questionnaire. The PROCESS macro was used to test our hypotheses.

RESULTS

We found that people with higher strength use had lower job burnout compared with those with lower levels of strength use. Furthermore, resilience and hope acted as mediators of the relationship between strength use and job burnout. Moreover, resilience and hope played equally important roles in the strength use-job burnout relationship.

CONCLUSION

Resilience and hope mediate the association of strength use with job burnout in workers of Chinese Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

IMPACT

Health authorities can alleviate employees' job burnout by encouraging strength use and building their psychological capital, especially resilience and hope.

The relationship between psychiatric nurses' perceived organizational support and job burnout: Mediating role of psychological capital

Background

Psychiatric nurses need to keep close contact with patients suffering from mental illness. Because of the special nature of their profession, there is an increasing incidence of job burnout among psychiatric nurses.

Aim

This study examined the relationship between psychiatric nurses' perceived organizational support, job burnout, and psychological capital. It also investigated the mediating role of psychological capital in the relationship between their perceived organizational support and job burnout.

Methods

A total of 916 psychiatric nurses were recruited from 6 grade-III mental facilities in Shandong Province using the stratified sampling approach. Their data were collected and examined using a general demographic data questionnaire, The Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Perceived Organizational Support Scale, and the Psychological Capital Questionnaire.

Results

The total score of job burnout was 53.71 ± 16.37. Specifically, 73.69% of the nurses had moderate to severe emotional exhaustion, 76.75% had moderate to severe job burnout pertaining to depersonalization, and 98.80% had moderate to severe job burnout pertaining to personal accomplishment. Spearman's correlation analysis showed that both psychological capital (r = -0.35, p < 0.01) and perceived organizational support (r = -0.31, p < 0.01) were adversely related to job burnout. Additionally, psychological capital somewhat mediated the relationship between perceived organizational support and job burnout. Its mediating impact accounted for 33.20% of the overall effect.

Conclusion

This study's participants had a moderate to severe level of job burnout. However, organizational support and psychological capital can be crucial in alleviating this problem among psychiatric nurses. Therefore, nursing managers and medical institutions should undertake timely and positive interventions to improve psychiatric nurses' mental health and prevent job burnout. While exploring the impact of organizational support and psychological capital on job burnout, future studies should consider other effective influencing factors, and the relationship between the different factors should be explored in depth. This would provide a basis for developing a job burnout prevention mechanism.

The mediating role of social support in the relationship between nurses' psychological capital and depression during public health emergencies in tertiary medical institutions

OBJECTIVE

To explore the effect of social support in nurses who have depression during public health emergencies in tertiary medical institutions.

METHODS

This retrospective analysis was conducted in Wuhan from July 2021 to December 2021. We distributed a self-made demographic questionnaire, Depression Scale (CES-D 10), Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), and Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PCQ-24) through Questionnaire Star, and conducted a questionnaire survey with nurses in multiple tertiary medical institutions during the public health emergency in Wuhan. At the same time, a questionnaire survey was conducted with the general population during the public health emergency in Wuhan through the Self-made demographic questionnaire and Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS) issued by questionnaire star. In the end, 1052 valid questionnaires were obtained, including 526 valid questionnaires for nurses and 526 valid questionnaires for the general population. The social support scores of nurses and the general population were analyzed. The association between social support and nurse depression was analyzed by multiple linear regression. The asymptotic policy was used to examine social support as a potential mediator of the association between psychological capital and depressive symptoms.

RESULTS

There were no remarkable differences in age, marital condition, monthly revenue, professional title, occupational condition, smoking, and drinking among nurses (all P>0.05). The impersonal social support score, support utilization score, and total support score of nurses were lower than in the general Chinese population (P<0.05). Both lower subjective support scores and lower objective support scores of nurses were interrelated with major depressive symptoms (β=0.257, P<0.01; β=-0.314, P=0.026). Regression analysis with psychological capital as the independent variable and social support as the control variable showed that social support was negatively correlated with depressive symptoms (β=-0.205, P<0.01), social support had a positive moderating effect on the relationship between psychological capital and depressive symptoms (β=0.047, P<0.05). Self-efficacy was taken as an independent variable in regression analysis, after social support was added as the control variable, social support was negatively interrelated with depressive symptoms (β=-0.118, P<0.01), and self-efficacy was negatively interrelated with depressive symptoms (β=-0.251, P<0.01), the effect between social support and self-efficacy was interrelated with depressive symptoms (β=0.144, P<0.05). Hope was taken as an independent variable in regression analysis, after social support was added as the control variable, social support was negatively interrelated with depressive symptoms (β=-0.296, P<0.01), and hope was negatively correlated with depressive symptoms (β=-0.157, P<0.01). When the social support dimension was added, the effect of psychological capital on depressive symptoms increased (P<0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Social support is a key external intervention factor to alleviate nurses' depressive symptoms, and psychological capital is a key internal positive psychological support resource to combat nurses' depressive symptoms. Social support can increase the influence of psychological capital on depressive symptoms.

SBAR Method for Improving Well-Being in the Internal Medicine Unit: Quasi-Experimental Research

SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) is a tool for standardizing and improving interprofessional communication. This study aims to explore the impact of SBAR in healthcare professionals' wellbeing, through concepts such as job satisfaction, engagement, resilience, and job performance, in the internal medicine unit of a university hospital in the province of León (Spain). This is an observational, descriptive, longitudinal case study with a pre- and post-intervention approach. Questionnaires were distributed to a group of doctors, nurses, and healthcare assistants before and after the implementation of the SBAR tool in the ward. The use of SBAR was monitored to ensure staff compliance. Data statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS program. Resilience levels increased significantly post-intervention. Job satisfaction and engagement levels remained neutral, slightly decreasing post-intervention. Besides' being a useful tool to improve communication, SBAR was effective in improving resilience among staff. Several aspects related to hospital management may have had an impact on job satisfaction and engagement results.

The New and Key Roles for Psychological Contract Status and Engagement in Predicting Various Performance Behaviors of Nurses

The study examines the impact of the psychological contract (PC), including the often-studied PC breach in addition to the novel approach of PC status, as predictors of performance among nurses, mediated by engagement, job satisfaction, and psychological distress. A sample of 177 nurses and midwives from a medium to a large hospital in Australia completed a self-report questionnaire. Structural equation modelling was used to determine associations between the predictors (i.e., negative affectivity (NA), PC breach, PC status)), mediating variables (i.e., engagement, job satisfaction, and psychological distress), and three types of performance behaviors: organizational citizenship behavior for the individual, for the organization (OCBI, OCBO) and in-role behavior (IRB) simultaneously. Specifically, psychological contract status positively predicted engagement, whereas breach negatively predicted engagement and positively predicted job satisfaction. NA positively predicted distress, and distress negatively predicted OCBO and IRB. Lastly, engagement positively predicted job satisfaction, OCBI, OCBO, and IRB. The findings indicate that psychological contract status may predict engagement (and in turn, performance) over and above psychological contract breach, and thus this novel construct should be examined further. The importance of engagement for predicting the performance behaviors and mental health of nurses may also offer new insights.

Post-traumatic growth experience of first-line emergency nurses infected with COVID-19 during the epidemic period-A qualitative study in Shanghai, China

Background

In March 2022, Shanghai, China, was hit by a severe wave of SARS-CoV-2 transmission caused by the Omicron variant strain. The medical staff was greatly infected during this period, which posed a traumatic event for them. Meanwhile, they also experience post-traumatic growth under introspection and positive change. However, the psychological coping and growth after infection with COVID-19 among medical staff have rarely been investigated.

Objectives

To explore the process and influencing factors of post-traumatic growth among emergency nurses infected with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) so as to provide a new perspective and theoretical basis for psychological rehabilitation or intervention for medical staff who experienced traumatic events.

Methods

The study used a qualitative design based on the phenomenological approach. A purposive sampling method was used to explore the subjective feelings and post-traumatic growth among 13 first-line emergency nurses infected with COVID-19 in Shanghai, China. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted in June 2022. A Seven-step Colaizzi process was used for data analysis.

Results

Themes were described and extracted from the experience and insights at different stages during the fight against the virus. Three main themes, i.e., stress period, adjustment period, and growth period, as well as several sub-themes, were identified.

Conclusion

First-line emergency nurses infected with COVID-19 are a sensitive group that should be given more attention. Investigating how they achieve psychological adjustment and growth in the case of severe trauma can provide valuable references for nursing management and education in the future. Society, hospital and nursing managers should pay more attention to the PTG of nurses and establish supportive PTG strategies, which will benefit the retention rate and career development of nurses.

Protective Factors against Morally Injurious Memories from the COVID-19 Pandemic on Nurses' Occupational Wellbeing: A Cross-Sectional Experimental Study

The COVID-19 pandemic was a fertile ground for nurses' exposure to self- and other-Potentially Morally Injurious Events (PMIEs). Our study explored the effects of nurses' memories of self- and other-PMIEs on occupational wellbeing and turnover intentions. Using an experimental design on a convenience sample of 634 Romanian nurses, we tested a conceptual model with PLS-SEM, finding adequate explanatory and predictive power. Memories of self- and other-PMIEs were uniquely associated with work engagement, burnout, and turnover intentions, compared to a control group. These relationships were mediated by the three basic psychological needs. Relatedness was more thwarted for memories of other-PMIEs, while competence and autonomy were more thwarted for memories of self-PMIEs. Perceived supervisor support weakened the indirect effect between type of PMIE and turnover intentions, through autonomy satisfaction, but not through burnout. Self-disclosure weakened the indirect effect between type of PMIE and turnover intentions, through autonomy satisfaction, and both burnout and work engagement. Our findings emphasize the need for different strategies in addressing the negative long-term effects of nurses' exposure to self- and other-PMIEs, according to the basic psychological need satisfaction and type of wellbeing indicator.

Psychological capital has a positive correlation with humanistic care ability among nurses

Objective

With the improvement in health awareness, humanistic care ability of nurses has become a focus of public attention. The aim of the study was to confirm the relationship between psychological capital and humanistic care ability of nurses, and to provide suggestions on improving the humanistic care ability of nurses.

Methods

A cross-section survey was conducted. Three hundred thirty-nine nurses were recruited from a tertiary general hospital in Taizhou, China. Psychological capital and humanistic care ability were measured using a self-reported questionnaire. Correlation analysis and stepwise multiple regression analysis were performed to analyze the correlation between psychological capital and humanistic care ability.

Results

The psychological capital and humanistic care ability scores were 91.57 ± 13.96 and 189.08 ± 20.37, respectively. Differences in psychological capital scores across professional titles (F = 4.88, p = 0.01), departments (F = 3.69, p < 0.001), years of work (F = 4.68, p < 0.001), and marital status (t = 3.25, p < 0.001) were statistically significant. There were statistical differences for the humanistic care ability scores among nurses based on marital status (p = 0.01). The total psychological capital scores and the four sub-dimensions scores were positively correlated with the humanistic care ability scores among nurses. Self-efficacy was the main predictor of nurses’ humanistic care ability.

Conclusion

Psychological capital positively affected the humanistic care ability of nurses. Self-efficacy was the main predictor of humanistic care ability. Nursing managers can formulate strategies from the perspective of positive psychology to improve humanistic care ability of nurses.

Nursing in Primary Health Care: association between leadership, psychological capital, and burnout implications

OBJECTIVES

to verify the association between authentic leadership and burnout syndrome in Primary Health Care nursing professionals and analyze the relationship between positive psychological capital and burnout syndrome in subordinate nursing professionals.

METHODS

a field, descriptive-exploratory, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, developed with the nursing team, in Basic Health Units in the city of São Paulo, with the application of the sociodemographic questionnaires, Burnout Characterization Scale [Escala de Caracterização do Burnout], Authentic Leadership Questionnaire and Psychological Capital Questionnaire.

RESULTS

in leaders' perception, there was no evidence of significant associations between burnout and authentic leadership scales. There was a significant negative association of the burnout scale dimensions with the leadership dimensions regarding the subordinates. There was evidence of significant negative associations in the burnout scores with the scores of the psychological questionnaire dimensions.

CONCLUSIONS

in nursing, burnout is associated with authentic leadership and psychological capital.

Development of the Psychological Capital Scale for Male Nursing Students in Taiwan and Testing Its Measurement Invariance between Genders

The aims of this study were to develop a psychological capital (PsyCap) scale for male nursing students and to compare the scores with those of female nursing students. Few past studies have focused on male nursing students to understand their PsyCap relative to female nursing students. We recruited 384 male nursing students in Taiwan to construct the PsyCap Scale with 16 items and four factors based on the relevant literature: hope, optimism, resiliency, and self-efficacy. The scale showed good model fit in confirmatory factor analysis with factor loadings from 0.62 to 0.78. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients ranged from 0.75 to 0.83 for the four subscales and 0.91 for the total scale. We also conducted measurement invariance tests with data from 402 female nursing student volunteers in Taiwan. The invariance of factor loadings and intercepts of the established scale (i.e., with the same unit and origin between genders) indicated that the male nursing students had higher PsyCap in optimism and resiliency than the females. We developed a 16-item-scale to make administration rapid and convenient and applied advanced statistical methods for reliable and valid comparisons between sexes. The results may help the government to create education programmes or policies supporting male nursing students.

Effects of role overload, work engagement and perceived organisational support on nurses' job performance during the COVID-19 pandemic

Aims

We aim to study the effect of role overload, work engagement and perceived organisational support on nurses' job performance, including task performance, interpersonal facilitation and job dedication.

Background

Many nurses have suffered from role overload at work during the COVID‐19 pandemic. However, the investigations of the influence mechanisms and boundary conditions through and under which role overload is associated with job performance have shown inconsistent results.

Methods

A total of 595 Chinese nurses were studied from November 2020 to February 2021. Confirmatory factor analysis, maximum likelihood estimation and bootstrapping analysis were used to test the mediating process and the moderating effect.

Results

Work engagement partly mediated the relationships of role overload with task performance (β = −.253, p < .001, 95% CI: [−.315, −.204]) and interpersonal facilitation (β = −.202, p < .001, 95% CI: [−.261, −.145]); work engagement also fully mediated the relationship between role overload and job dedication (β = −.239, p < .001, 95% CI: [−.302, −.186]). Perceived organisational support moderated the relationships of role overload with task performance, interpersonal facilitation and work dedication (β = −.171, p < .001, β = −.154, p < .001 and β = −.175, p < .001, respectively).

Conclusions

Work engagement is the linchpin linking role overload to distal outcomes of job performance. Perceived organisational support mitigates the ways in which role overload undermines job performance.

Implications for Nursing Management

Hospital administrators can minimize the effects of role overload and create a more supportive organisational environment to promote the job performance of nurses.

Enfermagem na Atenção Primária à Saúde: associação entre liderança, capital psicológico e implicações no burnout

RESUMO Objetivos: verificar a associação entre liderança autêntica e síndrome de burnout em profissionais de enfermagem da Atenção Primária à Saúde e analisar a relação entre capital psicológico positivo e síndrome de burnout em profissionais de enfermagem liderados. Métodos: estudo de campo, descritivo-exploratório, transversal, de abordagem quantitativa, desenvolvido com a equipe de enfermagem, em Unidades Básicas de Saúde do município de São Paulo, com aplicação dos questionários sociodemográfico, Escala de Caracterização do Burnout, Authentic Leadership Questionnaire e Psychological Capital Questionnaire. Resultados: na percepção dos líderes, não houve evidências de associações significantes entre as escalas de burnout e liderança autêntica. Com relação aos liderados, observou-se associação negativa significante das dimensões da escala de burnout com as dimensões de liderança. Nas associações dos escores de burnout com escores do questionário de capital psicológico, observaram se evidências de associações negativas significantes. Conclusões: na enfermagem, o burnout está associado com liderança autêntica e capital psicológico.

Does Psychological Capital Mediate Occupational Stress and Coping Among Nurses in ICU

As an exploitable positive psychological state that individual performs during growth and development processes, psychological capital (PsyCap) was deemed as an essential factor in occupational health. This study aims to explore mediating effects of PsyCap on the relationship between job stress and coping style among ICU nurses. A cross-sectional sample of 288 nurses was recruited. A high-level of occupational stress (2.32 ± 0.69) and PsyCap (4.62 ± 0.93) were found among participants who mainly used a positive coping style (2.04 ± 0.59). PsyCap was significantly negatively correlated with job stress (β = -0.250; p < .01) and positively with coping style (β = 0.416; p < .01). Structural equation model analysis revealed that job stress negatively influenced PsyCap, while PsyCap positively influenced coping style. Results verified the mediating role of PsyCap and suggested that an increase in PsyCap contributes to better control of job stress and the improvement of one's coping style.

Association between psychological capital and spiritual care competencies of clinical nurses: A multicentre cross-sectional study

AIMS

To investigate the status of spiritual care competencies among clinical nurses and their relationships with psychological capital.

BACKGROUND

Limited knowledge is about the influence of positive personal characteristics on nurses' spiritual care competencies.

METHODS

A multicentre cross-sectional study. A total of 1717 nurses were recruited from nine separate Chinese hospitals. Online questionnaires were delivered through a local nursing association to assess socio-demographics, spiritual care competencies and psychological capital of nurses.

RESULTS

Nurses had mild-to-moderate levels of spiritual care competencies and moderate levels of psychological capital. Psychological capital and its two metrics (self-efficacy and hope), spiritual care education, professional qualification and shift work were the main predictors of spiritual care competencies (each p < .05).

CONCLUSION

The findings of the study show a positive relationship between psychological capital and spiritual care competencies of clinical nurses. Strengthening nurses' psychological capital could improve their spiritual care competencies.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGERS

Nurse managers and hospital administrators should better understand the value of psychological capital for nurses' capacity development. Effective interventions need to be implemented separately or combined with spiritual care education programmes to improve nurses' psychological capital and spiritual care competencies.
