Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia is a musculoskeletal disease characterized by a significant reduction in muscle mass, strength, and performance. As it mostly affects older adults, it is often recognized as a disease of old age. However, sleep is also closely related to its development. Hence, it becomes critical to explore the relationship between sleep and sarcopenia in populations under 60 years of age to develop strategies for preventing sarcopenia. We here aim to explore the specific association between sleep duration and sleep quality with pre-sarcopenia in the non-elderly population using large population samples. METHODS This study involved 7,187 participants aged 20-59 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2005 and 2014. Pre-sarcopenia is defined based on the appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) adjusted for body mass index (BMI). Self-reported sleep duration was categorized into three groups: <6 h (short sleep), 6-8 h (normal sleep), and > 8 h (long sleep). Sleep quality was assessed based on the Sleep Disorder and Trouble Sleeping Questionnaire. Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression were used to examine the relationship between sleep duration and sleep quality with pre-sarcopenia. RESULTS Sleep quality was significantly linked with the risk of pre-sarcopenia (OR 1.72, 95% CI 1.36-2.18, P < 0.01). Longer or shorter sleep duration did not affect the risk of pre-sarcopenia, in contrast to normal sleep duration. Subgroup analysis demonstrated a more pronounced association in individuals who are > 40 years old (P < 0.01), non-Hispanic (P ≤ 0.01), overweight (P < 0.01), have a higher income (P < 0.01), and are more educated (P ≤ 0.01). Moreover, this association was noted in populations with or without smoking (P < 0.01) and alcohol consumption (P < 0.01), hypertension (P < 0.01) and diabetes (P ≤ 0.02). CONCLUSION Sleep quality is associated with an increased risk of pre-sarcopenia, while sleep duration is not in the population aged 20-59 years. Further prospective cohort studies with a large sample size are needed to determine causality and develop effective interventions for preventing sarcopenia in the population aged 20-59 years.

Abstract
BACKGROUND People with epilepsy (PWE) frequently experience sleep disturbances that can severely affect their quality of life. Depression is also a common symptom in the PWE population and can aggravate sleep problems. However, the interplay between epilepsy, depression, and sleep disturbances is not yet fully understood. Our study was designed to investigate the association between epilepsy and sleep disturbances in US adults and to determine whether depressive symptoms play a mediating role in this relationship. METHODS We examined data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning January 1, 2015, to March 2020, before the pandemic.A total of 10,093 participants aged ≥ 20 years with complete data on epilepsy and sleep disturbance were included. Weighted multiple logistic regression and mediation analysis were used to explore the associations among depression, epilepsy, and sleep disturbance. Interaction effects of epilepsy with various covariates were also investigated. RESULTS Epilepsy was associated with depression and sleep disturbances. Weighted logistic regression analysis revealed a significant association between epilepsy and sleep disturbances (OR = 3.67, 95% CI = 1.68-8.04). Depression partially mediated this relationship, demonstrating a mediation effect of 23.0% (indirect effect = 0.037, P < 0.001). Subgroup analyses revealed variations in the relationship between epilepsy and sleep disturbances among different groups. Furthermore, interaction analyses revealed significant interactions between epilepsy and age (P = 0.049) and hypertension (P = 0.045). CONCLUSIONS Our study utilizing NHANES data confirmed that depression partially mediated the association between epilepsy and sleep disturbance. Additionally, we observed differences in this association across demographic groups. Addressing depressive symptoms in PWE may improve their sleep quality, but further research is needed to explore the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe pulmonary function, muscle strength and functional performance in the different qualities of sleep and the impact of this on the number of physiotherapeutic assistances. METHODS This is an observational study. In the pre and post operative period, sleep behavior was evaluated using the Pittsburgh questionnaire. Patients were divided into three groups: Good Sleep Quality (GSQ), Poor Sleep Quality (PSQ) and Sleep Disordered (SDB). At this time, other tests were also performed, such as: 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), Sit and Stand Test (SST), gait speed test and Timed Up to Go (TUG), Medical Research Council (MRC), maximal inspiratory pressure and maximal expiratory, vital capacity and peak expiratory flow. The functional performance and lung function of each group were compared. RESULTS A total of 105 people, undergoing cardiac surgery and admitted to hospital were evaluated, 33 with GSQ, 41 with PSQ and 31 with SD. Patients who were in the SDB group had a lower functional performance than the other groups. 6MWT (meters) in the GSQ was 499 ± 87, versus 487 ± 91 in the PSQ and 430 ± 78 in the SD (p = 0.02). In the SST (seconds) it was 10.4 ± 1.1 in the GQS, 11.1 ± 2.3 in the PSQ and 15.4 ± 2.1 in the SD (p = 0.04). Lung function and muscle strength did not differ between groups. Regarding the refusal to perform physical therapy, the SD group was more incident, the main reason being drowsiness. CONCLUSION Based on the results, we found that sleep quality interferes with functional performance and physical therapy assistance during the hospital stay in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is more prevalent among veterans in the United States than in the general population. Similarly, veterans also exhibit higher rates of abnormal sleep duration compared to the general population. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between self-reported length of sleep and the prevalence of CKD among veterans in the United States using responses from the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). METHODS For this cross-sectional study, a total of 53,211 veterans who responded to the 2022 BRFSS survey were analyzed. Measures include the outcome variable which is self-reported CKD diagnosis and a major independent variable sleep duration. Sleep duration was recategorized into ≤ 5 hours (short sleep duration), 6-10 hours (normal sleep duration), and >10 hours (long sleep duration). Covariates included gender, age, race, residence, insurance, alcohol consumption, diabetes comorbidity, coronary artery disease (CAD) comorbidity, and stroke comorbidity. Descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate logistic regressions were conducted using the SAS software (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, North Carolina, United States). Results: The prevalence of CKD among veterans in the United States is 3332 (6.29%). Veterans with sleep duration of 6-10 hours had 17.5% lower odds of CKD than veterans who slept for ≤5 hours (adjusted OR (AOR)= 0.825, 95%CI= 0.821-0.830; P=<0.0001). Veterans who slept for more than 10 hours had 68.2% higher odds of having CKD (AOR=1.682, 95%CI= 1.662-1.702; P=<0.0001). Additionally, veterans diagnosed with diabetes, stroke, and coronary artery disease had 2.447-2.103, and 2.838, respectively, higher odds of developing CKD (AOR=2.447, 95%CI= 2.435-2.459; p=<0.0001). Veterans who were 65 years and older had higher odds of developing CKD compared to those aged 35-44 years (AOR= 5.743, 95%CI= 5.669-5.818; P<0.001). The odds of having CKD were also higher among veterans who identified as Black (AOR 1.397, 95%CI =1.388-1.405; P<0.01) or as Hispanic (AOR =1.318, 95%CI = 1.307-1.329; P<0.01) compared to non-Hispanic White veterans. Those who identified as Asian had lower odds of CKD (AOR= 0.87, 95%CI=0.853-0.888; P<0.01). Furthermore, veterans who consumed alcohol had 7.8% lower odds of having CKD as compared to individuals who did not consume alcohol (AOR= 0.922, 95%CI =0.918-0.927; p=<0.0001). Male veterans had 24.7% lower odds of having CKD as compared to female veterans (AOR = 0.753, 95%CI= 0.747-0.758; P<0.001). Conclusion: This research provides evidence of a greater prevalence of CKD among veterans with short sleep duration (≤ 5 hours) and long sleep duration (> 10 hours). Sleep hygiene education and sleep optimization programs can improve sleep and boost overall kidney health among veterans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are widely utilized to mitigate the flammability of various materials. Previous studies have revealed the impact of BFRs exposure on hormonal disruption and bone metabolism which are closely related to periodontitis. However, it remains unknown the potential relationship between BFRs and periodontitis. This study aimed to explore the association between BFRs exposure and periodontitis in US adults. METHODS The data analyzed in this study were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2014. Twelve serum BFRs were quantified using isotope dilution gas chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression was employed to evaluate the association between serum BFRs and periodontitis. Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) analyses were utilized to assess the association between mixtures of BFRs and periodontitis. RESULTS A total of 3311 eligible participants were included. Serum BFRs (PBDE-47, PBDE-99, and PBDE-154) were significantly associated with periodontitis, and the odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals(CIs) were 1.15(1.01,1.29), 1.10(1.01,1.20), and 1.12(1.01,1.25), respectively. Notably, these three BFRs were also significantly associated with the severity of periodontitis. Additionally, the BKMR model revealed a significant association between the mixture of all twelve BFRs and periodontitis. CONCLUSIONS This preliminary study suggests a significant association between specific serum BFRs (PBDE-47, PBDE-99, and PBDE-154) and periodontitis and its severity. Further prospective and experimental studies are warranted to validate our findings.

Abstract
Background Coronary artery disease (CAD) has a high incidence and poor prognosis worldwide. It has been confirmed that smartphone addiction (SA) habit can increase the incidence of hypertension and obesity in adolescents. However, the association of SA with CAD and its severity in Chinese adults remains largely unknown. Methods A total of 700 Chinese adults (aged 18-70 years) including 350 CAD patients and 350 control subjects were enrolled. The Smartphone Addiction Scale Short Version (SAS-SV) was used to measure SA habit, and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality. Multiple logistic regression was employed to analyze the relationship between SA habit and CAD. Results After adjusting for age, smoking, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and other risk factors, there was a significant association between SA habit and CAD in adults (p < 0.001). Subgroup analysis showed that there were statistical differences in the correlation between SA habit and CAD in the hypertension, ≤55 years age old, and female subgroups. Moreover, we performed a subgroup analysis based on the number of coronary artery lesions. The result showed that the rate of SA habit in the three-vessel disease group was the highest (p < 0.001). We applied Gensini score to evaluate the severity of coronary artery lesions (median Gensini score, 34) and divided all CAD patients into high Gensini score group (>34) and low Gensini score group (≤34), respectively. Compared with low Gensini score group, patients in high Gensini score group were more likely to have SA habit (p = 0.049). Conclusions There is a positive association of SA habit with CAD and its severity in Chinese adults.

Abstract
The present study aims to estimate the early-stage association of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic with sleep duration, 4 months after the initial outbreak, at a national level. Using the China Family Panel Studies in 2018 and its follow-up in 2020, 16,563 adult participants were analyzed in our study. The first wave transmissibility of the COVID-19 pandemic in mainland China was used as a quasi-natural experiment. The difference in difference method was employed to compare variations across participants interviewed before or after the pandemic and between groups from provinces with different COVID-19 severity. The study observed a decline in workday sleep duration among adults, regardless of their employment status. Specifically, working adults experienced a significant decrease in sleep duration on work days (-1.54, 95% confidence interval -2.16 to -0.92), alongside an increase on work-free days (2.41, 1.56-3.24), leading to a wider sleep discrepancy in sleep patterns (3.95, 3.31-4.59). Noteworthy, working-age adults (-2.00, -2.79 to -1.22) and males (-3.31, -4.31 to -2.30) exhibited greater sleep decreases on work days, whereas females exhibited a more pronounced disparity in sleep patterns (6.18, 4.73-7.63) between work and work-free days. The pandemic is significantly associated with prolonged changes in adults' sleep duration, including sleep decreases on work days and catch-up sleep on work-free days for working adults. To prepare for future global emergencies, the government may need to promote resilience to mitigate the pandemic's adverse impacts on the working population. Guaranteeing adequate sleep among working adults and reducing sleep debt should be prioritized in such efforts.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES The International Classification of Sleep Disorders categorized catathrenia as a respiratory disorder, but there are doubts whether episodes appear during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep or the non-rapid eye movement (NREM), their duration, and symptoms. The main objectives were to identify the most common features and relations of catathrenia. METHODS PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched according to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The Joanna Briggs Institute and the ROBINS-I tools were chosen to assess the risk of bias. RESULTS A total of 288 records were identified, 31 articles were included. The majority of the studies had a moderate risk of bias. 49.57% of episodes occurred during the NREM sleep, while 46% took place during REM. In 60.34% females, catathrenia was more common in the NREM, while in 59.26% of males was in REM sleep (p < 0.05). Females and obese individuals were found to have shorter episodes (p < 0.05). Age was inversely correlated with minimal episodes duration (r = - 0.34). The continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy was inversely correlated with the maximal episode duration (r = - 0.48). CONCLUSIONS Catathrenia occurs with similar frequency in both genders. The most frequent symptoms embraced groaning, awareness of disturbing bedpartners, and daytime somnolence-not confirmed by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale. The episodes occur more frequently in NREM than in REM sleep. Catathrenia may be considered as a sex-specific condition. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study focused on the association of the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) with the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS Data from two cycles of NHANES (2007-2010) were analyzed. Weighted logistic regression models were constructed to explore the relationship between DII and GDM. Stratified and subgroup analyses with adjustment for confounding factors were carried out to explore the association between DII and GDM. Mediation analysis was conducted to investigate potential mediating factors. RESULTS A total of 1,421 samples were analyzed. Based on the weighted logistic regression model, a strong positive association was observed between DII score and GDM risk (OR: 1.14, 95%CI: 1.02-1.26, P<0.01), suggesting that a pro-inflammatory diet could considerably increase the likelihood of GDM occurrence. This positive association was particularly significant in populations who consume alcohol (OR:1.17, 95%CI: 1.03-1.34, P<0.01) and have a body mass index>30 kg/m² (OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.01-1.38, P<0.05). Mediation analysis indicated that the white blood cell count mediated the association between DII and GDM, with an indirect effect of 0.000828 (95% CI: 0.000226-0.001347, P=0.001) and a mediation proportion of 8.01%. Specifically, the neutrophil count as a component contributed to this mediation effect (0.000774, 95% CI: 0.00014-0.001063, P=0.001), with a mediation proportion of 7.59%. CONCLUSION A pro-inflammatory diet in women elevates the likelihood of GDM occurrence. An anti-inflammatory dietary pattern may be a protective intervention for GDM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No previous systematic review or meta-analysis has evaluated the effect of optimal time-restricted eating (TRE) interventions on cardiovascular (CVD) risk factors. This meta-analysis aimed to illustrate the effect of a suitable TRE on CVD risk factors. METHODS A systematic review was performed to identify trials reporting the effects of TRE, relative to non-diet controls, on CVD risk factors in humans. A random-effects model was used to evaluate the effect sizes, and the results are expressed as the mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses were performed to examine the influence of the study population, age, duration of intervention, and baseline mean BMI on the CVD indexes. RESULTS TRE intervention significantly reduced systolic pressure (SBP) (MD: -3.45 mmHg; 95%CI:(-6.20,-0.71) mmHg; P = 0.01), body weight (MD: -1.63 Kg; 95%CI:(-2.09,-1.17) Kg; P<0.001), body mass index (BMI) (MD: -0.47 Kg/m2; 95% CI: (-0.72, -0.22) Kg/m2; P<0.001), and fat mass (MD: -0.98 Kg; 95% CI: (-1.51,-0.44) Kg; P<0.001), and reduced blood glucose levels. Based on the results of subgroup analysis, this meta-analysis identified the optimal TRE for BP (with a 6 h feeding window, last eating time point at 6-8 PM, and male participants with obesity and aged ≥ 45 years), obesity (with a 6 h feeding window, last eating time point at 6-8 PM, and female participants aged ≥ 45 years), lipids (with an 8 h feeding window, last eating time point at 6-8 PM, and male participants aged < 45 years), and glucose (with a 10-12 h feeding window, last eating time point before 6 PM, and female participants aged < 45years). CONCLUSIONS Relative to a non-diet control, TRE is effective for the improvement of CVD risks. Moreover, individual TRE interventions should be developed for different populations to achieve the most effective health improvement for CVD risk factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Many studies have examined links between sleep and blood pressure, with mixed findings, mostly using self-reported sleep data and cross-sectional designs. We examined whether actigraph-estimated sleep characteristics are associated with concurrent blood pressure or 5-year blood pressure change in a national cohort of older adults (National Social Life, Health and Aging Project), and whether these associations differ by hypertension medication use. METHODS Subjects were 669 older adults (62-90years), 471 with 5-year follow-up data. Sleep characteristics were duration (linear plus quadratic terms); sleep percentage; and categorical onset, midpoint, and waking times. Multivariable linear models adjusted for age, race, gender, obesity, smoking, daytime napping, and hypertension medication use. Interactions between sleep characteristics and hypertension medication were tested among the 401 subjects with consistent hypertension medication status over time. RESULTS We found U-shaped cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between duration and blood pressure, with shorter and longer sleep times associated with higher blood pressure. Later onset times were cross-sectionally associated with higher systolic blood pressure, while earlier onset times were longitudinally associated with systolic blood pressure increase. Midpoint, wake time, and sleep percentage were not significantly associated with blood pressure. Significant interaction terms suggested hypertension medications attenuated associations of sleep onset and wake time with diastolic blood pressure. CONCLUSIONS These results with actigraph-estimated parameters confirm some, but not all, associations reported from research based on self-reported sleep data. Our findings are consistent with recommended intermediate sleep durations for cardiovascular health and suggest hypertension medication use may attenuate some associations between sleep timing and blood pressure.

Abstract
Introduction Sleep is a vital biological, reparative, and restorative phenomenon, and poor sleep has a serious detrimental effect on health. Poor sleep quality is a serious problem as it adversely affects a person's ability to function physically and socially, as well as their potential for profession and quality of life. The degree of hypertension directly affects sleep quality, and poor sleep can exacerbate hypertensive symptoms. This study assesses hypertension patients' sleep quality in a rural health training centre in Chennai. Objectives 1. To study the prevalence of poor sleep quality among hypertensive patients. 2. To determine the association between selected socio-demographic factors and sleep quality among these patients. Materials and Methods Hypertensives attending the outpatient department of a rural health and training centre were selected in a systematic manner and administered a semi-structured interview schedule and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire followed by a basic clinical examination. Using the PSQI, they were categorised as having either poor or good sleep quality and the association between selected socio-demographic factors and sleep quality was assessed. Results Out of the 179 study participants, there were almost equal numbers of male and female participants. The mean age of participants was 57.80 years (standard deviation (SD) = 9.8 yrs.). Among the study participants, 44.13% had completed secondary level of school as an education qualification and 6.70% were illiterate. By the modified BG Prasad classification 2022, most of the study participants (34.08%) came under the class II socioeconomic classification. A large proportion (78.8%) of study participants had poor sleep quality. The difference in sleep quality was observed with respect to gender, socio-economic class, alcohol consumption and body mass index (BMI). Conclusion This observational study shows that individuals with hypertension suffer significantly from poor sleep. A poor quality of sleep was reported by 78.77% of the patients in this study. Statistically significant factors that influenced sleep quality were gender, alcohol consumption and BMI.

Abstract
Current studies have presented conflicting findings regarding the associations between light at night (LAN) exposure and the risk of overweight/obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Our study systematically summarized the evidence of the association between LAN exposure and the risk of overweight/obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. We searched five databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane) for observational studies published up to 1 August 2023. The pooled odds ratio (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated by random-effects models for the association. Eighteen studies were included in the meta-analysis. Compared with the group with the lowest level of LAN, the group with the highest level of LAN is associated with an increased risk of overweight/obesity (pooled OR = 1.19, 95%CI: 1.13-1.26), hypertension (pooled OR: 1.86, 95% CI:1.28-2.72), and diabetes (pooled OR = 1.21, 95%CI: 1.07-1.31). Our meta-analysis demonstrated LAN exposure is associated with increased risk of overweight/obesity, hypertension, and diabetes.

Abstract
Dietary components, including dietary fiber, unsaturated fatty acids, and polyphenols, along with meal timing and spacing, significantly affect the microbiota's capacity to produce various metabolites essential for quality sleep and overall health. This review explores the role of gut microbiota in regulating sleep through various metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids, tryptophan, serotonin, melatonin, and gamma-aminobutyric acid. A balanced diet rich in plant-based foods enhances the production of these sleep-regulating metabolites, potentially benefiting overall health. This review aims to investigate how dietary habits affect gut microbiota composition, the metabolites it produces, and the subsequent impact on sleep quality and related health conditions.

Abstract
Sleep is a vital process that impacts biological functions such as cell renewal, bone regeneration, and immune system support. Disrupted sleep can interrupt erythropoiesis, leading to fewer red blood cells, reduced haemoglobin concentration, and decreased haematocrit levels, potentially contributing to haematological disorders. This is particularly concerning for shift workers for example firefighters. While previous studies have explored sleep's adverse effects on various professions, research specific to firefighters is limited. This study investigates the relationship between sleep quality and haematological parameters among firefighters in Northeast Portugal. From a sample of 201 firefighters, variations in red blood cells, haemoglobin, and haematocrit values were linked to sleep quality. The study utilised non-parametric tests (Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney, Spearman's correlation) to explore the connection between sleep quality and haematological profile. The impact of covariates on haematological parameters was assessed using non-parametric ANCOVA (Quade's). A multiple regression analysis was employed to further understand how sleep quality and various confounding variables impact haematological levels. Findings suggest a negative link between sleep quality and haematological levels, meaning that as sleep quality deteriorates, there is a tendency for haematological levels to decrease, as indicated by Spearman's correlation (rRBC = -0.157, pRBC = 0.026; rHb = -0.158, pHb = 0.025; rHCT = -0.175, pHCT = 0.013). As observed in scientific literature, the correlation found suggests a possible inhibition of erythropoiesis, the process responsible for red blood cell production. Despite firefighters presenting a haematological profile within the reference range (RBC: 5.1 × 106/mm3 (SD ± 0.4), Hb: 15.6 g/dL (SD ± 1.3), 47% (SD ± 1.0), there is already an observable trend towards lower levels. The analysis of co-variables did not reveal a significant impact of sleep quality on haematological levels. In conclusion, this study underscores the importance of sleep quality in determining haematological parameters among firefighters. Future research should investigate the underlying mechanisms and long-term implications of poor sleep quality on firefighter health. Exploring interventions to enhance sleep quality is vital for evidence-based strategies promoting firefighter well-being.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder associated with cardiovascular risks. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of probable OSA and its relationship with cardiovascular risks and diseases focusing on age-stratified young adults (20-40 years) and older (>40 years). METHODS AND RESULTS The study used a cross-sectional design, analyzing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2013 and 2018, comprising 9887 community-dwelling adults aged ≥20 years. Probable OSA was determined on the basis of self-report of OSA-related symptoms (eg, snoring, gasping/breath cessation while sleeping). Cardiovascular risk factors, including hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and metabolic syndrome, were evaluated according to established guidelines. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) included self-reported heart conditions, including congestive heart failure, coronary heart disease, angina, heart attacks, and strokes. Individuals with probable OSA showed a significantly higher prevalence of health conditions, including hypertension (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR], 1.19; P<0.001), diabetes (aPR, 1.17; P: 0.01), metabolic syndrome (aPR, 1.14; P<0.001), heart attack (aPR, 1.63; P<0.01), stroke (aPR, 1.41; P: 0.03), and any CVD event (aPR, 1.36; P: 0.01) after adjusting for relevant factors. Young adults with probable OSA showed higher prevalence rates of any CVD events (aPR, 3.44; P<0.001), hypertension (aPR, 1.45; P<0.001), metabolic syndrome (aPR, 1.25; P<0.001), and angina (aPR, 10.39; P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS The study suggests early identification and management of OSA in individuals at risk for CVD. While cross-sectional, it emphasizes that health care providers should recognize OSA as significantly associated with CVDs and its precursor risks in young adults, stressing proactive care and screening to reduce CVD risk in this population.

Abstract
Sleep duration has been proposed as a potential and important modifiable risk factor, yet its precise relationship with hypertension among Asian adults remains unclear. This meta-analysis aims to elucidate the impact of short sleep duration on hypertension risk within the adult Asian population. A systematic search of databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect, was conducted to identify relevant studies published up to January 4, 2024. Eligible studies comprised observational cohort studies and cross-sectional studies that compared short sleep duration to normal sleep duration in relation to hypertension risk among Asian adults. The definitions for short and normal sleep durations were derived from the respective studies. The random effects model was utilized to pool effect estimates, and all statistical analyses were conducted using Review Manager 5.4 software (RevMan) (Cochrane Collaboration, Oxford, UK). Results from a systematic search obtained seven studies assessing sleep duration and hypertension risk in Asian populations. Based on a meta-analysis of six studies, short sleep duration is associated with a higher hypertension risk when compared to normal sleep duration (OR: 1.36; 95% CI: 1.13-1.64; p: 0.0010; I2: 75%). Subgroup analysis based on sex showed that the association is evident across males (OR: 1.12; 95% CI: 1.01-1.25; p: 0.03; I2: 64%) and females (OR: 1.22; 95% CI: 1.10-1.35; p: 0.0003; I2: 82%). In conclusion, based on the analyzed studies, short sleep duration is associated with a higher mild risk of hypertension, irrespective of sex. Thus, short sleep duration can be a modifiable risk factor that can be prevented to reduce the risk of hypertension. By incorporating sleep hygiene practices and promoting healthy sleep habits, significant improvement in cardiovascular health can be made, especially in hypertension risk at a population level. Further studies on the effect of sleep duration in different age populations should be conducted to confirm the impact of short sleep duration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor sleep quality is a global public health concern. This study aimed to identify the risk factors for sleep disorders and clarify their causal effects. METHODS Data were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and Mendelian randomization (MR)-Base databases. Baseline characteristics of individuals with and without sleep disorders were compared. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to calculate the effects of each variable on sleep disorders. Causal effects of blood lead levels and hypertension on sleep disorders were assessed using MR analysis. RESULTS In total, 3660 individuals were enrolled in the study. The prevalence of self-reported sleep disorders was 26.21%. Serum lead level, serum mercury level, serum retinol level, prevalence of hypertension, and daily vigorous work duration were significantly higher for those in the sleep disorders group than the control group. After adjusting for various covariates, the effects of serum lead and hypertension on sleep disorders were stable from logistic regression models 1-4. MR analysis showed that blood lead levels were causally related to the risk of sleep disorders (odds ratio (OR) = 1.09, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.01-1.17, P = 0.030). There was no causal link between elevated blood pressure and sleep disorders (OR = 0.99, 95% CI 0.94-1.04, P = 0.757). Goodness-of-fit tests and sensitivity analyses were used to verify the reliability of the results. CONCLUSIONS Blood lead is positively and causally associated with an increased risk of sleep disorders. These findings provide a novel perspective regarding sleep protection. Taking effective measures to reduce lead exposure may significantly improve sleep health.

Abstract
Vitamin C is an important micronutrient for human. Association between vitamin C and trouble sleeping was less studied. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the possible link between vitamin C in serum and trouble sleeping. The cross-sectional data was derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2017-2018). Trouble sleeping was measured by asking participants: "Have you ever told doctor had trouble sleeping". Responses to this question was "yes" or "no". vitamin C in serum was obtained by measuring the serum samples. We used multivariable binary logistic regressions to examine the possible link between vitamin C in serum and trouble sleeping, and then a subgroup analysis was performed. Moreover, the non-linear relationship between vitamin C in serum and trouble sleeping was further detected using a restricted cubic spline (RCS) model. A total of 3227 participants were included in the study. After adjusting all potential confounders, the results of multivariable logistic regression showed the significant negative association between vitamin C in serum and trouble sleeping(OR = 0.816; 95% CI:0.669 ~ 0.995). The significant inverse association was also found in female(OR = 0.713; 95% CI:0.546 ~ 0.931), age ≤ 65 years(OR = 0.773; 95% CI:0.600 ~ 0.996), and in participants with high cholesterol level(OR = 0.738; 95% CI:0.548 ~ 0.994). In addition, the RCS model demonstrated the significant non-linear relationship between vitamin C in serum and trouble sleeping (P value of nonlinear = 0.010). Our study demonstrates the significant negative association between vitamin C in serum and trouble sleeping.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Restorative sleep is critical in preventing hypertension and other chronic diseases. Limited research has explored the relationship between sleep quality and hypertension in Africa. This study investigated the association between sleep quality and blood pressure control among hypertensive patients in Southern Nigeria. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING A rural tertiary hospital in Southern Nigeria, April to June 2023. PARTICIPANTS 250 systematically selected hypertensive adults. Participants completed a validated semistructured interviewer-administered questionnaire to assess their sleep patterns, including sleep duration, self-reported trouble sleeping and a history of clinical diagnosis of sleep disorders. Sleep patterns were categorised as restorative (healthy) or non-restorative (unhealthy). The blood pressure of respondents was checked and categorised as controlled (<140/90 mm Hg) or uncontrolled (≥140/90 mm Hg). Data were analysed descriptively using SPSS V.24.0 OUTCOME MEASURES: Quality of sleep and blood pressure control. RESULTS Respondents had a mean age of 51.5±10.0 years, with the majority being female (156, 62.4%), married (135, 54.0%) and belonging to the Esan tribe (125, 50.0%). The prevalence of restorative sleep was 36%, while the blood pressure control rate was 23.6%. An association was found between restorative sleep and blood pressure control (adjusted OR =4.38; 95% CI=2.37-8.10; p<0.0001). Respondents aged ≥60 years had 3.5 times higher odds of experiencing non-restorative sleep than those aged ≤40 years (aOR=3.46; 95% CI=1.37-8.74; p=0.009). CONCLUSION The study found an association between poor quality sleep and poor blood pressure control. Incorporating sleep assessments and interventions into comprehensive hypertension management strategies could be explored as a possible approach to improve sleep quality and enhance blood pressure control. Abstract
Background Research on post-infarction insomnia, particularly short sleep duration following myocardial infarction (MI), remains limited. Currently, there are no existing guidelines or risk prediction models to assist physicians in managing or preventing short sleep duration or insomnia following MI. This study aims to develop a nomogram for predicting the risk of short sleep duration after MI. Methods We conducted a retrospective study on 1434 MI survivors aged 20 and above, utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database spanning from 2007 to 2018. Among them, 710 patients were assigned to the training group, while 707 patients were allocated to the testing group. We utilized logistic regression, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression, and the elastic network for variable selection. The stability and accuracy of the prediction model were assessed using receiver operator characteristics (ROCs) and calibration curves. Results We included five variables in the nomogram: age, poverty income ratio (PIR), body mass index (BMI), race, and depression. The ROC curves yielded values of 0.636 for the training group and 0.657 for the testing group, demonstrating the model's good prediction accuracy and robustness through a calibration curve test. Conclusions Our nomogram can effectively predict the likelihood of short sleep duration in MI survivors, providing valuable support for clinicians in preventing and managing post-MI short sleep duration.

Abstract
Hypertension has become a global health concern and is recognized as an important modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). There are very limited studies in India and worldwide focused on sleep problems, activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental ADL (IADL) and mobility limitations, and their discrete and combined effects on hypertension. Therefore, this study examined whether sleep problems are associated with hypertension, and whether the association is more pronounced among middle-aged and older adults with functional/mobility limitations. This study used data from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) wave 1, 2017-18, with a total sample of 59,951 adults aged 45 years and above. Log-binomial regression, and interaction terms were used to assess the relationship between sleep problems and hypertension, and the moderating effect of functional/mobility limitations. Respondents with sleep problems had a 29 % higher prevalence of hypertension [PR (prevalence ratio): 1.29; CI (confidence interval): 1.20-1.39]. Those with ADL and IADL limitations had 20 % [PR: 1.20; CI: 1.09-1.32] and 9 % [PR: 1.09; CI: 1.00-1.18] greater prevalence of hypertension. Interaction analysis revealed that individuals with ADL, IADL, and mobility limitations had 58 %, 52 %, and 45 % higher prevalence of hypertension, respectively, and was especially pronounced among women. Our findings highlight that improved sleep can reduce the prevalence of hypertension in middle-aged and older adults. Individuals with functional/mobility limitations may need additional care and support from their family members or the community, which could lower the prevalence of elevated blood pressure due to their sleep problems.

Abstract
Hypertension is one of the main risk factors related to cardiovascular mortality, being the levels of blood pressure (BP) related to a variety of personal, anthropometric, biochemical and psychological variables; however, the study evaluating the association of all these factors in systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in a sample of relatively healthy subjects has not been performed. The aim of the study was to determine the main variables associated with SBP and DPB in a sample of relatively healthy subjects. A total of 171 participants were included, in which personal, anthropometric, positive and negative psychological variables and biochemical variables were measured. We observed that men showed higher levels of SBP and DBP than women, with more differences for SBP. Among the biochemical factors and SBP, we found that albumin and monocytes were positively correlated with it, while potassium, phosphorus and eosinophils were negatively correlated with it. Additionally, schooling was a constant variable negatively correlated with SBP in all samples (global, men and women). Among psychological variables, we observed that emotional perception was negatively correlated with SBP in men's and women's samples, while autonomy was positively correlated with SBP in the men's sample; however, their association was less when compared with the personal and biochemical variables included in the multivariate model. With regard to DBP, we observed that the biochemical variables, hemoglobin, sodium, uric acid and glucose, were positively correlated with DBP in the global sample, while chloride and BUN were negatively correlated with it. In addition, many personal and behavioral variables, including BMI, age and smoking consumption frequency, also correlated with DBP in the global sample. In conclusion, BP is affected by different factors, and these affect each sex differently.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sex difference is commonly observed in hypertension. We aimed to assess sex differences in the associations of modifiable lifestyle and metabolic risk factors with risk of hypertension. DESIGN National cross-sectional population study. SETTING Data from the 2007 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. PARTICIPANTS 7087 adults aged ≥30 years without a prior history of hypertension. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES Odds ratios and population attributable fraction (PAF) of hypertension associated with 10 modifiable risk factors: five lifestyle risk factors (current smoking, excess alcohol intake, poor diet, physical inactivity, and unhealthy sleep), and five metabolic risk factors (obesity, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, hyperuricemia, and chronic kidney disease) in women versus men. RESULTS Compared with women, men had 84% increased risk of prevalence of hypertension. The sex difference in risk for hypertension is more evident in those aged <60 years (p for interaction <.001). For those aged <60 years the combination of lifestyle risk factors accounted for a PAF of 27.2% in men and 48.8% in women, and the combination of metabolic risk factors accounted for a PAF similarly in men (37.4%) and women (38.2%). For those aged ≥60 years, the PAF of lifestyle risk factors was similar between men and women and the metabolic risk factors accounted for a greater proportion in women (33.0% vs. 14.5% in men). CONCLUSIONS Sex differences may exist in the relation and attribution of lifestyle and metabolic risk factors to hypertension, which may have implications for implementing sex-specific strategies to prevent hypertension.

Abstract
The relationships between selected upper airway-related symptoms (speech disturbances, voice disorders, cough, and breathing abnormalities) and mental illness and sleep disorders have been previously demonstrated. However, these relationships have not been compared in a single study with consideration of potential confounding variables. The current research incorporates a descriptive study design of medical claims data for employees (~21,362 per year 2017-2021) with corporate insurance to evaluate the strength of these relationships, adjusting for demographic variables and other important confounders. The upper airway-related symptoms are each significantly and positively associated with several mental illnesses and sleep disorders, after adjusting for demographic and other potential confounders. The rate of any mental illness is 138% (95% CI 93-195%) higher for speech disturbances, 55% (95% CI 28-88%) higher for voice disorders, 28% (95% CI 22-34%) higher for cough, and 58% (95% CI 50-66%) higher for breathing abnormalities, after adjustment for the confounding variables. Confounding had significant effects on the rate ratios involving cough and breathing abnormalities. The rate of any sleep disorder is 78% (95% CI 34-136%) higher for speech disturbances, 52% (95% CI 21-89%) higher for voice disorders, 34% (95% CI 27-41%) higher for cough, and 172% (95% CI 161-184%) higher for breathing abnormalities, after adjustment for the confounding variables. Confounding had significant effects on each of the upper airway-related symptoms. Rates of mental illness and sleep disorders are positively associated with the number of claims filed for each of the upper airway-related symptoms. The comorbid nature of these conditions should guide clinicians in providing more effective treatment plans that ultimately yield the best outcome for patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is linked to hearing loss (HL). Another sleep characteristics, sleep duration might also be associated with HL, but prior evidence is limited. This study is aimed to investigate the association between sleep duration and hearing level in the adult US population. METHODS In total, a sample of 2777 individuals aged 20-69 years from the 2015-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey cycle (NHANES, 2015-2016) were investigated in this study. Self-reported sleep duration data was classified into the short-sleep (< 7 h), normal-sleep (7-9 h), and long-sleep (> 9 h) group. Multivariable linear regression models between sleep duration and hearing threshold shifts were estimated. Interactions between sleep duration and age, gender, race, OSA were also considered, and the study population was stratified by age, gender, race, and OSA to analyze the potential disparities among adults in different subgroups. RESULTS Long-sleep duration was positively associated with speech- and high-frequency pure-tone average (PTA) thresholds with statistical significance (β = 1.31, 95%CI: 0.10, 2.53, P = 0.0347, and β = 2.71, 95%CI: 0.69, 4.74, P = 0.0087, respectively). When stratified by age, short sleep duration was positively associated with low-, and speech-frequency PTAs (P = 0.0140 and 0.0225, respectively) for adults aged 40-59 years, and long-sleep duration was positively associated with low-, and speech-frequency PTAs (P = 0.0495 and 0.0142, respectively) for adults aged 60-69 years with statistical significance. There was statistically significant interaction between OSA and sleep duration on speech-frequency PTA, but no significant interaction between either gender or race with sleep duration on hearing thresholds among US adults. CONCLUSION Short/long sleep durations are associated with worse hearing level comparing to sleep 7-9 h in the American adults. Nonoptimal sleep duration may be a potential risk factor for HL.

Abstract
Aims To examine the associations of sleep duration and changes in BMI with the onset of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Materials and methods 2,959 participants with type 2 diabetes were divided into three groups based on sleep duration: short (<7 h/day), intermediate (7-9 h/day), or long (>9 h/day). Changes in BMI during follow-up were trisected into loss, stable, or gain groups. DKD was defined as either the urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (UACR) ≥ 3.39 mg/mmol or the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73m², or both. Cox regression models were used to assess hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results During a mean follow-up of 2.3 years, DKD occurred in 613 participants (20.7%). A J-shaped curve was observed between sleep duration and DKD. Compared to intermediate sleep duration, long sleep duration was associated with higher risks of DKD (HR 1.47; 95% CI: 1.19-1.81). In the joint analyses, compared to participants with intermediate sleep duration and stable BMI, long sleep duration with BMI gain had the highest risks of DKD (HR 2.04; 95% CI: 1.48-2.83). In contrast, short or intermediate sleep duration accompanied by decrease in BMI was associated with a reduced risk of DKD, with HRs of 0.50 (95% CI: 0.31-0.82) and 0.61 (95% CI:0.47-0.80), respectively. Conclusions Long sleep duration is significantly associated with an increased risk of DKD, which is further amplified by obesity or BMI gain. These findings suggest that both proper sleep duration and weight control are essential to preventing DKD.

Abstract
There is growing evidence that the prevalence of high blood pressure is increasing, and it may have serious consequences. However, research on the prevalence and influencing factors of high blood pressure among primary and secondary school students is still relatively scarce. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of high blood pressure among primary and secondary school students in Shenyang, in order to provide scientific evidence for the prevention and management of this disease. From April to May 2020, 4892 students aged 7 to 17 years were selected as the survey subjects, and on-site physical measurements and questionnaire surveys were conducted. The prevalence of high blood pressure was described. Restricted cubic spline was used to analyze the dose-response relationship between sleep duration, BMI and the risk of high blood pressure. Logistic regression was used to analyze the risk factors. Multiplicative and additive models were used to analyze the interaction between sleep duration and BMI. The results showed that the overall prevalence of high blood pressure among students aged 7 to 17 years in Shenyang was 9.9%, with a higher prevalence in females than males (12.1% vs 7.9%) and in urban areas than suburban areas (11.8% vs 7.7%). The prevalence was lowest in students with normal weight (8.3%) and highest in those who were obese (12.5%). The prevalence fluctuated to some extent among different age groups, but overall, it increased with age, with the lowest prevalence in primary school students (7.0%), 11.4% in mild school students, and the highest prevalence of 14.3% in high school students. Multivariable analysis showed that the risk of high blood pressure in female students was 1.90 times higher than that in male students (95% CI: 1.54-2.35), and the risk in suburban areas was 0.65 times lower than that in urban areas (95% CI: 0.52-0.81). Students with a BMI ≥ 21 kg/m2 had a 1.58 times higher risk than those with a BMI < 21 kg/m2(95% CI: 1.28-1.96), while those with a sleep time ≥ 8 hours had a 0.80 times lower risk than those with a sleep time < 8 hours (95% CI: 0.65-0.99). Exercise can significantly reduce the risk of high blood pressure, while using electronic devices for more than 0.5 hours significantly increases the risk of high blood pressure. BMI and sleep duration have no interaction effect on the risk of high blood pressure. To reduce the prevalence of high blood pressure, students should reduce the use of electronic devices, ensure adequate exercise, maintain a reasonable weight, and ensure sufficient sleep.

Abstract
Background Global burden of hypertension among young people continues to increase. There have been many studies examining the effect of aerobic and muscle-strengthening physical activity on blood pressure, many of them didn't consider interdependence between them. Conflicting results of health-related fitness, particularly handgrip strength, as intermediate outcomes of muscle-strengthening physical activity on blood pressure also emerged. This research will carry out a mediation-moderation analysis to find out the relationship between muscle strengthening physical activity and blood pressure among young adults by considering health-related fitness and 24-hour movement behavior. Methods A cross-sectional study among 221 Indonesian young adults attending a physical activity intervention collected participant's muscle-strengthening physical activity, and 24 h movement behavior, including aerobic physical activity, sedentary and sleep behavior, and mental well-being using validated questionnaires. Mediation and moderation analyses were conducted using Process Macro model 10 on SPSS 25 to investigate the association of muscle-strengthening physical activity on blood pressure, with gender and blood pressure as moderator, mediators consist of handgrip strength, muscle mass percentage and cardiorespiratory fitness. A subgroup analysis was conducted based on participant's cardiorespiratory fitness level. Results Volume of muscle-strengthening physical activities in a week have a direct association with systolic blood pressure among prehypertensive male with an effect of 0,00989359 (95% CI 0,0046488 to 0,00336478). Considering its volume as mediator, the frequency of muscle-strengthening physical activity contributed to a significant direct effect on diastolic blood pressure in both genders, but the duration of MSPA has a significant direct effect on systolic blood pressure in male subjects. There is no component of physical fitness that provides a significant mediating effect. After a subgroup analysis, the relationship between MSPA Volume and blood pressure is not significant for individuals with a high level of cardiorespiratory fitness. Conclusions This study shows that increased participation in muscle strengthening physical activity, especially in subject with low cardiorespiratory fitness, could increase blood pressure in prehypertensive young adult male population without mediation by physical fitness. Further research is needed to investigate other mechanisms that influence this relationship.

Abstract
Increasing evidence suggests a correlation between changes in the composition of gut microbiota and sleep-related phenotypes. However, it remains uncertain whether these associations indicate a causal relationship. The genome-wide association study summary statistics data of gut microbiota (n = 18,340) was downloaded from the MiBioGen consortium and the data of sleep-related phenotypes were derived from the UK Biobank, the Medical Research Council-Integrative Epidemiology Unit, Jones SE, the FinnGen consortium. To test and estimate the causal effect of gut microbiota on sleep traits, a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach using multiple methods was conducted. A series of sensitive analyses, such as horizontal pleiotropy analysis, heterogeneity test, MR Steiger directionality test and "leave-one-out" analysis as well as reverse MR analysis, were conducted to assess the robustness of MR results. The genus Anaerofilum has a negative causal effect on getting up in the morning (odd ratio = 0.977, 95% confidence interval: 0.965-0.988, p = 7.28 × 10-5). A higher abundance of order Enterobacteriales and family Enterobacteriaceae contributed to becoming an "evening person". Six and two taxa were causally associated with longer and shorter sleep duration, respectively. Specifically, two SCFA-produced genera including Lachnospiraceae UCG004 (odd ratio = 1.029, 95% confidence interval = 1.012-1.046, p = 6.11 × 10-4) and Odoribacter contribute to extending sleep duration. Two obesity-related genera such as Ruminococcus torques (odd ratio = 1.024, 95% confidence interval: 1.011-1.036, p = 1.74 × 10-4) and Senegalimassilia were found to be increased and decreased risk of snoring, respectively. In addition, we found two risk taxa of insomnia such as the order Selenomonadales and one of its classes called Negativicutes. All of the sensitive analysis and reverse MR analysis results indicated that our MR results were robust. Our study revealed the causal effect of gut microbiota on sleep and identified causal risk and protective taxa for chronotype, sleep duration, snoring and insomnia, which has the potential to provide new perspectives for future mechanistic and clinical investigations of microbiota-mediated sleep abnormal patterns and provide clues for developing potential microbiota-based intervention strategies for sleep-related conditions.

Abstract
Epidemiologic studies have demonstrated that short sleep duration is associated with an increased risk of cardio-metabolic health outcomes including cardiovascular disease mortality, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome. Experimental sleep restriction studies have sought to explain these findings. This review describes the main evidence of these associations and possible mechanisms explaining them. Whether sleep extension reverses these now widely acknowledged adverse health effects and the feasibility of implementing such strategies on a public health level is discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a common mental health problem among veterans, with high mortality. Despite the numerous conducted investigations, the prediction and identification of risk factors for depression are still severely limited. This study used a deep learning algorithm to identify depression in veterans and its factors associated with clinical manifestations. METHODS Our data originated from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2018). A dataset of 2,546 veterans was identified using deep learning and five traditional machine learning algorithms with 10-fold cross-validation. Model performance was assessed by examining the area under the subject operating characteristic curve (AUC), accuracy, recall, specificity, precision, and F1 score. RESULTS Deep learning had the highest AUC (0.891, 95%CI 0.869-0.914) and specificity (0.906) in identifying depression in veterans. Further study on depression among veterans of different ages showed that the AUC values for deep learning were 0.929 (95%CI 0.904-0.955) in the middle-aged group and 0.924(95%CI 0.900-0.948) in the older age group. In addition to general health conditions, sleep difficulties, memory impairment, work incapacity, income, BMI, and chronic diseases, factors such as vitamins E and C, and palmitic acid were also identified as important influencing factors. CONCLUSIONS Compared with traditional machine learning methods, deep learning algorithms achieved optimal performance, making it conducive for identifying depression and its risk factors among veterans.

Abstract
Background Inflammation has been linked to the development of coronary heart disease (CHD). The systemic immune inflammation index (SII) is a useful biomarker of systemic inflammation. Our study aimed to explore the correlation between SII and CHD. Methods We conducted a multivariate logistic regression analysis, smoothing curve fitting, and segmented model comparison on 15,905 participants with a CHD prevalence of 3.31% and a mean age of 46.97 years. Results Adjusting for gender, age, and race, we found a negative association between SII and CHD [odds ratio (OR) 0.66; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.48, 0.90]. There was an inverse trend where increasing SII was associated with decreasing odds of CHD (p for trend = 0.0017). After further adjustment, the association was strengthened, with a similar trend (p for trend = 0.0639). Smoothing curve fitting demonstrated a gender-specific association between SII and CHD. Conclusions Our findings suggest that higher SII values may be associated with a higher incidence of CHD, which varies by gender. SII may be a cost-effective and convenient method to detect CHD. Further studies are needed to confirm the causality of these findings in a larger prospective cohort.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine whether longitudinal trajectories of nighttime sleep duration and daytime napping duration are related to subsequent multimorbidity risk. To explore whether daytime napping can compensate for negative effects of short nighttime sleep. METHODS The current study included 5262 participants from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Self-reported nighttime sleep duration and daytime napping duration were collected from 2011 to 2015. The 4-year sleep duration trajectories were conducted by group-based trajectory modeling. The 14 medical conditions were defined by self-reported physician diagnoses. Multimorbidity was diagnosed as participants with 2 or more of the 14 chronic diseases after 2015. Associations between sleep trajectories and multimorbidity were assessed by Cox regression models. RESULTS During 6.69 years of follow-up, we observed multimorbidity in 785 participants. Three nighttime sleep duration trajectories and three daytime napping duration trajectories were identified. Participants with persistent short nighttime sleep duration trajectory had the higher risk of multimorbidity (hazard ratio = 1.37, 95% confidence interval: 1.06-1.77), compared with those with persistent recommended nighttime sleep duration trajectory. Participants with persistent short nighttime sleep duration and persistent seldom daytime napping duration had the highest risk of multimorbidity (hazard ratio = 1.69, 95% confidence interval: 1.16-2.46). CONCLUSIONS In this study, persistent short nighttime sleep duration trajectory was associated with subsequent multimorbidity risk. Daytime napping could compensate for the risk of insufficient night sleep.

Abstract
Flavonoids possess the latent ability to protect against sleep disorders. We examined the correlation between daily flavonoid intake and sleep duration, and sleep disorders. We enrolled 8216 participants aged ≥ 20 from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2007-2010), carrying out a cross-sectional study. Flavonoid intake was collected by dietary intake interview recalls. Logistic regression was utilized to evaluate the association between flavonoid intake sleep duration, and sleep disorders. We used subgroup and interaction analysis to explore differences between subgroups. When adjusting covariates in model 2, anthocyanidins, flavan-3-ols, flavones, flavonols, and the sum of flavonoids were considerably related to insufficient sleep duration (odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval (CI)); 0.83 (0.72, 0.95); 0.91 (0.83, 0.98); 0.63 (0.41, 0.98); 0.78 (0.64, 0.94); 0.85 (0.76, 0.95), respectively); the converse association was observed between flavanones, and flavones and the risk of sleep disorders (OR (95% CI); 0.85 (0.77, 0.95); 0.61 (0.41, 0.90), respectively). In relation to insufficient sleep, there were statistically significant interactions between flavonoid consumption and race/ethnicity, and education level. In relation to insufficient sleep, there were statistically significant interactions between flavonoid consumption and working status. In this study, we found that certain flavonoids were linked to increased sleep duration and a lower risk of sleep problems. Our research indicated that flavonoids might be a preventive factor for sleep disorders.

Abstract
Background Study has shown that sarcopenia increases the risk of poor outcomes in patients with hypertension. Inflammation is one of the important reasons for the occurrence and development of sarcopenia. Regulating systemic inflammation may be a potential intervention for sarcopenia in hypertensive patients. Diet is one of the important measures to improve systemic inflammation. The dietary inflammatory index (DII) is a tool designed to assess the inflammatory potential of the diet, the association between DII and sarcopenia in hypertensive patients is unclear. Objective To explore the relationship between the DII and sarcopenia in patients with hypertension. Method Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2006 and 2011-2018. A total of 7,829 participants were evaluated. Participants were divided into four groups based on the quartile of the DII: Q1 group (n = 1,958), Q2 group (n = 1,956), Q3 group (n = 1,958) and Q4 group (n = 1,957). The relationship between the DII and sarcopenia was assessed by logistic regression analysis based on the NHANES recommended weights. Result The DII was significantly associated with sarcopenia in patients with hypertension. After full adjustment, patients with higher DII (OR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.13-1.32, p < 0.001) have a higher risk of sarcopenia. Compared with Q1 group, the group with higher DII levels had a higher risk of sarcopenia (Q2: OR: 1.23, 95%CI: 0.89-1.72, p = 0.209; Q3: OR: 1.68, 95%CI: 1.20-2.35, p = 0.003; Q4: OR: 2.43, 95%CI: 1.74-3.39, p < 0.001). Conclusion High DII is associated with an increased risk of sarcopenia in hypertensive patients. The higher the level of DII, the higher the risk of sarcopenia in hypertensive patients.

Abstract
The public health significance of hypertension is increasing in low- and middle-income countries. However, there is limited epidemiological evidence in Ethiopia. We assessed the prevalence of hypertension and explored its predictors among adults in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from April to May 2021 among randomly selected adults aged 18-64 years. A face-to-face interview using an adapted STEPwise Approach to NCD Risk Factor Surveillance (STEPS) questionnaire was conducted. Multilevel mixed-effects logistic regression model was fitted to determine factors associated with hypertension. The sample consisted of a total of 600 adults (mean age: 31.2 ± 11.4 years, 51.7% women). The overall age-standardized prevalence of hypertension was 22.1% and 47.8% according to the Seventh Joint National Commission (JNC7) and the 2017 American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines, respectively. About 25.6% were newly diagnosed with hypertension. The age groups of 40-54 years (AOR = 8.97; 95% CI: 2.35,34.23), and 55-64 years (AOR = 19.28; 95% CI: 3.96,93.83) as compared to the 18-24 age group, male sex (AOR = 2.90; 95% CI: 1.22,6.87), obesity (AOR = 1.92; 95% CI: 1.02,3.59), abdominal obesity (AOR = 4.26; 95% CI: 1.42,12.81), and very poor sleep quality (AOR = 3.35; 95% CI: 1.15,9.78) were independent predictors of hypertension. This study revealed that the burden of hypertension among adults is very high. Hypertension is independently associated with older age group, male sex, obesity, abdominal obesity, and poor sleep quality. Therefore, the study highlights the need to develop regular blood pressure surveillance programs, weight loss intervention, and improvement of sleep quality.

Abstract
Objective: Self-reported sleep disturbance is common but its association with mortality has rarely been investigated. Methods: This prospective cohort analysis included 41,257 participants enrolled in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2018. Self-reported sleep disturbance in the present study refers to the patients who have ever consulted doctors or other professionals for trouble sleeping. Univariate and multivariate survey-weighted Cox proportional hazards models were used to evaluate the association of self-reported sleep disturbance with all-cause and disease-specific mortality. Results: Approximately 27.0% of US adults were estimated to have self-reported sleep disturbance. After adjusting for all sociodemographic variables, health behavioral factors, and common comorbidities, participants with self-reported sleep disturbance tend to have higher all-cause mortality risk with a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.17 (95% CI, 1.04-1.32) and chronic lower respiratory disease mortality risk (HR, 1.88; 95% CI, 1.26-2.80), but not cardiovascular disease mortality risk (HR, 1.19; 95% CI, 0.96-1.46) and cancer mortality risk (HR, 1.10; 95% CI, 0.90-1.35). Conclusion: Self-reported sleep disturbance could be associated with higher mortality in adults, and may need to be paid more attention in public health management.

Abstract
Sleep problems are common in modern society and may be related to environmental chemicals. The objective of this study is to investigate the association between exposure to personal care and consumer product chemicals (PCCPCs) and sleep-related disorders. Nationally representative data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were used in this study (N=2415). Sleep-related variables, including sleep duration, snoring, and self-reported sleep problems, were included as outcome variables to assess sleep quality. Urinary PCCPC concentrations were used to assess the association of PCCPCs with sleep problems and adjusted for variables similar to those used in related studies. PCCPC levels were analysed as quartiles. Multivariate logistic regression and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression were used to analyse the association of urinary PCCPCs with sleep problems. Nine of the 12 kinds of PCCPCs with a detection rate greater than 50% were included in our study. Specifically, the concentrations of bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol F (BPF), methyl paraben (MP) and triclosan (TCS) were significantly related to insufficient sleep. Based on the WQS model, combined exposure to PCCPCs was also significantly related to insufficient sleep; TCS, BPA, and MP were the compounds with the greatest impact regarding combined exposure. A variety of PCCPCs were associated with insufficient sleep in participants but were not significantly associated with the other sleep problems reported in the NHANES. As poor quality sleep is associated with multiple adverse health outcomes, our study provides insight into the health risks of PCCPC exposure.

Effects of Preoperative Sleep Disorders on Anesthesia Recovery and Postoperative Pain in Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic Gynecological Surgery under General Anesthesia. Abstract
Sleep disorder dramatically affects people's physical and mental health. Here, we investigated the effect of preoperative sleep disorders on anesthesia recovery and postoperative pain in patients undergoing laparoscopic gynecological surgery under general anesthesia. 120 patients who underwent elective laparoscopic gynecological surgery under general anesthesia in Taizhou Central Hospital from November 2021 to March 2022 were included. According to the score of the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), the participating patients were divided into four groups: control group (control group), mild sleep disorder group A (group A), moderate sleep disorder group B (group B), and severe sleep disorder group C (group C), with 30 patients in each group. The changes of mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) at different time points, operation time, anesthesia time, extubation time, the time when Aldrete score reached 10 points, visual analog score (VAS) serum interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-10 (IL-10), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were compared among different groups. Our study demonstrated that there were no significant differences in MAP and HR among the four groups at the same time points (all P > 0.05). Significant differences in the time of extubation and Aldrete score reaching 10 points had been found among the four groups (all P < 0.001), indicating more sleep disorder induced longer extubation and recovery time. There were significant differences in VAS scores among the four groups at both different and the same time points (all P < 0.001), suggesting more sleep disorders induced more pain in the sufferers. Serum IL-6 levels were significantly higher in the three sleep disorder groups than the control group at 6 h and 24 h after the operation (all P < 0.05), while group C has the highest IL-6 levels as compared to the other group (P = 0.09 and P < 0.001, respectively). At 6 h after operation, serum levels of TNF-α in group C were significantly higher than in the control group (P = 0.044), but no significant differences were found in the other two groups (all P > 0.05). Positive correlation with preoperative PSQI score has been found with the times of extubation, the time of Aldrete score reaching 10 points, the VAS at 1 h, 6 h, and 24 h after operation, the level of serum IL-6 at 1 day before operation and 6 h and 24 h after operation, and the TNF-α at 6 h and 24 h after operation (all P < 0.001). The present study showed that the degree of preoperative sleep disorders could affect the quality of postoperative awakening and pain of patients undergoing laparoscopic gynecological surgery under general anesthesia, which might be associated with the aggravation of inflammatory reactions in the body.

Abstract
Objectives Evidence has shown that nocturnal sleep duration is associated with the risk of hyperuricemia, yet the findings are inconsistent. Thus, we aimed at exploring the association between nocturnal sleep duration and the risk of hyperuricemia in Chinese government employees. Methods A total of 10,321 government employees aged 20-60 years were collected from the Cohort Study on Chronic Diseases among Government Employees in Hunan Province, China. Sleep duration was self-reported. And serum uric acid levels >420 μmol/L in men and >360 μmol/L in women were considered hyperuricemia. The association between nocturnal sleep duration and hyperuricemia risk was examined utilizing multivariate logistic regression models. To further examine the connection between nocturnal sleep duration and serum uric acid levels, multiple linear regression analyses were utilized. Results The prevalence of hyperuricemia was 17.2%. The results of logistic regression demonstrated that, in contrast to participants whose sleep duration was 7-8 h, those who slept for <7 h had an elevated risk of hyperuricemia (OR = 1.343, 95%CI: 1.126, 1.601). Further stratified analysis revealed that this association was still observed in those without obesity (OR = 1.365; 95%CI: 1.127, 1.655), hypertension (OR = 1.290, 95%CI: 1.054, 1.578), or diabetes mellitus (OR = 1.361, 95%CI: 1.136, 1.631). Multiple linear regression showed that shorter sleep duration (< 7 h) was positively correlated with serum uric acid levels. In comparison to individuals who slept for 7-8 h, those with sleep duration of fewer than 7 h had serum uric acid levels that were 7.231 μmol/L (95% CI: 2.875, 11.588) higher. Conclusion Short nocturnal sleep duration (< 7 h) was associated with a higher risk of hyperuricemia, especially in participants without obesity, hypertension, or diabetes mellitus. Besides, short nocturnal sleep duration was related to greater uric acid levels.

Abstract
Background Smoking has been widely reported to have a significant relationship with hypertension, but the past description of this relationship has not been uniform. In addition, there has been a lack of research to discuss the impact of environmental exposure on the relationship between smoking and hypertension. Therefore, this study estimates the association between smoking and hypertension in middle aged and elderly people in China under different PM2.5 (fine particulate matter) concentrations and the green space exposure conditions. Methods Individual sample data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study in 2018 and the long-term average exposure concentration of fine particles and green space exposure for all participants were used with a multilevel binary logistic mixed effects model. Adjustments were made for sociodemographic characteristics and other health behaviors including drinking, physical activity, and social activity. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and PM2.5 concentration stratification were assigned with the median of the population exposure concentration as the dividing line, and the dual environmental factor stratification was assigned in combination with the two types of environmental exposure. The analysis was also stratified using age groups. Results A total of 10,600 participants over the age of 45 were included in the study. The effects of smoking on hypertension were diverse under different environmental exposure conditions. There was a significant relationship between smoking behavior and hypertension in the Low-NDVI group, and the effect value of this relationship was significantly different from that in the High-NDVI group. Furthermore, for respondents exposed to low green spaces and high PM2.5 environments at the same time (Low-NDVI/High-PM2.5 group), their smoking behavior may lead to an increase in the risk of hypertension. In addition, the risk of hypertension caused by smoking in the middle-aged (45-64) was significant under low green space exposure, but the effect difference between the different age groups was not significant. Conclusions The relationship between smoking and hypertension was different under different environmental exposure conditions. Exposure to low green spaces may strengthen the association between smoking and hypertension risk. When participants were exposed to both low green spaces and high PM2.5 concentrations, the risk of hypertension caused by smoking was significantly higher than that of those who were exposed to high green spaces and low PM2.5 concentrations.

Abstract
Epidemiologic studies have demonstrated that short sleep duration is associated with an increased risk of cardio-metabolic health outcomes including cardiovascular disease mortality, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome. Experimental sleep restriction studies have sought to explain these findings. This review describes the main evidence of these associations and possible mechanisms explaining them. Whether sleep extension reverses these now widely acknowledged adverse health effects and the feasibility of implementing such strategies on a public health level is discussed.
