Abstract
Electric scooters (e-scooters) are becoming increasingly popular amongst the public. Oxfordshire is included as part of the government led e-scooter trial. This study was designed to evaluate maxillofacial injuries occurring following e-scooter accidents. A single-centre retrospective study was conducted from October 2022 to September 2023 reviewing all e-scooter-related maxillofacial injuries which presented to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. During the study period, forty-nine patients (mean [range] age 28 [13-48] years; 32 [65.3%] male) suffered maxillofacial injuries from riding an e-scooter. Twenty patients (40.8%) were under the influence of alcohol and no individual was recorded to have worn a helmet at the time the injury occurred. Ten patients (20.4%) suffered a facial fracture (two mandibular fractures, three zygomatic-orbital fractures, one nasal fracture, and four patients with multiple fractures involving the sphenoid, zygomatic-orbital, and maxillary sinus). Four (40%) of these facial fractures required surgical management. This included one patient with an orbital floor fracture and an associated inferior rectus entrapment, which is a surgical emergency. Thirty-three patients (67.3%) sustained facial lacerations and nine patients (18.4%) sustained dental trauma. Maxillofacial injuries occurring from e-scooter injuries are significant and pose a notable risk to safety. Our study highlights poor compliance and emphasises the need to improve safety through public education, focussing on sobriety. Considerations should be given to speed limitations, safety clothing, e-scooter training, and whether helmets should be mandatory. The Oxfordshire trial is due to end in May 2026 and our results can inform and influence future legislation.

Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to determine the impact of standing electric scooters on maxillofacial on the Italian territory. Methods: The authors analyzed the epidemiology of the injuries to define electric mobility's impact on maxillofacial surgery practice. For this retrospective cohort study, data were collected by unifying the standing e-scooter-related fractures database from 10 Italian maxillofacial surgery departments. The reference period considered was from January 2020 to December 2023. The main data considered included age, gender, type of access, time slot of admission, type of admission, alcohol level, helmet use, dynamics of the accident, and area of the fracture. Results: A total of 79 patients were enrolled. The average age of the participants was approximately 31 years. The blood alcohol level was found to be above the Italian norm in 15 cases (19%). Only one patient wore a helmet. The most affected facial third was the middle one with 36 cases (45.5%), followed by the lower one (31, 39.3%). The most recurrent patterns were fractures of the orbito-malar-zygomatic complex (15, 19%), followed by multifocal (bifocal, trifocal) fractures of the mandible (14, 17.5%). Conclusions: This study demonstrated how maxillofacial fractures related to the use of electric scooters are associated with complex patterns, associated with a high rate of post-surgical aftermaths.

Abstract
With the increasing use of sustainable energy sources, the electric scooter has become a widely used vehicle. The aim of the study is to analyse the types of facial fracture related to road traffic accidents to outline the need for dedicated road rules. An observational, retrospective, multicentre study was carried out at the Maxillofacial Surgery Units of six Italian hospitals. Fifty patients (mean age was 34.76 years) from January 2020 to January 2024 were enrolled. The severity of trauma was evaluated by the Facial Injury Severity Scale (FISS) by Bagheri et al. Most of the accidents occurred during the day and the weekend in spring or summer; 24 drivers collided with infrastructures or pedestrians, while 26 involved other vehicles. A total of 33 vehicles were rented, and 17 were privately owned. A total of 43 subjects were not wearing helmets, five patients were drunk, and three patients took drugs. In order of frequency, the facial fractures involved: zygomatico-maxillary-orbital complex (ZMOC) (n = 16), mandibular condyle (n = 13), nasal bone (n = 11), orbit floor (n = 8), and mandibular body (n = 7). Fractures such as Le Fort I (n = 4), naso-orbito-ethmoidal NOE (n = 4) and mandibular ramus (n = 4) were less common. Other types of facial fracture were rare. Thirty patients reported multiple facial fractures. The vast majority of the cases showed a low severity grade FISS score. Fifteen patients suffered polytrauma. The mean hospitalisation time was 8.3 days. As accidents with electric scooters are increasing, it is important to characterise the most frequent facial fractures to improve patient management and encourage the introduction of new road rules.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe the incidence of head and neck trauma related to electric bicycles and to characterize head and neck injury patterns seen in electric bicycle (eBike) users versus pedal bicyclists in the United States. METHODS The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was queried from 2009 to 2020 for patients with head and neck injuries related to electric and pedal bicycles. Extracted data included patient demographics, injury patterns, hospital admission, and helmet use. Univariate chi-squared analyses were performed to compare demographics and injury patterns between bicycle groups. Effect sizes were reported with Cramer V values (V). RESULTS The incidence of eBike-related head and neck injuries increased from 2993 in 2009 to 9916 in 2020. Compared to pedal bicycle users, eBike users were more likely to have head injuries (60.4% vs. 52.0%) and fractures (10.9% vs. 6.0%), and were more likely to require hospitalization (20.6% vs. 10.4%). The effect size of helmet use was significantly greater in eBike users compared to pedal bicyclists when examining distributions of age group (V = 0.203 vs. V = 0.079), injury location (V = 0.220 vs. V = 0.082), and injury type (V = 0.162 vs. V = 0.059). Helmeted injuries in eBike users more commonly involved neck injuries and sprains, rather than head injuries and fractures. CONCLUSION Head and neck trauma related to eBike use is increasing in the United States. Injury patterns and admission rates reflect greater injury severity in eBike users compared to pedal bicyclists. Helmet use may be particularly beneficial in mitigating head and neck injury in eBike users. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE 3 Laryngoscope, 134:2734-2740, 2024.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of injuries caused by electric bicycles (E-bikes) and powered scooters (P-scooters) continues to increase. Data on the severity of those injuries is conflicting. The purpose of this study was to explore secular trends in the incidence and severity characteristics of patients following E-bike and P-scooter injuries and predictors for major trauma. METHODS A retrospective cohort study of patients aged ≥16 years following E-bike and P-scooter injuries was performed at a level 1-trauma center between 2017 and 2022. We explored secular trends in major trauma cases (primary outcome), emergency department (ED) visits, hospitalizations, and surgical interventions (secondary outcomes). Major trauma was defined by either an injury severity score (ISS) >15 or the patient's need for acute care, defined by any of the following: Intensive care unit admission, direct disposition to the operating room, acute interventions performed in the trauma room, and in-hospital death. Primary and secondary outcomes were compared between two time frames (2017-2018 vs.2019-2022). RESULTS In total, 9748 patients were presented following P-scooter and E-bike injuries. Of them, 1183 patients (12.1%) were hospitalized (854 males [72.2%],median age 33 years, median ISS 9).During the study period, the number of ED visits increased by 21-fold, with a parallel increase hospitalizations and surgical interventions numbers, which increased by 3.4-and 3.8-fold, respectively. Numbers of patients with ISSs >15 and patients who required acute care sharply increased during the study period, but no significant differences were found in the percentages of patients with ISSs >15 (p = 0.78) or patients' need for acute care (p = 0.32) between early and late periods. A severity analysis revealed that male sex (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.7 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.2-2.4], p = 0.001) and E-bike riders compared to P-scooter riders (aOR 1.5 [95% CI:1.1-2.0], p = 0.005) were independent predictors for severe trauma. CONCLUSIONS The incidence of E-bike and P-scooter injuries sharply increased over time, with a parallel elevation in numbers of hospitalizations, surgical interventions, and major trauma cases. Major trauma percentages did not increase during the study period. Male sex and E-bikes emerged as independent predictors for major trauma.

Abstract
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has induced profound societal and healthcare transformations globally. Material and methods: This multicenter retrospective study aimed to assess potential shifts in the epidemiology and management of oromaxillofacial trauma requiring surgical intervention over a 1-year period encompassing the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, in comparison to the preceding year. The parameters investigated included age, sex, injury mechanisms, fractured bones, and treatment modalities. The statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: A notable 39.36% reduction in oromaxillofacial fractures was identified (p < 0.001), with no significant alterations in sex distribution, types of fractured bones, or treatment modalities. An appreciable increase in mean age was observed (35.92 vs. 40.26) (p = 0.006). Analysis of the causes of oromaxillofacial trauma revealed diminished incidents of interpersonal violence (41% vs. 35%) and sports-related injuries (14% vs. 8%), alongside an escalation in cases attributed to falls (27% vs. 35%), precipitation events (2% vs. 5%), and traffic accidents (12% vs. 13%). The mandible emerged as the most frequently fractured bone. Conclusion: In conclusion, the COVID-19 pandemic has decreased the number of maxillofacial fractures treated surgically and has changed the epidemiology and the etiology of facial traumas.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since the introduction of electric-scooter (e-scooter) mobile applications, there has been a marked increase in e-scooter-related injury. On January 19, 2022, the City of Miami revoked permits to five major mobile applications for violation of safety protocols. OBJECTIVES The purpose of our study was to assess the effects of this notice on the orthopedic patients seen at our corresponding Level I trauma center. METHODS Institutional Review Board approval was obtained for this study. A retrospective chart review was performed including all patients with orthopedic injuries at our Level I trauma center between July 19, 2021 and July 19, 2022. These dates include 6 months prior to and after the major e-scooter operators ceased use in Miami. SPSS statistical software version 28.0.0 (SPSS, IBM, Armonk, NY) was utilized for all statistical analysis. RESULTS There were 2558 patients in the prenotice cohort, and 2492 patients in the postnotice cohort. After the notice, there was a significant decrease in the number of patients that presented to our institution due to injuries caused by e-scooters (2.8% vs. 1.8% patients; p = 0.021). Patients with injuries caused by e-scooters had a significantly lower age (38 vs. 42, respectively; p = 0.034) and were more likely to be male (79.3% vs. 67.4% male, respectively; p = 0.007) than patients with other orthopedic injuries. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates that the 2022 notice revoking the major mobile application operators from the City of Miami resulted in a significant decrease in the number of orthopedic cases due to e-scooter-related injury at the corresponding Level I trauma center.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Injuries associated with the use of electric scooters are a serious problem in modern society and traffic in relation to their increasing frequency of use. Although injuries involving all body parts are seen in such injuries, craniofacial ones are also very common. The aim of this study was to evaluate the craniofacial and other accompanying injuries in electric scooter-related accidents in Istanbul. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between January 2020 and December 2022, patients with electric scooter-related trauma among the patients admitted to the emergency unit for trauma were evaluated retrospectively. All electronic medical records, CT scans, other examinations, and treatments were retrospectively reviewed, and craniofacial fractures and other injuries seen in the patients were classified. RESULTS A total of 20.358 patients were admitted to the trauma unit between January 2020 and December 2022. Two hundred ten patients (142 male, 68 female) had electric scooter-related trauma and 58.1 % of them had craniofacial injuries. Thirty patients (14.3 %) (23 male, 7 female) had craniofacial fractures, whereas 43.8 % of them had craniofacial soft tissue injuries. The nasal fracture was the most common craniofacial fracture (14 patients, 46.7%). Orbital wall and zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures were found to be the second most common fractures. CONCLUSIONS The rate of electric scooter-related injuries among all trauma patients admitted to the emergency trauma unit during the mentioned period was 1.03%. The results of this study were found to be in accordance with the data in the literature. The craniofacial region is the most frequently injured body part in patients with electric scooter-related trauma, and patients should be comprehensively evaluated for possible soft tissue injuries, craniofacial fractures, and other accompanying system injuries.

Abstract
Recently, there has been a considerable rise in the popularity and use of electric scooters. Because of this, the number of accidents involving them has also risen. Head and neck injuries are the most common. The aim of the study was to determine the most frequent craniofacial injuries resulting from accidents involving electric scooters, and to identify the risk factors directly related to their placement and severity. The study carried out a retrospective analysis of the medical records of patients of the Clinic of Maxillofacial Surgery over 2019-2022, in terms of craniofacial injuries suffered as a result of e-scooter-related accidents. In the study population (31 cases), of which 61.3% were men, the median age was 27 years. At the time of the accident, 32.3% patients were under the influence of alcohol. Accidents were most common in the 21-30 age group; more often than not, they occurred during warm months and on weekends. The study identified a total of 40 fractures in the patients. The most common craniofacial injuries were mandibular fractures (37.5%), zygomatic-orbital fractures (20%) and frontal bone fractures (10%). A multidimensional correspondence analysis was also performed, which showed that at an age of under 30, alcohol consumption and female gender were associated with a higher likelihood of mandibular fracture. Proper education on the risks associated with the use of e-scooters is essential, with particular emphasis on the impact of alcohol on the driver. It is important to develop diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms for doctors, both in ED and in specialised departments.
