Abstract
The arbitrary discharge of contaminated wastes, especially that encompass multidrug resistant microbes (MDR), would broaden the circle of epidemic diseases such as COVID-19, which in turn deteriorate definitely the whole socioeconomics. Therefore, the employment of electrical stimulation techniques such as direct current (DC) with low energy considers being effective tool to impede spontaneous changes in microbial genetic makeup, which increases the prevalence of MDR phenomenon. Herein, the influence of different electric energies generated by DC electric field, volts and time on MDR-bacteria that are categorized among the highly ranked nosocomial pathogens, was scrutinized. Wherein, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis were examined as paradigms of Gram-negative and Gram-positive pathogens. The results declared the significant superior antagonizing potency of electric energy in a dose-dependent modality rather than the applied volts or exposure time. Notably, the exposure of bacterial cultures to140 J inhibited the bacterial count by > 78% and the range of 47-73% for Gram-negative and Gram-positive, respectively. While the suppression in their metabolic activity assessed by > 75% and 41-68%, respectively; reflecting the capability of electrical energy to induce viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state. Similarly, the results of total protein, extracellular protein content and lactate dehydrogenase activity emphasized the cell wall deterioration and losing of cell membrane integrity. Additionally, the elevating in ROS upon DC-exposure participated in DNA fragmentation and plasmid decomposability by the range of 33-60%. Further, SEM micrographs depicted drastic morphological deformations after electrical treatment. Strikingly, DC-treatment impaired antibiotic resistance of the examined strains against several antibiotics by > 64.2%. Generally, our comparative detailed study revealed deleterious potentiality of different DC-protocols in defeating microbial pollution, which could be invested as efficient disinfectant alternative in various sectors such as milk sterilization and wastewater purification.

Abstract
Biopolymers such as chitosan and pectin are currently attracting significant attention because of their unique properties, which are valuable in the food industry and pharmaceutical applications. These properties include non-toxicity, compatibility with biological systems, natural decomposition ability, and structural adaptability. The objective of this study was to assess the performance of two different ratios of pectin-chitosan polyelectrolyte composite (PCPC) after applying them as a coating to commercially pure titanium (CpTi) substrates using electrospraying. The PCPC was studied in ratios of 1:2 and 1:3, while the control group consisted of CpTi substrates without any coating. The pull-off adhesion strength, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial susceptibility tests were utilized to evaluate the PCPC coatings. In order to determine whether the composite coating was the result of physical blending or chemical bonding, the topographic surface parameters were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). PCPC (1:3) had the highest average cell viability of 93.42, 89.88, and 86.85% after 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively, as determined by the cytotoxicity assay, when compared to the other groups. According to the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method for testing antibacterial susceptibility, PCPC (1:3) showed the highest average diameter of the zone of inhibition, measuring 14.88, 14.43, and 11.03 mm after 24, 48, and 72 h of incubation, respectively. This difference was highly significant compared to Group 3 at all three time periods. PCPC (1:3) exhibited a significantly higher mean pull-off adhesion strength (521.6 psi) compared to PCPC (1:2), which revealed 419.5 psi. PCPC (1:3) coated substrates exhibited better surface roughness parameters compared to other groups based on the findings of the AFM. The FTIR measurement indicated that both PCPC groups exhibited a purely physical blending in the composite coating. Based on the extent of these successful in vitro experiments, PCPC (1:3) demonstrates its potential as an effective coating layer. Therefore, the findings of this study pave the way for using newly developed PCPC after electrospraying coating on CpTi for dental implants.

Abstract
Impaired spermatogenesis and male infertility are common consequences of chemotherapy drugs used in patients with testicular cancer. The present study investigated the effects of sodium alginate (NaAL) on testicular toxicity caused by bleomycin, etoposide, and cisplatin (BEP). Rats in group 1 received normal saline, while groups 2 and 3 were treated with 25 and 50 mg/kg of NaAL, respectively. Group 4 was treated with a 21-day cycle of BEP (0.5 mg/kg bleomycin, 5 mg/kg etoposide, and 1 mg/kg cisplatin), and groups 5 and 6 received BEP regimen plus 25 and 50 mg/kg of NaAL, respectively. Then, sperm parameters, testosterone levels, testicular histopathology and stereological parameters, testicular levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and the expression of apoptosis-associated genes including Bcl2, Bax, Caspase3, p53, and TNF-α were evaluated. Our findings revealed that NaAL improved sperm parameters, testosterone levels, histopathology, and stereology parameters in BEP-administrated rats. NaAL also improved testis antioxidant status by enhancing TAC and ameliorating MDA and NO. Further, modifications to the expression of Bcl2, Bax, Caspase3, p53, and TNF-α suggested that NaAL alleviated BEP-induced apoptosis and inflammation. Collectively, NaAL protects rats' testes against BEP-evoked toxicity damage through the modulation of nitro-oxidative stress, apoptosis, and inflammation.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to develop pH-sensitive film indicators for intelligent food packaging by incorporating red cabbage anthocyanins (RCA) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) into an alginate (Alg) film, aiming to mitigate the risk of foodborne illnesses. The films were fabricated using a solvent-casting method and crosslinked with a calcium chloride (CaCl2) solution. Thorough evaluations of the films' physical, mechanical, and structural properties demonstrated significant improvements in elastic modulus and UV/vis light barrier characteristics, reduced water vapor permeability (WVP), and moisture content attributed to integrating RCA and ZnO NPs. The resulting film displayed discernible color changes when exposed to various pH buffer solutions and ammonia vapor, indicating heightened sensitivity to pH fluctuations due to the presence of ZnO NPs. Visual assessment using prawns as test specimens revealed a color shift from violet (indicating satisfactory condition) to blue-greenish (indicating spoilage), corroborated by colorimetric analysis. Moreover, the Alg/ZnO/RCA film exhibited antioxidant and antibacterial properties, demonstrated biodegradation activity, and showed no toxic effects on RSC96 cells, further underscoring its potential as an effective freshness indicator for food products.

Abstract
Marine organisms contain several natural products and bioactive compounds, including hydrolyzed proteins, antioxidant peptides, gelatin, collagen, ω-3 unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin A, vitamin D, calcium phosphate, hydroxyapatite, chitosan, lectin, and various toxins. They can inhibit diverse diseases, be used in pharmaceutical compounds, or as antibiotics and pigments. In this regard, these microorganisms are of crucial medicinal and economical importance. Thanks to new technologies and advanced laboratory methods, bioactive compounds can be extracted from aquatic organisms. In this review study, the cytotoxicity (IC50) and antibacterial effect of various extracts from marine organisms of the Persian Gulf are explored, compiled, and compared. Due to their easy accessibility, most of the studies are green, red, and brown algae.

Abstract
Zebrafish is an important animal model, thousands lines have been developed, thus having a great need for their preservation. However, the cryopreservation of fish oocytes is still limited and needs improvement. The sodium alginate hydrogel, in addition to providing support for the cells, has been shown to be a potential cryoprotectant. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the sodium alginate hydrogel encapsulation technique efficiency during zebrafish ovarian tissue vitrification. The encapsulation methodology was standardized in the first experiment. In Experiment 2, we evaluated four vitrified groups: standard protocol without encapsulation (VS); encapsulated with cryoprotectants (VS1-A); encapsulated with half the cryoprotectants concentration (VS2-A); encapsulated without cryoprotectants (VA). VS treatment (54.6 ± 12.3%; 23.7 ± 9.9%; 12.6 ± 5.0%) did not differ from the VS1-A and VA showed a lower membrane integrity percentage (1.2 ± 1.4%; 0.3 ± 0.6%; 0.5 ± 1.5%). Mitochondrial activity was significantly greater in non-encapsulated treatment (VS) when compared to the encapsulated treatments. VS1-A and VS obtained the lowest lipid peroxidation (39.4 ± 4.4 and 40.5 ± 3.3 nmol MDA/mg respectively) in which VS was not significantly different from the VS2-A treatment (63.6 ± 3.1 nmol MDA/mg), unlike, VA obtained the highest lipid peroxidation level (124.7 ± 7.9 nmol MDA/mg). The results obtained in this study demonstrate that the sodium alginate hydrogel encapsulation technique did not have a cryoprotective action, but maintained the membrane integrity when used the standard concentration of cryoprotectants. However, halving the cryoprotectant concentration of fragments encapsulated in alginate hydrogel did not cause an increase in lipid peroxidation. In addition, it provided support and prevented the oocytes from loosening from the tissue during the vitrification process, being an interesting alternative for later in vitro maturation.

Abstract
Oligosaccharides derived from agar, that is, agarooligosaccharides and neoagarooligosaccharides, have demonstrated various kinds of bioactivities which have been utilized in a variety of fields. Enzymatic hydrolysis is a feasible approach that principally allows for obtaining specific agar oligosaccharides in a sustainable way at an industrial scale. This review summarizes recent technologies employed to improve the properties of agarase. Additionally, the relationship between the degree of polymerization, bioactivities, and potential applications of agar-derived oligosaccharides for pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic, and agricultural industries are discussed. Engineered agarase exhibited general improvement of enzymatic performance, which is mostly achieved by truncation. Rational and semi-rational design assisted by computational methods present the latest strategy for agarase improvement with greatest potential to satisfy future industrial needs. Agarase immobilized on magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles via covalent bond formation showed characteristics well suited for industry. Additionally, albeit with the relationship between the degree of polymerization and versatile bioactivities like anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial agents, prebiotics and in skin care of agar-derived oligosaccharides are discussed here, further researches are still needed to unravel the complicated relationship between bioactivity and structure of the different oligosaccharides.

Abstract
Naringin is the major polyphenol in bitter orange peel with antioxidant property. However, its pH sensitivity, low solubility, and bitter taste limit its application in food. In this study, naringin–sodium alginate–silk fibroin microspheres were prepared by the ionic gel method. The loading capacity and encapsulation efficiency of naringin in microspheres were 13.2% and 77.6%, respectively. The morphology of microspheres was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The X-ray diffractometry and differential scanning calorimetry results showed naringin was amorphous after encapsulation. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and molecular docking analysis confirmed the intermolecular hydrogen bonds between naringin and sodium alginate. Naringin could release from the microspheres continuously under different pH conditions. Compared with free naringin, the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl scavenging activity and the stability of naringin microspheres were significantly improved. The application of naringin microspheres in yogurt indicated the precipitation of whey could be effectively reduced and the decline rate of pH was inhibited. The study suggested that naringin encapsulated microspheres were beneficial for improving the shelf life of this bioactive product as well as providing a new idea for functional yogurt.

Abstract
Alginate is a hydrocolloid from algae, specifically brown algae, which is a group that includes many of the seaweeds, like kelps and an extracellular polymer of some bacteria. Sodium alginate is one of the best-known members of the hydrogel group. The hydrogel is a water-swollen and cross-linked polymeric network produced by the simple reaction of one or more monomers. It has a linear (unbranched) structure based on d-mannuronic and l-guluronic acids. The placement of these monomers depending on the source of its production is alternating, sequential and random. The same arrangement of monomers can affect the physical and chemical properties of this polysaccharide. This polyuronide has a wide range of applications in various industries including the food industry, medicine, tissue engineering, wastewater treatment, the pharmaceutical industry and fuel. It is generally recognized as safe when used in accordance with good manufacturing or feeding practice. This review discusses its application in addition to its structural, physical, and chemical properties.

Abstract
Over the years, the growth of the world population has caused a huge agricultural production to support the population's needs. Since plant protection products are essential to preserve agricultural crops and to optimize vital plant processes, it is crucial to use more sustainable, biodegradable, and biocompatible raw materials, without harming the environment and human health. Although the development of new plant protection products is a costly process, the environmental benefits should be considered. In this context, marine raw materials obtained as byproducts of fishing industries, possessing a wide variety of physicochemical and biological properties, can serve as a promising source of such materials. They have a high potential for developing alternative and safe formulations for agricultural applications, not only as biocompatible excipients but also as effective and selective, or even both. It is also possible to promote a synergistic effect between an active substance and the biological activity of the marine polymer used in the formulation, enabling plant protection products with lower concentrations of the active substances. Thus, this review addresses the repurposing of marine raw materials for the development of innovative plant protection products, focusing on micro- and nanoparticulate formulations, to protect the environment through more ecological and sustainable strategies.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to fabricate ursolic acid (UA)-sodium alginate (SA) complexes to improve the dissolution rate and antioxidant abilities. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-trinitrophenylhydrazine) assay and the pyrogallol auto-oxidation method. For the optimal composition ratio of UA:SA (1:5, w/w), the cumulative release of UA was about 101.22 ± 1.50% for 180 min. Powder X-ray diffractometry (PXRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses confirmed that the crystallinity of UA was significantly reduced by forming complexes with SA. By Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and molecular docking simulations, it was observed that the hydroxyl group in UA formed hydrogen bonding with the carbonyl group in SA. The DPPH scavenger activities of the complexes were also increased compared with free UA. The results indicated that SA could serve as a promising carrier for lipophilic functional food ingredients due to improved solubility and antioxidant activity.

Abstract
An in vitro spermatogonial stem cell (SSC) culture can serve as an effective technique to study spermatogenesis and treatment for male infertility. In this research, we compared the effect of a three-dimensional alginate hydrogel with Sertoli cells in a 3D culture and co-cultured Sertoli cells. After harvest of SSCs from neonatal mice testes, the SSCs were divided into two groups: SSCs on a 3D alginate hydrogel with Sertoli cells and a co-culture of SSCs with Sertoli cells for 1 month. The samples were evaluated by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) assays and bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) tracing, haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining after transplantation into an azoospermic testis mouse. The 3D group showed rapid cell proliferation and numerous colonies compared with the co-culture group. Molecular assessment showed significantly increased integrin alpha-6, integrin beta-1, Nanog, Plzf, Thy-1, Oct4 and Bcl2 expression levels in the 3D group and decreased expression levels of P53, Fas, and Bax. BrdU tracing, and H&E and PAS staining results indicated that the hydrogel alginate improved spermatogenesis after transplantation in vivo. This finding suggested that cultivation of SSCs on alginate hydrogel with Sertoli cells in a 3D culture can lead to efficient proliferation and maintenance of SSC stemness and enhance the efficiency of SSC transplantation.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the changes within the physicochemical properties of gelatin, carrageenan, and sodium alginate hydrosols prepared on the basis of micro-clustered (MC) water. The rheological parameters, contact angle and antioxidant activity of hydrosols were investigated. Moreover, the pH, oxidation–reduction potential (ORP) and electrical conductivity (EC) were measured. The hydrosols with MC water were characterized by a lower pH, decreased viscosity, a lower contact angle, and only slightly lower antioxidant activity than control samples. The results showed that hydrosol’s properties are significantly changed by MC water, which can lead to enhancement of its applicability but requires further investigation.

Abstract
There is a growing interest from the worldwide scientific community in formulating edible- biodegradable coatings to replace non-biodegradable and expensive commercial wax-based coatings for preserving postharvest quality attributes of vegetables including tomatoes. Postharvest tomatoes are a suspected vehicle for both Salmonella and Listeria in food poisoning incidents. In this work, the effectiveness of edible nano-emulsion coatings containing sweet orange essential oil and sodium alginate were prepared and characterized, then evaluated antibacterial and antibiofilm activity against Salmonella and Listeria and simultaneously, examined its coating effect on various quality characteristics of tomatoes at 22 ± 2 °C over a 15 days storage period. DLS (Dynamic light scattering) study revealed stable nanoemulsion formulation with 43.23 nm particle size. The high whiteness index of nanoemulsion has a positive impact on product marketability and desirability. Antibacterial and antibiofilm studies revealed nanoemulsion effectively eradicate both sessile and planktonic forms of Salmonella and Listeria in both single and multi-species culture conditions. Tomatoes coated with edible coating significantly enhanced firmness up to 33%, decreased total mesophilic bacteria including Salmonella and Listeria, and reduced weight loss up to 3 fold lower than uncoated one. Sensory analysis revealed that the use of the edible coating increased the total acceptance scores of tomatoes.

Abstract
Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) have wide applications in tissue engineering, drug delivery, and other fields due to their low antigenicity. Therefore, it is of great significance to effectively cryopreserve HUVECs for subsequent use (i.e., transport, long-term storage of cell banks). However, many commonly used cryoprotective agents (CPAs) are cytotoxic, so finding ideal CPAs to reduce the damage will pave the way for the application of HUVEC's cryopreservation. In this study, sodium alginate (SA) was employed as one of the main CPAs in a closed polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) loop used for cryopreservation with fast freezing of HUVECs. The ice crystal growth process was observed and the thermal enthalpy changes and osmolality of different solutions were tested. Moreover, the effects on cell viability and recovery were examined. The results showed that the addition of SA delayed the growth of ice crystals and decreased the number of ice crystals. Specifically, when 0.5% (w/v) SA was added to the CPAs, the cell survival increased by 10%. It is proved in this study that SA can be used as a novel CPA in combination with PTFE for the fast freezing of HUVECs, which is expected to improve the survival rate of cells and promote the exploration of protectants and cryopreservation in the future.

Abstract
The study was conducted to determine effects of sodium alginate on sperm during cryopreservation. Each ejaculate (n = 20) of five buffalo bulls (3-5 years) were divided into six equal fractions and diluted using egg yolk based extender supplemented with different concentrations of sodium alginate and cryopreserved. Frozen-thawed semen samples were evaluated using the CASA, hypo-osmotic swelling test, cervical mucus penetration capacity test, and chlortetracycline fluorescence assay (CTC). Phosphorylation of tyrosine containing proteins and malondialdehyde concentration of sperm membrane were evaluated using immunoblotting and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance assay respectively. The semen extender's anioxidative capacities were estimated by conducting 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays, metal chelating capacity by assessing ferrozine and antibacterial capacity using agar plate methods. Supplementation of sodium alginate in extender improved sperm longevity, plasma membrane integrity as well as capacity to transit through the cervical mucus. Supplementation of extender with sodium alginate minimises the phase transition of sperm membranes and phosphorylation of tyrosine containing proteins during cryopreservation. Malondialdehyde concentration of sperm was less in sodium alginate-treated sperm as compared with control samples. The results indicated that sodium alginate increased antioxidant capacity of semen extender. Supplementation with sodium alginate also improved the metal chelating capacity and antibacterial properties of the extender. In conclusion, supplementation of extender with sodium alginate enhances free radical scavenging, metal reduction and chelating capacities to protect sperm during cryopreservation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent decades, there has been an increased interest in the utilization of polysaccharides showing biological activity for various novel applications owing to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity, and some specific therapeutic activities. Increasing studies have started in the past few years to develop algal polysaccharides-based biomaterials for various applications. METHODS Saccharide mapping or enzymatic profiling plays a role in quality control of polysaccharides. Whereby, in vitro and in vivo tests as well as toxicity level discriminating polysaccharides biological activities. Extraction and purification methods are performed in obtaining algal derived polysaccharides followed by chromatographic profiles of their active compounds, structural features, physicochemical properties, and reported biological activities. RESULTS Marine algae are capable of synthesizing Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and non-GAGs or GAG mimetics such as sulfated glycans. The cell walls of algae are rich in sulfated polysaccharides, including alginate, carrageenan, ulvan and fucoidan. These biopolymers are widely used algal-derived polysaccharides for biological and biomedical applications due to their biocompatibility and availability. They constitute biochemical compounds that have multi-functionalization, therapeutic potential and immunomodulatory abilities, making them promising bioactive products and biomaterials with a wide range of biomedical applications. CONCLUSION Algal-derived polysaccharides with clearly elucidated compositions/structures, identified cellular activities, as well as desirable physical properties have shown the potential that may create new opportunities. They could be maximally exploited to serve as therapeutic tools such as immunoregulatory agents or drug delivery vehicles. Hence, novel strategies could be applied to tailor multi-functionalization of the polysaccharides from algal species with vast biomedical application potentials.

Abstract
Sodium alginate (SA) and tea polyphenols (TP) are natural preservatives commonly used in the food industry, including the production of fish products. The effect of SA coating infused with TP on the quality of fresh Japanese sea bass (Lateolabrax japonicas) fillets was evaluated over a 20-day period at 4 °C. SA (1.5%, w/v) or TP (0.5%, w/v) treatment alone, and the SA coating infused with TP (SA-TP) all reduced microbial counts, with the SA-TP providing the greatest effect. Fish fillet samples treated with SA-TP had significantly lower levels of total volatile basic nitrogen, lipid oxidation, and protein decomposition during the storage period, relative to the remaining treatments. The samples treated with SA-TP had the highest sensory quality rating as well. Collectively, sodium alginate coating infused with tea polyphenols may represent a promising treatment for preservation of Japanese sea bass fillets during cold storage. PRACTICAL APPLICATION The sodium alginate-tea polyphenols composite coating has strong potential to be used as a new biopreservative for maintaining fish fillet quality.

Abstract
We investigated the effect of sodium alginate hydrosols (1%) with 0.2% of NaCl treated with direct electric current (DC) used as a coating on microbial (Total Viable Counts, Psychrotrophic bacteria, yeast and molds, Lactic acid bacteria, Enterobacteriaceae), physiochemical (pH, lipid oxidation, antioxidant activity, weight loss, color) and sensory properties of skinned pork sausages or with artificial casing stored at 4 °C for 28 days. Moreover, the cytotoxicity analysis of sodium alginate hydrogels was performed. The results have shown that application of experimental coatings on the sausage surface resulted in reducing all tested groups of microorganisms compared to control after a 4-week storage. The cytotoxicity analysis revealed that proliferation of RAW 264.7 and L929 is not inhibited by the samples treated with 200 mA. Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and free radical scavenging activity (DPPH) analyses showed that there are no significant differences in antioxidant properties between control samples and those covered with sodium alginate. After 28 days of storage, the highest value of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) was noticed for variants treated with 400 mA (1.07 mg malondialdehyde/kg), while it was only slightly lower for the control sample (0.95 mg MDA/kg). The obtained results suggest that sodium alginate treated with DC may be used as a coating for food preservation because of its antimicrobial activity and lack of undesirable impact on the quality factors of sausages.

Abstract
It is well known that the pathogenic multidrug resistant microbes are highly distributed and transferred to human through contaminated food and water. Advanced technologies have been developed for controlling these microbes using synthesized nanoparticles. In this study, biosynthesized silver nanoparticles were prepared, characterized and integrated with two synthetic and natural polymers. The polymers-silver nanoparticles were characterized using SEM, FTIR and mechanical properties of the membrane synthesized from either polymers with/without nanosilver. Both of pathogenic bacteria and yeast were tested for their resistance against 10 different antibiotics. The pathogens showed high resistance against 9 antibiotics and only one was recorded as potent. The cytotoxicity of nanosilver integrated polymers were tested against Hamster kidney cells and Human skin fibroblast cells, and the non-cytotoxic dose was checked for its antimicrobial activity against the selected pathogens. The obtained results in this study confirm that the using of the nanomaterials in safe doses could be a good substitution for biogenic antibiotics and chemicals used in water treatment. Moreover, the beads which were used in this study could be lasts for long period in water treatment station with high antibacterial capacity, in addition, it can be gathered easily at the end of the run.
