A Proteomic Approach for Understanding the Mechanisms of Delayed Corneal Wound Healing in Diabetic Keratopathy Using Diabetic Model Rat

Identification of Lipotoxicity-Related Biomarkers in Diabetic Nephropathy Based on Bioinformatic Analysis

Objective: This study is aimed at investigating diagnostic biomarkers associated with lipotoxicity and the molecular mechanisms underlying diabetic nephropathy (DN). Methods: The GSE96804 dataset from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database was utilized to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in DN patients. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses were conducted using the DEGs. A protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was established to identify key genes linked to lipotoxicity in DN. Immune infiltration analysis was employed to identify immune cells with differential expression in DN and to assess the correlation between these immune cells and lipotoxicity-related hub genes. The findings were validated using the external dataset GSE104954. ROC analysis was performed to assess the diagnostic performance of the hub genes. The Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) enrichment method was utilized to analyze the key genes associated with lipotoxicity as mentioned above. Result: In this study, a total of 544 DEGs were identified. Among them, extracellular matrix (ECM), fatty acid metabolism, AGE-RAGE, and PI3K-Akt signaling pathways were significantly enriched. Combining the PPI network and lipotoxicity-related genes (LRGS), LUM and ALB were identified as lipotoxicity-related diagnostic biomarkers for DN. ROC analysis showed that the AUC values for LUM and ALB were 0.882 and 0.885, respectively. The AUC values for LUM and ALB validated in external datasets were 0.98 and 0.82, respectively. Immune infiltration analysis revealed significant changes in various immune cells during disease progression. Macrophages M2, mast cells activated, and neutrophils were significantly associated with all lipotoxicity-related hub genes. These key genes were enriched in fatty acid metabolism and extracellular matrix-related pathways. Conclusion: The identified lipotoxicity-related hub genes provide a deeper understanding of the development mechanisms of DN, potentially offering new theoretical foundations for the development of diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets related to lipotoxicity in DN.

Metalloproteomic Investigation of Hg-Binding Proteins in Renal Tissue of Rats Exposed to Mercury Chloride

Results obtained from rat studies indicate that, even at low concentrations, mercurial species cause harmful effects on the kidneys, by inducing the nephrotic oxidative stress response. In the present work, Hg-associated proteins were identified as possible mercury-exposure biomarkers in rat kidneys exposed to low mercury chloride concentrations for 30 days (Hg-30) and 60 days (Hg-60), using metalloproteomic strategies. The renal proteomic profile was fractioned by two-dimensional electrophoresis and the mercury determinations in kidney samples, protein pellets and protein spots were performed using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. The characterization of Hg-associated protein spots and the analysis of differentially expressed proteins were performed by liquid chromatography, coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Eleven Hg-associated protein spots with a concentration range of 79 ± 1 to 750 ± 9 mg kg-1 in the Hg-60 group were identified. The characterization and expression analyses allowed the identification of 53 proteins that were expressed only in the Hg-60 group, 13 "upregulated" proteins (p > 0.95) and 47 "downregulated" proteins (p < 0.05). Actin isoforms and hemoglobin subunits were identified in protein spots of the Hg-60 group, with mercury concentrations in the range of 138 to 750 mg kg-1, which qualifies these proteins as potential mercury-exposure biomarkers.

Clinical Characteristics and Tear Film Biomarkers in Patients With Chronic Dry Eye Disease After Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Laser in Situ Keratomileusis

PURPOSE

To investigate clinical characteristics and tear film biomarkers of patients with chronic dry eye disease (DED) following femtosecond laser-assisted laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK).

METHODS

Patients were divided into the chronic DED after FS-LASIK (n = 36), DED without FS-LASIK (n = 39), and normal control (without FS-LASIK; n = 34) groups. Dry eye, pain, and psychological-related symptoms were evaluated using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory Modified for the Eye (NPSI-Eye), and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) questionnaires. Ocular surface parameters, tear cytokines, and neuropeptide concentrations were evaluated with specific tests.

RESULTS

The DED after FS-LASIK group showed higher corneal fluorescein staining scores, but lower OSDI and NPSI-Eye scores than the DED without FS-LASIK group (all P < .05). Corneal sensitivity and nerve density decreased in the DED after FS-LASIK group (all P < .01). Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interleukin (IL)-17A, IL-23, alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH), oxytocin, and substance P levels were highest in the DED after FS-LASIK group, followed by the DED without FS-LASIK and normal control groups (all P < .05). Interferon-γ and neurotensin levels were only significantly higher in the DED after FS-LASIK group (all P < .05).

CONCLUSIONS

Patients with chronic DED after FS-LASIK showed milder ocular symptoms, greater epithelial damage, and higher levels of tear inflammatory cytokines and neuropeptides than patients with DED without FS-LASIK, indicating that the nervous and immune systems may play significant roles in FS-LASIK-related chronic DED development. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPARα) regulates wound healing and mitochondrial metabolism in the cornea

Diabetes can result in impaired corneal wound healing. Mitochondrial dysfunction plays an important role in diabetic complications. However, the regulation of mitochondria function in the diabetic cornea and its impacts on wound healing remain elusive. The present study aimed to explore the molecular basis for the disturbed mitochondrial metabolism and subsequent wound healing impairment in the diabetic cornea. Seahorse analysis showed that mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation is a major source of ATP production in human corneal epithelial cells. Live corneal biopsy punches from type 1 and type 2 diabetic mouse models showed impaired mitochondrial functions, correlating with impaired corneal wound healing, compared to nondiabetic controls. To approach the molecular basis for the impaired mitochondrial function, we found that Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-α (PPARα) expression was downregulated in diabetic human corneas. Even without diabetes, global PPARα knockout mice and corneal epithelium-specific PPARα conditional knockout mice showed disturbed mitochondrial function and delayed wound healing in the cornea, similar to that in diabetic corneas. In contrast, fenofibrate, a PPARα agonist, ameliorated mitochondrial dysfunction and enhanced wound healing in the corneas of diabetic mice. Similarly, corneal epithelium-specific PPARα transgenic overexpression improved mitochondrial function and enhanced wound healing in the cornea. Furthermore, PPARα agonist ameliorated the mitochondrial dysfunction in primary human corneal epithelial cells exposed to diabetic stressors, which was impeded by siRNA knockdown of PPARα, suggesting a PPARα-dependent mechanism. These findings suggest that downregulation of PPARα plays an important role in the impaired mitochondrial function in the corneal epithelium and delayed corneal wound healing in diabetes.

Corneal dendritic cells in diabetes mellitus: A narrative review

Diabetes mellitus is a global public health problem with both macrovascular and microvascular complications, such as diabetic corneal neuropathy (DCN). Using in-vivo confocal microscopy, corneal nerve changes in DCN patients can be examined. Additionally, changes in the morphology and quantity of corneal dendritic cells (DCs) in diabetic corneas have also been observed. DCs are bone marrow-derived antigen-presenting cells that serve both immunological and non-immunological roles in human corneas. However, the role and pathogenesis of corneal DC in diabetic corneas have not been well understood. In this article, we provide a comprehensive review of both animal and clinical studies that report changes in DCs, including the DC density, maturation stages, as well as relationships between the corneal DCs, corneal nerves, and corneal epithelium, in diabetic corneas. We have also discussed the associations between the changes in corneal DCs and various clinical or imaging parameters, including age, corneal nerve status, and blood metabolic parameters. Such information would provide valuable insight into the development of diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic strategies for DM-associated ocular surface complications.

Immunomodulatory Role of Neuropeptides in the Cornea

The transparency of the cornea along with its dense sensory innervation and resident leukocyte populations make it an ideal tissue to study interactions between the nervous and immune systems. The cornea is the most densely innervated tissue of the body and possesses both immune and vascular privilege, in part due to its unique repertoire of resident immune cells. Corneal nerves produce various neuropeptides that have a wide range of functions on immune cells. As research in this area expands, further insights are made into the role of neuropeptides and their immunomodulatory functions in the healthy and diseased cornea. Much remains to be known regarding the details of neuropeptide signaling and how it contributes to pathophysiology, which is likely due to complex interactions among neuropeptides, receptor isoform-specific signaling events, and the inflammatory microenvironment in disease. However, progress in this area has led to an increase in studies that have begun modulating neuropeptide activity for the treatment of corneal diseases with promising results, necessitating the need for a comprehensive review of the literature. This review focuses on the role of neuropeptides in maintaining the homeostasis of the ocular surface, alterations in disease settings, and the possible therapeutic potential of targeting these systems.

Unravelling Novel Roles of Salivary Exosomes in the Regulation of Human Corneal Stromal Cell Migration and Wound Healing

Salivary exosomes have demonstrated vast therapeutic and diagnostic potential in numerous diseases. This study pioneers previously unexplored roles of SE in the context of corneal wound healing by utilizing primary corneal stromal cells from healthy (HCFs), type I diabetes mellitus (T1DMs), type II DM (T2DMs), and keratoconus (HKCs) subjects. Purified, healthy human SEs carrying tetraspanins CD9+, CD63+, and CD81+ were utilized. Scratch and cell migration assays were performed after 0, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h following SE stimulation (5 and 25 µg/mL). Significantly slower wound closure was observed at 6 and 12 h in HCFs with 5 μg/mL SE and T1DMs with 5 and 25 μg/mL SE. All wounds were closed by 24-hour, post-wounding. HKCs, T1DMs, and T2DMs with 25µg/mL SE exhibited a significant upregulation of cleaved vimentin compared to controls. Thrombospondin 1 was significantly upregulated in HCFs, HKCs, and T2DMs with 25 µg/mL SE. Lastly, HKCs, T1DMs, and T2DMs exhibited a significant downregulation of fibronectin with 25 μg/mL SE. Whether SEs can be utilized to clinical settings in restoring corneal defects is unknown. This is the first-ever study exploring the role of SEs in corneal wound healing. While the sample size was small, results are highly novel and provide a strong foundation for future studies.

Imaging Keratan Sulfate in Ocular Tissue Sections by Immunofluorescence Microscopy and LA-ICP-MS

Carbohydrate-specific antibodies can serve as valuable tools to monitor alterations in the extracellular matrix resulting from pathologies. Here, the keratan sulfate-specific monoclonal antibody MZ15 was characterized in more detail by immunofluorescence microscopy as well as laser ablation ICP-MS using tissue cryosections and paraffin-embedded samples. Pretreatment with keratanase II prevented staining of samples and therefore demonstrated efficient enzymatic keratan sulfate degradation. Random fluorescent labeling and site-directed introduction of a metal cage into MZ15 were successful and allowed for a highly sensitive detection of the keratan sulfate landscape in the corneal stroma from rats and human tissue.

Sex Differences in Diabetic Ocular Surface Complications and Dysregulation of the OGF-OGFr Pathway

Background

Diabetes is a chronic disorder that affects more than 500 million individuals worldwide. It is a life-long disease with complications that attack nearly all other systems within the body. Although there is a slight increase in the prevalence of diabetes in males, ocular surface complications are equally present in males and females.

Aim

This review provides a discussion on preclinical studies related to the dysregulation of a biological pathway that appears to be causally related to diabetic ocular surface complications including dry eye, delayed corneal epithelial healing, and decreased corneal sensitivity. Most basic science and clinical studies focus on male sex in animal models in order to avoid confounders related to hormonal cycling. However, with approximately 10.2% of all women in the US aged 18-44 being diagnosed with diabetes and nearly 4% additional women having undiagnosed disease, it is prudent to examine the onset of these dysregulations also in females and to note any sex-related differences in the timing of onset or severity of ocular surface complications.

Summary

Data from several well-controlled investigations have documented that female rats with type 1 diabetes develop ocular surface complications before male rats. In part, this finding may be due to the increase in the inhibitory peptide Opioid Growth Factor (OGF) that occurs within 2 weeks of the induction of hyperglycemia in female animals in comparison to the changes in OGF levels in male rats which occur at 4 weeks. It was noted that estrogen levels drop within weeks of induction of hyperglycemia and could serve as another marker for the onset of disease activity and/or its complications. Finally, insulin does not appear to protect against early changes in OGF levels or estrogen secretion in diabetic female rats, setting the stage for a distinction in the disease profile of diabetes between males and females. These data encourage further studies on both sexes in order to establish a complete understanding of the underlying pathologies associated with complications associated with diabetes.

A Simple Inner-Stopper Guarded Trephine for Creation of Uniform Keratectomy Wounds in Rodents

Purpose

Creating controllable, reproducible keratectomy wounds in rodent corneas can be a challenge due to their small size, thickness, and the lack of usual tools available for human eyes such as a vacuum trephine. The purpose of this work is to provide a consistent, reproducible corneal stromal defect in rats using a simple, economical, and customized inner-stopper guarded trephine.

Methods

The inner-stopper guarded trephine is used to induce a circular wound in rat corneas. After trephination, the corneal flap can be removed by manual dissection using a blunt spatula. We used optical coherence topography (OCT) to measure the defect wound depth induced in ex vivo rat eyes.

Results

Despite a minor learning curve, this simple device enables depth control, reduces variability of manual keratectomy wound depth in rats, and decreases the risk for corneal perforation during keratectomy. Corneal defect creation was highly reproducible across different researchers and was independent of their surgical training.

Conclusion

This inner-stopper guarded trephine can be utilized and applied to pre-clinical testing of a wide range of corneal wound healing therapies, including but not limited to biotherapeutics, corneal prosthetics, and regenerative technologies.

Ocular surface complications in diabetes: The interrelationship between insulin and enkephalin

Diabetes is a multi-faceted disorder with increasing prevalence and rising healthcare costs. The burden of diabetes is increased because of associated complications affecting nearly all organs including the eye. The underlying pathophysiology for the onset of these ocular surface disorders is not well known. Enkephalins are endogenous opioids that originate in the brain and have numerous actions in the human body. Opioid growth factor (OGF), chemically termed [Met5]-enkephalin, binds to a novel, nuclear-associated receptor and mediates cellular homeostasis. Serum OGF levels are elevated in diabetic individuals and rodent models of diabetes. Sustained blockade of the OGF receptor (OGFr) with opioid receptor antagonists, such as naltrexone (NTX), reverses many complications of diabetes in the animal model, including delayed cutaneous wound healing, dry eye, altered corneal surface sensitivity, and keratopathy. The increased enkephalin levels observed in diabetes suggest a relationship between endogenous opioid peptides and the pathophysiology of diabetes. It is common for diabetic patients to undergo insulin therapy to restore normal blood glucose levels. However, this restoration does not alter OGF serum levels nor ameliorate ocular surface complications in the animal model of diabetes. Moreover, sex differences in the prevalence of diabetes, response to insulin therapy, and abnormalities in the OGF-OGFr axis have been reported. This review highlights current knowledge on the dysregulation of the OGF-OGFr pathway and possible relationships of insulin and enkephalins to the development of ocular surface defects in diabetes. It proposes that this dysregulation is a fundamental mechanism for the pathobiology of diabetic complications.

Label-free Raman spectroscopy: A potential tool for early diagnosis of diabetic keratopathy

Diabetes has become a major public health problem worldwide, and the incidence of diabetes has been increasing progressively. Diabetes is prone to cause various complications, among which diabetic keratopathy (DK) emphasizes the significant impact on the cornea. The current diagnosis of DK lacks biochemical markers that can be used for early and non-invasive screening and detection. In contrast, in this study, Raman spectroscopy, which demonstrates non-destructive, label-free features, especially the unique advantage of providing molecular fingerprint information for target substances, were utilized to interrogate the intrinsic information of the corneal tissues from normal and diabetic mouse models, respectively. Visually, the Raman spectral response derived from the biochemical components and biochemical differences between the two groups were compared. Moreover, multivariate analysis methods such as principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were carried out for advanced statistical analysis. PCA yields a diagnostic results of 57.4% sensitivity, 89.2% specificity, 74.8% accuracy between the diabetic group and control group; Moreover, PLS-DA was employed to enhance the diagnostic ability, showing 76.1% sensitivity, 86.1% specificity, and 87.6% accuracy between the diabetic group and control group. Our proof-of-concept results show the potential of Raman spectroscopy-based techniques to help explore the underlying pathogenesis of DK disease and thus be further expanded for potential applications in the early screening of diabetic diseases.

Nuclear translocation of β-catenin induced by E-cadherin endocytosis causes recurrent erosion of diabetic cornea

Recurrent epithelial erosion and refractory corneal ulcer are the clinical features of diabetic keratopathy (DK), which eventually lead to corneal scar and visual disturbance. In this study, we sought to determine the abnormalities of cell junction in diabetic corneal epithelial cells and the effect of high glucose on the β-catenin/E-cadherin complex. Corneal histology showed that corneal epithelial cells of high glucose mice were loosely arranged, and the immunohistochemistry showed that the expression of E-cadherin decreased, the levels of β-catenin increased in nuclear. High glucose-induced degradation and endocytosis of E-cadherin of corneal epithelial cells reduce the formation of β-catenin/E-cadherin complex and promote the nuclear translocation of β-catenin. Moreover, high glucose also activated the transcription and expression of matrix metallopeptidase and snail, which interfered with the adhesion of corneal epithelial cells to the basement membrane. These findings reveal that DK is associated with the dissociation of cell junctions. The maintenance of the stability of the β-catenin/E-cadherin complex may be a potential therapeutic target of refractory corneal ulcers in patients with diabetes.

Sirt1 attenuates diabetic keratopathy by regulating the endoplasmic reticulum stress pathway

AIMS

The objectives of this study were to explore physiological and pathological changes in the corneas of diabetic rats by intervening in the expression of silent information regulator 1 (Sirt1) and to investigate whether Sirt1 can regulate the activation of endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) while influencing corneal epithelial cell apoptosis under high glucose conditions.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Using 8-week old Sprague-Dawley rats, we established a model of type 1 diabetes, with or without Sirt1 intervention. Clinical evaluation was performed once per week. Primary rat corneal epithelial cells (RCECs) were cultured by combining Sirt1 intervention under high glucose conditions. Generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), apoptosis, and the expression of Sirt1 and ERS-related proteins were evaluated in rat corneal tissues and RCECs.

KEY FINDINGS

During the intervention, clinical evaluation of the ocular surface, ROS generation, apoptosis, and protein expression of ERS-related proteins in corneal tissue and cultured RCECs were altered with Sirt1expression levels.

SIGNIFICANCE

Sirt1 expression influences the pathological progression of diabetic keratopathy, plays an important role in regulating the ERS pathway, and decreases corneal epithelial cell apoptosis.

Distribution and Function of Glycosaminoglycans and Proteoglycans in the Development, Homeostasis and Pathology of the Ocular Surface

The ocular surface, which forms the interface between the eye and the external environment, includes the cornea, corneoscleral limbus, the conjunctiva and the accessory glands that produce the tear film. Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and proteoglycans (PGs) have been shown to play important roles in the development, hemostasis and pathology of the ocular surface. Herein we review the current literature related to the distribution and function of GAGs and PGs within the ocular surface, with focus on the cornea. The unique organization of ECM components within the cornea is essential for the maintenance of corneal transparency and function. Many studies have described the importance of GAGs within the epithelial and stromal compartment, while very few studies have analyzed the ECM of the endothelial layer. Importantly, GAGs have been shown to be essential for maintaining corneal homeostasis, epithelial cell differentiation and wound healing, and, more recently, a role has been suggested for the ECM in regulating limbal stem cells, corneal innervation, corneal inflammation, corneal angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis. Reports have also associated genetic defects of the ECM to corneal pathologies. Thus, we also highlight the role of different GAGs and PGs in ocular surface homeostasis, as well as in pathology.

Retinal proteomic evaluation of rats following streptozotocin‑injection using shotgun proteomics

It is important to elucidate how retinal stimulation leads to retinal protection and dysfunction. The current study aimed to identify factors that are up‑ and downregulated in the retinas of streptozotocin (STZ)‑induced diabetic rats with acute retinal dysfunction. Retinal function was measured and changes in protein expressions were determined using electroretinograms (ERGs) and liquid chromatography/mass spectroscopy‑based shotgun proteomics, respectively. The results revealed that the plasma glucose levels of STZ rats were markedly higher when compared with normal rats. Furthermore, levels of a‑waves, b‑waves and oscillatory potential amplitudes on ERGs in STZ rats were decreased compared with healthy animals. With use of shotgun proteomics, 391 proteins were identified in the retinas of normal rats and 541 proteins were found in the retinas of STZ rats. Of the 560 proteins identified in rat retinas, 372 (66.4%) were present in both normal and STZ rats. Of these, 19 (3.39%) were unique to normal rats and 169 (30.1%) were unique to STZ rats. Gene Ontology analysis was performed on the candidate proteins that were differentially regulated in the retinas of STZ rats and focused on those classified as 'protein binding', which serve important roles in retinal neurodegeneration. The results revealed an excessive expression of retinol‑binding protein 1 (RBP1) and a negative expression of rod outer segment membrane protein 1 (Rom-1) in the retinas of STZ rats. Therefore, retinal function may be decreased with STZ‑induced injury, and expressions of Rom‑1 and RBP1 may be altered in the retinas of STZ rats.

Gelam honey promotes ex vivo corneal fibroblasts wound healing

This study evaluated the effects of Gelam honey (GH) on ex vivo corneal fibroblast ulcer model via wound healing assay, gene expression and immunocytochemistry. Corneal fibroblasts from New Zealand white rabbits were culture expanded. The corneal fibroblast wound healing capacity was observed by creating a circular wound onto confluent monolayer cells cultured in basal medium (BM), BM with GH, serum-enriched basal medium (BMS) and BMS with GH respectively. Wound healing assay and phenotypic characterization of the corneal fibroblast were performed at different stages of wound closure. Expression of aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), vimentin, α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), lumican, collagen I and matrix metalloproteinase 12 (MMP 12) were measured at day 1, day 3 and complete wound closure day. Corneal fibroblast cultured in BMS with GH demonstrated the fastest wound closure, at day 5 post wounding. The gene expressions of ALDH and vimentin were higher than control groups while α-SMA expression was lower, in GH enriched media. The expressions of lumican, collagen I and MMP 12 were also higher in cells cultured in GH enriched media compared to the control groups. GH was shown to promote in vitro corneal fibroblast wound healing and may be a potential natural adjunct in the treatment of corneal wound.

Experimental modeling of cornea wound healing in diabetes: clinical applications and beyond

Diabetes mellitus is the most common cause of blindness in working age populations worldwide. While much of the focus for public health has been on secondary prevention in sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy, the cornea, including its epithelium and nerves, represents a major site of damage by chronic hyperglycemia. On injury, the diabetic cornea exhibits a delayed wound-healing response, as well as an altered ocular surface immune response. This suggests a potential association between the dysfunctional wound healing response and altered inflammation on the ocular surface. However, the presence of potential confounders makes this association difficult to investigate in human epidemiological studies. Thus, we turn to animal diabetic models for a better understanding. In this review, 20 original studies, published between 2008 and 2018, describe in vivo and in vitro models of diabetic cornea disease. We compared different models of diabetic cornea wound healing and discussed the relative strengths and drawbacks of each model. A number of molecular and cellular components involved in the corneal wound healing response that are altered in the presence of diabetes have been identified in the reviewed studies. Particularly, altered corneal epithelial protein concentrations of lumician and occludin were detected in diabetic eyes compared with controls. Additionally, the importance of IL-1β in modulating the inflammatory response after corneal injury in patients with diabetes and controls was further elucidated. Meanwhile, abnormal P2×7 receptor localization and decreased corneal sub-basal nerve density in diabetic eyes were shown to contribute to altered corneal nerve signaling after injury and thus affecting the wound healing response. Finally, the discovery of the therapeutic effects of topically administered aloe vera, Serpine 1, Resolvin D1 (RvD1), pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) and Pro-His-Ser-Arg-Asn in diabetic animal models of cornea epithelial and nerve injury provide encouraging evidence for the future availability of effective treatment for diabetic keratopathy.
