Abstract
Microbiota imbalances are linked to inflammation and disease, as well as neurodevelopmental conditions where they may contribute to behavioral, physiological, and central nervous system dysfunction. By contrast, the role of the microbiota in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), the group of neurodevelopmental conditions that can occur following prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE), has not received similar attention. Here we utilized a rodent model of alcohol consumption during pregnancy to characterize the impact of alcohol on the microbiota of dam-offspring dyads. Overall, bacterial diversity decreased in alcohol-consuming dams and community composition differed from that of controls in alcohol-consuming dams and their offspring. Bacterial taxa and predicted biochemical pathway composition were also altered with alcohol consumption/exposure; however, there was minimal overlap between the changes in dams and offspring. These findings illuminate the potential importance of the microbiota in the pathophysiology of FASD and support investigation into novel microbiota-based interventions.

Abstract
Nutraceutical interventions supporting microbiota and eliciting clinical improvements in metabolic diseases have grown significantly. Chronic stress, gut dysbiosis, and metainflammation have emerged as key factors intertwined with sleep disorders, consequently exacerbating the decline in quality of life. This study aimed to assess the effects of two nutraceutical formulations containing prebiotics (fructooligosaccharides (FOS), galactooligosaccharides (GOS), yeast β-glucans), minerals (Mg, Se, Zn), and the herbal medicine Silybum marianum L. Gaertn., Asteraceae (Milk thistle or Silymarin). These formulations, namely NSupple (without silymarin) and NSupple_Silybum (with silymarin) were tested over 180 days in overweight/obese volunteers from Brazil's southeastern region. We accessed fecal gut microbiota by partial 16S rRNA sequences; cytokines expression by CBA; anthropometrics, quality of life and sleep, as well as metabolic and hormonal parameters, at baseline (T0) and 180 days (T180) post-supplementation. Results demonstrated gut microbiota reshaping at phyla, genera, and species level post-supplementation. The Bacteroidetes phylum, Bacteroides, and Prevotella genera were positively modulated especially in the NSupple_Silybum group. Gut microbiota modulation was associated with improved sleep patterns, quality-of-life perception, cytokines expression, and anthropometric parameters post-supplementation. Our findings suggest that the nutraceutical blends positively enhance cardiometabolic and inflammatory markers. Particularly, NSupple_Silybum modulated microbiota composition, underscoring its potential significance in ameliorating metabolic dysregulation. Abstract
SCOPE Bile acids play a crucial role in lipid absorption and the regulation of lipid, glucose, and energy homeostasis. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), a lipophilic antioxidant, has been recognized for its positive effects on obesity and related glycolipid metabolic disorders. However, the relationship between CoQ10 and bile acids has not yet been evaluated. METHODS AND RESULTS This study assesses the impact of CoQ10 treatment on bile acid metabolism in mice on a high-fat diet using Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography-tandem Mass Spectrometry. CoQ10 reverses the reduction in serum and colonic total bile acid levels and alters the bile acid profile in mice that are caused by a high-fat diet. Seventeen potential targets of CoQ10 in bile acid metabolism are identified by network pharmacology, with six being central to the mechanism. Molecular docking shows a high binding affinity of CoQ10 to five of these key targets. Further analyses indicate that farnesoid X (FXR) receptor and Takeda G-protein coupled receptor 5 (TGR5) may be crucial targets for CoQ10 to regulate bile acid metabolism and exert beneficial effects. CONCLUSION This study sheds light on the impact of CoQ10 in bile acids metabolism and offers a new perspective on the application of CoQ10 in metabolic health.

Abstract
Introduction Dietary nutrient content is crucial for energy metabolism and development of gut microbiota. Herein, this study aimed to explore the effects of fat-to-fiber ratios on nutrient transporter, energy metabolism and gut microbiota when ingredients composition was altered. Methods A total of 240 as-hatched broiler chickens were randomly assigned into three groups including low fat-high dietary fiber (LF-HD), medium fat-medium dietary fiber (MF-MD) and high fat-low dietary fiber (HF-LD), with diets being iso-protein, and broilers were offered the same commercial diets from 21 to 42 d. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA of SPSS. Results and Discussion Results showed that HF-LD diet significantly increased glucose content and decreased triglyceride in serum of broilers (p < 0.05). The mRNA abundance of jejunal gene involved in glucose transporter and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle was significantly increased in broilers fed with HF-LD diets. Compared with LF-HD, HF-LD had a lower abundance of Anaerofilum and CHKCI001, and an increased proportion of beneficial bacteria such as Alistipes, Catenibacillus, Intestinimonas, Lactobacillus, and Peptococcus (p < 0.05). Functional prediction of these microbial changes indicated that HF-LD diet drove caecal microbiota to participate in carbohydrate metabolism and TCA cycle (p < 0.05). Dietary HF-LD-induced microbiota changes were positively correlated with growth performance of broilers (p < 0.05). Therefore, HF-LD diet increased glucose transporters and energy metabolism in intestine and shaped microbial structure and metabolic pathways, which may benefit the growth performance of broilers.

Abstract
The rising prevalence of lifestyle diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic syndrome, has increased the need for effective dietary interventions. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of heat-moisture-treated high-amylose rice (HA-HMT) on body weight, lipid metabolism, and gut microbiome composition in a rat model of obesity. Starch digestibility-specifically, resistant starch-has been shown to provide various health benefits, including improved metabolic health and gut microbiome composition. We employed a sequential approach: firstly, utilizing diet-induced obesity rat models fed with HMT-processed and HMT-non-processed low- or high-amylose rice to investigate the potential of amylose content or HMT to alter phenotypic characteristics and lipid metabolism; and secondly, using the optimal rice flour identified in the previous step to explore the underlying mechanisms. Our findings indicate that heat-moisture treatment, rather than the level of the amylose content of the rice, contributes to the observed anti-obesity and cholesterol-lowering effects. We identified candidate genes contributing to the cholesterol-regulating potential and demonstrated that HMT rice flour could influence the gut microbiome, particularly the Ruminococcus taxa. This study provides valuable insights into the health benefits of HA-HMT rice and supports its potential as a functional food ingredient in the management of obesity and cholesterol-related disorders.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Resistant starch has received much attention recently as a healthy carbohydrate component of the diet. Resistant starch is not digested in the small intestine and can thus affect the gut microbiota of the host because of its fermentability. This review summarizes the interactions along the resistant starch-gut microbiota-host axis to help understand the health effects of resistant starch. RECENT FINDINGS Recent studies indicate that resistant starch can be a helpful dietary component for special disease states like diabetes, metabolic syndrome, chronic kidney disease, constipation, and colitis. Its health effects are associated with modulation of the gut microbiota, and with gut microbes converting resistant starch into active and bioavailable metabolites that promote intestinal health. SUMMARY The results from human clinical trials and studies in animal models indicate that supplementation of the diet with resistant starch in different metabolic diseases help remodel gut microbiota, especially increasing short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria, and produce bioactive metabolites like SCFA, bile acids, and amino acids responsible for a variety of health effects. The gut microbiota and microbial metabolites probably mediate the effects of resistant starch on intestinal health.

Abstract
The health risks of Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) with its cardiovascular toxicity, liver toxicity and cytotoxicity had been generally acknowledged. However, the influence on gut microbiome and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) metabolism caused by DBDPE exposure remained unknown. In this study, three exposure groups (5, 50, 500 mg/L) and control group were used to investigate the effect of DBDPE by using simulator of the human intestinal microbial ecosystem (SHIME). 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing illustrated that high dose DBDPE exposure increased the α-diversity of gut microbiota, while reduced the abundance of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria. In addition, the low dose (5 mg/L) DBDPE inhibited the increasing of SCFAs, but the medium and high dose (50 and 500 mg/L) DBDPE promoted the advancement, especially in ascending colon. Notably, DBDPE exposure lead a similar changing of acetic acid and butyric acid contents in different sections of the colon. This study confirmed the alternation of composition and metabolic function in gut microbial community due to DBDPE exposure, indicating an intestinal damage and appealing for more attention concentrated on the health effects of DBDPE exposure.
