Golden Tides: Problem or Golden Opportunity? The Valorisation of Sargassum from Beach Inundations

On the performance of Sargassum-derived calcium alginate ion exchange resins for Pb2+ adsorption: batch and packed bed applications

Driven by climate change and human activity, Sargassum blooming rates have intensified, producing copious amount of the invasive, pelagic seaweed across the Caribbean and Latin America. Battery recycling and lead-smelter wastes have heavily polluted the environment and resulted in acute lead poisoning in children through widespread heavy metal contamination particular in East Trinidad. Our study details a comprehensive investigation into the use of Sargassum (S. natans), as a potential resource-circular feedstock for the synthesis of calcium alginate beads utilized in heavy metal adsorption, both in batch and column experiments. Here, ionic cross-linking of extracted sodium alginate with calcium chloride was utilized to create functional ion-exchange beads. Given the low quality of alginates extracted from Sargassum which produce poor morphological beads, composite beads in conjunction with graphene oxide and acrylamide were used to improve fabrication. Stand-alone calcium alginate beads exhibited superior Pb2+ adsorption, with a capacity of 213 mg g-1 at 20 °C and pH 3.5, surpassing composite and commercial resins. Additives like acrylamide and graphene oxide in composite alginate resins led to a 21-40% decrease in Pb2+ adsorption due to reduced active sites. Column operations confirmed Alginate systems' practicality, with 20-24% longer operating times, 15 times lower adsorbent mass on scale-up and 206% smaller column diameters compared to commercial counterparts. Ultimately, this study advocates for Sargassum-based Alginate ion-exchange beads as a bio-based alternative in Trinidad and developing nations for dealing with heavy metal ion waste, offering superior heavy metal adsorption performance and supporting resource circularity.

Beach wrack: Discussing ecological roles, risks, and sustainable bioenergy and agricultural applications

The equilibrium of the marine ecosystem is currently threatened by several constraints, among which climate change and anthropogenic activities stand out. Indeed, these factors favour the growth of macroalgae, which sometimes end up stranded on the beaches at the end of their life cycle, forming what is known as beach wrack. Despite its undeniable important ecological role on beaches, as it is an important source of organic matter (OM), and provides food and habitat for several invertebrates, reptiles, small mammals, and shorebirds, the overaccumulation of beach wrack is often associated with the release of greenhouse gases, negatively impacting tourist activities, and generating economic expenses for its removal. Although currently beach wrack is mainly treated as a waste, it can be used for numerous potential applications in distinct areas. This review aimed at providing a solid point of view regarding the process of wrack formation, its spatiotemporal location, as well as its importance and risks. It also contains the current advances of the research regarding sustainable alternatives to valorise this organic biomass, that range from bioenergy production to the incorporation of wrack in agricultural soils, considering a circular economy concept. Although there are some concerns regarding wrack utilisation, from its variable availability to a possible soil contamination with salts and other contaminants, this review comprises the overall beneficial effects of the incorporation of this residue particularly in the organic agricultural model, strengthening the conversion of this wasted biomass into a valuable resource.

Predominant heterotrophic diazotrophic bacteria are involved in Sargassum proliferation in the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt

Since 2011, the Caribbean coasts have been subject to episodic influxes of floating Sargassum seaweed of unprecedented magnitude originating from a new area "the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt" (GASB), leading in episodic influxes and mass strandings of floating Sargassum. For the biofilm of both holopelagic and benthic Sargassum as well as in the surrounding waters, we characterized the main functional groups involved in the microbial nitrogen cycle. The abundance of genes representing nitrogen fixation (nifH), nitrification (amoA), and denitrification (nosZ) showed the predominance of diazotrophs, particularly within the GASB and the Sargasso Sea. In both location, the biofilm associated with holopelagic Sargassum harboured a more abundant proportion of diazotrophs than the surrounding water. The mean δ15N value of the GASB seaweed was very negative (-2.04‰), and lower than previously reported, reinforcing the hypothesis that the source of nitrogen comes from the nitrogen-fixing activity of diazotrophs within this new area of proliferation. Analysis of the diversity of diazotrophic communities revealed for the first time the predominance of heterotrophic diazotrophic bacteria belonging to the phylum Proteobacteria in holopelagic Sargassum biofilms. The nifH sequences belonging to Vibrio genus (Gammaproteobacteria) and Filomicrobium sp. (Alphaproteobacteria) were the most abundant and reached, respectively, up to 46.0% and 33.2% of the community. We highlighted the atmospheric origin of the nitrogen used during the growth of holopelagic Sargassum within the GASB and a contribution of heterotrophic nitrogen-fixing bacteria to a part of the Sargassum proliferation.

Assessing quality and beneficial uses of Sargassum compost

Sargassum spp. (specifically Sargassum fluitans and S. natans), one of the dominant forms of marine macroalgae (seaweed) found on the beaches of Florida, is washing up on the shores throughout the Caribbean in record quantities. Currently, a common management option is to haul and dispose of beached Sargassum in local landfills, potentially wasting a valuable renewable resource. The objective of this study was to determine whether composting represents a feasible alternative to managing Sargassum inundations through measurements and comparisons to eleven guidelines. Specifically, we assessed the characteristics of the compost [physical-chemical parameters (temperature, moisture content, pH, and conductivity), nutrient ratios (C:N), elemental composition, bacteria levels, and ability to sustain plant growth] in both small- and large scale experiments. Results show that although nutrient concentration ratios were not within the standards outlined by the U.S. Composting Council (USCC), the Sargassum compost was able to sustain the growth of radishes (Raphanus sativus L., var. Champion). Trace metal concentrations in the compost product were within five regulatory guidelines evaluated, except for arsenic (As) (6.64-26.5 mg/kg), which exceeded one of the five (the Florida Soil Cleanup Target Level for residential use). Bacteria levels were consistent with regulatory guidelines for compost produced in large-scale outdoor experiments but not for the small-scale set conducted in enclosed tumblers. Overall results support that Sargassum compost can be beneficially used for fill and some farming applications.

Kinetics of metal and metalloid concentrations in holopelagic Sargassum reaching coastal environments

Since 2011, the Caribbean Islands have experienced unprecedented stranding of a pelagic brown macroalgae Sargassum inducing damages for coastal ecosystems and economy. This study measures the kinetics of metal trace elements (MTE) in Sargassum reaching different coastal environments. In July 2021, over a period of 25 days, fixed experimental floating cages containing the three Sargassum morphotypes (S. fluitans III and S. natans I and VIII) were placed in three different coastal habitats (coral reef, seagrass, and mangrove) in Guadeloupe (French West Indies). Evolution of biomasses and their total phenolic content of Sargassum reveals that environmental conditions of caging were stressful and end up to the death of algae. Concentrations of 19 metal(loid) trace elements were analyzed and three shapes of kinetics were identified with the MTE that either concentrate, depurate, or remains stable. In the mangrove, evolution of MTE was more rapid than the two other habitats a decrease of the As between 70 and 50 μg g-1 in the mangrove. Sargassum natans I presented a different metal composition than the two other morphotypes, with higher contents of As and Zn. All Sargassum morphotype are rapidly releasing the metal(oid)s arsenic (As) when they arrive in studied coastal habitats. In order to avoid the transfer of As from Sargassum to coastal environments, Sargassum stranding should be avoided and their valorization must take into account their As contents.

Energy-saving pretreatments affect pelagic Sargassum composition and DNA metabarcoding reveals the microbial community involved in methane yield

Sargassum spp. flood the Caribbean coastline, causing damage to the local economy and environment. Anaerobic digestion (AD) has been proposed as an attractive option for turning macroalgae into valuable resources. Sargassum spp. has a complex composition that affects the microbial composition involved in AD which generates a low methane yield. This study aimed to improve the methane yield of pelagic Sargassum, using different energy-saving pretreatments and identifying the microbial community associated with methane production. We applied different energy-saving pretreatments to algal biomass and assessed the methane yield using a biomethane potential (BMP) test. The microbial communities involved in the AD of the best- and worst-performing methanogenic systems were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that pretreatment modified the content of inorganic compounds, fibers, and the C:N ratio, which had a strong positive correlation with BMP. The water washing pretreatment resulted in the best methane yield, with an increase of 38%. DNA metabarcoding analysis revealed that the bacterial genera Marinilabiliaceae_uncultured, DMER64, Treponema, and Hydrogenispora, as well as the archaea genera Methanosarcina, RumEn_M2, Bathyarchaeia, and Methanomassiliicocus, dominated the microbial community with a high methane yield. This study is the first to demonstrate the microbial community structure involved in the AD of Sargassum spp. The pretreatments presented in this study can help overcome the limitations associated with methane yield.

Sargasso Sea Vibrio bacteria: Underexplored potential pathovars in a perturbed habitat

We fully sequenced the genomes of 16 Vibrio cultivars isolated from eel larvae, plastic marine debris (PMD), the pelagic brown macroalga Sargassum, and seawater samples collected from the Caribbean and Sargasso Seas of the North Atlantic Ocean. Annotation and mapping of these 16 bacterial genome sequences to a PMD-derived Vibrio metagenome-assembled genome created for this study showcased vertebrate pathogen genes closely-related to cholera and non-cholera pathovars. Phenotype testing of cultivars confirmed rapid biofilm formation, hemolytic, and lipophospholytic activities, consistent with pathogenic potential. Our study illustrates that open ocean vibrios represent a heretofore undescribed group of microbes, some representing potential new species, possessing an amalgam of pathogenic and low nutrient acquisition genes, reflecting their pelagic habitat and the substrates and hosts they colonize.

Characterization of sargassum accumulated on Dominican beaches in 2021: Analysis of heavy, alkaline and alkaline-earth metals, proteins and fats

This paper presents the characterization of sargassum that reached the shores of eight Dominican beaches in 2021. The analysis of heavy, alkaline and alkaline-earth metals was performed by ICP-OES. Twelve heavy metals were studied, with the highest concentrations corresponding to Fe, As, and Zn. Regarding the alkaline and alkaline-earth metals, the highest concentrations were detected for Ca, K, Na and Mg. The high values of arsenic and alkali and alkaline-earth metal salts do not suggest using these algae in agriculture. It is recommended to carry out arsenic speciation studies to assess whether the form in which it is found is bioavailable for plants and animals. The heavy metal contamination index was determined, which ranged between 0.318 and 3.279. Finally, for the first time in the country, the organic fraction of sargassum was analyzed.

Aspen plus simulation of sargassum for quality synthesis gas

Biomass is widely considered as a raw material for the production of biochemicals and biofuels and among all the options for its use, the gasification process is the most popular due to its environmental advantages. The great arrival of sargassum to the coasts of the State of Quintana Roo, Mexico, which has taken place for several years, forces us to study its energy use. In this study, the experimental results of the gasification of four biomasses (pine sawdust, bamboo dust, rice husk, and cane bagasse) from three different bibliographical references were simulated and validated, using the Aspen Plus computer software. The simulation model used considers the combustion of 30% of the biomass and therefore an energy balance, in addition to an estimate of the tar generated in the process. Based on the comparison of the percentage molar composition and the heating value of the syngas obtained the performance of the process was evaluated, where the lowest error per difference was for the validation of rice husk (RH) with an ER of 0.35. Subsequently, the sargassum gasification simulation was carried out with information on the properties of this biomass from five bibliographic references, obtaining as a result a syngas with a lower heating value (LHV) that varies between 2.6 and 4.8 MJ/Nm³ for ER of 0.3 and 0.35, respectively.

Interannual variations of Sargassum blooms in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea during 2017-2021

Golden tide, caused by Sargassum horneri, is becoming another periodic and trans-regional harmful macroalgal bloom in the Yellow Sea (YS) and East China Sea (ECS) other than the green tide. In this study, we employed high-resolution remote sensing, field validations, and population genetics to investigate the spatiotemporal development pattern of Sargassum blooms during the years 2017 to 2021 and explore the potential environmental factors that influence them. Sporadic floating Sargassum rafts could be detected in the middle or northern YS during autumn and the distribution area then occurred sequentially along the Chinese and/or western Korean coastlines. The floating biomass amplified significantly in early spring, reached its maximum in two to three months with an evident northward expansion, and then declined rapidly in May or June. The scale of the spring bloom was much larger than the winter one in terms of coverage, suggesting an additional local source in ECS. The blooms were mostly confined to waters with a sea surface temperature range of 10-16℃, while the drifting pathways were consistent with the prevailing wind trajectory and surface currents. The floating S. horneri populations exhibited a homogenous and conservative genetic structure among years. Our findings underscore the year-round cycle of golden tides, the impact of physical hydrological environments on the drifting and blooming of pelagic S. horneri, and provide insights for monitoring and forecasting this emerging marine ecological disaster.

Polysaccharides from the Sargassum and Brown Algae Genus: Extraction, Purification, and Their Potential Therapeutic Applications

Brown macroalgae represent one of the most proliferative groups of living organisms in aquatic environments. Due to their abundance, they often cause problems in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, resulting in health problems in humans and the death of various aquatic species. To resolve this, the application of Sargassum has been sought in different research areas, such as food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics, since Sargassum is an easy target for study and simple to obtain. In addition, its high content of biocompounds, such as polysaccharides, phenols, and amino acids, among others, has attracted attention. One of the valuable components of brown macroalgae is their polysaccharides, which present interesting bioactivities, such as antiviral, antimicrobial, and antitumoral, among others. There is a wide variety of methods of extraction currently used to obtain these polysaccharides, such as supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), subcritical water extraction (SCWE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE), and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE). Therefore, this work covers the most current information on the methods of extraction, as well as the purification used to obtain a polysaccharide from Sargassum that is able to be utilized as alginates, fucoidans, and laminarins. In addition, a compilation of bioactivities involving brown algae polysaccharides in in vivo and in vitro studies is also presented, along with challenges in the research and marketing of Sargassum-based products that are commercially available.

Removable carbon and storage carbon of golden tides

Due to ever-increasing global warming, ocean acidification, and inshore eutrophication, the outbreak of golden tides with Sargassum horneri has increased in the Yellow sea, where the biomass carbon enters three main carbon pathways: a. Removal of carbon from seawater by salvage, known as removable carbon; b. Biomass carbon is deposited to the seafloor through POC and RDOC through Biological Carbon Pump and Microbial Carbon Pump; c. Re-entering the carbon cycle through the food chain or re-entering the atmosphere through the action of microbes. Estimating carbon fixation (removable carbon) and storage (particulate organic carbon (POC) and refractory dissolved organic carbon (RDOC)) is vital in studying the global carbon cycle. In this research, it was observed that the C content of S. horneri was high, and the utilization rate of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), RDOC, and POC was also high in the eutrophication environment, where only 2.71 % of algal biomass carbon was converted to RDOC, and only 0.20 % converted to POC. The C + N + P combination has a restart effect on the seasonal accumulation of RDOC in relevant sea areas. It is suggested that the salvage and resource utilization should be strengthened to effectively control the golden tide and reduce the substantial economic losses to realize the win-win situation of carbon sink and environmental restoration.

Valorization of Caribbean Sargassum biomass as a source of alginate and sugars for de novo biodiesel production

Since 2011, a massive influx of pelagic brown algae Sargassum has invaded coastlines causing environmental and economic disaster. Valorizing this plentiful macroalgae can present much needed economic relief to the areas affected. Here the production of biodiesel and a high-value alginate stream using Sargassum biomass collected from the coast of Quintana Roo, Mexico is reported. Biomass was pretreated via AEA (Alginate Extraction Autohydrolysis) and enzymatic saccharification via fungal Solid State Fermentation, releasing 7 g/L total sugars. The sugar mixture was fermented using engineered Yarrowia lipolytica resulting in 0.35 g/L total lipid titer at the lab tube scale. Additionally, the capability of extracting 0.3875 g/g DW of a high-value, purified alginate stream from this material is demonstrated. The findings presented here are promising and suggest an opportunity for the optimization and scale up of a biodiesel production biorefinery for utilization of Sargassum seaweeds during seasons of high invasion.

Trace metal content from holopelagic Sargassum spp. sampled in the tropical North Atlantic Ocean: Emphasis on spatial variation of arsenic and phosphorus

We document for the first time, the spatial distribution at basin scale (North tropical Atlantic Ocean) of As, P and trace metal (TM) concentrations in the three morphotypes belonging to the two holopelagic species Sargassum natans and S. fluitans and three morphotypes: S. natans VIII, S. natans I and S. fluitans III. These samples collected in the North equatorial current (NEC) and in the subtropical Sargasso Sea (sSS) (∼25°N, 60°W) were also compared to coastal samples collected downwind Guadeloupe Island and on the strand of Martinique (mangrove and beach). Along the studied zonal oceanic transect, the highest values of As (range 120-240 μg g-1, dry weight, dw) were found in the sSS area where primary production is highly limited by phosphorus. At these stations, the P content of Sargassum spp. was minimal (range 500-1000 μg g-1, dw) as well as the content in Cd and Zn known for their nutrient-like oceanic behaviors and distributions very similar to P. This illustrates for the first time in the natural environment, the higher bioaccumulation of arsenic in Sargassum spp. in P-limiting conditions which is due to the competition in the phosphate transporter between arsenate and phosphate. As compared to samples collected at sea, the Sargassum spp. collected in the strand of Martinique had (1) lower As concentrations (typical range 30-45 μg g-1, dw) and (2) much higher Al, Fe, Mn, Cr and Co concentrations, showing a certain ability of Sargassum spp. to be depurated of its As content in the coastal zone following competitive exchange with terrigenous metals.

Environmental impact of Sargassum spp. landings: an evaluation of leachate released from natural decomposition at Mexican Caribbean coast

Large volumes of pelagic Sargassum spp. have stranded periodically on the Mexican Caribbean shoreline. The aim of this research was to study the mobility of metals through the leachates released into the environment during the natural decomposition process of Sargassum spp. Fresh Sargassum samples were placed in cone-bed reactors: under laboratory and local environmental conditions. The leachate generated naturally by decomposition in both conditions was recovered periodically and analyses of pH, volume, and metal content were carried out. Sargassum biomass was monitored by electron microscopy, FT-IR, and CHNS analysis. The Sargassum biomass studied presented a C: N ratio of 24.39, making it a potential raw feedstock for biofuels and other value-added products. Calculations performed on leachate production allowed inferring that each ton of fresh Sargassum that decomposes at a controlled temperature of 27 °C can produce 316 L of leachate. This leachate can contain 5.67 g of As and other potentially toxic metals (e.g., B, Al, Cu). At the end of both experiments, the biomass that was incubated for 30 days presented a C: N ratio of 28.86, so it can still be used as raw material for biofuels; however, the Sargassum biomass that remained 180 days in incubation decreased its C:N ratio at 8.45 at this point, it can be considered a waste. The leachate generated during the natural decomposition process of Sargassum on beaches or disposal sites represents a high risk of contamination of the Yucatan Peninsula water system due to the high content of arsenic and the presence of potentially toxic metals.

Improvement in Methane Production from Pelagic Sargassum Using Combined Pretreatments

The constant golden tides of Sargassum spp., identified to be a mixture of Sargassum natans and Sargassum fluitans, observed recently in the Mexican Caribbean have affected the marine ecosystem and the local economy and have created the need for solutions for their management and use. The Sargassum arrivals have thus been considered as third-generation feedstock for biofuel. Their potential for energetic conversion to biomethane was investigated, with hydrolysis as the limiting step due to its complex composition; therefore, in the present study, different physical, chemical, and enzymatic pretreatments and a combination of them have been evaluated, with the additional use of granular activated carbon, to determine the best yield and methane quality. The combined pretreatments of 2.5% hydrogen peroxide, followed by an enzymatic pretreatment (enzymatic extract from Trametes hirsuta isolated from decomposing wood in the Yucatán Peninsula-Mexico), was the best option, reaching a biodegradability of 95% and maximum methane yield of 387 ± 3.09 L CH₄/kg volatile solid. The use of a conductive material, such as granular activated carbon, did not generate significant changes in performance and methane concentration.

Fungal Proteins from Sargassum spp. Using Solid-State Fermentation as a Green Bioprocess Strategy

The development of green technologies and bioprocesses such as solid-state fermentation (SSF) is important for the processing of macroalgae biomass and to reduce the negative effect of Sargassum spp. on marine ecosystems, as well as the production of compounds with high added value such as fungal proteins. In the present study, Sargassum spp. biomass was subjected to hydrothermal pretreatments at different operating temperatures (150, 170, and 190 °C) and pressures (3.75, 6.91, and 11.54 bar) for 50 min, obtaining a glucan-rich substrate (17.99, 23.86, and 25.38 g/100 g d.w., respectively). The results indicate that Sargassum pretreated at a pretreatment temperature of 170 °C was suitable for fungal growth. SSF was performed in packed-bed bioreactors, obtaining the highest protein content at 96 h (6.6%) and the lowest content at 72 h (4.6%). In contrast, it was observed that the production of fungal proteins is related to the concentration of sugars. Furthermore, fermentation results in a reduction in antinutritional elements, such as heavy metals (As, Cd, Pb, Hg, and Sn), and there is a decrease in ash content during fermentation kinetics. Finally, this work shows that Aspergillus oryzae can assimilate nutrients found in the pretreated Sargassum spp. to produce fungal proteins as a strategy for the food industry.

Metals and metalloids concentrations in three genotypes of pelagic Sargassum from the Atlantic Ocean Basin-scale

Since 2011, the Caribbean Islands have witnessed unprecedented massive stranding of a pelagic brown algal Sargassum spp. inducing damages for coastal ecosystems and economy. By accumulating heavy metals, Sargassum can play a role in contaminant transportation from offshore to the coast. In 2019, three genotypes of Sargassum (S. fluitans III, S. natans I, and VIII) were sampled in seven stations along a 3400 km transect in the Atlantic Ocean. Concentrations of 15 heavy metal(loid)s elements were analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES). Mean metal concentrations were ranked following descending order: As >Fe > Al > Mn > Cd > Zn > Ni > V > Cu > Cr > Hg. The metalloid As was the most abundant contaminant with a maximum value of 115 ppm, previously observed in the Caribbean area (80-150 ppm). At Atlantic Ocean Basin-scale, metallic element concentrations do not present spatial longitudinal gradients. Genotypes S. fluitans III and S. natans (I and VIII), present differents metal(loid)s contamination distinct patterns.

Cost-benefit analysis of beach-cast harvest: Closing land-marine nutrient loops in the Baltic Sea region

Harvesting beach-cast can help mitigate marine eutrophication by closing land-marine nutrient loops and provide a blue biomass raw material for the bioeconomy. Cost-benefit analysis was applied to harvest activities during 2009-2018 on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, highlighting benefits such as nutrient removal from the marine system and improved recreational opportunities as well as costs of using inputs necessary for harvest. The results indicate that the activities entailed a net gain to society, lending substance to continued funding for harvests on Gotland and assessments of upscaling of harvest activities to other areas in Sweden and elsewhere. The lessons learnt from the considerable harvest experience on Gotland should be utilized for developing concrete guidelines for carrying out sustainable harvest practice, paying due attention to local conditions but also to what can be generalized to a wider national and international context.

Biosorption Potential of Sargassum for Removal of Aqueous Dye Solutions

Sargassum muticum is an invasive species to the coasts of the British Isles, mainland Europe and North America, with negative ecological and socioeconomic impacts. Pelagic Sargassum inundations on the beaches of the Caribbean have also been causing adverse health, ecological and economic effects. The finding of commercial uses of these biomasses may alleviate the costs of removal and control. Both pelagic Sargassum and S. muticum could be low-cost biosorbents for removing aqueous cationic dyes but may not be suitable for anionic substances without modification. This study found that a Sargassum biomass could remove up to 93% of methylene blue and that the species, concentration and treatment (CaCl2) were all statistically highly significant factors (p < 0.001) in its removal.

Pelagic Sargassum events in Jamaica: Provenance, morphotype abundance, and influence of sample processing on biochemical composition of the biomass

Pelagic Sargassum species have been known for centuries in the Sargasso Sea of the North Atlantic Ocean. In 2011, a new area concentrating high biomass of these brown algae started developing in the Tropical Atlantic Ocean. Since then, massive and recurrent Sargassum influxes have been reported in the Caribbean and off the coast of Western Africa. These Sargassum events have a major negative impact on coastal ecosystems and nearshore marine life, and affect socio-economic sectors, including public health, coastal living, tourism, fisheries, and maritime transport. Despite recent advances in the forecasting of Sargassum events, and elucidation of the seaweed composition, many knowledge gaps remain, including morphotype abundance during Sargassum events, drift of the seaweeds in the months prior to stranding, and influence of sample processing methods on biomass biochemical composition. Using seaweeds harvested on the coasts of Jamaica in summer of 2020, we observed that S. fluitans III was the most abundant morphotype at different times and sampling locations. No clear difference in the geographical origin, or provenance, of the Sargassum mats was observed. The majority of Sargassum backtracked from both north and south of Jamaica experienced ambient temperatures of around 27 °C and salinity in the range of 34-36 psu before stranding. We also showed that cheap (sun) compared to expensive (freeze) drying techniques influence the biochemical composition of biomass. Sun-drying increased the proportion of phenolic compounds, but had a deleterious impact on fucoxanthin content and on the quantities of monosaccharides, except for mannitol. Effects on the content of fucose containing sulfated polysaccharides depended on the method used for their extraction, and limited variation was observed in ash, protein, and fatty acid content within most of the sample locations investigated. These observations are important for the storage and transport of the biomass in the context of its valorisation.

Slow Pyrolysis of Ulva lactuca (Chlorophyta) for Sustainable Production of Bio-Oil and Biochar

Ulva Lactuca is a fast-growing algae that can be utilized as a bioenergy source. However, the direct utilization of U. lactuca for energy applications still remains challenging due to its high moisture and inorganics content. Therefore, thermochemical processing such as slow pyrolysis to produce valuable added products, namely bio-oil and biochar, is needed. This study aims to conduct a thorough investigation of bio-oil and biochar production from U. lactuca to provide valuable data for its further valorization. A slow pyrolysis of U. lactuca was conducted in a batch-type reactor at a temperature range of 400–600 °C and times of 10–50 min. The results showed that significant compounds obtained in U. lactuca’s bio-oil are carboxylic acids (22.63–35.28%), phenolics (9.73–31.89%), amines/amides (15.33–23.31%), and N-aromatic compounds (14.04–15.68%). The ultimate analysis revealed that biochar’s H/C and O/C atomic ratios were lower than feedstock, confirming that dehydration and decarboxylation reactions occurred throughout the pyrolysis. Additionally, biochar exhibited calorific values in the range of 19.94–21.61 MJ kg−1, which is potential to be used as a solid renewable fuel. The surface morphological analysis by scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed a larger surface area in U. lactuca’s biochar than in the algal feedstock. Overall, this finding provides insight on the valorization of U. lactuca for value-added chemicals, i.e., biofuels and biochar, which can be further utilized for other applications.

Marine macroalgae waste: A potential feedstock for biogas production

In the present study, marine macroalgae waste, mainly composed by Saccorhiza polyschides, was collected from a beach in northern Portugal and evaluated as feedstock for anaerobic digestion. Batch experiments (500 mL flasks, 300 mL working volume) were conducted at the following conditions: mesophilic temperature (37 °C); 80 rpm stirring speed; 150 mL inoculum (anaerobically digested sludge) and variable total solids content (0.9, 1.7, 2.5 and 3.5% TS). Methane concentration and volume of biogas obtained were monitored during up to 57 days by optical sensors and milligascounters, respectively. The results show that an increase in total solids content up to 2.5% TS led to the highest biogas volume and methane concentration. The maximum biogas yield was 227 ± 4 mL/g VS (2.5% TS, 53 operation days), with the maximum methane content in the biogas being 64.5 ± 0.6% (51 operation days). A maximum methane yield of 146 ± 2 mL/g VS was consequently estimated. At the end of the process (57 days), an average of 43% COD reduction and 46% VS reduction were observed. These results correspond to about 27% of the theoretical maximum methane production. Using 3.5% TS the inhibition of the process was observed, by the decrease in pH, most likely due to the accumulation of volatile fatty acids. The results indicate that marine macroalgae waste may be a good candidate as substrate for anaerobic digestion processes, most probably by co-digestion.

Algae application in civil construction: A review with focus on the potential uses of the pelagic Sargassum spp. biomass

Pelagic Sargassum, usually found at the Sargasso Sea and the Western portion of the North Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, has been detected in many new locations through the tropical Atlantic. The huge biomass found from the African coast to the Caribbean was called the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt and is responsible for the stranding of tons of algae on coastal regions. Despite the environmental, social, and economic impacts, sargassum is a valuable source for multiple uses at the industry, such as alginates, cosmetics, recycled paper and bioplastics, fertilizers, and as raw material for civil construction. This work presents a systematic literature review on the use of algae at the civil construction sector, with a focus on the valorization of the pelagic Sargassum spp. biomass, by identifying the potential applications related to the use of other algal species. The review considered other genera of marine algae and marine angiosperms, resulting in a total of 31 selected articles. The marine grass Posidonia oceanica was the most used species, found in eight published papers, followed by the red alga Kappaphycus alvarezii with four studies. Two articles were available on the use of pelagic Sargassum spp. (S. fluitans and S.natans) for construction materials (adobe and pavement), with potential good results. The literature presented results from the use of marine algae and sea grasses for particleboards, polymeric and cemented composites, adobe, pavement, facades, and roofs. This article provides a state-of-the-art review of algal application in the civil construction sector and points out the main directions for the potentialities on the insertion of the Sargassum spp. biomass into the production chain of the sector.

Species composition and chemical characterization of Sargassum influx at six different locations along the Mexican Caribbean coast

In the last decade, unprecedented arrivals of pelagic Sargassum (Sargassum influx) have been reported for the Caribbean coasts causing severe ecological and economical affectations and remarking the necessity to characterize the phenomenon. In the north coast of the Mexican Caribbean, spatial characterization of Sargassum influx was performed in terms of its abundance, species composition and chemical content using a combination of in situ sampling and remote sensing evaluations. Sargassum influx was detected within the 25 km fringe near to Quintana Roo coast in coincidence with beach-cast events during September 2018. Significant spatial variation in abundance and species composition of the stranded biomass was found for the six localities studied, which was related to the local environmental conditions. Pelagic species of Sargassum were the main component ranging from 78.1 to 99.6% of the total beach-cast (wrack) fresh biomass, whereas benthic macrophytes (seagrasses and macroalgae) were a minor component reaching up to 21% in some localities. The biochemical composition of beach-cast Sargassum resulted spatially homogeneous for most of the components analyzed; only carbon tissue content, ash metals (particularly Fe and As) and isotopic composition changed spatially. This study represents baseline information for the region. Long-term seasonal evaluations of Sargassum influx along Mexican Caribbean are required to define adequate management strategies and exploitation.

Physiological Responses of Sargassum muticum, a Potential Golden Tide Species, to Different Levels of Light and Nitrogen

Sargassum golden tides have bloomed frequently in many sea areas throughout the world, and negatively impacted on the local marine ecology. Sargassum muticum commonly inhabits rocky shores. It is now distributed worldwide due to its invasiveness, and recently drifting individuals have been observed on the coasts of Canary Islands. However, as a potential golden tide alga, physiological, and ecological studies of this species have not been frequently explored. To investigate the responses of S. muticum to light and nitrogen, two key environmental factors in golden tide formation, we established three light levels (LL, low light, 10 μmol photons m–2 s–1; ML, medium light, 60 μmol photons m–2 s–1, and HL, high light, 300 μmol photons m–2 s–1) and two nitrogen levels (LN, low nitrogen, 25.0 μM of natural seawater; HN, high nitrogen, 125.0 μM), and cultivated the thalli under different conditions for 12 days before measuring the physiological properties of alga. The results showed that higher light and/or nitrogen levels enhanced the relative algal growth rate. The maximum net photosynthesis rate of alga increased with the light, while it remained unaffected by the nitrogen. The HN treatment had no effect on the apparent photosynthetic efficiency of algae in the LL culture, while increased it in the ML and HL cultures. The irradiance saturation point of photosynthesis was approximately 300 μmol photons m–2 s–1 with no significant difference among the six treatments, except for a slight increase under HLHN in contrast to the LLHN and MLLN treatments. HL treatment decreased the maximum quantum yield of photosynthesis (Fv/Fm) in both nitrogen levels. In the HN culture, ML and HL led to lower values of photoinhibition, indicating higher survivability in the alga. The HN culture led to higher nitrogen uptake but had no effects on Fv/Fm and the contents of pigments and soluble protein, regardless of culture light level. Based on these results, we speculate that drifting individuals of S. muticum would be possible to form a golden tide owing to its rapid growth rate at light level of 300 μmol photons m–2 s–1, when they encountered the sustained lower light level on the sea surface (≤300 μmol photons m–2 s–1). A high nitrogen supply caused by eutrophication of seawater might facilitate this process. Our results provide an important reference for the prediction of golden tides formed by S. muticum.

Enhancing biogas production from caribbean pelagic Sargassum utilising hydrothermal pretreatment and anaerobic co-digestion with food waste

The recurring inundation of beaches in the tropical North Atlantic by pelagic Sargassum and the associated social, ecological and economic challenges, have aroused great interest in its potential use as a marine energy crop. However, to date, the seasonal availability and low experimental methane potential of these invasive brown seaweeds have hindered their commercial exploitation as feedstock for sustainable energy production. This novel study evaluated Caribbean pelagic Sargassum and the synergistic interactions of hydrothermal pretreatment and co-digestion with food waste at different mixture ratios, on biogas production enhancement and bio-fertiliser recovery. Batch testing revealed that hydrothermal pretreatment promoted the hydrolysis of organics in pelagic Sargassum and food waste, thus increasing methane recovery from mono-substrate digestion by 212.57% and 10.16%, respectively, in comparison to the untreated samples. Co-digestion of pelagic Sargassum and food waste redistributed metal elements and raised the buffering capacity of the digester, facilitating high organic loadings without pH control. Food waste also provided lipids to the seaweed feed which augmented the digestion performance. The maximum cumulative methane yield of 292.18 ± 8.70 mL/gVS was obtained from a blend of co-pretreated pelagic Sargassum and food waste at the weight ratio 25:75. Screening of the whole digestate from co-digestion indicated bio-fertiliser potential. However, the solid fraction necessitates arsenic remediation to meet international soil standard guidelines. The findings of this study are promising and suggest opportunity for the design, scale up and optimisation of biogas systems, equipped with hydrothermal pretreatment for utilisation of Sargassum seaweeds during influx.

Seaweeds as Valuable Sources of Essential Fatty Acids for Human Nutrition

The overexploitation of terrestrial habitats, combined with the ever-growing demand for food, has led to the search for alternative food sources. The importance of seaweeds as food sources has been growing, and their potential as sources of fatty acids (FA) make seaweeds an interesting feedstock for the food and nutraceutical industries. The aim of this study is to assess the potential of five red seaweeds (Asparagospis armata, Calliblepharis jubata, Chondracanthus teedei var. lusitanicus, Gracilaria gracilis, and Grateloupia turuturu) and three brown seaweeds (Colpomenia peregrina, Sargassum muticum and Undaria pinnatifida), harvested in central Portugal, as effective sources of essential FA for food or as dietary supplements. FA were extracted from the biomass, transmethylated to methyl esters, and analyzed through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. G. gracilis presented the highest content of saturated fatty acids (SFA) (41.49 mg·g-1), whereas C. jubata exhibited the highest content of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) (28.56 mg·g-1); the three G. turuturu life cycle stages presented prominent SFA and HUFA contents. Omega-6/omega-3 ratios were assessed and, in combination with PUFA+HUFA/SFA ratios, it is suggested that C. jubata and U. pinnatifida may be the algae with highest nutraceutical potential, promoting health benefits and contributing to a balanced dietary intake of fatty acids.

Biomass composition of the golden tide pelagic seaweeds Sargassum fluitans and S. natans (morphotypes I and VIII) to inform valorisation pathways

Massive strandings of the pelagic brown algae Sargassum have occurred in the Caribbean, and to a lesser extent, in western Africa, almost every year since 2011. These events have major environmental, health, and economic impacts in the affected countries. Once on the shore, Sargassum is mechanically harvested and disposed of in landfills. Existing commercial applications of other brown algae indicate that the pelagic Sargassum could constitute a valuable feedstock for potential valorisation. However, limited data on the composition of this Sargassum biomass was available to inform on possible application through pyrolysis or enzymatic fractionation of this feedstock. To fill this gap, we conducted a detailed comparative biochemical and elemental analysis of three pelagic Sargassum morphotypes identified so far as forming Atlantic blooms: Sargassum natans I (SnI), S. fluitans III (Sf), and S. natans VIII (SnVIII). Our results showed that SnVIII accumulated a lower quantity of metals and metalloids compared to SnI and Sf, but it contained higher amounts of phenolics and non-cellulosic polysaccharides. SnVIII also had more of the carbon storage compound mannitol. No differences in the content and composition of the cell wall polysaccharide alginate were identified among the three morphotypes. In addition, enzymatic saccharification of SnI produced more sugars compared to SnVIII and Sf. Due to high content of arsenic, the use of pelagic Sargassum is not recommended for nutritional purposes. In addition, low yields of alginate extracted from this biomass, compared with brown algae used for industrial production, limit its use as viable source of commercial alginates. Further work is needed to establish routes for future valorisation of pelagic Sargassum biomass.

Presence of Polyphenols Complex Aromatic “Lignin” in Sargassum spp. from Mexican Caribbean

In recent years, the massive influx of pelagic Sargassum spp. has generated great interest in the scientific community, highlighting the urgency of addressing the physiology and biochemical composition of these species. Until now, the presence of lignified cells in the tissue of Sargassum natans and Sargassum fluitans has not been reported. Although ‘‘lignin-like’’ compounds have been identified in green algae, the presence of true lignin in the Sargassum genus has not been confirmed. Our work is the first report of lignified cells forming the secondary cell wall in these Sargassum. This study used histological techniques applied to thick sections for identifying lignin-like tissues in Sargassum spp. The dyes as Safranin O and Toluidine have been used to differentiate lignin and cellulose in conducting tissue and to indicate the presence, absence, and distribution of these compounds in tissues. This work is the initial study of the cell wall heteropolymers structure and arrangement in Sargassum spp., providing insights into the unique cell wall architecture of these seaweeds.

Human Health and Ocean Pollution

Background

Pollution - unwanted waste released to air, water, and land by human activity - is the largest environmental cause of disease in the world today. It is responsible for an estimated nine million premature deaths per year, enormous economic losses, erosion of human capital, and degradation of ecosystems. Ocean pollution is an important, but insufficiently recognized and inadequately controlled component of global pollution. It poses serious threats to human health and well-being. The nature and magnitude of these impacts are only beginning to be understood.

Goals

(1) Broadly examine the known and potential impacts of ocean pollution on human health. (2) Inform policy makers, government leaders, international organizations, civil society, and the global public of these threats. (3) Propose priorities for interventions to control and prevent pollution of the seas and safeguard human health.

Methods

Topic-focused reviews that examine the effects of ocean pollution on human health, identify gaps in knowledge, project future trends, and offer evidence-based guidance for effective intervention.

Environmental Findings

Pollution of the oceans is widespread, worsening, and in most countries poorly controlled. It is a complex mixture of toxic metals, plastics, manufactured chemicals, petroleum, urban and industrial wastes, pesticides, fertilizers, pharmaceutical chemicals, agricultural runoff, and sewage. More than 80% arises from land-based sources. It reaches the oceans through rivers, runoff, atmospheric deposition and direct discharges. It is often heaviest near the coasts and most highly concentrated along the coasts of low- and middle-income countries. Plastic is a rapidly increasing and highly visible component of ocean pollution, and an estimated 10 million metric tons of plastic waste enter the seas each year. Mercury is the metal pollutant of greatest concern in the oceans; it is released from two main sources - coal combustion and small-scale gold mining. Global spread of industrialized agriculture with increasing use of chemical fertilizer leads to extension of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) to previously unaffected regions. Chemical pollutants are ubiquitous and contaminate seas and marine organisms from the high Arctic to the abyssal depths.

Ecosystem Findings

Ocean pollution has multiple negative impacts on marine ecosystems, and these impacts are exacerbated by global climate change. Petroleum-based pollutants reduce photosynthesis in marine microorganisms that generate oxygen. Increasing absorption of carbon dioxide into the seas causes ocean acidification, which destroys coral reefs, impairs shellfish development, dissolves calcium-containing microorganisms at the base of the marine food web, and increases the toxicity of some pollutants. Plastic pollution threatens marine mammals, fish, and seabirds and accumulates in large mid-ocean gyres. It breaks down into microplastic and nanoplastic particles containing multiple manufactured chemicals that can enter the tissues of marine organisms, including species consumed by humans. Industrial releases, runoff, and sewage increase frequency and severity of HABs, bacterial pollution, and anti-microbial resistance. Pollution and sea surface warming are triggering poleward migration of dangerous pathogens such as the Vibrio species. Industrial discharges, pharmaceutical wastes, pesticides, and sewage contribute to global declines in fish stocks.

Human Health Findings

Methylmercury and PCBs are the ocean pollutants whose human health effects are best understood. Exposures of infants in utero to these pollutants through maternal consumption of contaminated seafood can damage developing brains, reduce IQ and increase children's risks for autism, ADHD and learning disorders. Adult exposures to methylmercury increase risks for cardiovascular disease and dementia. Manufactured chemicals - phthalates, bisphenol A, flame retardants, and perfluorinated chemicals, many of them released into the seas from plastic waste - can disrupt endocrine signaling, reduce male fertility, damage the nervous system, and increase risk of cancer. HABs produce potent toxins that accumulate in fish and shellfish. When ingested, these toxins can cause severe neurological impairment and rapid death. HAB toxins can also become airborne and cause respiratory disease. Pathogenic marine bacteria cause gastrointestinal diseases and deep wound infections. With climate change and increasing pollution, risk is high that Vibrio infections, including cholera, will increase in frequency and extend to new areas. All of the health impacts of ocean pollution fall disproportionately on vulnerable populations in the Global South - environmental injustice on a planetary scale.

Conclusions

Ocean pollution is a global problem. It arises from multiple sources and crosses national boundaries. It is the consequence of reckless, shortsighted, and unsustainable exploitation of the earth's resources. It endangers marine ecosystems. It impedes the production of atmospheric oxygen. Its threats to human health are great and growing, but still incompletely understood. Its economic costs are only beginning to be counted.Ocean pollution can be prevented. Like all forms of pollution, ocean pollution can be controlled by deploying data-driven strategies based on law, policy, technology, and enforcement that target priority pollution sources. Many countries have used these tools to control air and water pollution and are now applying them to ocean pollution. Successes achieved to date demonstrate that broader control is feasible. Heavily polluted harbors have been cleaned, estuaries rejuvenated, and coral reefs restored.Prevention of ocean pollution creates many benefits. It boosts economies, increases tourism, helps restore fisheries, and improves human health and well-being. It advances the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). These benefits will last for centuries.

Recommendations

World leaders who recognize the gravity of ocean pollution, acknowledge its growing dangers, engage civil society and the global public, and take bold, evidence-based action to stop pollution at source will be critical to preventing ocean pollution and safeguarding human health.Prevention of pollution from land-based sources is key. Eliminating coal combustion and banning all uses of mercury will reduce mercury pollution. Bans on single-use plastic and better management of plastic waste reduce plastic pollution. Bans on persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have reduced pollution by PCBs and DDT. Control of industrial discharges, treatment of sewage, and reduced applications of fertilizers have mitigated coastal pollution and are reducing frequency of HABs. National, regional and international marine pollution control programs that are adequately funded and backed by strong enforcement have been shown to be effective. Robust monitoring is essential to track progress.Further interventions that hold great promise include wide-scale transition to renewable fuels; transition to a circular economy that creates little waste and focuses on equity rather than on endless growth; embracing the principles of green chemistry; and building scientific capacity in all countries.Designation of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) will safeguard critical ecosystems, protect vulnerable fish stocks, and enhance human health and well-being. Creation of MPAs is an important manifestation of national and international commitment to protecting the health of the seas.

Alginate extraction from Sargassum seaweed in the Caribbean region: Optimization using response surface methodology

Sargassum valorization has become increasingly important as the Caribbean region continues to struggle with the massive growth of the seaweed and its damaging effects. Sodium alginate extraction is one method where the seaweed biomass can be utilized to produce a useful biopolymer. However, current processing generally giving low yields of inferior quality, making it unattractive for commercialization. This article seeks to optimize the extraction process using a Box-Behnken Response Surface Design combined with multistage extraction to obtain higher product yield and purity, as well as giving insights, for the first time, into the physiochemical properties of the extracted alginate from Sargassum biomass. Optimum conditions were found and confirmed through validation, with a crude yield as high as 28 % after 2 stages and a purity of 92 % for purified alginate samples. Characterization of the bleached alginate through NMR studies validated with FTIR, gave an M/G ratio of 0.45 with a molecular weight of 3.14 × 105 g mol-1 and viscosity of 14.10 cP aligned to high gelling capabilities.

Epibiont hydroids on beachcast Sargassum in the Mexican Caribbean

Massive accumulations of pelagic species of Sargassum have generated recent social, economic and ecological problems along Caribbean shores. In the Mexican Caribbean, these events have prompted the study of diverse biological and ecological aspects of these macroalgae. However, studies on their associated biota, including Hydrozoa, remain scarce. This research provides important species observations in an area where data is lacking. The occurrence and percent cover of hydroids on Sargassum thalli collected on the beach at Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, Mexico from April 2018 to March 2019 was studied. Three pelagic species and morphotypes of Sargassum from this area were analyzed: Sargassum fluitans III, S. natans I and S. natans VIII, as well as a benthic species, S. polyceratium var. ovatum. A total of 14 taxa of hydroids, belonging to the superorders “Anthoathecata” and Leptothecata, were identified. In our study, more hydroid taxa were observed on axes of the different species of Sargassum than on leaves or aerocysts. In general, the greatest species richness of hydroids was observed from February to April. Results show that live hydrozoans attached to pelagic Sargassum are transported into the area. This should be considered in future management measures that address the recurring coastal abundance of Sargassum and its associated biota in the Caribbean region.

Pharmacological and Cosmeceutical Potential of Seaweed Beach-Casts of Macaronesia

Seaweed beach-casts are a seasonal phenomenon that regularly deposits tons of algae biomass on beaches, which are usually disposed of in landfills. The present work aimed to contribute to the valorization of this biomass by studying bioactivities that reveal its potential in the pharmaceutical and/or cosmeceutical industries. Methanol and ethanol extracts and fractions from 15 beach-casts biomass were tested for a range of bioactivities. Eight of the most active samples exhibit IC50 values between 11.38 µg/mL and 19.28 µg/mL and selectivity indexes higher than 3.8, against NCI-H1299 (lung cancer) and T47D (breast cancer). Concerning antiaging potential, all the extracts tested presented UV protection, with SPF values above 30, like the standard sunscreen. Regarding aging-related enzymes, 24 samples were tyrosinase inhibitors exhibiting IC50 values from 9.01 µg/mL to 200.09 µg/mL. Eight extracts inhibited collagenase (IC50 < 248.76 µg/mL), two of them more actively than positive control EDTA (IC50 = 59.26 µg/mL). In addition to UV protection, the cumulative effect of antityrosinase and anticollagenase activities shown by the samples suggest that they may play a significant role in preventing skin photoaging. The results obtained demonstrate the high potential of beach-cast seaweed biomass as sources of cosmetic bioproducts with antiaging effects, and of selective cytotoxic metabolites.

Golden carbon of Sargassum forests revealed as an opportunity for climate change mitigation

Marine climate change mitigation initiatives have recently attracted a great deal of interest in the role of natural carbon sinks, particularly on coastal systems. Brown seaweeds of the genus Sargassum are the largest canopy-forming algae in tropical and subtropical environments, with a wide global distribution on rocky reefs and as floating stands. Because these algae present high amounts of biomass, we suggest their contribution is relevant for global carbon stocks and consequently for mitigating climate change as CO2 remover. We modelled global distributions and quantified carbon stocks as above-ground biomass (AGB) with machine learning algorithms and climate data. Sargassum AGB totaled 13.1 Pg C at the global scale, which is a significant amount of carbon, comparable to other key marine ecosystems, such as mangrove forests, salt marshes and seagrass meadows. However, specific techniques related to bloom production and management, or the utilization of biomass for biomaterials, should be fostered.

Sargassum Inundations in Turks and Caicos: Methane Potential and Proximate, Ultimate, Lipid, Amino Acid, Metal and Metalloid Analyses

The Caribbean has been experiencing beach inundations of pelagic Sargassum, causing environmental, health and financial issues. This study showed variations in the composition and methane potential (MP) between the species of Sargassum. The MPs for S. natans VIII, S. natans I and S. fluitans (145, 66 and 113 mL CH4 g−1 Volatile Solids) were considerably below theoretical potentials, possibly due to the high levels of indigestible fibre and inhibitors. The mixed mats Sargassum composition was substantially different from the individual species, being higher in ash, calcium, iron, arsenic and phenolics. The mixed mats produced no methane, perhaps due to the high levels of phenolics. There was a strong correlation between MP and phenolic content. Heavy metals and metalloids were at levels that should not cause concern, except for arsenic (21–124 mg kg−1 dry weight). Further work on the speciation of arsenic in Sargassum is required to fully determine the risk to health and agriculture. Both protein and lipid levels were low. The ‘indispensable amino acid’ profile compares favourably with that recommended by the World Health Organisation. Lipids had a high proportion of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids. The use of Sargassum for biogas production could be challenging, and further work is required.

Element concentrations in pelagic Sargassum along the Mexican Caribbean coast in 2018-2019

The massive influx of pelagic Sargassum spp. (sargasso) into the Mexican Caribbean Sea has caused major deterioration of the coastal environment and has affected the tourism industry as well as livelihoods since 2015. Species of Sargassum have high capacity to absorb metals; thus, leachates of sargasso may contribute to contamination by potentially toxic metals when they drain into the sea and into the groundwater when dumped in inadequate land deposits. Valorization of sargasso would contribute to sustainable management; therefore, knowledge on potentially toxic metal content is necessary to define possible uses of the algae. We present concentrations of 28 elements measured using a non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analyzer (XRF) in 63 samples of sargasso collected between August 2018 and June 2019 from eight localities along ∼370 km long coastline of the Mexican Caribbean Sea. The sargasso tissues contained detectable concentrations of Al, As, Ca, Cl, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, P, Pb, Rb, S, Si, Sr, Th, U, V, and Zn. The element concentration in sargasso varied on spatial and temporal scales, which likely depended on the previous trajectory of the pelagic masses, and whether these had (or had not) passed through contaminated areas. Total arsenic concentration varied between 24-172 ppm DW, exceeding the maximum limit for seaweed intended as animal fooder (40 ppm DW) in 86% of the samples. For valorization, we recommend analyses of metal contents as a mandatory practice or avoiding uses for nutritional purposes. The high arsenic content is also of concern for environmental contamination of the sea and aquifer.

Biomimetic Approaches for the Development of New Antifouling Solutions: Study of Incorporation of Macroalgae and Sponge Extracts for the Development of New Environmentally-Friendly Coatings

Biofouling causes major economic losses in the maritime industry. In our site study, the Bay of La Paz (Gulf of California), biofouling on immersed structures is a major problem and is treated mostly with copper-based antifouling paints. Due to the known environmental effect of such treatments, the search for environmentally friendly alternatives in this zone of high biodiversity is a priority to ensure the conservation and protection of species. The aim of this work was to link chemical ecology to marine biotechnology: indeed, the natural defense of macroalgae and sponge was evaluated against biofoulers (biofilm and macrofoulers) from the same geographical zone, and some coatings formulation was done for field assays. Our approach combines in vitro and field bioassays to ensure the selection of the best AF agent prospects. The 1st step consisted of the selection of macroalgae (5 species) and sponges (2 species) with surfaces harboring a low level of colonizers; then extracts were prepared and assayed for toxicity against Artemia, activity towards key marine bacteria involved in biofilm formation in the Bay of La Paz, and the potency to inhibit adhesion of macroorganisms (phenoloxidase assays). The most active and non-toxic extracts were further studied for biofouling activity in the adhesion of the bacteria involved in biofilm formation and through incorporation in marine coatings which were immersed in La Paz Bay during 40 days. In vitro assays demonstrated that extracts of Laurencia gardneri, Sargassum horridum (macroalgae), Haliclona caerulea and Ircinia sp. (sponges) were the most promising. The field test results were of high interest as the best formulation were composed of extracts of H. caerulea and S. horridum and led to a reduction of 32% of biofouling compared with the control.

What nutrient sources support anomalous growth and the recent sargassum mass stranding on Caribbean beaches? A review

Since 2011, tropical beaches from Africa to Brazil, Central America, and the Caribbean have been inundated by tons of sargassum seaweed from a new equatorial source of pelagic sargassum in the Atlantic. In recent years the extraordinary accumulations of sargassum make this a nuisance algal bloom for tropical coasts. In 2018 satellite data indicated floating mats of sargassum that extended throughout the Caribbean to the northeast coast of Brazil with the highest percent coverage over the water yet recorded. A literature review suggests that Atlantic equatorial recirculation of seaweed mats combined with nutrients from several possible sources may be stimulating the growth and accumulations of sargassum. In the western equatorial recirculation area, new nutrient sources may include Amazon River floods and hurricanes; in the eastern equatorial recirculation area, nutrient sources that could sustain the sargassum blooms include coastal upwelling and Congo River freshwater and nutrients.
