Bimetallic AgPd/UiO-66 Hybrid Catalysts for Propylene Glycol Oxidation into Lactic Acid

Production of eco friendly DME fuel over sonochemically synthesized UiO66 catalyst

The ultrasound-assisted preparation of UiO-66 was carried out at T = 80-220 °C, and the catalytic performances were evaluated in methanol conversion. Also, physicochemical properties were assessed by XRD, SEM, PSD, FTIR, N2 adsorption-desorption, TG-DTG, and NH3-TPD analysis. The characterization proved that increasing the synthesis temperature positively affected the crystallinity, specific surface area, thermal stability, and acidity of the catalysts. Besides, the catalysts' performance was investigated in the methanol conversion reaction (T = 350-450 °C, P = 1 atm, and WHSV = 5 h-1), leading to the DME (Dimethyl Ether) production. Rising reaction temperature increased the methanol conversion and DME yield. The synthesized sample at 220 °C had the best properties and performance with conversion and yield of about 38% and 51%, respectively. The stability test for the UiO-66-220 (University of Oslo 66) catalyst was performed at 450 °C for 12 h, and the activity remained stable for about 5 h. Furthermore, the used catalyst was characterized via XRD and TG analysis.

NH2-Modified UiO-66: Structural Characteristics and Functional Properties

The development of new functional materials based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for adsorption and catalytic applications is one of the promising trends of modern materials science. The Zr-based MOFs, specifically UiO-66, are considered as the supports for metallic catalysts for the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural platform molecule reduction into valuable products. The present work focused on the effect of NH₂ modification of UiO-66 on its structure and functional properties. The samples were prepared by a solvothermal method. The structure of the obtained materials was studied by X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption. Basic properties were investigated by HCl and CH₃COOH adsorption, and electrokinetic properties were studied by electrophoretic light scattering. UiO-66-NH₂ samples with different contents of aminoterephthalate linkers were successfully prepared. A gradual decrease in the specific surface area and the fraction of micropores with a diameter of ~0.9 nm was observed with an increase in the aminoterephthalate content. A proportional increase in the total number of basic sites in UiO-66-NH₂ samples was established with an increase in the aminoterephthalate content up to 75%. At the same time, a noticeable decrease in the total number of basic sites and an increase in their strength with higher aminoterephthalate content was observed.

Incorporated Metal–Organic Framework Hybrid Materials for Gas Separation, Catalysis and Wastewater Treatment

The special features of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, tunable porosity, exceptional structure, high surface area and high adsorption capability enable them to be widely studied in many applications including carbon capture and storage (CCS), biomedical engineering, catalysis and pollutant treatment. Despite these remarkable properties, MOFs are known to be moisture-sensitive, hardly recyclable and expensive in fabrication cost which limits their breakthrough performance in more efficient uses. Recently, extensive studies have been devoted to counter those shortcomings by embedding MOFs with support materials using various series of synthetic designs to yield incorporated MOF hybrid materials to counter their limitations. In view of this interest, this review summarizes the latest developments of incorporated MOFs with various materials, namely, ionic liquids (ILs), membranes and metal species. Pre-synthetic and post-synthetic synthesis methods are also discussed. This review also aims to highlight the factors associated with incorporated MOF performance such as materials selection and mass ratio which could have favorable effects in gas separation, catalysis and wastewater treatment applications. The data indicate that incorporated MOF hybrid materials exhibit exceptional properties including excellent robustness and stability. Correspondingly, in comparison to pristine MOFs, incorporated MOF hybrid materials significantly improve, among others, the gas selectivity, catalyst activity and dye removal efficiency in gas separation, catalysis and wastewater treatment, respectively. In addition, the challenge related to the utilization of this newly incorporated material is mentioned.

Comparative Study of Pd-Ni Bimetallic Catalysts Supported on UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH2 in Selective 1,3-Butadiene Hydrogenation

Selective hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene (BD) is regarded as the most promising route for removing BD from butene streams. Bimetallic Pd-Ni catalysts with changed Pd/Ni molar ratios and monometallic Pd catalysts were synthesized using two differently structured metal-organic framework supports: UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH₂. The effects of the structure of support and the molar ratio of Pd/Ni on the catalytic property of selective BD hydrogenation were studied. The Pd-Ni bimetallic supported catalysts, PdNi/UiO-66 (1:1) and PdNi/UiO-66-NH₂ (1:1), exhibited fine catalytic property at low temperature. Compared with UiO-66, UiO-66-NH₂ with a certain number of alkaline sites could reduce the catalytic activity for the BD hydrogenation reaction. However, the alkaline environment of UiO-66-NH₂ is helpful to improve the butene selectivity. PdNi/UiO-66-NH₂ (1:1) catalyst presented better stability than PdNi/UiO-66 (1:1) under the reaction conditions, caused by the strong interaction between the -NH₂ groups of UiO-66-NH₂ and PdNi NPs. Moreover, the PdNi/UiO-66-NH₂ (1:1) catalyst presented good reproducibility in the hydrogenation of BD. These findings afford a beneficial guidance for the design and preparation of efficient catalysts for selective BD hydrogenation.

Modifier Effect in Silica-Supported FePO4 and Fe-Mo-O Catalysts for Propylene Glycol Oxidation

Currently, catalytic processing of biorenewable raw materials into valuable products attracts more and more attention. In the present work, silica-supported FePO₄ and Fe-Mo-O catalysts are prepared, their phase composition, and catalytic properties are studied in the process of selective oxidation of propylene glycol into valuable mono- and bicarbonyl compounds, namely, hydroxyacetone and methylglyoxal. A comparative analysis of the main routes of propylene glycol adsorption with its subsequent oxidative conversion into carbonyl products is carried out. The DFT calculations show that in the presence of adsorbed oxygen atom, the introduction of the phosphate moiety to the Fe-containing site strengthens the alcohol adsorption on the catalyst surface with the formation of the 1,2-propanedioxy (–OCH(CH₃)CH₂O–) intermediate at the active site. The introduction of the molybdenum moiety to the Fe-containing site in the presence of the adsorbed oxygen atom is also energetically favorable, however, the interaction energy is found by 100 kJ/mol higher compared to the case with phosphate moiety that leads to an increase in the propylene glycol conversion while maintaining high selectivity towards C₃ products. The catalytic properties of the synthesized iron-containing catalysts are experimentally compared with those of Ag/SiO₂ sample. The synthesized FePO₄/SiO₂ and Fe-Mo-O/SiO₂ catalysts are not inferior to the silver-containing catalyst and provide ~70% selectivity towards C₃ products, while the main part of propylene glycol is converted into methylglyoxal in contrast to the Ag/SiO₂ catalyst featuring the selective transformation of only the secondary C-OH group in the substrate molecule under the studied conditions with the formation of hydroxyacetone. Thus, supported Fe-Mo-O/SiO₂ catalysts are promising for the selective oxidation of polyatomic alcohols under low-temperature conditions.
