Organic Thin-Film Transistors as Gas Sensors: A Review

High Throughput Characterization of Organic Thin Film Transistors

Automation is vital to accelerating research. In recent years, the application of self-driving labs to materials discovery and device optimization has highlighted many benefits and challenges inherent to these new technologies. Successful automated workflows offer tangible benefits to fundamental science and industrial scale-up by significantly increasing productivity and reproducibility all while enabling entirely new types of experiments. However, it's implemtation is often time-consuming and cost-prohibitive and necessitates establishing multidisciplinary teams that bring together domain-specific knowledge with specific skillsets in computer science and engineering. This perspective article provides a comprehensive overview of how the research group has adopted "hybrid automation" over the last 8 years by using simple automatic electrical testers (autotesters) as a tool to increase productivity and enhance reproducibility in organic thin film transistor (OTFT) research. From wearable and stretchable electronics to next-generation sensors and displays, OTFTs have the potential to be a key technology that will enable new applications from health to aerospace. The combination of materials chemistry, device manufacturing, thin film characterization and electrical engineering makes OTFT research challenging due to the large parameter space created by both diverse material roles and device architectures. Consequently, this research stands to benefit enormously from automation. By leveraging the multidisciplinary team and taking a user-centered design approach in the design and continued improvement of the autotesters, the group has meaningfully increased productivity, explored research avenues impossible with traditional workflows, and developed as scientists and engineers capable of effectively designing and leveraging automation to build the future of their fields to encourage this approach, the files for replicating the infrastructure are included, and questions and potential collaborations are welcomed.

In-Sensor Organic Electrochemical Transistor for the Multimode Neuromorphic Olfactory System

The olfactory system is one of the six basic sensory nervous systems. Developing artificial olfactory systems is challenging due to the complexity of chemical information decoding and memory. Conventional chemical sensors can convert chemical signals into electric signals to decode gas information but they lack memory functions. Additional storage and processing units would significantly increase the complexity and power consumption of the devices, especially for portable and wearable devices. Here, an olfactory-inspired in-sensor organic electrochemical transistor (OI-OECT) is proposed, with the integrated functions of chemical information decoding, tunable memory level, and selectivity of vapor sensing. The ion-gel electrolyte endows the OI-OECT with the function of tunable memory levels and a low operating voltage. Typical synaptic behaviors, including inhibitory postsynaptic current and paired-pulse facilitations, are successfully achieved. Importantly, the gas memory level can be effectively modulated by the gate voltages (0 and -1 V), which realized the transformation of volatile and nonvolatile memory. Furthermore, benefiting from the recognition of multiple gases and ability to detect cumulative damage caused by gases, the OI-OECT is demonstrated for early warning system targeting leakage detection of two gases (NH3 and H2S). This work achieves the integrated functions of chemical gas information decode, tunable gas memory level, and selectivity of gas in a single device, which provides a promising pathway for the development of future artificial olfactory systems.

Enhancing Sensitivity in Gas Detection: Porous Structures in Organic Field-Effect Transistor-Based Sensors

Gas detection is crucial for detecting environmentally harmful gases. Organic field-effect transistor (OFET)-based gas sensors have attracted attention due to their promising performance and potential for integration into flexible and wearable devices. This review examines the operating mechanisms of OFET-based gas sensors and explores methods for improving sensitivity, with a focus on porous structures. Researchers have achieved significant enhancements in sensor performance by controlling the thickness and free volume of the organic semiconductor layer. Additionally, innovative fabrication techniques like self-assembly and etching have been used to create porous structures, facilitating the diffusion of target gas molecules, and improving sensor response and recovery. These advancements in porous structure fabrication suggest a promising future for OFET-based gas sensors, offering increased sensitivity and selectivity across various applications.

Metal Oxide Nanowire-Based Sensor Array for Hydrogen Detection

Accurate hydrogen leakage detection is a major requirement for the safe and widespread integration of this fuel in modern energy production devices, such as fuel cells. Quasi-1D nanowires of seven different metal oxides (CuO, WO3, Nb-added WO3, SnO2, ZnO, α-Bi2O3, NiO) were integrated into a conductometric sensor array to evaluate the hydrogen-sensing performances in the presence of interfering gaseous compounds, namely carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, methane, acetone, and ethanol, at different operating temperatures (200-400 °C). Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to data extracted from the array, demonstrating the ability to discriminate hydrogen over other interferent compounds. Moreover, a reduced array formed by only five sensors is proposed. This compact array may be easily implementable into artificial olfaction systems used in real hydrogen detection applications.

Detection of Water Contaminants by Organic Transistors as Gas Sensors in a Bottom-Gate/Bottom-Contact Cross-Linked Structure

Detecting volatile organic compounds is a fundamental step in water quality analysis. Methylisoborneol (MIB) provides a lousy odor to water, whereas geosmin (GEO) is responsible for its sour taste. A widely-used technique for their detection is gas-phase chromatography. On the other hand, an electronic nose from organic thin-film transistors is a cheaper and faster alternative. Poly(2,5-bis(3-tetradecyl-thiophen-2-yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene) (PBTTT-C14) features semiconducting properties suitable for organic electronics. However, in order to expose the active layer in a bottom-gate transistor structure with photolithographically patterned electrodes, a cross-linked dielectric such as poly(4-vinyl phenol) (PVP) is necessary. In this work, the cross-linking was demonstrated using FTIR and Raman spectroscopies, as well as high-k capacitors with a dielectric constant of 5.3. The presence of enhanced crystallinity with terrace formation in the semiconducting film was confirmed with UV-visible spectrophotometry, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Finally, for the first time, a PBTTT-C14 transistor on cross-linked PVP was shown to respond to isoborneol with a sensitivity of up to 6% change in mobility per ppm. Due to its similarity to MIB, a system comprising these sensors must be investigated in the future as a tool for sanitation companies in real-time water quality monitoring.

Dual-Gate Organic Thin-Film Transistor and Multiplexer Chips for the Next Generation of Flexible EG-ISFET Sensor Chips

Ion-sensitive field-effect transistors (ISFETs) are used as elementary devices to build many types of chemical sensors and biosensors. Organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) ISFETs use either small molecules or polymers as semiconductors together with an additive manufacturing process of much lower cost than standard silicon sensors and have the additional advantage of being environmentally friendly. OTFT ISFETs' drawbacks include limited sensitivity and higher variability. In this paper, we propose a novel design technique for integrating extended-gate OTFT ISFETs (OTFT EG-ISFETs) together with dual-gate OTFT multiplexers (MUXs) made in the same process. The achieved results show that our OTFT ISFET sensors are of the state of the art of the literature. Our microsystem architecture enables switching between the different ISFETs implemented in the chip. In the case of sensors with the same gain, we have a fault-tolerant architecture since we are able to replace the faulty sensor with a fault-free one on the chip. For a chip including sensors with different gains, an external processor can select the sensor with the required sensitivity.

Impact of Planar and Vertical Organic Field-Effect Transistors on Flexible Electronics

The development of flexible and conformable devices, whose performance can be maintained while being continuously deformed, provides a significant step toward the realization of next-generation wearable and e-textile applications. Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) are particularly interesting for flexible and lightweight products, because of their low-temperature solution processability, and the mechanical flexibility of organic materials that endows OFETs the natural compatibility with plastic and biodegradable substrates. Here, an in-depth review of two competing flexible OFET technologies, planar and vertical OFETs (POFETs and VOFETs, respectively) is provided. The electrical, mechanical, and physical properties of POFETs and VOFETs are critically discussed, with a focus on four pivotal applications (integrated logic circuits, light-emitting devices, memories, and sensors). It is pointed out that the flexible function of the relatively newer VOFET technology, along with its perspective on advancing the applicability of flexible POFETs, has not been reviewed so far, and the direct comparison regarding the performance of POFET- and VOFET-based flexible applications is most likely absent. With discussions spanning printed and wearable electronics, materials science, biotechnology, and environmental monitoring, this contribution is a clear stimulus to researchers working in these fields to engage toward the plentiful possibilities that POFETs and VOFETs offer to flexible electronics.

Sensors for Volatile Organic Compounds

This paper provides an overview of recent developments in the field of volatile organic compound (VOC) sensors, which are finding uses in healthcare, safety, environmental monitoring, food and agriculture, oil industry, and other fields. It starts by briefly explaining the basics of VOC sensing and reviewing the currently available and quickly progressing VOC sensing approaches. It then discusses the main trends in materials' design with special attention to nanostructuring and nanohybridization. Emerging sensing materials and strategies are highlighted and their involvement in the different types of sensing technologies is discussed, including optical, electrical, and gravimetric sensors. The review also provides detailed discussions about the main limitations of the field and offers potential solutions. The status of the field and suggestions of promising directions for future development are summarized.

Stabilization and Specification in Polymer Field-Effect Transistor Semiconductors

The strong and varied chemical interactions between polymer semiconductors and small molecules, and the electronic consequences of these interactions, make polymer organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) attractive as vapor sensing elements. Two hindrances to their wider acceptance and use are their environmental drift and the poor specificity of individual OFETs. Approaches to addressing these two present drawbacks are presented in this Spotlight on Applications. They include the use of semiconducting polymers with greater inherent stability, circuits that add further stability, and arrays that generate patterns that are much more specific to analyte vapors of interest than the individual responses.

Metal-Organic-Framework-Decorated Carbon Nanofibers with Enhanced Gas Sensitivity When Incorporated into an Organic Semiconductor-Based Gas Sensor

Because of their high porosity, metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have attracted much attention for use in gas-sensing applications. However, problems with the processability of MOFs for use in reliable gas-sensing electronics remain unsolved. Herein, combination of the strong gas-adsorbing properties of MOF nanomaterials and organic thin-film transistor-type chemical sensors is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The hybrid blend system with inorganic MOF nanomaterials and organic semiconductors likely exhibits thermodynamic instability because of each phase's self-aggregation, which is difficult to settle without surface functionalization. We propose a novel method to produce an inorganic-organic hybrid sensor by introducing carbon nanofibers as a scaffold. We demonstrate that the carbon nanofibers perform dual functions: enabling the attachment of MOF nanoparticles at the fiber surface, which stabilizes the nanoparticle-embedded polymer layer, and maintaining reliable conductivity for improved gas-sensing performance. On the basis of our characterization of their nanomorphology and nanocrystal structure, the MOF nanoparticles and carbon nanofibers are shown to render a hybrid core-shell structure in the conjugated polymer matrix. This organic-inorganic hybrid system was incorporated into a field-effect transistor device to detect hazardous NO₂ gas analytes, operating in real-time with high responsivity. The prototype chemical sensor holds enormous promise for other chemical sensors.

Simple and efficient visualization of aromaticity: bond currents calculated from NICS values

Aromaticity is a fundamental concept in chemistry, underpinning the properties and reactivity of many organic compounds and materials. The ability to easily and accurately discern aromatic behavior is key to leveraging it as a design element, yet most aromaticity metrics struggle to combine accurate quantitative evaluation, intuitive interpretability, and user-friendliness. We introduce a new method, NICS2BC, which uses simple and inexpensive NICS calculations to generate information-rich and easily-interpreted bond-current graphs. We test the quantitative and qualitative characterizations afforded by NICS2BC for a selection of molecules of varying structural and electronic complexity, to demonstrate its accuracy and ease of analysis. Moreover, we show that NICS2BC successfully identifies ring-current patterns in molecules known to be difficult cases to interpret with NICS and enables deeper understanding of local aromaticity trends, demonstrating that our method adds additional insight.

Electrochemical and Spectroelectrochemical Studies on the Reactivity of Perimidine-Carbazole-Thiophene Monomers towards the Formation of Multidimensional Macromolecules versus Stable π-Dimeric States

During research on cross-linked conducting polymers, double-functionalized monomers were synthesized. Two subunits potentially able to undergo oxidative coupling were used—perimidine and, respectively, carbazole, 3,6-di(hexylthiophene)carbazole or 3,6-di(decyloxythiophene)carbazole; alkyl and alkoxy chains as groups supporting molecular ordering and 14H-benzo[4,5]isoquinone[2,1-a]perimidin-14-one segment promoting CH⋯O interactions and π–π stacking. Electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, and density functional theory (DFT) studies have shown that potential-controlled oxidation enables polarization of a specific monomer subunit, thus allowing for simultaneous coupling via perimidine and/or carbazole, but mainly leading to dimer formation. The reason for this was the considerable stability of the dicationic and tetracationic π-dimers over covalent bonding. In the case of perimidine-3,6-di(hexylthiophene)carbazole, the polymer was not obtained due to the steric hindrance of the alkyl substituents preventing the coupling of the monomer radical cations. The only linear π-conjugated polymer was obtained through di(decyloxythiophene)carbazole segment from perimidine-di(decyloxythiophene)-carbazole precursor. Due to the significant difference in potentials between subsequent oxidation states of monomer, it was impossible to polarize the entire molecule, so that both directions of coupling could be equally favored. Subsequent oxidation of this polymer to polarize the side perimidine groups did not allow further crosslinking, because rather the π–π interactions between these perimidine segments dominate in the solid product.

Synthesis of ZnAl2O4 and Evaluation of the Response in Propane Atmospheres of Pellets and Thick Films Manufactured with Powders of the Oxide

ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized employing a colloidal method. The oxide powders were obtained at 300 °C, and their crystalline phase was corroborated by X-ray diffraction. The composition and chemical structure of the ZnAl2O4 was carried out by X-ray and photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The optical properties were studied by UV-vis spectroscopy, confirming that the ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles had a direct transition with bandgap energy of 3.2 eV. The oxide's microstructures were microbars of ~18.2 nm in size (on average), as analyzed by scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopies. Dynamic and stationary gas detection tests were performed in controlled propane atmospheres, obtaining variations concerning the concentration of the test gas and the operating temperature. The optimum temperatures for detecting propane concentrations were 200 and 300 °C. In the static test results, the ZnAl2O4 showed increases in propane response since changes in the material's electrical conductance were recorded (conductance = 1/electrical resistance, Ω). The increases were ~2.8 at 200 °C and ~7.8 at 300 °C. The yield shown by the ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles for detecting propane concentrations was optimal compared to other similar oxides categorized as potential gas sensors.
