Hybrid Materials Based on the Embedding of Organically Modified Transition Metal Oxoclusters or Polyoxometalates into Polymers for Functional Applications: A Review

One-step electrodeposited hybrid nanofilms in amperometric biosensor development

This review summarizes recent developments in amperometric biosensors, based on one-step electrodeposited organic-inorganic hybrid layers, used for analysis of low molecular weight compounds. The factors affecting self-assembly of one-step electrodeposited films, methods for verifying their composition, advantages, limitations and approaches affecting the electroanalytical performance of amperometric biosensors based on organic-inorganic hybrid layers were systemized. Moreover, issues related to the formation of one-step organic-inorganic hybrid functional layers with different structures in biosensors produced under the same electrodeposition parameters are discussed. The systemized dependencies can support the preliminary choice of functional sensing layers with architectures tuned for specific biotechnology and life science applications. Finally, the capabilities of one-step electrodeposition of organic-inorganic hybrid functional films beyond amperometric biosensors were highlighted.

Nonionic Microgels Adapt to Ionic Guest Molecules: Superchaotropic Nanoions

Microgels are commonly applied as solute carriers, where the size, density, and functionality of the microgels depend on solute binding. As representatives for ionic solutes with high affinity for the microgel, we study here the effect of superchaotropic Keggin polyoxometalates (POMs) PW12O403- (PW) and SiW12O404- (SiW) on the aqueous swelling and internal structure of nonionic poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNiPAM) microgels by light scattering techniques and small-angle X-ray scattering. Due to their weak hydration, these POMs bind spontaneously to the microgels at millimolar concentrations. The microgels thus become charged and swell at low POM concentration, surprisingly without strongly increasing the volume phase transition temperature, and deswell at higher POM concentration. The swelling arises because of the osmotic pressure of dissociated counterions of the POMs, while the deswelling is due to POMs acting as physical cross-links in the microgels under screened electrostatics in NaCl or excess POM solution. This swelling/deswelling transition is sharper for PW than for SiW related to the lower charge density, weaker hydration, and stronger binding of PW. The POMs elicit qualitatively and quantitatively different swelling effects from ionic surfactants and classical salts. Moreover, the network softness and topology govern the swelling response upon POM binding. The softer the microgel, the stronger is the swelling response, while, inside the microgel, regions of high polymer density swell/contract more upon electric charging/cross-linking than regions with low polymer density. POM binding thus enables fine-tuning of microgel properties and highlights the role of network topology in microgel swelling. Because POMs decompose at an alkaline pH, these POM/microgel systems also exhibit pH-responsive swelling in addition to the typical temperature responsiveness of pNiPAM microgels.

Advances in Polyoxometalates as Electron Mediators for Photocatalytic Dye Degradation

The increasing concerns over the environment and the growing demand for sustainable water treatment technologies have sparked substantial interest in the field of photocatalytic dye removal. Polyoxometalates (POMs), known for their intricate metal-oxygen anion clusters, have received considerable attention due to their versatile structures, compositions, and efficient facilitation of photo-induced electron transfers. This paper provides an overview of the ongoing research progress in the realm of photocatalytic dye degradation utilizing POMs and their derivatives. The details encompass the compositions of catalysts, catalytic efficacy, and light absorption propensities, and the photocatalytic mechanisms inherent to POM-based materials for dye degradation are exhaustively expounded upon. This review not only contributes to a better understanding of the potential of POM-based materials in photocatalytic dye degradation, but also presents the advancements and future prospects in this domain of environmental remediation.

Luminescent Hybrid BPA.DA-NVP@Eu2L3 Materials: In Situ Synthesis, Spectroscopic, Thermal, and Mechanical Characterization

A series of homogeneous hybrid BPA.DA-NVP@Eu2L3 materials were obtained through an in situ approach where the luminescent dopant was formed at the molecular level with different contents (0.1; 0.2; 0.5; 1; and 2% by weight). A Europium(III) complex (Eu2L3) with quinoline-2,4-dicarboxylic acid was applied as a luminescence additive while a polymer matrix consisted of a combination of bisphenol A diacrylate (BPA.DA) and N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) monomers. Synthesis steps and the final materials were monitored by NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The emission, excitation spectra, lifetime, and quantum yield measurements were applied for the determination of the photophysical characteristics. The thermal and mechanical properties of the obtained materials were tested via thermal analysis methods (TG/DTG/DSC and TG-FTIR) in air and nitrogen atmospheres, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and hardness and bending measurements. Generally, even a small addition of the metal complex component causes changes in the thermal, mechanical, and luminescent properties. Hybrid materials with a greater europium complex content are characterized by a lower stiffness and hardness while the heterogeneity and the flexibility of the samples increase. A very small amount of an Eu2L3 admixture (0.1% wt.) in a hybrid material causes an emission in the red spectral range and the luminescence intensity was reached for the BPA-DA-NVP@1%Eu2L3 material. These materials may be potentially used in chemical sensing, security systems, and protective coatings against UV.

Enhanced Catalytic Performance of a Ce/V Oxo Cluster through Confinement in Mesoporous SBA-15

To increase catalytic efficiency, mesoporous supports have been widely applied to immobilize well-defined metal oxide clusters due to their ability to stabilize highly dispersed clusters. Herein, a redox-active heterometallic Ce₁₂V₆-oxo cluster (CeV) was first presynthesized and then incorporated into mesoporous silica, SBA-15, via a straightforward impregnation method. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), in concert with scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), verified the successful introduction of the CeV cluster inside the pore of SBA-15. The ⁵¹V magic angle spinning solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (⁵¹V MAS NMR) spectroscopy and differential pair distribution function (dPDF) analysis confirmed the structural integrity of the CeV cluster inside the SBA-15. The composite was then benchmarked for liquid-phase oxidation of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) under mild conditions and gas-phase oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of propane under high temperatures (up to 550 °C). The catalytic reactivity results demonstrated 8- and 14-fold increase in turnover frequency (TOF) values of the composite (CeV@10SBA-2) than the bulk CeV cluster under the same conditions for CEES oxidation and ODH, respectively. These results highlight the improved reactivity of the catalytically active CeV cluster as attributed to the higher dispersion of the discrete cluster upon immobilization within the SBA-15 support.

Zirconium oxo clusters as discrete molecular catalysts for the direct amide bond formation

A discrete dodecanuclear Zr oxo cluster catalyzed the direct formation of amide bonds without the need of water scavenging or dry reactions conditions showcasing the potential of these molecular clusters to become a new class of efficient catalysts.

Tuning the Activity of a Hybrid Polymer-Oxocluster Catalyst: A Composition-Selectivity Correlation

Zr-based oxoclusters M_xO_y(OR)_w(OOR')_z are promising catalysts for the activation of hydrogen peroxide. However, they need to be integrated into suitable matrices to increase their hydrolytic stability and allow for their recovery after use. Polymeric materials can be successfully employed for this aim, since they modify the properties of the resulting hybrid materials, in terms of polarity and chemical affinity for the substrates, improving the catalytic activity. Herein, we report the synthesis of different acrylic polymers based on various co-monomers (methyl methacrylate (MMA), 2,2,2-trifluoroethylmethacrylate (TFMA) and 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxylsilane (MAPTMS)) covalently cross-linked by a Zr₄-based oxocluster, whose composition was tuned to optimise the catalytic oxidation of methyl p-tolyl sulphide. To assess their properties and stability, the materials were characterised via Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopies, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Solid-State NMR (SS-NMR) and X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopies XAS, before and after catalytic turnover.

Development, Characterization and Valuable Use of Novel Dosimeter Film Based on PVA Polymer Doped Nitro Blue Tetrazolium Dye and AgNO3 for the Accurate Detection of Low X-ray Doses

Currently, the uncontrolled exposure of individuals to X-rays during medical examinations represents a substantial danger that threatens both medical professionals and patients. Therefore, radiation dosimetry for low X-ray doses is a very important control of radiation practice in medical diagnostic radiology. In line with this, the current study proposes a valuable dosimeter-based PVA thin film doubly doped with silver nitrate salt and nitro blue tetrazolium dye. The nanocomposite film was prepared via a simple casting method and the different processing parameters were optimized. The performance of radiation detection was evaluated according to optical, chromic, chemical and structural changes after exposure to variable low X-ray doses (0, 2, 4, 10 and 20 mGy). The different film labels exhibited an excellent stability behavior in dark and light upon 30 days of storage. The UV-Vis spectrophotometric study showed a gradual increase in the maximum absorbance as a function of the dose and the corresponding response curve confirmed this linear variation (R = 0.998). A clear structural modification was recorded via X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealing the increase in crystallinity with the level of the dose received by the nanocomposite films. Microscopic surface analysis via SEM assessments revealed a significant morphological change in PVA/Ag⁺/NBT films exposed to increased radiation doses and typical dendrites growing in needle- or tree-like microstructures appeared with a high X-ray dose. Finally, the nanocomposite films before and after irradiation were evaluated via a spectrocolorimetric study and the different CIELab coordinates, the color difference, as well as the color strength, showed a linear correlation with the intensity of the applied dose. This new dosimeter design could, therefore, provide a promising and efficient alternative for prompt and accurate detection of low X-rays doses in diagnostic radiology.

Chiral Phosphotungstate Functionalized with (S)-1-Phenylethylamine: Synthesis, Characterization, and Asymmetric Epoxidation of Styrene

In the present work, an attempt has been made to induce chirality in copper-substituted phosphotungstate (PW₁₁Cu) by functionalization with (S)-(+)-1-phenylethylamine (S-PEA) via a ligand substitution approach. The formation of a N→Cu dative bond was confirmed by ¹³C NMR, while ¹H NMR, circular dichroism spectroscopy and optical rotation studies confirmed the introduction of chirality to the Keggin structure. The synthesized material was used as the heterogeneous catalyst for the asymmetric epoxidation of styrene using various green oxidants to obtain high enantiomeric excess (ee), and the reaction with molecular oxygen was found to give the best ee. Regeneration studies were carried out, and the catalyst was found to be suitable for the same. A probable mechanism is also proposed. A comparison with other copper-based polyoxometalate catalysts clearly demonstrate the superiority and novelty of the present catalyst in terms of the reaction conditions as well as the obtained ee.

Research Progress on Catalytic Water Splitting Based on Polyoxometalate/Semiconductor Composites

In recent years, due to the impact of global warming, environmental pollution, and the energy crisis, international attention and demand for clean energy are increasing. Hydrogen energy is recognized as one of the clean energy sources. Water is considered as the largest potential supplier of hydrogen energy. However, artificial catalytic water splitting for hydrogen and oxygen evolution has not been widely used due to its high energy consumption and high cost during catalytic cracking. Therefore, the exploitation of photocatalysts, electrocatalysts, and photo-electrocatalysts for rapid, cost effective, and reliable water splitting is essentially needed. Polyoxometalates (POMs) are regarded as the potential candidates for water splitting catalysis. In addition to their excellent catalytic properties and reversibly redox activities, POMs can also modify semiconductors to overcome their shortcomings, and improve photoelectric conversion efficiency and photocatalytic activity, which has attracted more and more attention in the field of photoelectric water splitting catalysis. In this review, we summarize the latest applications of POMs and semiconductor composites in the field of photo-electrocatalysis (PEC) for hydrogen and oxygen evolution by catalytic water splitting in recent years and take the latest applications of POMs and semiconductor composites in photocatalysis for water splitting. In the conclusion section, the challenges and strategies of photocatalytic and PEC water-splitting by POMs and semiconductor composites are discussed.

Antibacterial Polylactic-co-glycolic Acid Braided Threads Using Plasma and Coating Modifications for Acupoint Catgut Embedding Therapy Applications

Polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) thread is frequently used for acupoint catgut embedding therapy (ACET), but the poor hydrophilicity and biocompatibility largely limited its wider applications. The aim of this study is to functionalize the PLGA braided thread and improve its cell adhesion property. The PLGA strands are first processed into threads on a circular braiding machine, and then, antibacterial treatment was introduced with and without oxygen plasma treatments. Afterward, functional characterizations such as antibacterial activity (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli), cytotoxicity, cell attachment and cell morphology, histological observation, and biodegradation experiments of threads were measured. Moreover, tensile properties and flexibility of the threads were determined to evaluate their mechanical properties. The modified threads showed rougher surfaces than those of the unmodified ones from SEM observations, and the weights and fiber diameters of the threads increased correspondingly, together with the improved surface hydrophilicity. All coated sutures showed durable antimicrobial function and slow drug releasing features for more than 5 days and good cell viability (more than 75%), according to the standard of ISO 10993-5:2009. Besides, cell attachment, tissue growth, and collagen regeneration of plasma-treated samples were greatly improved compared to those of without the plasma treatment. The threads presented slow degradation behavior after the antibacterial treatment. The threads with only plasma-treated revealed a promising prospect for clinical applications.

Oligonuclear Ti(iv) oxo-alkoxide-phosphonate complexes, produced by reaction of tBuPO(OH)₂ with Ti(OR)₄, are easily topotactically hydrolyzed forming intricate nanostructures.

Hybrid polyoxometalates as post-functionalization platforms: from fundamentals to emerging applications

Polyoxometalates (POMs) represent an important group of metal-oxo nanoclusters, typically comprised of early transition metals in high oxidation states (mainly V, Mo and W). Many plenary POMs exhibit good pH, solvent, thermal and redox stability, which makes them attractive components for the design of covalently integrated hybrid organic-inorganic molecules, herein referred to as hybrid-POMs. Until now, thousands of organic hybrid-POMs have been reported; however, only a small fraction can be further functionalized using other organic molecules or metal cations. This emerging class of 'post-functionalizable' hybrid-POMs constitute a valuable modular platform that permits coupling of POM properties with different organic and metal cation functionalities, thereby expanding the key physicochemical properties that are relevant for application in (photo)catalysis, bioinorganic chemistry and materials science. The post-functionalizable hybrid-POM platforms offer an opportunity to covalently link multi-electron redox responsive POM cores with virtually any (bio)organic molecule or metal cation, generating a wide range of materials with tailored properties. Over the past few years, these materials have been showcased in the preparation of framework materials, functional surfaces, surfactants, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts and light harvesting materials, among others. This review article provides an overview on the state of the art in POM post-functionalization and highlights the key design and structural features that permit the discovery of new hybrid-POM platforms. In doing so, we aim to make the subject more comprehensible, both for chemists and for scientists with different materials science backgrounds interested in the applications of hybrid (POM) materials. The review article goes beyond the realms of polyoxometalate chemistry and encompasses emerging research domains such as reticular materials, surfactants, surface functionalization, light harvesting materials, non-linear optics, charge storing materials, and homogeneous acid-base catalysis among others.

Polyoxometalates as components of supramolecular assemblies

The non-covalent interaction of polyoxometalates (POMs) with inorganic- or organic-based moieties affords hybrid assemblies with specific physicochemical properties that are of high interest for both fundamental and applied studies, including the discovery of conceptually new compounds and unveiling the impact of their intra-supramolecular relationships on the fields of catalysis, molecular electronics, energy storage and medicine. This minireview summarises the recent advances in the synthetic strategies towards the formation of such non-covalent POM-loaded assemblies, shedding light on their key properties and the currently investigated applications. Four main emerging categories according to the nature of the conjugate are described: (i) POMs in metal-organic frameworks, (ii) POMs merged with cationic metal complexes, (iii) architectures generated with solely POM units and (iv) POMs assembled with organic molecular networks.

Three novel polyoxometalate-based inorganic–organic hybrid materials based on 2,6-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)pyridine

Three novel inorganic–organic hybrid materials [Co(btp)₂(W₅O₁₆)(H₂O)]_n (1), [Cd₃(btp)₆(PW₁₂O₄₀)₂(H₂O)₆·6H₂O]_n (2), and [Ag₃(btp)₂(PMo₁₂O₄₀)·1.5H₂O]_n (3) (btp = 2,6-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)pyridine) have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by IR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), elemental analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The most striking structure feature of compound 1 is a 3D polycatenation framework, interpenetrated by a 2D 4-connected sql topology layer and a 3D 6-connected rob topology framework. Compound 2 exhibits a rare meso-helices 3D network with different chiralities crossing coexistence. Compound 3 also holds a 3D framework formed by linking terminal oxygen atoms of [α-PMo₁₂O₄₀]³⁻ anions and silver ions in a 2D metal–organic layer. Compound 1 displays antiferromagnetic behavior. The luminescence, electrochemical and photocatalytic properties of compounds 1–3 have also been investigated. Compound 3 exhibits significant electrochemical activity for the reduction of H₂O₂ while compounds 1 and 2 show efficient photocatalytic activities for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). Furthermore, the three compounds display luminescence behaviors in the solid state.

Three novel inorganic–organic hybrid materials based on 2,6-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)pyridine have been synthesized with different polyanions and transition metal ions.

Tetranuclear Oxo-Titanium Clusters with Different Carboxylate Aromatic Ligands: Optical Properties, DFT Calculations, and Photoactivity

Titanium(IV) oxo-clusters of the general formula (Ti₄O₂(OⁱBu)₁₀(O₂CR’)₂) (R’ = C₁₃H₉ (1), PhCl (2), PhNO₂ (3)) were studied in order to estimate their potential photoactivity. The structure of the resulting tetranuclear Ti(IV) oxo-complexes was then determined via single crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared and Raman spectroscopy, and electron spin resonance (ESR). An analysis of diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) allowed for the assessment of band gap values of (1)–(3) microcrystalline samples complexes. The use of different carboxylate ligands allowed the band gap of tetranuclear Ti(IV) oxo-clusters to be modulated in the range of 3.6 eV–2.5 eV. Density functional theory (DFT) methods were used to explain the influence of substitutes on band gap and optical activity. Dispersion of (1)–(3) microcrystals in the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrixes enabled the formation of composite materials for which the potential photocatalytic activity was estimated through the study on methylene blue (MB) photodegradation processes in the presence of UV light. The results obtained revealed a significant influence of carboxylate ligands functionalization on the photoactivity of synthesized tetranuclear Ti(IV) oxo-complexes.

Multi-Tasking POM Systems

Polyoxometalate (POM)-based materials of current interest are summarized, and specific types of POM-containing systems are described in which material facilitates multiple complex interactions or catalytic processes. We specifically highlight POM-containing multi-hydrogen-bonding polymers that form gels upon exposure to select organic liquids and simultaneously catalyze hydrolytic or oxidative decontamination, as well as water oxidation catalysts (WOCs) that can be interfaced with light-absorbing photoelectrode materials for photoelectrocatalytic water splitting.

The Rediscovery of POSS: A Molecule Rather than a Filler

The use of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSSs) for making polymer composites has grown exponentially since the last few years of the 20th century. In comparison with the other most commonly used fillers, POSSs possess the advantage of being molecules. Thus, this allows us to combine their nano-sized cage structures, which have dimensions that are similar to those of most polymer segments and produce a particular and exclusive chemical composition. These characteristics linked with their hybrid (inorganic⁻organic) nature allow researchers to modify POSS according to particular needs or original ideas, before incorporating them into polymers. In this present study, we first start with a brief introduction about the reasons for the rediscovery of these nanoparticles over the last 25 years. Starting from the form of POSS that is most widely used in literature (octaisobutyl POSS), this present study aims to evaluate how the reduction of symmetry through the introduction of organic groups favors their dispersion in polystyrene matrix without compromising their solubility.

Heterogeneous catalysis by tungsten-based heteropoly compounds

In this review, the recent works on heterogeneous catalytic applications of polyoxotungstates in liquid-phase organic reactions are reviewed.

More versatility than thought: large {Zr26} oxocarboxylate cluster by corner-sharing of standard octahedral subunits

The largest known zirconium cluster with an idealized formula of [Zr₂₆O₁₈(OH)₃₀(HCOO)₃₈] was obtained via solvolysis of ZrOCl₂ in DMF/HCOOH.

Polyoxometalates as artificial nucleases: hydrolytic cleavage of DNA promoted by a highly negatively charged ZrIV-substituted Keggin polyanion

A highly negatively charged binuclear Zr^IV-substituted Keggin polyoxometalate [{α-PW₁₁O₃₉Zr(μ-OH)(H₂O)}₂]^8- (ZrK 2 : 2) has been shown to promote the hydrolytic cleavage of phosphoester bonds in the supercoiled plasmid pUC19 DNA under physiological pH and temperature, giving relaxed and linear forms of pUC19 as hydrolysis products. The interaction between ZrK 2 : 2 and DNA was experimentally proven by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and ³¹P diffusion ordered NMR spectroscopy.

Recent progress in theranostic applications of hybrid gold nanoparticles

A significant area of research is theranostic applications of nanoparticles, which involves efforts to improve delivery and reduce side effects. Accordingly, the introduction of a safe, effective, and, most importantly, renewable strategy to target, deliver and image disease cells is important. This state-of-the-art review focuses on studies done from 2013 to 2016 regarding the development of hybrid gold nanoparticles as theranostic agents in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and infectious disease. Several syntheses (chemical and green) methods of gold nanoparticles and their applications in imaging, targeting, and delivery are reviewed; their photothermal efficiency is discussed as is the toxicity of gold nanoparticles. Owing to the unique characterizations of hybrid gold nanoparticles and their potential to be developed as multifunctional, we predict they will present an undeniable role in clinical studies and provide treatment platforms for various diseases. Thus, their clearance and interactions with extra- and intra-cellular molecules need to be considered in future projects.

Dual Role of Zirconium Oxoclusters in Hybrid Nanoparticles: Cross-Linkers and Catalytic Sites

Organic-inorganic hybrid nanoparticles are prepared by free-radical copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with the structurally well-defined methacrylate-functionalized zirconium oxocluster Zr₄O₂(methacrylate)₁₂. The polymerization process occurs in the confined space of miniemulsion droplets. The formation of covalent chemical bonds between the organic and the inorganic counterparts improves the distribution of the guest species (oxoclusters) in the polymer particles, overcoming problems related to migration, leaching, and stability. Because of the presence of a high number of double bonds (12 per oxocluster), the oxoclusters act as efficient cross-linking units for the resulting polymer matrix, thus ruling its swelling behavior in organic solvents. The synthesized hybrid nanostructures are applied as heterogeneous systems in the catalytic oxidation of an organic sulfide to the corresponding sulfoxide and sulfone by hydrogen peroxide, displaying quantitative sulfide conversion in 4-24 h, with overall turnover numbers (TON) up to 8000 after 4 cycles.

Phosphate Ester Bond Hydrolysis Promoted by Lanthanide-Substituted Keggin-type Polyoxometalates Studied by a Combined Experimental and Density Functional Theory Approach

Hydrolytic cleavage of 4-nitrophenyl phosphate (NPP), a commonly used DNA model substrate, was examined in the presence of series of lanthanide-substituted Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs) [Me₂NH₂]₁₁[Ce^III(PW₁₁O₃₉)₂], [Me₂NH₂]₁₀[Ce^IV(PW₁₁O₃₉)₂] (abbreviated as (Ce^IV(PW₁₁)₂), and K₄[EuPW₁₁O₃₉] by means of NMR and luminescence spectroscopies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Among the examined complexes, the Ce(IV)-substituted Keggin POM (Ce^IV(PW₁₁)₂) showed the highest reactivity, and its aqueous speciation was fully determined under different conditions of pD, temperature, concentration, and ionic strength by means of ³¹P and ³¹P diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy. The cleavage of the phosphoester bond of NPP in the presence of (Ce^IV(PW₁₁)₂) proceeded with an observed rate constant k_obs = (5.31 ± 0.06) × 10^-6 s^-1 at pD 6.4 and 50 °C. The pD dependence of NPP hydrolysis exhibits a bell-shaped profile, with the fastest rate observed at pD 6.4. The formation constant (K_f = 127 M^-1) and catalytic rate constant (k_c = 19.41 × 10^-5 s^-1) for the NPP-Ce(IV)-Keggin POM complex were calculated, and binding between Ce^IV(PW₁₁)₂ and the phosphate group of NPP was also evidenced by the change of the chemical shift of the ³¹P nucleus in NPP upon addition of the POM complex. DFT calculations revealed that binding of NPP to the parent catalyst Ce^IV(PW₁₁)₂ is thermodynamically unlikely. On the contrary, formation of complexes with the monomeric 1:1 species, Ce^IVPW₁₁, is considered to be more favorable, and the most stable complex, [Ce^IVPW₁₁(H₂O)₂(NPP-κO)₂]^7-, was found to involve two NPP ligands coordinated to the Ce^IVcenter of Ce^IVPW₁₁ in the monodentate fashion. The formation of such species is considered to be responsible for the hydrolytic activity of Ce^IV(PW₁₁)₂ toward phosphomonoesters. On the basis of these findings a principle mechanism for the hydrolysis of NPP by the POM is proposed.
