Abstract
In 1973, two major discoveries changed the face of selenium chemistry: the identification of the first mammal selenoenzyme, glutathione peroxidase 1, and the discovery of the synthetic utility of the so-called selenoxide elimination. While the chemical mechanism behind the catalytic activity of glutathione peroxidases appears to be mostly unveiled, little is known about the mechanisms of other selenoproteins and, for some of them, even the function lies in the dark. In chemistry, the capacity of organoselenides of catalyzing hydrogen peroxide activation for the practical manipulation of organic functional groups has been largely explored, and some mechanistic details have been clearly elucidated. As a paradox, despite the long-standing experience in the field, the nature of the active oxidant in various reactions still remains matter of debate. While many successes characterize these fields, the pharmacological use of organoselenides still lacks any true application, and while some organoselenides were found to be non-toxic and safe to use, to date no therapeutically approved use was granted. In this review, some fundamental and chronologically aligned topics spanning organoselenium biochemistry, chemistry and pharmacology are discussed, focusing on the current mechanistic picture describing their activity as either bioactive compounds or catalysts.

Abstract
In the present study, Anderson-type polyoxometalate [N(C4H9)4] [FeMo6O18(OH)6] (FeMo6) was immobilized on amino-modified magnetic graphene oxide and employed as a new hybrid catalyst in oxidation of aldehydes to carboxylic acids. The synthesized hybrid catalyst Fe3O4/GO/[FeMo6] was characterized using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopies (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), Raman spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The results indicated that our catalyst was quite active in oxidizing the aldehydes to their corresponding carboxylic acids in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The synthesized catalyst can be easily separated from the reaction medium and reused for six consecutive runs without a significant reduction in reaction efficiency.

Abstract
Secoiridoids is the prominent chemical class of olive oil polar constituents and are characterized by significant biological properties. They are abundant in different chemical forms and relatively high concentrations compared to other components, while prone to oxidation due to their chemical motif. In recent years, oxidized derivatives of secoiridoids have been reported, either as natural constituents of olive oil or as components which are gradually formed in all stages of its production and storage. The mono-oxidized forms of oleocanthal and oleacein named as the respective acids have been recently isolated from olive oil and unambiguously structurally characterized. Other oxidized forms of elenolic acid or more complex secoiridoids, such as those of oleuropein and ligstroside aglycones are also sporadically mentioned in the literature. No further information is provided since they have not been isolated in pure form in order to be accurately identified. Most of the time, they are generally referred as oxidized forms of the parent compounds and commonly identified based on mass spectrometric data. In the current study, the semi-synthesis of the main oxidized olive oil secoiridoids, i.e., oleocanthalic acid, oleaceinic acid, EDA acid, carboxylic form of elenolic acid, carboxylic form of ligstroside aglycon, and carboxylic form of oleuropein aglycon is described starting from the corresponding aldehydic derivatives, using SeO2/H2O2 as oxidative agents. Furthermore, their presence in a number of Greek olive oils was investigated as well, as possible correlation thereof with quality parameters.

Abstract
Organoselenium compounds have been successfully applied in biological, medicinal and material sciences, as well as a powerful tool for modern organic synthesis, attracting the attention of the scientific community. This great success is mainly due to the breaking of paradigm demonstrated by innumerous works, that the selenium compounds were toxic and would have a potential impact on the environment. In this update review, we highlight the relevance of these compounds in several fields of research as well as the possibility to synthesize them through more environmentally sustainable methodologies, involving catalytic processes, flow chemistry, electrosynthesis, as well as by the use of alternative energy sources, including mechanochemical, photochemistry, sonochemical and microwave irradiation.

Abstract
A mild and efficient green protocol has been disclosed for selective oxidative esterification of various aldehydes over a novel Pd fabricated chitosan-starch polyplex encapsulated Kaolin (Kaolin@CS-starch-Pd) as a heterogeneous and reusable biocompatible nanocatalyst. Molecular oxygen was used as an oxidizing agent to generate water as the sole by-product. A wide variety of aldehydes was converted to their methyl esters in high yields. The process involved gentle reaction conditions to avoid any type of pre-activation. Structural features of the catalyst were determined through FT-IR, FE-SEM, TEM, EDX, elemental mapping, XRD and ICP-OES analyses. The material was found to be stable enough toward Pd leaching. Durability of Kaolin@CS-starch-Pd was further justified by retaining its catalytic activity through successful reusability for several times.

Abstract
In this paper, a simple and clean process for the alkylation and arylation of nitrogen-containing heterocycles is reported. The reactions were conducted using the Q-tube® as a non-conventional technology, in water as a green solvent, at overboiling temperature. The developed strategy was used to improve two steps in the total synthesis of caffeine, as reported by Narayan, and then extended to the preparation of N-decorated xanthines. Finally, piperidine, methyl piperazine, and isatine were proven to be suitable substrates for the protocol proposed herein.

Abstract
Herein, catalytic application of a metal-free sulfonic acid functionalized reduced graphene oxide (SA-rGO) material is reported for the synthesis of both carboxylic acids and their bioisosteres, 5-substituted-1H-tetrazoles. SA-rGO as a catalytic material incorporates the intriguing properties of graphene oxide material with additional benefits of highly acidic sites due to sulfonic acid groups. The oxidation of aldehydes to carboxylic acids could be efficiently achieved using H2O2 as a green oxidant with high TOF values (9.06-9.89 h-1). The 5-substituted-1H-tetrazoles could also be effectively synthesized with high TOF values (12.08-16.96 h-1). The synthesis of 5-substituted-1H-tetrazoles was corroborated by single crystal X-ray analysis and computational calculations of the proposed reaction mechanism which correlated well with experimental findings. Both of the reactions could be performed efficiently at gram scale (10 g) using the SA-rGO catalyst. SA-rGO displays eminent reusability up to eight runs without significant decrease in its productivity. Thus, these features make SA-rGO riveting from an industrial perspective.

Abstract
A simple, efficient, and selective oxidation under flow conditions of sulfides into their corresponding sulfoxides and sulfones is reported herein, using as a catalyst perselenic acid generated in situ by the oxidation of selenium (IV) oxide in a diluted aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide as the final oxidant. The scope of the proposed methodology was investigated using aryl alkyl sulfides, aryl vinyl sulfides, and dialkyl sulfides as substrates, evidencing, in general, a good applicability. The scaled-up synthesis of (methylsulfonyl)benzene was also demonstrated, leading to its gram-scale preparation.

Abstract
Oxidation of alcohols plays an important role in industrial chemistry. Novel green techniques, such as sonochemistry, could be economically interesting by improving industrial synthesis yield. In this paper, we studied the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol as a model of aromatic alcohol compound under various experimental parameters such as substrate concentration, oxidant nature and concentration, catalyst nature and concentration, temperature, pH, reaction duration, and ultrasound frequency. The influence of each parameter was studied with and without ultrasound to identify the individual sonochemical effect on the transformation. Our main finding was an increase in the yield and selectivity for benzaldehyde under ultrasonic conditions. Hydrogen peroxide and iron sulfate were used as green oxidant and catalyst. Coupled with ultrasound, these conditions increased the benzaldehyde yield by +45% compared to silent conditions. Investigation concerning the transformation mechanism revealed the involvement of radical species.

Abstract
At 2.5 mol % loadings using reaction temperatures between 30-55 °C, ortho-functionalized diaryl diselenides are highly effective organocatalytic oxidants for aerobic redox dehydrative amidic and peptidic bond formation using triethyl phosphite as a simple terminal reductant. This simple-to-perform organocatalytic reaction relies on the ability of selenols to react directly with dioxygen in air without recourse to metal catalysts. It represents an important step toward the development of a general, economical, and benign catalytic redox dehydration protocol.

Abstract
Characterization of selenium states by 77Se NMR is quite important to provide vital information for mechanism studies in organoselenium-catalyzed reactions. With the development of heterogeneous polymer-supported organoselenium catalysts, the solid state 77Se NMR comes to the spotlight. It is necessary to figure out an advanced protocol that provides good quality spectra within limited time because solid state 77Se NMR measurements are always time consuming due to the long relaxation time and the relatively low sensitivity. Studies on small molecules and several novel polymer-supported organoselenium materials in this article showed that cross polarization (CP) method with the assistance of magic angle spinning (MAS) was more efficient to get high quality spectra than the methods by using single pulse (SP) or high power 1H decoupling (HPHD) combined with MAS. These results lead to a good understanding of the effect of the molecular structure, the heteronuclear coupling, the long-range ordering of the solid (crystal or amorphous), and the symmetry of 77Se on quality of their spectra.

Abstract
A reaction of bis[(2-chlorocarbonyl)phenyl] diselenide with various mono and bisnucleophiles such as aminophenols, phenols, and amines have been studied as a convenient general route to a series of new antimicrobial and antiviral diphenyl diselenides. The compounds, particularly bis[2-(hydroxyphenylcarbamoyl)]phenyl diselenides and reference benzisoselenazol-3(2H)-ones, exhibited high antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacterial species (Enterococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp.), and some compounds were also active against Gram-negative E. coli and fungi (Candida spp., A. niger). The majority of compounds demonstrated high activity against human herpes virus type 1 (HHV-1) and moderate activity against encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV), while they were generally inactive against vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV).

Abstract
The oxidation of organic phenylselenides by H2 O2 is investigated in model compounds, namely, n-butyl phenyl selenide (PhSe(nBu)), bis(phenylselanyl)methane (PhSeMeSePh), diphenyl diselenide (PhSeSePh), and 1,2-bis(phenylselanyl)ethane (PhSeEtSePh). Through a combined experimental (1 H and 77 Se NMR) and computational approach, we characterize the direct oxidation of monoselenide to selenoxide, the stepwise double oxidation of PhSeMeSePh that leads to different diastereomeric diselenoxides, the complete oxidation of the diphenyldiselenide that leads to selenium-selenium bond cleavage, and the subsequent formation of the phenylseleninic product. The oxidation of PhSeEtSePh also results in the formation of phenylseleninic acid along with 1-(vinylseleninyl)benzene, which is derived from a side elimination reaction. The evidence of a direct mechanism, in addition to an autocatalytic mechanism that emerges from kinetic studies, is discussed. By considering our observations of diselenides with chalcogen atoms that are separated by alkyl spacers of different length, a rationale for the advantage of diselenide versus monoselenide catalysts is presented.

Abstract
Even if water is the natural environment for bioorganic reactions, its use in organic chemistry is often severely limited by the high insolubility of the organic derivatives. In this review, we introduce some examples of the use of water to perform organoselenium chemistry. We mainly discuss the advantages of this medium when the recyclability is demonstrated and when the water can control the selectivity of a reaction or enhance the reaction rate.
