Photosensitizer-loaded hydrogels: A new antibacterial dressing

Bacterial wound infection has emerged as a pivotal threat to human health worldwide, and the situation has worsened owing to the gradual increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria caused by the improper use of antibiotics. To reduce the use of antibiotics and avoid the increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria, researchers are increasingly paying attention to  photodynamic therapy, which uses light to produce reactive oxygen species to kill bacteria. Treating bacteria-infected wounds by photodynamic therapy requires fixing the photosensitizer (PS) at the wound site and maintaining a certain level of wound humidity. Hydrogels are materials with a high water content and are well suited for fixing PSs at wound sites for antibacterial photodynamic therapy. Therefore, hydrogels are often loaded with PSs for treating bacteria-infected wounds via antibacterial photodynamic therapy. In this review, we systematically summarised the antibacterial mechanisms and applications of PS-loaded hydrogels for treating bacteria-infected wounds via photodynamic therapy. In addition, the recent  studies and the research status progresses of novel antibacterial hydrogels are discussed. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of PS-loaded hydrogels are reviewed.

Mechanism and potentialities of photothermal and photodynamic therapy of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) against cancer

The ultimate goal of nanoparticle-based phototherapy is to suppress tumor growth. Photothermal therapy (PTT) and photothermal photodynamic therapy (PDT) are two types of physicochemical therapy that use light radiation with multiple wavelength ranges in the near-infrared to treat cancer. When a laser is pointed at tissue, photons are taken in the intercellular and intracellular regions, converting photon energy to heat. It has attracted much interest and research in recent years. The advent of transition materials dichalcogenides (TMDCs) is a revolutionary step in PDT/PTT-based cancer therapy. The TMDCs is a multilayer 2D nano-composite. TMDCs contain three atomic layers in which two chalcogens squash in the transition metal. The chalcogen atoms are highly reactive, and the surface characteristics of TMDCs help them to target deep cancer cells. They absorb Near Infrared (NIR), which kills deep cancer cells. In this review, we have discussed the history and mechanism of PDT/PTT and the use of TMDCs and nanoparticle-based systems, which have been practiced for theranostics purposes. We have also discussed PDT/PTT combined with immunotherapy, in which the cancer cell apoptosis is done by activating the immune cells, such as CD8+.

Photodynamic therapy augments oxaliplatin-induced immunogenic cell death in colorectal cancer

Colorectal cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers. Immunotherapy has been proven to be a potential treatment option for colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer maintains immune escape by expressing low immunogenicity and following the tolerogenic cell death pathway. There is also emerging evidence that oxaliplatin and photodynamic therapy (PDT) can promote anti-tumor immunity. However, the effect of PDT combined with oxaliplatin on colorectal cancer remains elusive. Here, we analyzed the viability of HCT116 and DLD-1 cell lines after treatment with the combination of PDT and oxaliplatin. We found that the viability decreased significantly after the combination treatment. Meanwhile, we also detected that sinoporphyrin sodium (DVDMS)-derived PDT could amplify oxaliplatin-induced immunogenic cell death (ICD) in different colorectal cancer cell lines. More importantly, the combination of DVDMS-derived PDT and oxaliplatin presented strong immunogenic potential in immunocompetent BALB/c mice in the vaccination assay. Taken together, our data demonstrated that the combination of DVDMS-derived PDT and oxaliplatin is a potential novel therapy for colorectal cancer.

Combined Photodynamic and Photothermal Therapy and Immunotherapy for Cancer Treatment: A Review

Photoactivation therapy based on photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) has been identified as a tumour ablation modality for numerous cancer indications, with photosensitisers and photothermal conversion agents playing important roles in the phototherapy process, especially in recent decades. In addition, the iteration of nanotechnology has strongly promoted the development of phototherapy in tumour treatment. PDT can increase the sensitivity of tumour cells to PTT by interfering with the tumour microenvironment, whereas the heat generated by PTT can increase blood flow, improve oxygen supply and enhance the PDT therapeutic effect. In addition, tumour cell debris generated by phototherapy can serve as tumour-associated antigens, evoking antitumor immune responses. In this review, the research progress of phototherapy, and its research effects in combination with immunotherapy on the treatment of tumours are mainly outlined, and issues that may need continued attention in the future are raised.

A novel 450-nm laser-mediated sinoporphyrin sodium-based photodynamic therapy induces autophagic cell death in gastric cancer through regulation of the ROS/PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway

BACKGROUND

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has become an ideal and promising therapeutic method for fighting cancer, but its common application in clinical practice is prevented by the limitations of expensive devices in light sources and phototoxicity in photosensitizers. The aim of this study was to explore the antitumor efficiency of the novel 450-nm blue laser (BL) combined with sinoporphyrin sodium (DVDMS)-mediated PDT against human gastric cancer (GC) in vitro and in vivo, focusing on autophagy pathway.

METHODS

Cell viability was detected by Cell Counting Kit-8 and colony formation assays in HGC27, MGC803, AGS, and GES-1 cells. Cell apoptosis was measured by flow cytometry and western blotting. The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was measured by fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry. Autophagy was determined by transmission electron microscopy and western blotting. The antitumor effect of BL-PDT in vivo was detected by a subcutaneous tumor model in nude mice.

RESULTS

The novel 450-nm laser-mediated DVDMS-based PDT caused remarkable growth inhibition and apoptosis induction in GC cells in vitro by the production of excessive ROS. Autophagy flux was induced by BL-PDT in GC cells, as determined by LC3 conversion assay, LC3 turnover assay, and mRFP-GFP-LC3 puncta assay. Furthermore, autophagy induction was demonstrated to positively contribute to BL-PDT-induced apoptotic effects on GC cells. Mechanically, ROS/PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway was identified to involve in the regulation of BL-PDT-induced autophagy as determined by transcriptomic analysis and functional studies. Consistently, xenograft studies confirmed the significant antitumor effect of BL-PDT and its favorable safety in vivo.

CONCLUSIONS

The novel 450-nm laser-mediated DVDMS-based PDT may be a safe and effective approach against GC. Our results thus provide compelling evidence for the therapeutic application of BL-PDT in human GC.

Development of Biotechnological Photosensitizers for Photodynamic Therapy: Cancer Research and Treatment-From Benchtop to Clinical Practice

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a noninvasive therapeutic approach that has been applied in studies for the treatment of various diseases. In this context, PDT has been suggested as a new therapy or adjuvant therapy to traditional cancer therapy. The mode of action of PDT consists of the generation of singlet oxygen (¹O₂) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) through the administration of a compound called photosensitizer (PS), a light source, and molecular oxygen (³O₂). This combination generates controlled photochemical reactions (photodynamic mechanisms) that produce ROS, such as singlet oxygen (¹O₂), which can induce apoptosis and/or cell death induced by necrosis, degeneration of the tumor vasculature, stimulation of the antitumor immune response, and induction of inflammatory reactions in the illuminated region. However, the traditional compounds used in PDT limit its application. In this context, compounds of biotechnological origin with photosensitizing activity in association with nanotechnology are being used in PDT, aiming at its application in several types of cancer but with less toxicity toward neighboring tissues and better absorption of light for more aggressive types of cancer. In this review, we present studies involving innovatively developed PS that aimed to improve the efficiency of PDT in cancer treatment. Specifically, we focused on the clinical translation and application of PS of natural origin on cancer.

Nanoparticle-Mediated Delivery Systems in Photodynamic Therapy of Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer (CRC) involving a malignant tumour remains one of the greatest contributing causes of fatal mortality and has become the third globally ranked malignancy in terms of cancer-associated deaths. Conventional CRC treatment approaches such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy are the most utilized approaches to treat this disease. However, they are limited by low selectivity and systemic toxicity, so they cannot completely eradicate this disease. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an emerging therapeutic modality that exerts selective cytotoxicity to cancerous cells through the activation of photosensitizers (PSs) under light irradiation to produce cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS), which then cause cancer cell death. Cumulative research findings have highlighted the significant role of traditional PDT in CRC treatment; however, the therapeutic efficacy of the classical PDT strategy is restricted due to skin photosensitivity, poor cancerous tissue specificity, and limited penetration of light. The application of nanoparticles in PDT can mitigate some of these shortcomings and enhance the targeting ability of PS in order to effectively use PDT against CRC as well as to reduce systemic side effects. Although 2D culture models are widely used in cancer research, they have some limitations. Therefore, 3D models in CRC PDT, particularly multicellular tumour spheroids (MCTS), have attracted researchers. This review summarizes several photosensitizers that are currently used in CRC PDT and gives an overview of recent advances in nanoparticle application for enhanced CRC PDT. In addition, the progress of 3D-model applications in CRC PDT is discussed.

Surface tailored zein as a novel delivery system for hypericin: Application in photodynamic therapy

Zein is an FDA-approved maize protein featured by its manipulative surface and the possibility of fabrication into nanomaterials. Although extensive research has been carried out in zein-based technology, limited work is available for the application of zein in the field of cancer photodynamic therapy (PDT). In this work, we report zein as a carrier for the natural photosensitizer hypericin in the PDT of hepatocellular carcinoma in vitro. Zein was modified through chemical PEGylation to form PEGylated zein micelles that were compared with two zein nanoparticle formulations physically stabilized by either the lecithin/pluronic mixture or sodium caseinate. FT-IR, ¹HNMR and HP-SEC MALS approaches were employed to confirm the chemical PEGylation of zein. Our developed zein nanoparticles and micelles were further characterized by photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The obtained results showed relatively smaller sizes and higher encapsulation of hypericin in the micellar zein than the nanoparticle-based formulations. Phototoxicity on hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2 cells) manifested a dose-dependent toxicity pattern of all designed zein formulations. However, superior cytotoxicity was prominent for the hypericin-based micelles, which was influenced by the higher cellular uptake profile. Consequently, the treated HepG2 cells manifested a higher level of intracellular generated ROS and disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential, which induced apoptotic cell death. Comparatively, the designed hypericin formulations indicated lower phototoxicity profile in murine fibroblast L929 cells reflecting their safety on normal cells. Our investigations suggested that the surface-modified zein could be employed to enhance the delivery of the hydrophobic hypericin in PDT and pave the way for future in vivo and clinical applications in cancer treatment.

Determination of a novel photosensitizer sinoporphyrin sodium in human plasma by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Sinoporphyrin sodium (DVDMS) is a new photosensitizer (PS) and it is used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) against tumor. In this paper, a simple, rapid and specific ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) method for the quantitation of DVDMS in human plasma was developed. The analytes were extracted from plasma samples using liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) after addition of testosterone (internal standard) and chromatographed on an AQUITY UPLC Protein BEH C₄ column (50 × 2.1 mm, i.d. 1.7 μm) thermostatted at 40 °C with acetonitrile-water (0.1% formic acid and 0.1 mM K₂EDTA) as the gradient mobile phase at flow rate of 0.5 mL/min. The detection was performed on an API 5500 mass spectrometer coupled with electrospray ionization (ESI) source in positive mode. The multiple reactions monitoring (MRM) transitions of m/z 1143.6→563.2 and m/z 289.3→109.1 were used to quantify DVDMS and IS, respectively. The assay was validated over the concentration range of 30-3000 ng/mL. Precision and accuracy are in accordance with the generally accepted criteria for bioanalytical methods. The extraction recovery and the matrix effect were investigated. This method was successfully applied to pharmacokinetic (PK) study of DVDMS in Chinese patients with solid tumor after treated with DVDMS-PDT for the first time.

Porphyrin and phthalocyanine photosensitizers designed for targeted photodynamic therapy of colorectal cancer

Colorectal cancer is of particular concern due to its high mortality rate count. Recent investigations on targeted phototherapy involving novel photosensitizers and drug-delivery systems have provided promising results and realistic prospects for a successful medical treatment. New research trends have been focused particularly on development of advanced molecular systems offering effective photoactive species which could be selectively delivered directly into the affected cells. Porphyrins and phthalocyanines have been considered extremely attractive for this purpose due to their molecular versatility, excellent photochemical properties and multifunctional nature. In this review it has been demonstrated that such macrocyclic compounds may effectively contribute to the inhibition of the growth of colon cancer cells and eventually to their photonecrosis. Purposely designed and tailored porphyrin and phthalocyanine derivatives in combination with smart drug-carriers have proved suitable for photodynamic therapy (PDT) and related antitumor treatments. This survey comprises a choice of potentially applicable ideas developed since 2010 involving 9 different tumor cell lines and featuring 32 photosensitizers.

Sinoporphyrin sodium is a promising sensitizer for photodynamic and sonodynamic therapy in glioma

The aim of the present study was to explore the antitumor effects of sinoporphyrin sodium (DVDMS)‑mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) and sonodynamic therapy (SDT) in glioma, and to reveal the underlying mechanisms. The uptake of DVDMS by U‑118 MG cells was detected by flow cytometry (FCM). A 630‑nm semiconductor laser and 1‑MHz ultrasound were used to perform PDT and SDT, respectively. Cell proliferation and apoptosis were evaluated using the Cell Counting Kit‑8 assay, FCM and Hoechst 33258 staining, respectively. Western blot analysis was used to detect protein expression and phosphorylation levels. BALB/c nude mice were used to establish a xenograft model of U‑118 MG cells. DVDMS was injected intravenously and PDT and SDT were performed 24 h later. An in vivo imaging system was used to evaluate the fluorescence of DVDMS, to measure tumor sizes, and to evaluate the therapeutic effects. The uptake of DVDMS by U‑118 MG cells was optimal after 4 h. PDT and SDT following DVDMS injection significantly inhibited the proliferation and increased apoptosis of glioma cells in vitro (P<0.05, P<0.01) respectively. In vivo, the fluorescence intensity of DVDMS was lower in the PDT and SDT groups compared with the DVDMS group, while tumor cell proliferation and weight were lower in the PDT and SDT groups than in the control group (P<0.05, P<0.01). However, there was no significant difference when laser, ultrasound or DVDMS were applied individually, compared with the control group. Hematoxylin and eosin staining suggested that both PDT and SDT induced significant apoptosis and vascular obstruction in cancer tissues. DVDMS‑mediated PDT and SDT inhibited the expression levels of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and Bcl‑xL, increased cleaved ‑caspase 3 levels, and decreased the protein phosphorylation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. Changes in the expression of PCNA, and Bcl‑xL and in the levels of cleaved‑caspase 3 were partly reversed by N‑acetyl‑L‑cysteine, a reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger. Similar results were obtained with FCM. DVDMS‑mediated PDT and SDT inhibited glioma cell proliferation and induced cell apoptosis in vitro and in vivo, potentially by increasing the generation of ROS and affecting protein expression and phosphorylation levels.

Enhanced Production and Anticancer Properties of Photoactivated Perylenequinones

Hypocrellins and hypomycins are naturally occurring fungal perylenequinones with potential photodynamic activity against cancer and microbial diseases. This project pursued three lines of research. First, the production of perylenequinones was enhanced by investigating the effect of culture medium and light exposure on their biosynthesis. Solid-fermentation cultures on rice medium allowed for enhanced production of hypocrellins as compared to Cheerios or oatmeal medium. Alternatively, increased production of hypomycins, which are structurally related to the hypocrellins, was observed on oatmeal medium. In both cases, light exposure was an essential factor for the enhanced biosynthesis. In addition, this led to the discovery of two new perylenequinones, ent-shiraiachrome A (5) and hypomycin E (8), which were elucidated based on spectroscopic data. Finally, the photocytotoxic effects of both classes of compounds were evaluated against human skin melanoma, with EC50 values at nanomolar levels for hypocrellins and micromolar levels for hypomycins. In contrast, both classes of compounds showed reduced dark toxicity (EC50 values >100 μM), demonstrating promising phototherapeutic indices.

Sinoporphyrin sodium, a novel sensitizer for photodynamic and sonodynamic therapy

Sinoporphyrin sodium (DVDMS) is a novel sensitizer discovered by Professor Fang Qi-Cheng and widely used in photodynamic (PDT) and sonodynamic therapy (SDT). We searched databases including PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI, etc. for system review of its progress. We found that, both DVDMS-PDT and -SDT had been proven effective for inhibiting tumor growth and mechanisms involved reactive oxygen species, autophagy, and mitochondrial apoptosis pathways. Material advances enhanced antitumor effects and expanded its application. The safety of DVDMS in animals was evaluated, and metabolic parameters were uncovered. Additionally, DVDMS-PDT also exhibited therapeutic effects on non-neoplastic diseases like psoriasis and bacterial infections. Two phase I clinical trials of DVDMS have been documented, but recruitments had still not been completed. In conclusion, DVDMS is a promising sensitizer for both PDT and SDT; however, there are some shortcomings in previous studies like inconsistent treatment parameters, which need systematic assessments in future. Moreover, more mechanisms such as the role of autophagy need to be discovered. Further evidence of the safety and effectiveness of new materials are needed, and the application in non-neoplastic diseases like actinic keratosis and fungal infection deserves further development. Above all, promoting its clinical applications is the most important goal.

Application of photodynamic therapy for liver malignancies

Liver malignancies include primary and metastatic tumors. Limited progress has been achieved in improving the survival rate of patients with advanced stage liver cancer and who are unsuitable for surgery. Apart from surgery, chemoradiotherapy, trans-arterial chemoembolization and radiofrequency ablation, a novel therapeutic modality is needed for the clinical treatment of liver cancer. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a novel strategy for treating patients with advanced cancers; it uses a light-triggered cytotoxic photosensitizer and a laser light. PDT provides patients with a potential treatment approach with minimal invasion and low toxicity, that is, the whole course of treatment is painless, harmless, and repeatable. Therefore, PDT has been considered an effective palliative treatment for advanced liver cancers. To date, PDT has been used to treat hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma, hepatoblastoma and liver metastases. Clinical outcomes reveal that PDT can be considered a promising treatment modality for all liver cancers to improve the quality and quantity of life of patients. Despite the advances achieved with this approach, several challenges still impede the application of PDT to liver malignancies. In this review, we focus on the recent advancements and discuss the future prospects of PDT in treating liver malignancies.

Anticancer effect of LS-HB-mediated photodynamic therapy on hepatocellular carcinoma in vitro and in vivo

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a relatively safe way for disease diagnosis and treatment that is based on light and photosensitizers. LS-HB is a promising photosensitizer with a light absorption peak of 660 nm.

AIMS

The present study aimed to investigate the anticancer effects of LS-HB-PDT on hepatocellular carcinoma and its underlying molecular mechanism.

METHODS

In the present study, the MTT assay and xenograft tumor model experiment were used to evaluate its anticancer effects as well as its dark toxicity in hepatocellular carcinoma in vitro and in vivo. Reactive oxygen species assay kit was utilized to detect the reactive oxygen species production induced by LS-HB-PDT.

RESULTS

In vitro, the MTT assay results revealed that LS-HB-PDT exhibited significant cytotoxic effects both in a drug- and light dose-dependent manner. The IC₅₀ of LS-HB-PDT on hepatocellular carcinoma cells was 2.685 μg/ml. However, no dark cytotoxicity was observed at the LS-HB concentrations of 0-50 μg/ml, and no light-induced cytotoxicity was observed at the light (660 nm) dosages of 0-40 J/cm². Furthermore, reactive oxygen species could be induced after LS-HB-PDT in a drug- and light dose-dependent manner. In vivo experiment, the tumor inhibition ratio of tumor-bearing nude mice following LS-HB-PDT was enhanced with the drug and light dose increasing. Notably, tumors in 60.0% of mice disappeared after LS-HB-PDT (2 mg/kg; 100 J/cm²), and the tumor inhibition ratio reached 92.3%. Furthermore, the histological results revealed necrosis and thrombus in tumor tissue caused by LS-HB-PDT, which were not observed in the control, drug alone and light alone groups of mice.

CONCLUSIONS

The present study indicated that LS-HB was a promising photosensitizer with excellent anticancer effects and low side effects. LS-HB-PDT induced reactive oxygen species damage in the cells directly and destroyed tumor blood vessels, thus leading to tumor tissue necrosis.

Photodynamic Therapy Enhanced the Antitumor Effects of Berberine on HeLa Cells

In this study we investigated the antineoplastic effects of Berberine (BBR)-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) on HeLa cells and its related mechanisms. The CCK-8 assay and flow cytometry were used to evaluate the proliferation and apoptosis of cells respectively. In addition, changes in protein expression levels were assessed using western blot. BBR at dose of 10 mg/kg was injected intraperitoneally to mice with tumors and PDT treatments were performed 24 hours later. In vivo imaging systems were used to evaluate the fluorescence of BBR. In vitro, PDT significantly enhanced the effects of BBR on inducing cell apoptosis and inhibiting proliferation. The in vivo results showed that the fluorescence intensity in the PDT group was decreased compared with that in the BBR group. Tumor weights and tumor size in the PDT group were less than those in the control group; however, when BBR was applied without PDT, no significant differences were observed between the BBR and control group. The results of western blot showed that PDT enhanced the inhibitory effects of BBR on the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway, that may partly explain the potential underlying mechanisms.

DNA directed damage using a brominated DAPI derivative

Conversion of a DNA-binding fluorophore (DAPI) to a photosensitizer via bromination retains high fluorescence and high affinity DNA binding but now produces light-induced reactive oxygen species directed towards DNA resulting in rapid cancer cell death.

Inhibition of Autophagy with Chloroquine Enhanced Sinoporphyrin Sodium Mediated Photodynamic Therapy-induced Apoptosis in Human Colorectal Cancer Cells

To evaluate the antitumor effect of sinoporphyrin sodium mediated photodynamic therapy (DVDMS-PDT) against human colorectal cancer (CRC) and to investigate the role of autophagy in its effect. Shrunken cells, condensed nuclei and increased levels of cleaved caspase-3 and Bax were observed in DVDMS-PDT treated HCT116 cells, reminiscent of apoptosis. DVDMS-PDT showed better antitumor efficiency in HCT116 cells than Photofrin mediated photodynamic therapy (PF-PDT) both in vitro and in vivo. And DVDMS-PDT caused autophagic characteristics: double membrane autophagosome structures and changes in autophagy-related protein expression (ATG7, P62, Bcl-2 and LC3-Ⅱ). In addition, inhibition of autophagy by chloroquine (CQ) promoted apoptosis, suggesting a possible protective role of autophagy in DVDMS-PDT-treated HCT116 cells, which was proved by flow cytometry and western blotting. The results of xenograft mouse model showed markedly increased apoptosis and significantly reduced tumor size in DVDMS-PDT treated group than Control, and DVDMS-PDT exhibited better antitumor efficiency than PF-PDT. Further, no visible tumor was observed in the CQ+DVDMS-PDT group at the end of the xenograft mouse experiment, which confirmed the hypothesis that autophagy was protective to DVDMS-PDT treated HCT116 cells. Our findings suggest that DVDMS is a promising photosensitizer and the combined use of autophagy inhibitor can remarkably enhance the DVDMS-PDT mediated anti-cancer efficiency in HCT116 cells both in vitro and in vivo.

Natural extracellular nanovesicles and photodynamic molecules: is there a future for drug delivery?

Photodynamic molecules represent an alternative approach for cancer therapy for their property (i) to be photo-reactive; (ii) to be not-toxic for target cells in absence of light; (iii) to accumulate specifically into tumour tissues; (iv) to be activable by a light beam only at the tumour site and (v) to exert cytotoxic activity against tumour cells. However, to date their clinical use is limited by the side effects elicited by systemic administration. Extracellular vesicles are endogenous nanosized-carriers that have been recently introduced as a natural delivery system for therapeutic molecules. We have recently shown the ability of human exosomes to deliver photodynamic molecules. Therefore, this review focussed on extracellular vesicles as a novel strategy for the delivery of photodynamic molecules at cancer sites. This completely new approach may enhance the delivery and decrease the toxicity of photodynamic molecules, therefore, represent the future for photodynamic therapy for cancer treatment.
