Abstract
This study investigates the effects of incorporating ZnO, TiO2, and colloidal Ag nanoparticles on the antioxidant, antimicrobial, and physical properties of biodegradable chitosan films. The research focuses on addressing the growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions that offer efficient food preservation while mitigating environmental concerns. In this investigation, the physical properties including thickness, water content, solubility, swelling degree, tensile strength, and elasticity of the chitosan films were examined. Additionally, the samples were analyzed for total polyphenol content, antimicrobial activity, and antioxidant capacity. Notably, the incorporation of ZnO nanoparticles led to the lowest water content and highest strength values among the tested films. Conversely, the addition of colloidal Ag nanoparticles resulted in films with the highest antioxidant capacities (DPPH: 32.202 ± 1.631 %). Remarkably, antimicrobial tests revealed enhanced activity with the inclusion of colloidal silver nanoparticles, yet the most potent antimicrobial properties were observed in films containing ZnO (E.coli: 2.0 ± 0.0 mm; MRSA: 2.0 ± 0.5 mm). The findings of this study hold significant implications for the advancement of edible biodegradable films, offering potential for more efficient food packaging solutions that address environmental sustainability concerns. By elucidating the effects of nanoparticle incorporation on film properties, this research contributes to the ongoing discourse surrounding sustainable packaging solutions in the food industry.

Abstract
Suitable packaging material in combination with high-pressure processing (HPP) can retain nutritional and organoleptic qualities besides extending the product’s shelf life of food products. However, the selection of appropriate packaging materials suitable for HPP is tremendously important because harsh environments like high pressure and high temperature during the processing can result in deviation in the visual and functional properties of the packaging materials. Traditionally, fossil-based plastic packaging is preferred for the HPP of food products, but these materials are of serious concern to the environment. Therefore, bio-based packaging systems are proposed to be a promising alternative to fossil-based plastic packaging. Some studies have scrutinized the impact of HPP on the functional properties of biopolymer-based packaging materials. This review summarizes the HPP application on biopolymer-based film-forming solutions and pre-formed biopolymer-based films. The impact of HPP on the key packaging properties such as structural, mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties in addition to the migration of additives from the packaging material into food products were systemically analyzed. HPP can be applied either to the film-forming solution or preformed packages. Structural, mechanical, hydrophobic, barrier, and thermal characteristics of the films are enhanced when the film-forming solution is exposed to HPP overcoming the shortcomings of the native biopolymers-based film. Also, biopolymer-based packaging mostly PLA based when exposed to HPP at low temperature showed no significant deviation in packaging properties indicating the suitability of their applications. HPP may induce the migration of packaging additives and thus should be thoroughly studied. Overall, HPP can be one way to enhance the properties of biopolymer-based films and can also be used for packaging food materials intended for HPP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Our living environment is being increasingly polluted by petroleum-based plastics and there is an increasing demand for biodegradable food packaging. In this study, the effect of various ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) treatments (0, 200 and 400 MPa) on the microstructure and thermal, barrier and mechanical properties of poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/ZnO nanocomposite films was studied. RESULTS The film-forming solution was processed using UHP technology. The crystallinity, strength and stiffness of the composite film after UHP treatment increased. In addition, barrier property analysis showed that the UHP treatment significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the oxygen permeability and water vapor permeability (WVP) coefficient of the PLA/ZnO nanocomposite film. Furthermore, the WVP value of the film treated at 400 MPa (50 g kg-1 nano-ZnO content) was the lowest and reduced by 47.3% compared with that of pure PLA film. The improvement in these properties might be due to the interaction between nano-ZnO and PLA matrix promoted by UHP treatment. CONCLUSIONS Therefore, the application of UHP technology on the film-forming solution could improve the crystallinity and functional properties of the nanocomposite film, and has great potential in the production of food packaging films with ideal functions. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
A critical lack of personal protective equipment has occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Polylactic acid (PLA), a polyester made from renewable natural resources, can be exploited for 3D printing of protective face masks using the Fused Deposition Modelling technique. Since the possible high porosity of this material raised questions regarding its suitability for protection against viruses, we have investigated its microstructure using scanning electron microscopy and aerosol generator and photometer certified as the test system according to the standards EN 143 and EN 149. Moreover, the efficiency of decontaminating PLA surfaces by conventional chemical disinfectants including 96% ethanol, 70% isopropanol, and a commercial disinfectant containing 0.85% sodium hypochlorite has been determined. We confirmed that the structure of PLA protective masks is compact and can be considered a sufficient barrier protection against particles of a size corresponding to microorganisms including viruses. Complete decontamination of PLA surfaces from externally applied Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans and SARS-CoV-2 was achieved using all disinfectants tested, and human adenovirus was completely inactivated by sodium hypochlorite-containing disinfectant. Natural contamination of PLA masks worn by test persons was decontaminated easily and efficiently by ethanol. No disinfectant caused major changes to the PLA surface properties, and the pore size did not change despite severe mechanical damage of the surface. Therefore, PLA may be regarded as a suitable material for 3D printing of protective masks during the current or future pandemic crises.

Abstract
To study the relationship between performance changes and nanoparticles migration of the composite film at different migration stages, the poly (lactic acid) (PLA)/nano-TiO2 composite film treated by high pressure was immersed in 50% (v/v) ethanol solution for 45 days at 40 °C, and the film characteristics and migration behavior were analyzed. The results showed that the migration of the composite film with the highest loading of nano-TiO2 (20 wt. %) in alcoholic food simulated solution was far less than 10 mg/kg during the 45-day migration process. Although with the increase of migration time, the micro-morphology of composite film became rougher, the crystallinity decreased and the gas permeability increased, but the internal crystal structure of the composite film remained basically unchanged. The PLA/nano-TiO2 composite films treated by high pressure treatment were relatively stable, and had good performance and migration behavior in alcoholic food simulated solution, the nanocomposite film after high pressure treatment could be used to reduce nano-TiO2 particle migration and subsequently reduce human exposure as the packaging film for the packaging of alcoholic food, which provide a theoretical basis for the applications of high pressure treatment of PLA/nano-TiO2 composite films in food packaging material and broaden its application prospects.
