Abstract
Economic growth and health awareness spotlight opportunities and challenges in the food industry, particularly with decreasing arable land, climate change, dwindling freshwater resources, and pollution affecting traditional protein sources. Microalgae have emerged as a promising alternative, with higher protein content, better nutritional quality, and greater environmental resilience compared to conventional crops. They offer a protein balance comparable to meat, making them a sustainable protein source with health benefits like antioxidants, cardiovascular support, and anti-inflammatory properties. Improving the protein content of microalgae through optimized cultivation techniques is crucial to fully realize its potential as a novel food source. While there are already microalgae-based food products in the market, challenges remain in utilizing microalgal protein for widespread food production, emphasizing the need for further research. This review article explores the impact of microalgae culture conditions on protein content, the physicochemical and nutritional characteristics of microalgal protein, the health advantages of microalgal proteins and their derivatives, as well as research on separating and purifying microalgal proteins and their derivatives. It also delves into the current opportunities and obstacles of microalgal proteins and their derivatives as food, highlighting the potential for investigating the link between microalgal protein food and human health.

Abstract
Arthrospira platensis has been utilized as a food source since ancient times due to its rich nutrient profile. In recent years, its popularity as a dietary supplement has soared, especially due to the presence of a water-soluble phycobiliprotein, C-phycocyanin C (C-PC), which is abundant and notable for its fluorescent properties. C-PC contains the chromophore phycocyanobilin B (PCB-B), a tetrapyrrole molecule, that is why it plays a dual role as a food colorant and as nutraceutical. However, comprehensive studies have mostly evaluated C-PC's broader health-promoting properties, particularly its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects, which are linked to its ability to contrast oxidative stress and related pathological conditions. That is why this review explores recent advancements in optimizing culture conditions to enhance C-PC and PCB-B production, with a particular emphasis on novel extraction and purification techniques that increase yield and bioactivity. This focus on efficient production methods is crucial for expanding the commercial and therapeutic applications of C-PC, contributing to its growing relevance in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Phycocyanin is a highly valued pigment present in Spirulina platensis biomass with applications in the food industry in terms of biorefinery concepts; specifically, its antioxidant and antimicrobial capacity are an advantage that could be incorporated into a food matrix. This study aims to use rice husk as an alternative culture medium for S. platensis biomass growth and phycocyanin extraction by ohmic heating processing using a 3D-printed reactor. S. platensis was cultivated in rice husk extract (RHE) from 0-100% (v/v). The highest content of microalgal biomass was 1.75 ± 0.01 g/L, with a specific growth rate of 0.125 ± 0.01 h-1. For the phycocyanin extraction under an ohmic heating process, a 3D-printed reactor was designed and built. To optimize phycocyanin extraction, a central composite rotatable design (CCDR) was evaluated, with three factors: time (min), temperature (°C), and pH. The highest phycocyanin content was 75.80 ± 0.98 mg/g in S. platensis biomass grown with rice husk extract. Ohmic heating is a promising method for rapid phycocyanin extraction, and rice husk as a culture medium is an alternative for the growth of S. platensis biomass in the integration of second- and third-generation biorefineries.

Abstract
Cell-based therapy has become an achievable choice in regenerative medicines, particularly for musculoskeletal disorders. Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) are an outstanding resource because of their ability and functions. Nevertheless, the use of cells for treatment comes with difficulties in operation and safety. The immunological barrier is also a major limitation of cell therapy, which can lead to unexpected results. Cell-derived products, such as cell extracts, have gained a lot of attention to overcome these limitations. The goal of this study was to optimize the production of ASC-osteoblast extracts as well as their involvement in osteogenesis. The extracts were prepared using a freeze-thaw method with varying temperatures and durations. Overall, osteogenic-associated proteins and osteoinductive potential of the extracts prepared from the osteogenic-induced ASCs were assessed. Our results demonstrated that the freeze-thaw approach is practicable for cell extracts production, with minor differences in temperature and duration having no effect on protein concentration. The ASC-osteoblast extracts contain a significant level of essential specialized proteins that promote osteogenicity. Hence, the freeze-thaw method is applicable for extract preparation and ASC-osteoblast extracts may be beneficial as an optional facilitating biologics in bone anabolic treatment and bone regeneration.

Abstract
Spirulina platensis has a wide range of activities, notably antibacterial property against food pathogens. This study investigates the antibacterial activity of S. platensis extract on Total Mesophilic and Psychrophilic Aerobic Bacteria. The results were compared using statistical analysis and the predicted model values using artificial intelligence-based models such as artificial neural network (ANN) and adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) Models. The extraction of spirulina was done by using the freeze-thaw method with a concentration of 0.5, 1 and 5% w/v. Before the application of the extract, initial microbial load of fillets was analyzed the and the results were used as control. After application analysis was performed at 1, 24 and 48 h of storage at 4 °C. Based on the statistical analysis result the S. platensis extracts' antimicrobial activity over TMAB of fresh tilapia fish fillets at 1, 24 and 48 h was using EA from 2.5 log10 CFU/g during the control stage to 1.8, 1.1 and 0.7 log10 CFU/g respectively whereas EB and EC was from 2.1 and 2.2 log10 CFU/g at control to 1.5, 0.8, 0.5 log10 CFU/g and 1.23, 0.6 and 0.32 log10 CFU/g respectively at the specified hour interval. Similarly, the three extracts over TPAB were from 2.8 log10 CFU/g at control time to 2.1, 1.5 and 0.9 in EA, while using EB reduces from 2.8 log10 CFU/g to 1.9, 1.3 and 0.8 log10 CFU/g at 1, 24 and 48 h respectively. Although EC presented the reduction from 1.9 log10 CFU/g to 1.4, 1 and 0.5 log10 CFU/g. This was supported by ANN and ANFIS models prediction.

Abstract
Nutraceutical supplements provide health benefits, such as fulfilling the lack of nutrients in the human body or being utilized to treat or cure certain diseases. As the world population is growing, certain countries are experiencing food crisis challenges, causing natural foods are not sustainable to be used for nutraceutical production because it will require large-scale of food supply to produce enriched nutraceutics. The high demand for abundant nutritional compounds has made microalgae a reliable source as they can synthesize high-value molecules through photosynthetic activities. However, some microalgae species are limited in growth and unable to accumulate a significant amount of biomass due to several factors related to environmental conditions. Therefore, adding nanoparticles (NPs) as a photocatalyst is considered to enhance the yield rate of microalgae in an energy-saving and economical way. This review focuses on the composition of microalgal biomass for nutraceutical production, the health perspectives of nutritional compounds on humans, and the application of nanotechnology on microalgae for improved production and harvesting. The results obtained show that microalgal-based compounds indeed have better nutrients content than natural foods. However, nanotechnology must be further comprehended to make them non-hazardous and sustainable.

Abstract
Phycoerythrin (PE) is a pink/red-colored pigment found in rhodophytes, cryptophytes, and blue-green algae (cyanobacteria). The interest in PE is emerging from its role in delivering health benefits. Unfortunately, the current cyanobacterial-PE (C-PE) knowledge is still in the infant stage. It is essential to acquire a more comprehensive understanding of C-PE. This study aimed to review the C-PE structure, up and downstream processes of C-PE, application of C-PE, and strategies to enhance its stability and market value. In addition, this study also presented a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis on C-PE. Cyanobacteria appeared to be the more promising PE producers compared to rhodophytes, cryptophytes, and macroalgae. Green/blue light is preferred to accumulate higher PE content in cyanobacteria. Currently, the prominent C-PE extraction method is repeated freezing-thawing. A combination of precipitation and chromatography approaches is proposed to obtain greater purity of C-PE. C-PE has been widely exploited in various fields, such as nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, therapeutics, cosmetics, biotechnology, food, and feed, owing to its bioactivities and fluorescent properties. This review provides insight into the state-of-art nature of C-PE and advances a step further in commercializing this prospective pigment.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens. A novel approach needs to be followed to combat these pathogens in an ecofriendly manner. Cyanobacterial extracts were previously proven to be affective as antimicrobial agents. To capitalize on this, laser treatments were used to increase their antimicrobial efficacy. Two cyanobacterial strains isolated from Al-Ahsa were identified using molecular methods. Their aqueous extracts were used in the antimicrobial bioassay for these two bacterial pathogens. The first group of aqueous extracts were exposed directly to laser treatment and used in antibacterial bioassay. In parallel, the cyanobacterial biomass of the two isolates was exposed to the laser, then aqueous extracts were prepared. The third group of extracts were not exposed to the laser and were used as a control. Time and distance were the factors tested as they affected the dose of the laser, both individually and in combination. In addition, accessory pigment estimation in extracts before and after laser exposure of extracts was also determined. The two cyanobacterial strains were identified as Thermoleptolyngbya sp. and Leptolyngbya sp. and the molecular analysis also confirmed the identity of pathogenic bacteria. The untreated cyanobacterial aqueous extracts had little effect against the two bacterial strains. In contrast, the extract directly exposed to the laser was significantly more effective, with an inhibition zone of 22.0 mm in the case of a time of 32 min and distance of 10 cm against S. aureus. Accessory pigment composition increased in extracts directly exposed to the laser. This is the first case report on the effect of lasers on enhancing the antimicrobial profile of cyanobacterial extracts against SA and MRSA bacterial pathogens, as well as enhancing accessory pigment content. The laser dose that was most effective was that of 32 min time and 10 cm distance of Thermoleptolyngbya sp. extract directly exposed to the laser, which highlights the importance of time for increasing the laser dose and consequently increasing its antimicrobial impact.

Abstract
Currently, the use of synthetic pigments in foods is restricted since synthetic pigments are proven and suspected to be harmful to human health. Phycobiliproteins (PBPs), existed in phycobilisomes (PBSs) of algae, are a kind of pigment-proteins with intense color. The specific color of PBPs (red and blue) is given by the water-soluble open-chained tetrapyrrole chromophore (phycobilin) that covalently attaches to the apo-protein via thioether linkages to cysteine residues. According to the spectral characteristics of PBPs, they can be categorized as phycoerythrins (PEs), phycocyanins (PCs), allophycocyanins (APCs), and phycoerythrocyanins (PECs). PBPs can be used as natural food colorants, fluorescent substances, and bioactive ingredients in food applications owing to their color characteristics and physiological activities. This paper mainly summarizes the extraction and purification methods of the PBPs and reviews their characteristics and applications. Moreover, the use of several strategies such as additives, microencapsulation, electrospray, and cross-linking to improve the stability and bioavailability of PBPs as well as the future outlooks of PBPs as natural colorants in food commercialization are elucidated.

Abstract
Lately, microalgae-based value-added products have been gaining market value because they moderate the dependency on fossil fuel and high-value chemical products. To this end, the purpose of this study was to develop prebiotic products from the microalgae Spirulina sp. The microalgae were isolated from the fresh water and characterized at the molecular level. The dry biomass, chlorophyll content, phycocyanin, cytotoxicity and antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of the isolated strains were analyzed. Moreover, value-added products like Spirulina cake, chocolate, tea, vermicelli and Spirulina juice were made for a vulnerable population due to high nutritive value.

Abstract
Phycobiliproteins are gaining popularity as long-term, high-value natural products which can be alternatives to synthetic products. This study analyzed research trends of phycobiliproteins from 1909 to 2020 using a bibliometric approach based on the Scopus database. The current findings showed that phycobiliprotein is a burgeoning field in terms of publications outputs with "biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology" as the most related and focused subject. The Journal of Applied Phycology was the most productive journal in publishing articles on phycobiliproteins. Although the United States of America (U.S.A.) contributed the most publications on phycobiliproteins, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (China) is the institution with the largest number of publications. The most productive author on phycobiliproteins was Glazer, Alexander N. (U.S.A.). The U.S.A. and Germany were at the forefront of international collaboration in this field. According to the keyword analysis, the most explored theme was the optimization of microalgae culture parameters and phycobiliproteins extraction methods. The bioactivity properties and extraction of phycobiliproteins were identified as future research priorities. Synechococcus and Arthrospira were the most cited genera. This study serves as an initial step in fortifying the phycobiliproteins market, which is expected to exponentially expand in the future. Moreover, further research and global collaboration are necessary to commercialize phycobiliproteins and increase the consumer acceptability of the pigments and their products.

Abstract
Fucoxanthin is a major carotenoid in brown macroalgae and diatoms that possesses a broad spectrum of health benefits. This review evaluated the research trends of the fucoxanthin field from 1928 to June 2021 using the bibliometric method. The present findings unraveled that the fucoxanthin field has grown quickly in recent years with a total of 2080 publications. Japan was the most active country in producing fucoxanthin publications. Three Japan institutes were listed in the top ten productive institutions, with Hokkaido University being the most prominent institutional contributor in publishing fucoxanthin articles. The most relevant subject area on fucoxanthin was the agricultural and biological sciences category, while most fucoxanthin articles were published in Marine Drugs. A total of four research concepts emerged based on the bibliometric keywords analysis: “bioactivities”, “photosynthesis”, “optimization of process’’, and “environment”. The “bioactivities” of fucoxanthin was identified as the priority in future research. The current analysis highlighted the importance of collaboration and suggested that global collaboration could be the key to valorizing and efficiently boosting the consumer acceptability of fucoxanthin. The present bibliometric analysis offers valuable insights into the research trends of fucoxanthin to construct a better future development of this treasurable carotenoid.

Abstract
Simple Summary Microalgae are increasingly recognized as a source of valuable biomass with numerous health benefits. Cleaning of marine microalgal biomass is very crucial for microalgal studies as the salt on the microalgae cells will lead to overestimation of biomass determination. Incomplete washing of salt from microalgae could also interfere with the nutritional analyses. The biomass, especially dry weight, has been utilized for nutritional or compositional evaluation. Although standard methods of marine microalgal dry weight determination are available, these methods did not provide comprehensive details, and the parameters vary among themselves. Without a standard method, a comparison of results among previous studies can be misleading and unreliable. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate and determine the ideal setting of several parameters in the marine microalgal dry weight determination for laboratory-scale culture. The present findings could assist in developing a standardized protocol to ensure a high quality of biomass for microalgal studies. Abstract Microalgal biomass is one of the crucial criteria in microalgal studies. Many reported methods, even the well-established protocol on microalgal dry weight (DW) determination, vary greatly, and reliable comparative assessment amongst published results could be problematic. This study aimed to determine the best condition of critical parameters in marine microalgal DW determination for laboratory-scale culture using four different marine microalgal species. These parameters included the washing process, grades of glass microfiber filter (GMF), GMF pretreatment conditions, washing agent (ammonium formate) concentrations, culture: washing agent ratios (v:v) and washing cycles. GMF grade GF/A with precombustion at 450 °C provided the most satisfactory DW and the highest ash-free dry weight (AFDW)/DW ratio. Furthermore, 0.05 M ammonium formate with 1:2 culture: washing agent ratio and a minimum of two washing cycles appeared to be the best settings of microalgal DW determination. The present treatment increased the AFDW/DW ratio of the four respective microalgae by a minimum of 19%. The findings of this study could serve as a pivotal reference in developing a standardized protocol of marine microalgal DW determination to obtain veracious and reliable marine microalgal DW.
