Parametric Study of Polymer-Nanoparticles-Assisted Injectivity Performance for Axisymmetric Two-Phase Flow in EOR Processes

ResNet and CWT Fusion: A New Paradigm for Optimized Heterogeneous Thin Reservoir Evaluation

The endeavor to explore and characterize oil and gas reservoirs presents significant challenges due to the inherent heterogeneities that are further compounded by the existence of thin sand layers encapsulated in shale strata. This complexity is intensified by limited and low-resolution seismic data, missing critical well-log information, and inaccessible angle stack data. Conventional reservoir classification approaches have struggled to address these issues, primarily due to their limitations in handling missing data effectively and, hence, precise estimations. This study focuses on the characterization of thin, heterogeneous potential sands of the B-interval within the Lower Goru Formation, a proven gas reservoir in the Badin area. The reservoir sands with varying thicknesses are assessed in detail for their optimized description and field productions by handling challenges, including low seismic resolutions, heterogeneities, and missing data sets. An innovative solution is developed based on the integration of continuous wavelet transform (CWT) and machine learning (ML) techniques for the approximation of missing data sets, i.e., S-wave (DTS), along with enhanced elastic and petrophysical properties. The improved properties are augmented by the high resolution attained by CWT and captured variability more profoundly through the implication of residual neural networks (ResNet). The limitations of conventional approaches are harnessed by ML solutions that operate with limited input data and deliver significantly improved results in characterizing enigmatic thin sand reservoirs. The high-frequency petroelastic properties reliably determined the thin heterogeneous potential sand bodies and illuminated a channelized play fairway that can be tested for additional wells with low-risk involvement.

Insight into Nano-chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery from Carbonate Reservoirs Using Environmentally Friendly Nanomaterials

The use of nanoparticles (NPs) in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes is very effective in reducing the interfacial tension (IFT) and surface tension (ST) and altering the wettability of reservoir rocks. The main purpose of this study was to use the newly synthesized nanocomposites (KCl/SiO₂/Xanthan NCs) in EOR applications. Several analytical techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were applied to confirm the validity of the synthesized NCs. From the synthesized NCs, nanofluids were prepared at different concentrations of 100-2000 ppm and characterized using electrical conductivity, IFT, and ST measurements. From the obtained results, it can be observed that 1000 ppm is the optimal concentration of the synthesized NCs that had the best performance in EOR applications. The nanofluid with 1000 ppm KCl/SiO₂/Xanthan NCs enabled reducing the IFT and ST from 33 and 70 to 29 and 40 mN/m, respectively. However, the contact angle was highly decreased under the influence of the same nanofluid to 41° and the oil recovery improved by an extra 17.05% OOIP. To sum up, KCl/SiO₂/Xanthan NCs proved highly effective in altering the wettability of rocks from oil-wet to water-wet and increasing the cumulative oil production.

Thermophysical Properties of Nanofluid in Two-Phase Fluid Flow through a Porous Rectangular Medium for Enhanced Oil Recovery

It is necessary to sustain energy from an external reservoir or employ advanced technologies to enhance oil recovery. A greater volume of oil may be recovered by employing nanofluid flooding. In this study, we investigated oil extraction in a two-phase incompressible fluid in a two-dimensional rectangular porous homogenous area filled with oil and having no capillary pressure. The governing equations that were derived from Darcy’s law and the mass conservation law were solved using the finite element method. Compared to earlier research, a more efficient numerical model is proposed here. The proposed model allows for the cost-effective study of heating-based inlet fluid in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and uses the empirical correlations of the nanofluid thermophysical properties on the relative permeability equations of the nanofluid and oil, so it is more accurate than other models to determine the higher recovery factor of one nanoparticle compared to other nanoparticles. Next, the effect of nanoparticle volume fraction on flooding was evaluated. EOR via nanofluid flooding processes and the effect of the intake temperatures (300 and 350 K) were also simulated by comparing three nanoparticles: SiO2, Al2O3, and CuO. The results show that adding nanoparticles (<5 v%) to a base fluid enhanced the oil recovery by more than 20%. Increasing the inlet temperature enhanced the oil recovery due to changes in viscosity and density of oil. Increasing the relative permeability of nanofluid while simultaneously reducing the relative permeability of oil due to the presence of nanoparticles was the primary reason for EOR.

Dual Transient Networks of Polymer and Micellar Chains: Structure and Viscoelastic Synergy

Dual transient networks were prepared by mixing highly charged long wormlike micelles of surfactants with polysaccharide chains of hydroxypropyl guar above the entanglement concentration for each of the components. The wormlike micelles were composed of two oppositely charged surfactants potassium oleate and n-octyltrimethylammonium bromide with a large excess of anionic surfactant. The system is macroscopically homogeneous over a wide range of polymer and surfactant concentrations, which is attributed to a stabilizing effect of surfactants counterions that try to occupy as much volume as possible in order to gain in translational entropy. At the same time, by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) combined with ultrasmall-angle neutron scattering (USANS), a microphase separation with the formation of polymer-rich and surfactant-rich domains was detected. Rheological studies in the linear viscoelastic regime revealed a synergistic 180-fold enhancement of viscosity and 65-fold increase of the longest relaxation time in comparison with the individual components. This effect was attributed to the local increase in concentration of both components trying to avoid contact with each other, which makes the micelles longer and increases the number of intermicellar and interpolymer entanglements. The enhanced rheological properties of this novel system based on industrially important polymer hold great potential for applications in personal care products, oil recovery and many other fields.

The sorption of Tebuconazole and Linuron from an Aqueous Environment with a Modified Sludge-Based Biochar: Effect, Mechanisms, and Its Persistent Free Radicals Study

In this study, the sludge-based biochar was prepared and utilized as an adsorbent for the removal of two commonly used pesticides in agriculture, namely tebuconazole (Teb) and linuron (Lin) in an aqueous solution. The main contributing factors such as biochar preparation conditions, persistent free radicals as well as contact time, agitation speed, biochar dose, temperature, and pH were investigated. The physicochemical properties were characterized by SEM + EDS, FTIR, BET, EPR, etc. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacities based on the Langmuir model was 7.8650 mg g−1 for tebuconazole and that based on Freundlich model was 9.0645 mg·g-1 for linuron at 25°C. The pseudo-second-order kinetic equations were all fitted well to the kinetic process of the adsorption of the two pesticides with all R2 ≥ 0.915. The maximum values of tebuconazole adsorption capacity occur at pH = 3. Meanwhile, linuron was not affected by pH. Both Cr6+ (r = −0.793∗∗/ −0.943∗∗) and humic acid (r = −0.798∗∗/ −0.947∗∗) significantly inhibited the adsorption amount of tebuconazole and linuron onto the biochar. Electron spin resonance signals (ESR) indicated that environmentally persistent radicals (EPFRs) are preferentially formed at lower pyrolysis temperatures and lower transition metal concentrations. The g-factors for BC400, BC600, BCF400, and BCF600 were 2.0036, 2.0035, 2.0034, and 2.0033, respectively, indicating that the EPFRs mainly have a carbon-centered structure with adjacent oxygen atoms. In addition, to close to the actual situation, natural water (from YanTai) was collected to simulate pesticide contamination. This study demonstrates that sludge-based biochar can achieve efficient removal of tebuconazole and linuron in aqueous environment in a short period of time with no secondary environmental risk especially on the waste activated sludge.

Computational fluid dynamic simulations to improve heat transfer in shell tube heat exchangers

Improving the thermal efficiency of shell-tube heat exchangers is essential in industries related to these heat exchangers. Installing heat transfer boosters on the side of the converter tube is one of the most appropriate ways to enhance heat transfer and increase the efficiency of this equipment. In this article, spring turbulence is studied using the computational fluid dynamics tool. The displacement heat transfer coefficient and the friction coefficient were selected as the primary target parameters, and the effect of using spring tabulators on them was investigated. The ratio of torsion step length to turbulence pipe length, wire diameter to pipe diameter ratio, and flow regime was studied as the main simulation variables, and the simulation results were compared with a simple pipe. The effect of water-acting fluid, R22, and copper Nanofluid on tubes containing turbidity was compared and investigated. This study showed that due to the pressure drop, the pipe with a torsional pitch to pipe length ratio of 0.17, a turbulent diameter to pipe diameter ratio of 0.15, and a Reynolds number of 50,000 with fluid R22 has the best performance for heat transfer.

Study on the Removal Efficiency and Mechanism of Tetracycline in Water Using Biochar and Magnetic Biochar

In this study, a new type of sludge-derived biochar material with high tetracycline removal efficiency, named magnetic Fe3O4 biochar, was accomplished by KOH activated and loaded with magnetic Fe3O4. The particles with spherical pellets observed by SEM, as well as the XRD patterns, indicated that magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles were successfully loaded onto the biochar. We studied the adsorption effects and mechanisms of the following three different adsorption materials for tetracycline: biochar (BC), magnetic Fe3O4, and magnetic biochar (MBC), and the loading conditions and reusability of the materials were also considered. The adsorption effects were as follows: Fe3O4 (94.3%) > MBC (88.3%) > BC (65.7%), and the ratio of biochar to ferric salt was 0.2:1; the removal effect reached the best result. Under an acidic condition, the adsorption capacity of all the materials reached the maximum, and the adsorption of tetracycline in water, by three adsorbents, involves chemical adsorption as the leading process and physical adsorption as the auxiliary process. Various characterizations indicated the removal of tetracycline, including pore filling, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bond action, and cationic-π action. Complex bridging is a unique adsorption mechanism of magnetic Fe3O4 and magnetic biochar. In addition, the magnetic biochar also possesses π–π bond interaction. The magnetic materials can still maintain a certain amount of adsorption capacity on tetracycline after five cycles. This study proved that the magnetic sludge-based biochar are ideal adsorbents for the removal of tetracycline from water, as well as an effective route for the reclamation of waste sludge.

Influence of Different Rotations of Organic Formamidinium Molecule on Electronic and Optical Properties of FAPbBr3 Perovskite

Hybrid organic–inorganic halide perovskites (HOIPs) have recently represented a material breakthrough for optoelectronic applications. Obviously, studying the interactions between the central organic cation and the Pb-X inorganic octahedral could provide a better understanding of HOIPs. In this work, we used a first-principles theoretical study to investigate the effect of different orientations of central formamidinium cation (FA+) on the electronic and optical properties of FAPbBr3 hybrid perovskite. In order to do this, the band structure (with and without spin–orbit coupling (SOC)), density of states (DOS), partial density of states (PDOS), electron density, distortion index, bond angle variance, dielectric function, and absorption spectra were computed. The findings revealed that a change in the orientation of FA+ caused some disorders in the distribution of interactions, resulting in the formation of some specific energy levels in the structure. The interactions between the inorganic and organic parts in different directions create a distortion index in the bonds of the inorganic octahedral, thus leading to a change in the volume of PbBr6. This is the main reason for the variations observed in the electronic and optical properties of FAPbBr3. The obtained results can be helpful in solar-cell applications.

A Laboratory Approach to Measure Enhanced Gas Recovery from a Tight Gas Reservoir during Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Injection

Supercritical carbon dioxide injection in tight reservoirs is an efficient and prominent enhanced gas recovery method, as it can be more mobilized in low-permeable reservoirs due to its molecular size. This paper aimed to perform a set of laboratory experiments to evaluate the impacts of permeability and water saturation on enhanced gas recovery, carbon dioxide storage capacity, and carbon dioxide content during supercritical carbon dioxide injection. It is observed that supercritical carbon dioxide provides a higher gas recovery increase after the gas depletion drive mechanism is carried out in low permeable core samples. This corresponds to the feasible mobilization of the supercritical carbon dioxide phase through smaller pores. The maximum gas recovery increase for core samples with 0.1 mD is about 22.5%, while gas recovery increase has lower values with the increase in permeability. It is about 19.8%, 15.3%, 12.1%, and 10.9% for core samples with 0.22, 0.36, 0.54, and 0.78 mD permeability, respectively. Moreover, higher water saturations would be a crucial factor in the gas recovery enhancement, especially in the final pore volume injection, as it can increase the supercritical carbon dioxide dissolving in water, leading to more displacement efficiency. The minimum carbon dioxide storage for 0.1 mD core samples is about 50%, while it is about 38% for tight core samples with the permeability of 0.78 mD. By decreasing water saturation from 0.65 to 0.15, less volume of supercritical carbon dioxide is involved in water, and therefore, carbon dioxide storage capacity increases. This is indicative of a proper gas displacement front in lower water saturation and higher gas recovery factor. The findings of this study can help for a better understanding of the gas production mechanism and crucial parameters that affect gas recovery from tight reservoirs.

Green Enhanced Oil Recovery for Carbonate Reservoirs

Green enhanced oil recovery (GEOR) is an eco-friendly EOR technique involving the injection of specific green fluids to improve macroscopic and microscopic sweep efficiencies, boosting residual oil production. The environmentally friendly surfactant-polymer (SP) flood is successfully tested in a sandstone reservoir. However, the applicability of the SP method does not extend to carbonate reservoirs yet and requires comprehensive investigation. This work aims to explore the oil recovery competency of a green SP formulation in carbonate through experimental and modelling studies. Numerous formulations of SP with ketone, alcohol, and organic acid are selected based on phase behavior and interfacial tension (IFT) reduction capabilities to examine their potential for enhancing residual oil production from carbonate cores. A blending of nonionic green surfactant alkyl polyglucoside (APG), xanthan gum (XG) biopolymer, and butanone recovered 22% tertiary oil from the carbonate core. This formulation recovered more than double residual crude than that of the APG, XG, and acetone. Similarly, a combination of APG, XG, acrylic acid, and butanol increased significantly more oil than the APG, XG, and acrylic acid formulation. The APG, XG, and butanone mixture is efficient with regards to boosting tertiary oil recovery from the carbonate core.

A New Hybrid Algorithm for Multi-Objective Reactive Power Planning via FACTS Devices and Renewable Wind Resources

The power system planning problem considering system loss function, voltage profile function, the cost function of FACTS (flexible alternating current transmission system) devices, and stability function are investigated in this paper. With the growth of electronic technologies, FACTS devices have improved stability and more reliable planning in reactive power (RP) planning. In addition, in modern power systems, renewable resources have an inevitable effect on power system planning. Therefore, wind resources make a complicated problem of planning due to conflicting functions and non-linear constraints. This confliction is the stochastic nature of the cost, loss, and voltage functions that cannot be summarized in function. A multi-objective hybrid algorithm is proposed to solve this problem by considering the linear and non-linear constraints that combine particle swarm optimization (PSO) and the virus colony search (VCS). VCS is a new optimization method based on viruses' search function to destroy host cells and cause the penetration of the best virus into a cell for reproduction. In the proposed model, the PSO is used to enhance local and global search. In addition, the non-dominated sort of the Pareto criterion is used to sort the data. The optimization results on different scenarios reveal that the combined method of the proposed hybrid algorithm can improve the parameters such as convergence time, index of voltage stability, and absolute magnitude of voltage deviation, and this method can reduce the total transmission line losses. In addition, the presence of wind resources has a positive effect on the mentioned issue.

Current Challenges and Advancements on the Management of Water Retreatment in Different Production Operations of Shale Reservoirs

Nowadays, water savings on industrial plants have become a significant concern for various plants and sections. It is vitally essential to propose applicable and efficient techniques to retreat produced water from onshore and offshore production units. This paper aimed to implement the PFF (Photo Fenton Flotation) method to optimize the water treatment procedure, as it is a two-stage separation technique. The measurements were recorded for the HF (hydraulic fracturing) and CEOR (chemically enhanced oil recovery) methods separately to compare the results appropriately. To assure the efficiency of this method, we first recorded the measurements for five sequential days. As a result, the total volume of 2372.5 MM m3/year of water can be saved in the HF process during the PFF treatment procedure, and only 20% of this required fresh water should be provided from other resources. On the other hand, the total volume of 7482.5 MM m3/year of water can be saved in CEOR processes during the PFF treatment procedure, and only 38% of this required fresh water should be provided from other resources. Therefore, the total water volume of 9855 MM m3 can be saved each year, indicating the efficiency of this method in supplying and saving the water volume during the production operations from oilfield units.

Techno-Economic Planning and Operation of the Microgrid Considering Real-Time Pricing Demand Response Program

The optimal planning of grid-connected microgrids (MGs) has been extensively studied in recent years. While most of the previous studies have used fixed or time-of-use (TOU) prices for the optimal sizing of MGs, this work introduces real-time pricing (RTP) for implementing a demand response (DR) program according to the national grid prices of Iran. In addition to the long-term planning of MG, the day-ahead operation of MG is also analyzed to get a better understanding of the DR program for daily electricity dispatch. For this purpose, four different days corresponding to the four seasons are selected for further analysis. In addition, various impacts of the proposed DR program on the MG planning results, including sizing and best configuration, net present cost (NPC) and cost of energy (COE), and emission generation by the utility grid, are investigated. The optimization results show that the implementation of the DR program has a positive impact on the technical, economic, and environmental aspects of MG. The NPC and COE are reduced by about USD 3700 and USD 0.0025/kWh, respectively. The component size is also reduced, resulting in a reduction in the initial cost. Carbon emissions are also reduced by 185 kg/year.

Hybrid Application of Nanoparticles and Polymer in Enhanced Oil Recovery Processes

Nowadays, the addition of nanoparticles to polymer solutions would be of interest; however, the feasible property of nanoparticles and their impact on oil recovery has not been investigated in more detail. This study investigates the rheology and capillary forces (interfacial tension and contact angle) of nanoparticles in the polymer performances during oil recovery processes. Thereby, a sequential injection of water, polymer, and nanoparticles; Nanosilica (SiO₂) and nano-aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃) was performed to measure the oil recovery factor. Retention decrease, capillary forces reduction, and polymer viscoelastic behavior increase have caused improved oil recovery due to the feasible mobility ratio of polymer-nanoparticle in fluid loss. The oil recovery factor for polymer flooding, polymer-Al₂O₃, and polymer-SiO₂ is 58%, 63%, and 67%, respectively. Thereby, polymer-SiO₂ flooding would provide better oil recovery than other scenarios that reduce the capillary force due to the structural disjoining pressure. According to the relative permeability curves, residual oil saturation (S_or) and water relative permeability (K_rw) are 29% and 0.3%, respectively, for polymer solution; however, for the polymer-nanoparticle solution, S_or and K_rw are 12% and 0.005%, respectively. Polymer treatment caused a dramatic decrease, rather than the water treatment effect on the contact angle. The minimum contact angle for water and polymer treatment are about 21 and 29, respectively. The contact angle decrease for polymer treatment in the presence of nanoparticles related to the surface hydrophilicity increase. Therefore, after 2000 mg L^-1 of SiO₂ concentration, there are no significant changes in contact angle.

Effects of Tube Radius and Surface Tension on Capillary Rise Dynamics of Water/Butanol Mixtures

Capillary-driven action is an important phenomenon which aids the development of high-performance heat transfer devices, such as microscale heat pipes. This study examines the capillary rise dynamics of n-butanol/water mixture in a single vertical capillary tube with different radii (0.4, 0.6, and 0.85 mm). For liquids, distilled water, n-butanol, and their blends with varying concentrations of butanol (0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 wt.%) were used. The results show that the height and velocity of the capillary rise were dependent on the tube radius and liquid surface tension. The larger the radius and the higher the surface tension, the lower was the equilibrium height (he) and the velocity of rise. The process of capillary rise was segregated into three characteristic regions: purely inertial, inertial + viscous, and purely viscous regions. The early stages (purely inertial and inertial + viscous) represented the characteristic heights h1 and h2, which were dominant in the capillary rise process. There were linear correlations between the characteristic heights (h1, h2, and he), tube radius, and surface tension. Based on these correlations, a linear function was established between each of the three characteristic heights and the consolidated value of tube radius and surface tension (σL/2πr2).

Modeling Transient Flows in Heterogeneous Layered Porous Media Using the Space–Time Trefftz Method

In this study, we developed a novel boundary-type meshless approach for dealing with two-dimensional transient flows in heterogeneous layered porous media. The novelty of the proposed method is that we derived the Trefftz space–time basis function for the two-dimensional diffusion equation in layered porous media in the space–time domain. The continuity conditions at the interface of the subdomains were satisfied in terms of the domain decomposition method. Numerical solutions were approximated based on the superposition principle utilizing the space–time basis functions of the governing equation. Using the space–time collocation scheme, the numerical solutions of the problem were solved with boundary and initial data assigned on the space–time boundaries, which combined spatial and temporal discretizations in the space–time manifold. Accordingly, the transient flows through the heterogeneous layered porous media in the space–time domain could be solved without using a time-marching scheme. Numerical examples and a convergence analysis were carried out to validate the accuracy and the stability of the method. The results illustrate that an excellent agreement with the analytical solution was obtained. Additionally, the proposed method was relatively simple because we only needed to deal with the boundary data, even for the problems in the heterogeneous layered porous media. Finally, when compared with the conventional time-marching scheme, highly accurate solutions were obtained and the error accumulation from the time-marching scheme was avoided.

Current Status and Potential of Tire Pyrolysis Oil Production as an Alternative Fuel in Developing Countries

Energy is essential for the nature of life and the development of countries. The main demand for the 21st century is to fulfill growing energy needs. Pakistan, through the use of fossil fuels, meets energy demands. There is pressure on the economy of the country due to the massive reliance on fossil fuels, and this tendency is influenced by various environmental impacts. To overcome the burden on fossil fuels, more attention has been drawn to provide fossil fuel substitution. Tire pyrolysis is among the effective substitutes of the fuel technology that generates useful products of liquid oil, char, and pyro gas. This research focuses on the environmental, social, and economic viability of tire pyrolysis oil in Pakistan. This study estimates the production and potential of tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) in Pakistan. Based on the calculations, the potential of tire pyrolysis oil production in Pakistan from 2015–2019 is 468,081 to 548,406 tons. The potential production of TPO in 2018–2019 was ~8.30% of the total import (6.6 million tons) of crude oil. Therefore, tire pyrolysis oil is considered an alternative fuel representing an economic and environmentally viability solution for Pakistan.

Biogenic Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Characterisation and Applications

Nanotechnology plays a big part in our modern daily lives, ranging from the biomedical sector to the energy sector. There are different physicochemical and biological methods to synthesise nanoparticles towards multiple applications. Biogenic production of nanoparticles through the utilisation of microorganisms provides great advantages over other techniques and is increasingly being explored. This review examines the process of the biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles mediated by microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and algae, and their applications. Microorganisms offer a disparate environment for nanoparticle synthesis. Optimum production and minimum time to obtain the desired size and shape, to improve the stability of nanoparticles and to optimise specific microorganisms for specific applications are the challenges to address, however. Numerous applications of biogenic nanoparticles in medicine, environment, drug delivery and biochemical sensors are discussed.

High Salinity and High Temperature Stable Colloidal Silica Nanoparticles with Wettability Alteration Ability for EOR Applications

The stability of nanoparticles at reservoir conditions is a key for a successful application of nanofluids for any oilfield operations, e.g., enhanced oil recovery (EOR). It has, however, remained a challenge to stabilize nanoparticles under high salinity and high temperature conditions for longer duration (at least months). In this work, we report surface modification of commercial silica nanoparticles by combination of zwitterionic and hydrophilic silanes to improve its stability under high salinity and high temperature conditions. To evaluate thermal stability, static and accelerated stability analyses methods were employed to predict the long-term thermal stability of the nanoparticles in pH range of 4–7. The contact angle measurements were performed on aged sandstone and carbonate rock surfaces to evaluate the ability of the nanoparticles to alter the wettability of the rock surfaces. The results of static stability analysis showed excellent thermal stability in 3.5% NaCl brine and synthetic seawater (SSW) at 60 °C for 1 month. The accelerated stability analysis predicted that the modified nanoparticles could remain stable for at least 6 months. The results of contact angle measurements on neutral-wet Berea, Bentheimer, and Austin Chalk showed that the modified nanoparticles were able to adsorb on these rock surfaces and altered wettability to water-wet. A larger change in contact angle for carbonate surface than in sandstone surface showed that these particles could be more effective in carbonate reservoirs or reservoirs with high carbonate content and help improve oil recovery.

Simulation-Based Optimization of Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery with a Model Integrating Temperature, Pressure, and Salinity Effects

The microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) method is an eco-friendly and economical alternative technology. The technology involves a variety of uncertainties, and its success depends on controlling microbial growth and metabolism. Though a few numerical studies have been carried out to reduce the uncertainties, no attempt has been made to consider temperature, pressure, and salinity in an integrated manner. In this study, a new modeling method incorporating these environmental impacts was proposed, and MEOR analysis was performed. As a result, accurate modeling was possible to prevent overestimating the performance of MEOR. In addition, oil recovery was maximized through sensitivity analysis and optimization based on an integrative model. Finally, applying MEOR to an actual reservoir model showed a 7% increase in oil recovery compared to waterflooding. This result proved the practical applicability of the method.

Energy, Exergy, Economic, and Exergoenvironmental Analyses of a Novel Hybrid System to Produce Electricity, Cooling, and Syngas

Efficient solar and wind energy to electricity conversion technologies are the best alternatives to reduce the use of fossil fuels and to evolve towards a green and decarbonized world. As the conventional photovoltaic systems use only the 600–1100 nm wavelength range of the solar radiation spectrum for electricity production, hybrid systems taking advantage of the overall solar radiation spectrum are gaining increasing interest. Moreover, such hybrid systems can produce, in an integrated and combined way, electricity, heating, cooling, and syngas through thermochemical processes. They have thus the huge potential for use in residential applications. The present work proposes a novel combined and integrated system for residential applications including wind turbines and a solar dish collector for renewables energy harvesting, an organic Rankine cycle for power production, an absorption chiller for cold production, and a methanation plant for CH4 production from captured CO2. This study deals with the energy, exergy, economic, and exergoenvironmental analyses of the proposed hybrid combined system, to assess its performance, viability, and environmental impact when operating in Tehran. Additionally, it gives a clear picture of how the production pattern of each useful product depends on the patterns of the collection of available renewable energies. Results show that the rate of methane production of this hybrid system changes from 42 up to 140 Nm3/month, due to CO2 consumption from 44 to 144 Nm3/month during a year. Moreover, the energy and exergy efficiencies of this hybrid system vary from 24.7% and 23% to 9.1% and 8%, respectively. The simple payback period of this hybrid system is 15.6 and the payback period of the system is 21.4 years.

Starting Conditions of Particle Migration in Tight Sandstone Reservoir Development

In the tight sandstone oil production stage, the migration of particles will not only block the oil path and throat, but also block the wellbore and damage the equipment. Based on the theory of non-Newtonian fluid, hydrodynamics, the extended Derjaguin Landau Verwey Overbeek (DLVO) theory and the JKR (the model of Johnson–Kendall–Roberts) contact theory, the mathematical model and quantitative analysis of the critical condition of the particle separation from the surface due to the influence of oil flow in the fracture environment are presented in this paper. A theoretical model with pressure gradient as the core parameter and particle size, crack size and various contact forces as variables is established. By adding the formula of non-Newtonian fluid and taking the consistency coefficient and fluidity index as the contrast relation, the change rule of particle migration under the influence of non-Newtonian fluid is obtained. Effective prevention and control measures for the purpose of effectively preventing particle migration are also put forward. The results show that with the increase in the fluidity index, the pressure gradient decreases obviously; with the increase in the consistency coefficient, the pressure gradient increases obviously; and with the increase in particle size, the pressure gradient first decreases and then increases, thus creating a U-shaped curve. The lowest pressure gradient exists under the fixed condition.
