Recent Advances in Synthesis and Applications of MFe2O4 (M = Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Zn) Nanoparticles

The excellent performance of oxygen evolution reaction on stainless steel electrodes by halogen oxyacid salts etching

Development of low-cost, efficient, and stable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the key issue for a large-scale hydrogen production. Recently, in-situ corrosion of stainless steel seems to be a feasible technique to obtain an efficient OER electrode, while a wide variety of corrosive agents often lead to significant difference in catalytic performance. Herein, we synthesized Ni-Fe based nanomaterials with OER activity through a facile one-step hydrothermal etching method of stainless steel mesh, and investigated the influence of three halogen oxyacid salts (KClO3, KBrO3, KIO3) on water oxidation performance. It was found that the reduction product of oxyacid salts has the pitting effect on the stainless steel, which plays an important role in regulating the morphology and composition of the nanomaterials. The KBrO3-derived electrode shows optimal OER performance, giving the small overpotential of 228 and 270 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm-2 respectively, a low Tafel slope of 36.2 mV dec-1, as well as durable stability in the long-time electrolysis. This work builds an internal relationship between the corrosive agents and the OER performance of the as-prepared electrodes, providing promising strategies and research foundations for further improving the OER performance and optimizing the structure of stainless steel electrodes.

Magnetic Nanoparticles: A Comprehensive Review from Synthesis to Biomedical Frontiers

Nanotechnology has opened new doors of exploration, particularly in materials science and healthcare. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNP), the tiny magnets, because of their various properties, have the potential to bring about radical changes in the field of medicine. The distinctive surface chemistry, nontoxicity, biocompatibility, and, in particular, the inducible magnetic moment of magnetic materials has attracted a great deal of interest in morphological structures from a variety of scientific domains. This review presents a concise overview of MNPs and their crucial properties and synthesis routes. It also aims to highlight the continuous synthesis methods available for MNP production. In recent years, the use of computational methods for understanding the behavior of nanoparticles has been on the rise. Thus, we also discuss the numerical models developed to understand how magnetic nanoparticles can be used in magnetic hyperthermia and targeting the Circle of Wilis. With the increasing use of MNPs in biomedical applications, it becomes necessary to understand the mechanisms of toxicity, which are elucidated in this review. The review focuses on the biomedical applications of MNPs in drug delivery, theranostics, and MRI contrasting agents. We anticipate that this article will broaden the perspective on magnetic nanoparticles and help to understand their functionality and applicability better.

Tuning metal atom doped interface of electrospinning nanowires to toward fast bioelectrocatalysis

Metal doping plays a key role in overcoming inefficient extracellular electron transfer between electrode interface and electricity-producing microorganisms. However, it is unknown whether different metals play distinctive roles in the doping process. Herein, three different metal ions (Fe, Ni and Cu) are added to the spinning precursor to obtain the corresponding electrospinning metal doped carbon nanofibers. It is found that the maximum output power of iron doped carbon nanofiber anode is 641.96 mW m-2, which is better than that of nickel doped carbon nanofiber (411.26 mW m-2) and copper doped carbon nanofiber (336.01 mW m-2), as well as 7.62 times higher than that of CNF. The results proved that due to the various number and types of active sites formed, as well as the distinction in surface morphology and structure, the electronegativity of each material is different. The different bio-abiotic interface could affect the direct contact between the anode interface and the extracellular protein of electricity producing microorganisms, which leading to a significant gap in the improvement of bioelectrocatalytic performance of different metal anode materials. This work provides a synthetic idea for designing highly efficient anode materials with directional metal modification and interface regulation.

Magnetic separation, sunlight-driven photocatalytic activity, and antibacterial studies of Sm-doped Co0.33Mg0.33Ni0.33Fe2O4 nanoparticles

Magnetic nanoparticles have emerged as a promising tool for wastewater treatment due to their unique properties. In this regard, Co0.33Mg0.33Ni0.33SmxFe2-xO4 (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.08) nanoparticles were prepared to examine their magnetic separation efficiency (MSE), photocatalytic, antibacterial, and antibiofilm performances. Pure nanoparticles, having the highest saturation magnetization (Ms = 31.87 emu/g), exhibit the highest MSE, where 95.6% of nanoparticles were separated after 20 min of applying a magnetic field of 150 mT. The catalytic performance of the prepared samples is examined by the photodegradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dye exposed to direct sunlight radiation. Improved photocatalytic activity is exhibited by Co0.33Mg0.33Ni0.33Sm0.04Fe1.96O4 nanoparticles, labeled as Sm0.04, where the rate of the degradation reaction is enhanced by 4.1 times compared to pure nanoparticles. Rising the pH and reaction temperature improves the rate of the photodegradation reaction of RhB. The incorporation of 15 wt% reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with Sm0.04 enhanced the rate of the reaction by 1.7 and 2.4 times compared with pure Sm0.04 sample and rGO, respectively. The antibacterial and antibiofilm activities against Escherichia coli, Leclercia adecarboxylata, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus faecium are assessed by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) broth microdilution, the agar well diffusion, the time-kill assays, the biofilm formation, and destruction assays. The bacteria used in these assessments are isolated from wastewater. The nanoparticles exhibit a bacteriostatic activity, with a better effect against the Gram-positive isolates. Co0.33Mg0.33Ni0.33SmxFe2O4 (x = 0.00) nanoparticles have the best effect. The effect is exerted after 2-3 h of incubation. Gram-positive biofilms are more sensitive to nanoparticles.

Enhanced ozonation of vanillin catalyzed by highly efficient magnetic MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 catalysts: Synergistic effects and mechanism insights

In this study, we synthesized magnetic MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 composite catalysts using a straightforward method, yielding catalysts that exhibited outstanding performance in catalyzing the ozonation of vanillin. This exceptional catalytic efficiency arose from the synergistic interplay between MnFe2O4 and ZIF-67. Comprehensive characterization via x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) confirmed that the incorporation of MnFe2O4 promoted the creation of oxygen vacancies, resulting in an increased presence of l adsorbed oxygen (Oads) and the generation of additional ·OH groups on the catalyst surface. Utilizing ZIF-67 as the carrier markedly enhanced the specific surface area of the catalyst, augmenting the exposure of active sites, thus improving the degradation efficiency and reducing the energy consumption. The effects of different experimental parameters (catalyst type, initial vanillin concentration, ozone dosage, initial pH value, and catalyst dosage) were also investigated, and the optimal experimental parameters (300 mg/L1.0-MnFe2O4/ZIF-67, vanillin concentration = 250 mg/L, O3 concentration = 12 mg/min, pH = 7) were obtained. The vanillin removal efficiency of MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 was increased from 74.95% to 99.54% after 30 min of reaction, and the magnetic separation of MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 was easy to be recycled and stable, and the vanillin removal efficiency of MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 was only decreased by about 8.92% after 5 cycles. Additionally, we delved into the synergistic effects and catalytic mechanism of the catalysts through kinetic fitting, reactive oxygen quenching experiments, and electron transfer analysis. This multifaceted approach provides a comprehensive understanding of the enhanced ozonation process catalyzed by MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 composite catalysts, shedding light on their potential applications in advanced oxidation processes. PRACTITIONER POINTS: A stable and recyclable magnetic composite MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 catalyst was synthesized through a simple method. The synergistic effect and catalytic mechanism of the MnFe2O4/ZIF-67 catalyst were comprehensively analyzed and discussed. A kinetic model for the catalytic ozone oxidation of vanillin was introduced, providing valuable insights into the reaction dynamics.

Electrospun Cu-Co ferrite nanofibers: synthesis, structure, optical and magnetic properties, and anti-cancer activity

In this study, we investigated Cu-Co ferrite nanofibers (NFs) that were synthesized for the first time employing the electrospinning technique. The structure, phase purity and crystallite size of all the prepared NFs were revealed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis. The NFs crystallized in the Fd3̄m (no. 227) space group and the cation distribution arrangement over distinct sites in their structure was analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) together with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy analysis showed the microstructure of the NFs and verified their expected chemical compositions. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images confirmed the fibrous nature and the construction of the NFs. The band gap energies derived from the UV-vis reflectance spectra showed a blue shift with an increase in the amount of Cu in the sample from 1.42 eV to 1.86 eV. Magnetization (M) as a function of magnetic field (H) measurements performed at ambient and low temperatures showed the ferrimagnetic behavior of all the NFs. The magnetic parameters including coercivity (Hc), saturation magnetization (Ms), remanent magnetization (Mr), and squareness ratio were determined from the recorded magnetization curves. At 300 K, Ms was reduced from 78.8 to 42.4 emu g-1, Mr reduced from 22.8 to 7.6 emu g-1 and the Bohr magneton reduced from 3.3 to 1.8μB with an increase in the content of Cu in the samples. The same trend was observed at 10 K, where Ms was reduced from 93.7 to 50.9 emu g-1, Mr reduced from 60.9 to 35.9 emu g-1 and the Bohr magneton reduced from 3.94 to 2.16μB. Alternatively, Hc has the highest values for x = 0 (850 Oe at 300 K and 5220 Oe at 10 K) and x = 0.6 (800 Oe at 300 K and 5400 Oe at 10 K). The anti-cancer activity of the NFs was evaluated using the MTT cell viability assay, showing a reduction in the viability of both HCT-116 and HeLa cancer cells compared to non-cancerous HEK-293 cells after treatment with the NFs. Apoptotic activity was examined by DAPI staining, where treatment with the NFs induced chromatin condensation and nuclear disintegration in HCT-116 cells.

Large-Scale Synthesis of High Energy Thermal Battery Cathode Ni0.5Co0.5S2 by a Simple Sintering Technique

With the synergies of multiple elements, bimetallic sulfides exhibit excellent performance as splendid electrode materials and effective catalysts. However, large-scale synthesis of high-performance single-phase multicomponent sulfides has always been a challenge. Based on thermodynamic calculations, the intermediate phases NiS2 and Co3S4 are devoted to the synthesis of single-phase Ni0.5Co0.5S2. Because the reaction from NiS2 and Co3S4 to Ni0.5Co0.5S2 goes through a lower energy, it thermodynamically contributes to achieving a single-phase structure. Thus, single-phase Ni0.5Co0.5S2 can be simply and quickly prepared by two-step sintering and successfully scalable for mass production. This technique can extend to the whole ingredients Ni1-xCoxS2. Ni0.5Co0.5S2 demonstrates excellent thermal stability and good conductivity. It delivers a specific capacity of 671 mAh·g-1 and a specific energy of 1173 Wh·kg-1 when applied to a thermal battery cathode, which are increased by 18.6% and 25.0%, respectively, compared to pristine NiS2 (566 mAh·g-1) and CoS2 (537 mAh·g-1). This work proposes an innovative sintering method, which is applicable for cost-efficient and large-scale synthesis of single-phase multicomponent sulfides.

Tuning the Magnetic Behavior of Zinc Ferrite via Cobalt Substitution: A Structural Analysis

Cobalt-doped zinc ferrite is a contemporary material with significant structural and magnetic characteristics. Our study explores the magnetic properties of cobalt-substituted zinc ferrite (ZnxCo1-xFe2O4), synthesized via a simple sol-gel method. By varying the cobalt ratio from 0 to 0.5, we found that zinc substitution impacts both the magnetization and lattice parameters. FTIR analysis suggested the presence of functional groups, particularly depicting an M-O stretching band, within octahedral and tetrahedral clusters. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the phase purity and cubic structure. The synthesized materials exhibited an average particle size of 24-75 nm. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the morphological properties, confirming the formation of truncated octahedral particles. In order to determine the stability, mass loss (%), and thermal behavior, a thermal analysis (thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)/differential thermal analysis (DTA)) was performed. The magnetic properties of the synthesized ferrites were confirmed via a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Finally, the highest saturated magnetization and lowest coercivity values were observed with higher concentrations of the cobalt dopant substituting zinc. The synthesized nanomaterials have good stability as compared to other such materials and can be used for magnetization in the near future.

Synthesis of novel metal silica nanoparticles exhibiting antimicrobial potential and applications to combat periodontitis

Periodontitis is a severe form of gum disease caused by bacterial plaque that affects millions of people and has substantial worldwide health and economic implications. However, current clinical antiseptic and antimicrobial drug therapies are insufficient because they frequently have numerous side effects and contribute to widespread bacterial resistance. Recently, nanotechnology has shown promise in the synthesis of novel periodontal therapeutic materials. Nanoparticles are quickly replacing antibiotics in the treatment of bacterial infections, and their potential application in dentistry is immense. The alarming increases in antimicrobial resistance further emphasize the importance of exploring and utilizing nanotechnology in the fight against tooth diseases particularly periodontitis. We developed 16 different combinations of mesoporous silica nanomaterials in this study by ageing, drying, and calcining them with 11 different metals including silver, zinc, copper, gold, palladium, ruthenium, platinum, nickel, cerium, aluminium, and zirconium. The antibacterial properties of metal-doped silica were evaluated using four distinct susceptibility tests. The agar well diffusion antibacterial activity test, which measured the susceptibility of the microbes being tested, as well as the antibacterial efficacy of mesoporous silica with different silica/metal ratios, were among these studies. The growth kinetics experiment was used to investigate the efficacy of various metal-doped silica nanoparticles on microbial growth. To detect growth inhibitory effects, the colony-forming unit assay was used. Finally, MIC and MBC tests were performed to observe the inhibition of microbial biofilm formation. Our findings show that silver- and zinc-doped silica nanoparticles synthesized using the sol-gel method can be effective antimicrobial agents against periodontitis-causing microbes. This study represents the pioneering work reporting the antimicrobial properties of metal-loaded TUD-1 mesoporous silica, which could be useful in the fight against other infectious diseases too.

The Promise of Metal-Doped Iron Oxide Nanoparticles as Antimicrobial Agent

Antibiotic resistance (AMR) is one of the pressing global public health concerns and projections indicate a potential 10 million fatalities by the year 2050. The decreasing effectiveness of commercially available antibiotics due to the drug resistance phenomenon has spurred research efforts to develop potent and safe antimicrobial agents. Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs), especially when doped with metals, have emerged as a promising avenue for combating microbial infections. Like IONPs, the antimicrobial activities of doped-IONPs are also linked to their surface charge, size, and shape. Doping metals on nanoparticles can alter the size and magnetic properties by reducing the energy band gap and combining electronic charges with spins. Furthermore, smaller metal-doped nanoparticles tend to exhibit enhanced antimicrobial activity due to their higher surface-to-volume ratio, facilitating greater interaction with bacterial cells. Moreover, metal doping can also lead to increased charge density in magnetic nanoparticles and thereby elevate reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. These ROS play a vital role to disrupt bacterial cell membrane, proteins, or nucleic acids. In this review, we compared the antimicrobial activities of different doped-IONPs, elucidated their mechanism(s), and put forth opinions for improved biocompatibility.

Synthesis of Pectin and Eggshell Biowaste-Mediated Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp), Their Physicochemical Characterizations, and Use as Antibacterial Material

The current study reports the synthesis of sustainable nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp) using a wet chemical precipitation approach. The materials used in the green synthesis of nHAp were obtained from environmental biowastes such as HAp from eggshells and pectin from banana peels. The physicochemical characterization of obtained nHAp was carried out using different techniques. For instance, X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and FTIR spectroscopy were used to study the crystallinity and synthesis of nHAp respectively. In addition, the morphology and elemental composition of nHAP were studied using FESEM equipped with EDX. HRTEM showed the internal structure of nHAP and calculated its grain size which was 64 nm. Furthermore, the prepared nHAp was explored for its antibacterial and antibiofilm activity which has received less attention previously. The obtained results showed the potential of pectin-bound nHAp as an antibacterial agent for various biomedical and healthcare applications.

High-Temperature, Lightweight Ceramics with Nano-Sized Ferrites for EMI Shielding: Synthesis, Characterisation, and Potential Applications

The present study focuses on the synthesis and characterisation of a lightweight ceramic material with electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties, achieved using mullite containing micrometre-sized hollow spheres (cenospheres) and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles. This research explores compositions with varying CoFe2O4 contents ranging from 0 up to 20 wt.%. Conventional sintering in an air atmosphere is carried out at a temperature between 1100 and 1300 °C. The addition of ferrite nanoparticles was found to enhance the process of sintering cenospheres, resulting in improved material density and mechanical properties. Furthermore, this study reveals a direct correlation between the concentration of ferrite nanoparticles and the electromagnetic properties of the material. By increasing the concentration of ferrite nanoparticles, the electromagnetic shielding effect of the material (saturation magnetisation (Ms) and remanent magnetisation (Mr)) was observed to strengthen. These findings provide valuable insights into designing and developing lightweight ceramic materials with enhanced electromagnetic shielding capabilities. The synthesized ceramic material holds promise for various applications that require effective electromagnetic shielding, such as in the electronics, telecommunications, and aerospace industries.

Effect of Organic Coating Variation on the Electric and Magnetic Behavior of Ferrite Nanoparticles

Organic ligand coatings can modify the surface properties of nanoparticles. With the proper choice of the type of nanoparticles and of the ligand, a targeted modification can be achieved that is suitable for specific applications. In the present work, we employ density functional theory calculations with Hubbard corrections (DFT + U) to treat localized states in order to investigate the magnetic and electrostatic properties of ferrite nanoparticles (CoFe2O4 and Fe2O3) covered with COOH-terminated [oleic acid (OA)] and OH-terminated [diethylene glycol (DEG)] ligands by varying the ligands coverage. OA results in a decrease of the mean magnetic moment for both particles as the coating coverage increases. The magnetic anisotropy (MAE) significantly decreases for CoFe2O4, whereas for Fe2O3 a significant increase of MAE is found as the OA coverage percentage increases. For DEG, the variation of both types of nanoparticles in the magnetic moment and the magnetic anisotropy is not significant since DEG shows a weaker attachment on the surface. As COOH shows a larger percentage of covalent bonding than OH, a larger amount of charge is transferred to both particles when OA is attached on their surface. In this case, the particles possess a higher charge, and thus they can produce a larger electrostatic potential in the neighborhood independently of the screening by the coating. Thus, the repulsive Coulombic forces are enhanced mainly in the OA coating case, resulting in an enhancement of their colloidal stability.

Chiral mesostructured NiFe2O4 films with chirality induced spin selectivity

Chiral mesostructured NiFe2O4 films (CMNFFs) were synthesized using L-/D-tyrosine as symmetry-breaking and structure-directing agents through a hydrothermal method. For the first time, chirality induced spin selectivity was directly observed in these ferrimagnetic materials using chirality-dependent magnetic-tip conducting atomic force microscopy (mc-AFM).

An advanced photo-oxidation process for pharmaceuticals using plasmon-assisted Ag-CoFe2O4 photocatalysts

The discharge of amoxicillin (AMX) from pharmaceutical intermediates has adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems. The elimination of AMX requires advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) that utilize high-performance photocatalysts. Furthermore, the design of highly visible light photocatalysts for AOPs demands both cost-effectiveness and efficiency. In this work, a plasmon-assisted visible light photocatalyst of 2D Ag-CoFe2O4 nanohybrids was successfully synthesized and characterized with several analytical tools to degrade AMX in aqueous solutions through advanced AOPs. The results showed that the Ag-CoFe2O4 nanohybrids had excellent photocatalytic activity and stability, which could efficiently reduce the AMX concentration by 99% within 70 min under visible light irradiation. In particular, CoFe2O4 and Ag have an interfacial contact that prevents electron-hole pair recombination more effectively than pure CoFe2O4, which results in electrons in its conduction band (CB) migrating to metallic Ag sites. Thus, charge transfers between the two materials are more efficient, leading to higher photocatalytic oxidation of AMX. Furthermore, the surface plasmon of Ag nanoparticles are excited by their plasmonic resonance, which increases the absorption of visible light. The plasmon-assisted visible light photocatalyst could replace expensive and energy-intensive advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). AOPs pathways associated with AMX have been discussed in detail. The HPLC chromatogram clearly showed AMX was oxidized by four-membered B-lactam ring opening and hydroxylation with •OH. 2D Ag-CoFe2O4 heterostructure was found to be efficient, selective, and cost-effective for the degradation of several pharmaceutical compounds. Additionally, it was found to be eco-friendly and sustainable, making it a viable alternative to AOPs.

Nanocomposites Based on Polyethylene and Nickel Ferrite: Preparation, Characterization, and Properties

Composite materials based on NiFe2O4 nanoparticles and polyethylene matrix have been synthesized by thermal decomposition to expand the application area of high-pressure polyethylene by filling it with nanoscale particles. The synthesized compositions were obtained in the form of a dark gray powder and compressed for further study According to TEM, the average particle size in composites was 2, 3, and 4 nm in samples with a filling of 10%, 20% and 30%. The concentration dependences of the specific electrical resistivity ρV, dielectric permittivity ε, saturation magnetization MS and the parameters of reflection and attenuation of microwave power of the obtained composites were investigated. The threshold for percolation in such materials is found to be within a concentration range of 20…30%. The electronic and atomic structure of composites was studied by methods of Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The closest atomic environment of nickel and iron in nanoparticles is close to that of crystalline NiFe2O4. The dependence of the nanoparticles size as well as the dependence of the number of tetrahedral or octahedral iron positions in nickel ferrite nanoparticles to their content in polyethylene matrix is established. It is shown that composite materials based on NiFe2O4 nanoparticles and polyethylene matrix can be used as components of electromagnetic compatibility systems.

Development of Iron-Silicate Composites by Waste Glass and Iron or Steel Powders

There is growing interest in the opportunities regarding construction and demolition wastes, such as glass and metal powders, for developing a circular economy and their transformation into new materials. This management and recycling of construction and demolition waste offers environmental benefits and conservation of natural resources. In this paper, new magnetic composite materials were prepared by wet chemical synthesis methods using crushed glasses and iron and steel waste powders as raw materials. The prepared iron-silicate composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, infrared (IR), ultraviolet-visible, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. The XRD data confirm the formation of varied crystalline phases of the iron ions. The presence of the Fe3O4 crystalline phase was detected in the composites containing the iron waste powders. The inspection of the SEM micrographs revealed slightly better homogeneity for the composite material containing larger amounts of iron waste and heterogeneous morphology with cracks and random crystallinity for the composite doped with steel waste. By doping with different contents of iron or steel waste powder, structural modifications in the silicate network and the formation of new bands in the IR spectra were evidenced. The UV-Vis spectra were characterized by the absorption peaks for both the tetrahedral and octahedral geometries of the Fe3+ ions and the octahedral coordination of the Fe2+ ions with oxygen anions. The EPR data show resonance lines with g ~2, 4.3, and 6.4, corresponding to the Fe3+ ions. Using hysteresis curves, the superparamagnetic properties of the iron-silicate composites were evidenced.

Screening of Mono-, Di- and Trivalent Cationic Dopants for the Enhancement of Thermal Behavior, Kinetics, Structural, Morphological, Surface and Magnetic Properties of CoFe2O4-SiO2 Nanocomposites

CoFe₂O₄ is a promising functional material for various applications. The impact of doping with different cations (Ag⁺, Na⁺, Ca²⁺, Cd²⁺, and La³⁺) on the structural, thermal, kinetics, morphological, surface, and magnetic properties of CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles synthesized via the sol-gel method and calcined at 400, 700 and 1000 °C is investigated. The thermal behavior of reactants during the synthesis process reveals the formation of metallic succinates up to 200 °C and their decomposition into metal oxides that further react and form the ferrites. The rate constant of succinates' decomposition into ferrites calculated using the isotherms at 150, 200, 250, and 300 °C decrease with increasing temperature and depend on the doping cation. By calcination at low temperatures, single-phase ferrites with low crystallinity were observed, while at 1000 °C, the well-crystallized ferrites were accompanied by crystalline phases of the silica matrix (cristobalite and quartz). The atomic force microscopy images reveal spherical ferrite particles covered by an amorphous phase, the particle size, powder surface area, and coating thickness contingent on the doping ion and calcination temperature. The structural parameters estimated via X-ray diffraction (crystallite size, relative crystallinity, lattice parameter, unit cell volume, hopping length, density) and the magnetic parameters (saturation magnetization, remanent magnetization, magnetic moment per formula unit, coercivity, and anisotropy constant) depend on the doping ion and calcination temperature.

Review on magnetic spinel ferrite (MFe2O4) nanoparticles: From synthesis to application

Magnetic spinel ferrite materials offer various applications in biomedical, water treatment, and industrial electronic devices, which has sparked a lot of attention. This review focuses on the synthesis, characterization, and applications of spinel ferrites in a variety of fields, particularly spinel ferrites with doping. Spinel ferrites nanoparticles doped with the elements have remarkable electrical and magnetic properties, allowing them to be used in a wide range of applications such as magnetic fields, microwave absorbers, and biomedicine. Furthermore, the physical properties of spinel ferrites can be modified by substituting metallic atoms, resulting in improved performance. The most recent and noteworthy applications of magnetic ferrite nanoparticles are reviewed and discussed in this review. This review goes over the synthesis, doping and applications of different types of metal ferrite nanoparticles, as well as views on how to choose the appropriate magnetic ferrites based on the intended application.

Enhanced photocatalytic performance of CdFe2O4/Al2O3 nanocomposite for dye degradation

In the present work, CdFe₂O₄/Al₂O₃ magnetic nanocomposite photocatalyst is successfully synthesized by simple sol-gel auto-combustion method. The role of this sample is studied as a photocatalyst. The influence of Al₂O₃ concentration with CdFe₂O₄ on the photocatalytic property is also studied. We have considered three weight percentage of Al₂O₃, 5%, 10%, and 20% with CdFe₂O₄. All the samples are characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with selected area electron diffraction (SAED), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), UV-Visible, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy techniques. The 10% composite sample showed the lower particle size, higher surface area, enhanced porosity, higher saturation magnetization, and considerable band gap as compared to that of 5% and 20% CdFe₂O₄/Al₂O₃ as well as bare CdFe₂O₄ nanoparticles. The photocatalytic activity of the sample is evaluated towards the degradation of the xylenol orange (XO) dye under UV light. The degradation process of the dye is monitored spectrophotometrically. The performance in terms of removal efficiency is studied by varying the contact time, dye concentration and amount of catalyst. Among the three concentrations of Al₂O₃, the 10% weight concentration of Al₂O₃ with CdFe₂O₄ is found to be the optimal concentration and showed the higher degradation rate. After 30 min photocatalytic reaction, the degradation rate is 92.29% for 10% CdFe₂O₄/Al₂O₃ and for bare CdFe₂O₄, it is 85.79%. This work provides a new reference for designing Al₂O₃-based spinel ferrite nanocomposites and their role in wastewater management.

Husk-like Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Induce Apoptosis through ROS Generation in Epidermoid Carcinoma Cells: Effect of Incubation Period on Sol-Gel Synthesis and Anti-Cancerous Properties

This study effectively reports the influence of experimental incubation period on the sol-gel production of husk-like zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZNPs) and their anti-cancerous abilities. The surface morphology of ZNPs was studied with the help of SEM. With the use of TEM, the diameter range of the ZNPs was estimated to be ~86 and ~231 nm for ZNP^A and ZNP^B, prepared by incubating zinc oxide for 2 and 10 weeks, respectively. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigation showed that ZNPs had a pure wurtzite crystal structure. On prolonging the experimental incubation, a relative drop in aspect ratio was observed, displaying a distinct blue-shift in the UV-visible spectrum. Furthermore, RBC lysis assay results concluded that ZNP^A and ZNP^B both demonstrated innoxious nature. As indicated by MTT assay, reactive oxygen species (ROS) release, and chromatin condensation investigations against the human epidermoid carcinoma (HEC) A431 cells, ZNP^B demonstrated viable relevance to chemotherapy. Compared to ZNP^B, ZNP^A had a slightly lower IC₅₀ against A431 cells due to its small size. This study conclusively describes a simple, affordable method to produce ZNP nano-formulations that display significant cytotoxicity against the skin cancer cell line A431, suggesting that ZNPs may be useful in the treatment of cancer.

Functional Micro-/Nanostructures in Agrofood Science: Precise Inspection, Hazard Elimination, and Potential Health Risks

Nanotechnology, biotechniques, and chemical engineering have arisen as new trends with significant impacts on agrofood science development. Advanced analytical techniques with high sensitivity, specificity, and automation based on micro-/nanomaterials for food hazard elimination have become leading research hotspots in agrofood science. Research progress in micro-/nanomaterials has provided a solid theoretical basis and technical support to solve problems in the industry. However, the rapid development of micro-/nanostructures has also raised concerns regarding potential risks to human health. This review presents the latest advances in the precise inspection and elimination of food hazards from micro-/nanomaterials and discusses the potential threats to human health posed by nanomaterials. The theoretical reference was provided for the application trend of micro-/nanomaterials in the field of agrofood science in the future.

Recent Advances in the Development of Novel Iron–Copper Bimetallic Photo Fenton Catalysts

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been postulated as viable, innovative, and efficient technologies for the removal of pollutants from water bodies. Among AOPs, photo-Fenton processes have been shown to be effective for the degradation of various types of organic compounds in industrial wastewater. Monometallic iron catalysts are limited in practical applications due to their low catalytic activity, poor stability, and recyclability. On the other hand, the development of catalysts based on copper oxides has become a current research topic due to their advantages such as strong light absorption, high mobility of charge carriers, low environmental toxicity, long-term stability, and low production cost. For these reasons, great efforts have been made to improve the practical applications of heterogeneous catalysts, and the bimetallic iron–copper materials have become a focus of research. In this context, this review focuses on the compilation of the most relevant studies on the recent progress in the application of bimetallic iron–copper materials in heterogeneous photo–Fenton-like reactions for the degradation of pollutants in wastewater. Special attention is paid to the removal efficiencies obtained and the reaction mechanisms involved in the photo–Fenton treatments with the different catalysts.

The Influence of Zn Substitution on Physical Properties of CoFe2O4 Nanoparticles

Co1−xZnxFe2O4 nanoparticles (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) have been synthesized via a green sol−gel combustion method. The prepared samples were studied using X-ray diffraction measurements (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman, and magnetic measurements. All samples were found to be single phases and have a cubic Fd-3m structure. EDS analysis confirmed the presence of cobalt, zinc, iron, and oxygen in all studied samples. Raman spectra clearly show that Zn ions are preferentially located in T sites for low Zn concentrations. Due to their high crystallinity, the nanoparticles show high values of the magnetization, which increases with the Zn content for x < 0.5. The magnetic properties are discussed based on Raman results. Co ferrite doped with 30% of Zn produced the largest SAR values, which increase linearly from 148 to 840 W/gMNPs as the H is increased from 20 to 60 kA/m.

Fabrication and Characterization of W-Substituted ZnFe2O4 for Gas Sensing Applications

A sol–gel technique was successfully employed in creating pure and W-substituted zinc ferrite, with nominal compositions of ZnFe2−2xWxO4 (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.15). For the purposes of investigating the physical and chemical properties of the generated powders, several analytical techniques were used. In TEM images of all the compositions, mixed-shaped particles (cubic, spherical, and hexagonal) were observed. The crystallite size decreases from 82 nm (x = 0.0) to 32 nm (x = 0.15) with an increase in the W doping contents in the ZnFe2O4 lattice. The microstrain increases with increasing W doping content. Furthermore, the surface area of pure ZnFe2O4, 0.05 W-ZnFe2O4, 0.10 W-ZnFe2O4, and 0.15 W-ZnFe2O4 NPs were calculated as being 121.5, 129.1, 134.4 and 143.2 m2 g−1, respectively, with a mesoporous pore structure for all ferrite samples. The calculated BJH pore size distribution was within the range of 160 to 205 Å. All W-doped ZnFe2O4 samples show H-M loops with paramagnetic characteristics. The magnetization (M) directly increases by increasing the applied field (H) without achieving saturation up to 20 kA/m. For comparison, the magnetization at 20 kA/m gradually decreases with increasing W doping content. Among all the synthesized samples, the 0.15 W-ZnFe2O4 NPs demonstrated the highest sensitivity towards acetone gas at 350 °C.

Simulation of the Nucleation and Crystal Growth Process in the Laser-Induced Deposition in Solution by a Lattice Boltzmann Method

A Lattice Boltzmann model is proposed, combining the theories of nucleation and crystal growth for the study of the laser-induced deposition in solution (LIDS). The conjugate heat transfer and the natural convection of the liquid precursor were simulated with the evolving interface of crystal growth. In turn, the morphology of the deposited materials was affected by multiple process parameters, including conditions of chemical precursor and the laser-induced heat and mass transfer. Simulation results indicated that the morphology of deposited materials was mostly affected by the initial concentration of the precursor solution. Specifically, the nonuniformity of thin films was caused by the convection induced by the pulsed-laser, and the surface roughness was due to the competition of local structures for the precursor supply. A relationship of process-condition-material was established, providing guidance of choosing various parameters in LIDS for a desirable morphology of deposited material, facilitating the capabilities of pulsed lasers in precise control in nanomanufacturing.

Evaluation of Green-Synthesized Cuprospinel Nanoparticles as a Nanosensor for Detection of Low-Concentration Cd(II) Ion in the Aqueous Solutions by the Quartz Crystal Microbalance Method

Cd(II) heavy metal is an extremely dangerous hazardous material for both humans and the environment. Its high toxicity is the reason behind the examination of new techniques for detecting very small concentrations of Cd(II). Recently, Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) has been one of the techniques that have been widely used to detect trace heavy metal ions in solutions. It is a simple, inexpensive, portable, and sensitive gravimetric sensor due to its quality sensitivity lowest to nanograms. In this work, Cuprospinel nanoparticles were synthesized through the green synthesis approach using Psidium guajava L. leaf extract as a reducing agent, which is the first scientific description to report the preparation of these nanoparticles by this method. Subsequently, the synthesized nanoparticles were subjected to the characterization of their crystallinity, structure, and morphology by the XRD, N₂ adsorption-desorption, zeta potential, DLS, AFM, SEM, and TEM analyzers. The prepared Cuprospinel nanoparticles were evaluated as a nanosensor for the detection of the very low concentration of Cd(II) ions in aqueous solutions using the QCM technique. The results of the characterization proved that the Cuprospinel nanoparticles have formed in the nanoscale with sub-spherical shapes and particles size ranging from 20 to 80 nm. The BET surface area and pore size analysis revealed that the synthesized Cuprospinel nanoparticles possess a surface area of 47.3 m²/g, an average pore size of 1.5 nm, and a micropore volume of 0.064 cc/g. The QCM results demonstrated the success of the Cuprospinel nanoparticles sensor in detecting the tiny amounts of Cd(II) ions in the aqueous solutions with concentrations reaching about 3.6 ng/L.

Efficient Green Synthesis of (Fe3O4) and (NiFe2O4) Nanoparticles Using Star Anise (Illicium verum) Extract and Their Biomedical Activity against Some Cancer Cells

Magnetite Fe3O4 and spinel (2:1) and (4:1) NiFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were prepared by simple and affordable co-precipitation methods using an extract of star anise (Illicium verum) as a green reducing agent. The morphology and chemical composition of these MNPs were confirmed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The synthesized magnetite Fe3O4 and spinel (2:1) and (4:1) NiFe2O4 MNPs were in the size range of 0.1-1 µm. The MNPs had irregular clustered platelets (magnetite Fe3O4) and pyramidal structures (spinel (2:1) and (4:1) NiFe2O4 NPs). The average sizes of the synthesized magnetite Fe3O4, and spinel (2:1) and (4:1) NiFe2O4 MNPs calculated using XRD analysis were 66.8, 72.5, and 72.9 nm, respectively. In addition to the characteristic absorption peaks of magnetite Fe3O4, those of spinel (2:1) and (4:1) NiFe2O4 MNPs were detected at ~300-350 nm and ~700 nm, respectively. Overall, the results of this study indicate that the synthesized magnetite Fe3O4, and spinel (2:1) and (4:1) NiFe2O4 MNPs showed high biomedical activities against liver carcinoma cells and non-small lung adenocarcinoma cells.

Hollow Nanospheres Organized by Ultra-Small CuFe2O4/C Subunits with Efficient Photo-Fenton-like Performance for Antibiotic Degradation and Cr(VI) Reduction

Hollow transition metal oxides have important applications in the degradation of organic pollutants by a photo-Fenton-like process. Herein, uniform, highly dispersible hollow CuFe2O4/C nanospheres (denoted as CFO/C-PNSs) were prepared by a one-pot approach. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images verified that the CFO/C-PNS catalyst mainly presents hollow nanosphere morphology with a diameter of 250 ± 30 nm. Surprisingly, the photodegradation test results revealed that CFO/C-PNSs had an excellent photocatalytic performance in the elimination of various organic contaminants under visible light through the efficient Fenton catalytic process. Due to the unique hollow structure formed by the assembly of ultra-small CFO/C subunits, the catalyst exposes more reaction sites, improving its photocatalytic activity. More importantly, the resulting magnetically separable CFO/C-PNSs exhibited excellent stability. Finally, the possible photocatalytic reaction mechanism of the CFO/C-PNSs was proposed, which enables us to have a clearer understanding of the photo-Fenton mechanism. Through a series of characterization and analysis of degradation behavior of CFO/C-PNS samples over antibiotic degradation and Cr(VI) reduction, •OH radicals generated from H2O2 decomposition played an essential role in enhancing the reaction efficiency. The present work offered a convenient method to fabricate hollow transition metal oxides, which provided impetus for further development in environmental and energy applications. Highlights: Novel hollow CuFe2O4/C nanospheres were prepared by a facile and cost-effective method. CuFe2O4/C exhibited excellent photo-Fenton-like performance for antibiotic degradation. Outstanding photocatalytic performance was attributed to the specific hollow cavity-porous structure. A possible mechanism for H2O2 activation over hollow CuFe2O4/C nanospheres was detailed and discussed.

Preparation of Cotton Linters' Aerogel-Based C/NiFe2O4 Photocatalyst for Efficient Degradation of Methylene Blue

At present, the research focus has been aimed at the pursuit of the design and synthesis of catalysts for effective photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater, and further exploration of novel materials of the photodegradation catalyst. In this paper, the Sol-gel route after thermal treatment was used to produce NiFe₂O₄ carbon aerogel (NiFe₂O₄-CA) nanocomposites with cotton linter cellulose as the precursor of aerogel, by co-precipitating iron and nickel salts onto its substrate. The structure and composition of these materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Raman spectra, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM), high-resolution scanning electron microscope mapping (SEM-mapping), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET)'s surface area. The magnetic properties of the material were analyzed by a vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM). Moreover, diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and photo-luminescence spectroscopy (PL) characterized the photoelectric properties of this cellulose-aerogels-based NiFe₂O₄-CA. Methylene blue (MB) acted as the simulated pollutant, and the photocatalytic activity of NiFe₂O₄-CA nanocomposites under visible light was evaluated by adjusting H₂O₂ content and the pH value. The results showed that the optical absorption range of nickel ferrite was broadened by doping cellulose-aerogels-based carbon, which exerted more positive effects on photocatalytic reactions. This is because the doping of this aerogel carbon promoted a more uniform distribution of NiFe₂O₄ particles. Given the Methylene blue (MB) degradation reaction conformed to the first-order kinetic equation, the NiFe₂O₄-CA nanocomposites conducted excellent catalytic activity by maintaining almost 99% of the removal of MB (60 mg/L) within 180 min and upheld excellent stability over four consecutive cycles. This study indicated that NiFe₂O₄-CA nanocomposites reserved the potential as a future effective treatment of dye wastewater.

The Role of the Metabolism of Zinc and Manganese Ions in Human Cancerogenesis

Metal ion homeostasis is fundamental for life. Specifically, transition metals iron, manganese and zinc play a pivotal role in mitochondrial metabolism and energy generation, anti-oxidation defense, transcriptional regulation and the immune response. The misregulation of expression or mutations in ion carriers and the corresponding changes in Mn²⁺ and Zn²⁺ levels suggest that these ions play a pivotal role in cancer progression. Moreover, coordinated changes in Mn²⁺ and Zn²⁺ ion carriers have been detected, suggesting that particular mechanisms influenced by both ions might be required for the growth of cancer cells, metastasis and immune evasion. Here, we present a review of zinc and manganese pathophysiology suggesting that these ions might cooperatively regulate cancerogenesis. Zn and Mn effects converge on mitochondria-induced apoptosis, transcriptional regulation and the cGAS-STING signaling pathway, mediating the immune response. Both Zn and Mn influence cancer progression and impact treatment efficacy in animal models and clinical trials. We predict that novel strategies targeting the regulation of both Zn and Mn in cancer will complement current therapeutic strategies.

Unusual semiconductor-metal-semiconductor transitions in magnetite Fe3O4 nanoparticles

Magnetite (Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles were successfully prepared by a co-precipitation method. Rietveld refinement on the X-ray diffraction pattern confirmed the development of a single-phase cubic spinel structure with space group Fd3̄m. However, ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy suggested the presence of Fe³⁺ and Fe^2.5+ (mixed Fe³⁺ and Fe²⁺) ions at the tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the inverse spinel structure, respectively. Impedance spectroscopy measurements showed a discontinues variation in the temperature dependence of the sample's resistive behavior, indicating the appearance of semiconductor–metal–semiconductor like transitions between the temperature range of 293 and 373 K. A similar dual transition was also observed from the dielectric and conductivity measurements around the same temperature regions. The observed unusual transition is explained in term of the competitive effects among the hopping of localized/delocalized and short-range/long-range charge carriers present in the sample. Moreover, the prepared sample exhibits colossal dielectric permittivity (∼10⁶), reduced tangent loss (∼0.2) and moderate conductivity (>10⁻⁶ S cm⁻¹) values, making Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles a potential candidate for electromagnetic absorbing materials.

Herein, we report the existence of a novel semiconductor–metal–semiconductor type transition in Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles by employing impedance spectroscopy techniques.

Dependence of Structural, Morphological and Magnetic Properties of Manganese Ferrite on Ni-Mn Substitution

This paper presents the influence of Mn²⁺ substitution by Ni²⁺ on the structural, morphological and magnetic properties of Mn_1−xNi_xFe₂O₄@SiO₂ (x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00) nanocomposites (NCs) obtained by a modified sol-gel method. The Fourier transform infrared spectra confirm the formation of a SiO₂ matrix and ferrite, while the X-ray diffraction patterns show the presence of poorly crystalline ferrite at low annealing temperatures and highly crystalline mixed cubic spinel ferrite accompanied by secondary phases at high annealing temperatures. The lattice parameters gradually decrease, while the crystallite size, volume, and X-ray density of Mn_1−xNi_xFe₂O₄@SiO₂ NCs increase with increasing Ni content and follow Vegard’s law. The saturation magnetization, remanent magnetization, squareness, magnetic moment per formula unit, and anisotropy constant increase, while the coercivity decreases with increasing Ni content. These parameters are larger for the samples with the same chemical formula, annealed at higher temperatures. The NCs with high Ni content show superparamagnetic-like behavior, while the NCs with high Mn content display paramagnetic behavior.

Cobalt Ferrite Nanoparticles for Tumor Therapy: Effective Heating versus Possible Toxicity

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are widely considered for cancer treatment, in particular for magnetic hyperthermia (MHT). Thereby, MNPs are still being optimized for lowest possible toxicity on organisms while the magnetic properties are matched for best heating capabilities. In this study, the biocompatibility of 12 nm cobalt ferrite MNPs, functionalized with citrate ions, in different dosages on mice and rats of both sexes was investigated for 30 days after intraperitoneal injection. The animals' weight, behavior, and blood cells changes, as well as blood biochemical parameters are correlated to histological examination of organs revealing that cobalt ferrite MNPs do not have toxic effects at concentrations close to those used previously for efficient MHT. Moreover, these MNPs demonstrated high specific loss power (SLP) of about 400 W g-1. Importantly the MNPs retained their magnetic properties inside tumor tissue after intratumoral administration for several MHT cycles within three days. Thus, cobalt ferrite MNPs represent a perspective platform for tumor therapy by MHT due to their ability to provide effective heating without exerting a toxic effect on the organism. This opens up new avenues for smaller MNPs sizes while their heating efficiency is maintained.

Sol-Gel Synthesis, Structure, Morphology and Magnetic Properties of Ni0.6Mn0.4Fe2O4 Nanoparticles Embedded in SiO2 Matrix

The structure, morphology and magnetic properties of (Ni_0.6Mn_0.4Fe₂O₄)_α(SiO₂)_100−α (α = 0–100%) nanocomposites (NCs) produced by sol-gel synthesis were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). At low calcination temperatures (300 °C), poorly crystallized Ni_0.6Mn_0.4Fe₂O₄, while at high calcination temperatures, well-crystallized Ni_0.6Mn_0.4Fe₂O₄ was obtained along with α-Fe₂O₃, quartz, cristobalite or iron silicate secondary phase, depending on the Ni_0.6Mn_0.4Fe₂O₄ content in the NCs. The average crystallite size increases from 2.6 to 74.5 nm with the increase of calcination temperature and ferrite content embedded in the SiO₂ matrix. The saturation magnetization (Ms) enhances from 2.5 to 80.5 emu/g, the remanent magnetization (M_R) from 0.68 to 12.6 emu/g and the coercive field (H_C) from 126 to 260 Oe with increasing of Ni_0.6Mn_0.4Fe₂O₄ content in the NCs. The SiO₂ matrix has a diamagnetic behavior with a minor ferromagnetic fraction, Ni_0.6Mn_0.4Fe₂O₄ embedded in SiO₂ matrix displays superparamagnetic behavior, while unembedded Ni_0.6Mn_0.4Fe₂O₄ has a high-quality ferromagnetic behavior.

The Effect of Zn-Substitution on the Morphological, Magnetic, Cytotoxic, and In Vitro Hyperthermia Properties of Polyhedral Ferrite Magnetic Nanoparticles

The clinical translation of magnetic hyperthermia (MH) needs magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with enhanced heating properties and good biocompatibility. Many studies were devoted lately to the increase in the heating power of iron oxide MNPs by doping the magnetite structure with divalent cations. A series of MNPs with variable Zn/Fe molar ratios (between 1/10 and 1/1) were synthesized by using a high-temperature polyol method, and their physical properties were studied with different techniques (Transmission Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy). At low Zn doping (Zn/Fe ratio 1/10), a significant increase in the saturation magnetization (90 e.m.u./g as compared to 83 e.m.u./g for their undoped counterparts) was obtained. The MNPs' hyperthermia properties were assessed in alternating magnetic fields up to 65 kA/m at a frequency of 355 kHz, revealing specific absorption rates of up to 820 W/g. The Zn ferrite MNPs showed good biocompatibility against two cell lines (A549 cancer cell line and BJ normal cell line) with a drop of only 40% in the viability at the highest dose used (500 μg/cm2). Cellular uptake experiments revealed that the MNPs enter the cells in a dose-dependent manner with an almost 50% higher capacity of cancer cells to accommodate the MNPs. In vitro hyperthermia data performed on both cell lines indicate that the cancer cells are more sensitive to MH treatment with a 90% drop in viability after 30 min of MH treatment at 30 kA/m for a dose of 250 μg/cm2. Overall, our data indicate that Zn doping of iron oxide MNPs could be a reliable method to increase their hyperthermia efficiency in cancer cells.

Synergistic action of curcumin and cisplatin on spinel ferrite/hierarchical MCM-41 nanocomposite against MCF-7, HeLa and HCT 116 cancer cell line

Background

Platinum-based drugs are widely used in cancer therapy, but are known for toxic side effects and resistance. Combinational drug delivery represents an effective chemotherapeutic strategy, but often leads to an increased toxicity. Aim of this study is to test the co-delivery of cisplatin with natural antioxidants on hierarchial porous large surface area hexagonal nanocarriers for synergistic action.

Results

A series of structured mesoporous materials were impregnated with magnetic spinel ferrite (30% CuFe2O4) and then coated with curcumin (25% wt/wt). Mesosilicalite and MCM-41 with high curcumin release abilities were functionalized with cisplatin (5% wt/wt) for synergistic effect of combinational drugs. The cytotoxic efficiency of our nanocomposites was tested on cell viability of MCF7 (human breast cancer), human cervical cancer (HeLa), colorectal cancer (HCT116), and HFF (human foreskin fibroblasts) cell lines using the MTT cell viability assay. At a concentration of 0.1 mg/ml, CuFe2O4/mesosilicalite/curcumin/cisplatin resulted in 89.53% reduction in viability in MCF7, 94.03% in HeLa, 64% in HCT116 and 87% in HFF; whereas, CuFe2O4/MCM-41/curcumin/cisplatin resulted in 76% reduction in viability in MCF7, 64.46% in HeLa, 64% in HCT116 and 24% in HFF. The EC50 for CuFe2O4/mesosilicalite/curcumin/cisplatin was 81.23 µg/ml in MCF7, 47.55 µg/ml in HeLa, 48.96 µg/ml in HCT116 and 76.83 µg/ml in HFF. The EC50 for CuFe2O4/MCM-41/curcumin/cisplatin was 72.51 µg/ml in MCF7, 58.6 µg/ml in HeLa, 62.58 µg/ml in HCT116 and 154.2 µg/ml in HFF. Furthermore, cells treated with both nanocomposites had a high number of cleaved Caspase 3-positive cells suggesting that the reduction in cell viability was triggered by activating the apoptotic signaling pathway.

Conclusion

Our results show that CuFe2O4/MCM-41/curcumin/cisplatin is a better candidate for combinational drug therapy due to its lowest EC50 value and the wider difference in EC50 (a fold change) between cancerous and non-cancerous cell line.

Effects of Process Variables on Properties of CoFe2O4 Nanoparticles Prepared by Solvothermal Process

Controlling the morphology and magnetic properties of CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles is crucial for the synthesis of compatible materials for different applications. CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles were synthesized by a solvothermal method using cobalt nitrate, iron nitrate as precursors, and oleic acid as a surfactant. The formation of CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles was systematically observed by adjusting synthesis process conditions including reaction temperature, reaction time, and oleic acid concentration. Nearly spherical, monodispersed CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles were formed by changing the reaction time and reaction temperature. The oleic acid-coated CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles inhibited the growth of particle size after 1 h and, therefore, the particle size of CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles did not change significantly as the reaction time increased. Both without and with low oleic acid concentration, the large-sized cubic CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles showing ferromagnetic behavior were synthesized, while the small-sized CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles with superparamagnetic properties were obtained for the oleic acid concentration higher than 0.1 M. This study will become a basis for further research in the future to prepare the high-functional CoFe₂O₄ magnetic nanoparticles by a solvothermal process, which can be applied to bio-separation, biosensors, drug delivery, magnetic hyperthermia, etc.
