Role of Surface Curvature in Gold Nanostar Properties and Applications

Gold nanostars (AuNSs) are nanoparticles with intricate three-dimensional structures and shape-dependent optoelectronic properties. For example, AuNSs uniquely display three distinct surface curvatures, i.e. neutral, positive, and negative, which provide different environments to adsorbed ligands. Hence, these curvatures are used to introduce different surface chemistries in nanoparticles. This review summarizes and discusses the role of surface curvature in AuNS properties and its impact on biomedical and chemical applications, including surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, contrast agent performance, and catalysis. We examine the main synthetic approaches to generate AuNSs, control their morphology, and discuss their benefits and drawbacks. We also describe the optical characteristics of AuNSs and discuss how these depend on nanoparticle morphology. Finally, we analyze how AuNS surface curvature endows them with properties distinctly different from those of other nanoparticles, such as strong electromagnetic fields at the tips and increased hydrophilic environments at the indentations, together making AuNSs uniquely useful for biosensing, imaging, and local chemical manipulation.

High-order harmonics enhancement in laser-induced plasma

The methods of enhancement of the strong high-order harmonics of femtosecond pulses in laser-induced plasma are demonstrated. It comprises the application of the four techniques allowing the enhancement of harmonics in different spectral ranges. Among them are the selection of targets for ablation to create the conditions for resonance enhancement of single harmonic, formation of the quasi-phase-matching of a spectrally tunable group of harmonics, application of the two-color pump of plasma, and the formation of nanoparticles-contained plasmas. The number of generated coherent XUV photons increased in the region of single resonantly enhanced harmonic (62 nm) and the shorter-wavelength region (30-50 nm). The above techniques of harmonics enhancement allowed a significant (up to 50 times) growth in a whole harmonic yield in the case of indium plasma. We discuss the reasons preventing the joint implementation of the four methods of harmonics enhancement in the same spectral region.

Quantum-Dot-Induced Modification of Surface Functionalization for Active Applications of Whispering Gallery Mode Resonators

Quantum dots can modify the properties of the whispering gallery mode resonators (WGMRs) used in various potential applications. A deposition of a suitable nanomaterial for the surface functionalization of WGMRs allows for the achievement of high quality (Q) factors. Here, we show that the WGMR surface can be functionalized using quantum dots. We demonstrate that WGMRs covered with thin layers of HgS and PbS quantum dots are suitable for third-harmonic generation due to the high Q factor of the developed microresonators, thus significantly lowering the pumping power required for nonlinear optical interactions.

Determining the laser-induced release probability of a nanoparticle from a soft substrate

This Letter presents a study of laser-induced nanoparticle release from a soft substrate in air under different conditions. A continuous wave (CW) laser heats a nanoparticle and causes a rapid thermal expansion of the substrate, which gives an upward momentum that releases the nanoparticle from the substrate. The release probability of different nanoparticles from different substrates under different laser intensities is studied. The effects of surface properties of substrates and surface charges of the nanoparticles on the release are also investigated. The mechanism of nanoparticle release demonstrated in this work is different from that of laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT). Owing to the simplicity of this technology and the wide availability of commercial nanoparticles, this nanoparticle release technology may find applications in nanoparticle characterization and nanomanufacturing.

Faris H, Ahmed H, Mamdouh S, Thambiratnam K, Mohamed T. Using Femtosecond Laser Pulses to Explore the Nonlinear Optical Properties of Au NP Colloids That Were Synthesized by Laser Ablation

In this study, we experimentally investigated the nonlinear optical properties of Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) that were prepared in pure distilled water using the laser ablation method. The Au NPs were prepared using a nanosecond Nd:YAG laser with an ablation time of 5 or 10 min at a constant laser energy of 100 mJ. The structure and the linear optical properties of the Au NPs were investigated using a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and UV-visible spectrophotometer analysis, respectively. The TEM measurements showed that the average size of the Au NPs varied from 20.3 to 14.1 nm, depending on the laser ablation time. The z-scan technique was used to investigate the nonlinear refractive index (n2) and nonlinear absorption coefficient (γ) of the Au NPs, which were irradiated at different excitation wavelengths that ranged from 740 to 820 nm and at different average powers that ranged from 0.8 to 1.6 W. The Au NP samples exhibited a reverse saturable absorption (RSA) behavior that increased when the excitation wavelength and/or incident laser power increased. In addition, the Au NPs acted as a self-defocusing material whenever the excitation wavelength or incident power were modified.

Green route synthesis of alpinia calcarata functionalized gold nanoparticles for nonlinear optical applications

Gold nanoparticles are synthesized from alpinia calcarata extract. The synthesized nanoparticles are considered for their structural, morphological and nonlinear optical properties. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the structural purity of the prepared samples. FTIR confirmed the presence of biomolecules involved in the reduction and stabilization process. UV–visible spectroscopic studies confirmed the Surface Plasmon Resonance of the prepared nanoparticle. HRTEM exposed the spherical shape morphology of the prepared gold nanoparticles. Zeta potential analysis inferred the stabilization of gold nanoparticles. The synthesised gold nanoparticles are found to be poly-dispersed with an average size of 15 nm. The studies suggest that the glucose and its complex in the alpinia calcarata extract are responsible for the reduction nanoparticles, whereas proteins act as capping agents around the nanoparticles. The Z-scan studies discovered the nonlinear optical behaviour and thus measured its parameters.

Nanoscale optical parametric amplification through super-nonlinearity induction

Optical parametric amplification (OPA) is a nonlinear process through which a low-power input wave is amplified by extracting energy from an interaction medium that is energized by a high-intensity pump wave. For a significant amplification of an input wave, a sufficiently long interaction medium is required, which is usually on the order of a few centimeters. Therefore, in the small scale, OPA is considered unfeasible, and this prevents it from being employed in micro and nanoscale devices. There have been recent studies that proposed microscale OPA through the use of micro-resonators. However, there is currently no study that has suggested high-gain nanoscale OPA, which could be quite useful for implementing nanoscale optical devices. This study aims to show that nanoscale OPA is feasible through the concurrent maximization of the pump wave induced electric energy density and the polarization density (nonlinear coupling strength) within the interaction medium, which enables a very high amount of energy to be transferred to the input wave that is sufficient to amplify the input wave with a gain factor that is comparable to those provided by centimeter scale nonlinear crystals. The computational results of our OPA model match with the experimental ones in the context of sum-harmonic generation, which is the wave-mixing process that gives rise to OPA, with an accuracy of 97.6%. The study aims to make room for further investigation of nanoscale OPA through adaptive optics and/or nonlinear programming algorithms for the enhancement of the process.

Giant Third-Order Nonlinear Response of Mixed Perovskite Nanocrystals

Mixed (FAPbI3)₀.₉₂(MAPbBr3)₀.₀₈ perovskite thin films exhibit strong nonlinear optical responses, rendering them promising candidates for applications in photonics and optical communications. In this work, we present a systematic study on the ultrafast third-order nonlinear optical processes in mixed perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) by exploring the generation of third harmonic radiation and giant two-photon absorption-based photoluminescence (PL) when excited by femtosecond laser pulses of a 1030 nm central wavelength. A comparative analysis of the coherent third harmonic generation in the thin-film-containing perovskite nanocrystals has shown a 40× enhancement of the third harmonic signal compared to the signal generated in the pure quartz substrate. The cubic dependence of the third-nonlinear optical response of the (FAPbI₃)₀.₉₂(MAPbBr₃)₀.₀₈ perovskites on the intensity of the driving radiation was identified using broadband 38 femtosecond driving pulses. The positive nonlinear refractive index (γ = +1.4 × 10⁻¹² cm²·W⁻¹) is found to play an important role in improving the phase-matching conditions of the interacting pulses by generating a strong third order harmonic. The giant two-photon absorption (TPA)-assisted PL peak was monitored and a blue shift of the PL was obtained in the higher intensity range of the laser pulses, with the absorption coefficient β estimated to be~+7.0 cm·MW⁻¹ at a 1030 nm laser wavelength.

Computational Approach to Dynamic Systems through Similarity Measure and Homotopy Analysis Method for Renewable Energy

To achieve considerably high thermal conductivity, hybrid nanofluids are some of the best alternatives that can be considered as renewable energy resources and as replacements for the traditional ways of heat transfer through fluids. The subject of the present work is to probe the heat and mass transfer flow of an ethylene glycol based hybrid nanofluid (Au-ZnO/C2H6O2) in three dimensions with homogeneous-heterogeneous chemical reactions and the nanoparticle shape factor. The applications of appropriate similarity transformations are done to make the corresponding non-dimensional equations, which are used in the analytic computation through the homotopy analysis method (HAM). Graphical representations are shown for the behaviors of the parameters and profiles. The hybrid nanofluid (Au-ZnO/C2H6O2) has a great influence on the flow, temperature, and cubic autocatalysis chemical reactions. The axial velocity and the heat transfer increase and the concentration of the cubic autocatalytic chemical reactions decreases with increasing stretching parameters. The tangential velocity and the concentration of cubic autocatalytic chemical reactions decrease and the heat transfer increases with increasing Reynolds number. A close agreement of the present work with the published study is achieved.

High-Fidelity Harmonic Generation in Optical Micro-Resonators Using BFGS Algorithm

Harmonic generation is an attractive research field that finds a variety of application areas. However, harmonic generation within a medium of micron-scale interaction length limits the magnitude of nonlinear coupling and leads to poor harmonic generation efficiency. In this study, we present a constrained non-linear programming approach based on the Quasi-Newton Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno (BFGS) algorithm to obtain high-fidelity harmonic generation in optical micro-resonators. Using this approach, one can achieve high-intensity harmonic generation in a simple Fabry–Perot type optical micro-resonator. The generation of super-intense harmonics at a typical ultraviolet (UV)-ablation frequency of 820 THz and at pure yellow-light (515 THz) is investigated in particular. Moreover, we achieved more than 98% accuracy compared to well-known theoretical results. Our approach enables the design of highly efficient microscale harmonic generators to be used in integrated photonic devices.

Nanomaterials in Cosmetics: Recent Updates

This review paper collects the recent updates regarding the use of nanomaterials in cosmetics. Special focus is given to the applications of nanomaterials in the cosmetic industry, their unique features, as well as the advantages of nanoscale ingredients compared to non-nanoscale products. The state-of-the-art practices for physicochemical and toxicological characterization of nanomaterials are also reviewed. Moreover, special focus is given to the current regulations and safety assessments that are currently in place regarding the use of nanomaterials in cosmetics—the new 2019 European guidance for the safety assessment of nanomaterials in cosmetics, together with the new proposed methodologies for the toxicity evaluation of nanomaterials. Concerns over health risks have limited the further incorporation of nanomaterials in cosmetics, and since new nanomaterials may be used in the future by the cosmetic industry, a detailed characterization and risk assessment are needed to fulfill the standard safety requirements.

High-Order Harmonic Generation in Au Nanoparticle-Contained Plasmas

Gold nanoparticles (NPs) have a wide range of applications in various fields. Here, we present high-order nonlinear optical studies of the plasmas produced from ablation of Au bulk targets and Au NP films deposited on paper and glass substrates. Experimentally, we analyze high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from gold NPs-containing plasmas. The HHG is produced by 35-fs pulses at 800 and 400 nm, while the plasmas are produced by femtosecond (35 fs, 800 nm), picosecond (200 ps, 800 nm), and nanosecond (5 ns, 1064 nm) pulses, respectively. High-order harmonics produced from ablated Au NPs on paper were 40 times stronger than the HHG from that ablated from the Au bulk targets. Through molecular dynamic simulations, we investigate the formation of gold NPs during laser ablation of a metal surface under different conditions.

Nonlinear optical characterization of copper oxide nanoellipsoids

Recently, nonspherical nanoparticles took attention due to advanced properties of these structures. We report the study of the nonlinear optical properties of copper oxide nanoellipsoids using 800 nm and 400 nm, 60 fs pulses. The optical limiting effect of copper oxide nanoellipsoids is analyzed. The influence of band gap of copper nanoparticles and copper oxide nanoellipsoids on their nonlinear optical response was studied. For the first time, the low- and high-order nonlinear optical responses of copper nanoellipsoids were studied. The magnitudes of nonlinear optical parameters of the suspension of copper oxide nanoellipsoids were measured to be γ = 1.23 × 10⁻¹⁵ cm² W⁻¹, and β = 1.0 × 10⁻¹¹ cm W⁻¹ respectively. We observed the four-fold enhancement of the nonlinear optical refraction of copper oxide nanoellipsoids at the wavelength of 400 nm, 60 fs probe pulses compared to 800 nm radiation. We also analyzed the high-order nonlinear response of CuO nanoellipsoids through generation of high-order harmonics of 800 nm, 60 fs pulses in the plasmas produced during laser ablation of the nanoellipsoid-contained targets. We demonstrated the harmonics up to the 35th order (E = 50 eV) in case of single-color pump and 24th (30 eV) in case of two-color pump.
