Facile Fabrication of a Self-Healing Temperature-Sensitive Sensor Based on Ionogels and Its Application in Detection Human Breath

Mechanically Robust and Room Temperature Self-Healing Ionogel Based on Ionic Liquid Inhibited Reversible Reaction of Disulfide Bonds

Although highly desired, it is difficult to develop mechanically robust and room temperature self-healing ionic liquid-based gels (ionogels), which are very promising for next-generation stretchable electronic devices. Herein, it is discovered that the ionic liquid significantly reduces the reversible reaction rate of disulfide bonds without altering its thermodynamic equilibrium constant via small molecule model reaction and activation energy evolution of the dissociation of the dynamic network. This inhibitory effect would reduce the dissociated units in the dynamic polymeric network, beneficial for the strength of the ionogel. Furthermore, aromatic disulfide bonds with high reversibility are embedded in the polyurethane to endow the ionogel with superior room temperature self-healing performance. Isocyanates with an asymmetric alicyclic structure are chosen to provide optimal exchange efficiencies for the embedded disulfide bonds relative to aromatic and linear aliphatic. Carbonyl-rich poly(ethylene-glycol-adipate) diols are selected as soft segments to provide sufficient interaction sites for ionic liquids to endow the ionogel with high transparency, stretchability, and elasticity. Finally, a self-healing ionogel with a tensile strength of 1.65 ± 0.08 MPa is successfully developed, which is significantly higher than all the reported transparent room temperature self-healing ionogel and its application in a 3D printed stretchable numeric keyboard is exemplified.

Ionogels: recent advances in design, material properties and emerging biomedical applications

Ionic liquid (IL)-based gels (ionogels) have received considerable attention due to their unique advantages in ionic conductivity and their biphasic liquid-solid phase property. In ionogels, the negligibly volatile ionic liquid is retained in the interconnected 3D pore structure. On the basis of these physical features as well as the chemical properties of well-chosen ILs, there is emerging interest in the anti-bacterial and biocompatibility aspects. In this review, the recent achievements of ionogels for biomedical applications are summarized and discussed. Following a brief introduction of the various types of ILs and their key physicochemical and biological properties, the design strategies and fabrication methods of ionogels are presented by means of different confining networks. These sophisticated ionogels with diverse functions, aimed at biomedical applications, are further classified into several active domains, including wearable strain sensors, therapeutic delivery systems, wound healing and biochemical detections. Finally, the challenges and possible strategies for the design of future ionogels by integrating materials science with a biological interface are proposed.

Ionic Liquid-Based Polymer Nanocomposites for Sensors, Energy, Biomedicine, and Environmental Applications: Roadmap to the Future

Current interest toward ionic liquids (ILs) stems from some of their novel characteristics, like low vapor pressure, thermal stability, and nonflammability, integrated through high ionic conductivity and broad range of electrochemical strength. Nowadays, ionic liquids represent a new category of chemical-based compounds for developing superior and multifunctional substances with potential in several fields. ILs can be used in solvents such as salt electrolyte and additional materials. By adding functional physiochemical characteristics, a variety of IL-based electrolytes can also be used for energy storage purposes. It is hoped that the present review will supply guidance for future research focused on IL-based polymer nanocomposites electrolytes for sensors, high performance, biomedicine, and environmental applications. Additionally, a comprehensive overview about the polymer-based composites' ILs components, including a classification of the types of polymer matrix available is provided in this review. More focus is placed upon ILs-based polymeric nanocomposites used in multiple applications such as electrochemical biosensors, energy-related materials, biomedicine, actuators, environmental, and the aviation and aerospace industries. At last, existing challenges and prospects in this field are discussed and concluding remarks are provided.

Design of hydrogel-based wearable EEG electrodes for medical applications

The electroencephalogram (EEG) is considered to be a promising method for studying brain disorders. Because of its non-invasive nature, subjects take a lower risk compared to some other invasive methods, while the systems record the brain signal. With the technological advancement of neural and material engineering, we are in the process of achieving continuous monitoring of neural activity through wearable EEG. In this article, we first give a brief introduction to EEG bands, circuits, wired/wireless EEG systems, and analysis algorithms. Then, we review the most recent advances in the interfaces used for EEG recordings, focusing on hydrogel-based EEG electrodes. Specifically, the advances for important figures of merit for EEG electrodes are reviewed. Finally, we summarize the potential medical application of wearable EEG systems.

Wearable multichannel pulse condition monitoring system based on flexible pressure sensor arrays

Pulse diagnosis is an irreplaceable part of traditional Chinese medical science. However, application of the traditional pulse monitoring method was restricted in the modernization of Chinese medical science since it was difficult to capture real signals and integrate obscure feelings with a modern data platform. Herein, a novel multichannel pulse monitoring platform based on traditional Chinese medical science pulse theory and wearable electronics was proposed. The pulse sensing platform simultaneously detected pulse conditions at three pulse positions (Chi, Cun, and Guan). These signals were fitted to smooth surfaces to enable 3-dimensional pulse mapping, which vividly revealed the shape of the pulse length and width and compensated for the shortcomings of traditional single-point pulse sensors. Moreover, the pulse sensing system could measure the pulse signals from different individuals with different conditions and distinguish the differences in pulse signals. In addition, this system could provide full information on the temporal and spatial dimensions of a person's pulse waveform, which is similar to the true feelings of doctors' fingertips. This innovative, cost-effective, easily designed pulse monitoring platform based on flexible pressure sensor arrays may provide novel applications in modernization of Chinese medical science or intelligent health care.

Ionic Liquid-Based Materials for Biomedical Applications

Ionic liquids (ILs) have been extensively explored and implemented in different areas, ranging from sensors and actuators to the biomedical field. The increasing attention devoted to ILs centers on their unique properties and possible combination of different cations and anions, allowing the development of materials with specific functionalities and requirements for applications. Particularly for biomedical applications, ILs have been used for biomaterials preparation, improving dissolution and processability, and have been combined with natural and synthetic polymer matrixes to develop IL-polymer hybrid materials to be employed in different fields of the biomedical area. This review focus on recent advances concerning the role of ILs in the development of biomaterials and their combination with natural and synthetic polymers for different biomedical areas, including drug delivery, cancer therapy, tissue engineering, antimicrobial and antifungal agents, and biosensing.

Recent developments in sensors for wearable device applications

Wearable devices are a new means of human-computer interaction with different functions, underlying principles, and forms. They have been widely used in the medical and health fields, in applications including physiological signal monitoring; sports; and environmental detection, while subtly affecting people's lives and work. Wearable sensors as functional components of wearable devices have become a research focus. In this review, we systematically summarize recent progress in the development of wearable sensors and related devices. Wearable sensors in medical health applications, according to the principle of measurement, are divided into physical and chemical quantity detection. These sensors can monitor and measure specific parameters, thereby enabling continuously improvements in the quality and feasibility of medical treatment. Through the detection of human movement, such as breathing, heartbeat, or bending, wearable sensors can evaluate body movement and monitor an individual's physical performance and health status. Wearable devices detecting aspects of the environment while maintaining high adaptability to the human body can be used to evaluate environmental quality and obtain more accurate environmental information. The ultimate goal of this review is to provide new insights and directions for the future development and broader application of wearable devices in various fields.Graphical abstract.

Highly sensitive and wide-detection range pressure sensor constructed on a hierarchical-structured conductive fabric as a human-machine interface

With the booming development of flexible pressure sensors, the need for multifunctional and high-performance pressure sensor has become increasingly important. Although great progress has been made in the novel structure and sensing mechanism of the pressure sensor, the trade-off between the sensitivity and the wide-detection range has prevented its development, further restricting its application in wearable human-machine interfaces (WHMIs). Herein, a novel pressure sensor based on the hierarchical conductive fabric was fabricated and purposed as a WHMI. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) nanowires (PEDOT NWs) and cellulose nanofibers (CNF) were stacked on a conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) fabric to form a special spatial multi-level hierarchical structure inside the fabric, which is a breakthrough for the improvement of the sensor's performance and makes the fabrication process of in situ polymerization suitable for large-scale production. The multi-level hierarchical structures endowed the pressure sensor with characteristics of high sensitivity (15.78 kPa-1), a wide-detection range from 30 Pa to 700 kPa, and outstanding stability toward compression and bending deformation. Benefiting from its excellent performance, a human-machine interface based on arrayed pressure sensors and signal processing system can control the illumination of the LED array and effectively capture finger motion to control the eight-direction movement of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). This improved performance of the pressure sensor based on the hierarchical conductive fabric made it a widespread application in intelligent fabric, electronic skin, human-machine interfaces, and robotics.

Stretchable respiration sensors: Advanced designs and multifunctional platforms for wearable physiological monitoring

Respiration signals are a vital sign of life. Monitoring human breath provides critical information for health assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. Stretchable and wearable respiration sensors have recently attracted considerable interest toward monitoring physiological signals in the era of real time and portable healthcare systems. This review provides a snapshot on the recent development of stretchable sensors and wearable technologies for respiration monitoring. The article offers the fundamental guideline on the sensing mechanisms and design concepts of stretchable sensors for detecting vital breath signals such as temperature, humidity, airflow, stress and strain. A highlight on the recent progress in the integration of variable sensing components outlines feasible pathways towards multifunctional and multimodal sensor platforms. Structural designs of nanomaterials and platforms for stretchable respiration sensors are reviewed.

Three-Dimensional Self-Healable Touch Sensing Artificial Skin Device

Human skin is a unique functional material that perfectly covers body parts having various complicated shapes, spontaneously heals mechanical damage, and senses a touch. E-skin devices have been actively researched, focusing on the sensing functionality of skin. However, most e-skin devices still have limitations in their shapes, and it is a challenging issue of interest to realize multiple functionalities in one device as human skin does. Here, new artificial skin devices are demonstrated in application-oriented three-dimensional (3D) shapes, which can sense exact touch location and heal mechanical damage spontaneously. Beyond the conventional film-type e-skin devices, the artificial skin devices are fabricated in optimal three-dimensional structures, via systematic material design and characterization of ion-conductive self-healing hydrogel system and its extrusion-based 3D printing. The ring-shaped and fingertip-shaped artificial skin devices are successfully fabricated to fit perfectly on finger models, and shows large electronic signal contrast, ∼5.4 times increase in current, upon a human finger contact. Furthermore, like human skin, the device provides the exact positional information of an arbitrary touch location on a three-dimensional artificial skin device without complicated device fabrication or data processing.
