Synthesis of Magnetic Ferrite Nanoparticles with High Hyperthermia Performance via a Controlled Co-Precipitation Method

Control of Anisotropy and Magnetic Hyperthermia Effect by Addition of Cobalt on Magnetite Nanoparticles

Magnetic hyperthermia (MH) has emerged as a promising technology with diverse applications in medical and technological fields, leveraging the remote induction of temperature elevation through an alternating magnetic field. While Fe3O4 nanoparticles with an average size around 12-25 nm are commonly employed in MH systems, this study introduces a strategy to produce smaller particles (less than or equal to 10 nm) with enhanced heating efficiency, as measured by specific power absorption (SPA). We conducted an exhaustive and detailed investigation into the morphological and magnetic properties of CoxFe3-xO4 nanoparticles, aiming to optimize their MH response. By varying the Co content, we successfully tuned the effective magnetic anisotropy while maintaining saturation magnetization nearly constant. The MH analysis indicates that these nanoparticles predominantly heat through the Néel mechanism, demonstrating robust reproducibility across different concentrations, viscosity mediums, and ac field conditions. Notably, we identified an optimal anisotropy or Co concentration that maximizes SPA, crucial for developing magnetic systems requiring particles with specific sizes. This work contributes to advancing the understanding and application of MH, particularly in tailoring nanoparticle properties for targeted and efficient heat generation in various contexts.

Nanostructured Magnetic Particles for Removing Cyanotoxins: Assessing Effectiveness and Toxicity In Vitro

The rise in cyanobacterial blooms due to eutrophication and climate change has increased cyanotoxin presence in water. Most current water treatment plants do not effectively remove these toxins, posing a potential risk to public health. This study introduces a water treatment approach using nanostructured beads containing magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) for easy removal from liquid suspension, coated with different adsorbent materials to eliminate cyanotoxins. Thirteen particle types were produced using activated carbon, CMK-3 mesoporous carbon, graphene, chitosan, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidised cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF), esterified pectin, and calcined lignin as an adsorbent component. The particles' effectiveness for detoxification of microcystin-LR (MC-LR), cylindrospermopsin (CYN), and anatoxin-A (ATX-A) was assessed in an aqueous solution. Two particle compositions presented the best adsorption characteristics for the most common cyanotoxins. In the conditions tested, mesoporous carbon nanostructured particles, P1-CMK3, provide good removal of MC-LR and Merck-activated carbon nanostructured particles, P9-MAC, can remove ATX-A and CYN with high and fair efficacy, respectively. Additionally, in vitro toxicity of water treated with each particle type was evaluated in cultured cell lines, revealing no alteration of viability in human renal, neuronal, hepatic, and intestinal cells. Although further research is needed to fully characterise this new water treatment approach, it appears to be a safe, practical, and effective method for eliminating cyanotoxins from water.

Magnetic nanosystem a tool for targeted delivery and diagnostic application: Current challenges and recent advancement

Over the last two decades, researchers have paid more attention to magnetic nanosystems due to their wide application in diverse fields. The metal nanomaterials' antimicrobial and biocidal properties make them an essential nanosystem for biomedical applications. Moreover, the magnetic nanosystems could have also been used for diagnosis and treatment because of their magnetic, optical, and fluorescence properties. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) and quantum dots (QDs) are the most widely used magnetic nanosystems prepared by a simple process. By surface modification, researchers have recently been working on conjugating metals like silica, copper, and gold with magnetic nanosystems. This hybridization of the nanosystems modifies the structural characteristics of the nanomaterials and helps to improve their efficacy for targeted drug and gene delivery. The hybridization of metals with various nanomaterials like micelles, cubosomes, liposomes, and polymeric nanomaterials is gaining more interest due to their nanometer size range and nontoxic, biocompatible nature. Moreover, they have good injectability and higher targeting ability by accumulation at the target site by application of an external magnetic field. The present article discussed the magnetic nanosystem in more detail regarding their structure, properties, interaction with the biological system, and diagnostic applications.

Advancements in enzyme immobilization on magnetic nanomaterials: toward sustainable industrial applications

Enzymes are widely used in biofuels, food, and pharmaceuticals. The immobilization of enzymes on solid supports, particularly magnetic nanomaterials, enhances their stability and catalytic activity. Magnetic nanomaterials are chosen for their versatility, large surface area, and superparamagnetic properties, which allow for easy separation and reuse in industrial processes. Researchers focus on the synthesis of appropriate nanomaterials tailored for specific purposes. Immobilization protocols are predefined and adapted to both enzymes and support requirements for optimal efficiency. This review provides a detailed exploration of the application of magnetic nanomaterials in enzyme immobilization protocols. It covers methods, challenges, advantages, and future perspectives, starting with general aspects of magnetic nanomaterials, their synthesis, and applications as matrices for solid enzyme stabilization. The discussion then delves into existing enzymatic immobilization methods on magnetic nanomaterials, highlighting advantages, challenges, and potential applications. Further sections explore the industrial use of various enzymes immobilized on these materials, the development of enzyme-based bioreactors, and prospects for these biocatalysts. In summary, this review provides a concise comparison of the use of magnetic nanomaterials for enzyme stabilization, highlighting potential industrial applications and contributing to manufacturing optimization.

Fabrication of PEGylated SPIONs-Loaded Niosome for Codelivery of Paclitaxel and Trastuzumab for Breast Cancer Treatment: In Vivo Study

There is a growing appeal for engineering drug delivery systems for controlled and local drug delivery. Conjugation of antibodies on the nanocarriers for targeted chemotherapeutic drugs has always been one of the main techniques. This work aims to develop a polycaprolactone/chitosan electrospun mat incorporated with paclitaxel/Fe3O4-loaded niosomes (SPNs) decorated with trastuzumab (TbNs) for cancer therapy. SPNs and TbNs were analyzed by DLS, zeta potential, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Fabricated mats with distinct concentrations of TbNs were classified into four groups (G0 (0), G1 (1), G2 (2.5), and G3 (5%)) and were studied physicochemically, mechanically, and biologically. Paclitaxel release was also studied for 7 days under an alternative magnetic field (AMF). The optimized mat was nominated for an in vivo study to evaluate its tumor growth inhibition. Based on the results, the TbNs had a spherical core and shell morphology with a smooth surface. The zeta potential and the mean size of TbNs were equal to -14.7 mV and 221 nm. TbNs did not affect the morphology and quality of nanofibers, but in general, the presence of TbNs increased the elastic modulus, water uptake, and degradation. Regarding the release study, AMF showed a significant increase in accelerating paclitaxel release from mats, and most releases belonged to the mat with 5% of TbNs. Results from the in vivo study showed the effective and synergistic effects of AMF on drug release and significant tumor growth inhibition. To summarize, the proposed nanocarrier under AMF can be a good candidate for cancer therapy.

Magnetic-Plasmonic Nanocomposites as Versatile Substrates for Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) Spectroscopy

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy, a highly sensitive technique for detecting trace-level analytes, relies on plasmonic substrates. The choice of substrate, its morphology, and the excitation wavelength are crucial in SERS applications. To address advanced SERS requirements, the design and use of efficient nanocomposite substrates have become increasingly important. Notably, magnetic-plasmonic (MP) nanocomposites, which combine magnetic and plasmonic properties within a single particle system, stand out as promising nanoarchitectures with versatile applications in nanomedicine and SERS spectroscopy. In this review, we present an overview of MP nanocomposite fabrication methods, explore surface functionalization strategies, and evaluate their use in SERS. Our focus is on how different nanocomposite designs, magnetic and plasmonic properties, and surface modifications can significantly influence their SERS-related characteristics, thereby affecting their performance in specific applications such as separation, environmental monitoring, and biological applications. Reviewing recent studies highlights the multifaceted nature of these materials, which have great potential to transform SERS applications across a range of fields, from medical diagnostics to environmental monitoring. Finally, we discuss the prospects of MP nanocomposites, anticipating favorable developments that will make substantial contributions to various scientific and technological areas.

Effect of particle size and composition on local magnetic hyperthermia of chitosan-Mg1-xCoxFe2O4 nanohybrid

In this study, Mg1-xCoxFe2O4 (0≤x ≤ 1 with ∆x = 0.1) or MCFO nanoparticles were synthesized using a chemical co-precipitation method and annealed at 200, 400, 600, and 800°C respectively to investigate the structural properties of the materials by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Controlled annealing increased particle size for each value of x. The aim was to investigate how specific loss power (SLP) and maximum temperature (Tmax) during local magnetic hyperthermia were affected by structural alterations associated with particle size and composition. The lattice parameter, X-ray density, ionic radius, hopping length, bond length, cation-cation distance, and cation-anion distance increase with an increase in Co2+ content. Raman and FTIR spectroscopy reveal changes in cation distribution with Co2+ content and particle size. Magnetic properties measured by the physical property measurement system (PPMS) showed saturation magnetization (Ms), coercivity (Hc), remanent magnetization (Mr/Ms), and anisotropy constant (K1) of the Mg1-xCoxFe2O4 nanoparticles increase with Co2+ content and particle size. When exposed to an rf magnetic field, the nanohybrids experienced an increase in both the SLP (specific loss power) and Tmax (maximum temperature) as the particle size initially increased. However, these values reached their peak at critical particle size and subsequently decreased. This occurs since a modest increase in anisotropy, resulting from the presence of Co2+ and larger particle size, facilitates Néel and Brownian relaxation. However, for high anisotropy values and particle size, the Néel and Brownian relaxations are hindered, leading to the emergence of a critical size. The critical size increases as the Co2+ content decreases, but it decreases as the Co2+ content increases, a consequence of higher anisotropy with the increase in Co2+. Additionally, it is noteworthy that the maximum temperature (Tmax) rises as the concentration of nanohybrids grows, but the specific loss power (SLP) decreases. An increased concentration of chitosan-MCFO nanohybrids inhibits both the Néel and Brownian relaxation processes, reducing specific loss power.

Magnetic Nanoparticles: A Review on Synthesis, Characterization, Functionalization, and Biomedical Applications

Nowadays, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are applied in numerous fields, especially in biomedical applications. Since biofluidic samples and biological tissues are nonmagnetic, negligible background signals can interfere with the magnetic signals from MNPs in magnetic biosensing and imaging applications. In addition, the MNPs can be remotely controlled by magnetic fields, which make it possible for magnetic separation and targeted drug delivery. Furthermore, due to the unique dynamic magnetizations of MNPs when subjected to alternating magnetic fields, MNPs are also proposed as a key tool in cancer treatment, an example is magnetic hyperthermia therapy. Due to their distinct surface chemistry, good biocompatibility, and inducible magnetic moments, the material and morphological structure design of MNPs has attracted enormous interest from a variety of scientific domains. Herein, a thorough review of the chemical synthesis strategies of MNPs, the methodologies to modify the MNPs surface for better biocompatibility, the physicochemical characterization techniques for MNPs, as well as some representative applications of MNPs in disease diagnosis and treatment are provided. Further portions of the review go into the diagnostic and therapeutic uses of composite MNPs with core/shell structures as well as a deeper analysis of MNP properties to learn about potential biomedical applications.

Fabrication and investigation of a pentamerous composite based on calix[4]arene functionalized graphene oxide grafted with silk fibroin, cobalt ferrite, and alginate

This paper presents a new scaffold made from graphene oxide nanosheets, calix[4]arene supramolecules, silk fibroin proteins, cobalt ferrite nanoparticles, and alginate hydrogel (GO-CX[4]/SF/CoFe2O4/Alg). After preparing the composite, we conducted various analyses to examine its structure. These analyses included FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDS, VSM, DLS, and zeta potential tests. Additionally, we performed tests to evaluate the swelling ratio, rheological properties, and compressive mechanical strength of the material. The biological capability of the composite was tested through biocompatiblity, anticancer, hemolysis, antibacterial anti-biofilm assays. Besides, the rheological properties and swelling behaviour of the composite were studied. The results showed that the scaffold is biocompatible with Hu02 cells and the cell viability percentages of 85.23 %, 82.78 %, and 80.18 % for were acquired for 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively. In contrast, the cell viability percentage of BT549 cancer cells were obtained 65.79 %, 60.45 % and 58.16 % for same period which confirmed notable anticancer activity of the product composite. Moreover, a significant antibacterial growth inhibition against E. coli and S. aureus species highlights its potential as an effective antibacterial agent. Furthermore, the observed minimal hemolytic effect (6.56 %) and strong inhibition of P. aeruginosa biofilm formation with a low OD value (0.24) indicate notable hemocompatibility and antibacterial activity.

Impact of nickel substitution on structural, dielectric, magnetic, and electrochemical properties of copper ferrite nanostructures for energy storage devices

Nickel-substituted copper ferrite nanoparticles (NP) (Cu1-xNixFe2O4) were prepared using a cost-effective hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern revealed a single-phase cubic spinel structure. The increase in lattice parameters and decrease in crystallite size are associated with the replacement of Cu ions by Ni ions in the host lattice of copper ferrite. The optimized Cu0.95Ni0.05Fe2O4 composition was subsequently annealed at 750 °C and 850 °C for further studies. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis shows the existence of two promising fundamental adsorption peaks at 465 and 582 cm-1, related to the metal ion stretching vibrations at the tetrahedral (A) and octahedral (B) sites, respectively. The local disorder at both the A and B sublattices upon the incorporation of Ni was observed from the Raman analysis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) images shows the formation of agglomerates composed of nano-sized spherical particles. A high Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) surface area was achieved 17.25 m2/g with a particle stability of -11.1 mV obtained by the zeta potential. Both the dielectric loss and dielectric constant are decreased, whereas the AC conductivity gets increased with increasing frequency. The magnetization-field hysteresis curves exhibited ferromagnetic behavior with a pseudo-single domain, and the cyclic voltammetry study revealed a pseudocapacitive trend. This study highlights the importance of Ni substitution to control the physicochemical properties of spinel-phase CuFe2O4 for diverse applications, such as energy storage and lithium-ion batteries.

Low-frequency magnetic fields potentiate plasma-modified magneto-electric nanoparticle drug loading for anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo

A multiferroic nanostructure of manganese ferrite barium-titanate called magneto-electric nanoparticles (MENs) was synthesized by a co-precipitation method. FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, TEM, and X-ray diffraction confirmed the presence of spinel core and perovskite shell phases with average crystallite sizes of 70-90 nm. Magnetic, optical, and magnetoelectrical properties of MENs were investigated using VSM, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, DLS, and EIS spectroscopy techniques. After pre-activation by low-pressure argon (Ar) plasma, the MENs were functionalized by a highly hydrophilic acrylic acid and Oxygen (AAc+O2) mixture to produce COOH and C=O-rich surfaces. The loading and release of doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) on MENs were investigated using UV-vis and fluorescence spectrophotometry under alternating low-frequency magnetic fields. Plasma treatment enabled drug-loading control by changing the particles' roughness as physical adsorption and creating functional groups for chemical absorption. This led to reduced metabolic activity and cell adherences associated with elevated expression of pro-apoptotic genes (BCL-2, caspase 3) in 4T1 breast cancer cells in vitro exposed to alternating current magnetic field (ACMF) compared to MENs-DOX without field exposure. ACMF-potentiated anticancer effects of MENs were validated in vivo in tumor-bearing Balb/C mice. Altogether, our results suggest potentiated drug loading of MENs showing superior anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo when combined with ACMF.

Recent advances in zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) based nanostructures for magnetic hyperthermia applications

Spinel ferrite-based magnetic nanomaterials have been investigated for numerous biomedical applications, including targeted drug delivery, magnetic hyperthermia therapy (MHT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and biosensors, among others. Recent studies have found that zinc ferrite-based nanomaterials are favorable candidates for cancer theranostics, particularly for magnetic hyperthermia applications. Zinc ferrite exhibits excellent biocompatibility, minimal toxicity, and more importantly, exciting magnetic properties. In addition, these materials demonstrate a Curie temperature much lower than other transition metal ferrites. By regulating synthesis protocols and/or introducing suitable dopants, the Curie temperature of zinc ferrite-based nanosystems can be tailored to the MHT therapeutic window, i.e., 43-46 °C, a range which is highly beneficial for clinical hyperthermia applications. Furthermore, zinc ferrite-based nanostructures have been extensively used in successful pre-clinical trials on mice models focusing on the synergistic killing of cancer cells involving magnetic hyperthermia and chemotherapy. This review provides a systematic and comprehensive understanding of the recent developments of zinc ferrite-based nanomaterials, including doped particles, shape-modified structures, and composites for magnetic hyperthermia applications. In addition, future research prospects involving pure ZnFe2O4 and its derivative nanostructures have also been proposed.

Optimization of cobalt ferrite magnetic nanoparticle as a theranostic agent: MRI and hyperthermia

OBJECTIVE

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are considered a theranostic agent in MR imaging, playing an effective role in inducing magnetic hyperthermia. Since, high-performance magnetic theranostic agents are characterized by superparamagnetic behavior and high anisotropy, in this study, cobalt ferrite MNPs were optimized and investigated as a theranostic agent.

METHODS

CoFe2O4@Au@dextran particles were synthesized and characterized by DLS, HRTEM, SEM, XRD, FTIR, and VSM methods. After cytotoxicity evaluation, MR imaging parameters (r1, r2 and r2 / r1) were calculated for these nanostructures. Afterward, magnetic hyperthermia at the frequency of 425 kHz was applied to calculate specific loss power (SLP).

RESULTS

Formation of CoFe2O4@Au@dextran was confirmed by UV-Visible spectrophotometry. On the basis of the relaxometric and hyperthermia induction findings of nanostructures in all stages of synthesis, the CoFe2O4@Au@dextran could produce the highest parameters of r2 and r2/r1 and SLP with values ​​of 389.7, 51.2 mM-1 s-1, and 2449 W/g, respectively.

CONCLUSION

The formation of multi-core MNPs by dextran coating is expected to improve the magnetic properties of the nanostructure, leading to optimization of theranostic parameters, so that CoFe2O4@Au@dextran NPs can create contrast-enhanced images more than three times the clinical use and require less contrast agent, reducing side effects. Accordingly, CoFe2O4@Au@dextran can be introduced as a suitable theranostic nanostructure with optimal efficiency.

Promising photocatalytic and antimicrobial activity of novel capsaicin coated cobalt ferrite nanocatalyst

In this study, CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles were prepared by the co-precipitation method then surface modified with Capsaicin (Capsicum annuum ssp.). The virgin CoFe₂O₄ NPs and Capsaicin-coated CoFe₂O₄ NPs (CPCF NPs) were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, and TEM. The antimicrobial potential and photocatalytic degradation efficiencies of the prepared samples via Fuchsine basic (FB) were investigated. The results revealed that CoFe₂O₄ NPs have spherical shapes and their diameter varied from 18.0 to 30.0 nm with an average particle size of 25.0 nm. Antimicrobial activity was tested on Gram-positive (S. aureusATCC 52923) and Gram-negative (E. coli ATCC 52922) by disk diffusion and broth dilution methods to determine the zone of inhibition (ZOI) and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), respectively. UV-assisted photocatalytic degradation of FB was examined. Various parameters affecting the photocatalytic efficiency such as pH, initial concentration of FB, and dose of nanocatalyst were studied. The in-vitro ZOI and MIC results verified that CPCF NPs were more active upon Gram-Positive S. aureus ATCC 52923 (23.0 mm ZOI and 0.625 μg/ml MIC) than Gram-Negative E. coli ATCC 52922 (17.0 mm ZOI and 1.250 μg/ml MIC). Results obtained from the photocatalytic activity indicated that the maximum FB removal achieving 94.6% in equilibrium was observed using 20.0 mg of CPCF NPS at pH 9.0. The synthesized CPCF NPs were effective in the removal of FB and also as potent antimicrobial agent against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria with potential medical and environmental applications.

Core-shell micro/nanocapsules: from encapsulation to applications

Encapsulation is the way to wrap or coat one substance as a core inside another tiny substance known as a shell at micro and nano scale for protecting the active ingredients from the exterior environment. A lot of active substances, such as flavours, enzymes, drugs, pesticides, vitamins, in addition to catalysts being effectively encapsulated within capsules consisting of different natural as well as synthetic polymers comprising poly(methacrylate), poly(ethylene glycol), cellulose, poly(lactide), poly(styrene), gelatine, poly(lactide-co-glycolide)s, and acacia. The developed capsules release the enclosed substance conveniently and in time through numerous mechanisms, reliant on the ultimate use of final products. Such technology is important for several fields counting food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, agriculture, and textile industries. The present review focuses on the most important and high-efficiency methods for manufacturing micro/nanocapsules and their several applications in our life.

Self-regulated cobalt zinc ferrite system as a potential nanoplatform for the synergistic effect of hyperthermia-chemo agent for cancer therapy

Magnetic hyperthermia (MH) has been studied for almost seventy-five years, but its efficacy in clinical applications is still fiercely contested. Despite this, few magnetic nanosystems are approved for clinical usage due to their strong affinity as drug carriers. The most important condition for hyperthermia applications for successful cancer therapy is magnetic nanoparticles with a controlled heating pattern (42-46 °C) for a prolonged timeframe. In the current study, cobalt-zinc nanoferrites (MNPs) having a Curie temperature of 46 ℃ with a tunable heating profile was loaded with Doxorubicin (DOX) through a surface conjugation technique (DOX-Cs-MNPs), and characterized by using multiple techniques. The magnetic hyterises (M-H) curves revealed the occurrence of superparamagnetism in the MNPs with extremely low coercivity; further, the DOX-loaded nanoparticles exhibited enhanced saturation magnetization. More importantly, the MNPs showed that they could maintain a therapeutic temperature for an indefinite amount of time. High drug loading affinity (86 %) was observed on MNPs with pH and temperature-controlled release. Under in vitro conditions, the biocompatible DOX-Cs-MNPs caused substantial apoptosis in MCF-7 cells (72 %) with overall cell death of < 95 %. The distinctive MNPs thus have the potential to be used in clinical applications.

Improvement of Hyperthermia Properties of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles by Surface Coating

Magnetic hyperthermia is an oncological therapy that exploits magnetic nanoparticles activated by radiofrequency magnetic fields to produce a controlled temperature increase in a diseased tissue. The specific loss power (SLP) of magnetic nanoparticles or the capability to release heat can be improved using surface treatments, which can reduce agglomeration effects, thus impacting on local magnetostatic interactions. In this work, Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles are synthesized via a coprecipitation reaction and fully characterized in terms of structural, morphological, dimensional, magnetic, and hyperthermia properties (under the Hergt-Dutz limit). Different types of surface coatings are tested, comparing their impact on the heating efficacy and colloidal stability, resulting that sodium citrate leads to a doubling of the SLP with a substantial improvement in dispersion and stability in solution over time; an SLP value of around 170 W/g is obtained in this case for a 100 kHz and 48 kA/m magnetic field.

Preparation of a 3D printable high-performance GelMA hydrogel loading with magnetic cobalt ferrite nanoparticles

Osteosarcoma remains a worldwide concern due to the poor effectiveness of available therapies in the clinic. Therefore, it is necessary to find a safe and effective therapy to realize the complete resection of osteosarcoma and reconstruction of the bone defect. Magnetic hyperthermia based on magnetic nanoparticles can kill tumor cells by raising the temperature without causing the side effects of conventional cancer treatments. This research aims to design a high-performance magnetic hydrogel composed of gelatin methacrylate and highly magnetic cobalt ferrite (CFO) nanoparticles for osteosarcoma treatment. Specifically, CFO is surface functionalized with methacrylate groups (MeCFO). The surface modified CFO has good biocompatibility and stable solution dispersion ability. Afterward, MeCFO nanoparticles are incorporated into GelMA to fabricate a three-dimensional (3D) printable MeCFO/GelMA magnetic hydrogel and then photocross-linked by UV radiation. MeCFO/GelMA hydrogel has high porosity and swelling ability, indicating that the hydrogel possesses more space and good hydrophily for cell survival. The rheological results showed that the hydrogel has shear thinning property, which is suitable as a bioprinting ink to produce desired structures by a 3D printer. Furthermore, 50 μg/mL MeCFO not only decreases the cell activity of osteosarcoma cells but also promotes the osteogenic differentiation of mBMSCs. The results of the CCK-8 assay and live/dead staining showed that MeCFO/GelMA hydrogel had good cytocompatibility. These results indicated that MeCFO/GelMA hydrogel with potential antitumor and bone reconstruction functions is a promising therapeutic strategy after osteosarcoma resection.

QCM-Based MgFe2O4@CaAlg Nanocomposite as a Fast Response Nanosensor for Real-Time Detection of Methylene Blue Dye

Methylene blue (MB) dye is a common colorant used in numerous industries, particularly the textile industry. When methylene blue is discharged into water bodies without being properly treated, it may seriously damage aquatic and human life. As a result, a variety of methods have been established to remove dyes from aqueous systems. Thanks to their distinguishing features e.g., rapid responsiveness, cost-effectiveness, potential selectivity, portability, and simplicity, the electrochemical methods provided promising techniques. Considering these aspects, a novel quartz crystal microbalance nanosensors based on green synthesized magnesium ferrite nanoparticles (QCM-Based MgFe₂O₄ NPs) and magnesium ferrite nanoparticles coated alginate hydrogel nanocomposite (QCM-Based MgFe₂O₄@CaAlg NCs) were designed for real-time detection of high concentrations of MB dye in the aqueous streams at different temperatures. The characterization results of MgFe₂O₄ NPs and MgFe₂O₄@CaAlg NCs showed that the MgFe₂O₄ NPs have synthesized in good crystallinity, spherical shape, and successfully coated by the alginate hydrogel. The performance of the designed QCM-Based MgFe₂O₄ NPs and MgFe₂O₄@CaAlg NCs nanosensors were examined by the QCM technique, where the developed nanosensors showed great potential for dealing with continuous feed, very small volumes, high concentrations of MB, and providing an instantaneous response. In addition, the alginate coating offered more significant attributes to MgFe₂O₄ NPs and enhanced the sensor work toward MB monitoring. The sensitivity of designed nanosensors was evaluated at different MB concentrations (100 mg/L, 400 mg/L, and 800 mg/L), and temperatures (25 °C, 35 °C, and 45 °C). Where a real-time detection of 400 mg/L MB was achieved using the developed sensing platforms at different temperatures within an effective time of about 5 min. The results revealed that increasing the temperature from 25 °C to 45 °C has improved the detection of MB using the MgFe₂O₄@CaAlg NCs nanosensor and the MgFe₂O₄@CaAlg NCs nanosensor exhibited high sensitivity for different MB concentrations with more efficiency than the MgFe₂O₄ NPs nanosensor.

Biosynthesis and Analytical Characterization of Iron Oxide Nanobiocomposite for In-Depth Adsorption Strategy for the Removal of Toxic Metals from Drinking Water

The biosynthesis of the iron oxide nanoparticles was done using Ixoro coccinea leaf extract, followed by the fabrication of iron oxide nanobiocomposites (I-Fe3O4-NBC) using chitosan biopolymer. Furthermore, the synthesized I-Fe3O4-NPs and I-Fe3O4-NBC were characterized, and I-Fe3O4-NBC was applied to remove toxic metals (TMs: Cd, Ni, and Pb) from water. The characterization study confirmed that the nanostructure, porous, rough, crystalline structure, and different functional groups of chitosan and I-Fe3O4-NPs in I-Fe3O4-NBCs showed their feasibility for the application as excellent adsorbents for quantitative removal of TMs. The batch mode strategy as feasibility testing was done to optimize different adsorption parameters (pH, concentrations of TMs, dose of I-Fe3O4-NBC, contact time, and temperature) for maximum removal of TMs from water by Fe3O4-NBC. The maximum adsorption capacities using nanocomposites for Cd, Ni, and Pb were 66.0, 60.0, and 66.4 mg g-1, respectively. The adsorption process follows the Freundlich isotherm model by I-Fe3O4-NBC to remove Cd and Ni, while the Pb may be adsorption followed by multilayer surface coverage. The proposed adsorption process was best fitted to follow pseudo-second-order kinetics and showed an exothermic, favorable, and spontaneous nature. In addition, the I-Fe3O4-NBC was applied to adsorption TMs from surface water (%recovery > 95%). Thus, it can be concluded that the proposed nanocomposite is most efficient in removing TMs from drinking water up to recommended permissible limit.

Effect of TiO2 Additives on the Stabilization of h-YbFeO3 and Promotion of Photo-Fenton Activity of o-YbFeO3/h-YbFeO3/r-TiO2 Nanocomposites

Nanostructured hexagonal rare-earth orthoferrites (h-RfeO₃, R = Sc, Y, Tb-Lu) are well known as a highly effective base for visible-light-driven heterojunction photocatalysts. However, their application is limited by metastability, leading to difficulties in synthesis due to the irreversible transformation to a stable orthorhombic structure. In this work, we report on a simple route to the stabilization of h-YbFeO₃ nanocrystals by the synthesis of multiphase nanocomposites with titania additives. The new I-type heterojunction nanocomposites of o-YbFeO₃/h-YbFeO₃/r-TiO₂ were obtained by the glycine-nitrate solution combustion method with subsequent heat treatment of the products. An increase in the mole fraction of the h-YbFeO₃ phase in nanocomposites was found with the titanium addition, indicating its stabilizing effect via limiting mass transfer over heat treatment. The complex physicochemical analysis shows multiple contacts of individual nanocrystals of o-YbFeO₃ (44.4-50.6 nm), h-YbFeO₃ (7.5-17.6 nm), and rutile r-TiO₂ (~5 nm), confirming the presence of the heterojunction structure in the obtained nanocomposite. The photocatalytic activity of h-YbFeO₃/o-YbFeO₃/r-TiO₂ nanocomposites was evaluated by the photo-Fenton degradation of the methyl violet under visible light (λ ≥ 400 nm). It was demonstrated that the addition of 5 mol.% of TiO₂ stabilizes h-YbFeO₃, which allowed us to achieve a 41.5 mol% fraction, followed by a three-time increase in the photodecomposition rate constant up to 0.0160 min^-1.

Optomagnetic nanofluids for controlled brain hyperthermia: a critical study

Optomagnetic nanofluids (OMNFs) are colloidal dispersions of nanoparticles (NPs) with combined magnetic and optical properties. They are especially appealing in biomedicine since they can be used as minimally invasive platforms for controlled hyperthermia treatment of otherwise difficultly accessible tumors such as intracranial ones. On the one hand, magnetic NPs act as heating mediators when subjected to alternating magnetic fields or light irradiation. On the other hand, suitably tailored luminescent NPs can provide a precise and remote thermal readout in real time. The combination of heating and thermometric properties allows, in principle, to precisely monitor the increase in the temperature of brain tumors up to the therapeutic level, without causing undesired collateral damage. In this work we demonstrate that this view is an oversimplification since it ignores the presence of relevant interactions between magnetic (γ-Fe₂O₃ nanoflowers) and luminescent nanoparticles (Ag₂S NPs) that result in a detrimental alteration of their physicochemical properties. The magnitude of such interactions depends on the interparticle distance and on the surface properties of nanoparticles. Experiments performed in mouse brains (phantoms and ex vivo) revealed that OMNFs cannot induce relevant heating under alternating magnetic fields and fail to provide reliable temperature reading. In contrast, we demonstrate that the use of luminescent nanofluids (containing only Ag₂S NPs acting as both photothermal agents and nanothermometers) stands out as a better alternative for thermally monitored hyperthermia treatment of brain tumors in small animal models.

Magnetic Iron Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Surface Enhancements, and Biological Challenges

This review focuses on the role of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), their physicochemical properties, their potential applications, and their association with the consequent toxicological effects in complex biologic systems. These MNPs have generated an accelerated development and research movement in the last two decades. They are solving a large portion of problems in several industries, including cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, water remediation, photoelectronics, and information storage, to name a few. As a result, more MNPs are put into contact with biological organisms, including humans, via interacting with their cellular structures. This situation will require a deeper understanding of these particles’ full impact in interacting with complex biological systems, and even though extensive studies have been carried out on different biological systems discussing toxicology aspects of MNP systems used in biomedical applications, they give mixed and inconclusive results. Chemical agencies, such as the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemical substances (REACH) legislation for registration, evaluation, and authorization of substances and materials from the European Chemical Agency (ECHA), have held meetings to discuss the issue. However, nanomaterials (NMs) are being categorized by composition alone, ignoring the physicochemical properties and possible risks that their size, stability, crystallinity, and morphology could bring to health. Although several initiatives are being discussed around the world for the correct management and disposal of these materials, thanks to the extensive work of researchers everywhere addressing the issue of related biological impacts and concerns, and a new nanoethics and nanosafety branch to help clarify and bring together information about the impact of nanoparticles, more questions than answers have arisen regarding the behavior of MNPs with a wide range of effects in the same tissue. The generation of a consolidative framework of these biological behaviors is necessary to allow future applications to be manageable.

Magnetic nanocomposites for biomedical applications

Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine have solved numerous problems related to the repair and regeneration of damaged organs and tissues arising from aging, illnesses, and injuries. Nanotechnology has further aided tissue regeneration science and has provided outstanding opportunities to help disease diagnosis as well as treat damaged tissues. Based on the most recent findings, magnetic nanostructures (MNSs), in particular, have emerged as promising materials for detecting, directing, and supporting tissue regeneration. There have been many reports concerning the role of these nano-building blocks in the regeneration of both soft and hard tissues, but the subject has not been extensively reviewed. Here, we review, classify, and discuss various synthesis strategies for novel MNSs used in medicine. Advanced applications of magnetic nanocomposites (MG-NCs), specifically magnetic nanostructures, are further systematically reviewed. In addition, the scientific and technical aspects of MG-NC used in medicine are discussed considering the requirements for the field. In summary, this review highlights the numerous opportunities and challenges associated with the use of MG-NCs as smart nanocomposites (NCs) in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

The potential of surface nano-engineering in characteristics of cobalt-based nanoparticles and biointerface interaction with prokaryotic and human cells

Cobalt-based nanoparticles (CBNPs) have recently received great attention in biomedical studies; however, the possible biotoxicity of these nanoparticles (NPs) has remained a foremost concern that should be addressed. As surface functionalization is one of the helpful proposed solutions, we aimed to apply Lipoamino acids (LAAs) as a coating agent to improve biocompatibility. To this purpose, cobalt oxide, cobalt ferrite, and iron oxide nanoparticles (IONs) were synthesized with and without 2-amino-hexadecanoic acid coating to assess the impacts of LAA coating on characteristics and biocompatibility of CBNPs in human cells and compare with IONs, a widely used magnetic NPs in biomedicine. Antibacterial activities of NPs were evaluated against four Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria species to assess their biointerface interaction with prokaryotic cells. In addition, the antibacterial activities of synthesized NPs were compared to silver NPs, one of the widely used antimicrobial NPs and standard antibiotics (ampicillin). The structural characteristics properties of NPs were analyzed using TEM, FE-SEM, EDS, FTIR, XRD, and VSM. These NPs exhibited sphere-like to polygon-like morphology with desirable mean size. CBNPs displayed dose-dependent cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activities against human cell lines and all tested microbial species, as well as more cytotoxicity and bacterial inhibition compared to IONs. Besides, the results revealed that LAA coating could significantly improve the biocompatibility and antibacterial activity of NPs while impacting magnetic properties. To sum up, it seems that surface functionalization could provide more potent tools for bioapplications with improving biocompatibility and bacterial inhibition of CBNPs, though; further studies are needed in this regard.

Advances in the Synthesis and Application of Magnetic Ferrite Nanoparticles for Cancer Therapy

Cancer is among the leading causes of mortality globally, with nearly 10 million deaths in 2020. The emergence of nanotechnology has revolutionised treatment strategies in medicine, with rigorous research focusing on designing multi-functional nanoparticles (NPs) that are biocompatible, non-toxic, and target-specific. Iron-oxide-based NPs have been successfully employed in theranostics as imaging agents and drug delivery vehicles for anti-cancer treatment. Substituted iron-oxides (MFe2O4) have emerged as potential nanocarriers due to their unique and attractive properties such as size and magnetic tunability, ease of synthesis, and manipulatable properties. Current research explores their potential use in hyperthermia and as drug delivery vehicles for cancer therapy. Significantly, there are considerations in applying iron-oxide-based NPs for enhanced biocompatibility, biodegradability, colloidal stability, lowered toxicity, and more efficient and targeted delivery. This review covers iron-oxide-based NPs in cancer therapy, focusing on recent research advances in the use of ferrites. Methods for the synthesis of cubic spinel ferrites and the requirements for their considerations as potential nanocarriers in cancer therapy are discussed. The review highlights surface modifications, where functionalisation with specific biomolecules can deliver better efficiency. Finally, the challenges and solutions for the use of ferrites in cancer therapy are summarised.

Highly Optimized Iron Oxide Embedded Poly(Lactic Acid) Nanocomposites for Effective Magnetic Hyperthermia and Biosecurity

Introduction

Iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (IONPs) have attracted considerable attention for various biomedical applications owing to their ease of synthesis, strong magnetic properties, and biocompatibility. In particular, IONPs can generate heat under an alternating magnetic field, the effects of which have been extensively studied for magnetic hyperthermia therapy. However, the development of IONPs with high heating efficiency, biocompatibility, and colloidal stability in physiological environments is still required for their safe and effective application in biomedical fields.

Methods

We synthesized magnetic IONP/polymer nanocomposites (MNCs) by embedding IONPs in a poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA) matrix via nanoemulsion. The IONP contents (Fe: 9–22 [w/w]%) in MNCs were varied to investigate their effects on the magnetic and hyperthermia performances based on their optimal interparticle interactions. Further, we explored the stability, cytocompatibility, biodistribution, and in vivo tissue compatibility of the MNCs.

Results

The MNCs showed enhanced heating efficiency with over two-fold increase compared to nonembedded bare IONPs. The relationship between the IONP content and heating performance in MNCs was nonmonotonous. The highest heating performance was obtained from MNC2, which contain 13% Fe (w/w), implying that interparticle interactions in MNCs can be optimized to achieve high heating performance. In addition, the MNCs exhibited good colloidal stability under physiological conditions and maintained their heating efficiency during 48 h of incubation in cell culture medium. Both in vitro and in vivo studies revealed excellent biocompatibility of the MNC.

Conclusion

Our nanocomposites, comprising biocompatible IONPs and PLA, display improved heating efficiency, good colloidal stability, and cytocompatibility, and thus will be beneficial for diverse biomedical applications, including magnetic hyperthermia for cancer treatment.

Magnetic nanoparticles and clusters for magnetic hyperthermia: optimizing their heat performance and developing combinatorial therapies to tackle cancer

Magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) is a therapeutic modality for the treatment of solid tumors that has now accumulated more than 30 years of experience. In the ongoing MHT clinical trials for the treatment of brain and prostate tumors, iron oxide nanoparticles are employed as intra-tumoral MHT agents under a patient-safe 100 kHz alternating magnetic field (AMF) applicator. Although iron oxide nanoparticles are currently approved by FDA for imaging purposes and for the treatment of anemia, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) designed for the efficient treatment of MHT must respond to specific physical-chemical properties in terms of magneto-energy conversion, heat dose production, surface chemistry and aggregation state. Accordingly, in the past few decades, these requirements have boosted the development of a new generation of MNPs specifically aimed for MHT. In this review, we present an overview on MNPs and their assemblies produced via different synthetic routes, focusing on which MNP features have allowed unprecedented heating efficiency levels to be achieved in MHT and highlighting nanoplatforms that prevent magnetic heat loss in the intracellular environment. Moreover, we review the advances on MNP-based nanoplatforms that embrace the concept of multimodal therapy, which aims to combine MHT with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, photodynamic or phototherapy. Next, for a better control of the therapeutic temperature at the tumor, we focus on the studies that have optimized MNPs to maintain gold-standard MHT performance and are also tackling MNP imaging with the aim to quantitatively assess the amount of nanoparticles accumulated at the tumor site and regulate the MHT field conditions. To conclude, future perspectives with guidance on how to advance MHT therapy will be provided.

Effect of Graphene Concentration on the Electrochemical Properties of Cobalt Ferrite Nanocomposite Materials

A two-step process was applied to synthesize the cobalt ferrite-graphene composite materials in a one-pot hydrothermal reaction process. Graphene Oxide (GO) was synthesized by a modified Hummer's method. The synthesized composite materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The XRD and FTIR results were in good agreement with the TGA/DTG observations. SEM and TEM disclosed the spherical shape of the nanoparticles in 4-10 nm. The optimized CoFe2O4-G (1-5 wt.%) composite materials samples were tried for their conductivity, supercapacity, and corrosion properties. The CV results demonstrated a distinctive behavior of the supercapacitor, while the modified CoFe2O4-G (5 wt.%) electrode demonstrated a strong reduction in the Rct value (~94 Ω). The highest corrosion current density valves and corrosion rates were attained in the CoFe2O4-G (5 wt.%) composite materials as 5.53 and 0.20, respectively. The high conductivity of graphene that initiated the poor corrosion rate of the CoFe2O4-graphene composite materials could be accredited to the high conductivity and reactivity.

Atomic Resolution Electron Microscopy: A Key Tool for Understanding the Activity of Nano-Oxides for Biomedical Applications

Transition metal oxides constitute one of the most fruitful sources of materials with continuously increasing potential applications prompted by the expectations derived from the reduction of the particle size. The recent advances in transmission electron microscopy, because of the development of lenses, have made it possible to reach atomic resolution, which can provide answers regarding the performance of the transition metal nano-oxides. This critical information is related not only to the ability to study their microstructural characteristics but also their local composition and the oxidation state of the transition metal. Exploring these features is a well-known task in nano-oxides for energy and electronic technologies, but they are not so commonly used for elucidating the activity of these oxides for biomedical applications. Nevertheless, the identification at the atomic level of a certain dopant or the unambiguous determination of the oxidation state of a transition metal in a nano-oxide can be important questions to be answered in a certain biomedical application. In this work, we provide several examples in transition metal nano-oxides to show how atomic-resolution electron microscopy can be a key tool for its understanding.

The untapped potential of magnetic nanoparticles for forensic investigations: A comprehensive review

With a growing interest in precise and sensitive diagnosis for criminal investigations, nanoparticles (NPs) have intrigued scientific minds working in the field of forensic science due to their exceptional properties. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have emerged as a powerful tool for improving forensic analysis due to their super magnetic behavior combined with smaller dimensions. MNP-based applications can benefit criminologists to solve criminal mysteries with greater precision and pace. This review highlights the different types of MNP-based applications and their developmental and implicational aspects of forensic science. It also renders insight into the future prospects of a splendid blend of nanotechnology and forensic science, leading to a better scientific analysis.

Advanced biomedical applications of iron oxide nanostructures based ferrofluids

Ferrofluids or magnetic nanofluids are highly stable colloidal suspensions of magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) dispersed into various base fluids. These stable ferrofluids possess high thermal conductivity, improved thermo-physical properties, higher colloidal stability, good magnetic properties, and biocompatibility, which are the primary driving forces behind their excellent performance, and thus enable them to be used for a wide range of practical applications. The most studied and advanced ferrofluids are based on iron oxide nanostructures especially NPs, because of their easy and large-scale synthesis at low costs. Although in the last decade, several review articles are available on ferrofluids but mainly focused on preparations, properties, and a specific application. Hence, a collective and comprehensive review article on the recent progress of iron oxide nanostructures based ferrofluids for advanced biomedical applications is undeniably required. In this review, the state of the art of biomedical applications is presented and critically analyzed with a special focus on hyperthermia, drug delivery/nanomedicine, magnetic resonance imaging, and magnetic separation of cells. This review article provides up-to-date information related to the technological advancements and emerging trends in iron oxide nanostructures based ferrofluids research focused on advanced biomedical applications. Finally, conclusions and outlook of iron oxide nanostructures based ferrofluids research for biomedical applications are presented.

Magneto-fluorescent nanocomposites: experimental and theoretical linkage for the optimization of magnetic hyperthermia

Magneto-fluorescent nanocomposites have been recognized as an emerging class of materials displaying great potential for improved magnetic hyperthermia assisted by optical imaging. In this study, we have designed a series of hybrid composites that consist of zinc doped Zn_xFe_3-xO₄ ferrites functionalized by polyethylene-glycol (PEG8000) and an orange-emitting platinum complex [Pt(phen)Cl₂]. Experimental and theoretical studies on the optimization of their magnetically-mediated heating properties were conducted. PEG was assembled around particles' surface by two different approaches; in situ and post-PEGylation. PEGylation ensured the optimal distance between the magnetic core and Pt(ii)-complex to maintain significant luminescence in the composite. The successful inclusion of the complex to the organic matrix was confirmed by a variety of spectroscopic techniques. A theoretical model was developed, based on linear response theory, in order to examine the composites' power losses dependence on their properties. Within this model, inter-particle interactions were quantified by inserting a mean dipolar energy term in the estimation of Néel relaxation time, and consequently, the size and concentration that maximize power loss were derived (20 nm and 4 mg mL^-1). Moreover, a decrease in the anisotropy of nanoparticles resulted in an increase in specific loss power values. Theoretical estimations are validated by experimental data when heating aqueous dispersions of composites in 24 kA m^-1, 765 kHz AMF for various values of concentration and size. Magnetic hyperthermia results showed that the theory-predicted values of optimum concentration and size delivered the maximum-specific loss power which was found equal to 545 W g^-1. By the present approach, a quantitative link between the particles' dipolar interactions and their heating properties is established, while opening new perspectives to nanotheranostic applications.

The Synthesis Methodology of PEGylated Fe3O4@Ag Nanoparticles Supported by Their Physicochemical Evaluation

Many investigations are currently being performed to develop the effective synthesis methodology of magnetic nanoparticles with appropriately functionalized surfaces. Here, the novelty of the presented work involves the preparation of nano-sized PEGylated Fe3O4@Ag particles, i.e., the main purpose was the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles with a functionalized surface. Firstly, Fe3O4 particles were prepared via the Massart process. Next, Ag+ reduction was conducted in the presence of Fe3O4 particles to form a nanosilver coating. The reaction was performed with arabic gum as a stabilizing agent. Sound energy-using sonication was applied to disintegrate the particles' agglomerates. Next, the PEGylation process aimed at the formation of a coating on the particles' surface using PEG (poly(ethylene glycol)) has been performed. It was proved that the arabic gum limited the agglomeration of nanoparticles, which was probably caused by the steric effect caused by the branched compounds from the stabilizer that adsorbed on the surface of nanoparticles. This effect was also enhanced by the electrostatic repulsions. The process of sonication caused the disintegration of aggregates. Formation of iron (II, III) oxide with a cubic structure was proved by diffraction peaks. Formation of a nanosilver coating on the Fe3O4 nanoparticles was confirmed by diffraction peaks with 2θ values 38.15° and 44.35°. PEG coating on the particles' surface was proven via FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) analysis. Obtained PEG-nanosilver-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles may find applications as carriers for targeted drug delivery using an external magnetic field.

Superparamagnetic cobalt ferrite nanoparticles as T2 contrast agent in MRI: in vitro study

Superparamagnetic cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (CoFe₂O₄) possess favourite advantages for theranostic applications. Most of previous studies reported that CoFe₂O₄ magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are suitable candidates for induction of hyperthermia and transfection agents for drug delivery. The present study synthesized and investigated the potential use of CoFe₂O₄ as a contrast agent in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) by using a conventional MRI system. The CoFe₂O₄ were synthesized using co-precipitation method and characterized by TEM, XRD, FTIR, EDX and VSM techniques. Relaxivities r₁ and r₂ of CoFe₂O₄ were then calculated using a 1.5 Tesla clinical magnetic field. The cytotoxicity of CoFe₂O₄ was evaluated by the MTT assay. Finally, the optimal concentrations of MNPs for MRI uses were calculated through the analysis of T₂ weighted imaging cell phantoms. The superparamagnetic CoFe2O4 NPs with an average stable size of 10.45 nm were synthesized. Relaxivity r₁,₂ calculations resulted in suitable r₂ and r₂/ r₁ with values of 58.6 and 51 that confirmed the size dependency on relaxivity values. The optimal concentration of MNPs for MR image acquisition was calculated as 0.154 mM. Conclusion: CoFe₂O₄ synthesized in this study could be considered as a suitable T₂ weighted contrast agent because of its high r₂/r₁ value.

Role of Magnetite Nanoparticles Size and Concentration on Hyperthermia under Various Field Frequencies and Strengths

Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were synthesized using the chemical coprecipitation method. Several nanoparticle samples were synthesized by varying the concentration of iron salt precursors in the solution for the synthesis. Two batches of nanoparticles with average sizes of 10.2 nm and 12.2 nm with nearly similar particle-size distributions were investigated. The average particle sizes were determined from the XRD patterns and TEM images. For each batch, several samples with different particle concentrations were prepared. Morphological analysis of the samples was performed using TEM. The phase and structure of the particles of each batch were studied using XRD, selected area electron diffraction (SAED), Raman and XPS spectroscopy. Magnetic hysteresis loops were obtained using a Lakeshore vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) at room temperature. In the two batches, the particles were found to be of the same pure crystalline phase of magnetite. The effects of particle size, size distribution, and concentration on the magnetic properties and magneto thermic efficiency were investigated. Heating profiles, under an alternating magnetic field, were obtained for the two batches of nanoparticles with frequencies 765.85, 634.45, 491.10, 390.25, 349.20, 306.65, and 166.00 kHz and field amplitudes of 100, 200, 250, 300 and 350 G. The specific absorption rate (SAR) values for the particles of size 12.2 nm are higher than those for the particles of size 10.2 nm at all concentrations and field parameters. SAR decreases with the increase of particle concentration. SAR obtained for all the particle concentrations of the two batches increases almost linearly with the field frequency (at fixed field strength) and nonlinearly with the field amplitude (at fixed field frequency). SAR value obtained for magnetite nanoparticles with the highest magnetization is 145.84 W/g at 765.85 kHz and 350 G, whereas the SAR value of the particles with the least magnetization is 81.67 W/g at the same field and frequency.

Radiosensitizing effects of citrate-coated cobalt and nickel ferrite nanoparticles on breast cancer cells

Aim: Evaluation of the biocompatibility and radiosensitizer potential of citrate-coated cobalt (cit-CF) and nickel (cit-NF) ferrite nanoparticles (NPs). Materials & methods: Normal fibroblast and breast cancer cells were treated with different concentrations of citrate-coated ferrite NPs (cit-NPs) and irradiated with a cobalt-60 source at doses of 1 and 3 Gy. After 24 h, cell metabolism, morphology alterations and nanoparticle uptake were evaluated. Results: Cit-CF and cit-NF NPs showed no toxicity to normal cells up to 250 and 100 μg.ml^-1, respectively. Combination of cit-NP and ionizing radiation resulted in up to fivefold increase in the radiation therapeutic efficacy against breast cancer cells. Conclusion: Cit-CF and cit-NF NPs are suitable candidates for application as breast cancer cell radiosensitizers.

Recent Advances of Magnetic Nanomaterials in Bone Tissue Repair

The magnetic field has been proven to enhance bone tissue repair by affecting cell metabolic behavior. Magnetic nanoparticles are used as biomaterials due to their unique magnetic properties and good biocompatibility. Through endocytosis, entering the cell makes it easier to affect the physiological function of the cell. Once the magnetic particles are exposed to an external magnetic field, they will be rapidly magnetized. The magnetic particles and the magnetic field work together to enhance the effectiveness of their bone tissue repair treatment. This article reviews the common synthesis methods, the mechanism, and application of magnetic nanomaterials in the field of bone tissue repair.

Field-controlled magnetoelectric core-shell CoFe2O4@BaTiO3 nanoparticles as effective drug carriers and drug release in vitro

The targeted drug release at tumor cells while sparing normal cells is a huge challenge. Core-shell magnetoelectric (ME) nanoparticles have addressed this problem using shape-dependent magneto-electric attributes. The colloidally stable, core-shell cobalt ferrite@barium titanate (CFO@BTO) ME nanoparticles (NPs) used for in vitro study were synthesized using sonochemical method. The structural characteristics and core-shell morphology were analyzed by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) respectively. Further magnetic and exchange coupling between two phases of ME nanostructures were studied at room temperature. Colloidal stability was studied in different suspension solutions (Water, SBB, PBS, and DMEM) using dynamic light scattering. Subsequently, the synthesized nanoparticles were functionalized with anticancer drugs including doxorubicin and methotrexate up to 80% via (EDC) chemistry. In vitro cytotoxicity studies carried out on human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) and human malignant melanoma (HT144), cells validated the magneto-electric property of CFO@BTO nano-carriers in the presence of external magnetic field (5 mT), with significantly enhanced cytotoxicity when compared to free drugs and without field replicates. The resulted IC₅₀ values ranging from 5.3-7.3 μg/ml compared to 30.1-43.1 μg/ml in the absence of a magnetic field also confirmed the involved physical attributes of magnetoelectric nanostructures. The fluorescent microscopy results also indicated the increased apoptosis in magnetic field-assisted samples. Finally, hemolysis assay indicated the suitability of CFO@BTO nano-carriers for intravenous applications at IC₅₀ concentration.

Engineering Core-Shell Structures of Magnetic Ferrite Nanoparticles for High Hyperthermia Performance

Magnetic ferrite nanoparticles (MFNs) with high heating efficiency are highly desirable for hyperthermia applications. As conventional MFNs usually show low heating efficiency with a lower specific loss power (SLP), extensive efforts to enhance the SLP of MFNs have been made by varying the particle compositions, sizes, and structures. In this study, we attempted to increase the SLP values by creating core-shell structures of MFNs. Accordingly, first we synthesized three different types of core ferrite nanoparticle of magnetite (mag), cobalt ferrite (cf) and zinc cobalt ferrite (zcf). Secondly, we synthesized eight bi-magnetic core-shell structured MFNs; Fe₃O₄@CoFe₂O₄ (mag@cf₁, mag@cf₂), CoFe₂O₄@Fe₃O₄ (cf@mag₁, cf@mag₂), Fe₃O₄@ZnCoFe₂O₄ (mag@zcf₁, mag@zcf₂), and ZnCoFe₂O₄@Fe₃O₄ (zcf@mag₁, zcf@mag₂), using a modified controlled co-precipitation process. SLP values of the prepared core-shell MFNs were investigated with respect to their compositions and core/shell dimensions while varying the applied magnetic field strength. Hyperthermia properties of the prepared core-shell MFNs were further compared to commercial magnetic nanoparticles under the safe limits of magnetic field parameters (<5 × 10⁹ A/(m·s)). As a result, the highest SLP value (379.2 W/g_metal) was obtained for mag@zcf₁, with a magnetic field strength of 50 kA/m and frequency of 97 kHz. On the other hand, the lowest SLP value (1.7 W/g_metal) was obtained for cf@mag₁, with a magnetic field strength of 40 kA/m and frequency of 97 kHz. We also found that magnetic properties and thickness of the shell play critical roles in heating efficiency and hyperthermia performance. In conclusion, we successfully enhanced the SLP of MFNs by engineering their compositions and dimensions.
