Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the association between blood metal mixture and HUA risk. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed based on the populations from Kailuan cohort trial in China. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was utilized to detect the blood concentrations of iron (Fe), lead (Pb), calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), and manganese (Mn). Multivariate logistic regression (MLR) models and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression models were employed to assess the relationships. RESULTS There were 3706 participants included in this study, and 464 (12.52%) were with HUA. The mean level of uric acid was 485.60 μmol/L in the subjects with HUA, which was remarkably increased compared to those without HUA (293.10 μmol/L). The multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of HUA were 2.15 (1.40, 3.29) for Pb, 3.42 (2.24, 5.23) for Fe, 1.61 (1.15, 2.25) for Ca, 3.06 (2.04, 4.59) for Mg, and 1.69 (1.26, 2.28) for Zn by comparing the highest and lowest metal quartiles using the single-metal logistic regression model. Meanwhile, the WQS regression models demonstrated a positive association between metal mixtures and HUA risk, to which, Fe, Mg, Pb, and Zn were the major contributors. Pb, Fe, and Zn were still robust in multiple-metal models. Age, gender, weight, smoking, and drinking status could modify these relationships with significant interactions. CONCLUSIONS Co-exposure to Fe, Pb, Ca, Cu, Zn, Mg, Se, and Mn were related to increased HUA risk in Chinese adults, of with, Pb, Fe, and Zn appeared to have greater impacts. These relationships were more obvious in adults aged < 60 years, or women, or overweight, or non-smoking, or drinking with significant interactions. Key Points • Increased Fe, Pb, Mg, Ca, and Zn were related to increased HUA risk in dose-response fashion among Chinese adults. • The metal mixture dominated by Fe, Mg, Pb, and Zn was positively associated with HUA risk. Fe, Pb, and Zn were still robust in MM model. • Such association was stronger showed in adults aged < 60 years, or women, or overweight, or non-smoking, or drinking with significant interactions.

Abstract
Objective The study aimed to explore the risk factors for hyperuricemia (HUA) in the Naxi ethnic population residing in high-altitude areas of Yunnan, China, and assess the clinical value of the triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-c) ratio as a diagnostic marker. Methods In this cross-sectional study, clinical data were collected from the health checkup population in the People's Hospital of Yulong Naxi Autonomous County, Yunnan Province, from January 2021 to January 2023. Participants were divided into quartiles based on the TG/HDL-c ratio (Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4) for group analysis using chi-square tests, t-tests, and rank sum tests. Logistic regression analysis and linear regression models were employed to further investigate the correlation between the prevalence of hyperuricemia and TG/HDL-c ratio in this high-altitude Naxi population. Results A total of 714 participants from the health checkup population were included in the study, of whom 61.5% were male participants and 38.5% were female participants, and the average age was 41.21 ± 11.69 years. The mean uric acid level was 388.51 ± 99.24. After correcting for confounding factors, TG/HDL-c, serum creatinine (Scr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), red blood cells (RBCs), and hemoglobin (Hb) showed a positive correlation with blood uric acid. Further analysis involved categorizing the TG/HDL-c ratio from a continuous variable to a categorical variable using quartiles. The fully adjusted model showed results that were consistent with the trend observed in the continuous variable analysis when considering the TG/HDL-c ratio as a categorical variable. In addition, in all unadjusted and adjusted models, the serum uric acid (SUA) levels in the high TG/HDL-c ratio group were significantly higher than those in the low TG/HDL-c ratio group (trend p < 0.001). Further linear relationship analysis indicated that after adjusting for covariates, there was an approximate linear relationship between the TG/HDL-c and SUA levels, with a coefficient (β) of 5.421. Conclusion The prevalence of hyperuricemia is greater in high-altitude areas of Yunnan, showing a nearly linear positive correlation with the TG/HDL-c ratio. Monitoring TG/HDL-c levels may benefit patients with hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Objective The current study aimed to assess the relationships between oxidative balance score (OBS) and OBS subclasses (dietary and lifestyle OBS) with risks of hyperuricemia (HUA) and gout among American adults. Methods Participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2018 were initially recruited and then the final sample was restricted to adults without missing values about serum uric acid, gout, OBS, and covariates. Rao-Scott adjusted chi-square test and analysis of variance were utilized to compare the baseline characteristics in adults of different quartiles of OBS, while the weighted stepped logistic regression models were used to explore the associations of overall, dietary, and lifestyle OBS with the risks of HUA and gout. Weighted restricted cubic spline analyses were conducted to explore the nonlinear dose-response associations. Results The final sample consisted of 22,705 participants aged 20 years and older, which was representative of approximately 197.3 million non-institutionalized American adults. HUA and gout prevalence decreased with OBS quartiles. Compared with adults in the first quartile of OBS, those in the second (OR: 0.85, 95% CI: 0.72-0.99), third (OR: 0.71, 95% CI: 0.58-0.85), and fourth (OR: 0.48, 95% CI: 0.38-0.61) quartiles of OBS had reduced risks of hyperuricemia. Similarly, adults in the second (OR: 0.70, 95% CI: 0.51-0.97) quartile of OBS was associated with lower gout risk in comparison to adults in the lowest quartile. Regarding OBS subclasses, dietary and lifestyle OBS were both negatively correlated with the risk of HUA, and only higher lifestyle OBS was significantly associated with lower gout risk. Furthermore, the subgroup analyses and interaction effects also substantiated similar effects. Significant nonlinear dose-response relationships were observed between overall, dietary, and lifestyle OBS with HUA risk as well as that of lifestyle OBS with gout risk. Conclusion This study strongly suggests the significant negative associations of OBS with HUA and gout in American adults and provides a dietary and lifestyle guideline to reduce the risks.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to evaluate hair levels of toxic and essential trace elements and minerals in male and female patients with chronic gout. A total of 223 examinees aged from 27 to 82 years old including 116 healthy controls (64 women and 52 men) and 107 patients with gout (56 women and 51 men) were enrolled in the current cross-sectional study. Analysis of hair toxic and essential trace element and mineral content was performed using inductively-coupled plasma mass-spectrometry. The obtained data demonstrate that hair B, Fe, I, and Mo levels in gout patients were 67%, 8%, 46%, and 21% higher in comparison to the respective control values. Hair Cr and V content in patients was more than twofold higher than in the controls. Hair Mg and Zn levels were found to be 34% and 11% lower when compared to the respective control values. Hair toxic metal and metalloid content was also significantly affected in gout patients. Specifically, hair Al, As, and Pb levels were 24%, 43%, and 33% higher in gout patients than in healthy controls, respectively. Analysis of covariance demonstrated that sex also had a significant influence on hair trace element and mineral levels in gout patients. Specifically, gout-associated overaccumulation of hair trace elements including was more profound in male than in female patients. It is assumed that trace element dysregulation may contribute to gout development and progression, especially in men. However, further studies are required to elucidate this association and the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Abstract
Background Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is a novel indicator of the overall antioxidant/oxidant balance, providing a comprehensive reflection of the body's overall oxidative stress status, with higher OBS suggesting more substantial antioxidant exposures. We aimed to investigate the possible relationship between OBS with serum uric acid (SUA) and hyperuricemia. Methods Data utilized in this study were sourced from the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Participants under 18 years old, those with ≤16 complete data out of 20 OBS components, incomplete serum uric acid data, and missing covariates were excluded from the analysis. OBS was computed by evaluating 16 nutrients and 4 lifestyle factors, encompassing 5 pro-oxidants and 15 antioxidants, guided by a priori knowledge of their relationship with oxidative stress. Results A total of 1,5096 individuals were included in our analysis with 49.7% being male, and an average age of 49.05 ± 17.56 years. The mean OBS was 19.76 ± 7.17. Hyperuricemia was present in 19.28% of participants. Due to the right-skewed distribution of the OBS, a natural log transformation was applied to address this issue, and Quartiles of lnOBS 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 1.10-2.56 (N=3526), 2.64-2.94 (N=3748), 3.00-3.22 (N=4026), and 3.26-3.61 (N=3796), respectively. Multivariable logistic regression showed that higher lnOBS quantiles were correlated with lower serum uric acid levels. Compared with the lowest lnOBS quantile, participants in the highest lnOBS quantile had a significant serum uric acid decrease of 16.94 μmol/L for each unit increase in lnOBS (β=-16.94, 95% CI: -20.44, -13.45). Similar negative associations were observed in the second-highest (β=-8.07, 95% CI: -11.45, -4.69) and third-highest (β=-11.69, 95% CI: -15.05, -8.34) lnOBS quantiles. The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for hyperuricemia in Quartiles 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 1.00, 0.84 (95% CI: 0.75, 0.95), 0.78 (95% CI: 0.69, 0.88), and 0.62 (95% CI: 0.55, 0.71), respectively. Compared to Quartile 1, participants in Quartile 4 had a 38% lower prevalence of hyperuricemia. Subgroup analysis and interaction test showed that there was a significant dependence of sex between OBS and serum uric acid (p for interaction <0.05), but not hyperuricemia (p for interaction >0.05). Subgroup analysis stratified by age, BMI, hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia showed there is no significant dependence on these negative correlations (all p for interaction >0.05). Conclusions The serum uric acid levels and prevalence of hyperuricemia in US adults exhibited a negative association with OBS. By exploring this connection, our research aims to gain a better understanding of how oxidative balance affects the prevalence of hyperuricemia. This could provide valuable insights for developing preventive strategies and interventions for hyperuricemia. Additional large-scale prospective studies are required to explore the role of OBS in hyperuricemia further.

Abstract
The association between the exposure of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and serum uric acid (UA) levels remained uncertain. In this study, to investigate the combined effects of OCP mixtures on hyperuricemia, we analyzed serum OCPs and UA levels in adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2016). Four statistical models including weighted logistic regression, weighted quantile sum (WQS), quantile g-computation (QGC), and bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were used to assess the relationship between mixed chemical exposures and hyperuricemia. Subgroup analyses were conducted to explore potential modifiers. Among 6,529 participants, the prevalence of hyperuricemia was 21.15%. Logistic regression revealed a significant association between both hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and trans-nonachlor and hyperuricemia in the fifth quintile (OR: 1.54, 95% CI: 1.08-2.19; OR: 1.58, 95% CI: 1.05-2.39, respectively), utilizing the first quintile as a reference. WQS and QGC analyses showed significant overall effects of OCPs on hyperuricemia, with an OR of 1.25 (95% CI: 1.09-1.44) and 1.20 (95% CI: 1.06-1.37), respectively. BKMR indicated a positive trend between mixed OCPs and hyperuricemia, with HCB having the largest weight in all three mixture analyses. Subgroup analyses revealed that females, individuals aged 50 years and above, and those with a low income were more vulnerable to mixed OCP exposure. These results highlight the urgent need to protect vulnerable populations from OCPs and to properly evaluate the health effects of multiple exposures on hyperuricemia using mutual validation approaches.

BACKGROUND Limited data regarding the correlation between oxidative balance score (OBS) and hyperuricemia highlights the necessity for thorough investigations. This study aims to examine the link between OBS, which incorporates dietary and lifestyle factors, and the occurrence of hyperuricemia. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 13,636 participants from the 2007-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The oxidative balance score (OBS) was determined based on four lifestyle factors and sixteen dietary nutrients. We assessed the levels of serum uric acid (SUA) and the occurrence of hyperuricemia as outcomes. Weighted logistic regression and linear models were used for statistical analysis, using Restricted Cubic Splines (RCS) to examine potential nonlinear associations. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity assessments were performed to identify any variations and ensure the robustness of the findings. RESULTS Higher OBS was consistently correlated with decreased SUA levels and a reduced prevalence of hyperuricemia. RCS highlighted a significant negative nonlinear association, particularly in females. Subgroup analysis revealed gender-based differences and interactive correlation, providing additional insights regarding OBS and hyperuricemia relationship. CONCLUSION This study underscores a robust negative correlation between OBS and SUA levels as well as the incidence of hyperuricemia, emphasizing the importance of dietary and lifestyle factors. Incorporating RCS, subgroup analysis, and sensitivity assessments enhances the depth of our findings, providing valuable insights for further research.

Abstract
Xanthine oxidase (XO), a rate-limiting enzyme in uric acid production, is the pivotal therapeutic target for gout and hyperuricemia. In this study, 57 peptides from α-lactalbumin and β-lactoglobulin were obtained via virtual enzymatic hydrolysis, and 10 XO inhibitory peptides were virtually screened using molecular docking. Then toxicity, allergenicity, solubility, and isoelectric point of the obtained 10 novel peptides were evaluated by in silico tools. The XO activity of these synthetic peptides was tested using an in vitro assay by high-performance liquid chromatography. Their inhibitory mechanism was further explored by molecular docking. The results showed that 4 peptides GL, PM, AL, and AM exhibited higher inhibitory activity, and their half maximal inhibitory concentration in vitro was 10.20 ± 0.89, 23.82 ± 0.94, 34.49 ± 0.89, and 40.45 ± 0.92 mM, respectively. The peptides fitted well with XO through hydrogen bond, hydrophobic interaction, and van der Waals forces, and amino acid residues Glu802, Leu873, Arg880, and Pro1076 played an important role in this process. Overall, this study indicated 4 novel peptides GL, PM, AL, and AM from whey protein exhibited XO inhibitory activity, and they might be useful and safe XO inhibitors for hyperuricemia prevention and treatment.

Abstract
People with type 2 diabetes have a tenfold higher prevalence of hypomagnesemia, which is suggested to be caused by low dietary magnesium intake, medication use, and genetics. This study aims to identify the genetic loci that influence serum magnesium concentration in 3466 people with type 2 diabetes. The GWAS models were adjusted for age, sex, eGFR, and HbA1c. Associated traits were identified using publicly available data from GTEx consortium, a human kidney eQTL atlas, and the Open GWAS database. The GWAS identified a genome-wide significant locus in TAF3 (p = 2.9 × 10-9) in people with type 2 diabetes. In skeletal muscle, loci located in TAF3 demonstrate an eQTL link to ATP5F1C, a gene that is involved in the formation of Mg2+-ATP. Serum Mg2+ levels were associated with MUC1/TRIM46 (p = 2.9 × 10-7), SHROOM3 (p = 4.0 × 10-7), and SLC22A7 (p = 1.0 × 10-6) at nominal significance, which is in combination with the eQTL data suggesting that they are possible candidates for renal failure. Several genetic loci were in agreement with previous genomic studies which identified MUC1/TRIM46 (Pmeta = 6.9 × 10-29, PQ = 0.81) and SHROOM3 (Pmeta = 2.9 × 10-27, PQ = 0.04) to be associated with serum Mg2+ in the general population. In conclusion, serum magnesium concentrations are associated with genetic variability around the regions of TAF3, MUC1/TRIM46, SHROOM3, and SLC22A7 in type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
This study aimed to describe the prevalence of comorbid hypertension and hyperuricemia (HH) and detected the dietary factors for HH in Chinese adults aged 18 to 64 years. All of the data were collected from the China Nutrition and Health Surveillance 2015-2017, with a stratified, multistage, random sampling method on a national scale. A total of 52,627 adult participants aged 18~64 years from the CNHS 2015-2017 were included in this study. HH was identified as SUA level cut-offs for males and females of 420 μmol/L and 360 μmol/L, respectively, with mean systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg and/or mean diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg and/or received antihypertensive treatment within two weeks. The differences in HH prevalence between or among the subgroups were compared by the Rao-Scott chi-square test. The correlations between HH and covariates or metabolic factors were detected by a weighted two-level multivariate survey logistic regression. The total weighted sufficient intake ratios of beans and nuts, vegetables, and red meat were 59.1%, 46.6%, and 64.8%, respectively. The weighted prevalence of HH in the total participants was 4.7% (95% CI: 4.3-5.0%). The positive effects of bean and nut on HH were observed. The participants who had sufficient bean and nut intake showed lower risk for HH (for the total participants: OR = 0.734, 95% CI = 0.611-0.881). The prevalence of HH might have been a public health problem, and bean and nut intake might be a protective factor for HH in the Chinese population.

Abstract
Serum urate (SU) is an independent predictor for the incidence of diabetes. In current diabetes treatment regimens, there is insufficient appreciation of the importance of hyperuricemia (HU) in disease control and prevention. To summarize the updated knowledge on the effects of SU on β-cell function, insulin resistance and chronic diabetic complications, as well as to evaluate the management of patients with both HU and diabetes, we searched the MEDLINE PubMed database, and included 285 journal articles. An inverted U-shaped relationship between fasting plasma glucose and SU levels was established in this review. Elevated SU levels may enhance the development of chronic diabetic complications, including macrovascular and microvascular dysfunction. Diet and exercise are essential parts of the lifestyle changes necessary for HU and diabetes management. Glucose- and urate-lowering drug selection and combination should be made with the principle of ameliorating, and at least not deteriorating, diabetes and HU. Medical artificial intelligence technology and monitoring systems can help to improve the effectiveness of long-term management of HU and diabetes through digital healthcare. This study comprehensively reviews and provides a scientific and reliable basis for and viewpoints on the clinical management of diabetes and HU.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the factors influencing hyperuricemia in children and adolescents and to provide a scientific basis for early prevention and treatment. METHODS A retrospective study (2017-2021) of the prevalence of hyperuricemia in children and adolescents was conducted, and the factors influencing hyperuricemia were analyzed by multi-factor logistic regression. RESULTS The overall prevalence of hyperuricemia in children and adolescents aged 6-17 years in northeast Sichuan Province was 55.12% (8676/15,739), of which 60.68% (5699/9392) in boys and 46.90% (2977/6347) in girls; the prevalence of hyperuricemia from 2017 to 2021 was 52.40% ( 1540/2939), 52.56% (1642/3124), 52.11% (1825/3502), 58.33% (1691/2899), and 60.40% (1978/3275), respectively; the prevalence rates of 6-12 years old were 48.92% (864/1766), 50.46% (769/1524), and 52.73% (685/1299), 56.99% (693/1216), 35.46% (444/1252), 46.33% (524/1131), 60.50% (720/1190), and 66.82% (739/1106), 58.95% (652/1106), and 62.17% (761/1106) for 13-17 years old, respectively, 62.17% (761/1224), 63.19% (855/1353), and 61.70% (970/1572), respectively. Logistic regression showed that the prevalence of male (OR = 1.451, 95% CI 1.034 to 2.035, p = 0.031), age (OR = 1.074, 95% CI 1.024 to 1.126, p = 0.003), overweight/obesity (OR = 1.733, 95% CI 1.204∼2.494, p = 0.003), blood creatinine (OR = 1.018, 95% CI 1.005∼1.031, p = 0.007), triglycerides (OR = 1.450, 95% CI 1.065∼1.972, p = 0.018), blood calcium (OR = 6.792, 95% CI 1.373∼33.594, p = 0.019), and systolic blood pressure (OR = 1.037, 95% CI 1.018∼1.057, p < 0.001) were influential factors for the development of hyperuricemia. CONCLUSION The prevalence of hyperuricemia was higher in children and adolescents aged 6-17 years in northeastern Sichuan Province, with a higher prevalence in boys than in girls, and the prevalence increased with age.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Calcium (Ca), potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg) may be involved in the occurrence and development of glaucoma by influencing the retinal oxidative stress and regulate blood pressure. However, epidemiological opinions on dietary intake of macroelement related to glaucoma are inconsistent. Herein, this study aims to explore the association between dietary Ca, K, and Mg consumption and glaucoma. METHODS Data of 7,042 adults aged ≥40 years old who received the glaucoma examinations were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 2005 to 2008 in this cross-sectional study. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to explore the association between dietary Ca, K, and Mg intake and glaucoma with the odd ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). We also investigated this relationship in individuals of different age, with/without hypertension and visual field defect (VFD). RESULTS There were 502 (8.11%) participants had glaucoma. After adjusted for covariables, we found that enough dietary Ca consumption was related to a decreased risk of glaucoma [OR = 0.59, 95%CI: (0.42-0.81)], whether in persons with/without hypertension (all P<0.05). In particular, dietary K intake may be a potential protect factor for glaucoma in non-hypertension populations [OR = 0.47, 95%CI: (0.22-0.99), P = 0.049]. Additionally, hypertension/non-hypertension persons who aged <65 years old or with/without VFD should all pay attention to the enough dietary supplement of Ca, K, and Mg according to their own circumstances. CONCLUSION Enough dietary Ca, K, and Mg consumption may be potential protect factors of glaucoma that could provide some dietary reference for developing targeted glaucoma prevention and control measures.

Abstract
Background Hyperuricemia is a common condition that can lead to gout and other related diseases. It has been suggested that Inflammatory factors play important role in the development and progression of hyperuricemia. The dietary inflammatory index (DII) enables the assessment of the inflammatory potential of an individual's diet. This study aimed to investigate the association between DII and hyperuricemia. Methods This study was performed based on a cross-sectional dataset from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2018. Participants aged 18 years and above with dietary intake and serum uric acid level information were included. DII scores were calculated using dietary intake data, based on which participants were categorized into tertiles. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was adopted to investigate the association between DII and hyperuricemia. Results Among a total of 31,781 participants in the analysis, 5,491 had hyperuricemia. After adjusting confounding factors, the odds of hyperuricemia are significantly higher in the second (OR 1.17, 95% CI 1.07-1.29) and third tertiles (OR 1.31, 95% CI 1.19-1.44) relative to the first one. Conclusion This study suggested that diet with higher inflammatory potential, as measured by DII, is associated with increased hyperuricemia risk. These findings indicated that dietary modification may be a potential approach for hyperuricemia's prevention and control.

Abstract
Introduction Although several studies have explored the associations between single essential metals and serum uric acid (SUA), the study about the essential metal mixture and the interactions of metals for hyperuricemia remains unclear. Methods We performed a cross-sectional study to explore the association of the SUA levels with the blood essential metal mixture, including magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn) in Chinese community-dwelling adults (n=1039). The multivariable linear regression, the weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were conducted to estimate the associations of blood essential metals with SUA levels and the BKMR model was also conducted to estimate the interactions of the essential metals on SUA. Results In the multivariable linear regression, the association of blood Mg, Mn, and Cu with SUA was statistically significant, both in considering multiple metals and a single metal. In WQS regression [β=13.59 (95%CI: 5.57, 21.60)] and BKMR models, a positive association was found between the mixture of essential metals in blood and SUA. Specifically, blood Mg and Cu showed a positive association with SUA, while blood Mn showed a negative association. Additionally, no interactions between individual metals on SUA were observed. Discussion In conclusion, further attention should be paid to the relationship between the mixture of essential metals in blood and SUA. However, more studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Magnesium has been found to have a strong association with peripheral arterial disease (PAD), and dietary magnesium intake shows promise as a predictor of the condition. However, the relationship between low dietary magnesium intake and an increased risk of PAD remains uncertain, and further research is needed to clarify this relationship. METHODS This study analyzed data from 5969 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) of the United States from 1999 to 2004. Multifactorial logistic regression models were used to investigate the association between dietary magnesium intake and PAD. RESULTS Participants with PAD had lower dietary magnesium intake compared to those without PAD. After adjusting for all covariates, dietary magnesium intake remained negatively associated with PAD (OR: 0.999, 95% CI: 0.998, 1.000). When dietary magnesium intake was divided into quartiles, compared with the fourth quantile, the first quartile is associated with a higher incidence rate of PAD (OR: 1.560, 95%CI: 1.019, 2.386). Subgroup analysis revealed that the link between dietary magnesium intake and PAD remained significant among specific subgroups, including non-white, never or former smokers, and non-hypertensive, non-diabetic individuals (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Our study provides evidence that dietary magnesium intake is negatively associated with the incidence of PAD. Therefore, people with inadequate dietary magnesium intake, particularly those with excessively low intake, should increase their magnesium intake to reduce the risk of PAD.

Abstract
A growing aging population is associated with increasing incidences of aging-related diseases and socioeconomic burdens. Hence, research into healthy longevity and aging is urgently needed. Longevity is an important phenomenon in healthy aging. The present review summarizes the characteristics of longevity in the elderly population in Bama, China, where the proportion of centenarians is 5.7-fold greater than the international standard. We examined the impact of genetic and environmental factors on longevity from multiple perspectives. We proposed that the phenomenon of longevity in this region is of high value for future investigations in healthy aging and aging-related disease and may provide guidance for fostering the establishment and maintenance of a healthy aging society.

Abstract
Phthalate metabolites have been detected from urine in most of the US population and have become a public health problem. However, the association between phthalate metabolites and hyperuricemia has been scarcely studied so far. We aimed to evaluate if phthalate metabolites were associated with hyperuricemia in US adults. A total of 8816 participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2018 were included in our study. We used multivariable logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models to explore the association between urinary phthalate metabolites and hyperuricemia. Then, stratified analyses were conducted by sex and age. The prevalence of hyperuricemia in the study sample was 20.35%. Compared to the lowest quantile, the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for hyperuricemia were all statistically significant in following phthalate metabolites: 1.34 (1.13-1.58) for the second quartile in Mono-isobutyl phthalate (MiBP), 1.21 (1.01-1.46) for the highest quartile in Mono-(carboxyoctyl) phthalate (MCOP), 0.66 (0.56-0.76) for the second quartile in Mono-(2-ethyl)-hexyl phthalate (MEHP), 1.22 (1.05-1.43) for quartile 2 in Benzyl butyl phthalate (ΣBBP), and 1.43 (1.22-1.66) for the third quartile in high molecular-weight phthalate (ΣHigh MWP), respectively. Our results indicate that several urinary phthalate metabolites are positively associated with the odds of hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Epidemiological studies using conventional statistical methods have reported an association between individual metal exposure and hyperuricemia (HUA). There is also evidence that diet may influence HUA development, although the available data are inconsistent. We therefore used an elastic net regression (ENR) model to screen the usefulness of various environmental and dietary factors as predictors of HUA in a large sample cohort. This study included 6217 subjects drawn from the Shenzhen Aging Related Disorder Cohort. We obtained information on the subjects' dietary habits via face-to-face interviews and used inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to measure the urinary concentrations of 24 metals to which elderly persons in large urban areas may be exposed. An elastic net regression (ENR) model was generated to screen the utility of the metals and dietary factors as predictors of HUA, and we demonstrated the superiority of the ENR model by comparing it to a traditional logistic regression model. The identified predictors were used to create a clinically usable nomogram for identifying patients at risk of developing HUA. The area under curve (AUC) value of the final model was 0.692 for the training set and 0.706 for the test set. Important predictors of HUA were Zn, As, V, and Fe as well as consumption of wheat, beans, and rice; the corresponding estimated odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were 1.091 (0.932,1.251), 1.190 (1.093,1.286), 0.924 (0.793,1.055), 0.704 (0.626,0.781), 0.998 (0.996,1.001), 0.993 (0.989,0.998), and 1.001 (0.998,1.002), respectively. In contrast to previous studies, we found that both urinary metal concentrations and dietary habits are important for predicting HUA risk. Exposure to specific metals and consumption of specific foods were identified as important predictors of HUA, indicating that the incidence of this disease could be reduced by reducing exposure to these metals and promoting improved dietary habits.

Abstract
Ubiquitous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metals could induce hyperuricemia and oxidative damage individually, while their co-exposure effects on hyperuricemia risk and the potential roles of oxidative damage in these health outcomes remain poorly understood. We conducted a cross-sectional study in 1379 coke oven workers. We evaluated the levels of PAH-metal exposure and oxidative damage by urinary monohydroxy-PAHs, plasma benzo [a]pyrene-7,8-diol-9,10-epoxide-albumin (BPDE-Alb) adducts, urinary metals, urinary 8-iso-prostaglandin-F2α, and urinary 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG). The subjects were classified into cases of hyperuricemia and controls by the levels of blood uric acid. We found that the sum of multiple hydroxyphenanthrene (ΣOH-Phe) was robustly associated with the increase in hyperuricemia risk, while rubidium and strontium had robust protective associations with hyperuricemia risk (Ptrend<0.05). The risk association of ΣOH-Phe was weaker in workers with high levels of rubidium and strontium [P for modifying effect (PME) < 0.030]. The protective association of strontium was more pronounced in workers with higher ΣOH-Phe (PME = 0.014). We also found that 8-OH-dG was a risk factor for hyperuricemia (Ptrend = 0.006) and mediated 10.13% of the elevated hyperuricemia risk associated with ΣOH-Phe. Our findings suggested that individual PAHs and metals, as well as their co-exposure, may influence hyperuricemia risk among coke oven workers, with oxidative DNA damage playing a potential mediating role in their associations.

Abstract
Background Studies have shown that a direct association exists between the diet and blood uric acid concentrations. However, works on the association of dietary patterns with blood uric acid concentrations and hyperuricemia remain limited. Objective This study aims to evaluate the association of dietary patterns with blood uric acid concentrations and hyperuricemia. Methods The relationship between dietary patterns and hyperuricemia was explored through a nutritional epidemiological survey in China (n = 4855). Three statistical methods, including principal component analysis, reduced rank regression (RRR), and partial least squares regression, were used to extract dietary patterns. General linear regression and logistic regression analyses were utilized to explore the relationship of dietary patterns with blood uric acid concentrations and hyperuricemia. Results After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the score for the plant-based dietary pattern was found to be negatively correlated with blood uric acid levels (β = − 3.225) and that for the animal dietary pattern was discovered to be directly correlated with blood uric acid levels (β = 3.645). The participants in the highest quartile of plant-based dietary pattern scores were at a low risk of hyperuricemia (OR = 0.699; 95% CI: 0.561–0.870, P < 0.05), whereas those in the highest quartile of animal dietary pattern scores were at a high risk of hyperuricemia (OR = 1.401; 95% CI: 1.129–1.739, P < 0.05). The participants in the third quartile of scores for the RRR dietary pattern, which was characterized by the relatively high intake of poultry, sugary beverages, and animal organs and the low intake of desserts and snacks, had a significantly higher risk of hyperuricemia than those in the first quartile of scores for the RRR dietary pattern (OR = 1.421; 95% CI: 1.146–1.763, P < 0.05). Conclusions Our research indicated that plant-based dietary pattern analyzed by PCA was negatively associated with blood uric acid concentrations, while animal-based dietary pattern was directly associated with blood uric acid concentrations. The RRR dietary pattern may have the potential to induce elevations in blood uric acid concentrations. Dietary Pattern Associated with the Risk of Hyperuricemia in Chinese Elderly: Result from China Nutrition and Health Surveillance 2015–2017. Nutrients 2022; 14:nu14040844. Abstract
Our current study aimed to estimate the relationship between dietary patterns and hyperuricemia among the Chinese elderly over 60 years old. All the data were obtained from China Nutrition and Health Surveillance during 2015–2017. A total of 18,691 participants who completed the whole survey were included in our statistical analysis. The definition of hyperuricemia was 420 μmmol/L (7 mg/dL) for male and 360 μmmol/L (6 mg/dL) for female. Exploratory factor analysis was applied to explore posterior dietary patterns in our samples, and five dietary patterns were recognized, namely “Typical Chinese”, “Modern Chinese”, “Western”, “Animal products and alcohol”, and “Tuber and fermented vegetables”. After multiple adjusted logistic regression, participants in the highest quartile of “typical Chinese” (Q4 vs. Q1, OR = 0.32, 95% CI: 0.28–0.37, p-trend < 0.0001), “modern Chinese” (Q4 vs. Q1, OR = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.71–0.93, p-trend = 0.0021) and “tuber and fermented vegetables” (Q4 vs. Q1, OR = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.69–0.88, p-trend < 0.0001) showed a lower risk of hyperuricemia, while animal products and alcohol was positively associated with hyperuricemia (Q4 vs. Q1, OR = 1.49, 95% CI: 1.31–1.7, p-trend < 0.0001). We also found that participants who mainly ate a modern Chinese diet tended to meet the RNI/AI of nutrients we discuss in this paper, which may supply some information for hyperuricemia prevention and management by dietary methods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metal exposures are suspected to associate with the risk of hyperuricemia (HUA), but the current results are still conflicting. OBJECTIVE To investigate the associations between multiple plasma metal exposures and HUA risk. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in 1406 Chinese Han adults who underwent routine physical examination in the Eighth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University in Shenzhen. The plasma levels of 13 metals were measured by the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Multivariable logistic, linear regression models, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) penalized regression analysis, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were applied to assess the associations. RESULTS The median plasma uric acid concentration in HUA group (434 μmol/L) was significantly higher than that in non-HUA group (305 μmol/L). The multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of HUA were 1.62(1.08-2.43) for magnesium, 1.61(1.05-2.47) for copper, 1.62(1.06-2.49) for zinc, 1.87(1.26-2.81) for arsenic, 1.50(1.01-2.23) for selenium, and 1.70(1.16-2.49) for thallium based on the single-metal logistic regression models, comparing the highest versus the lowest quartile of metal levels. Further multi-metal logistic, linear regression models and the LASSO analysis all indicated positive associations of zinc, arsenic with HUA risk or uric acid levels. RCS model indicated an inverted V-shaped positive association between zinc levels and HUA risk (p for non-linearity = 0.048, p for overall association = 0.022), while arsenic levels showed a positive and linear dose-response relationship with HUA risk (p for non-linearity = 0.892, p for overall association<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Higher plasma levels of zinc and arsenic might increase HUA risk and showed positive dose-response relationships. Further cohort studies in larger population are required to testify our findings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The relationship between dietary nut intake and hyperuricemia risk remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between different nut intake and hyperuricemia risk with a cross-sectional study. DESIGN A semi-quantitative FFQ was adopted to collect dietary information. Biochemical and anthropometric parameters were measured by standard methods. Multivariate-adjusted logistic regression models were implemented to analyse the relationship between individual nut intake and hyperuricemia risk. SETTING Qingdao University in Shandong Province, China. PARTICIPANTS During 2018-2019, a total of 14 056 undergraduates (6862 males and 7194 females) aged 15-25 years participated in the study. RESULTS After adjusting for multiple confounding factors, compared with the lowest quartile, the highest quartile intakes of pine nut (95 % CI (0·51, 0·98)) was significantly associated with 29 % reduction in hyperuricemia risk, the highest quartile intake of walnut (OR = 0·78; 95 % CI (0·58, 1·05)) was marginally negatively associated with hyperuricemia risk. CONCLUSIONS The present study showed that the relationships between intakes of different nuts and hyperuricemia risk were different. Increased dietary intakes of walnut and pine nut are negatively associated with the hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Uric acid (UA) is produced in the liver and excreted through the kidneys and intestines. If UA is overproduced or its excretion reduces, the concentration of UA increases, leading to hyperuricemia and gout. The high concentration of UA is also related to cardiovascular disease, hypertension, obesity, and other diseases. Fruits are healthy foods. However, fruits contain fructose and small amounts of purine, and the product of their metabolism is UA. Therefore, theoretically, eating fruits will increase the concentration of serum UA. Fruit components are numerous, and their effects on serum UA are complex. According to the current research, fructose, purine, polyphenols, vitamin C, dietary fiber, and minerals present in fruits influence serum UA concentrations. In addition to the UA synthesized by fructose and purine metabolism, the mechanisms by which other components affect the concentration of serum UA can be summarized as follows: (a) inhibiting xanthine oxidase; (b) reducing reabsorption of UA; and (c) improving the excretion of UA. In this review, we comprehensively discussed the fruit components that affect serum UA concentrations, and explained their mechanisms for the first time, which references for patients with hyperuricemia to take fruits. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: With the rising prevalence, hyperuricemia and gout have become public health problems that endanger our daily life. The key to the treatment of hyperuricemia is to control the level of serum UA within the normal range. Fruits are healthy foods. However, fruit components are numerous, and their effects on serum UA are complex. According to the current research, fructose, purine, polyphenols, vitamin C, dietary fiber, and minerals present in fruits influence serum UA concentrations. In this review, we comprehensively discussed the fruit components that affect serum UA concentrations. We also explained their mechanisms, which references for patients with hyperuricemia to take fruits.

Abstract
Background Previous reports regarding the predictive power of adiposity indices remain inconsistent, and longitudinal studies on this top are limited. The associations of hyperuricemia risk with changes in obesity status, as well as the joint effects of baseline adiposity indices and body adiposity change on hyperuricemia risk are not fully elucidated. This study aimed to explore the independent and joint associations of baseline adiposity indicators and body adiposity change with hyperuricemia risk among middle-aged and older population in China. Methods A total of 2895 participants aged ≥ 45 years from the baseline survey of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study were followed up for 4 years. Anthropometric parameters (weight, height, and waist circumference) and serum uric acid were obtained using standard devices. Adjusted odds ratio and 95% confidential interval were calculated to estimate the associations between predictor variables and hyperuricemia risk using multivariate logistic regression. Results Of the 2895 participants, 293 (10.12%) cases of hyperuricemia were identified. Increased baseline body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and waist-height ratio (WHtR) were significantly associated with higher risks of hyperuricemia. A slightly greater but non-significant area under the curve value was observed for waist circumference (0.622) than for BMI (0.611) and WHtR (0.614) (P = 0.447). Compared to subjects with stable adiposity status, participants with weight loss of ≥ 4 kg or waist circumference loss of ≥ 6 cm had a 56% or 55% lower risk of hyperuricemia, and those with weight gain of > 4 kg had a 1.62-fold higher risk of hyperuricemia. Compared to those without obesity, participants with incident or persistent obesity were more likely to develop hyperuricemia. Additionally, regardless of stable or increased weight/waist circumference during follow-up, individuals with obesity at baseline had a higher risk of incident hyperuricemia. Conclusion This study demonstrates that BMI, waist circumference, and WHtR equally predict the development of hyperuricemia, and weight loss and waist circumference reduction are favorable in preventing hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Objectives: Hyperuricemia is a metabolic abnormality that has cast an enormous burden on global healthcare. Previous studies have revealed the close association between insulin resistance and hyperuricemia. Therefore, monitoring insulin sensitivity may be a possible way to prevent hyperuricemia. Recent studies have demonstrated the usefulness of triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) as a simple surrogate of insulin resistance. Hence, our study aimed to explore the impact of TyG on hyperuricemia and its value to improve the risk stratification and prevention of hyperuricemia. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 6466 subjects (mean age: 59.57 years, 60.19% females) from northeast China between September 2017 to May 2018. TyG was determined as ln[fasting TG(mg/dL)×FPG(mg/dL)/2]. Hyperuricemia was defined as serum uric acid ≥ 357 μmol/L for females and ≥ 417 μmol/L for males. Results: The prevalence of hyperuricemia was 5.24%. In the full model, each SD increment of TyG caused a 12.528 μmol/L elevation of serum urate concentration and a 54.1% additional risk for hyperuricemia. When dividing TyG into quartiles, the top quartile had a 2.730 times risk for hyperuricemia than the bottom one. Moreover, smooth curve fitting demonstrated this association was linear. Additionally, subgroup analysis revealed the association was robust to several risk factors of hyperuricemia. Finally, AUC displayed an improvement when introducing TyG into clinical risk factors (0.751 vs 0.772, p < 0.001), category-free net reclassification index (0.304, 95% CI: 0.195-0.413, P < 0.001) and integrated discrimination index (0.009, 95% CI: 0.004-0.013, P < 0.001) also showed the improvement from TyG. Conclusion: Our work revealed the linear and robust association between TyG and hyperuricemia. Furthermore, our results suggest the importance of simultaneous glycemic and lipids control in the prevention of hyperuricemia. Most importantly, our findings implicate the value of TyG to optimize the risk stratification and prevention of hyperuricemia.
