Abstract
INTRODUCTION The present study aimed at all the benefits induced by taking the Mediterranean or Japanese diet among nurses and whether any beneficial differences in intakes between the two diets were considered. METHODS The author searched PubMed and Embase databases for medical subheadings terms and free full text referring to "Diet," "Mediterranean," "Japanese," and "Nurses" before 31st December 2022. RESULTS A total of 14 studies were included in this scoping review, which better underlined all the benefits implicated in the Mediterranean or Japanese diets assumption and also if there were any differences between the two diets. These eating behaviors were exclusively investigated among nurses. CONCLUSION The nursing profession has always been considered the most stressful healthcare activity. However, some important concerns in the regular lifestyle, such as eating and physical activity, might help to live better.

Abstract
Introduction Typical Western diet, rich in salt, contributes to autoimmune disease development. However, conflicting reports exist about the effect of salt on neutrophil effector functions, also in the context of arthritis. Methods We investigated the effect of sodium chloride (NaCl) on neutrophil viability and functions in vitro, and in vivo employing the murine K/BxN-serum transfer arthritis (STA) model. Results and discussion The effects of NaCl and external reactive oxygen species (H2O2) were further examined on osteoclasts in vitro. Hypertonic sodium-rich media caused primary/secondary cell necrosis, altered the nuclear morphology, inhibited phagocytosis, degranulation, myeloperoxidase (MPO) peroxidation activity and neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation, while increasing total ROS production, mitochondrial ROS production, and neutrophil elastase (NE) activity. High salt diet (HSD) aggravated arthritis by increasing inflammation, bone erosion, and osteoclast differentiation, accompanied by increased NE expression and activity. Osteoclast differentiation was decreased with 25 mM NaCl or 100 nM H2O2 addition to isotonic media. In contrast to NaCl, external H2O2 had pro-resorptive effects in vitro. We postulate that in arthritis under HSD, increased bone erosion can be attributed to an enhanced oxidative milieu maintained by infiltrating neutrophils, rather than a direct effect of NaCl.

Abstract
Few observational studies investigated the relationship between single food groups and disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Within a recent Italian cross-sectional study (365 patients, median age: 58.46 years, 78.63% females), we focused on two food groups, olive oil and nuts, representing vegetable sources of fatty acids. Disease activity was measured with Disease Activity Score on 28 joints based on C-reactive protein (DAS28-CRP) and the Simplified Disease Activity Index (SDAI). Robust linear and logistic regression models included tertile-based consumption categories of each food group and several confounders. Stratified analyses were performed by disease severity or duration. Higher consumption of both food groups exerted a favorable effect on disease activity, significant only for olive oil (Beta: -0.33, p-value: 0.03) in the linear regression on the overall sample. This favorable effect was stronger in the more severe or long-standing forms of RA (p-value for heterogeneity <0.05, especially for disease severity). Significant ORs were as low as ~0.30 for both food groups, strata (i.e., more severe and long-standing RA), and disease activity measures. Mean DAS28-CRP significantly decreased by ~0.70 for olive oil and ~0.55 for nuts in the two strata; mean SDAI significantly decreased by 3.30 or more for olive oil in the two strata. Globally, the beta coefficients doubled, and the ORs halved (in absolute values) for both food groups, reaching significance in 12 of the 16 available models fitted to the more severe or long-standing RA strata. More compromised forms of RA may benefit from increasing consumption of olive oil, olives, and nuts.

Abstract
Aim: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autoinflammatory and genetic disease associated with chronic inflammation. Colchicine is the gold standard treatment for FMF, although some patients respond partially. Factors such as heavy exercise, cold exposure, stress, recent infection or surgery have been associated with the occurrence of attacks. Recently, nutrition is thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between nutrition, inflammation and colchicine resistance by considering the nutritional status of FMF patients.
Material and Method: The study included 59 patients and 67 healthy individuals who were matched for gender, age and body mass index (BMI). Clinical, anthropometric, and biochemical measurements were obtained. Three-days, 24-hour diet records were recorded in the nutrient database program (BeBiS software program), the amounts of macro and micronutrient contents were determined and the Diet Inflammatory Index (DII) score was calculated and compared between groups.
Results: Statistically, the diets of FMF patients were found to be higher in omega-6, carbohydrate percentage and salt content, and lower in terms of lactose, fat percentage, monounsaturated fatty acids, retinol and biotin compared to controls. There was no correlation between DII and acute phase reactants and colchicine dose.
Conclusion: The course of FMF can be affected by environmental factors, as well as its genetic background. Nutrition is a new and interesting topic in this regard and may contribute to inflammation and disease activity in FMF patients.

Abstract
Background: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an inherited autoinflammatory disease characterized by short acute attacks, with an as yet unknown cause. Several authors have investigated the role of some foods as potential triggers. This narrative review aims to analyze the correlation between diet and FMF clinical outcomes. Methods: The review was carried out following PRISMA statement guidelines, including all cross-sectional, case-crossover, and trial studies written in English and conducted between 1974 and 2022. Results: Overall, 642 records were identified through PubMed/MEDLINE (292) and Scopus (350), and seven studies were included: three out of seven (43%) studies evaluated FMF attack recurrence or time between consumption of high-fat foods and FMF attacks, while another three (43%) articles variously assessed FMF severity, and one (14%) evaluated the distribution of MEFV mutations. Conclusions: To date, conflicting results have been reported about fatty and salty food intake and FMF attack recurrence. Moreover, some authors have suggested a possible role of wheat. Finally, a diet rich in antioxidants and supplements with an anti-inflammatory effect could partially reduce symptoms and improve the well-being of FMF patients. Nevertheless, no conclusive data could be drawn about the impact of diet in FMF symptom triggering, and further studies are required to clarify this putative association.

Abstract
Background Globally, a high-salt diet (HSD) has become a threat to human health as it can lead to a high risk of cardiac damage. Although some studies investigating HSD have been carried out, the majority has been conducted in males, and there are few female-specific studies, thereby ignoring any effects of sex-specific damage on the heart. In this study, we determined how HSD induces different pathways of cardiovascular diseases through sex-specific effects on cardiac damage in mice. Methods An HSD murine model of male and female C57BL/6J mice was fed with sodium-rich chow (4% NaCl). After 8 weeks, cardiac tissues were collected, and the whole gene transcriptome of the hearts of male and female mice was characterized and analyzed using high-throughput RNA sequencing. Immunohistochemistry staining was used to further assess the harmful effects of HSD on protein expression of genes associated with immunity, fibrosis, and apoptosis in male and female mice. Results HSD drastically altered the cardiac transcriptome compared to that of the normal heart in both male and female mice and had a sex-specific effect on the cardiac composition in the transcriptome. HSD produced various differentially expressed genes and affected different KEGG pathways of the transcriptome in male and female mice. Furthermore, we found that HSD induced different pathways of cardiovascular disease in the male mice and female mice. The pathway of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is significantly enriched in HSD-treated male mice, while the pathway of dilated cardiomyopathy is significantly enriched in HSD-treated female mice. Finally, metabolism, immunity, fibrosis, and apoptosis in the mouse heart showed sex-specific changes predicting cardiac damage. Conclusion Our results demonstrate that HSD adversely impacts cardiac structure and function by affecting the metabolism, immunity, fibrosis, and apoptosis in the murine heart and induces the mouse to suffer from sex-specific cardiovascular disease. This study provides a new perspective and basis for the differences in the pharmacology and interventional treatment of sex-specific cardiovascular diseases induced by HSD in men and women.

Abstract
High salt (NaCl) concentrations are found in a number of tissues under physiological and pathological conditions. Here, we analyzed the effects induced by high salt on the function of human neutrophils. The culture of neutrophils in medium supplemented with high salt (50 mM NaCl) for short periods (30-120 min) inhibited the ability of conventional agonists to induce the production of IL-8 and the activation of respiratory burst. By contrast, exposure to high salt for longer periods (6-18 h) resulted in the activation of neutrophils revealed by the production of high levels of IL-8, the activation of the respiratory burst, and a marked synergistic effect on the production of TNF-α induced by LPS. Increasing osmolarity of the culture medium by the addition of sorbitol or mannitol (100 mM) was shown to be completely unable to stimulate neutrophil responses, suggesting that high sodium but not an increased osmolarity mediates the activation on neutrophils responses. A similar biphasic effect was observed when the function of monocytes was analyzed. Short term exposure to high salt suppressed IL-8 and TNF-α production induced by LPS while culture for longer periods triggered the production of IL-8 but not TNF-α in the absence of LPS stimulation. Contradictory results have been published regarding how high salt modulates neutrophil function. Our results suggest that the modulation of neutrophil function by high salt is strongly dependent on the exposure time.

Abstract
Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy has revolutionized the breast cancer treatment landscape. However, ICI-induced systemic inflammatory immune-related adverse events (irAE) remain a major clinical challenge. Previous studies in our laboratory and others have demonstrated that a high-salt (HS) diet induces inflammatory activation of CD4+T cells leading to anti-tumor responses. In our current communication, we analyzed the impact of dietary salt modification on therapeutic and systemic outcomes in breast-tumor-bearing mice following anti-cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 (CTLA4) monoclonal antibody (mAb) based ICI therapy. As HS diet and anti-CTLA4 mAb both exert pro-inflammatory activation of CD4+T cells, we hypothesized that a combination of these would lead to enhanced irAE response, while low-salt (LS) diet through blunting peripheral inflammatory action of CD4+T cells would reduce irAE response. We utilized an orthotopic murine breast tumor model by injecting Py230 murine breast cancer cells into syngeneic C57Bl/6 mice. In an LS diet cohort, anti-CTLA4 mAb treatment significantly reduced tumor progression (day 35, 339 ± 121 mm3), as compared to isotype mAb (639 ± 163 mm3, p < 0.05). In an HS diet cohort, treatment with anti-CTLA4 reduced the survival rate (day 80, 2/15) compared to respective normal/regular salt (NS) diet cohort (8/15, p < 0.05). Further, HS plus anti-CTLA4 mAb caused an increased expression of inflammatory cytokines (IFNγ and IL-1β) in lung infiltrating and peripheral circulating CD4+T cells. This inflammatory activation of CD4+T cells in the HS plus anti-CTLA4 cohort was associated with the upregulation of inflammasome complex activity. However, an LS diet did not induce any significant irAE response in breast-tumor-bearing mice upon treatment with anti-CTLA4 mAb, thus suggesting the role of high-salt diet in irAE response. Importantly, CD4-specific knock out of osmosensitive transcription factor NFAT5 using CD4cre/creNFAT5flox/flox transgenic mice caused a downregulation of high-salt-mediated inflammatory activation of CD4+T cells and irAE response. Taken together, our data suggest that LS diet inhibits the anti-CTLA4 mAb-induced irAE response while retaining its anti-tumor efficacy.

Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between dietary sodium, potassium, and sodium:potassium ratio and clinical disease activity parameters, damage accrual, and cardiovascular disease risk factors in a population of patients with systemic lupus erythematous (SLE). Research design and study sample: A cross-sectional study including a total of 280 patients was conducted (90.4% females; mean age 46.9 ± 12.85 years). Data collection: The SLE Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI-2K) and the SDI Damage Index were used to assess disease activity and disease-related damage, respectively. A 24-hour diet recall was used to estimate dietary intake of sodium and potassium. Results: Dietary sodium intake was significantly associated with anti-dsDNA (β = -.005; 95% CI [.002 .008]; p = .001) and complement C4 level (β = -.002; 95% CI [-.003, .000]; p = .039). Dietary potassium intake was also significantly associated with complement C3 level (β = -.004; 95% CI [-.007, -.001]; p = .021). Multiple logistic regression models revealed a positive association between dietary sodium intake and the risk of having hsCRP > 3 (p = .005) and an inverse association between dietary potassium intake and the risk of having hsCRP > 3 (p = .004). Conclusions: SLE patients with higher dietary sodium and lower dietary potassium intakes had an increased risk of higher hsCRP. Dietary sodium intake was significantly associated with anti-dsDNA and complement C4 level, while dietary potassium intake was associated with complement C3 level, supporting that dietary sodium and potassium intakes might play a key role in markers related to disease activity in SLE patients.

Abstract
The incidence of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) is on the rise. A high salt content in the diet was found to play a crucial role in mediating IMIDs. It was demonstrated that increased salt concentration favors the differentiation of CD4+ cells to pathogenic Th17 cells, which predispose to several inflammatory diseases by modulating the immunological milieu. In auto-immune diseases increased salt concentration causes stable induction of Th17 cells. In cancer, increased salt concentration triggers chronic inflammation and increases vascular endothelial growth factor levels. Salt-mediated proliferation of Th17 cells has been found to reduce nitric oxide production in the endothelial cells, leading to hypertension. Increased salt concentration was found to alter the intestinal flora, which favors local inflammation. This review attempts to explain the role of high salt concentration and its molecular pathways in causing IMIDs.

Abstract
Chronic cardiovascular diseases are associated with inflammatory responses within the blood vessels and end organs. The origin of this inflammation has not been certain, and neither is its relationship to disease clear. There is a need to determine whether this association is causal or coincidental to the processes leading to cardiovascular disease. These processes are themselves complex: many cardiovascular diseases arise in conjunction with the presence of sustained elevation of blood pressure. Inflammatory processes have been linked to hypertension, and causality has been suggested. Evidence of causality poses the difficult challenge of linking the integrated and multifaceted biology of blood pressure regulation with vascular function and complex elements of immune system function. These include both, innate and adaptive immunity, as well as interactions between the host immune system and the omnipresent microorganisms that are encountered in the environment and that colonize and exist in commensal relationship with the host. Progress has been made in this task and has drawn on experimental approaches in animals, much of which have focused on hypertension occurring with prolonged infusion of angiotensin II. These laboratory studies are complemented by studies that seek to inform disease mechanism by examining the genomic basis of heritable disease susceptibility in human populations. In this realm too, evidence has emerged that implicates genetic variation affecting immunity in disease pathogenesis. In this article, we survey the genetic and genomic evidence linking high blood pressure and its end-organ injuries to immune system function and examine evidence that genomic factors can influence disease risk. © 2021 American Physiological Society. Abstract
New evidence shows that up to 40% of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) cases are attributable to exposure to potentially modifiable factors. We can now identify people at higher risk of RA (pre-RA) through their family history, risk factors, autoantibodies and symptoms. Counselling these patients to act to modify factors known to be associated with RA risk could prevent the development of RA, and evidence shows that informing individuals of their risk and of ways to reduce it leads to positive behavioural change and is not harmful. This consumer-focused narrative review is targeted at primary care providers and physicians to describe 11 changes that can be made, based on current evidence linking potentially modifiable factors to RA risk. These evidence-based recommendations are: Cease smoking Reduce exposure to inhaled silica, dusts and occupational risks Maintain a healthy weight Increase leisure time physical activity Maintain good dental hygiene Maximise breastfeeding if able Maximise dietary quality, and avoid high salt diets Consume high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids and fish Reduce consumption of sugar-sweetened soft drinks Consume moderate levels of alcohol Remain Vitamin D replete This article is protected by copyright. Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW It is accepted that several chronic diseases are associated with inflammation. Dietary habits and the consumption of certain nutrients have been shown to influence inflammation, reflected by inflammatory cytokines. In this narrative review, we discuss currently developed tools to assess the inflammatory potential of diets and compare them with established tools. RECENT FINDINGS Four new indices were recently developed. The Inflammatory Score of the Diet is a modified version of the established Dietary Inflammatory Index. The novel Empirical Dietary Inflammatory Index works without previous dietary intake assessment and the Anti-Inflammatory Diet Index was specifically developed in a northern European population. The Dietary and Lifestyle Inflammation Scores addresses additional confounders. The informative value of dietary indices relies on the accuracy and completeness of dietary intake assessment. SUMMARY Dietary inflammatory indices are important tools to assess, compare and validate the inflammatory potential of diets across populations without the need for biomarker assessments. They allow to investigate associations between an (anti)-inflammatory diet with disease risk and course. Although the Dietary Inflammatory Index remains the most used index worldwide, currently developed indices allow more flexibility, have a different focus or simplify assessment. Additional foods, that were recently shown to modulate inflammation, but are not (fully) considered yet, may deserve more attention in the future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Knowledge remains scarce regarding diet and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) risk. Our objective was to investigate 4 dietary quality scores and SLE risk overall and by anti-double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) positive versus negative subtypes. METHODS We studied 79,568 women in the Nurses' Health Study (1984-2014) and 93,554 in the Nurses' Health Study II (1991-2013). Using validated food frequency questionnaires, we calculated 4 dietary scores: the 2010 Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI-2010), the Alternative Mediterranean Diet Score (aMed), the Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH), and the Empirical Dietary Inflammatory Pattern (EDIP). Incident SLE was confirmed by medical record review. Time-varying Cox regression models estimated pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) of SLE risk, overall and by anti-dsDNA, for cumulative average dietary quality score tertiles and individual AHEI-2010 components. RESULTS We identified 194 incident SLE cases. SLE risk was similar in women with the highest (versus lowest) dietary scores (AHEI-2010 HR 0.78 [95% CI 0.54-1.14], aMed HR 0.82 [95% CI 0.56-1.18], DASH HR 1.16 [95% CI 0.81-1.66], EDIP HR 0.83 [95% CI 0.57-1.21]). No association was demonstrated for anti-dsDNA+ or anti-dsDNA- SLE risk. Women in the highest (versus lowest) AHEI-2010 tertile of nut/legume intake had a decreased SLE risk (HR 0.59 [95% CI 0.40-0.87]). No association was demonstrated for other AHEI-2010 components and SLE risk. CONCLUSION We observed no association between long-term adherence to the AHEI-2010, aMed, DASH, or EDIP scores with SLE risk, suggesting a large effect of dietary quality on SLE risk is unlikely. However, potential reduction in overall SLE risk with high nut/legume intake warrants further investigation.

Abstract
Background Excessive salt intake is thought to exacerbate both development of hypertension and autoimmune diseases in animal models, but the clinical impact of excessive salt in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients is still unknown. We performed a cross-sectional study to clarify the associations between salt load index (urinary sodium-to-potassium ratio (Na/K ratio)), current disease activity, and hypertension in an RA population. Methods Three hundred thirty-six participants from our cohort database (KURAMA) were enrolled. We used the spot urine Na/K ratio as a simplified index of salt loading and used the 28-Joint RA Disease Activity Score (DAS28-ESR) as an indicator of current RA disease activity. Using these indicators, we evaluated statistical associations between urinary Na/K ratio, DAS28-ESR, and prevalence of hypertension. Results Urinary Na/K ratio was positively associated with measured systolic and diastolic blood pressure and also with prevalence of hypertension even after covariate adjustment (OR 1.34, p < 0.001). In addition, increased urinary Na/K ratio was significantly and positively correlated with DAS28-ESR in multiple regression analysis (estimate 0.12, p < 0.001), as was also the case in gender-separated and prednisolone-separated sub-analyses. Conclusion Urinary Na/K ratio was independently associated with current disease activity as well as with prevalence of hypertension in RA patients. Thus, dietary modifications such as salt restriction and potassium supplementation should be investigated as a potential candidate for attenuating both disease activity and hypertension in RA patients. Abstract
To our knowledge, no studies have investigated the relationship between a posteriori dietary patterns (DPs)-representing current dietary behavior-and disease activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We analyzed data from a recent Italian cross-sectional study including 365 RA patients (median age: 58.46 years, 78.63% females). Prevalent DPs were identified through principal component factor analysis on 33 nutrients. RA activity was measured according to the Disease Activity Score on 28 joints (DAS28) and the Simplified Disease Activity Index (SDAI). Single DPs were related to disease activity through linear and logistic regression models, adjusted for the remaining DPs and confounders. We identified five DPs (~80% variance explained). Among them, Vegetable unsaturated fatty acids (VUFA) and Animal unsaturated fatty acids (AUFA) DPs were inversely related to DAS28 in the overall analysis, and in the more severe or long-standing RA subgroups; the highest score reductions (VUFA: 0.81, AUFA: 0.71) were reached for the long-standing RA. The SDAI was inversely related with these DPs in subgroups only. This Italian study shows that scoring high on DPs based on unsaturated fats from either source provides independent beneficial effects of clinical relevance on RA disease activity, thus strengthening evidence on the topic.

Abstract
The filtering facepiece operates through filtration without the ability to kill the viruses. If the filtration might be combined with antiviral agents simultaneously in the masks, this would be much more efficient during the use of these masks and against cross-infection after being discarded. For centuries, sodium chloride (NaCl) contributes to inhibiting pathogens on various occasions. If aerosol with infectious agents reaches the filtering face-piecé surface of the filtering face-piece, coated with hypertonic saline, they become attracted by hygroscopic salt crystals. Proteins and nucleic acids lose their structural integrity and become inactivated concerning their infectious properties. We provide further evidence for cell growth inhibition with hypertonic saline in yeast cells comprising a defending cell wall. Proliferation was inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner, i.e., above 50 g/L, yeast cell proliferation was completely blocked. At a NaCl concentration of 100 g/L, even decomposition of the original inoculated organisms was observed. Therefore, we conclude that hypertonic saline- coated filtering facepiece might strongly reduce the numbers of infectious particles on their surfaces and thus protect mask carriers efficiently from infections.

Abstract
Background Though it is well-known that a high-salt diet (HSD) is associated with many chronic diseases, the effects of long-term high-salt intake on physiological functions and homeostasis remain elusive. In this study, we investigated whether and how an HSD affects mouse nociceptive thresholds, and myeloid cell trafficking and activation. Methods Healthy C57BL/6 male and female mice were fed an HSD (containing 4% NaCl in chow and 1% NaCl in water) from the time of weaning for 3 to 4 months. Circulating monocytes, nerve macrophages, spinal microglia, and associated inflammatory responses were scrutinized using flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) approaches. Mouse pain sensitivity to mechanical stimuli was monitored with von Frey tests along the experimental duration. Results Mice on an HSD have reduced mechanical thresholds. They feel more pain than those on a normal diet (ND), e.g., regular laboratory chow (0.3% NaCl in chow). An HSD induced not only a remarkable expansion of circulating monocytes, CCR2+Ly6Chi inflammatory monocytes in particular, but also an accumulation of CD11b+F4/80+ macrophages in the peripheral nerves and an activation of Iba-1+ spinal microglia. Replacing an HSD with a ND was unable to reverse the HSD-induced mechanical hypersensitivity or rescue the altered immune responses. However, treating HSD-fed mice with a chemokine receptor CCR2 antagonist effectively normalized the pain thresholds and immune cell profile in the periphery and spinal cord. An HSD failed to alter pain thresholds and myeloid cell activation in CCR2-deficient mice. Spinal microglial activation is required for HSD-induced mechanical hypersensitivity in male, but not in female mice. Conclusion Overall, this study provides evidence that an HSD has a long-term impact on physiological function. CCR2-mediated cellular response, including myeloid cell trafficking and associated inflammation, plays pivotal roles in salt-dietary modulation of pain sensitivity.

Abstract
Objectives Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is characterized by recurrent, self-limiting attacks of fever and serositis. Nutrition is very important in the management of chronic diseases. Previous studies suggested that salty and fatty diet cause inflammation, therefore we aimed to investigate the effects of dietary self-efficacy and behavior about low-salt or low-fat diet on disease course in children with FMF. Material and methods This cross-sectional study included patients aged between 10–18 years, diagnosed in our department and admitted between June 2019 and September 2019. Demographic and clinical properties were obtained from the medical files of the patients. Children’s Dietary Self-Efficacy Scale (CDSS) and Health Behavior Questionnaire (HBQ) – Diet Behavior Scale (DBS) were performed for dietary self-efficacy and behavior about preferring low-salt or low-fat diet. Clinical features were compared between patients, which were grouped according to the sum of these two scales, with a cut-off score of 5. Results The mean age of 74 FMF patients (44 females, 34 males), included in the study, was 14.6 ±2.82 years. Median CDSS and DBS scores of the patients were 5 (minimum –6, maximum 14) and 0 (minimum –10, maximum 12), respectively. According to the sum of these two scales, 39 (52.7%) patients who had scored at least 5, had a statistically higher rate of complete response to colchicine. The remaining clinical parameters were similar between these two groups. Conclusions Low-salt or low-fat diet may be an adjuvant modification in the management of children with FMF. Further studies are needed to clarify the role of low-salt or low-fat diet in FMF pathogenesis.

Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic progressive autoimmune disease, associated with significant morbidity, mainly due to progressive damage and consequent disability. Oxidative stress is an important part of RA pathophysiology, as in autoimmune disease the interaction between immune response and endogenous/exogenous antigens subsequently induce the production of reactive oxygen species. The oxidative stress process seems to be positively strongly correlated with inflammation and accelerated joint destruction. We were asking ourselves if the oxidative stress biomarkers are the mirror tools of disease activity, outcome, and inflammation level in a group of RA patients under standard or biological therapy compared to healthy age-matched controls. In order to do this, the oxidative stress damage biomarkers (lipids peroxide and protein carbonyl level), antioxidant defense capacity, and pro-inflammatory status of plasma were quantified. In this study, we took into account the complete picture of RA diseases and assessed, for the first time, the inflammatory level in correlation with the oxidative stress level and antioxidant capacity of RA patients. Our results revealed that protein oxidation through carbonylation is significantly increased in RA groups compared to controls, and both protein carbonyl Pcarb and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) are reliable markers of ROS damage. Therefore, it is unanimous that neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte/lymphocyte ratio ( MLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PltLR) correlated with Pcarb, and TBARS can provide a view of the complex phenomenon represented by proteins/lipids damage, key contributors to disease outcome, and an increased awareness should be attributed to these biomarkers.

Abstract
Obesity and nutrients intake deficiencies may contribute to the clinical manifestations and inflammatory processes in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between nutritional status and dietary intake with clinical variables in Mexican-mestizo SLE patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 130 female SLE patients, classified by the 1997 SLE American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria; the clinical activity was evaluated by the Mexican-Systemic Lupus Erythematosus-Disease Activity Index (Mex-SLEDAI); body mass index (BMI) by the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria; the energy calculation and nutritional intake were performed by Nutritionist Pro Diet software. SLE patients with excess weight (BMI > 25 kg/m2) showed a higher score of clinical activity (Mex-SLEDAI = 2; p = 0.003), higher clinical activity prevalence (40.9%; p = 0.039) and a significant association for high clinical activity (odds ratio (OR) = 2.52; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.08-5.9; p = 0.033), in comparison with patients without excess weight (BMI < 25 kg/m2). In particular, the excess weight increased the Mex-SLEDAI score (β coefficient = 1.82; R2 = 0.05; p = 0.005). Also, the SLE patients presented a high prevalence (%) of deficient consumption (cut-off point: <67% of dietary adequacy) of vitamin E (100%), iodine (96%), omega 3 (93.44%), biotin (78%), vitamin K (73.33%), iron (67%), vitamin D (63.3%), potassium (59%), folic acid (56.67%), pantothenic acid (43.3%), vitamin A (41.67%) and zinc (32%). In conclusion, in SLE patients the excess weight was associated with increased clinical activity and to the presence of deficiencies in some essential nutrients ingested.
