Abstract
Dairy and non-dairy (plant-based) alternatives are promoted as an essential component of a healthy diet. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the range of dairy milks and plant-based milk alternatives in supermarkets in Australia and Singapore, and to explore nutritional differences within the category, and between countries. Product information was collected in store from packaging. Products were sorted into dairy milks and plant-based milk alternatives, and further categorised as (i) breakfast drinks (12 % of products); (ii) plain milks (62 %); or (iii) flavoured milks (26 %). The nutrient profiles of products were tested for differences using Kruskal Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Flavoured products contained almost double the median sugar content of plain products (8.3 g v. 4.6 g, p = 0.005). Two-thirds of the product range were dairy milks, which contained nearly four times the median saturated fat content (1.1 g v. 0.3 v, p < 0.0001) and more than double the amount of sugar (5.1 g v. 2.6 g, p < 0.0001) of plant-based milk alternatives, but three times more protein (3.3 g v. 1.0 g, p < 0.0001). Between countries, generally, calcium contents were similar across products, likely due to fortification of plant-based milk alternatives. Compared to Singapore, dairy milk and plant-based milk alternative products sold in Australia were generally higher in energy, protein and fat, but lower in carbohydrate content. Food supply differences between Singapore and Australia may be cultural and have nutritional implications.

Abstract
At present, energy surplus and micronutrient deficiency coexist in preschool children in China. The low intake of dairy products accompanied by an increased consumption of soft drinks in this age group reveals some of the reasons for this phenomenon. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the improvement of key micronutrients in preschool children by quantifying the dietary nutritional gap before and after simulating the use of dairy products instead of equal amounts of soft drinks. In the cross-sectional dietary intake survey of infants and young children in China (2018-2019), 676 preschool children aged 3-6 years were randomly selected. Four days of dietary data were collected through an online diary for simulation. The individual intake of soft drinks was substituted at a corresponding volume by soymilk, cow's milk, or formulated milk powder for preschool children (FMP-PSC). In these three models, the simulated nutrient intake and nutrient inadequacy or surplus were compared with the actual baseline data of the survey. The results of this study indicated that all three models made the nutrient intakes of this group more in line with the recommendations. For the whole population, the replacement of soymilk improved the intake of zinc (from 4.80 to 4.85 mg/d), potassium (from 824.26 to 836.82 mg/d), vitamin A (from 211.57 to 213.92 μg retinol activity equivalent/d), and vitamin B9 (from 115.94 to 122.79 μg dietary folate equivalent/d); the simulation of cow's milk improved the intake of calcium (from 311.82 to 330.85 mg/d), zinc (from 4.80 to 4.87 mg/d), potassium (from 824.26 to 833.62 mg/d), vitamin A (from 211.57 to 215.12 μg retinol activity equivalent/d), vitamin B2 (from 0.53 to 0.54 mg/d), and vitamin B12 (from 1.63 to 1.67 μg/d); and the substitution of FMP-PSC improved the intake of calcium (from 311.82 to 332.32 mg/d), iron (from 9.91 to 9.36 mg/d), zinc (from 4.80 to 4.96 mg/d), potassium (from 824.26 to 828.71 mg/d), vitamin A (from 211.57 to 217.93 μg retinol activity equivalent/d), vitamin B2 (from 0.53 to 0.54 mg/d), vitamin B9 (from 115.94 to 118.80 μg RA dietary folate equivalent/d), and vitamin B12 (from 1.63 to 1.70 μg/d). Therefore, correct nutritional information should be provided to parents and preschool children. In addition to changing the consumption behavior of soft drinks, it is also necessary to have a diversified and balanced diet. When necessary, the use of food ingredients or nutritional fortifiers can be encouraged.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To investigate the association between soft drinks, tea and coffee consumption, and risk of fracture in the China Health and Nutrition Survey. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study with multi-stage random cluster sampling was conducted in nine Chinese provinces in 2004, 2006, 2009 and 2011. A total of 36,740 participants were included the data analyses. Self-administered questionnaires and physical examinations provided data on beverages consumption, fracture history, and other potential risk factors. Binary logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) adjusted for potentially confounding variables. RESULTS The prevalence of fracture increased over the 7-year period of the surveys, with 1833 (5.3%) participants reporting a fracture history. Soft drink consumption increased over this time period, and tea consumption was relatively stable, whereas coffee consumption tended to increase sharply. Consumers of soft drinks ≥ 3 times/week (versus never) had a higher risk of fracture (OR = 1.86, 95% CI = 1.43-2.32, p < 0.001, p for trend = 0.039). Consumers of tea ≥ 5 cups/day (versus never) also had a higher risk of fracture (OR = 1.21, 95% CI = 1.09-1.45, p = 0.028, p for trend < 0.001). Similarly, consumers of coffee ≥ 2 cups/day (versus never) had a higher risk of fracture (OR = 1.84, 95% CI = 1.01-3.34, p = 0.045, p for trend = 0.002). Subgroup analyses by gender suggested that coffee consumption increased risk of fracture in females (OR = 1.84, 95% CI = 1.32-2.63, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that high consumption of soft drinks, tea and coffee is associated with an increased risk of fracture in the Chinese population. Which has important public health implications given the widespread consumption of these beverages.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Multiple studies have independently investigated the associations of the consumption of individual beverage types and specific plasma biomarkers with the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, as individuals do not consume single beverage types exclusively and plasma biomarkers do not act in isolation, it remains unclear how patterns of beverage consumption and plasma biomarker networks associate both with each other and T2D risk. OBJECTIVES We aimed to elucidate potential dietary determinants of T2D risk by defining a model that describes habitual beverage consumption profiles in relation to identified networks of circulating plasma biomarkers. METHODS This study included 1,461 case and 1,568 control participants from case-control studies of T2D nested within the Nurses' Health Study. Participants completed validated semiquantitative food frequency questionnaires that assessed habitual beverage consumption, and they provided blood samples from which 27 plasma biomarkers of cardiometabolic risk were identified. Common exploratory factor analysis (EFA) identified factors that separately described beverage consumption profiles and biomarker networks. Multivariable-adjusted regression elucidated the relationships between beverage and biomarker factors and T2D risk. RESULTS EFA revealed five factors describing unique beverage consumption profiles and seven factors describing biomarker networks. The factor describing alcoholic beverage consumption was associated with a reduced risk of T2D (odds ratio [OR]: 0.50 [0.40, 0.64], P<0.001) mediated, in part, by the factor describing increased concentrations of adiponectin biomarkers (19.9% [12.0, 31.1] P = 0.004). The factor describing low-calorie sweetened beverage (LCSBs) consumption was associated with an increased risk of T2D (OR: 1.33 [1.03, 1.72], P = 0.021), and the factor describing lower concentrations of insulin-like growth factor binding proteins 1 and 2, and soluble leptin receptor, and increased leptin concentrations (P = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS Moderate alcohol consumption was associated with reduced T2D risk, mediated in part by increased circulating adiponectin. LCSB consumption was associated with both increased T2D risk and perturbed insulin-like growth factor and leptin signaling.

Abstract
The consumption of sugar and non-nutritive sweeteners has been associated with poor health outcomes. The aim of this paper was to provide a comparison of the range of sweetened or flavoured beverages between two high-income countries in the Asia-Pacific region: Australia and Singapore. Following the FoodTrackTM methodology, nutrition, labelling, and price data were collected from major Australian and Singaporean supermarket chains and convenience stores. The nutrient profiles of products were tested for differences using Kruskal−Wallis and Mann−Whitney U tests. The greatest number of products collected in Australia were from the ‘carbonated beverages’ category (n = 215, 40%), and in Singapore the greatest number of products were from the ‘tea and coffee ready-to-drink’ category (n = 182, 35%). There were more calorically sweetened beverages in Singapore compared with Australia (n = 462/517 vs. n = 374/531, p < 0.001). For calorically sweetened products, the median energy of Singaporean products was significantly higher than Australian products (134 kJ vs. 120 kJ per 100 mL, p = 0.009). In Australia, 52% of sweetened or flavoured beverages displayed a front-of-pack nutrient signposting logo, compared with 34% of sweetened or flavoured beverages in Singapore. These findings also indicate that the consumption of just one serving of calorically sweetened carbonated beverages or energy drinks would exceed the WHO maximum daily free sugar recommendations.

Prospective association of family members' sugar-sweetened beverages intake with children's sugar-sweetened beverages consumption in China. Eur J Nutr 2023; 62:175-184. Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to investigate whether parental and siblings' sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) intake had prospective impact on children's SSB consumption, and the potential sex difference in these associations. METHODS This study included a total of 904 children and their parents enrolled from 2004 to 2011 China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) cohort study. SSB consumption information was estimated using a short dietary questionnaire and total energy intake was assessed with three-day 24-h dietary assessments at recruitment and follow-up surveys. Multivariate logistic or linear regression analyses were used to assess the association for SSB consumption between parents, siblings and children after adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI) z-score, household income and parental educational level. RESULTS In this study, a majority (87.6%) of children consumed SSB. Among them, the median consumption of SSB was 70.3 ml/day per capita and 205.4 ml/day per consumer. Parental SSB consumption was relevant to children's SSB consumption, and this association was more pronounced in boys than in girls. Meanwhile, fathers seemed to have a stronger impact on whether children consume SSB than mothers which was reflected by lower P and higher OR. Additionally, children's SSB intake was prospectively associated with their older siblings' SSB consumption (P for trend < 0.03). CONCLUSIONS Parental and older siblings' SSB consumption was relevant to children's SSB intake. Particularly, boys were more susceptible to parental impact than girls, and fathers seemed to have a greater influence on children than mothers.

Abstract
Studies have shown that young adults follow less structured eating patterns compared with older cohorts. This may have implications for dietary assessment methods which rely on memory and structured meal patterns. Our aim was to describe the intra-individual variation of eating times in young adults aged 18−30 years. Participants (n = 41) wore an Autographer camera that captured first-person perspective images every 30 s for three consecutive days. All images were timestamped and those showing food consumption were used to extract data such as the timing of the first and last eating occasions (EOs), number of EOs per day, and length of eating window. Intra-individual variability was calculated from these data using composite phase deviation (CPD) and coefficient of variation (CV). The number of individuals with high or very high variability was 28 and 18 for timing of first and last EOs, respectively (CPD > 1.70), and 27 and 17 for number of EOs and eating window, respectively (CV > 20%). In this sample of young adults, the lack of regularity in eating patterns should be considered when selecting a dietary assessment method.

Abstract
As food intake patterns become less structured, different methods of dietary assessment may be required to capture frequently omitted snacks, smaller meals, and the time of day when they are consumed. Incorporating sensors that passively and objectively detect eating behavior may assist in capturing these eating occasions into dietary assessment methods. The aim of this study was to identify and collate sensor-based technologies that are feasible for dietitians to use to assist with performing dietary assessments in real-world practice settings. A scoping review was conducted using the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) framework. Studies were included if they were published between January 2016 and December 2021 and evaluated the performance of sensor-based devices for identifying and recording the time of food intake. Devices from included studies were further evaluated against a set of feasibility criteria to determine whether they could potentially be used to assist dietitians in conducting dietary assessments. The feasibility criteria were, in brief, consisting of an accuracy ≥80%; tested in settings where subjects were free to choose their own foods and activities; social acceptability and comfort; a long battery life; and a relatively rapid detection of an eating episode. Fifty-four studies describing 53 unique devices and 4 device combinations worn on the wrist (n = 18), head (n = 16), neck (n = 9), and other locations (n = 14) were included. Whilst none of the devices strictly met all feasibility criteria currently, continuous refinement and testing of device software and hardware are likely given the rapidly changing nature of this emerging field. The main reasons devices failed to meet the feasibility criteria were: an insufficient or lack of reporting on battery life (91%), the use of a limited number of foods and behaviors to evaluate device performance (63%), and the device being socially unacceptable or uncomfortable to wear for long durations (46%). Until sensor-based dietary assessment tools have been designed into more inconspicuous prototypes and are able to detect most food and beverage consumption throughout the day, their use will not be feasible for dietitians in practice settings.

Abstract
Beverages contribute significantly to dietary intake. Research exploring the impact of beverage types on nutrient intake for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is limited. A secondary analysis of the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey 2012–2013 (n = 4109) was undertaken. The daily intake, percentage of consumers, and contribution to total nutrient intake was estimated for 12 beverage categories. Beverage intake contributed to 17.4% of total energy, 27.0% of total calcium, 26.3% of total vitamin C, and 46.6% of total sugar intake. The most frequently consumed beverage categories for children (aged 2 to 18 years) were water, fruit juice/drinks, soft drinks, and cordial; and for adults, water, tea, coffee and soft drinks. The primary sources of beverages with added sugar were fruit juice/drinks (for children), tea (for people living remotely), coffee (for adults in metropolitan/regional areas) and soft drinks (for everyone). Actions to modify beverage intake to improve health should maintain the positive nutrient attributes of beverage intake. This analysis of a large-scale national dietary survey provides benchmarking of beverage intake to support program and policy development to modify intake where this is determined as a priority by the community.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Overconsumption of energy-dense, nutrient-poor "discretionary" foods and beverages can indicate poor diet quality, which is a risk factor for obesity and chronic disease. With 60% of Australians exceeding the recommended intake of discretionary foods, there is a need for interventions to reduce their consumption. OBJECTIVE The objective was to model the impact of 26 specific scenarios to limit discretionary food intake on energy and nutrient intake. DESIGN The scenario modeling analysis was based on reduction strategies targeting portion size, frequency, or variety of discretionary food and beverage items consumed. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING Data from 12,153 respondents aged 2 to 85 years from the 2011-12 Australian National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey were used. OUTCOME MEASURES The outcome measures were change in servings of discretionary foods and key nutrients (energy, total fat, saturated fat, sugar, alcohol, sodium, trans fat) for the population, and by sex, age group, weight status, and socioeconomic status. STATISTICAL ANALYSES PERFORMED Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis were conducted. RESULTS Scenarios reduced total energy intake by up to 26% across the population as a whole. The removal of discretionary foods (not beverages) resulted in the greatest reduction in servings and energy (74.8% and 25.6%, respectively), followed by the removal of discretionary items in portions greater than 143 kcal (59.1% and 24.3%) and not consuming discretionary items at main meals (51.2% and 17.8%). Targeting single categories of discretionary foods reduced energy intake by an average of 5.6% for the removal of cakes and biscuits, 4.4% for alcohol, and 3.9% for sugar-sweetened beverages. Strategies reduced total fat, saturated fat, and sugar by up to 35%, 38%, and 40% respectively. CONCLUSIONS Strategies that are specific to discretionary food and beverage intake targeting reductions in portion size, frequency, or variety have the potential to reduce energy intake and improve diet quality. These findings have implications for designing interventions with potential to tailor messages to current dietary habits. Exploration of how these strategies could be effectively implemented will be the focus of further research.

Abstract
Lowering intake of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) is being advocated as an obesity prevention strategy in Australia. The purpose of this study was to extend on previous reports of trends in national volume sales of SSBs. Data were extracted from commercially available datasets of beverage sales (AC Nielsen (1997–2011) and IRI Australia (2009–2018)). Linear regression was used to examine trends for the period 1997 to 2018. Per capita attribution of volume sales and sugar contribution was estimated by dividing by the Australian resident population for the relevant year. Per capita volume sales of SSBs fell 27%, from 83L/person to 61L/person, largely driven by declining sales of sugar-sweetened carbonated soft drinks (76 to 45L/person). Volume sales of non-SSB increased, from 48 to 88L/person, the largest contributor being pure unflavoured still waters (6 to 48L/person). Volume sales of non-SSBs have exceeded those of SSBs since 2015. The yearly contribution of SSBs to the sugar content of the national diet declined from 9.0 to 6.4kg/person. Major, long-term shifts are occurring in the market for non-alcoholic, water-based beverages in Australia, notably a fall in per capita volume sales of SSBs and an increase in volume sales of water. Both trends are consistent with obesity prevention strategies.
