Abstract
STUDY QUESTION Is there a relationship between serum uric acid and fructose levels in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)? SUMMARY ANSWER Elevated serum uric acid levels in women with PCOS positively correlate with serum fructose levels, and elevated serum fructose levels are an independent risk factor for hyperuricemia in women with PCOS. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Our previous study suggested a link between elevated serum fructose levels and PCOS. Fructose is unique as it generates uric acid during metabolism, and high uric acid levels are associated with metabolic disorders and an increased risk of anovulation. However, the relationship between serum uric acid and fructose levels in women with PCOS remains unclear. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION In a case-control study of 774 women (482 controls and 292 patients with PCOS) between May and October 2020 at the Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University, the relationship between uric acid and fructose levels in women with PCOS was examined. Participants were divided into subgroups based on various factors, including BMI, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, and hyperuricemia. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS Serum uric acid concentrations were measured using enzymatic assays, and serum fructose levels were determined using a fluorescent enzyme immunoassay. Dietary fructose data were collected through a validated food-frequency questionnaire of 81 food items. We applied restricted cubic splines to a flexibly model and visualized the linear/nonlinear relationships between serum uric acid and fructose levels in PCOS. Multivariate logistic analysis was executed to assess the association between serum fructose levels and hyperuricemia in PCOS. Human granulosa cell and oocyte mRNA profile sequencing data were downloaded for mapping uric acid and fructose metabolism genes in PCOS. Further downstream analyses, including Gene Ontology, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis, and protein-protein interactions were then carried out on the differentially expressed genes (DEGs). The correlation between uric acid and fructose metabolism genes was calculated using the Pearson correlation coefficient. The GeneCards database was used to identify DEGs related to uric acid and fructose metabolism in PCOS, and then several DEGs were confirmed by quantitative real-time PCR. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE Both serum fructose and uric acid levels were significantly increased in women with PCOS compared with the control women (P < 0.001), and there was no statistically significant difference in dietary fructose intake between PCOS and controls, regardless of metabolic status. There was a positive linear correlation between serum uric acid and fructose levels in women with PCOS (Poverall < 0.001, Pnon-linear = 0.30). In contrast, no correlation was found in control women (Poverall = 0.712, Pnon-linear = 0.43). Additionally, a non-linear association was observed in the obese subgroup of patients with PCOS (Poverall < 0.001, Pnon-linear = 0.02). Serum uric acid levels were linearly and positively associated with serum fructose levels in patients with PCOS with insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome. Furthermore, even after adjusting for confounding factors, elevated serum fructose levels were an independent risk factor for hyperuricemia in patients with PCOS (P = 0.001; OR, 1.380; 95% CI, 1.207-1.577). There were 28 uric acid and 25 fructose metabolism genes which showed a significant correlation in PCOS. Seven upregulated genes (CAT, CRP, CCL2, TNF, MMP9, GCG, and APOB) related to uric acid and fructose metabolism in PCOS ovarian granulosa cells were ultimately successfully validated using quantitative real-time PCR. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION Due to limited conditions, more possible covariates (such as smoking and ethnicity) were not included, and the underlying molecular mechanism between fructose and uric acid levels in women with PCOS remains to be further investigated. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS The results of this study and our previous research indicate that the high uric acid status of PCOS may be mediated by fructose metabolism disorders, highlighting the importance of analyzing fructose metabolism, and especially its metabolic byproduct uric acid, during the clinical diagnosis of PCOS. These results suggest the adverse effects of high uric acid in PCOS, and the importance of taking early interventions regarding uric acid levels to reduce the occurrence and development of further clinical signs, such as metabolic disorders in women with PCOS. Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder syndrome with an incidence of 6% to 10% in women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS not only exhibit abnormal follicular development and fertility disorders, but also have a greater tendency to develop anxiety and depression. Our aim was to evaluate the ability of inflammatory factors in follicular fluid to predict embryonic developmental potential and pregnancy outcome and to construct a machine learning model that can predict IVF pregnancy outcomes based on indicators such as basic sex hormones, embryonic morphology, the follicular microenvironment, and negative emotion. In this study, inflammatory factors (CRP, IL-6, and TNF-α) in follicular fluid samples obtained from 225 PCOS and 225 non-PCOS women were detected via ELISA. For patients with PCOS, the levels of CRP and IL-6 in the follicular fluid in the pregnant group were significantly lower than those in the nonpregnant group. For non-patients with PCOS, only the level of IL-6 in the follicular fluid was significantly lower in the pregnant group than in the nonpregnant group. In addition, for both PCOS and non-patients with PCOS, compared with those in the pregnant group, patients in the nonpregnant group showed more pronounced signs of anxiety and depression. Finally, the factors that were significantly different between the two subgroups (pregnancy and nonpregnancy) of patients with or without PCOS were identified by an independent sample t test first and further analysed by multilayer perceptron (MLP) and random forest (RF) models to distinguish the two clinical pregnancy outcomes according to the classification function. The accuracy of the RF model in predicting pregnancy outcomes in patients with or without PCOS was 95.6% and 91.1%, respectively. The RF model is more suitable than the MLP model for predicting pregnancy outcomes in IVF patients. This study not only identified inflammatory factors that can affect embryonic development and assessed the anxiety and depression tendencies of PCOS patients, but also constructed an AI model that predict pregnancy outcomes through machine learning methods, which is a beneficial clinical tool.

Abstract
Objective Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent and frequently encountered gynecological disorder. Its high variability and the complexities associated with its management often lead to psychological stress in affected women, manifesting in symptoms of depression. Embracing a healthy lifestyle is fundamental in PCOS treatment. Consistent adherence to a healthy lifestyle not only aids in improving PCOS symptoms but also plays a role in enhancing mental well-being. However, there is currently limited research examining the extent of depression, its prevalence, and its correlation with lifestyle among individuals with PCOS. Therefore, this study aims to explore the impact of lifestyle factors on the depressive state of individuals with PCOS. Methods This cross-sectional study gathered data from 411 individuals with PCOS at a comprehensive hospital in Henan, China. Depression status was assessed using the Hamilton Depression Scale, and demographic information as well as lifestyle habits were simultaneously collected. Univariate and multivariate analyses using logistic regression were conducted to identify risk factors associated with the depressive state in PCOS. Results Among the surveyed 411 individuals with PCOS, approximately 49.4% exhibited symptoms of depression, with 83.7% experiencing mild depressive symptoms. A disease duration of 1-3 years, the presence of acne, and unhealthy lifestyle factors such as high-fat diet, staying up late, lack of exercise, and mental stress emerged as significant risk factors for the onset of depressive symptoms. Conclusion Depressive symptoms in individuals with PCOS are predominantly mild. The risk of comorbid depression in PCOS is associated with the presence of acne, frequent high-fat diet, regular staying up late, lack of exercise, and mental stress.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) refers to an endocrine disorder syndrome that are correlated with multiple organs and systems. PCOS has an effect on women at all stages of their lives, and it has an incidence nearly ranging from 6% to 20% worldwide. Mitochondrial dysfunctions (e.g., oxidative stress, dynamic imbalance, and abnormal quality control system) have been identified in patients and animal models of PCOS, and the above processes may play a certain role in the development of PCOS and its associated complications. However, their specific pathogenic roles should be investigated in depth. In this review, recent studies on the mechanisms of action of mitochondrial dysfunction in PCOS and its associated clinical manifestations are summarized from the perspective of tissues and organs, and some studies on the treatment of the disease by improving mitochondrial function are reviewed to highlight key role of mitochondrial dysfunction in this syndrome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common reproductive-endocrine condition in premenopausal women. Troxerutin, a common clinical anti-coagulant agent, was shown to work as a strong IL-22 boosting agent counteracting the hyperactivated gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons and heightened GnRH release, the neuroendocrine origin of PCOS with unknown mechanism in rats. Exploring the off-label use of troxerutin medication for PCOS is thus sorely needed. METHODS Serum IL-22 content and hypothalamic IL-22 protein were detected. Inflammatory factor levels in hypothalamo-pituitary were evaluated. Immunofluorescence staining was employed to determine the activation and M1/M2-prone polarization of microglia in arcuate hypothalamus and median eminence. RNA-sequencing and transcriptome analysis were applied to explore the potential driver of microglia M2-polarization in response to IL-22 bolstering effect. The function of microglial IL-22/IL-22R1/IRF3 system was further verified using in vivo knockdown of IL-22R1 and a potent IRF3 inhibitor in BV2 microglial cell lines in vitro. RESULTS Troxerutin augmented serum IL-22 content, and its consequent spillover into the hypothalamus led to the direct activation of IL-22R1/IRF3 system on microglia, thereby promoted microglia M2 polarization in arcuate hypothalamus and median eminence, dampened hypothalamic neuroinflammation, inhibited hyperactive GnRH and rescued a breadth of PCOS-like traits in dihydrotestosterone (DHT) rats. The salutary effects of troxerutin treatment on hypothalamic neuroinflammation, microglial M1/2 polarization, GnRH secretion and numerous PCOS-like features were blocked by in vivo knockdown of IL-22R1. Moreover, evidence in vitro illustrated that IL-22 supplement to BV-2 microglia cell lines promoted M2 polarization, overproduction of anti-inflammatory marker and limitation of pro-inflammatory factors, whereas these IL-22 effects were blunted by geldanamycin, a potent IRF3 inhibitor. CONCLUSION Here, the present study reported the potential off-label use of troxerutin medication, a common clinical anti-coagulant agent and an endogenous IL-22 enhancer, for multiple purposes in PCOS. The rational underlying the application of troxerutin as a therapeutic choice in PCOS derived from its activity as an IL-22 memetic agent targeting the neuro-endocrine origin of PCOS, and its promotive impact on microglia M2 polarization via activating microglial IL-22R1/IRF3 system in the arcuate hypothalamus and median eminence of DHT female rats.

Abstract
Obesity is a complex, chronic disease requiring a multidisciplinary approach to its management. In clinical practice, body mass index and waist-related measurements can be used for obesity screening. The estimated prevalence of obesity among adults worldwide is 12%. With the expected further increase in overall obesity prevalence, clinicians will increasingly be managing patients with obesity. Energy balance is regulated by a complex neurohumoral system that involves the central nervous system and circulating mediators, among which leptin is the most studied. The functioning of these systems is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Obesity generally occurs when a genetically predisposed individual lives in an obesogenic environment for a long period. Cardiologists are deeply involved in evaluating patients with obesity. Cardiovascular risk profile is one of the most important items to be quantified to understand the health risk due to obesity and the clinical benefit that a single patient can obtain with weight loss. At the individual level, appropriate patient involvement, the detection of potential obesity causes, and a multidisciplinary approach are tools that can improve clinical outcomes. In the near future, we will probably have new pharmacological tools at our disposal that will facilitate achieving and maintaining weight loss. However, pharmacological treatment alone cannot cure such a complex disease. The aim of this paper is to summarize some key points of this field, such as obesity definition and measurement tools, its epidemiology, the main mechanisms underlying energy homeostasis, health consequences of obesity with a focus on cardiovascular diseases and the obesity paradox.Level of evidence V: report of expert committees.

Abstract
There are many gynecological diseases, among which breast cancer (BC), cervical cancer (CC), endometriosis (EMs), and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are common and difficult to cure. Stem cells (SCs) are a focus of regenerative medicine. They are commonly used to treat organ damage and difficult diseases because of their potential for self-renewal and multidirectional differentiation. SCs are also commonly used for difficult-to-treat gynecological diseases because of their strong directional differentiation ability with unlimited possibilities, their tendency to adhere to the diseased tissue site, and their use as carriers for drug delivery. SCs can produce exosomes in a paracrine manner. Exosomes can be produced in large quantities and have the advantage of easy storage. Their safety and efficacy are superior to those of SCs, which have considerable potential in gynecological treatment, such as inhibiting endometrial senescence, promoting vascular reconstruction, and improving anti-inflammatory and immune functions. In this paper, we review the mechanisms of the regenerative and anti-inflammatory capacity of SCs and exosomes in incurable gynecological diseases and the current progress in their application in genetic engineering to provide a foundation for further research.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder related to psychological distress. However, the mechanism underlying increased prevalence of depression in PCOS remained unclear. This study aimed to explore the unique transcriptional landscape of ovary and offered a platform to explore the mechanism of PCOS, as well as the influences caused by depression. The PCOS rat model was established by letrozole whereas PCOS rat model with depression was established by letrozole combined with chronic unpredicted mild stress (CUMS). Then single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-Seq) was applied to analyze the transcriptional features of rat ovaries. Granulosa cells (GCs) and fibroblasts (Fibros) accounted for the top two clusters of total 12 cell types. There were nine clusters in GCs, related to inflammatory response, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and steroidogenesis. The expression of differentially expressed genes (DEG) Hes1 was higher in PCOS and PCOS + CUMS groups, exhibiting enhanced expression by pseudotime and positively related to inflammation. Pseudotemporal analysis revealed that inflammation contributed to the different GCs distributions. Moreover, analysis of DEGs and gene ontology (GO) function enrichment revealed CUMS aggravated inflammation in PCOS GCs possibly via interferon signaling pathway. In theca cells (TCs), nine clusters were observed and some of them were relevant to inflammation, ER stress, and lipid metabolism. DEGs Ass1, Insl3, and Ifi27 were positively related to Cyp17a1, and Ces1d might contribute to the different trajectory of TCs. Subsequent scRNA-seq revealed a signature profile of endothelial cells (ECs) and Fibros, which suggest that inflammation-induced damage of ECs and Fibro, further exacerbated by CUMS. Finally, analysis of T cells and mononuclear phagocytes (MPs) revealed the existence of immune dysfunction, among which interferon signaling played a critical role. These findings provided more knowledge for a better understanding PCOS from the view of inflammation and identified new biomarkers and targets for the treatment of PCOS with psychological diseases.NEW & NOTEWORTHY In this study, we mapped the landscape of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) ovary with rat model induced by letrozole and provided a novel insight into the molecular mechanism of PCOS accompanied by chronic unpredicted mild stress (CUMS) at single-cell transcriptomic level. These observations highlight the importance of inflammation in the pathogenesis of PCOS, which might also be the bridge between PCOS and psychological diseases.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the concomitant incidence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), both in terms of incidence, etiology, and clinical consequences. PCOS patients suffering from autoimmune thyroid diseases show insulin resistance, impaired glucose tolerance, weight gain, and metabolic and reproductive complications. Studies have shown that chronic stress and its consequence, i.e. oxidative stress, play an important role in the pathomechanism of both disorders. It has also been shown that long-term exposure to stress triggers biological mechanisms, in particular related to the regulation of the inflammatory cascade, which plays a key role in autoimmune diseases. The paper is a review of the literature on the role of chronic stress, oxidative stress, and immune processes in the pathogenesis of HT and PCOS. In addition, the review is a source of knowledge about the treatment of these diseases, and in particular the use of antioxidants in therapeutic management.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is increasingly being characterized as an evolutionary mismatch disorder that presents with a complex mixture of metabolic and endocrine symptoms. The Evolutionary Model proposes that PCOS arises from a collection of inherited polymorphisms that have been consistently demonstrated in a variety of ethnic groups and races. In utero developmental programming of susceptible genomic variants are thought to predispose the offspring to develop PCOS. Postnatal exposure to lifestyle and environmental risk factors results in epigenetic activation of developmentally programmed genes and disturbance of the hallmarks of health. The resulting pathophysiological changes represent the consequences of poor-quality diet, sedentary behaviour, endocrine disrupting chemicals, stress, circadian disruption, and other lifestyle factors. Emerging evidence suggests that lifestyle-induced gastrointestinal dysbiosis plays a central role in the pathogenesis of PCOS. Lifestyle and environmental exposures initiate changes that result in disturbance of the gastrointestinal microbiome (dysbiosis), immune dysregulation (chronic inflammation), altered metabolism (insulin resistance), endocrine and reproductive imbalance (hyperandrogenism), and central nervous system dysfunction (neuroendocrine and autonomic nervous system). PCOS can be a progressive metabolic condition that leads to obesity, gestational diabetes, type two diabetes, metabolic-associated fatty liver disease, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. This review explores the mechanisms that underpin the evolutionary mismatch between ancient survival pathways and contemporary lifestyle factors involved in the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of PCOS.

Abstract
Hypothalamic inflammation is a pathophysiological basis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), while overactivated and/or excess M1 polarized microglia are considered to be the main reason for the occurrence of hypothalamic inflammation. Therefore, in vitro and in vivo experiments were performed to assess the relationships between microglia‑mediated inflammatory reactions and endocrine functions in the PCOS hypothalamus. The expression of gonadotropin‑releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor (GnRHR) was demonstrated in hypothalamic microglia, and it was found that low concentration, GnRH agonist, leuprolide acetate accelerated the expression of M2 polarization marker CD206, while high concentration leuprolide acetate increased the expression of M1 polarization marker CD86 in vitro. Furthermore, aerobic exercise not only reduced the levels of serum testosterone, luteinizing hormone and GnRH and the amount of overactivated microglia, but also increased the number of M2 microglia in the hypothalamus of letrozole‑induced PCOS rats. In combination, these results not only demonstrated the expression of GnRHR in hypothalamic microglia, but also demonstrated that GnRH can induce microglial polarization, while aerobic exercise may improve the microglia‑mediated inflammatory reaction by reducing the expression of GnRHR in the hypothalamic microglia of PCOS rats.

Abstract
Objectives Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder associated with insulin resistance, hyperandrogenism, and sub-infertility. Virgin coconut oil (VCO) has been reported to have health benefits, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and antiviral properties. This study investigated the effects of dietary VCO supplementation on memory and cognitive impairment in female rats with letrozole induced PCOS. Methods Thirty female rats were randomly divided into five groups. All rats except controls were treated with letrozole for 21 days to induce PCOS and were subsequently treated for 14 days with 10% VCO, clomiphene (CLO), or VCO + CLO. Three neurobehavioral tests were conducted: elevated plus maze, Y maze, and novel object recognition tests. Results Our results indicated statistically elevated serum concentrations of sex hormones in rats with PCOS, compared with the control and treated groups. In addition, all treated groups showed significant reversal of the low serum concentrations of catalase and down-regulated gene expression of Nrf2 in the hippocampus seen in the PCOS rats. In addition, gene expression of acetylcholine esterase was up-regulated in PCOS rats, and was statistically reverted in the VCO treated groups. Conclusion Anxiety-like behavior and impaired short-term memory were observed in PCOS rats; however, VCO supplementation reversed these effects by modulating the gene expression of Nrf2 and AchE.

Abstract
Background There is an association between inflammatory factors and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and most of women with PCOS experience the symptoms of hirsutism. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of obesity in PCOS occurrence, which is linked with inflammation and hirsutism. Methods This study was designed as a case-control research. It was performed on 102 women with PCOS and 102 healthy women as controls who were age-matched. Serum concentrations of testosterone, estradiol (E2), IL-1, IL-6, high-sensitivity c-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and aromatase activity were measured in blood samples. Statistical tests including unpaired t-tests, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis, Spearman's correlation, and Chi-square tests were used for data analysis. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05. Results A significant difference was found between hs-CRP, IL-1, and IL-6 in PCOS patients and healthy individuals (p<0.001). Aromatase activity was markedly lower in PCOS cases. The serum level of IL-1 (p=0.392) and IL-6 (p=0.764) was not different between overweight and normal weight women. In both studied groups (case and control), hirsutism frequency was markedly higher in individuals with BMI ≥25 kg/m 2 (p<0.05). Inflammatory factors significantly affected the PCOS group (p<0.05). However, logistic regression showed that hs-CRP increment is more effective on increasing the risk of PCOS (OR: 6.324, p<0.001). Conclusion In this study, hs-CRP, IL-1, and IL-6 levels increased in all PCOS women. Although the incidence of hirsutism in PCOS is associated with obesity, in PCOS pathogenesis, only IL-1 and IL-6 were independent of BMI.

Abstract
PURPOSE Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex reproductive event that is delineated by endocrine/metabolic disorders. Alteration of kisspeptin status in the hypothalamus and adipose tissue is critical to increased endocrine/metabolic derangements in PCOS individuals, aggravating the clinical manifestation of PCOS and its complications. Short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are crucial modulators of metabolic homeostasis. However, the role of SCFAs, particularly acetate on hypothalamic-adipose kisspeptin status (HAKS) in PCOS model is unknown. The present study hypothesized acetate as a key player in restoration of deranged HAKS, associated with experimental PCOS model. METHODS Three groups (n = 6/group) of female Wistar rats (120-150 g) were used. The groups were treated (po) for 21 days with vehicle, letrozole (1 mg/kg) with/without acetate (200 mg/kg) respectively. RESULTS Letrozole-treated animals had impaired glucose homeostasis, elevated testosterone, leptin and LH/FSH ratio and decreased GnRH and adiponectin with ovarian tissues revealing degenerated follicles and disrupted morphology. These animals also showed increased concentration of hypothalamic triglyceride (TG)/total cholesterol (TC), free fatty acid (FFA), and decreased concentration of TG/TC/FFA in visceral adipose tissue (VAT) with an increase in hypothalamic and VAT malondialdehyde, NF-κB/TNF-α and decreased glutathione/G6PD and hypothalamic but not VAT kisspeptin. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed the expression of NLRP3 inflammasome in the hypothalamus and VAT and all these changes were attenuated by acetate. CONCLUSIONS Altogether, the present results demonstrate that PCOS is characterized with hypothalamic-adipose inflammation, associated with immunohistochemical expression of NLRP3 with significant alteration of hypothalamic but not adipose kisspeptin. The results suggest that acetate restores kisspeptin status in PCOS animals. This beneficial effect is accompanied by repressed NLRP3 immunoreactivity.

Abstract
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a combination of many symptoms resulting from hormonal imbalance, metabolic syndromes, hyperandrogenism, and anovulation. This paper explores the various etiopathology and mechanisms causing depression in women with PCOS and how to prevent and treat PCOS-induced depression. Women with PCOS present with multiple symptoms such as acne, hirsutism, androgenic alopecia, obesity, menstrual irregularities, infertility, and mood disturbances like depression and anxiety. Depression is the most common psychological problem faced by women with PCOS. The various pathophysiological mechanisms that lead to depression are Insulin resistance, disturbance in the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis, hyperandrogenism and its clinical presentation, obesity, and infertility. Lifestyle modifications such as dietary changes and weight loss play a significant role in preventing and managing PCOS-induced depression. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and lifestyle modification have shown to be effective measures for weight loss in obese women with PCOS. Antidepressants also play a part in treating PCOS-induced depression. Over the last decade, the number of cases of depression in women with PCOS has increased. This paper provides detailed data on the fundamental causes of depression in women with PCOS to facilitate a more straightforward treatment approach.

Abstract
Recent studies have shown a rise in precocious puberty, especially in girls. At the same time, childhood obesity due to overnutrition and energy imbalance is rising too. Nutrition and fertility are currently facing major challenges in our societies, and are interconnected. Studies have shown that high-fat and/or high-glycaemic-index diet can cause hypothalamic inflammation and microglial activation. Molecular and animal studies reveal that microglial activation seems to produce and activate prostaglandins, neurotrophic factors activating GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone expressing neurons), thus initiating precocious puberty. GnRH neurons’ mechanisms of excitability are not well understood. In this review, we study the phenomenon of the rise of precocious puberty, we examine the physiology of GnRH neurons, and we review the recent literature regarding the pathophysiological mechanisms that connect diet-induced hypothalamic inflammation and diet-induced phoenixin regulation with precocious puberty.
