Abstract
CONTEXT Nut-enriched diets have a positive impact on cardiovascular risk factors, such as body mass, blood pressure, and fasting blood glucose. However, studies in individuals undergoing secondary cardiovascular prevention show controversial results. OBJECTIVE This systematic review with meta-analysis assessed the effect of nut supplementation on anthropometric, glycemic, and blood pressure indices in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, as well as the frequency of adverse events. DATA SOURCES Six databases were used for the search-PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, BVS (Biblioteca Virtual da Saude), Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov-until February 2023, with no language restrictions. DATA EXTRACTION The Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions methodology and the PICOS (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, Setting/design) strategy were used. Seven independent reviewers were involved in data extraction and resolution of disagreements. Certainty of the evidence was evaluated using the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) system. DATA ANALYSIS From 5187 records identified, 6 publications containing data referring to 5 randomized clinical trials (n = 436) were included in the final analyses. The nuts evaluated were almonds, pecans, Brazil nuts, and mixed nuts, with portions that varied between 5 g and 85 g (median: 30 g/day). The intervention period varied between 6 and 12 weeks. The nuts had no effect on fasting glucose and anthropometric indices, although the certainty of the evidence for most of these outcomes was low or very low. They also had no effect on systolic (mean difference [MD]: -1.16 mmHg [95% CI, -5.68 to 3.35], I2 = 0%-moderate certainty of evidence) or diastolic (MD: 0.10 mmHg [95% CI, -2.30 to 2.51], I2 = 0%-high certainty of evidence) blood pressure. It was not possible to aggregate data on adverse events. CONCLUSION Nut supplementation had no effect on blood pressure, fasting glucose, or anthropometric profile in the context of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Abstract
BACKGROUND To improve both human health and the health of our planet, the EAT-Lancet Commission proposed the planetary health diet (PHD). OBJECTIVE We aimed to evaluate associations of PHD with all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer-specific mortality among U.S. Black females. METHODS The Black Women's Health Study is a prospective study of self-identified U.S. Black females. In 2001, 33,824 participants free of cancer and CVD completed a validated food frequency questionnaire. PHD Index (PHDI) was calculated based on reported consumption of 15 food groups, such as whole grains, non-starchy vegetables, legumes, soy foods, added fat and trans fat, and red/processed meats. Deaths were identified through linkage to the National Death Index. Cox proportional hazards regression, stratified by age and adjusted for smoking status, body mass index, and other CVD risk factors, was used to calculate hazards ratios (HRs) for quintiles of PHDI in relation to all-cause, CVD-, and cancer-specific mortality. RESULTS During 18 years of follow-up, we identified 3537 deaths, including 779 from CVD and 1625 from cancer. Females in the quintile representing highest adherence to PHD were estimated to have a 18% reduction in risk of all-cause mortality (HR=0.82, 95% CI: 0.71, 0.94) and 26% reduction in CVD-specific mortality (HR=0.74, 95% CI: 0.55, 0.98), compared to those in the lowest quintile, with similar reductions observed for quintiles 2, 3, and 4. Among individuals under age 55, there was a significant trend of lower CVD mortality risk with higher level of adherence to PHD (p trend=0.004) and the HR for the highest versus lowest quintile was 0.43 (95% CI: 0.21, 0.87). PHDI was not associated with cancer-specific mortality. CONCLUSIONS Adherence to a diet that has been shown to benefit the planet was associated with a lower risk of mortality among Black females, primarily driven by reduction in CVD-specific mortality risk.

Abstract
The inherent physico-chemical properties of commercial konjac powders often limited their application across various industries. While existing modification techniques had produced konjac powders with diverse physical attributes, these methods were frequently associated with high costs and environmental concerns. Hence, there was a critical need to develop a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and straightforward method for modifying konjac powders. This study investigated the effects of limited moisture modification combined with drying methods on the key physical properties of konjac powders using a comprehensive set of analytical techniques. The results demonstrated that the processed konjac powders exhibited enhanced hydration properties and compressibility. Notably, moisture modification at 54.04%, combined with vacuum freeze-drying (VFD), resulted in konjac powders with a loose, porous microstructure (porosity: 75.54%) and good tablet-forming properties, significantly exceeding that of the control group. Additionally, the combination of vacuum drying (VD, 17 h) and VFD (2 h) significantly improved the water-holding capacity (154.54 g/g) and expansion force (109.97 mL/g) of the konjac powders. This study provided a sustainable, safe, economical, and easily scalable method for tailoring the physical properties of konjac powders. The modified konjac powders developed here were suitable for applications requiring high hydration properties or direct powder compression.

Abstract
Dietary fiber, found in plant-based foods, plays an essential role in human health. It is divided into two types-soluble and insoluble-both offering significant health benefits. Research has shown that increasing fiber intake can reduce the risk of various chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases (CVD), type II diabetes, obesity, colon cancer, and inflammation. These health conditions are major global challenges, making fiber consumption a key focus for disease prevention. This study reviews a range of clinical trials, cohort studies, and meta-analyses to explore how dietary fiber affects these health risks. By synthesizing data from multiple sources, we found a clear association between higher fiber intake and a lower incidence of these diseases. However, studying the effects of fiber on health presents several challenges. Variations in fiber types and bioavailability make it difficult to generalize results. Additionally, dietary intake is often self-reported, leading to potential inaccuracies in data. Many studies also lack consistency in methodology, and short study durations limit the ability to assess long-term health outcomes. These factors make it harder to draw definitive conclusions about the full range of fiber's health benefits. Despite these challenges, increasing fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes remains a highly recommended strategy for improving health and reducing the risk of chronic disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES The relationship between macronutrient intake and cognitive decline in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remains underexplored. METHODS This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the association between the protein-to-carbohydrate energy ratio (%E:P) and cognitive impairment among 192 elderly T2DM patients. Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and the Self-Administered Gerocognitive Exam (SAGE), while dietary intake data, including (%E:P), was gathered using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. RESULTS Participants had a mean age of 71 ± 6 years, 46.4% were female, and the median BMI was 30 ± 4 kg/m2. After adjusting for confounding variables, patients in the highest (%E:P) tertile showed significantly higher MoCA and SAGE scores compared to those in the lowest tertile (p < 0.005). We identified an optimal (%E:P) threshold of 0.375 for predicting cognitive impairment, with a sensitivity of 53% and specificity of 64%. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that a lower (%E:P) ratio may be a risk factor for cognitive impairment in elderly T2DM patients. Monitoring this ratio may serve as an early detection tool for cognitive deterioration. Moreover, current protein intake recommendations for older adults with T2DM may be insufficient to prevent cognitive impairment. Further research is needed to establish optimal dietary guidelines for this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE We investigated the relationship between daily adequate FV intake and risk of all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer mortalities among Malaysian adults. METHODS Data from a total of 18,211 Malaysian adults aged 18 years and above whom participated in the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2011 were analyzed. The participants were followed up for approximately 11 years, and mortality data were ascertained through record linkages with the death registry from the Malaysian National Registration Department. Multiple Cox regression was applied to assess the association between daily adequate FV intake and risk of all-cause, CVD, and cancer mortalities, adjusting for sociodemographic, lifestyle, and health conditions. RESULTS During the follow-up period, we observed a total of 1809 all-cause, 374 CVD, and 216 cancer mortalities. No significant association between daily adequate FV intake with all-cause mortality (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR): 1.01, 95% confidence interval (CI: 0.79-1.31), CVD mortality (aHR: 0.91, 95% CI: 0.57-1.47), and cancer mortality (aHR: 1.27, 95% CI: 0.74-2.17) were observed, even after excluding deaths that occurred in the first two years of observation. CONCLUSIONS Further investigation on the type of FV intake and its preparation method with risk of mortality will provide a holistic insight into the causal relationship between FV intake and mortality.

Abstract
Inflammation contributes to the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes (T2DM). This study sought to document how the systemic biomarkers of inflammation varied based on food choices among patients with T2DM. This cross-sectional study enrolled ambulatory patients with T2DM. Demographic and clinical information was collected. Five drops of fingerstick blood were collected using an absorbent paper device (HemaSpot HFR). C-reactive protein (CRP), serum amyloid A protein (SAA), and fibrinogen were measured using a Luminex assay. Patient-generated 7-day food diaries were analyzed using a validated food processor software. Data were analyzed by Pearson's correlation tests, linear regression and logistic regression with the significance level set at 0.05. Among the 71 participants, 43 (60.6%) were females. The average age and duration of T2DM were 64.1 ± 10.3 and 15.8 ± 9.1 years, respectively. In a simple linear regression run with selected micronutrients, iron [F (1, 53) = 5.319, p < 0.05, adj. R2 = 0.074] significantly predicted plasma CRP. This significance was lost with multiple linear regressions including age, gender, BMI, T2DM duration, T2DM complications, glycohemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and other micronutrients. The average intake of most micronutrients by the participants was below the recommended daily intake. A higher intake of iron-rich foods was associated with higher levels of systemic inflammation in a simple linear regression model, but the association was not present after adjusting for patient factors like age, gender, BMI and T2DM-related variables. This relationship needs to be explored further given the key role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of T2DM and its associated complications.

Abstract
The growing drive towards more sustainable dietary patterns has led to an increased demand for and availability of plant-based meat analogues (PBMAs). This systematic review aims to summarize the currently available evidence from human intervention studies investigating the impact of substituting animal meat (AM) with PBMAs in adults. A total of 19 studies were included. Overall, an increase in satiety following PBMA intake was reported, albeit to different extents and not always accompanied by changes in leptin and ghrelin. PBMAs generally resulted in lower protein bioavailability and a smaller increase in plasma essential amino acids in comparison to AM. However, muscle protein synthesis and physical performance were not affected. Finally, conflicting results have been reported for other outcomes, such as pancreatic and gastrointestinal hormones, oxidative stress and inflammation, vascular function, and microbiota composition. In conclusion, we documented that the impact of substituting AM with PBMA products has been scarcely investigated. In addition, the heterogeneity found in terms of study design, population, outcomes, and findings suggests the need for additional high-quality intervention trials, particularly long-term ones, to better clarify the advantages and potential critical issues of such substitutions within sustainable healthy diets.

Abstract
Introduction The oxidative balance score (OBS) is a holistic measure that represents the overall equilibrium between prooxidants and antioxidants in one's diet and lifestyle. Little research has been conducted on the correlation between OBS and 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk (ASCVD). Therefore, the objective of this investigation was to examine the potential correlation between OBS and 10-year risk. Methods A total of 11,936 participants from the NHANES conducted between 2001 and 2016 were chosen for the study and their dietary and lifestyle factors were used to assess the OBS score. Logistic regression and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were employed in the cross-sectional study to evaluate the correlation between OBS and the 10-year ASCVD risk. The cohort study utilized Cox proportional hazards models and RCS to assess the correlation between OBS and all-causes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in individuals with high ASCVD risk. Results The cross-sectional study found that the OBS (OR = 0.94, 95% CI = 0.93-0.98), as well as the dietary OBS (OR = 0.96, 95% CI = 0.92-0.96) and lifestyle OBS (OR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.69-0.79), were inversely associated with the 10-year ASCVD risk. A significant linear relationship was observed between OBS, dietary OBS, lifestyle OBS, and the 10-year ASCVD risk. The cohort study found that the OBS was inversely associated with all-cause (aHRs = 0.97, 95% CI = 0.96-0.99) and CVD (aHRs = 0.95, 95% CI = 0.93-0.98) mortality in individuals with high ASCVD risk. A significant linear correlation was observed between OBS, dietary OBS, lifestyle OBS, and all-cause and CVD mortality in participants with high ASCVD risk. Conclusion The findings indicate that OBS, OBS related to diet, and OBS related to lifestyle were significantly inversely correlated with the 10-year ASCVD risk. Adopting a healthy eating plan and making positive lifestyle choices that result in increased OBS levels can help lower the likelihood of all-cause and CVD mortality in individuals with high ASCVD risk.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death worldwide, influenced by the interaction of factors, including age, sex, genetic conditions, overweight/obesity, hypertension, an abnormal lipid profile, vitamin deficiencies, diabetes, and psychological factors. This study aimed to assess the relationships between psychosocial and nutritional factors in a group of 61 patients with CVD (i.e., atherosclerosis, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and myocardial infarction) and their possible impact on the course of the disease. The plasma concentrations of vitamins A, E, D, and β-carotene were determined using validated HPLC-MS/MS, while the lipid profile was analyzed enzymatically. Psychosocial factors and nutritional behaviors were assessed using author-designed questionnaires. Over 50% of patients had 25-OH-D3 and retinol deficiencies, while >85% of patients exhibited significant deficiencies in α-tocopherol and β-carotene. The lipid profile showed no specific relationship with any particular CVD. Dietary behavior minimally impacted biochemical parameters except for higher β-carotene concentrations in the group with higher fruit and vegetable intake. The negative impact of the CVD on selected parameters of quality of life was noticed. To increase the effectiveness of the prevention and treatment of CVD, the need for interdisciplinary cooperation observed between doctors, psychologists, and specialists in human nutrition seems to be justified.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases accompanying metabolic syndrome comprise one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The medical community undertakes attempts to improve treatment options and minimize cardiovascular diseases' numerous consequences and exacerbations. In parallel with pharmacotherapies provided by physicians, nutritionists are developing strategies for diet therapy and prevention based on lifestyle changes, with high success rates. Consumption of specified food compounds included in various products with proven protective properties can be helpful in this regard. Due to the wide possibilities of diet in metabolic health promotion, it seems necessary to systematize information about the metabolically protective and cardioprotective properties of fiber, probiotic bacteria, plant sterols, folic acid, vitamins B12, C, and E, PUFAs, lycopene, polyphenols, arginine, CoQ10, and allicin. The aim of this review was to present the food compounds with potential use in cardiometabolic prevention and diet therapy based on the latest available literature.

Abstract
Cardiovascular health is a hot topic around the world, and as the incidence of cardiovascular disease increases each year, people are increasingly focusing on the management of their heart health. Dietary and lifestyle changes as non-pharmacological treatments have been increasingly recognized as important in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and in reducing the risk of cardiovascular accidents. Awareness of different nutrients and their effects on cardiovascular health is important for establishing a good dietary pattern. This review summarizes the effects of the five major nutrients in the daily diet, namely carbohydrates, proteins, dietary fats, vitamins, and minerals, on cardiovascular health, and aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the effects of a healthy dietary pattern on cardiovascular health.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Several RCTs have reported significant reductions in depression symptoms with the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), but observational studies have reported inconsistent findings. Moreover, studies have rarely investigated the mediating role of socioeconomic status (SES), including objective material status, in adherence to the MedDiet and its impact on depressive symptoms in the same population. Therefore, this cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between adherence to the MedDiet, socioeconomic factors, and depression severity. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted between June and December 2022 across Saudia Arabia. The snowball sampling technique was used to recruit participants aged ≥18 years. Mediterranean diet adherence screener (MEDAS) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) were used to assess adherence to the MedDiet and depression severity. An SES index, validated in the Saudi Arabian context, was used to assess SES. The data were analyzed using the Chi-square and Pearson's correlation tests. Results: Only 21% of our study population (n = 467) was MedDiet adherent. Adherence was significantly associated with education (p = 0.014) but not employment status among traditional SES indicators. Similarly, only television ownership (p = 0.009) was associated with MedDiet adherence among the 20 objective material possessions investigated. Nonetheless, the MedDiet-adherent group had a significantly lower PHQ-9 score than the non-adherent group (6.16 ± 0.68 vs. 8.35 ± 0.31, p = 0.002). A moderate but significantly negative correlation between MEDAS and PHQ-9 scores (r = -0.16, p = 0.001) was noted. Conclusions: MedDiet adherence was associated with lower depression severity scores. In addition to education and television ownership, adherence was not associated with any objective indicators of SES.

Abstract
Background and Objectives. Optimal nutrition for type 2 diabetes (T2DM) aims to improve glycemic control by promoting weight loss and reducing adipose tissue, consequently improving cardiovascular health. Dietary alterations can influence adipose tissue metabolism and potentially impact adipocytokines like visfatin, thereby affecting atherosclerosis development. This study aimed to investigate dietary habits and adherence to recommendations among individuals with T2DM and to examine how dietary adherence influences the association between visfatin and subclinical atherosclerosis. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional multicenter study involved 216 adults (30-70 years) with T2DM, assessing dietary habits, adherence to recommendations (carbohydrates, fats, protein, fiber, saturated fatty acid, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acid (PUFA and MUFA) and salt), and the association between visfatin and subclinical atherosclerosis. Participants completed 24 h dietary recalls; dietary misreporting was assessed using the Goldberg cut-off method. Carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and plaque occurrence were evaluated with ultrasound, while visfatin levels were measured using Luminex's xMAP technology. Results: Three of the eight recommendations were followed in 31% of subjects, two in 26%, and four in 20%, with the highest adherence to MUFA and protein intake. Significant correlations between IMT and visfatin were observed in individuals with specific dietary patterns. The association between IMT and visfatin persisted when PUFA and MUFA intake aligned with recommendations. PUFA intake ≤ 10% and MUFA ≤ 20% of total energy significantly correlated with carotid artery IMT (p = 0.010 and p = 0.006, respectively). Visfatin's associations with IMT remained significant (p = 0.006) after adjusting for common risk factors, medication use, and dietary nonadherence. No association was observed with carotid artery plaque. Conclusions: Dietary compliance was limited, as only 31% adhered even to three of eight recommendations. A common dietary pattern characterized by low carbohydrate and fiber but high fat, total fat, saturated fat, and salt intake was identified. This pattern amplifies the statistical association between visfatin and subclinical atherosclerosis.

Abstract
AIMS People with type 1 diabetes (T1D) have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The Mediterranean diet is associated with reduced CVD; however, the evidence in T1D is scarce. We aimed to analyse the relationships between adherence to the energy-restricted Mediterranean diet (erMEDd) and carotid atherosclerosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS We included children with T1D without CVD, with ≥1 of the following: age ≥40 years, diabetic kidney disease, or ≥10 years of disease duration with another risk factor. Plaque presence (intima-media thickness ≥1.5 mm) was determined by ultrasonography. The PREDIMED-Plus 17-item questionnaire (PP-17) was used to assess adherence to the erMEDd. RESULTS Four hundred one individuals were included (48% males, age 48.3 ± 11 years, diabetes duration 26.8 ± 11.4 years). Those harbouring plaques (42%) showed lower adherence to the erMEDd (PP-17: 8.9 ± 2.3 of a maximum of 17 vs. 9.8 ± 2.5, p < 0.001). Greater adherence to the erMEDd was correlated with an overall better metabolic profile. After adjusting for multiple confounders, adherence to the erMEDd was independently associated with carotid atherosclerosis (OR 0.86 [0.77-0.95] for plaque presence and OR 0.85 [0.75-0.97] for ≥2 plaques). The consumption of fruit and nuts and preference of white over red meat was higher in individuals without atherosclerosis (p < 0.05). Fruit and nut consumption was associated with lower plaque prevalence in the fully adjusted models (OR 0.38 [0.19-0.73] and 0.51 [0.29-0.93]). CONCLUSIONS Greater adherence to the erMEDd is associated with less carotid atherosclerosis in children with T1D at high risk of CVD. Strategies to improve and implement healthy dietary patterns in this population should be encouraged.
