Polyacrylonitrile Nanofiber Membrane Modified with Ag/GO Composite for Water Purification System

Fabrication of nanocomposite membranes containing Ag/GO nanohybrid for phycocyanin concentration

In this research, silver/graphene oxide (Ag/GO) nanohybrid was first synthesized and used in production of polysulfone (PSF) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes via phase inversion method for concentrating phycocyanin (PC) and treating methylene blue (MB) dye effluent. Designing the experiment (DOE) using Box-Behnken method by Design Expert software helped to calculate the optimal values of the variables under study. The studied variables included PSF polymer concentration, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) pore-former concentration and Ag/GO nanohybrid content, which were investigated for their effects on pure water flux (PWF) and MB pigment rejection. According to the results of the DOE, the membrane containing 19.485 wt% PSF, 0.043 wt% PVP and 0.987 wt% Ag/GO was selected as the optimal membrane. Due to the high price of PC as drug, and the importance of removing MB pigment from the effluent of dyeing and textile industries, the membranes were first optimized with MB pigment and then the optimal membrane was used for concentrating PC. The results showed that PWF reaches from 40.05 L.m- 2.h- 1 (LMH) for the neat membrane to 156.73 LMH for the optimized membrane, which shows about 4 times improvement. Compared to the neat membrane, flux recovery ratio (FRR) of the optimized membrane increased by about 20% and its total fouling (Rt) decreased by about 10%. Also, the results showed that the optimized membrane can remove 81.6% of MB, as well as to reject 93.8% of PC.

Fabrication and optimization of curcumin-multiwalled carbon nanotube (C-MWCNT) conjugate reinforced electrospun polyacrylonitrile membrane for water treatment applications

In the recent times, one of the most crucial tasks related to water resources is the treatment of polluted water. This study reports the development of a functionalized nanofibrous membrane with enhanced filtration performance, heavy metal removal, and photocatalytic dye degradation for the effective treatment of contaminated water. The nanofibrous mats were developed by the process of electrospinning using a polymeric solution of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) reinforced with curcumin-multiwalled carbon nanotube (C-MWCNT) conjugate. The experimental trials for membrane fabrication were adapted based on the design of experiments (DoE) approach by making use of the Box-Behnken design (BBD) for a three-variable system, a component of response surface methodology (RSM). The three variable parameters selected for optimization of the electrospinning process were the dopant concentration (in weight percentage), the flow rate (in millilitre per hour), and the spinning time (in hours), respectively, and a total of 15 fibrous membranes were fabricated. The SEM analysis of the fabricated membranes revealed alterations in the surface morphology of the fibrous mats with variations in the electrospinning parameters. The infrared spectrum of the fibrous mats, validated the incorporation C-MWCNT conjugate in PAN, thereby confirming the formation of PAN/C-MWNCNT membrane. The mean flow pore size and breaking force of the PAN/C-MWCNT membranes was also obtained using a universal testing machine (UTM) and porometer, respectively. To choose the best membrane for efficient filtration experiments, the performance of each of the prepared membranes was assessed in terms of solute rejection percentage (SR%), permeate flux (PF), and pure water flux (PWF). The statistical analysis of the assessed parameters in accordance with the membranes prepared was done using the MINITAB software, and the three-dimensional (3D) surface plots were constructed using the STATISTICA software to visualize and validate the relation between each of the electrospinning parameters and the corresponding membrane performance characteristics. Similarly, the potential of the electrospun membranes for efficient heavy metal ion removal and photocatalysis were also tested independently and the optimal electrospinning parameters were determined for the same. Based on the results, it was observed that the PAN/C-MWCNT membranes could serve as potential candidates for the treatment of polluted water.

Fabrication of PCL/CMARX/GO Composite Nanofibrous Mats for Dye Adsorption: Wastewater Treatment

The effluents of industrial wastewater contain several toxic organic and inorganic pollutants that may contaminate clean and freshwater sources if untreated or poorly treated. These toxic pollutants include colors; hazardous compounds; surfactants; cosmetics; agrochemicals; pharmaceutical by-products; and agricultural, pharmaceutical, and medical contaminants. Treating wastewater has become a global problem. Many projects have been started in the last two decades to treat wastewater, resultant water pollution, and associated waste management problems. Adsorbants based on graphene oxide (GO) are viable wastewater treatment materials due to their adaptability, photocatalytic action, and capacity for self-assembly. Here, we report the fabrication of nanofibrous mats from polycaprolactone (PCL), carboxymethyl arabinoxylan (CMARX), and carboxyl-functionalized-graphene oxide using an electrospinning technique. The silver nanoparticles were loaded onto the mat to enhance their photocatalytic activity. These mats were characterized using different techniques, including Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The water contact angles were used to study their hydrophilic and hydrophobic behavior. The Langmuir isotherm model and adsorption kinetics were studied to evaluate their adsorption capabilities against methylene blue (MB). Sample 2 followed the Langmuir isotherm model (R² = 0.9939). Adsorption kinetics exhibited pseudo-second order behavior (R² = 0.9978) due to their maximum correlation coefficient values. MB has excellent adsorption at room temperature and the formation of the monolayer at the surface of the adsorption mat. An enhanced PO₄^3- and MB adsorption was observed, providing recyclability up to 4-5 times. Hence, the fabricated nanofibrous mat would be a potential candidate for more effective wastewater treatment applications.

Efficacy of Electrospun Nanofiber Membranes on Fouling Mitigation: A Review

Despite the advantages of high contaminant removal, operational flexibility, and technical advancements offered, the undesirable fouling property of membranes limits their durability, thus posing restrictions on their usage. An enormous struggle is underway to conquer this major challenge. Most of the earlier reviews include the basic concepts of fouling and antifouling, with respect to particular separation processes such as ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis and membrane bioreactors, graphene-based membranes, zwitterionic membranes, and so on. As per our knowledge, the importance of nanofiber membranes in challenging the fouling process has not been included in any record to date. Nanofibers with the ability to be embedded in any medium with a high surface to volume ratio play a key role in mitigating the fouling of membranes, and it is important for these studies to be critically analyzed and reported. Our Review hence intends to focus on nanofiber membranes developed with enhanced antifouling and biofouling properties with a brief introduction on fabrication processes and surface and chemical modifications. A summary on surface modifications of preformed nanofibers is given along with different nanofiller combinations used and blend fabrication with efficacy in wastewater treatment and antifouling abilities. In addition, future prospects and advancements are discussed.

Purifying water with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)-incorporated membranes: Recent advancements and critical challenges

In the face of the growing global water crisis, membrane technology is a promising means of purifying water and wastewater. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been widely used to improve membrane performance, for antibiofouling, and to aid in photocatalytic degradation, thermal response, and electro-conductivity. However, several critical issues such as short antimicrobial periods, trade-off effects and silver inactivation seriously restrict the engineering application of AgNPs-incorporated membranes. In addition, there is controversy around the use of AgNPs given the toxic preparation process and environmental/biological risks. Hence, it is of great significance to summarize and analyze the recent developments and critical challenges in the use of AgNPs-incorporated membranes in water and wastewater treatment, and to propose potential solutions. We reviewed the different properties and functions of AgNPs and their corresponding applications in AgNPs-incorporated membranes. Recently, multifunctional, novel AgNP-incorporated membranes combined with other functional materials have been developed with high-performance. We further clarified the synergistic mechanisms between AgNPs and these novel nanomaterials and/or polymers, and elucidated their functions and roles in membrane separation. Finally, the critical challenges of AgNPs-incorporated membranes and the proposed solutions were outlined: i) Prolonging the antimicrobial cycle through long-term and controlled AgNPs release; ii) Overcoming the trade-off effect and organic fouling of the AgNPs-incorporated membranes; iii) Preparation of sustainable AgNPs-incorporated membranes; iv) Addressing biotoxicity induced by AgNPs; and v) Deactivation of AgNPs-incorporated membrane. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive discussion of the advancements and challenges of AgNPs-incorporated membranes and guides the development of more robust, multi-functional and sustainable AgNPs-incorporated membranes.

Electrospun Ag-decorated reduced GO-graft-chitosan composite nanofibers with visible light photocatalytic activity for antibacterial performance

The treatment of water contaminated by bacteria is becoming a necessity. The nanomaterials possessing both intrinsic antibacterial properties and photocatalytic activity are excellent candidates for water disinfection. The powdered form of nanomaterials can be aggregated while embedding the nanomaterials into the NFs can overcome the limitation and enhance the photocatalytic activity and transition from UV-light to visiblelight. Here, graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized, grafted to chitosan, and decorated with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) to produce Ag-decorated reduced GO-graft-Chitosan (AGC) NPs. The blends of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and AGC NPs were prepared in various concentrations of 0.5 wt%, 1.0 wt%, 5.0 wt%, and 10.0 wt% and used to fabricate the electrospun composite NFs. FTIR/ATR, UV-Vis, Raman, XRD, and SEM/EDAX analyses confirmed the successful preparation of the NPs and NFs. The cytotoxicity and antibacterial activity of the composite NFs were received in the order of composite NFs 10.0 wt%˃ 5.0 wt%˃ 1.0 wt%˃ 0.5 wt% in both conditions with/without light irradiation. Their cytotoxicity and antibacterial activity were more under light irradiation compared to the dark. The composite NFs (5.0 wt%) were distinguished as the optimum NFs with cell viability of 80% within 24 h and 60% within 48 h on L929 cells and inhibition zone diameter (IZD) of 12 mm for E. coli and 13 mm for S. aureus after 24 h under the light irradiation. The optimum composite NFs showed thermal stability up to 180 °C and tensile strength of 1.11 MPa with 21.71% elongation at break.

Modification strategies of membranes with enhanced Anti-biofouling properties for wastewater Treatment: A review

This review addresses composite membranes used for wastewater treatment, focusing heavily on the anti-biofouling properties of such membranes. Biofouling caused by the development of a thick biofilm on the membrane surface is a major issue that reduces water permeance and reduces its lifetime. Biofilm formation and adhesion are mitigated by modifying membranes with two-dimensional or zero-dimensional carbon-based nanomaterials or their modified substituents. In particular, nanomaterials based on graphene, including graphene oxide and carbon quantum dots, are mainly used as nanofillers in the membrane. Functionalization of the nanofillers with various organic ligands or compositing the nanofiller with other materials, such as silver nanoparticles, enhances the bactericidal ability of composite membranes. Moreover, such membrane modifications reduce biofilm adhesion while increasing water permeance and salt/dye rejection. This review discusses the recent literature on developing graphene oxide-based and carbon quantum dot-based composite membranes for biofouling-resistant wastewater treatment.

Engineering and Characterization of Antibacterial Coaxial Nanofiber Membranes for Oil/Water Separation

In the present study, a coaxial nanofiber membrane was developed using the electrospinning technique. The developed membranes were fabricated from hydrophilic cellulose acetate (CA) polymer and hydrophobic polysulfone (PSf) polymer as a core and shell in an alternative way with addition of 0.1 wt.% of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs). The membranes were treated with a 2M NaOH solution to enhance hydrophilicity and thus increase water separation flux. Chemical and physical characterizations were performed, such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and surface wettability was measured by means of water contact angle (WCA), mechanical properties, surface morphology via field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and microscopy energy dispersive (EDS) mapping and point analysis. The results show higher mechanical properties for the coaxial nanofiber membranes which reached a tensile strength of 7.58 MPa, a Young's modulus of 0.2 MPa, and 23.4 M J.m-3 of toughness. However, treated mebranes show lower mechanical properties (tensile strength of 0.25 MPa, Young's modulus of 0.01 MPa, and 0.4 M J.m-3 of toughness). In addition, the core and shell nanofiber membranes showed a uniform distribution of coaxial nanofibers. Membranes with ZnO NPs showed a porous structure and elimination of nanofibers after treatment due to the formation of nanosheets. Interestingly, membranes changed from hydrophobic to hydrophilic (the WCA changed from 90 ± 8° to 14 ± 2°). Besides that, composite nanofiber membranes with ZnO NPs showed antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli. Furthermore, the water flux for the modified membranes was improved by 1.6 times compared to the untreated membranes.
