Abstract
Chitosan (CS) composite gels have emerged as promising materials with diverse applications in biomedicine. This review provides a concise overview of recent advancements and key aspects in the development of CS composite gels. The unique properties of CS, such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and antimicrobial activity, make it an attractive candidate for gel-based composites. Incorporating various additives, such as nanoparticles, polymers, and bioactive compounds, enhances the mechanical, thermal, and biological and other functional properties of CS gels. This review discusses the fabrication methods employed for CS composite gels, including blending and crosslinking, highlighting their influence on the final properties of the gels. Furthermore, the uses of CS composite gels in tissue engineering, wound healing, drug delivery, and 3D printing highlight their potential to overcome a number of the present issues with drug delivery. The biocompatibility, antimicrobial properties, electroactive, thermosensitive and pH responsive behavior and controlled release capabilities of these gels make them particularly suitable for biomedical applications. In conclusion, CS composite gels represent a versatile class of materials with significant potential for a wide range of applications. Further research and development efforts are necessary to optimize their properties and expand their utility in pharmaceutical and biomedical fields.

Abstract
In the evolving field of orthopedic surgery, the integration of three-dimensional printing (3D printing) has emerged as a transformative technology, particularly in addressing the rising incidence of degenerative joint diseases. The integration of 3D printing technology in hip arthroplasty offers substantial advantages throughout the surgical process. In preoperative planning, 3D models enable meticulous assessments, aiding in accurate implant selection and precise surgical strategies. Intraoperatively, the technology contributes to precise prosthesis design, reducing operation duration, X-ray exposures, and blood loss. Beyond surgery, 3D printing revolutionizes medical equipment production, imaging, and implant design, showcasing benefits such as enhanced osseointegration and reduced stress shielding with titanium cups. Challenges include a higher risk of postoperative infection due to the porous surfaces of 3D-printed implants, technical complexities in the printing process, and the need for skilled manpower. Despite these challenges, the evolving nature of 3D printing technologies underscores the importance of relying on existing orthopedic surgical practices while emphasizing the need for standardized guidelines to fully harness its potential in improving patient care.

Abstract
Precision manufacturing requirements are the key to ensuring the quality and reliability of biomedical implants. The powder bed fusion (PBF) technique offers a promising solution, enabling the creation of complex, patient-specific implants with a high degree of precision. This technology is revolutionizing the biomedical industry, paving the way for a new era of personalized medicine. This review explores and details powder bed fusion 3D printing and its application in the biomedical field. It begins with an introduction to the powder bed fusion 3D-printing technology and its various classifications. Later, it analyzes the numerous fields in which powder bed fusion 3D printing has been successfully deployed where precision components are required, including the fabrication of personalized implants and scaffolds for tissue engineering. This review also discusses the potential advantages and limitations for using the powder bed fusion 3D-printing technology in terms of precision, customization, and cost effectiveness. In addition, it highlights the current challenges and prospects of the powder bed fusion 3D-printing technology. This work offers valuable insights for researchers engaged in the field, aiming to contribute to the advancement of the powder bed fusion 3D-printing technology in the context of precision manufacturing for biomedical applications.

Abstract
3D printing technology is an emerging method that gained extensive attention from researchers worldwide, especially in the health and medical fields. Biopolymers are an emerging class of materials offering excellent properties and flexibility for additive manufacturing. Biopolymers are widely used in biomedical applications in biosensing, immunotherapy, drug delivery, tissue engineering and regeneration, implants, and medical devices. Various biodegradable and non-biodegradable polymeric materials are considered as bio-ink for 3d printing. Here, we offer an extensive literature review on the current applications of synthetic biopolymers in the field of 3D printing. A trend in the publication of biopolymers in the last 10 years are focused on the review by analyzing more than 100 publications. Their application and classification based on biodegradability are discussed. The various studies, along with their practical applications, are elaborated in the subsequent sections for polyethylene, polypropylene, polycaprolactone, polylactide, etc. for biomedical applications. The disadvantages of various biopolymers are discussed, and future perspectives like combating biocompatibility problems using 3D printed biomaterials to build compatible prosthetics are also discussed and the potential application of using resin with the combination of biopolymers to build customized implants, personalized drug delivery systems and organ on a chip technologies are expected to open a new set of chances for the development of healthcare and regenerative medicine in the future.

Abstract
Background Currently, metal implants are widely used in orthopedic surgeries, including fracture fixation, spinal fusion, joint replacement, and bone tumor defect repair. However, conventional implants are difficult to be customized according to the recipient's skeletal anatomy and defect characteristics, leading to difficulties in meeting the individual needs of patients. Additive manufacturing (AM) or three-dimensional (3D) printing technology, an advanced digital fabrication technique capable of producing components with complex and precise structures, offers opportunities for personalization. Methods We systematically reviewed the literature on 3D printing orthopedic metal implants over the past 10 years. Relevant animal, cellular, and clinical studies were searched in PubMed and Web of Science. In this paper, we introduce the 3D printing method and the characteristics of biometals and summarize the properties of 3D printing metal implants and their clinical applications in orthopedic surgery. On this basis, we discuss potential possibilities for further generalization and improvement. Results 3D printing technology has facilitated the use of metal implants in different orthopedic procedures. By combining medical images from techniques such as CT and MRI, 3D printing technology allows the precise fabrication of complex metal implants based on the anatomy of the injured tissue. Such patient-specific implants not only reduce excessive mechanical strength and eliminate stress-shielding effects, but also improve biocompatibility and functionality, increase cell and nutrient permeability, and promote angiogenesis and bone growth. In addition, 3D printing technology has the advantages of low cost, fast manufacturing cycles, and high reproducibility, which can shorten patients' surgery and hospitalization time. Many clinical trials have been conducted using customized implants. However, the use of modeling software, the operation of printing equipment, the high demand for metal implant materials, and the lack of guidance from relevant laws and regulations have limited its further application. Conclusions There are advantages of 3D printing metal implants in orthopedic applications such as personalization, promotion of osseointegration, short production cycle, and high material utilization. With the continuous learning of modeling software by surgeons, the improvement of 3D printing technology, the development of metal materials that better meet clinical needs, and the improvement of laws and regulations, 3D printing metal implants can be applied to more orthopedic surgeries. The translational potential of this paper Precision, intelligence, and personalization are the future direction of orthopedics. It is reasonable to believe that 3D printing technology will be more deeply integrated with artificial intelligence, 4D printing, and big data to play a greater role in orthopedic metal implants and eventually become an important part of the digital economy. We aim to summarize the latest developments in 3D printing metal implants for engineers and surgeons to design implants that more closely mimic the morphology and function of native bone.

Abstract
3D printing is gaining traction in research and development as a way to quickly, cheaply, and easily manufacture polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) molds. The most commonly used method is resin printing, which is relatively expensive and requires specialized printers. This study shows that polylactic acid (PLA) filament printing is a cheaper, more readily available alternative to resin printing, that does not inhibit the curing of PDMS. As a proof of concept, a PLA mold for PDMS-based wells was designed, and 3D printed. We introduce an effective method to smooth the printed PLA mold, based on chloroform vapor treatment. After this chemical post-processing step, the smoothened mold was used to cast a ring of PDMS prepolymer. The PDMS ring was attached to a glass coverslip after oxygen plasma treatment. The PDMS–glass well showed no leakage and was well suited to its intended use. When used for cell culturing, monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDCs) showed no morphological anomalies, as tested by confocal microscopy, nor did they show an increase in cytokines, as tested using ELISA. This underlines the versatility and strength of PLA filament printing and exemplifies how it can be valuable to a researcher’s toolset.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to elucidate the effects of hip prostheses in 192Ir HDR brachytherapy and determine dose uncertainties introduced by the treatment planning. A gynaecological phantom irradiated using Nucletron 192Ir microSelectron HDR source was modeled using MCNP5 code. Three hip materials considered in this study were water, bone, and metal prosthesis. According to the obtained results, a dose perturbation was observed within the medium with a higher atomic number, which reduced the dose to the nearby region.

Abstract
In the last few decades Additive Manufacturing has advanced and is becoming important for biomedical applications. In this study we look at a variety of biomedical devices including, bone implants, tooth implants, osteochondral tissue repair patches, general tissue repair patches, nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) and coronary artery stents to which fused deposition modelling (FDM) can be applied. We have proposed CAD designs for these devices and employed a cost-effective 3D printer to fabricate proof-of-concept prototypes. We highlight issues with current CAD design and slicing and suggest optimisations of more complex designs targeted towards biomedical applications. We demonstrate the ability to print patient specific implants from real CT scans and reconstruct missing structures by means of mirroring and mesh mixing. A blend of Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), a family of biocompatible and bioresorbable natural polymers and Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), a known bioresorbable medical polymer is used. Our characterisation of the PLA/PHA filament suggest that its tensile properties might be useful to applications such as stents, NGCs, and bone scaffolds. In addition to this, the proof-of-concept work for other applications shows that FDM is very useful for a large variety of other soft tissue applications, however other more elastomeric MCL-PHAs need to be used.

Abstract
Engineers play a critical role in the advancement of biomedical science and the development of diagnostic and therapeutic technologies for human well-being. The complexity of medical problems requires the synthesis of diverse knowledge systems and clinical experiences to develop solutions. Therefore, engineers in the healthcare and biomedical industries are interdisciplinary by nature to innovate technical tools in sophisticated clinical settings. In academia, engineering is usually divided into disciplines with dominant characteristics. Since biomedical engineering has been established as an independent curriculum, the term "biomedical engineers" often refers to the population from a specific discipline. In fact, engineers who contribute to medical and healthcare innovations cover a broad range of engineering majors, including electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, industrial engineering, and computer sciences. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the contributions of different engineering professions to the development of innovative biomedical solutions. We use the term "engineers in medicine" to refer to all talents who integrate the body of engineering knowledge and biological sciences to advance healthcare systems.

Abstract
Tissue Engineering (TE) is a branch of Regenerative Medicine (RM) that combines stem cells and biomaterial scaffolds to create living tissue constructs to restore patients' organs after injury or disease. Over the last decade, emerging technologies such as 3D bioprinting, biofabrication, supramolecular materials, induced pluripotent stem cells, and organoids have entered the field. While this rapidly evolving field is expected to have great therapeutic potential, its development from bench to bedside presents several ethical and societal challenges. To make sure TE will reach its ultimate goal of improving patient welfare, these challenges should be mapped out and evaluated. Therefore, we performed a systematic review of the ethical implications of the development and application of TE for regenerative purposes, as mentioned in the academic literature. A search query in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and PhilPapers yielded 2451 unique articles. After systematic screening, 237 relevant ethical and biomedical articles published between 2008 and 2021 were included in our review. We identified a broad range of ethical implications that could be categorized under 10 themes. Seven themes trace the development from bench to bedside: (1) animal experimentation, (2) handling human tissue, (3) informed consent, (4) therapeutic potential, (5) risk and safety, (6) clinical translation, and (7) societal impact. Three themes represent ethical safeguards relevant to all developmental phases: (8) scientific integrity, (9) regulation, and (10) patient and public involvement. This review reveals that since 2008 a significant body of literature has emerged on how to design clinical trials for TE in a responsible manner. However, several topics remain in need of more attention. These include the acceptability of alternative translational pathways outside clinical trials, soft impacts on society and questions of ownership over engineered tissues. Overall, this overview of the ethical and societal implications of the field will help promote responsible development of new interventions in TE and RM. It can also serve as a valuable resource and educational tool for scientists, engineers, and clinicians in the field by providing an overview of the ethical considerations relevant to their work. Impact statement To our knowledge, this is the first time that the ethical implications of Tissue Engineering (TE) have been reviewed systematically. By gathering existing scholarly work and identifying knowledge gaps, this review facilitates further research into the ethical and societal implications of TE and Regenerative Medicine (RM) and other emerging biomedical technologies. Moreover, it will serve as a valuable resource and educational tool for scientists, engineers, and clinicians in the field by providing an overview of the ethical considerations relevant to their work. As such, our review may promote successful and responsible development of new strategies in TE and RM.

Abstract
3D-printing application in dentistry not only enables the manufacture of patient-specific devices and tissue constructs, but also allows mass customization, as well as digital workflow, with predictable lower cost and rapid turnaround times. 4D printing also shows a good impact in dentistry, as it can produce dynamic and adaptable materials, which have proven effective in the oral environment, under its continuously changing thermal and humidity conditions. It is expected to further boost the research into producing a whole tooth, capable to harmoniously integrate with the surrounding periodontium, which represents the ultimate goal of tissue engineering in dentistry. Because of their high versatility associated with the wide variety of available materials, additive manufacturing in dentistry predominantly targets the production of polymeric constructs. The aim of this narrative review is to catch a glimpse of the current state-of-the-art of additive manufacturing in dentistry, and the future perspectives of this modern technology, focusing on the specific polymeric materials.

Abstract
Nature's materials have evolved over time to be able to respond to environmental stimuli by generating complex structures that can change their functions in response to distance, time, and direction of stimuli. A number of technical efforts are currently being made to improve printing resolution, shape fidelity, and printing speed to mimic the structural design of natural materials with three-dimensional (3D) printing. Unfortunately, this technology is limited by the fact that printed objects are static and cannot be reshaped dynamically in response to stimuli. In recent years, several smart materials have been developed that can undergo dynamic morphing in response to a stimulus, thus resolving this issue. Four-dimensional (4D) printing refers to a manufacturing process involving additive manufacturing, smart materials, and specific geometries. It has become an essential technology for biomedical engineering and has the potential to create a wide range of useful biomedical products. This paper will discuss the concept of 4D bioprinting and the recent developments in smart matrials, which can be actuated by different stimuli and be exploited to develop biomimetic materials and structures, with significant implications for pharmaceutics and biomedical research, as well as prospects for the future.

Abstract
We investigated the role of metal artifact reduction by taking 3D print impressions using 3D data of Computed Tomography (CT) images based on the algorithm applied. We manufactured a phantom of a human mandible tooth made of gypsum and nickel alloy to measure the metal artifacts. CT images were obtained by changing the phantom tube voltage and tube current. The signal intensity of the image generated by the metal artifacts before and after the iterative metal artifact reduction algorithm (iMAR) was measured. A 3D printing process was performed after converting the images, before and after iMAR application, into STL files using InVesalius version 3.1.1 by selecting the conditions that minimized the effect of the artifact. Regarding metal artifacts, the Hounsfield unit (HU) value showed low as the tube voltage increased. The iMAR-applied images acquired under the same conditions showed a significantly lower HU. The artifacts, in the form of flashes, persisted in the 3D-printed product of the image not subjected to iMAR, but were largely removed in the 3D-printed product following iMAR application. In this study, the application of iMAR and data acquired using high tube voltage eliminated a significant portion of the metal artifacts, resulting in an impression shape that was consistent with the human body.

Abstract
Background: When particles deposit for instance in the lung after inhalation or in the hip joint after local release from a hip implant material they can initiate a defense response. Even though these particles originate from inert materials such as polyethylene (PE) or titanium, they may cause harm when reaching high local doses and overwhelming local defense mechanisms. Main body: This paper describes the parallels between adverse outcome pathways (AOP) and particle properties in lung overload and periprosthetic osteolysis (PPOL). It is noted that in both outcomes in different organs , the macrophage and cytokine orchestrated persistent inflammation is the common driver of events, in the bone leading to loss of bone density and structure, and in the lung leading to fibrosis and cancer. Most evidence on lung overload and its AOP is derived from chronic inhalation studies in rats, and the relevance to man is questioned. In PPOL, the paradigms and metrics are based on human clinical data, with additional insights generated from in vitro and animal studies. In both organ pathologies the total volume of particle deposition has been used to set threshold values for the onset of pathological alterations. The estimated clinical threshold for PPOL of 130 mg/ml is much higher than the amount to cause lung overload in the rat (10 mg/ml),although the threshold in PPOL is not necessarily synonymous to particle overload. Conclusions: The paradigms developed in two very different areas of particle response in the human body have major similarities in their AOP. Connecting the clinical evidence in PPOL to lung overload challenges relevance of rat inhalation studies to the human lung cancer hazard. .

Abstract
3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a technology that uses a variety of adhesive materials such as powdered metal or plastic to construct objects based on digital models. Recently, 3D printing technology has been combined with digital medicine, materials science, cytology, and other multidisciplinary fields, especially in the field of orthopedic built-in objects. The development of advanced 3D printing materials continues to meet the needs of clinical precision medicine and customize the most suitable prosthesis for everyone to improve service life and satisfaction. This article introduces the development of 3D printing technology and different types of materials. We also discuss the shortcomings of 3D printing technology and the current challenges, including the poor bionics of 3D printing products, lack of ideal bioinks, product safety, and lack of market supervision. We also prospect the future development trends of 3D printing.

Abstract
Nowadays, the replacement of a hip joint is a standard surgical procedure. However, researchers have continuingly been trying to upgrade endoprostheses and make them more similar to natural joints. The use of 3D printing could be helpful in such cases, since 3D-printed elements could mimic the natural lubrication mechanism of the meniscus. In this paper, we propose a method to deposit plastics directly on titanium alloy using 3D printing (FDM). This procedure allows one to obtain endoprostheses that are more similar to natural joints, easier to manufacture and have fewer components. During the research, biocompatible polymers suitable for 3D FDM printing were used, namely polylactide (PLA) and polyamide (PA). The research included tensile and shear tests of metal–polymer bonds, friction coefficient measurements and microscopic observations. The friction coefficient measurements revealed that only PA was promising for endoprostheses (the friction coefficient for PLA was too high). The strength tests and microscopic observations showed that PLA and PA deposition by 3D FDM printing directly on Ti6Al4V titanium alloy is possible; however, the achieved bonding strength and repeatability of the process were unsatisfactory. Nevertheless, the benefits arising from application of this method mean that it is worthwhile to continue working on this issue.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing technologies are essential in biomedical modeling and prototyping. Polymer-based bone models are widely used in simulating surgical interventions and procedures. Distal forearm fractures are the most common pediatric fractures, in which the Kirschner wire fixation is the most widely used operative method. However, there is still lingering controversy throughout the published literature regarding the number of wires and sites of insertion. This study aims to critically compare the biomechanical stability of different K-wire fixation techniques. Different osteosyntheses were reconstructed on 189 novel standardized bone models, which were created using 3D printing and molding techniques, using PLA and polyurethane materials, and it has been characterized in terms of mechanical behavior and structure. X-ray imaging has also been performed. The validation of the model was successful: the relative standard deviations (RSD = 100 × SD × mean-1, where RSD is relative standard deviation, SD is the standard deviation) of the mechanical parameters varied between 1.1% (10° torsion; 6.52 Nm ± 0.07 Nm) and 5.3% (5° torsion; 4.33 Nm ± 0.23 Nm). The simulated fractures were fixed using two K-wires inserted from radial and dorsal directions (crossed wire fixation) or both from the radial direction, in parallel (parallel wire fixation). Single-wire fixations with shifted exit points were also included. Additionally, three-point bending tests with dorsal and radial load and torsion tests were performed. We measured the maximum force required for a 5 mm displacement of the probe under dorsal and radial loads (means for crossed wire fixation: 249.5 N and 355.9 N; parallel wire fixation: 246.4 N and 308.3 N; single wire fixation: 115.9 N and 166.5 N). We also measured the torque required for 5° and 10° torsion (which varied between 0.15 Nm for 5° and 0.36 Nm for 10° torsion). The crossed wire fixation provided the most stability during the three-point bending tests. Against torsion, both the crossed and parallel wire fixation were superior to the single-wire fixations. The 3D printed model is found to be a reliable, cost-effective tool that can be used to characterize the different fixation methods, and it can be used in further pre-clinical investigations.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing is a digital manufacturing process and offers virtually limitless opportunities to develop structures/objects by tailoring material composition, processing conditions, and geometry technically at every point in an object. In this review, we present three different early adopted, however, widely used, polymer-based 3D printing processes; fused deposition modelling (FDM), selective laser sintering (SLS), and stereolithography (SLA) to create polymeric parts. The main aim of this review is to offer a comparative overview by correlating polymer material-process-properties for three different 3D printing techniques. Moreover, the advanced material-process requirements towards 4D printing via these print methods taking an example of magneto-active polymers is covered. Overall, this review highlights different aspects of these printing methods and serves as a guide to select a suitable print material and 3D print technique for the targeted polymeric material-based applications and also discusses the implementation practices towards 4D printing of polymer-based systems with a current state-of-the-art approach.

Abstract
3D printing is an emerging and disruptive technology, supporting the field of medicine over the past decades. In the recent years, the use of additive manufacturing (AM) has had a strong impact on everyday dental applications. Despite remarkable previous results from interdisciplinary research teams, there is no evidence or recommendation about the proper fabrication of handheld medical devices using desktop 3D printers. The aim of this study was to critically examine and compare the mechanical behavior of materials printed with FFF (fused filament fabrication) and CFR (continuous fiber reinforcement) additive manufacturing technologies, and to create and evaluate a massive and practically usable right upper molar forceps. Flexural and torsion fatigue tests, as well as Shore D measurements, were performed. The tensile strength was also measured in the case of the composite material. The flexural tests revealed the measured force values to have a linear correlation with the bending between the 10 mm (17.06 N at 5000th cycle) and 30 mm (37.99 N at 5000th cycle) deflection range. The findings were supported by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. Based on the results of the mechanical and structural tests, a dental forceps was designed, 3D printed using CFR technology, and validated by five dentists using a Likert scale. In addition, the vertical force of extraction was measured using a unique molar tooth model, where the reference test was carried out using a standard metal right upper molar forceps. Surprisingly, the tests revealed there to be no significant differences between the standard (84.80 N ± 16.96 N) and 3D-printed devices (70.30 N ± 4.41 N) in terms of extraction force in the tested range. The results also highlighted that desktop CFR technology is potentially suitable for the production of handheld medical devices that have to withstand high forces and perform load-bearing functions.

Abstract
Polyamide 12 (PA 22000) is a well-known material and one of the most biocompatible materials tested and used to manufacture customized medical implants by selective laser sintering technology. To optimize the implants, several research activities were considered, starting with the design and manufacture of test samples made of PA 2200 by selective laser sintering (SLS) technology, with different processing parameters and part orientations. The obtained samples were subjected to compression tests and later to SEM analyses of the fractured zones, in which we determined the microstructural properties of the analyzed samples. Finally, an evaluation of the surface roughness of the material and the possibility of improving the surface roughness of the realized parts using finite element analysis to determine the optimum contact pressure between the component made of PA 2200 by SLS and the component made of TiAl6V4 by SLM was performed.

Abstract
Personalized plates (P-Plates) could provide improved clinical outcomes in joint fusion by enabling perfect geometric matching between irregular bone and implants. However, there is no unified application framework for P-Plates for joint fusion. The objective of this study was to develop such a framework for P-Plates for tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis. A patient-specific bone model was constructed based on CT images, and the P-Plate was preliminarily designed to match the bones. Finite element method was used to optimize the stress distribution and to evaluate the biomechanical performance of the P-Plate by comparing it with a traditional plate (T-Plate). Then, the P-Plate was manufactured via electron beam melting and implanted into the foot of a patient. Increasing the size of the preliminary designed plate alleviated the stress concentration and reduced the risk of failure. The maximum stresses of the plate and screw (214.3 MPa, 99.05 MPa) and the maximum tensile force of the screw in the P-Plate (181.4 N) fixation system were lower than those in the T-Plate (217.4 MPa, 255.4 MPa, and 230.1 N, respectively). The P-Plate was well-matched to the bone, and no complications occurred. The P-Plate achieved American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society and Short-Form-36 scores of 64 and 75, respectively, 36 months post operation, which suggests that it could improve clinical outcomes. The design and fabrication methods, as well as mechanical and postoperative performance evaluation methods, for the P-Plate were systematically developed and provide a reference for constructing a unified application framework for P-Plate use in tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis.
