Investigation of Particle Rotation Characteristics and Compaction Quality Control of Asphalt Pavement Using the Discrete Element Method

The compaction of asphalt pavement is a crucial step to ensure its service life. Although intelligent compaction technology can monitor compaction quality in real time, its application to individual asphalt surface courses still faces limitations. Therefore, it is necessary to study the compaction mechanism of asphalt pavements from the particle level to optimize intelligent compaction technology. This study constructed an asphalt pavement compaction model using the Discrete Element Method (DEM). First, the changes in pavement smoothness during the compaction process were analyzed. Second, the changes in the angular velocity of the mixture and the triaxial angular velocity (TAV) of the mortar, aggregates, and mixture during vibratory compaction were examined. Finally, the correlations between the TAV amplitude and the coordination number (CN) amplitude with the compaction degree of the mixture were investigated. This study found that vibratory compaction can significantly reduce asymmetric wave deformation, improving pavement smoothness. The mixture primarily rotates in the vertical plane during the first six passes of vibratory compaction and within the horizontal plane during the seventh pass. Additionally, TAV reveals the three-dimensional dynamic rotation characteristics of the particles, and the linear relationship between its amplitude and the pavement compaction degree aids in controlling the compaction quality of asphalt pavements. Finally, the linear relationship between CN amplitude and pavement compaction degree can predict the stability of the aggregate structure. This study significantly enhances quality control in pavement compaction and advances intelligent compaction technology development.

A Review of Sisal Fiber-Reinforced Geopolymers: Preparation, Microstructure, and Mechanical Properties

The early strength of geopolymers (GPs) and their composites is higher, and the hardening speed is faster than that of ordinary cementitious materials. Due to their wide source of raw materials, low energy consumption in the production process, and lower emissions of pollutants, they are considered to have the most potential to replace ordinary Portland cement. However, similar to other inorganic materials, the GPs themselves have weak flexural and tensile strength and are sensitive to micro-cracks. Improving the toughness of GP materials can be achieved by adding an appropriate amount of fiber materials into the matrix. The use of discrete staple fibers shows great potential in improving the toughness of GPs. Sisal is a natural fiber that is reproducible and easy to obtain. Due to its good mechanical properties, low cost, and low carbon energy usage, sisal fiber (SF) is a GP composite reinforcement with potential development. In this paper, the research progress on the effect of SF on the properties of GP composites in recent decades is reviewed. It mainly includes the chemical composition and physical properties of SFs, the preparation technology of sisal-reinforced geopolymers (SFRGs), the microstructure analysis of the interface of SFs and the GP matrix, and the macroscopic mechanical properties of SFRGs. The properties of SFs make them have good bonding properties with the GP matrix. The addition of SFs can improve the flexural strength and tensile strength of GP composites, and SFRGs have good engineering application prospects.

Fresh Properties, Strength, and Durability of Fiber-Reinforced Geopolymer and Conventional Concrete: A Review

Reducing the environmental footprint of the construction industry in general and concrete in particular is essential. The addition of synthetic and natural fibers to concrete mixes at appropriate dosages enhances durability and strength and extends the lifespan of concrete infrastructures. This study reviews the geometric and mechanical properties of selected fibers such as steel, basalt, polypropylene, polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene, glass, carbon, and natural fibers and their impact on concrete fresh, mechanical, and durability properties when combined in different configurations. The study focuses on the effect of blending fibers with concrete mixes that use alkali-activated binders based on recycled industrial byproducts such as slag and fly ash and thereby contribute to reduction of CO2 contribution through complete or partial replacement of Ordinary Portland cement (OPC). As a result, the effect of binder content, binder composition, alkaline activator concentration, and water-to-binder (w/b) ratio on fresh properties, mechanical strength, and durability of concrete with blended fibers is also evaluated in this study. The properties of fiber-reinforced concrete with alkali-activated binder and conventional OPC binders are compared. Fiber-reinforced concrete with alkali-activated binders that are based on industrial byproducts may represent sustainable alternatives to conventional concrete and offers competitive fresh and mechanical properties when fiber properties, fiber content, w/b ratio, binder type, and dosage are carefully considered in concrete mix design.

Review of Geopolymer Nanocomposites: Novel Materials for Sustainable Development

The demand for geopolymer materials is constantly growing. This, in turn, translates into an increasing number of studies aimed at developing new approaches to the methodology of geopolymer synthesis. The range of potential applications of geopolymers can be increased by improving the properties of the components. Future directions of studies on geopolymer materials aim at developing geopolymers showing excellent mechanical properties but also demonstrating significant improvement in thermal, magnetic, or sorption characteristics. Additionally, the current efforts focus not only on the materials' properties but also on obtaining them as a result of environment-friendly approaches performed in line with circular economy assumptions. Scientists look for smart and economical solutions such that a small amount of the modifier will translate into a significant improvement in functional properties. Thus, special attention is paid to the application of nanomaterials. This article presents selected nanoparticles incorporated into geopolymer matrices, including carbon nanotubes, graphene, nanosilica, and titanium dioxide. The review was prepared employing scientific databases, with particular attention given to studies on geopolymer nanocomposites. The purpose of this review article is to discuss geopolymer nanocomposites in the context of a sustainable development approach. Importantly, the main focus is on the influence of these nanomaterials on the physicochemical properties of geopolymer nanocomposites. Such a combination of geopolymer technology and nanotechnology seems to be promising in terms of preparation of nanocomposites with a variety of potential uses.

The Influence of Fiber on the Mechanical Properties of Geopolymer Concrete: A Review

Geopolymer is widely used as a supplement to cementitious composites because of its advantages of low carbon and environmental protection, and geopolymer concrete is also broadly used in practical engineering. In recent years, geopolymer concrete has attracted increasing interest owing to its superior mechanical properties, and a series of research results have been obtained. In this paper, from the preparation of geopolymer concrete, based on the characteristics that geopolymer concrete is brittle and easy to crack, the types and basic properties of fibers to enhance the toughness of concrete are analyzed, the advantages and disadvantages of different fibers used as a material to enhance the toughness of concrete are summarized, and we review the effects of type, shape, volume rate, aspect ratio, and hybrid fiber combinations on the static mechanical properties. The results indicate that fibers have significant potential to enhance the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, and fracture toughness of geopolymer concrete, and the optimal fiber volume rate seems to be related to the fiber type. Whereas the effect of aspect ratio and hybrid fiber combinations on the properties of geopolymer concrete seems to be obvious. This paper reviews the influence of fiber on the basic mechanical properties of geopolymer concrete, which provides a solid foundation to promote the further development and application of the research on the toughness of fiber-reinforced geopolymer concrete and provides recommendations for future research.

Knowledge Mapping of the Literature on Fiber-Reinforced Geopolymers: A Scientometric Review

This study examined the bibliographic data on fiber-reinforced geopolymers (FRGPs) using scientometrics to determine their important features. Manual review articles are inadequate in their capability to connect various segments of literature in an ordered and systematic manner. Scientific mapping, co-citation, and co-occurrence are the difficult aspects of current research. The Scopus database was utilized to find and obtain the data needed to achieve the study's aims. The VOSviewer application was employed to assess the literature records from 751 publications, including citation, bibliographic, keyword, and abstract details. Significant publishing outlets, keywords, prolific researchers in terms of citations and articles published, top-cited documents, and locations actively participating in FRGP investigations were identified during the data review. The possible uses of FRGP were also highlighted. The scientometric analysis revealed that the most frequently used keywords in FRGP research are inorganic polymers, geopolymers, reinforcement, geopolymer, and compressive strength. Additionally, 27 authors have published more than 10 articles on FRGP, and 29 articles have received more than 100 citations up to June 2022. Due to the graphical illustration and quantitative contribution of scholars and countries, this study can support scholars in building joint ventures and communicating innovative ideas and practices.

A Review on the Incorporation of Diatomaceous Earth as a Geopolymer-Based Concrete Building Resource

The development of geopolymer building composites at a lower cost with a smaller carbon footprint may lessen the growing concerns about global warming brought on by emissions of a critical greenhouse gas (CO₂) paired with the high production costs in the cement sector. Diatomaceous earth, commonly used as an admixture or partial replacement of cement owing to its most effective pozzolanic properties, has been investigated as a precursor in geopolymer concrete development. Several studies have been examined to develop a greater understanding of its characterization, inclusion status, and impacts on the performance aspects of concrete. The literature review showed that using diatomaceous earth is one of the effective ways to create sustainable, insulating, lightweight building materials while minimizing the harmful economic and environmental effects of industrial solid wastes. However, since most studies have focused on its integration as a partial cement substitute or a replacement for fine aggregate, further research on diatomaceous earth-based clinker-free concrete is required. A lack of research on geopolymer concrete's reinforcement with either natural or synthetic fibers, or a combination of the two, was also discovered. This review also showed that there has been remarkably little effort made towards theoretical property correlation modeling for predicting concrete performance. It is anticipated that the detailed overview presented herein will guide potential researchers in defining their future paths in the study area.

Assessment of Artificial Intelligence Strategies to Estimate the Strength of Geopolymer Composites and Influence of Input Parameters

Geopolymers might be the superlative alternative to conventional cement because it is produced from aluminosilicate-rich waste sources to eliminate the issues associated with its manufacture and use. Geopolymer composites (GPCs) are gaining popularity, and their research is expanding. However, casting, curing, and testing specimens requires significant effort, price, and time. For research to be efficient, it is essential to apply novel approaches to the said objective. In this study, compressive strength (CS) of GPCs was anticipated using machine learning (ML) approaches, i.e., one single method (support vector machine (SVM)) and two ensembled algorithms (gradient boosting (GB) and extreme gradient boosting (XGB)). All models' validity and comparability were tested using the coefficient of determination (R2), statistical tests, and k-fold analysis. In addition, a model-independent post hoc approach known as SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) was employed to investigate the impact of input factors on the CS of GPCs. In predicting the CS of GPCs, it was observed that ensembled ML strategies performed better than the single ML technique. The R2 for the SVM, GB, and XGB models were 0.98, 0.97, and 0.93, respectively. The lowered error values of the models, including mean absolute and root mean square errors, further verified the enhanced precision of the ensembled ML approaches. The SHAP analysis revealed a stronger positive correlation between GGBS and GPC's CS. The effects of NaOH molarity, NaOH, and Na₂SiO₃ were also observed as more positive. Fly ash and gravel size: 10/20 mm have both beneficial and negative impacts on the GPC's CS. Raising the concentration of these ingredients enhances the CS, whereas increasing the concentration of GPC reduces it. Gravel size: 4/10 mm has less favorable and more negative effects. ML techniques will benefit the construction sector by offering rapid and cost-efficient solutions for assessing material characteristics.

Use of an Artificial Neural Network for Tensile Strength Prediction of Nano Titanium Dioxide Coated Cotton

In this study, an artificial neural network (ANN) is used for the prediction of tensile strength of nano titanium dioxide (TiO₂) coated cotton. The coating process was performed by ultraviolet (UV) radiations. Later on, a backpropagation ANN algorithm trained with Bayesian regularization was applied to predict the tensile strength. For a comparative study, ANN results were compared with traditional methods including multiple linear regression (MLR) and polynomial regression analysis (PRA). The input conditions for the experiment were dosage of TiO₂, UV irradiation time and temperature of the system. Simulation results elucidated that ANN model provides high performance accuracy than MLR and PRA. In addition, statistical analysis was also performed to check the significance of this study. The results show a strong correlation between predicted and measured tensile strength of nano TiO2-coated cotton with small error values.

Experimental Study on Axial Compressive Performance of Polyvinyl Alcohol Fibers Reinforced Fly Ash-Slag Geopolymer Composites

Geopolymer concrete (GC) has been gaining attention in research and engineering circles; however, it is a brittle material with poor tensile performance and crack resistance. To address these problems, we introduced fibers into GC. In this study, axial compression and scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests were carried out on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) short fiber reinforced low-calcium fly ash-slag-based geopolymer concrete (PFRGC). The ratio of PVA short fibers and low-calcium fly ash on the compression behavior of fiber reinforced geopolymer concrete (FRGC) were investigated and discussed. The test results show that PVA fibers play a bridging role in the cracks of the specimen and bear the load together with the matrix, so the addition of PVA fibers delayed the crack propagation of GC under axial compression. However, with the increase of low-calcium fly ash/PVA fibers, the number of unreacted fly ash particles in PFRGCs increases. Too many unreacted fly ash particles make GC more prone to micro-cracks during loading, adversely affecting compressive properties. Therefore, the axial compressive strength, elastic modulus, and Poisson’s ratio of GC decrease with the increasing low-calcium fly ash/PVA fibers.

Research on Compressive and Flexural Properties of Coal Gangue-Slag Geopolymer under Wetting-Drying Cycles and Analysis of Micro-Mechanism

Coal gangue-slag geopolymer is a kind of environment-friendly material with excellent engineering performance and is formed from coal gangue and slag after excitation by an alkaline activator. In this study, three kinds of coal gangue-slag geopolymer were activated by different activators, and the compressive and flexural strengths of water and sulphate solutions in the wetting-drying (W-D) cycles were compared. The microscopic mechanism was analyzed by the XRD, the FTIR and the SEM. The following conclusions are drawn: The influence of W-D cycles on flexural strength was greater than compressive strength. The water migration and the recombination of geopolymers lead to the change of colour, as well as the reduction of flexural strength and compressive strength of geopolymers. The SH geopolymer had excellent anti-erosion ability in terms of flexural strength, and the reason for this was the recombination and polymerization reaction of geopolymer being weaker than the SS and the SSG. The corrosion resistance of the SS was reflected in the compressive strength, because its geopolymerization reaction was fierce, which produced more Na-rich C–N–A–S–H, N–A–S–H and C–A–S–H gels. Therefore, the compressive strength could still reach more than 39 MPa after 150 cycles. Sulfate solution could effectively control the reduction of compressive strength of the SH and the SS geopolymers during W-D cycles. The SSG had the worst corrosion resistance.

Mechanical, Fracture, and Microstructural Assessment of Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Geopolymer Composites Containing Na2O

For a sustainable environment, geopolymer (GPO) paste can be used in the construction industry instead of Portland cement. Nowadays, sustainable construction and high-efficacy composites are demanding. Therefore, in the present investigation, the mechanical and microstructural efficacy of carbon-fiber-reinforced fly ash-based GPO with different percentages of nano-sodium dioxide (NS) were studied. The investigated percentages of NS were 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4%. For all the samples, the carbon fiber content was kept the same at 0.5% by weight. Different percentages of NS for all five fabricated GPO composite pastes were assessed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Various mechanical parameters of GPO—the compressive strength, toughness modulus, hardness, toughness indices, impact strength, fracture toughness, flexural strength, and elastic modulus—were evaluated. The results revealed that the use of 3% NS was the most effective for ameliorating the mechanical, microstructural, and fracture behavior of GPO. The use of 3% NS in carbon-fiber-reinforced GPO paste showed the maximum improvements of 22%, 46%, 30%, 40%, 14%, 38.4%, 50.2%, 31%, and 64% for the compressive strength, flexural strength, elastic modulus, toughness modulus, hardness, compressive stiffness, bending stiffness, fracture toughness, and impact strength, respectively. The SEM study showed that the inclusion of NS improved the microstructure and delivered a denser GPO paste by improving the interfacial zones and quickening the polymerization reaction.

Development and Characterization of Lightweight Geopolymer Composite Reinforced with Hybrid Carbon and Steel Fibers

The aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of hybrid fiber reinforcement on the properties of a lightweight fly ash-based geopolymer. The matrix includes the ratio of fly ash and microspheres at 1:1. Carbon and steel fibers have been chosen due to their high mechanical properties as reinforcement. Short steel fibers (SFs) and/or carbon fibers (CFs) were used as reinforcement in the following proportions: 2.0% wt. CFs, 1.5% wt. CFs and 0.5% wt. SFs, 1.0% wt. CFs and 1.0% wt. SFs, 0.5% wt. CFs and 1.5% wt. SFs and 2.0% wt. SFs. Hybrid reinforcement of geopolymer composites was used to obtain optimal strength properties, i.e., compressive strength due to steel fiber and bending strength due to carbon fibers. Additionally, reference samples consisting of the geopolymer matrix material itself. After the production of geopolymer composites, their density was examined, and the structure (using scanning electron microscopy) and mechanical properties (i.e., bending and compressive strength) in relation to the type and amount of reinforcement. In addition, to determine the thermal insulation properties of the geopolymer matrix, its thermal conductivity coefficient was determined. The results show that the addition of fiber improved compressive and bending strength. The best compressive strength is obtained for a steel fiber-reinforced composite (2.0% wt.). The best bending strength is obtained for the hybrid reinforced composite: 1.5% wt. CFs and 0.5% wt. SFs. The geopolymer composite is characterized by low thermal conductivity (0.18-0.22 W/m ∙ K) at low density (0.89-0.93 g/cm³).

Prediction of Methylene Blue Removal by Nano TiO2 Using Deep Neural Network

This paper deals with the prediction of methylene blue (MB) dye removal under the influence of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) through deep neural network (DNN). In the first step, TiO2 NPs were prepared and their morphological properties were analysed by scanning electron microscopy. Later, the influence of as synthesized TiO2 NPs was tested against MB dye removal and in the final step, DNN was used for the prediction. DNN is an efficient machine learning tools and widely used model for the prediction of highly complex problems. However, it has never been used for the prediction of MB dye removal. Therefore, this paper investigates the prediction accuracy of MB dye removal under the influence of TiO2 NPs using DNN. Furthermore, the proposed DNN model was used to map out the complex input-output conditions for the prediction of optimal results. The amount of chemicals, i.e., amount of TiO2 NPs, amount of ehylene glycol and reaction time were chosen as input variables and MB dye removal percentage was evaluated as a response. DNN model provides significantly high performance accuracy for the prediction of MB dye removal and can be used as a powerful tool for the prediction of other functional properties of nanocomposites.

The Influence of Short Coir, Glass and Carbon Fibers on the Properties of Composites with Geopolymer Matrix

The aim of the article is to analyze the influence of short coir, glass and carbon fiber admixture on the mechanical properties of fly ash-based geopolymer, such as: flexural and compressive strength. Glass fiber and carbon fibers have been chosen due to their high mechanical properties. Natural fibers have been chosen because of their mechanical properties as well as for the sake of comparison between their properties and the properties of the artificial ones. Fourth series of fly ash-based geopolymers for each fiber was cast: 1, 2, and 5% by weight of fly ash and one control series without any fibers. Each series of samples were tested on flexural and compressive strength after 7, 14, and 28 days. Additionally, microstructural analysis was carried out after 28 days. The results have shown an increase in compressive strength for composites with fibers—an improvement in properties between 25.0% and 56.5% depending on the type and amount of fiber added. For bending strength, a clear increase in the strength value is visible for composites with 1 and 2% carbon fibers (62.4% and 115.6%). A slight increase in flexural strength also occurred for 1% addition of glass fiber (4.5%) and 2% addition of coconut fibers (5.4%). For the 2% addition of glass fibers, the flexural strength value did not change compared to the value obtained for the matrix material. For the remaining fiber additions, i.e., 5% glass fiber as well as 1 and 5% coconut fibers, the flexural strength values deteriorated. The results of the research are discussed in a comparative context and the properties of the obtained composites are juxtaposed with the properties of the standard materials used in the construction industry.

Classification of Textile Polymer Composites: Recent Trends and Challenges

Polymer based textile composites have gained much attention in recent years and gradually transformed the growth of industries especially automobiles, construction, aerospace and composites. The inclusion of natural polymeric fibres as reinforcement in carbon fibre reinforced composites manufacturing delineates an economic way, enhances their surface, structural and mechanical properties by providing better bonding conditions. Almost all textile-based products are associated with quality, price and consumer’s satisfaction. Therefore, classification of textiles products and fibre reinforced polymer composites is a challenging task. This paper focuses on the classification of various problems in textile processes and fibre reinforced polymer composites by artificial neural networks, genetic algorithm and fuzzy logic. Moreover, their limitations associated with state-of-the-art processes and some relatively new and sequential classification methods are also proposed and discussed in detail in this paper.

Influence of Polyethylene Terephthalate Powder on Hydration of Portland Cement

The management of plastic waste is a massive challenge and the recycling of plastics for newer applications is a potential solution. This study investigates the feasibility of using polyethylene terephthalate (PET) powder in cementitious composites. The changes in the strength and microstructure of Portland cement incorporating PET powder with different replacement ratios were systematically analyzed through the measurements of compressive strength, isothermal calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and Raman spectroscopy. In addition, the possible chemical changes of cement paste samples were studied upon exposure to different conditions, including deionized water, seawater, and simulated pore solution. Based on the test results and analysis, no apparent chemical changes were observed in the cement paste samples, regardless of the exposure conditions. In contrast, the PET powder incorporated into concrete exhibited remarkable changes, which may have occurred during the mixing process. The results also suggested that the maximum replacement ratio of PET powder should be less than 10% of the binder (by mass) to minimize its influence on cement hydration, due to the interaction between water and PET. The PET-containing samples showed the presence of calcium aluminate hydrates which were absent in the neat paste sample.

Influence of the Composition and Curing Time on Mechanical Properties of Fluidized Bed Combustion Fly Ash-Based Geopolymer

This paper presents novel research on a fluidized bed combustion (FBC) fly ash-based geopolymer as a contribution to the problem of FBC fly ash disposal, and a proposal for a new geopolymer composition-an environmentally friendly material that is possible to use in construction. Geopolymer samples of various composition (containing FBC fly ash as the main raw material, metakaolin and CRT glass as additional components, and sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide as activators) were subjected to flexural and compressive strength tests. An investigation on the effect of the demolding time was carried out on one selected mixture. The test showed that both the composition and the demolding time have a decisive influence on the basic mechanical properties. A mixture containing FBC fly ash to metakaolin in a mass ratio of 3:1, removed from the mold after 14 days, was found to be the best in terms of the mechanical parameters expected from a material that could be used in construction, e.g., for the production of precast elements. According to the results obtained, FBC fly ash is a promising and environmentally friendly raw material for the production of geopolymer, with good mechanical properties and low density. Moreover, a high compressive strength can be obtained by curing the geopolymer at ambient temperature.

Combined Use of Modal Analysis and Machine Learning for Materials Classification

The present study deals with modal work that is a type of framework for structural dynamic testing of linear structures. Modal analysis is a powerful tool that works on the modal parameters to ensure the safety of materials and eliminate the failure possibilities. The concept of classification through this study is validated for isotropic and orthotropic materials, reaching up to a 100% accuracy when deploying the machine learning approach between the mode number and the associated frequency of the interrelated variables that were extracted from modal analysis performed by ANSYS. This study shows a new classification method dependent only on the knowledge of resonance frequency of a specific material and opens new directions for future developments to create a single device that can identify and classify different engineering materials.
