Improvement of Polytetrafluoroethylene Membrane High-Efficiency Particulate Air Filter Performance with Melt-Blown Media

Advanced and Smart Textiles during and after the COVID-19 Pandemic: Issues, Challenges, and Innovations

The COVID-19 pandemic has hugely affected the textile and apparel industry. Besides the negative impact due to supply chain disruptions, drop in demand, liquidity problems, and overstocking, this pandemic was found to be a window of opportunity since it accelerated the ongoing digitalization trends and the use of functional materials in the textile industry. This review paper covers the development of smart and advanced textiles that emerged as a response to the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2. We extensively cover the advancements in developing smart textiles that enable monitoring and sensing through electrospun nanofibers and nanogenerators. Additionally, we focus on improving medical textiles mainly through enhanced antiviral capabilities, which play a crucial role in pandemic prevention, protection, and control. We summarize the challenges that arise from personal protective equipment (PPE) disposal and finally give an overview of new smart textile-based products that emerged in the markets related to the control and spread reduction of SARS-CoV-2.

Comparison of the Silhouette of Virtual Clothes by Fabric Characteristics of Nylon Fabric for the Utilization of Virtual Clothes

In this study, various nylon fabrics were investigated to measure the physical properties of the actual fabric using Kawabata systems and CLO fabric kits, and the correlation between the physical and drape properties of the fabric was statistically analyzed. Subsequently, the CLO fabric kit results were used as basic data for the CLO three-dimensional (3D) virtual clothing program, and the drapeability of the virtual fabrics was measured. The factors with the most significant effect on the drape properties were analyzed by comparing the drape measurement of the real fabrics through the variable measurement of various fabrics and correlation analysis with the drape properties, and attempts were made to reduce the difference between real fabrics and their virtual implementations. The correlation analysis results revealed that both the Kawabata system and CLO fabric kit results indicated that the bending and shear properties exhibited the highest correlation with the drape ratio. In addition, the comparison of the real and virtual fabric images revealed that they exhibited a similar morphology. Furthermore, the results confirmed that the difference between the real and virtual fabrics could be reduced as much as possible when the values measured using the Kawabata system and CLO fabric kit were converted into a database. Subsequently, the differences between virtual fabrics with various thicknesses were confirmed through CLO 3D simulation. The findings of this study are expected to be used as basic data for building fabric database.

Development and Performance Evaluation of Polytetrafluoroethylene-Membrane-Based Automotive Cabin Air Filter

A high-efficiency, long-life cabin filter unit is required for the effective purification of the air inside a vehicle. However, conventional cabin air filters that utilize electrostatic effects are less efficient and less effective owing to environmental factors. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes exhibit a high porosity and surface-to-surface dust-removal performance, and maintain a stable pressure drop, indicating their good potential as filter materials. Therefore, in this study, the use of PTFE membranes for the fabrication of automobile filters and the filtration performance of the filters were examined. To this end, first, the properties of PTFE membranes mainly used in HEPA air conditioning filters and those of membranes used as vehicle cabin filters were compared. Next, the thickness, weight, stiffness, pore size, and filtration performance characteristics of filter media fabricated by blending melt-blown (MB) nonwoven, PTFE membranes, and supporting nonwoven into a total filtration layer were compared and analyzed. Lastly, the environmental change durability performance of the automobile cabin filter based on PTFE membrane and the results of the test after the installation of the filter in a vehicle were demonstrated.

Improved Recovery of Captured Airborne Bacteria and Viruses with Liquid-Coated Air Filters

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the importance of the detection of airborne pathogens. Here, we present composite air filters featuring a bioinspired liquid coating that facilitates the removal of captured aerosolized bacteria and viruses for further analysis. We tested three types of air filters: commercial polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which is well known for creating stable liquid coatings, commercial high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters, which are widely used, and in-house-manufactured cellulose nanofiber mats (CNFMs), which are made from sustainable materials. All filters were coated with omniphobic fluorinated liquid to maximize the release of pathogens. We found that coating both the PTFE and HEPA filters with liquid improved the rate at which Escherichia coli was recovered using a physical removal process compared to uncoated controls. Notably, the coated HEPA filters also increased the total number of recovered cells by 57%. Coating the CNFM filters did not improve either the rate of release or the total number of captured cells. The most promising materials, the liquid-coated HEPA, filters were then evaluated for their ability to facilitate the removal of pathogenic viruses via a chemical removal process. Recovery of infectious JC polyomavirus, a nonenveloped virus that attacks the central nervous system, was increased by 92% over uncoated controls; however, there was no significant difference in the total amount of genomic material recovered compared to that of controls. In contrast, significantly more genomic material was recovered for SARS-CoV-2, the airborne, enveloped virus, which causes COVID-19, from liquid-coated filters. Although the amount of infectious SARS-CoV-2 recovered was 58% higher, these results were not significantly different from uncoated filters due to high variability. These results suggest that the efficient recovery of airborne pathogens from liquid-coated filters could improve air sampling efforts, enhancing biosurveillance and global pathogen early warning.

Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene Coatings Deposited by a Spray Process: Mechanical Properties, Scratch and Wear Behavior

To increase the lifetime of metallic molds and protect their surface from wear, a fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) polymer was coated onto a stainless-steel (SS304) substrate, using an air spray process followed by a heat treatment. The microstructural properties of the coating were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) as well as X-ray diffraction. The mechanical properties and adhesion behavior were analyzed via a nanoindentation test and progressive scratching. According to the results, the FEP coating had a smooth and dense microstructure. The mechanical properties of the coatings, i.e., the hardness and Young’s modulus, were 57 ± 2.35 and 1.56 ± 0.07 GPa, respectively. During scratching, successive delamination stages (initiation, expansion, and propagation) were noticed, and the measured critical loads L_C1 (3.36 N), L_C2 (6.2 N), and L_C3 (7.6 N) indicated a high adhesion of the FEP coating to SS304. The detailed wear behavior and related damage mechanisms of the FEP coating were investigated employing a multi-pass scratch test and SEM in various sliding conditions. It was found that the wear volume increased with an increase in applied load and sliding velocity. Moreover, the FEP coating revealed a low friction coefficient (around 0.13) and a low wear coefficient (3.1 × 10⁻⁴ mm³ N m⁻¹). The investigation of the damage mechanisms of the FEP coating showed a viscoelastic plastic deformation related to FEP ductility. Finally, the coating’s resistance to corrosion was examined using electrochemical measurements in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The coating was found to provide satisfactory corrosion protection to the SS304 substrate, as no corrosion was observed after 60 days of immersion.
