From Insulating PMMA Polymer to Conjugated Double Bond Behavior: Green Chemistry as a Novel Approach to Fabricate Small Band Gap Polymers

Tumor-targeted nano-assemblies for energy-blocking cocktail therapy in cancer

Starvation therapy aims to "starve" tumor cells by cutting off their nutritional supply. However, due to the complex and varied energy metabolism of tumors, targeting a single nutrient supply often fails to yield significant therapeutic benefits. This study proposes a tumor energy cocktail therapy that combines metformin, an oxidative phosphorylation inhibitor, with 2-deoxy-d-glucose (2-DG), a glycolysis inhibitor, to target tumor cells. To minimize the dosage of both drugs, we have developed a drug delivery strategy that prepared metformin as a nanoderivative, denoted as MA-dots. These MA-dots not only preserve the antitumor properties of metformin but also serve as a targeted delivery platform for 2-DG, ensuring its direct reach to the tumor site. Upon reaching the acidic tumor environment, the composite disintegrates, releasing 2-DG to inhibit glycolysis by targeting hexokinase 2 (HK2), the key enzyme in glycolysis, while MA-dots inhibit mitochondrial OXPHOS. This dual action significantly reduces ATP production in tumor cells, leading to apoptosis. In human lung tumor cells, the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 2-DG@MA-dots was significantly lower than that of either metformin or 2-DG alone, showing a nearly 100-fold and 30-fold reduction in IC50 values to 11.78 µg mL-1, from 1159 µg mL-1 and 351.20 µg mL-1, respectively. In studies with A549 tumor-bearing mice, the combination of low-dose 2-DG and metformin did not impede tumor growth, whereas 2-DG@MA-dots markedly decreased tumor volume, with the mean final tumor volume in the combination treatment group being approximately 89 times greater than that in the 2-DG@MA-dot group. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Metformin is a promising antitumor agent capable of modulating mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation to inhibit cancer growth. However, its antitumor efficacy is limited when used alone due to compensatory energy mechanisms. Hence, we introduced glycolysis inhibitor 2-deoxy-d-glucose (2-DG) to inhibit an alternative tumor energy pathway. In our study, we developed a drug delivery strategy using metformin-derived nanomedicine (MA-dots) to load 2-DG. This approach enables the co-delivery of both drugs and their synergistic effect at the tumor site, disrupting both energy pathways and introducing an innovative "energy cocktail therapy".

PA12 Surface Treatment and Its Effect on Compatibility with Nutritional Culture Medium to Maintain Cell Vitality and Proliferation

This research investigates the suitability of printed polyamide 12 (PA12) and its dyed version to support cells in bioengineering applications. For this purpose, human gingival fibroblasts (hGF06) were cultured on PA-12 scaffolds that were 3D-printed by Multi Jet Fusion (MJF). The study examined the direct cultivation of cells on MJF-printed cell culture scaffolds and the effect of leachate of PA-12 printed by MJF on the cultured cells. The article presents research on the surface treatment of PA12 material used in 3D printing and the effect of automatic staining on cell vitality and proliferation in vitro. The study presents a unique device designed exclusively for staining prints made of the biocompatible material PA12 and demonstrates the compatibility of 3D-printed polyamide 12 parts stained in the novel device with a nutrient culture medium and cells. This novel PA12 surface treatment for biomedical purposes does not affect the compatibility with the culture medium, which is essential for cell viability and proliferation. Fluorescence microscopy revealed that mitochondrial fitness and cell survival were not affected by prolonged incubation with clear or dyed PA12 3D-printed parts.

Structural, dielectric, and antimicrobial evaluation of PMMA/CeO2 for optoelectronic devices

In the current report, we have successfully synthesized nanocomposites of PMMA incorporating different doping of CeO2 through a chemical approach. XRD results reflects decent matching for CeO2 nanoparticles with 29 nm crystallite size. FTIR spectroscopy demonstrates the characteristic functional groups validating the successful formation of the composite. The optical study of PMMA and the nanocomposites has proven that the optical properties such as band gap, refractive index, optical permittivity, and loss tangent factor are affected by adding CeO2 to the PMMA matrix.The peak residing around 420 nm by UV measurements is allocated to occurring electrons photoexcitation from the valence to conduction band inherent in CeO2. The dielectric measurements were achieved using broadband dielectric spectroscopy upon a wide span of frequencies (10-1-107 Hz) and within temperatures from - 10 to 80 °C with a step of 10 °C. The permittivity decreases by adding CeO2 and the dielectric parameters are thermally enhanced, however, the temperature influence is based on CeO2 content, the higher the CeO2 amount, the higher the influence of temperature. The results of the nanocomposites revealed antibacterial activity counter to gram-positive bacteria strain (S. aureus, and B. subtilis), and gram-negative bacteria (E. coli, and K. pneumoniae), yeast (C. albicans, as well as fungi (A. niger). Inherently, the change in CeO2 concentration from 0.01 to 0.1 wt% delivers maximum influence against gram-negative bacteria. These PMMA CeO2-doped composites are beneficial for optoelectronic areas and devices.

Flexible dispersion engineering using polymer patterning in nanophotonic waveguides

We demonstrate the engineering of waveguide dispersion by lithographically patterning the polymer cladding on silicon nitride waveguide resonators. Both normal and anomalous dispersion, ranging from - 462 to 409 ps/nm/km, can be achieved for the same waveguide dimension within an integrated photonic chip. In the meantime, this simple process shows no impact on the waveguide loss and the quality factor of the waveguide resonators, offering flexibility in tailoring designable dispersion for a universal photonic platform. In addition, by adjusting the coverage ratio of cladding, relatively low dispersion (≈ - 130 ps/nm/km) is also demonstrated in the same waveguide resonator, yielding the potentials for zero-dispersive waveguide resonators by a proper coverage ratio of the polymer cladding.

Antibacterial Activity of the Green Synthesized Plasmonic Silver Nanoparticles with Crystalline Structure against Gram-Positive and Gram-Negative Bacteria

Nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted considerable interest in numerous fields, including agriculture, medicine, the environment, and engineering. The use of green synthesis techniques that employ natural reducing agents to reduce metal ions and form NPs is of particular interest. This study investigates the use of green tea (GT) extract as a reducing agent for the synthesis of silver NPs (Ag NPs) with crystalline structure. Several analytical techniques, including UV-visible spectrophotometry, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), were used to characterize the synthesized Ag NPs. The results of UV-vis revealed that the biosynthesized Ag NPs exhibited an absorbance plasmonic resonance peak at 470 nm. According to FTIR analyses, the attachment of Ag NPs to polyphenolic compounds resulted in a decrease in intensity and band shifting. In addition, the XRD analysis confirmed the presence of sharp crystalline peaks associated with face-centered cubic Ag NPs. Moreover, HR-TEM revealed that the synthesized particles were spherical and 50 nm in size on average. The Ag NPs demonstrated promising antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive (GP) bacteria, Brevibacterium luteolum and Staphylococcus aureus, and Gram-negative (GN) bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli, with a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 6.4 mg/mL for GN and 12.8 mg/mL for GP. Overall, these findings suggest that Ag NPs can be utilized as effective antimicrobial agents.

Variation in the Optical Properties of PEO-Based Composites via a Green Metal Complex: Macroscopic Measurements to Explain Microscopic Quantum Transport from the Valence Band to the Conduction Band

In this study, a green chemistry method was used to synthesize polymer composites based on polyethylene oxide (PEO). The method of the remediation of metal complexes used in this study is an environmentally friendly procedure with a low cost. Zinc metal ion (Zn²⁺)-polyphenol (PPHNL) complexes were synthesized for two minutes via the combination of a black tea leaf (BTL) extract solution with dissolved Zn-acetate. Then, UV-Vis and FTIR were carried out for the Zn-PPHNL complexes in a liquid and solid. The FTIR spectra show that BTLs contain sufficient functional groups (O-H, C-H, C=O, C=C, C-O, C-N, and N-H), PPHNL, and conjugated double bonds to produce metal complexes by capturing the cations of Zn-acetate salt. Moreover, FTIR of the BTL and Zn-PPHNL complexes approves the formation of the Zn-PPHNL complex over the wide variation in the intensity of bands. The UV absorption spectra of BTL and Zn-PPHNL indicate complex formation among tea PPHNL and Zn cations, which enhances the absorption spectra of the Zn-PPHNL to 0.1 compared to the figure of 0.01 associated with the extracted tea solution. According to an XRD analysis, an amorphous Zn-PPHNL complex was created when Zn²⁺ ions and PPHNL interacted. Additionally, XRD shows that the structure of the PEO composite becomes a more amorphous structure as the concentration of Zn-PPHNL increases. Furthermore, morphological study via an optical microscope (OM) shows that by increasing the concentration of Zn-PPHNL in a PEO polymer composite the size of the spherulites ascribed to the crystalline phase dramatically decreases. The optical properties of PEO: Zn-PPHNL films, via UV-Vis spectroscopy, were rigorously studied. The E_g is calculated by examining the dielectric loss, which is reduced from 5.5 eV to 0.6 eV by increasing the concentration of Zn-PPHNL in the PEO samples. In addition, Tauc's form was used to specify the category of electronic transitions in the PEO: Zn-PPHNL films. The impact of crystalline structure and morphology on electronic transition types was discussed. Macroscopic measurable parameters, such as the refractive index and extinction coefficient, were used to determine optical dielectric loss. Fundamental optical dielectric functions were used to determine some key parameters. From the viewpoint of quantum transport, electron transitions were discussed. The merit of this work is that microscopic processes related to electron transition from the VB to the CB can be interpreted interms of measurable macroscopic quantities.

Large-scale production of polyimide micropore-based flow cells for detecting nano-sized particles in fluids

In diagnostic and sequencing applications, solid-state nanopores hold significant promise as a single-molecule sensing platform. The fabrication of precisely sized pores has traditionally been challenging, laborious, expensive, and inefficient, which has limited its applications until recently. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes a novel, reliable, cost-effective, portable, mass-productive, robust, and ease-of-use micropore flow cell that works based on the resistive pulse sensor (RPS) technique in order to distinguish the different sizes of c nanoparticles. RPS is a robust and informative technique that can provide valuable details of the size, shape, charge, and individual particle concentrations in the media. By femtosecond laser drilling of a polyimide substrate as an alternate material, translocation of 100, 300, and 350 nm polystyrene nanoparticles in PBS buffer was distinguished by 0.1, 1, and 2 nA current blockade levels, respectively. This is the first time a micropore has been opened in a polyimide membrane using a femtosecond laser in a single step. The experimental and theoretical investigation, scanning electron microscopy and focused ion beam spectroscopy were performed to comprehensively explain the micropore's performance. We showed that our innovative micropore-based flow cell could distinguish nano-sized particles in fluids, and it can be used in large-scale production because of its simplicity and cost-effectiveness.

Blister formation in dynamic release mirror structures using femtosecond laser pulses

Blister formation occurs when a laser pulse interacts with the underside of a polymer film on a glass substrate and is fundamental in Laser-Induced Forward Transfer (LIFT). We present a novel method of controlling blister formation using a thin metal film situated between two thin polymer films. This enables a wide range of laser pulse energies by limiting the laser penetration in the film, which allows us to exploit nonlinear interactions without transmitting high intensities that may destroy a transfer material. We study blisters using a helium ion microscope, which images their interiors, and find that laser energy deposition is primarily in the metal layer and the top polymer layer remains intact. Blister expansion is driven by laser-induced spallation of the gold film. Our work shows that this technique could be a viable platform for contaminant-free LIFT using nonlinear absorption beyond the diffraction limit.

Optical and morphological properties of ZnO and Alq3 incorporated polymeric thin layers fabricated by the dip-coating method

In this report, we present the influence of polymer matrix on morphological and optical properties of thin films containing zinc oxide (ZnO), tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato)aluminium (Alq3) and ZnO:Alq3. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) dissolved in isopropanol and tetrahydrofuran, respectively, were used as polymeric matrices of fabricated composites. The analysed thin layers were deposited on Si substrates using a dip-coating method and characterized by Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Energy-Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Spectroscopic Ellipsometry (SE) and photoluminescence (PL). It was found that adding the polymer to Alq3 causes a blueshift in absorption compared to pure Alq3 layers. We also observed photoluminescence in the region of 2.2–2.8 eV for ZnO:Alq3:PMMA and ZnO:Alq3:PVP, as well as for Alq3:PMMA at room temperature. PL measurements showed that adding ZnO to Alq3:polymer matrix did not result in any shift in PL spectra compared to the results of Alq3:polymer layer. AFM and SEM measurements show that relatively smooth films were obtained in the case of composites based on PVP and PMMA. Moreover, a change in the size of ZnO agglomerates depending on polymer used is observed for the three-component layers. We also noticed that the values of the refractive index are higher for the samples in the PVP matrix. However, the opposite behaviour was observed in the case of the extinction coefficient.

Gamma induced changes in Makrofol/CdSe nanocomposite films

We applied an ex-situ casting procedure to prepare a nanocomposite (NCP) from Makrofol polycarbonate (PC) and CdSe nanoparticles. The CdSe nanoparticles were prepared by a thermolysis procedure in the presence of N2 gas flow. Rietveld refinement of x-ray data illustrated that the CdSe adopts a cubic zinc blend structure of 6.057 Å lattice parameter and 2 nm typical grain size. Samples from the prepared NCP were exposed to γ dosages (20 kGy–250 kGy). The modifications induced in the NCP films owing to γ dosages have been studied. The γ irradiation (50 kGy–250 kGy) causes crosslinks that reduce the optical bandgap from 4.15 eV to 3.81 eV, associated with an increase in dielectric parameters and refractive index. This is attributed to an increase in the mass fraction of the disordered regions as specified by x-ray diffraction. The PC–CdSe NCP was found to have a reaction to color modification which makes it suitable for saleable reproduction on a printing press.

2D Materials (WS2, MoS2, MoSe2) Enhanced Polyacrylamide Gels for Multifunctional Applications

Multifunctional polymer composite gels have attracted attention because of their high thermal stability, conductivity, mechanical properties, and fast optical response. To enable the simultaneous incorporation of all these different functions into composite gels, the best doping material alternatives are two-dimensional (2D) materials, especially transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD), which have been used in so many applications recently, such as energy storage units, opto-electronic devices and catalysis. They have the capacity to regulate optical, electronic and mechanical properties of basic molecular hydrogels when incorporated into them. In this study, 2D materials (WS₂, MoS₂ and MoSe₂)-doped polyacrylamide (PAAm) gels were prepared via the free radical crosslinking copolymerization technique at room temperature. The gelation process and amount of the gels were investigated depending on the optical properties and band gap energies. Band gap energies of composite gels containing different amounts of TMD were calculated and found to be in the range of 2.48–2.84 eV, which is the characteristic band gap energy range of promising semiconductors. Our results revealed that the microgel growth mechanism and gel point of PAAm composite incorporated with 2D materials can be significantly tailored by the amount of 2D materials. Furthermore, tunable band gap energies of these composite gels are crucial for many applications such as biosensors, cartilage repair, drug delivery, tissue regeneration, wound dressing. Therefore, our study will contribute to the understanding of the correlation between the optical and electronic properties of such composite gels and will help to increase the usage areas so as to obtain multifunctional composite gels.

Low-Cost Cranioplasty—A Systematic Review of 3D Printing in Medicine

The high cost of biofabricated titanium mesh plates can make them out of reach for hospitals in low-income countries. To increase the availability of cranioplasty, the authors of this work investigated the production of polymer-based endoprostheses. Recently, cheap, popular desktop 3D printers have generated sufficient opportunities to provide patients with on-demand and on-site help. This study also examines the technologies of 3D printing, including SLM, SLS, FFF, DLP, and SLA. The authors focused their interest on the materials in fabrication, which include PLA, ABS, PET-G, PEEK, and PMMA. Three-dimensional printed prostheses are modeled using widely available CAD software with the help of patient-specific DICOM files. Even though the topic is insufficiently researched, it can be perceived as a relatively safe procedure with a minimal complication rate. There have also been some initial studies on the costs and legal regulations. Early case studies provide information on dozens of patients living with self-made prostheses and who are experiencing significant improvements in their quality of life. Budget 3D-printed endoprostheses are reliable and are reported to be significantly cheaper than the popular counterparts manufactured from polypropylene polyester.

Structural, Thermal, and Optical Studies of Gamma Irradiated Polyvinyl Alcohol-, Lignosulfonate-, and Palladium Nanocomposite Film

Nanocomposite (NC) films of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), lignosulfonate (Lg), and nanosized palladium (Pd) were synthesized by ex-situ casting method. Samples from the synthesized PVA-Lg/Pd NC films were irradiated with 5–100 kGy γ doses. The effect of γ doses on the structural, thermal, and optical characteristics of the NC films were studied using different characterization techniques. The results indicated that the γ irradiation improves the decomposition temperature from 227 to 239 °C, signifying an increase in the thermal stability of the NC films. This was accompanied by a reduction of the melting temperature due to the increase of the amorphous phase. This can be attributed to the dominance of crosslinking. On the other hand, the refractive index increased from 2.21 to 2.32 while increasing the γ dose up to 100 kGy. This was associated with a reduction of the optical bandgap from 3.49 to 3.30 eV, which could be attributed to the increase in the amorphous phase as a result of crosslinking. This indicates an enhancement of the spreading of the NPs inside the blend matrix due to γ irradiation. This results in a more compacted construction of the PVA-Lg/Pd NC films. Furthermore, we used the Commission Internationale de E’Claire (CIE) method to estimate the change in color among the irradiated NC films and the pristine film. The PVA-Lg/Pd NC attained a significant color difference value greater than five, meaning permanent color changes.

Impact of Charge Transfer Complex on the Dielectric Relaxation Processes in Poly(methyl methacrylate) Polymer

The impact of the charge transfer complex on the dielectric relaxation processes in free poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) polymer sheets was investigated. The frequency dependence of dielectric properties was obtained over the frequency range 0.1 Hz–1 MHz at temperatures ranging between 303 K and 373 K for perylene dye and acceptors (picric acid (PA) and chloranilic acid (CLA)) in an in situ PMMA polymer. The TG/dTG technique was used to investigate the thermal degradation of the synthesized polymeric sheets. Additionally, the kinetic parameters have been assessed using the Coats–Redfern relation. The dielectric relaxation spectroscopy of the synthesized polymeric sheets was analyzed in terms of complex dielectric constant, dielectric loss, electrical modulus, electrical conductivity, and Cole–Cole impedance spectroscopy. α- and β-relaxation processes were detected and discussed. The σ(ω) dispersion curves of the synthesized polymeric sheets show two distinct regions with increasing frequency. The impedance data of the synthesized polymeric sheets can be represented by the equivalent circuit (parallel RC).

Innovative Green Chemistry Approach to Synthesis of Sn2+-Metal Complex and Design of Polymer Composites with Small Optical Band Gaps

In this work, the green method was used to synthesize Sn²⁺-metal complex by polyphenols (PPHs) of black tea (BT). The formation of Sn²⁺-PPHs metal complex was confirmed through UV-Vis and FTIR methods. The FTIR method shows that BT contains NH and OH functional groups, conjugated double bonds, and PPHs which are important to create the Sn²⁺-metal complexes. The synthesized Sn²⁺-PPHs metal complex was used successfully to decrease the optical energy band gap of PVA polymer. XRD method showed that the amorphous phase increased with increasing the metal complexes. The FTIR and XRD analysis show the complex formation between Sn²⁺-PPHs metal complex and PVA polymer. The enhancement in the optical properties of PVA was evidenced via UV-visible spectroscopy method. When Sn²⁺-PPHs metal complex was loaded to PVA, the refractive index and dielectric constant were improved. In addition, the absorption edge was also decreased to lower photon. The optical energy band gap decreases from 6.4 to 1.8 eV for PVAloaded with 30% (v/v) Sn²⁺-PPHs metal complex. The variations of dielectric constant versus wavelength of photon are examined to measure localized charge density (N/m*) and high frequency dielectric constant. By increasing Sn²⁺-PPHs metal complex, the N/m* are improved from 3.65 × 10⁵⁵ to 13.38 × 10⁵⁵ m⁻³ Kg⁻¹. The oscillator dispersion energy (E_d) and average oscillator energy (E_o) are measured. The electronic transition natures in composite films are determined based on the Tauc’s method, whereas close examinations of the dielectric loss parameter are also held to measure the energy band gap.

Preparation and Biocompatibility of Poly Methyl Methacrylate (PMMA)-Mesoporous Bioactive Glass (MBG) Composite Scaffolds

In recent years, the rising number of bone diseases which affect millions of people worldwide has led to an increased demand for materials with restoring and augmentation properties that can be used in therapies for bone pathologies. In this work, PMMA- MBG composite scaffolds containing ceria (0, 1, 3 mol%) were obtained by the phase separation method. The obtained composite scaffolds were characterized by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. UV-Vis measurement and EDX analysis confirmed the presence of cerium ions in the composite scaffolds. Evaluation of the in-vitro biocompatibility using MTT assay showed that composite scaffold containing 1 mol% of ceria presented higher viability than control cells (100%) for concentrations ranging between 5 and 50% after 96 h of incubation.

Synthesis and Study of the Optical Properties of PMMA Microspheres and Opals

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres were synthesized by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization. These microspheres were used to obtain opals by the self-assembly method. Monomer and initiator quantities were varied systematically to monitor the size of PMMA microspheres. From SEM and DLS measurements, a trend was observed showing as the monomer and initiator amounts increased the average diameter of PMMA microspheres increased except when a minimum monomer amount was reached, for which the size of the microspheres remained practically constant. Diffuse reflectance spectra were processed by the Kubelka–Munk treatment to estimate the energy band gap (E_g) of the PMMA microspheres. It was found that PMMA microspheres present an indirect transition. From SEM micrographs, it is seen that PMMA opals photonic crystals are formed by microspheres in a uniform periodic face-centered cubic (fcc) array. Variable-angle specular reflectance spectra show that the opals possess a pseudo photonic band gap (PBG) in the visible and near-IR regions. Furthermore, it was found that PBGs shift towards larger wavelengths as the average diameter of the PMMA microspheres increases.

Synthesis, Optical, Chemical and Thermal Characterizations of PMMA-PS/CeO2 Nanoparticles Thin Film

We report the synthesis of hybrid thin films based on polymethyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) doped with 1%, 3%, 5%, and 7% of cerium dioxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs). The As-prepared thin films of (PMMA-PS) incorporated with CeO2 NPs are deposited on a glass substrate. The transmittance T% (λ) and reflectance R% (λ) of PMMA-PS/CeO2 NPs thin films are measured at room temperature in the spectral range (250-700) nm. High transmittance of 87% is observed in the low-energy regions. However, transmittance decreases sharply to a vanishing value in the high-energy region. In addition, as the CeO2 NPs concentration is increased, a red shift of the absorption edge is clearly observed suggesting a considerable decrease in the band gap energy of PMMA-PS/CeO2 NPs thin film. The optical constants (n and k) and related key optical and optoelectronic parameters of PMMA-PS/Ce NPs thin films are reported and interpreted. Furthermore, Tauc and Urbach models are employed to elucidate optical behavior and calculate the band gaps of the as-synthesized nanocomposite thin films. The optical band gap energy of PMMA-PS thin film is found to be 4.03 eV. Optical band gap engineering is found to be possible upon introducing CeO2 NPs into PMMA-PS polymeric thin films as demonstrated clearly by the continuous decrease of optical band gap upon increasing CeO2 content. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis is conducted to identify the major vibrational modes of the nanocomposite. The peak at 541.42 cm-1 is assigned to Ce-O and indicates the incorporation of CeO2 NPs into the copolymers matrices. There were drastic changes to the width and intensity of the vibrational bands of PMMA-PS upon addition of CeO2 NPs. To examine the chemical and thermal stability, thermogravimetric (TGA) thermograms are measured. We found that (PMMA-PVA)/CeO2 NPs nanocomposite thin films are thermally stable below 110 °C. Therefore, they could be key candidate materials for a wide range of scaled multifunctional smart optical and optoelectronic devices.

Elemental sulphur in the synthesis of sulphur-containing polymers: reaction mechanisms and green prospects

The synthesis of polymers using elemental sulphur as a chemical agent has been studied in relation to the worldwide overproduction of cyclo-octasulphur. Herein, the mechanisms of the processes leading to the inclusion of elemental sulphur into macromolecules have been reviewed and the main methods for reduction of the reaction temperature required for the S8 ring opening have been shown. Approaches to the activation of cyclo-octasulphur in the synthesis and macromolecule cross-linking reactions were discussed in the context of finding the chemical agents and conditions that satisfy the principles of green chemistry.

Tea from the drinking to the synthesis of metal complexes and fabrication of PVA based polymer composites with controlled optical band gap

In the present study black tea extract (BTE) solution which is familiar for drinking was used to prepare cerium metal-complexes (Ce(III)-complex). The prepared Ce(III)-complex was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and UV–Vis spectroscopy. The results indicate that BTE solution is a novel green coordination chemistry approach for the synthesis of metal complexes. The outcomes signify that coordination occurs between cerium cations and polyphenols. The synthesis of metal-complexes with superior absorption performance in the visible region is a challenge for optoelectronic device applications. The suspended Ce(III)-complex in distilled water was mixed with poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) polymer to fabricate PVA/ Ce(III)-complex composites with controlled optical properties. The PVA/Ce(III)-complexes composite films were characterized by FTIR, XRD, and UV–Vis spectroscopy. The XRD findings confirms the amorphous structure for the synthesized Ce(III)-complexes. The addition of Ce(III)-complex into the PVA host polymer led to the growth of polymer composites with controllable small optical band gaps. It is shown by the FTIR spectra of the composite films that the functional groups of the host PVA have a vigorous interaction with the Ce(III)-complex. The XRD deconvolution on PVA composites reveals the amorphous phase enlargement with increasing Ce(III)-complex concentration. It is indicated in the atomic force microscopy (AFM) that the surface roughness in the doped PVA films increases with the increase of the Ce(III)-complex. There is a decrease in absorption edge from 5.7 to 1.7 eV. It becomes possible to recognize the type of electron transition by studying both the Tauc's model and optical dielectric loss (ɛ_i) parameter.

Steps Toward the Band Gap Identification in Polystyrene Based Solid Polymer Nanocomposites Integrated with Tin Titanate Nanoparticles

In the current study, the film fabrication of polystyrene (PS) based polymer nanocomposites (NCs) with tuned refractive index and absorption edge was carried out using the solution cast method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) light characterization techniques were performed. The structural and optical properties of the prepared films were specified. The hump of PS decreased significantly when SnTiO₃ nanoparticles (NPs) were introduced. Sharp and high intense peaks of SnTiO₃ NPs at a high filler ratio were observed. The crystalline size was determined for SnTiO₃ NPs from the sharp crystalline peaks using Debye-Scherrer’s equation and was found to be 25.179 nm, which is close enough to that described by the supplier. Several optical parameters, such as absorption coefficient (α), refractive index (n), and optical dielectric properties, were investigated. The absorption spectra were tuned with increasing SnTiO₃NPs. Upon the addition of the NPs to the PS host polymer, the absorption edge undergoes shifting to lesser photon energy sides. The optical dielectric constant (ε′) was correlated to the refractive index. The study of the optical band gap was conducted in detail using both Tauc’s model and the optical dielectric loss (ε″) parameter. The results showed that the ε″ parameter is noteworthy to be measured in the optical band gap study of materials.

A Comprehensive Review on Optical Properties of Polymer Electrolytes and Composites

Polymer electrolytes and composites have prevailed in the high performance and mobile marketplace during recent years. Polymer-based solid electrolytes possess the benefits of low flammability, excellent flexibility, good thermal stability, as well as higher safety. Several researchers have paid attention to the optical properties of polymer electrolytes and their composites. In the present review paper, first, the characteristics, fundamentals, advantages and principles of various types of polymer electrolytes were discussed. Afterward, the characteristics and performance of various polymer hosts on the basis of specific essential and newly published works were described. New developments in various approaches to investigate the optical properties of polymer electrolytes were emphasized. The last part of the review devoted to the optical band gap study using two methods: Tauc's model and optical dielectric loss parameter. Based on recently published literature sufficient quantum mechanical backgrounds were provided to support the applicability of the optical dielectric loss parameter for the band gap study. In this review paper, it was demonstrated that both Tauc's model and optical dielectric loss should be studied to specify the type of electron transition and estimate the optical band gap accurately. Other parameters such as absorption coefficient, refractive index and optical dielectric constant were also explored.

The strategy for controlling COVID-19 in Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)/Iraq: Identification, epidemiology, transmission, treatment, and recovery

This study has carried out a mini-review on first wave of COVID-19 infection and its control by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)/Iraq. COVID-19 infection, which was named by the International Committee of Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) as SARS-CoV-2, is a newly identified coronavirus. The last century has seen the outbreak of numerous life-threatening human pathogens including Nipah, Ebola, Zika, Chikungunya, Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), and more recently a novel coronavirus has been observed. COVID-19 infection has so far spread to more than 186 countries around the world and KRG/Iraq has not been free from this virus. In this survey, the control of COVID-19 infection in KRG as a part of Iraq is discussed in detail. The methods of identification as well as the drugs that are currently in common use to reduce the wide distribution of COVID-19 infection and their effects in countries around the world are considered. So far, 714 positive cases have been reported by the ministry of health in Kurdistan Region Government-Iraq (KRG), among which there have been only 8 deaths, and 420 cases have recovered. Those who died had a previous history of a chronic disease such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and hypercholesteremia. Alternative medicine based on natural green methods has been widely used by Kurdish people in past years for treatment of strong coughs. In the present study, some natural products which are cost free and effective in enhancing the body's resistance against the virus are considered. A surprising finding is that the patients in KRG have not in general had a severe cough, flu, or fever. The possible explanation may relate to the patients' strong immune systems, since none of them had a history of using alcohol and drugs, or of chronic disease. The epidemiology and transmission of the virus are discussed as well.

Fabrication of Interconnected Plasmonic Spherical Silver Nanoparticles with Enhanced Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) Peaks Using Quince Leaf Extract Solution

Interconnected spherical metallic silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were synthesized in the current study using a green chemistry method. The reduction of silver ions to Ag NPs was carried out with low-cost and eco-friendly quince leaves. For the first time, it was confirmed that the extract solution of quince leaves could be used to perform green production of Ag NPs. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was conducted to identify the potential biomolecules that were involved in the Ag NPs. The results depicted that the biosynthesis of Ag NPs through the extract solution of quince leaf was a low-cost, clean, and safe method, which did not make use of any contaminated element and hence, had no undesirable effects. The majority of the peaks in the FTIR spectrum of quince leaf extracts also emerged in the FTIR spectrum of Ag NPs but they were found to be of less severe intensity. The silver ion reduction was elaborated in detail on the basis of the FTIR outcomes. In addition, through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, the Ag NPs were also confirmed to be crystalline in type, owing to the appearance of distinct peaks related to the Ag NPs. The creation of Ag NPs was furthermore confirmed by using absorption spectrum, in which a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak at 480 nm was observed. The LSPR peak achieved in the present work was found to be of great interest compared to those reported in literature. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images were used to provide the morphology and grain size of Ag NPs. It was shown from the FESEM images that the Ag NPs had interconnected spherical morphology.

Structural Characterization, Antimicrobial Activity, and In Vitro Cytotoxicity Effect of Black Seed Oil

This study was aimed to investigate the structure of bioactive components of black seed oil (BSO) and their antimicrobial and cytotoxic effects. Initially, the structural examination was conducted using various spectroscopic techniques, such as FTIR, TLC, and UV-visible spectroscopy, which are important in determining substituents, functional groups, and the presence of conjugated double bonds in BSO. From the FTIR spectra, a variety of sharp, strong, and weak peaks were specified relating to the main components of thymoquinone (TQ), dithymoquinone, thymohydroquinone, and thymol in BSO. The results of UV-visible spectroscopy confirmed the presence of thymoquinone as a major compound, and conjugated double bonds were also found. In addition, qualitative TLC analysis was used to identify thymoquinone from the methanol-extracted layer in BSO, by calculating the retention factor (R f) value. Furthermore, antimicrobial activity of BSO was studied against various types of bacteria. Strong bacterial inhibitory effects were observed, especially against Bacillus subtilis, with an average inhibition zone of 15.74 mm. Moreover, through the use of the MTT assay in vitro, it was shown that BSO does not exhibit any cytotoxicity towards human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). It was also found from the structural characterization of BSO that the existence of TQ is responsible for potential antibacterial activity without any cytotoxic effects. The main observation of this work is that BSO has antimicrobial activity even against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

From Green Remediation to Polymer Hybrid Fabrication with Improved Optical Band Gaps

The present work proposed a novel approach for transferring high-risk heavy metals tometal complexes via green chemistry remediation. The method of remediation of heavy metals developed in the present work is a great challenge for global environmental sciences and engineering because it is a totally environmentally friendly procedure in which black tea extract solution is used. The FTIR study indicates that black tea contains enough functional groups (OH and NH), polyphenols and conjugated double bonds. The synthesis of copper complex was confirmed by the UV-vis, XRD and FTIR spectroscopic studies. The XRD and FTIR analysis reveals the formation of complexation between Cu metal complexes and Poly (Vinyl Alcohol) (PVA) host matrix. The study of optical parameters indicates that PVA-based hybrids exhibit a small optical band gap, which is close to inorganic-based materials. It was noted that the absorption edge shifted to lower photon energy. When Cu metal complexes were added to PVA polymer, the refractive index was significantly tuned. The band gap shifts from 6.2 eV to 1.4 eV for PVA incorporated with 45 mL of Cu metal complexes. The nature of the electronic transition in hybrid materials was examined based on the Taucs model, while a close inspection of the optical dielectric loss was also performed in order to estimate the optical band gap. The obtained band gaps of the present work reveal that polymer hybrids with sufficient film-forming capability could be useful to overcome the drawbacks associated with conjugated polymers. Based on the XRD results and band gap values, the structure-property relationships were discussed in detail.

Reducing the Crystallite Size of Spherulites in PEO-Based Polymer Nanocomposites Mediated by Carbon Nanodots and Ag Nanoparticles

The PEO-based polymer nanocomposites were prepared by solution cast method. Green approaches were used for synthesis of carbon nanodots (CNDs) and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). It was found that the crystallite size of spherulites of PEO was greatly scarified upon incorporation of CNDs and Ag NPs. In the present work, in opposition to other studies, broadening of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak of metallic Ag NPs in PEO-based polymer composites was observed rather than peak tuning. Various techniques, such as powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL), were used to characterize the structural, morphological, and optical properties of the samples. Increase of amorphous phase for the PEO doped with CND particles was shown from the results of XRD analyses. Upon the addition of suspended Ag NPs to the PEO:CNDs composites, significant change of XRD peak position was seen. A field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) was used to investigate the surface morphology of the samples. In the SEM, a significant change in the crystalline structure was seen. The size of PEO spherulites in the PEO nanocomposite samples became smaller and the percentage of amorphous portion became larger, owing to the distribution of CNDs and Ag NPs. The UV-Vis absorption spectra of the PEO-based polymer were found to improve and shift to higher wavelengths upon incorporation of CNDs and Ag NPs into the PEO matrix. The SPR peak broadening in the UV-Vis spectra was observed in the PEO:CNDs composites due to the Ag NPs. The absorption edge value of PEO was found to shift toward lower photon energy as the CNDs and Ag NPs are introduced. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra were also observed for the PEO:CNDs and PEO:CNDs:Ag samples and found to be more intense in the PEO:CNDs system than in the PEO:CNDs:Ag system. Lastly, the optical band gap of the samples was further studied in detail using of Tauc's model and optical dielectric loss parameter. The types of electron transition were specified.

Structural and Optical Characteristics of PVA:C-Dot Composites: Tuning the Absorption of Ultra Violet (UV) Region

: In this work the influence of carbon nano-dots (CNDs) on absorption of ultra violet (UV) spectra in hybrid PVA based composites was studied. The FTIR results reveal the complex formation between PVA and CNDs. The shifting was observed in XRD spectrum of PVA:CNDs composites compared to pure PVA. The Debye-Scherrer formula was used to calculate the crystallite size of CNDs and crystalline phases of pure PVA and PVA:CNDs composites. The FESEM images emphasized the presence and dispersion of C-dots on the surface of the composite samples. From the images, a strong and clear absorption was noticed in the spectra. The strong absorption that appeared peaks at 280 nm and 430 nm can be ascribed to the n-π* and π-π* transitions, respectively. The absorption edge shifted to lower photon energy sides with increasing CNDs. The luminescence behavior of PVA:CNDs composite was confirmed using digital and photo luminescence (PL) measurements. The optical dielectric constant which is related to the density of states was studied and the optical band gap was characterized accurately using optical dielectric loss parameter. The Taucs model was used to determine the type of electronic transition in the samples.
