Flotation in Water and Wastewater Treatment

Co-flotation of effluents from detergent and marble processing industries in Denver and dispersed air flotation systems

Suspended solids in the marble processing wastewater (MPWW) have the potential to pollute receiving media. Likewise, detergent production wastewater (DPWW) needs treatment prior to discharge as they include surfactants and others. Flotation and its modifications are common for separation purposes in various engineering solutions. To increase flotation performance by changing the surface tension some collector and frother chemicals, surfactants are utilized. Detergents are among important surfactants and they may act as both frother and collector in flotation. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of DPWW in co-flotation with MPWW. Two effluents were mixed at varying ratios and dispersed air (DISP) and Denver (DEN) flotation co-treatment were applied to the mixtures. Volume ratio, time and air flow rate on treatment performance were investigated. Turbidity, solids, COD, phosphate removals were achieved at varying levels when the flotation was applied to the mixture. The highest treatment performance was achieved at 90%MPWW-10%DPWW mixture. 10 min flotation time and 2 L min-1 air flow rate for the DEN system, and 20 min and 6 L min-1 for the DISP system were recommended. Under these conditions turbidity, SS, COD, phosphate and alkalinity residuals (and removal efficiencies) were 2400 NTU(82%), 1720 mg.L-1(89%), 313.6 mg.L-1(10%), 20 mg.L-1(20%) and 600 mg.L-1CaCO3(92%) in the DEN system, respectively. Whereas, in the DISP system, under the same conditions, final values of 1880 NTU(86%), 1540 mg.L-1(91%), 262 mg.L-1(17%), 21 mg.L-1(20%) and 470 mg.L-1(94%) were obtained, respectively. The highest SludgeSS concentration increased up to 19300 mg.L-1 in the 90%-10% mixture. In all samples, dewaterable sludge was obtained. By this study, co-flotation of these two effluents was recommended. Within SDGs, this approach will replace frother chemical usage. The process performance can further be enhanced via flotation modifications and technology can be developed as further study.

Microplastics in aquatic systems: An in-depth review of current and potential water treatment processes

Plastic products, despite their undeniable utility in modern life, pose significant environmental challenges, particularly when it comes to recycling. A crucial concern is the pervasive introduction of microplastics (MPs) into aquatic ecosystems, with deleterious effects on marine organisms. This review presents a detailed examination of the methodologies developed for MPs removal in water treatment systems. Initially, investigating the most common types of MPs in wastewater, subsequently presenting methodologies for their precise identification and quantification in aquatic environments. Instruments such as scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and Raman tweezers stand out as powerful tools for studying MPs. The discussion then transitions to the exploration of both existing and emergent techniques for MPs removal in wastewater treatment plants and drinking water treatment plants. This includes a description of the core mechanisms that drive these techniques, with an emphasis on the latest research developments in MPs degradation. Present MPs removal methodologies, ranging from physical separation to chemical and biological adsorption and degradation, offer varied advantages and constraints. Addressing the MPs contamination problem in its entirety remains a significant challenge. In conclusion, the review offers a succinct overview of each technique and forwards recommendations for future research, highlighting the pressing nature of this environmental dilemma.

Assessment of characteristics and treatment processes of wastewater from slaughterhouses in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil

The state of Minas Gerais is one of Brazil's largest animal protein producers, and its slaughterhouses generate highly polluting wastewater, which needs to be treated for discharge or reuse. As a novelty, this review article focused on assessing the characteristics and methods to treat wastewater from slaughterhouses in the state of Minas Gerais, and verifying its compliance with environmental regulatory agencies. The aim was to present data that helps to better manage this residue in other Brazilian states and countries. By analyzing the literature data, it was found that raw slaughterhouse wastewater (SWW) showed a high concentration of organic matter. For most SWW, the BOD5/COD ratio was above 0.4, which implies that it can be treated biologically. Generally, treated wastewater was in accordance with legal discharge standards, considering COD and BOD5 removals above 70% and 75%, respectively. It was found that wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) consisted of some type of pretreatment (screens, grease traps) to remove coarse solids and fatty material, eventually followed by a flotation step and finally by biological processes, mostly anaerobic and/or aerated (or facultative) ponds. However, the absence of an aerobic process at the end of the treatment in some WWTPs, in addition to a system allowing better removal of biological flocs, might be the reason for ammoniacal nitrogen and suspended solids values being above the allowed maximum in treated wastewater, respectively. Besides the discharge into water bodies, it was verified that fertigation using treated SWW is very common in the state of Minas Gerais.

Plants, animals, and fisheries waste-mediated bioremediation of contaminants of environmental and emerging concern (CEECs)-a circular bioresource utilization approach

The release of contaminants of environmental concern including heavy metals and metalloids, and contaminants of emerging concern including organic micropollutants from processing industries, pharmaceuticals, personal care, and anthropogenic sources, is a growing threat worldwide. Mitigating inorganic and organic contaminants, which can be coined as contaminants of environmental and emerging concern (CEECs), is a big challenge as traditional physicochemical processes are not economically viable for managing mixed contaminants of low concentrations. As a result, low-cost materials must be designed to provide high CEEC removal efficiency. One of the environmentally viable and energy-efficient approaches is biosorption, which involves using biomass or biopolymers isolated from plants or animals to decontaminate heavy metals in contaminated environments using inherent biological mechanisms. Among chemical constituents in plant biomass, cellulose, lignin, hemicellulose, proteins, polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, and animal biomass include polysaccharides and other compounds to bind heavy metals covalently and non-covalently. These functional groups include carboxyl, hydroxyl, carbonyl, amide, amine, and sulfhydryl. Cation-exchange capacities of these bioadsorbents can be improved by applying chemical modifications. The relevance of chemical constituents and bioactives in biosorbents derived from agricultural production such as food and fodder crops, bioenergy and cash crops, fruit and vegetable crops, medicinal and aromatic plants, plantation trees, aquatic and terrestrial weeds, and animal production such as dairy, goatery, poultry, duckery, and fisheries is highlighted in this comprehensive review for sequestering and bioremediation of CEECs, including as many as ten different heavy metals and metalloids co-contaminated with other organic micropollutants in circular bioresource utilization and one-health concepts.

The physics of dancing peanuts in beer

In Argentina, some people add peanuts to their beer. Once immersed, the peanuts initially sink part way down into the beer before bubbles nucleate and grow on the peanut surfaces and remain attached. The peanuts move up and down within the beer glass in many repeating cycles. In this work, we propose a physical description of this dancing peanuts spectacle. We break down the problem into component physical phenomena, providing empirical constraint of each: (i) heterogeneous bubble nucleation occurs on peanut surfaces and this is energetically preferential to nucleation on the beer glass surfaces; (ii) peanuts enshrouded in attached bubbles are positively buoyant in beer above a critical attached gas volume; (iii) at the beer top surface, bubbles detach and pop, facilitated by peanut rotations and rearrangements; (iv) peanuts containing fewer bubbles are then negatively buoyant in beer and sink; and (v) the process repeats so long as the beer remains sufficiently supersaturated in the gas phase for continued nucleation. We used laboratory experiments and calculations to support this description, including constraint of the densities and wetting properties of the beer-gas-peanut system. We draw analogies between this peanut dance cyclicity and industrial and natural processes of wide interest, ultimately concluding that this bar-side phenomenon can be a vehicle for understanding more complex, applied systems of general interest and utility.

Facile Strategy for Fabricating an Organosilica-Modified Fe3O4 (OS/Fe3O4) Hetero-nanocore and OS/Fe3O4@SiO2 Core-Shell Structure for Wastewater Treatment with Promising Recyclable Efficiency

The development of a sustainable process for heavy metal ion remediation has become a point of interest in various fields of research, including wastewater treatment, industrial development, and health and environmental safety. In the present study, a promising sustainable adsorbent was fabricated through continuous controlled adsorption/desorption processes for heavy metal uptake. The fabrication strategy is based on a simple modification of Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles with organosilica in a one-pot solvothermal process, carried out in order to insert the organosilica moieties into the Fe₃O₄ nanocore during their formation. The developed organosilica-modified Fe₃O₄ hetero-nanocores had hydrophilic citrate moieties, together with hydrophobic organosilica ones, on their surfaces, which facilitated the further surface coating procedures. To prevent the formed nanoparticles from leaching into the acidic medium, a dense silica layer was coated on the fabricated organosilica/Fe₃O₄ (OS/Fe₃O₄). In addition, the prepared OS/Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ was utilized for the adsorption of cobalt(II), lead(II), and manganese(II) from the solutions. The data for the adsorption processes of cobalt(II), lead(II), and manganese(II) on OS/(Fe₃O₄)@SiO₂ were found to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating the fast uptake of heavy metals. The Freundlich isotherm was found to be more suitable for describing the uptake of heavy metals by OS/Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ nanoparticles. The negative values of the ΔG° showed a spontaneous adsorption process of a physical nature. The super-regeneration and recycling capacities of the OS/Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ were achieved, comparing the results to those of previous adsorbents, with a recyclable efficiency of 91% up to the seventh cycle, which is promising for environmental sustainability.

Special wettable Azadirachta indica leaves like microarchitecture mesh filtration membrane produced by galvanic replacement reaction for layered oil/water separation

The oil/water separation has received significant attention due to its critical environmental impact. The special wettable surfaces are highly desired to deal with the oil/water mixtures. This work demonstrates a simple two-step method to develop a superhydrophobic Azadirachta indica leaves like Ag-decorated electrochemically copper-coated stainless-steel mesh (SH-AIL-Ag-EC-Cu-Mesh) for efficient separation of oil/water mixtures. In the first step, the electrodeposition of the copper took place on the mesh surface at a suitable applied potential. In the second step, the galvanic replacement reaction between the Ag⁺ and electrodeposited Cu produced the fascinating superhydrophobic Ag leaves on the mesh surface. The SH-AIL-Ag-EC-Cu-Mesh was thoroughly characterized by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX), elemental mapping, surface wettability analysis, and the contact analyzer. The morphological analysis has shown the unique leafy structures of the reduced Ag on the surface of the mesh. The XPS analysis has confirmed that most of the Ag present on the surface is in zerovalent form. The combination of the electrodeposition and the displacement reaction between the copper and the silver turned the surface superhydrophobic, and the water contact angle was significantly improved from 115° to 158°. The designed SH-AIL-Ag-EC-Cu-Mesh has shown excellent selectivity for oil in oil/water mixtures with a separation efficiency of 99.1% with an exceptionally high flux of 8963 L m^-2h^-1. The SH-AIL-Ag-EC-Cu-Mesh has shown excellent reusability, and after 15 cycles of separation, no significant decrease in the oil/water separation efficiency was observed.

Life Cycle Assessment and Its Application in Wastewater Treatment: A Brief Overview

This paper provides a brief review on wastewater treatment system and the application of life cycle assessment (LCA) for assessing its environmental performance. An extensive review regarding the geographical relevance of LCA for WWTPs, and the evaluation of sustainable wastewater treatment by LCA in both developed and developing countries are also discussed. The objective of the review is to identify knowledge gap, for the improvement of the LCA application and methodology to WWTPs. A total of 35 published articles related to wastewater treatment (WWT) and LCA from international scientific journals were studied thoroughly and summarised from 2006 to 2022. This review found that there is lack of studies concerning LCA of WWTPs that consider specific local criteria especially in the developing countries. Thus, it is important to: (1) assess the influence of seasonality (i.e., dry and wet seasons) on the environmental impact of WWT, (2) investigate environmental impacts from WWTPs in developing countries focusing on the site-specific inventory data, and (3) evaluate environmental sustainability of different processes for upgrading the wastewater treatment system. The environmental impact and cost assessment aspects are crucial for the sustainable development of WWTP. Therefore, environmental impacts must be thoroughly assessed to provide recommendation for future policy and for the water industry in determining environmental trade-offs toward sustainable development.

Cosmetic wastewater treatment technologies: a review

Over the past three decades, environmental concerns about the water pollution have been raised on societal and industrial levels. The presence of pollutants stemming from cosmetic products has been documented in wastewater streams outflowing from industrial as well as wastewater treatment plants. To this end, a series of consistent measures should be taken to prevent emerging contaminants of water resources. This need has driven the development of technologies, in an attempt to mitigate their impact on the environment. This work offers a thorough review of existing knowledge on cosmetic wastewater treatment approaches, including, coagulation, dissolved air flotation, adsorption, activated sludge, biodegradation, constructed wetlands, and advanced oxidation processes. Various studies have already documented the appearance of cosmetics in samples retrieved from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which have definitely promoted our comprehension of the path of cosmetics within the treatment cycle; however, there are still multiple blanks to our knowledge. All treatments have, without exception, their own limitations, not only cost-wise, but also in terms of being feasible, effective, practical, reliable, and environmentally friendly.

Removal of Benzene and Toluene from Synthetic Wastewater by Adsorption onto Magnetic Zeolitic Imidazole Framework Nanocomposites

Considering the risk associated with exposure to benzene and toluene in water resources, researchers have been motivated to conduct studies to remove them from aqueous solutions. Thus, by performing the present study, the potential of Fe₃O₄/zeolite imidazolate framework nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄@ZIF-8) was evaluated for the adsorption of benzene and toluene. Accordingly, the solution pH, Fe₃O₄@ZIF-8 dosage, mixing time, concentration of benzene and toluene, and temperature, were the parameters considered for conducting the batch experiments, for which their effect on adsorption efficiency was evaluated. Our conducted experiments introduced the neutral pH as the best pH range to obtain the maximum removal. Fitting the adsorption data into the various models revealed the aptness of the Langmuir isotherm equation in describing experimental information and highest adsorption capacity; for benzene it was 129.4, 134.2, 137.3, and 148.2 mg g^-1, but for toluene it was 118.4, 125.2, 129.6, and 133.1 mg g^-1, for temperature 20, 30, 40, and 50 °C, respectively. Using obtained optimal conditions, the adsorption efficiencies of benzene and toluene were obtained to be 98.4% and 93.1%, respectively. Kinetic studies showed acceptable coefficients for PSO kinetics and confirmed its suitability. Also, the recyclability results showed that for six consecutive periods of the adsorption-desorption process, the percentage of removal decreased by only 6% for benzene and toluene. Moreover, calculating thermodynamic parameter changes for benzene and toluene removal confirmed the favorability and spontaneity of the studied process and its endothermic nature. Considering the above findings, Fe₃O₄@ZIF-8 was found to be an operative adsorbent for removing pollutants.

pH and pCl Operational Parameters in Some Metallic Ions Separation with Composite Chitosan/Sulfonated Polyether Ether Ketone/Polypropylene Hollow Fibers Membranes

The development of new composite membranes is required to separate chemical species from aggressive environments without using corrective reagents. One such case is represented by the high hydrochloric acid mixture (very low pH and pCl) that contains mixed metal ions, or that of copper, cadmium, zinc and lead ions in a binary mixture (Cu-Zn and Cd-Pb) or quaternary mixture. This paper presents the obtaining of a composite membrane chitosan (Chi)-sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (sPEEK)-polypropylene hollow fiber (Chi/sPEEK/PPHF) and its use in the separation of binary or quaternary mixtures of copper, cadmium, zinc, and lead ions by nanofiltration and pertraction. The obtained membranes were morphologically and structurally characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution SEM (HR-SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis (EDAX), Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC), but also used in preliminary separation tests. Using the ion solutions in hydrochloric acid 3 mol/L, the separation of copper and zinc or cadmium and lead ions from binary mixtures was performed. The pertraction results were superior to those obtained by nanofiltration, both in terms of extraction efficiency and because at pertraction, the separate cation was simultaneously concentrated by an order of magnitude. The mixture of the four cations was separated by nanofiltration (at 5 bars, using a membrane of a 1 m² active area) by varying two operational parameters: pH and pCl. Cation retention could reach 95% when adequate values of operational parameters were selected. The paper makes some recommendations for the use of composite membranes, chitosan (Chi)-sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (sPEEK)-polypropylene hollow fiber (Chi/sPEEK/PPHF), so as to obtain the maximum possible retention of the target cation.

A review of graphene-based semiconductors for photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in wastewater

Water is the lifeblood of all living things; we often overlook the fact that the water cycle and the life cycle are inextricably linked. However, it has become contaminated as a result of industrialization, which has impacted the ecosystem by emitting numerous dyes, organic solvents, petroleum products, heavy metals, chemicals, diseases, and solid wastes. The absence of treatment in reusing wastewater is the root of the issues. Hence it is essential to treat the water to preserve the ecosystem and also for human health. In recent years, graphene-based photocatalysts are attracted much in the waste water treatment process due to their outstanding physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. Since in the graphene-based photocatalyst, graphene has exceptional electron conductivity, a broad range of light absorption, a large surface area, and a high adsorption capacity. When it is integrated into metals, metal-containing nanocomposites, semiconductor nanocomposites, polymers, MXene, and other compounds, it can greatly boost the photocatalytic activity towards the photo destruction of contaminants. Hence in this review, water pollution, methods of waste water treatment, fundamental principles of photocatalysis, the photocatalytic activity of other materials in wastewater treatment, and how the photocatalytic efficiency against the removal of organic dyes can be enhanced when coalesced with graphene are detailed.

Sustainable adsorbents for the removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewater: A review

Over the previous three decades, the worldwide use of pharmaceuticals has surged by more than 2.5 times. Although being considered essential to save many lives, pharmaceuticals have also emerged as a large source of complex environmental contaminants in recent decades. Consequently, the pharmaceuticals and their breakdown products are ending up into the water bodies thus progressively contaminating them and the surrounding environments. Based on recent studies concentrations in water sources are typically >0.1 μg/l and the concentration in treated water is typically >0.05 μg/l. These pharma drugs are removed from aquatic systems by processes such as oxidation, Ultraviolet degradation, reverse osmosis and nano-filtration. However, hazardous sludge creation, incomplete removal, expensive capital and operating costs, and the need for professional operating and maintenance personnel have all limited the economic sustainability of these systems. As a result, the presence of pharmaceuticals in water necessitates even more advanced technologies of purification to harvest clean water, yet present approaches are constrained by their high costs, low reusability, and disposal issues. Here, we review sustainable adsorbents for the removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewater. In this comprehensive review, an evaluation of water contamination caused by pharmaceutical compounds is discussed. An overview of current research on the employment of sustainable adsorbents for the removal of the major pharmaceuticals prevalent in water sources. Numerous aspects of high adsorption efficiencies of these pharmaceutical compounds with such sustainable adsorbents were observed; however, other factors, such as adsorbent regeneration and cost evaluation, must be taken into account in order to assess the true applicability of adsorbents.

Protein nanofibrils as versatile and sustainable adsorbents for an effective removal of heavy metals from wastewater: A review

Water is a valuable natural resource, which plays a crucial role in ecological survival as well as economic progress. However, the water quality has deteriorated in recent years as a result of urbanization, industrialization and human activities due to the uncontrolled release of industrial wastes, which can be extremely carcinogenic and non-degradable, in air, water and soil bodies. Such wastes showed the presence of organic and inorganic pollutants in high dosages. Heavy metals are the most obstinate contaminants, and they can be harmful because of having a variety of detrimental consequences to the ecosystem. The existing water treatment methods in many situations may not be sustainable or effective because of their high energy requirements and ecological impacts. In this review, state-of-the-art water treatment methods for the elimination of heavy metals with the help of protein nanofibrils are covered featuring a discussion on the strategies and possibilities of developing protein nanofibrils for the active elimination of heavy metals using kitchen waste as well as residues from the cattle, agriculture, and dairy industries. Further, the emphasis has been given to their environmental sustainability and economical aspects are also discussed.

Photocatalytic Decomposition of an Azo Dye Using Transition-Metal-Doped Tungsten and Molybdenum Carbides

The preparation, characterization, and photocatalytic application of tungsten or molybdenum carbides (Ni-WC, 1, Co-WC, 2, Ni-MoC, 3, Co-MoC, 4, NiCo-WC, 5, NiCo-MoC, 6, NiFe-WC, 7, and NiFe-MoC, 8) doped with transition metals (Fe, Co, and Ni) are reported. These transition-metal carbide (TMC) particles show that the submicrometer globular particles agglomerated to form larger particles, with smaller crystallites present on the surface of the large particles. These crystallite sizes range between 4 and 34 nm (as calculated from X-ray diffraction data) depending on the metal dopant and type of carbide. Oxidation of the metal carbides is evident from the two sets of photoelectron lines present in the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of the W 4f area. The Mo 3d spectra reveal four sets of photoelectron lines associated with oxidized MoO₂ and MoO₃ as well as Mo²⁺ and Mo³⁺ associated with MoC_1-x . The XPS of the dopant metals Ni, Co, and Fe also show partial oxidation. The photocatalytic decomposition of Congo red (an azo dye) is used as a model reaction to determine the photocatalytic activities of the transition-metal carbides, which is related to the TMCs' optical band gap energies.

Nanosponges for Water Treatment: Progress and Challenges

Nanosponges have shown promising capabilities for efficient removal of organic/inorganic pollutants from water based on absorption/adsorption and disinfection processes. The application of nanosponges (especially cyclodextrin-based nanosponges) can be considered a cost-effective strategy with minimal energy and time requirements in comparison to other routinely deployed water treatment modalities. These polymers with unique physicochemical properties, architectures, and highly cross-linked three-dimensional networks need to be further explored for removing pollutants with simultaneous eliminations of microbial contaminants from wastewater. Additionally, the surface functionalization of these nanosponges utilizing magnetic, titanium dioxide, and silver nanomaterials can significantly improve their properties for water remediation purposes, although nanosponges altered with carbon nanotubes and metallic nanomaterials/nanocatalysts for water treatment appliances are barely explored. Notably, crucial factors such as adsorbent type/dosage, contact time, competing ions, adsorption isotherm models, kinetics, thermodynamics, and reaction/experimental conditions (e.g., molar ratios, temperature, and pH) are important aspects affecting the adsorption and removal of pollutants using nanosponges. Furthermore, the nanotoxicity and biosafety of these nanosponge-based systems utilized for water treatment should be comprehensively evaluated. Herein, recent advancements in the design and deployment of nanosponge-based systems for removing organic/inorganic pollutants from water and wastewater are deliberated with an emphasis on challenges and perspectives.

Sustainable and efficient technologies for removal and recovery of toxic and valuable metals from wastewater: Recent progress, challenges, and future perspectives

Due to their numerous effects on human health and the natural environment, water contamination with heavy metals and metalloids, caused by their extensive use in various technologies and industrial applications, continues to be a huge ecological issue that needs to be urgently tackled. Additionally, within the circular economy management framework, the recovery and recycling of metals-based waste as high value-added products (VAPs) is of great interest, owing to their high cost and the continuous depletion of their reserves and natural sources. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art technologies developed for the removal and recovery of metal pollutants from wastewater by providing an in-depth understanding of their remediation mechanisms, while analyzing and critically discussing the recent key advances regarding these treatment methods, their practical implementation and integration, as well as evaluating their advantages and remaining limitations. Herein, various treatment techniques are covered, including adsorption, reduction/oxidation, ion exchange, membrane separation technologies, solvents extraction, chemical precipitation/co-precipitation, coagulation-flocculation, flotation, and bioremediation. A particular emphasis is placed on full recovery of the captured metal pollutants in various reusable forms as metal-based VAPs, mainly as solid precipitates, which is a powerful tool that offers substantial enhancement of the remediation processes' sustainability and cost-effectiveness. At the end, we have identified some prospective research directions for future work on this topic, while presenting some recommendations that can promote sustainability and economic feasibility of the existing treatment technologies.

Study on the removal of hazardous Congo red from aqueous solutions by chelation flocculation and precipitation flotation process

Dyes are intensively used in textile and dyeing industries, and substantial volumes of organic wastewater with residual dye require treatment before discharges to public waterways. Flotation separation is an efficient and widely used method for the treatment of massive organic dye wastewaters. The key scientific problems for dye flotation separation lie in the mineralization transformation of dissolved dye to tangible flocs. In this work, a high-efficiency removal of hazardous azo dye Congo red (CR) from simulated wastewaters via metal ions chelation flocculation followed by flotation separation was proposed. It's demonstrated that CR can be chelated by the trivalent metal ions, including Al(III), Fe(III), and its mixture to form hydrophobic flocs, and then the flocs were efficiently removed via flotation in a microbubble column. The effects of chelation flocculation and flotation separation conditions on the removal efficiencies of CR, COD, and chromaticity from CR simulated wastewaters were optimized. Chelation effect of CR by trivalent metal ions was in this order: Al(III)+Fe(III)>Fe(III)>Al(III). The chelation mechanism suggested that CR molecules gradually changed from hydrazones to electronegative azo with the increase of pH to 6-7, and electrostatic attraction between the Al₃(OH)₄⁵⁺ or Fe(OH)₂⁺ with the CR was favorable for the chelation reaction, in which the metal ions chelated with N atoms on naphthalene ring and amino groups of CR. Over 99% CR was removed under the optimal chelation and flotation conditions: chelation by composite Al(III)/Fe(III) with a concentration of 25 mg/L at pH of 7 for 25min; followed by flotation with SDS concentration of 20 mg/L and air flow rate of 50 mL/min for 20min. Under this condition, the COD and chromaticity removal efficiency were over 96% and 98%, respectively, and the turbidity was lower than 0.1 NTU, meeting the water discharge requirement. Eventually, resourceful utilization of flotation sludge via calcination was conducted to prepare Al-Fe spinel refractory material.

Layered double hydroxide-modified membranes for water treatment: Recent advances and prospects

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) represent an exciting class of two-dimensional inorganic materials with unique physicochemical properties. They have been widely employed in water treatment due to their high surface areas, excellent ion exchange capacities, and highly tunable structures. They have also been employed in the fabrication and development of membranes for water treatment. 2D nanostructures as well as tailorable "structure forming units", surface functionalization with desired moieties, and interlayer galleries with adjustable heights and internal compositions make them attractive materials for membrane separations. This paper critically overviews the recent advancements in the synthesis and applications of LDH based membranes in water purification. The synthesis techniques and the effect of LDH incorporation into different membrane compositions have been described. LDH-based membranes showed excellent antifouling capability and improved water flux due to enhanced hydrophilicity. Such membranes have been successfully used for the treatment of inorganics, organics from environmental water samples. This review will be useful for understanding the current state of the LDH-based membranes for water purification and defining future research dimensions. In the end, we highlight some challenges and future prospects for the efficient application of LDH-based membranes in water decontamination.

Recent advancements in the removal/recovery of toxic metals from aquatic system using flotation techniques

The paramount cause of water scarcity is pollution, which is becoming a massive issue since the last century. Besides, it is evident that water pollution is the main cause of emerging contaminants that are left untreated from industries, can cause serious threats to humans and biota as well. One of the best ways in remediating pollutants and finding a way for generating useable water is to use this contaminated water after the necessary treatment. Heavy metals are of major concern in treatment because of their toxicity, non-biodegradability, carcinogenicity, and they can cause inevitable damages even at low concentrations. In this review article, available different flotation techniques are discussed to address this issue. Flotation tends to be one of the promising techniques that have shown a high scope because of its high produce, low sludge formation, and ease of operation. From the several pieces of literature, it can be inferred that the flotation process can be conducted in one step, and that does not need any expensive materials. Further, this paper deliberates the versatility of each process in disclosing its advantages, limitations, further scope of research and fills the loopholes in the process for better effectiveness. Overall, flotation is a highly probable as well as effective treatment technology to eradicate noxious pollutants present in wastewater and thus helps to compromise environmental and social sustainability.

Sustainable approach on removal of toxic metals from electroplating industrial wastewater using dissolved air flotation

This research paper concentrates on the removal of heavy metal from wastewater which was produced from an electroplating industry. Here, the Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) treatment process is carried out to remove toxic metals such as chromium, cadmium, nickel, lead, and copper using Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) as a collector. The best-optimized conditions for the maximum removal of all the metal ions about 97.39% was achieved at pH 8, contact time of 60 min, surfactant dosage of 0.2 g, and the pressure of 137.89 kPa. At optimized conditions, the treated water consists of 2.71 mg/L of chromium, 1.13 mg/L of cadmium, 10.24 mg/L of nickel, 0.06 mg/L of lead, and 1.14 mg/L of copper. The used surfactant SDS was found as an environmentally friendly compound as prescribed by the Environmental Protection Agency. It is inferred that the flotation kinetics that manifests the rate of recovery and time for all the metal ions follow first-order kinetics. Further, the removal rate constant (k) increases with decreasing the initial metal ion concentration. Overall, the result of this work propounds that the DAF process plays as a promising technique to eliminate noxious pollutants from the wastewater.

Pretreatment of industrial wastewater by natural flotation: application to pollution reduction from vegetable oil refinery wastewaters

The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the natural flotation process in reducing pollution with reasonable investment and operating costs of an industrial effluent of refining vegetable oils. Flotation tests were carried out in separating funnels and in drums of 30 l. The results obtained have shown that the volume of sludge produced during flotation is related to the pollutant load of the wastewater studied (process wastewater and acidic wastewater). The sludge volume is respectively 600, 12, and 120 ml/l for heavy, light, and medium loads respectively. Therefore, it is essential to find an effective way to remove oils and greases from polluted waters. Natural flotation eliminates on average 88% of COD for acid wastewater and 50% for process wastewater. However, the reduction of BOD5 showed 28 and 43% respectively for acid wastewater and process wastewater. In addition, the yield of fats and oils, TSS, and turbidity varies around 85%, 45%, and 88% respectively for acidic wastewater, while for process wastewater, elimination yields vary around 58%, 46%, and 46% respectively for the grease and oil parameters, the MES, and the turbidity. Flotation allows the elimination of 10659 Kg/day of greases and oils for process wastewater while it eliminates 5765 Kg/day for acidic wastewater. This reduces the cost of treatment related to chemicals and energy. Reducing pollution of wastewater by natural flotation could therefore help reduce the costs of treating wastewater, and recycling would then be more attractive for this purpose for the company.

Heavy metals biosorption mechanism of partially delignified products derived from mango (Mangifera indica) and guava (Psidium guiag) barks

This paper evaluates the biosorption of toxic metal ions onto the bioadsorbents derived from mango (Mangifera indica) and guava (Psidium guiag) barks and their metal fixation mechanisms. Maximum metal biosorption capacities of the mango bioadsorbent were found in the following increasing order (mg/g): Hg (16.24) < Cu (22.24) < Cd (25.86) < Pb (60.85). Maximum metal biosorption capacities of guava bioadsorbent follow similar order (mg/g): Hg (21.48) < Cu (30.36) < Cd (32.54) < Pb (70.25), but with slightly higher adsorption capacities. The removal mechanisms of heavy metals using bioadsorbents have been ascertained by studying their surface properties and functional groups using various spectrometric, spectroscopic, and microscopic methods. Whewellite (C2CaO4·H2O) has been identified in bioadsorbents based on the characterization of their surface properties using X-ray techniques (XPS and XRD), facilitating the ion exchange of metal ions with Ca2+ bonded with carboxylate moieties. For both the bioadsorbents, the Pb2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+ are biosorbed completely by ion exchange with Ca2+ (89-94%) and Mg2+ (7-12%), whereas Hg2+ is biosorbed partially (57-66%) by ion exchange with Ca2+ (38-42%) and Mg2+ (19-24%) due to involvement of other cations in the ion exchange processes. Bioadsorbents contain lignin which act as electron donor and reduced Cr(VI) into Cr(III) (29.87 and 37.25 mg/g) in acidic medium. Anionic Cr(VI) was not adsorbed onto bioadsorbents at higher pH due to their electrostatic repulsion with negatively charged carboxylic functional groups.

Hydrodynamic and Performance Evaluation of a Porous Ceramic Membrane Module Used on the Water-Oil Separation Process: An Investigation by CFD

Wastewater from the oil industry can be considered a dangerous contaminant for the environment and needs to be treated before disposal or re-use. Currently, membrane separation is one of the most used technologies for the treatment of produced water. Therefore, the present work aims to study the process of separating oily water in a module equipped with a ceramic membrane, based on the Eulerian–Eulerian approach and the Shear-Stress Transport (SST k-ω) turbulence model, using the Ansys Fluent^® 15.0. The hydrodynamic behavior of the water/oil mixture in the filtration module was evaluated under different conditions of the mass flow rate of the fluid mixture and oil concentration at the entrance, the diameter of the oil particles, and membrane permeability and porosity. It was found that an increase in the feed mass flow rate from 0.5 to 1.5 kg/s significantly influenced transmembrane pressure, that varied from 33.00 to 221.32 kPa. Besides, it was observed that the particle diameter and porosity of the membranes did not influence the performance of the filtration module; it was also verified that increasing the permeability of the membranes, from 3 × 10⁻¹⁵ to 3 × 10⁻¹³ m², caused transmembrane pressure reduction of 22.77%. The greater the average oil concentration at the permeate (from 0.021 to 0.037 kg/m³) and concentrate (from 1.00 to 1.154 kg/m³) outlets, the higher the average flow rate of oil at the permeate outlets. These results showed that the filter separator has good potential for water/oil separation.

Influence of Wooden Sawdust Treatments on Cu(II) and Zn(II) Removal from Water

Organic waste materials and semi-products containing cellulose are used as low-cost adsorbents that are able to compete with conventional sorbents. In addition, their capacity to bind heavy metal ions can be intensified by chemical treatments using mineral and organic acids, bases, oxidizing agents, and organic compounds. In this paper, we studied the biosorption capacity of natural and modified wooden sawdust of poplar, cherry, spruce, and hornbeam in order to remove heavy metals from acidic model solutions. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra showed changes of the functional groups due to the alkaline modification of sawdust, which manifested in the considerably increased intensity of the hydroxyl peaks. The adsorption isotherm models clearly indicated that the adsorptive behavior of metal ions in treated sawdust satisfied not only the Langmuir model, but also the Freundlich model. The adsorption data obtained for studied sorbents were better fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model for both metals, except for spruce sawdust. Surface complexation and ion exchange are the major mechanisms involved in metal ion removal. We investigated the efficiency of the alkaline modified sawdust for metal removal under various initial concentrations of Cu(II) and Zn(II) from model solutions. The highest adsorption efficiency values (copper 94.3% at pH 6.8 and zinc 98.2% at pH 7.3) were obtained for poplar modified by KOH. For all types of sawdust, we found that the sorption efficiency of modified sorbents was higher in comparison to untreated sawdust. The value of the pH initially increased more in the case of modified sawdust (8.2 for zinc removal with spruce NaOH) and then slowly decreased (7.0 for Zn(II) with spruce NaOH).

Bio-removal of Pb, Cu, and Ni from solutions as nano-carbonates using a plant-derived urease enzyme-urea mixture

This study focuses on utilizing a plant-derived urease enzyme (PDUE)-urea mixture to remove heavy metals from water as constituents of nano-carbonate minerals. The bio-removal process was conducted by individually mixing PbCl₂, CuCl₂, and NiCl₂ solutions with a PDUE-urea mixture, followed by incubation for 24 h at 23 ± 2 °C. The preliminary results revealed that the proposed method exhibited high Pb removal efficiency (˃ 99%) in a short time (8 h); meanwhile, moderate Cu and Ni removal efficiencies (67.91% and 58.49%, respectively) were obtained at the same incubation time. The concentration of heavy metals (50-200 mM) had an insignificant effect on the bio-removal rate, indicating that the PDUE-urea mixture is highly effective for the removal of heavy metals at different concentrations. The bio-removal process involved the transformation of soluble heavy metals into insoluble carbonate materials. A spherically shaped nano-cerussite (4-15 nm), a malachite hexahydrate nanosheet (thickness 8 nm), and an ultrafine micro-hellyerite (thickness 0.3 μm) were the main minerals produced by the Pb, Cu, and Ni bio-removal processes, respectively. As a beneficial application, nano-cerussite was used as an additive in an alkali-activated slag/ceramic waste-based geopolymeric coating. A preliminary study proved that increasing the nano-cerussite content enhanced the resistance of the geopolymeric coating to sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, which is detrimental to normal concrete, particularly in sewer systems.

Evaluation of Groundwater and Grey Water Contamination with Heavy Metals and Their Adsorptive Remediation Using Renewable Carbon from a Mixed-Waste Source

The contamination of water sources with heavy metals is a serious challenge that humanity is facing worldwide. The aim of this work was to evaluate and remediate the metal pollution in groundwater and greywater resources from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In addition, we investigated the application of ultrasonic power before adsorption to assess the dispersion of renewable carbon from mixed-waste sources (RC-MWS) as an adsorbent and enhance the water purification process. The renewable carbon adsorbent showed high ability to adsorb Pb(II), Zn(II), Cu(II), and Fe(II) from samples of the actual water under study. The conditions for the remediation of water polluted with heavy metals by adsorptive-separation were investigated, including the pH of the adsorption solution, the concentration of the heavy metal(s) under study, and the competition at the adsorption sites. The enhanced adsorption process exhibited the best performance at a pH of 6 and room temperature, and with a contact time of 60 min. Kinetic studies showed that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was fitted with the adsorption of Pb(II), Zn(II), Cu(II), and Fe(II) onto the RC-MWS. The adsorption data were well fitted by Langmuir isotherms. The Freundlich isotherm was slightly fitted in the cases of Cu(II), Zn(II), and Fe(II), but not in the cases of Pb(II). The developed adsorption process was successfully applied to actual water samples, including water samples from Deria and Mozahemia and samples from clothes and car washing centers in Riyadh city.

Eco-Friendly β-cyclodextrin and Linecaps Polymers for the Removal of Heavy Metals

Environment-friendly nanosponges, having a high content of carboxyl groups, were synthesized by crosslinking β-cyclodextrin and linecaps, a highly soluble pea starch derivative, with citric acid in water. Additionally, pyromellitic nanosponges were prepared by reacting β-cyclodextrin and linecaps with pyromellitic dianhydride in dimethyl sulfoxide and used in comparison with the citric nanosponges. After ion-exchange of the carboxyl groups H⁺ with sodium ions, the ability of the nanosponges to sequester heavy metal cations was investigated. At a metal concentration of 500 ppm, the pyromellitate nanosponges exhibited a higher retention capacity than the citrate nanosponges. At lower metal concentrations (≤50 ppm) both the citrate and the pyromellitate nanosponges showed high retention capacities (up to 94% of the total amount of metal), while, in the presence of interfering sea water salts, the citrate nanosponges were able to selectively adsorb a significantly higher amount of heavy metals than the pyromellitate nanosponges, almost double in the case of Cu²⁺.

Effect of hydrodynamic parameters on nickel removal rate from wastewater by ion flotation

This study investigated the effect of hydrodynamic parameters on the nickel ion removal in an oscillating grid flotation cell (OGC) with near ideal hydrodynamic environments. Nickel ion was removed in the OGC at various energy inputs (0-2 W/kg), using two bubble sizes (130 and 820 μm) at three surfactant concentrations (SDS/Ni(II) ratio of 1-3) and three air flow rates (1-3 L/min). The results indicated that the energy input has a considerable effect on the ion flotation kinetics and recovery and it is strongly dependent on the cell types (contact environment) and bubble size. Increasing energy input led to an increase in the nickel removal rate due to an increase in the collision rate for bigger bubbles and an optimum flotation rate for smaller bubbles. Nickel removal rate increased around 80% (1.8 times) with an increase in energy input from 0 to 2 W/kg for both bubble sizes. Increasing air flow rate generally led to an increase in the nickel removal rate. A comparison of the effect of energy input on the nickel removal separation efficiency in two different hydrodynamic environments showed that the isotropic and homogeneous contact environment in the OGC is more appropriate than anisotropic and inhomogeneous turbulence in the mechanical cell for ion removal using ion flotation.

Treatment of Saline Water Using Electrocoagulation with Combined Electrical Connection of Electrodes

Saline water treatment has become increasingly important for drinking water supplies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of the electrocoagulation (EC) process with combined aluminum electrodes in removing various types of salt from water samples collected at Sawa Lake, Al-Muthanna, Iraq. The targeted types of salt include total dissolved solids (TDS), chloride salt (Cl−), bromine (Br−), and sulphate (SO42−). A bench scale consisting of combined EC configurations with static electrodes was employed under combined electrical connections. The effect of the six variables factors, such as applied current density (I), reaction time (RT), pH, temperature (T), stirring speed (Mrpm) and inter electrode distance (IED) were observed to achieve a higher removal of TDS, Cl−, Br− and SO42−. Initial results showed the following optimum operating conditions: I = 2 mA/cm2, RT = 80 min, pH = 8, T = 25 °C, IED = 1 cm and Mrpm = 500. The maximum removal efficiency of TDS, Cl−, Br− and SO42− were 91%, 93%, 92% and 90%, respectively. It can be concluded that the EC method applied in the present study was effective to removing salts from lake water.

The Flotation Process Can Go Green

In today’s world of environmental strain, wastewater treatment has become a, more or less, conventional application of flotation—as for instance, in the oil, food, or chemical industries, and in potable water treatment. In this paper, different flotation methods (such as ion, adsorbing colloid, and adsorptive flotation, including biosorption) and techniques will be reviewed; and, in order to explain them further, several applications of these from the laboratory (General and Inorganic Chemical Technology) at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (AUTh) will be presented and analyzed, with the main focus on sustainability. The application of flotation as a separation process, when applied in pollution control or during water treatment, was often criticized due to the possible toxicity of the applied collectors; however, the use of biosurfactants may alleviate this concern and enhance its further acceptability.
