Transactional links between children daily emotions and internalizing symptoms: a six-wave ecological momentary assessment study

BACKGROUND

This study explored the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between everyday emotion dimensions and internalizing symptoms during the transition to early adolescence. We tested associations between children's intensity and instability of daily negative emotions (NE), positive emotions (PE), and daily NE differentiation (NED) with children's self-reported and their mothers' report of children's internalizing symptoms, across six waves, each wave separated by six months.

METHODS

The sample included 199 ethnically diverse mother [M_age at baseline = 40.1 years (SD = 6.1] and child [M_age at baseline = 10.1 (SD = 0.90), 51% girls] dyads, who participated in six 7-day waves of ecological momentary assessment (EMA). During each wave, children reported on PE (i.e. happy and joyful) and NE (i.e. mad, sad, and stressed) up to eight random times per day through smartphone-based EMA. Children and mothers reported on children's internalizing symptoms at each wave. We used random-intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPMs) to test within- and between-person effects.

RESULTS

At the within-person level, increased NE and decreased PE intensity, more unstable NE and PE, and decreased NED at any given wave were positively associated with children's self-reported internalizing symptoms but not with mother-reported child symptoms. However, emotion dimensions did not predict child-reported nor mother-reported child symptoms at the next wave. At the between-person level, higher average NE, more unstable PE and NE, and lower NED were positively associated with average child-reported and mother-reported child internalizing symptoms.

CONCLUSIONS

This study suggests that emotional intensity, instability, and differentiation could be conceptualized as manifestations of internalizing symptoms but not as risk factors for its progression, or residual manifestations of it, among typical children.

Association of Multigenerational Family History of Depression With Lifetime Depressive and Other Psychiatric Disorders in Children: Results from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study

IMPORTANCE

Three-generation family studies of depression have established added risk of psychopathology for offspring with 2 previous generations affected with depression compared with 1 or none. Because of their rigorous methodology, there are few of these studies, and existing studies are limited by sample sizes. Consequently, the 3-generation family risk paradigm established in family studies can be a critical neuropsychiatric tool if similar transmission patterns are reliably demonstrated with the family history method.

OBJECTIVE

To examine the association of multigenerational family history of depression with lifetime depressive disorders and other psychopathology in children.

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS

In this analysis of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study data, retrospective, cross-sectional reports on psychiatric functioning among 11 200 children (generation 3 [G3]) and parent reports on parents' (G2) and grandparents' (G1) depression histories were analyzed. The ABCD study sampling weights were used for generalized estimating equation models and descriptive analyses. Data were collected from September 2016 to November 2018, and data were analyzed from July to November 2020.

MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES

Four risk categories were created, reflecting how many prior generations had history of depression: (1) neither G1 nor G2 (G1-/G2-), (2) only G1 (G1+/G2-), (3) only G2 (G1-/G2+), and (4) both G1 and G2 (G1+/G2+). Child lifetime prevalence and relative risks of psychiatric disorders were based on child and caregiver reports and grouped according to familial risk category derived from G1 and G2 depression history.

RESULTS

Among 11 200 included children, 5355 (47.8%) were female, and the mean (SD) age was 9.9 (0.6) years. By parent reports, the weighted prevalence of depressive disorder among children was 3.8% (95% CI, 3.2-4.3) for G1-/G2- children, 5.5% (95% CI, 4.3-7.1) for G1+/G2- children, 10.4% (95% CI, 8.6-12.6) for G1-/G2+ children, and 13.3% (95% CI, 11.6-15.2) for G1+/G2+ children (Cochran-Armitage trend = 243.77; P < .001). The weighted suicidal behavior prevalence among children was 5.0% (95% CI, 4.5-5.6) for G1-/G2- children, 7.2% (95% CI, 5.8-8.9) for G1+/G2- children, 12.1% (95% CI, 10.1-14.4) for G1-/G2+ children, and 15.0% (95% CI, 13.2-17.0) for G1+/G2+ children (Cochran-Armitage trend = 188.66; P < .001). By child reports, the weighted prevalence of depressive disorder was 4.8% (95% CI, 4.3-5.5) for G1-/G2- children, 4.3% (95% CI, 3.2-5.7) for G1+/G2- children, 6.3% (95% CI, 4.9-8.1) for G1-/G2+ children, and 7.0% (95% CI, 5.8-8.5) for G1+/G2+ children (Cochran-Armitage trend = 9.01; P = .002), and the weighted prevalence of suicidal behaviors was 7.4% (95% CI, 6.7-8.2) for G1-/G2- children, 7.0% (95% CI, 5.6-8.6) for G1+/G2- children, 9.8% (95% CI, 8.1-12.0) for G1-/G2+ children, and 13.8% (95% CI, 12.1-15.8) for G1+/G2+ children (Cochran-Armitage trend = 46.69; P < .001). Similar patterns were observed for other disorders for both parent and child reports and across sex, socioeconomic status, and race/ethnicity.

CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE

In this study, having multiple prior affected generations was associated with increased risk of childhood psychopathology. Furthermore, these findings were detectable even at prepubertal ages and existed in diverse racial/ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Clinically, they underscore the need for screening for family history in pediatric settings and highlight implications for biological research with homogenous subgroups using magnetic resonance imaging or genetic analyses.

Associations of Mothers' and Children's Stress With Children's Device-Measured Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior Trajectories Across 3 Years

BACKGROUND

Psychological stress has adverse effects on health-related behaviors, yet longitudinal research is lacking. Research examined how children's and mothers' perceived stress are associated with children's physical activity and sedentary behavior trajectories across 3 years.

METHODS

Mothers and their children (N = 186 dyads; 8-12 y at baseline, 57% Hispanic) completed 6 assessments across 3 years. Children and mothers self-reported perceived stress using the Stress in Children Scale and Perceived Stress Scale, respectively. Children's moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behavior were assessed using accelerometers. Mixed models examined interactions of mothers' and children's perceived stress by time elapsed in the study on children's MVPA and sedentary behavior.

RESULTS

The perceived stress × time elapsed interactions were significant for children's MVPA and sedentary behavior (Ps < .05). Higher average perceived stress in mothers was associated with greater decreases in children's MVPA and increases in children's sedentary behavior. The child stress × time elapsed interactions was significant for children's MVPA (P < .05) but not sedentary behavior. Higher average perceived stress in children was associated with smaller decreases in children's MVPA.

CONCLUSION

Interventions to promote physical activity and reduce screen time in children should mitigate the effects of psychological stress, especially among mothers, on these behaviors.

A longitudinal study monitoring the quality of life in a national cohort of older adults in Chile before and during the COVID-19 outbreak

BACKGROUND

Confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic has placed great stress on older adults, which may be affecting their quality of life. Thus, this study aims to describe the changes in mental and physical health, isolation and loneliness, residence and socioeconomic resources in a national cohort of Chilean older adults before and during the COVID-19 outbreak. It also analyzes the changes in depressive symptoms by changes in the other quality of life indicators before and during the COVID-19 outbreak. Possible methodological biases of telephone surveys in older adults living in non-developed countries are also discussed.

METHODS

Between June and September 2020, a random subsample of 720 people who had participated in the face-to-face V National Survey on Quality of Life in Older Adults in Chile conducted at the end of 2019 was followed up by telephone. Descriptive bivariate analyses were performed using t-test and non-parametric tests for independent variables, comparing the baseline sample with the current 2020 follow-up sample during the peak of the pandemic outbreak in Latin America. Furthermore, descriptive bivariate analysis through t-test and non-parametric test for paired samples compared the follow-up subsample at baseline with the not-included sample, examining possible biases of the telephone interview compared with the face-to-face interview.

RESULTS

In the panel, there was no variation in self-rated health. The health symptoms that worsened were memory, stomach, and mood problems. Depressive symptoms and anxiety increased; similarly, smartphone users, social contacts, intergenerational co-residence and resilience increased. The telephone follow-up sample had a higher educational level and greater smartphone use than those not included in the subsample.

CONCLUSIONS

Although some physical and mental health indicators have worsened during the pandemic, older adults mobilized resources that could allow them to maintain their quality of life, such as improved resilience. Thus, these findings can guide future research and the development of efficient strategies to improve these resources among older adults to ensure wellbeing.
